Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello, welcome back to the show. I'm your host Kyle
and well I'm going to talk about yet another Melbourne
Comedy Festival show. This one is Casey Phillips in Virtuoso. Now.
The cattle call portion of the audition process can be
a tough time for any performer. The revolving door and

(00:21):
lineup of other actors and actresses or vying for the
same role is a difficult, daunting site, and there's also
the thought of what could have been when you see
rejected audition tapes such as Cillian Murphy as Batman, or
Henry cavill as James Bond or James Kahn as Michael Corleone.

(00:45):
Then you have examples like the Hello mister Kubrick guy
who figured the best way to stand out from the
pack was to scream the poignant Stay Gold monologue from
the Outsiders at the top of his lungs in his
audition videotape. Now, if that performance was too subtle, we

(01:07):
have just the performer up for you. Next. It is
audition number eighty six and it is Tobias Finley Fraser
who is performed by Casey Phillips. Now he intends to
knock your socks off now. Tobias Finley Fraser, the Man,
the Myth, the Idiot, is a classically trained, brilliantly gifted,

(01:27):
and ruggularly handsome legend. In his own mind. He's a
born star, as all his one star uber Eats reviews
can attest to, and he's a performer to be on
the lookout for. As his local council's Community Watch public
notice gave warning off, it's difficult to be this much
of an overactor and an underperformer at the same time.

(01:48):
But Tobias pulls it off now. As judges, we didn't
get his head shots, or his resume or his credits,
even really want him there, but he'll leave an impression
on us nonetheless, so Casey Phillips. He's an award winning
and herald comedian specializing in stand up and character work.
Since twenty twenty, he has been performing at packed rooms

(02:11):
in Australia and abroad, with his shows selling out during
twenty twenty four's Edinburgh French Festival. It's his debut show
or debut solo show, Virtuoso, and it's a brilliant hour
of character and improv poking fun at the pomposity of

(02:33):
theater culture, but more so a person's just sheer intent
to succeed despite his own shortcomings. Casey's character, Tobias is
an affable goofy and dressed in his signature turtleneck, he's
above all a thespian now playing up theatrically and with

(02:57):
desperation in his eyes. Tobias gives us everything that he
has got to give to prove that he has what
it takes for this unspecified role. He displays his quote
unquote talents in singing, dramatic pauses, and so much more.
He presents the audience with his signed photos, which grow

(03:22):
comedically and ridiculously larger and larger to match the man's ego.
Then he takes us on a masterclass of his abilities
and prepared material. The only problem is Tobias is a
forgetful and lonesome man, so it'll be up to the
audience to help him along Dean Dong, who's there stardom.

(03:42):
It takes balls to build a show as much around
crowd work and audience participation as virtuous. So and if
is Likera, tights or anything to go by, Casey's got balls.
The audience is interacted with frequently as part of the show,

(04:03):
making it a fine comedy hour to experience for the
more extroverted audience member. As Tobias the character forgets his lines,
he'll ask for somebody to call it out, whatever that
might lead to, and he'll also seek direction and tips
on how he should play a part, and this, along
with any other unpredictable quirks of the night, become a

(04:26):
running joke for the rest of the show. But people
will also be invited up on stage to be as
much of a part of the show as Casey himself.
While it's embarrassing for sure, the brave audience members get
immediately round of applause and appreciation from the rest of us,
and these moments, as well as Casey's ability to roll
with whatever suggestions came his way, it really made for

(04:48):
some of the night's biggest laughs. And yeah, the audience
members who got up, they were greatly appreciated by Casey
as well, and they made sure throughout the night make
sure that we gave the person applause to as thanks
for helping him out. So truly, this is a it's a
great show with It's one of those shows that has

(05:10):
enough variation in its nightly formula that you could probably
see it time and time again with completely new laughs
each outing Tobias Finland Fraser. He has all the lovable
buffoonery of of a Rowan Atkinson character like mister Bean
or Johny English or one of those, and so I'd
love to see Casey Phillips roll him into another show

(05:32):
in the future, maybe even something completely different. I know
on Casey Phillips's YouTube channel he maybe this was an
early version of the show. He has like kind of
a preview image of him doing a preview video of
from doing the character, kind of like the character hosting

(05:52):
a masterclass in acting. As I say, maybe this was
another prototype of the Stamp the stage show, or maybe
it's one that he's working on for the future. I
think it would be an interesting thing to see in
the future. So but until then, it's no wonder that
Virtuoso has been such a success. And yeah, I can't

(06:14):
recommend it highly enough. So again, Virtuoso is playing at
the Melbourne Comedy Festival and yeah, you definitely highly recommended
you guys, go and check it out.
