Speaker 1 (00:02):
Okay, Well, now on the show, I want to take
a look at a brand new show that is on
in Melbourne. But I also want to take a look
at the venue as well, because I've got to say
it is this venue that makes this show so special. Basically,
if you're into cabaret, burlesque or circus, then you have
(00:23):
to know about this new venue called Viva, which is
in North Melbourne. This is one of the most beautiful
venues you were going to find in Melbourne at all.
And it's a bit of a surprise because from the
outside it looks like an old factory, and I guess
it is a converted factory, but this is a venue
(00:46):
now that's being used by a private dance school. But
upstairs there is a very very beautiful venue called Viva. Now, basically,
you walk into this venue and you feel like you're
walking into the kind of I don't know, I don't
(01:09):
know how to put it. The main bar section itself
outside looks like something that you would expect in a
five star hotel like Crown Towers or somewhere like that.
It's got these beautiful couches, this beautiful look. Even the
toilets here are amazing. I know that sounds weird, but
every toilet is its own cubicle with its own toilet,
(01:32):
of course, but also with its own wash basin, dryer
and everything. This is the absolute elite. Then you walk
into the performance space and you feel like you're walking
into a five star cabaret lounge. I said to the
people I went with, this feels like I should be
dressed like al Capone, Like it's got that kind of
(01:55):
vibe to it where it's just this. It's the kind
of place that the rich and famous go play, but
the prices aren't like that. This is somewhere that you
can go with a group of friends out for a
night and yeah, you'll spend a little bit of money,
but you're not going to be blowing your budget or
anything like that. Now, the show itself that is on
(02:16):
at the moment is called Vogue, and I got to say,
this is one of the best burlesque cabaret shows I
have seen for a long long time. It is just
absolutely amazing. The show itself is hosted by James Elmer
and Jonathan Nash Daily, and they kind of play these
(02:39):
characters that bartenders that have been called up suddenly to
host the night, and they pretend that they're out of
their depth, but look, these guys are very very talented.
They're funny. They get involved with a lot of the
acts as well, so they have skills. They're not just
there for comedy, but they have skills. On the night
(03:00):
that I went, these guys acted so professional. There was
a guy in the audience who was an absolute nightmare
for some reason. I don't know whether he was it
had a little bit too much to drink, or whether
it was just his personality, but he kept on thinking
that he could get up on the stage and be
part of the show, which kind of worked, I guess
(03:23):
when James and Jonathan were there, although you shouldn't do it,
but it started to get to the point where it
was absolutely ridiculous. He was jumping up on the stage
like when performers were there. At one point he was
part of the audience participation and they had to warn
him a number of times not to touch the girls
(03:45):
that are part of the cast. But these guys handled
it so well. Instead of making a big scene about it,
they would just kind of off the cuff say to him, mate,
just sit down, like just sit down, You're not part
of the show, just sit down. They didn't go and
stop the show or call security or anything like that.
They just handled it themselves and they did it in
(04:06):
a in a really really good way. And I've got
to say, aside from all of the comedic skills and everything,
that showed that these guys really know how to put
on a show like this, now the actual show itself vogue.
There are so many talented performers here. There there's Anna
who both sings and dancers. There's Taran who also sings
(04:29):
and dances. Sarah Molly Clark who is the eralist dance captain,
so she does a lot of that side. There's Abby
who's also a dancer and an aeralist as well. In fact,
there's actually two Abby's but it's spelled differently, who are
(04:50):
both dancers and aeralists. There's Maddie Joy who's also an aerialist,
and there's Siria Zapata who is also an erroralist. As
Ethan James is the other male part of the cast
as well, and he does an absolutely amazing job, as
does Hannah as well, who is the swing expert. Now
(05:15):
there's a lot in this show, but this is a
show that everybody is going to sit back and completely enjoy.
The first third of the show is introducing all of
the performers, and they get introduced like they are cocktails
in a very very brilliant way by the two hosts.
I won't go too much into that to spoil how
(05:35):
they do that, but they introduce them all as cocktails.
Second part of the show is then a trip through
the decades, starting with the nineteen twenties and going right
through to the two thousands. So you start off with
things like Charlie Chaplin wartime songs, but basically what they
(05:57):
look at is what was the the popular music or
the popular style of that time period, and it's brilliantly done.
Like even the tribute to the girls that perform for
the troops during World War Two is really really good.
You'll see a lot of kind of celebrities in that section,
(06:19):
as in people playing with celebrities, but like things like
the Charlie Chaplin dance and things like that are just
really creative and really brilliant. This shows that this show
does think a lot about what they're doing. They're not
just getting up on stage and dancing. They're doing a
lot of little things now The third part of this
show is a trip around the world. Basically your two
(06:44):
hosts joke about the fact that they almost didn't open
Viva in Melbourne, that it was almost open in all
these other places. And again the performances of from each
country sometimes a comedic, but also capture the culture of
that country as well. So for example, there's one where
(07:07):
Egypt does the focus and they kind of go back
into like the pharaoh style for the girls dancing, but
also have an amazing erroralist taking part in that bit
as well. The other thing too that I really liked
about the show was that every country, every decade is
really only like five or six minutes of the show,
(07:29):
so if you don't like one section, then it moves
on really really quickly. The structure of the show is
great too, because this is somewhere where you can order
food and drinks. As I said, the show was split
into thirds. There's a ten minute break between each of
those parts, so it gives you plenty of time to
be able to grab your dinner, grab your snacks, grab
(07:52):
your desserts, grab you drinks whatever. I should look at
that part two, the food and the desserts and the
drink are just absolutely fantastic. There's an amazing array of
cocktails and mocktails. There's beers and spirits and wines available
as well. A great selection with the main food, a
(08:13):
great selection with the desserts as well, and I can
highly recommend the cream Deblay Cream Deblay and also the Turros.
I had the Turros with ice cream and that was
really good as well. So look, this is a well
rounded venue. This is the kind of venue that you
can go out for a night out, get good food,
(08:36):
good drinks, and you're going to get great entertainment as well.
This is something that Melbourne has needed for a long
long time. Since losing Dracula's, our cabaret scene here in
Melbourne has kind of been whatever has kind of washed
in at that time. I'm sure we've seen some great
shows that way, but it's nice knowing that there's a
(08:57):
stable kind of venue that you can go to every
few months and see a different show. There is another
show on there at the moment as well as Vogue.
There's a show called Vicious as well, which I'm dying
now to go back and see. But look, Vogue is amazing.
You'll recognize most of the music as you would expect
being called Vogue. There's like music from Madonna, just about
(09:21):
every pop artist that you can think of over the
last twenty years that's been highly popular. Is there'll be
music there, whether it be Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, even
some of the contemporary rappers and stuff like that. This
is a well rounded show that's going to appeal to
whether you're just turned eighteen or whether you're in your sixties.
(09:45):
You're going to recognize something from everything in this show.
The performances themselves are amazing. This is a real Mulin
rouge style to it, and it works amazingly well. The
performers are all brilliant at what they do, and it's
one of those shows where one moment you're sitting there
and you're in aura of what's happening above you. In
(10:07):
the next moment, you're laughing out loud because of a
joke that's been told. So look, if you get the chance,
go and see Vogue wallets On. I highly recommend this show.
It is an absolutely amazing show. But also keep a
watch on what's coming up at Viva next because I
think I'm gonna be one of those people that goes
along and sees their new shows every time they have
(10:27):
a new show. Because this is one of Melbourne's best venues.
This is the perfect night out for anyone, Like I said,
age between eighteen right through to your seventies and eighties,
you're gonna love this. And this is one of the
most beautiful, exquisite venues that I think I've ever been
to and I can't wait to go back.
