Speaker 2 (00:54):
Suspend Well, and I certainly told her listen here, I said, if.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
You think for one minute that I am saying to
stand for that sort of thing, you just James, you're not.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Listening to me. Put down that paper and listen to me.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Yes listening.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
So I said, you're very much mistaken. I did not
come in here to be insulted. Perhaps you don't know it,
young lady, but the war is over and the sooner
you people appreciate that fact, the better it will be
for all of us. And maybel back me up to
you that she did. We went to the manager and
what we didn't tell him about that clerk, we certainly did.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Are you listening to me, James, Yes, Yes, trying to
tell us that merchandise is hard to get and so
we're salespeople.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
Didn't do them any good.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
I'll tell you I didn't.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
You stay here, I'll betty much. They're taking a little
more time and trouble hiring clerks, and we got through
with them the very eye. It's just like I said
to Mabel. It's just like I said. I said, if
they have a hat department, they have to sell hats,
and if they want to sell hats, they have to
allow the customers to try them on.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Honestly, if I want to try on hat, it's.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
None of them. That's the way it works. I want
to try one every morning at breakfast, every night from
them a minute I got out of my house. Un
the last time I got this week every weekend Saturday morning.
Un those ten meters talk talk about it even in
the movies. Well, anyway, I said, it might have been
(02:05):
so bad. I'd had a traveling job. But well, and
I didn't have a traveling job. I worked for a bank.
I had a job. There is a spot auditor. The
job is to make spot checks on tellers and cashier's
accounts between the regular audits. Bank had been stuck a
couple of times by embezzling tellers, no wonder the money
they paid, so they fixed up this job making spot
(02:27):
checks to catch any funny business before it got very far.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
All right, just as much money as hers?
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Are you listening to me, James, Yes, dear, I said,
I was listening well.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
And if my husband gave me as much money for
clothes as hers, I thought that I could look a
whole lot better than she does.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
Of Course, Ethel had been talking like that for oh
ten years, expectually ever since we got married, I guess,
and there wasn't anything I could do about it. I've
tried to make her shut up, but she wouldn't. I
tried to leave her once, but she followed me and
talked and talked until I came back, just to shut
her up. I couldn't get it. Of course, I tried
(03:01):
that one, James, but I couldn't stand. I had to
do something that had to be that.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
If you'd only cut down at some of your expenses,
we ought to be able to save enough money.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
For a car.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
Now I think that, James, Well, for Heaven's sake, how
you start.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
On me getting up that way? Where are you going?
May I?
Speaker 1 (03:21):
I'm just going down to the drug store for a metaphor.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
We you have to go to the drug store at
this time of night for go to heavens. I work
hard to make a nice home for you, James, and
I'll see why you're always getting up in the middle
of a nice chat.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
To go out. Do you hear me?
Speaker 2 (03:32):
I asked a nice questions.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
As soon as I got outside, I felt better because
I thought that I'd have to go back there again
and again. I listened to it talk every day, every night.
The thought that I'd have to go back there kept
hammering in my head. I suppose I knew what I
had to do a long time before that, but I'd
never admitted it to myself. It was only one way
(04:05):
to shut that woman up. That was to killers. I
didn't sleep very much that night. In the morning, I
got up as usual and I went to the bank.
I hadn't figured out how to do it. Yet what
(04:27):
I wanted was an iron plaid alibi. I wanted to
think some more about it. So for today's spot check,
I needed something easy, some accounts that wouldn't give me
any trouble. I looked over the bank personnel, wondering which
one I should pick, And there was my mam Arthur H. Pillawerre,
(04:47):
the perfect employee, looking guys like John Q. Taxpayer, hard working, conscientious, loyal,
been there for thirty five years, and then risen at
last for the eminence of second assistant cashier. Good morning,
mister Tower. Oh, good morning, mister Carroll. We passed the
RESTful night I trust. Oh yes, more last, mister Tower. Ah,
(05:08):
that's fine. Now what may I do for you this morning?
I thought i'd run a spot check on your accounts today.
If you don't mind spot check on my account, there's
really no need for that, is no, of course not.
It's strictly routine, you know that. But surely there must
be others that you have. Oh come now, mister Tower.
There isn't anything wrong with your accounts, is there? Because
of course not? Of course not. Well, if you insist,
(05:30):
here are the book and you may proceed, and so
I went to work on tour's accounts. I'd done this
sort of thing so often I didn't have to pay
much attention to it. So while I worked, I thought,
I've thought about Ethel and about an Appa bout. Well,
aren't you finished? Get mister Carroll closing time? You know
(05:55):
that's about mister Tower. Quite a bit of work here.
You seem to have handled a lot of transactions last month.
Oh oh yes, yes, I did a busy month this
last month. Uh, you're going home now? No, I think
I'll stay here and finish this up. Why don't you
finish up in the morning. Oh, this shouldn't take much longer.
I'll do it tonight, very well, good night that I'm
was showing. Hum, it's funny, doesn't balance. Must have made
(06:19):
a mistake, so I'll added again. But it wasn't any mistake.
His books didn't balance, and by the time I'd finished
the check, I knew he hadn't made a mistake either.
Mister Arthur H two where the prize employee of Consolidated
(06:42):
National was deliberately short three thousand, seven hundred and fifty
six dollars and twenty three sem When I'd finished. It
was quite late. I locked up before I started for
home and some more talk from my loving wife. I
(07:04):
paused for a moment, leaning on the bank doors and
let a cigarettes. Something was beginning to stir in my mind.
I didn't know quite what, but it was something important.
As I was thinking, I happened to glance down the
street and I saw somebody coming towards me. I thought
the figure looked Amoz. Yes, when he passed under the
(07:25):
street light, I recognized him. It was Tilworth. I waited
for him. How you weren't headed to the bank where
you til were? Well, well, yeah, as a matter of fact,
I was some work I wanted to clean up. Yeah
I can imagine. Never mind about that now till where
you can't clean it up. Come on, I'm down the
(07:46):
corner and have a cup of coffee with me. Well,
thank you for the invitation, but I think you had
better come along. See I want to talk to you.
Well really, miss kel, I don't think that I care
till where. I have a report in my pocket concerning
your accounts. You just might like to see it before
I turn it in. All right, I'll come just for
a moment. Let's go. I got till we're into a booth,
(08:12):
and ordered two cups of coffee and handed them a
carbon coffee. Of the reports. He read it all the
way through, and the further he read, the whiter his
face got. Stop shaking and give me that for your
stead your coffee. Now, there are a couple of things
I want to know before I turn this in. What
(08:34):
have you done with the money, mister Carroll? I have
a sister, she's desperately ill. Every penny of that money
has gone for her treatments. Every penny that is going
to make any difference in bezelments and bezelmon. She would die.
She would die, mister Carroll. I didn't mean to steal
that money, and I'll pay it back. Yeah, don't turn
it that report. My sister will die if I can't
(08:55):
continue her treatment. I'll find some way to pay your die.
That's what they all say to mister Carroll. I've lived
a life of property and honestly for fifty years. I
only did this because I couldn't be able to see
my sister die for lack of money. I had to
have it. You must help me, I must help you.
Do you realize what you're asking me to do? Yes,
I realized it. She assured you. There some way I
(09:16):
can make it worth you a while. I haven't any money,
but I do anything for you, absolutely anything, change me.
This was it the perfect alibi, so would provide it,
would have to provide it. I listened to him. Right now,
I'm soil I'd just thought it all out, and she
(09:38):
thinks I have some money. All right, all right, all right,
I'll help you on certain conditions.
Speaker 4 (09:45):
Thank you so much, mister Carroll.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
You don't realize it. First I want a written confession
from you, just in case. Then I want you to
be prepared to swear that I was with you all
evening on one night that I'll pick out you understand.
Oh yes, yes, I'll do it. And if anything at all.
Speaker 4 (10:07):

come home at almost eight o'clock. Stethol was in fine form.
(12:09):
She started right in, No where have you been?
Speaker 2 (12:11):
You know I'm supposed to meet Maybel with the corner
at eight fifteen to catch the bus downtown to the show,
so I should think you show a little consideration for
me once in a while. We'll answer me.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
Where have you been? I'm sorry, dear, I'm sorry. I
had to work late and I didn't have a chance
to call.
Speaker 2 (12:23):
What do you mean you didn't have a chance to
call me? Now your dinner's all cold.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
You just have to eat it that way too.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
I can't wait around here any longer.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
That's all right, dear. I'll tell you what. You go
and get your things on. I'll call Mabel and tell
her that you're going to be a little late. She
won't have left yet. Uh. You haven't called her yet,
have you?
Speaker 4 (12:37):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (12:37):
Well, no, I haven't called her already. I've been doing
nothing to wait for you, all right.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
Dear, I'll call her now. You gonna get your things on? Well?
Speaker 2 (12:43):
All right, But in the future, James Carroll, when you
know I'm going out, I want to hear on time.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
Hello about you told her you along? Do you expect
anybody tonight? That's fine? Listen? Oh wait, this is the night. Yeah,
I want you to say that I've been there with
you all evening from seven o'clock on. Never mind why,
I'll be over there after a while. I'll give you
the details of what you just say when the time comes. Ye,
(13:14):
I don't care whether you like it or not too No,
not yet, dear, not yet, just a moment. You don't
want your sister to die, do you? Do? You? All right? James? No,
I didn't say phone was busy.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
Oh what do you mean the.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
Phone was busy?
Speaker 3 (13:30):
I heard you talking to somebody.
Speaker 1 (13:31):
Oh well that was somebody else.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
Oh well, honestly, this is most annoying.
Speaker 3 (13:35):
I don't believe you can do anything right.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
Jimmy best pall. Yes, he really can't even dial for
head AND's sake. Oh, I don't know.
Speaker 4 (13:45):
Hello, Hello, Kelly, Telly, this esso?
Speaker 2 (13:49):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (13:50):
Ed maybe lest yes?
Speaker 2 (13:51):
Oh good, yeah, let me talk to you?
Speaker 1 (13:53):
What you please? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Say James, don't just stand there behind me like that.
You know how nervous it missed? Way, Mabel, Mabel, listen,
Hans And I'm sorry, but I'm gonna be just I'm
just gonna be a tiny bit late. Yeah, well, I'll
get you next to sure.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
Well, it's really very annoying.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
I had a a. I mean, can't you hear me? Amy?
(14:35):
I guess I must have got back not very long
after the cops got there. The apartment was ablaze with lights,
with the cop at the door. Inside there was a
photographer's fingerprint man, all the usual array of the law.
The detective in charge is named Dolan, pretty much of
an average looking guy, but sharp. We went through the
(14:55):
communities and he told me how sorry it was. I
expressed my shock on horror, and finally we got down
to business. Mister Carroll, I hate to body at a
time like this, but I find it quite helpful in
cases of this kind of talk to people as soon
as possible. Yes, yes, I understand. Now when did you
last see your wife alive? Mister Carroll? Why are you
(15:17):
about a quarter to seven? I guess I only came
in for a moment and she was getting ready to
go out bout a quarter to seventh, and she was
okay when you left, yes, perfectly. And you say you
left the apartment, then that's right. Where'd you go, mister Carroll? Well, well,
what's that got to do with this film? Mister Carroll,
there's a murder case. Your wife was strangled while he
(15:38):
was talking over the phone to a friend of hers.
You wanted to bring her murder the justice of course
as well in a case like this, unless we get
a break, we'll have to investigate the whereabouts of a
great many people at the time she was killed. You'll
find out a lot of things that people would prefer
to keep quiet. Now, perhaps what you were doing after
you left here is something like that. But let me
(16:00):
if where you were and what you were doing has
nothing to do with this case, it'll never come out. Now,
where were you? I was it to see a woman,
mister Carroll? Oh no, no, there was no other one.
Don't you remember where you went? Yes? Yes, I remember.
Why won't you tell me, mister Carroll? Where did you
(16:23):
go after you left this apartment at a quarter of seven?
I'm not going to tell you, mister Carroll, why did
you kill your wife? Didn't kill her? What's the matter
with you? You didn't kill her. You left her here
alive at a quarter of seven, and you won't say
where you went. But that's right, But I didn't kill her.
(16:44):
For whoy should I look? Kiera? I love my wife,
mister Carroll. I'm afraid you leave me no choice. I
must ask you to accompany me down the headquarters. Down
at headquarters, we went through it all over again and again,
(17:04):
and again in the end, always the same three questions,
and always the same three answers. Why did you kill
your wife, Carol? I didn't kill her. Why did you
go that night? I won't tell you. Why won't you
tell us what you went? I won't tell you that.
The same three questions and the same three answers, over
(17:25):
and over and over for a long long time, over
and over and over. I have never told them. The
case came up for trial about two months later. The
(17:45):
constitution had a good sound case for first degree murder,
and the district Attorney made the most of it. It
looked open and shot until the last witness for the defense.
For the last, the only witness for the defense, Arthur Tillwood,
took the stand.
Speaker 5 (18:00):
On the evening of the fourteenth of September. I went
straight home from the bank and had dinner. At about
two minutes past seven o'clock. I remember the timing exactly
because my favorite radio program, that's the Symphony Hour.
Speaker 1 (18:12):
I just come on.
Speaker 5 (18:13):
The defendant, mister James Carroll, joined me and remained in
my place until a bottom.
Speaker 1 (18:19):
At o'clock, ordering the court. Ordering the order, he went
at him, hammer and tongs kept him on the stand
for an hour and a half. But he never changed
his story and never contradicted himself. He made as admirable
a witness as he did a bank employee. The journey
was out for a long time, twelve hours or so.
(18:40):
And when they came back, I don't know, ladies and
gentlemen of the jury, have you reached a verdict? We
have y honor. Do you find the defendant, James Carroll,
guilty as charge or not guilty? Not guilty? And there
(19:05):
it was just the way i'd plant. I was free,
and I'd stay free. No man, the law says, she'll
be placed placing jeopardy for the same offense. No matter
what they found out, they couldn't touch me. Now I
was free of ethel forever. After it was over, I
(19:35):
took about a week off. I got a cabin up
in the hills and I just loafed around for a
whole week, all by myself. It was nice and quiet,
nice and quiet. When I got back to the apartment,
I thought someone standing on my door. It was Dolan. Hello, Carol,
(19:58):
Hello Dylan. What does he mean? Yeah, just for a minute.
I've been away for a week, you know, yeah, well
you know come on in. Thanks Sadan, Thanks cigarette cigar. No,
I don't think so, thanks anyway. M m hmmm, prody, Dolan,
(20:27):
what do you want? Oh? Nothing? Really, Look Dolan, is
this supposed to be a purely social girl? Tell me?
Do you fish a fish?
Speaker 4 (20:38):
No?
Speaker 1 (20:39):
Why? Fishing is my favorite sport. I was raised around
Winnipeg Lake. You know, fishing's fine. Yeah, there's one particular
spot on winnipac at the favorite of a lot of
fishmen as d cool and rocky. There was a big
speckled bass lived there, very cagy creature. He was too.
A lot of fellows thought they had him. Hope they
made me. But that's always got away. This is all
(21:02):
very interesting, But if you don't. Matter of fact, that
fish got to be quite famous, got to be known
as the one who got away. And every time anybody
did any serious fishing there, they'd always have a triat landing.
Oh yeah, they tried everything, all sorts of flies and lures,
and they going on for years. Look here, Dylan, I
don't know what you want from me. Well, I gotta
go down, Carol. It's a fascinating a story, don't you think.
(21:27):
Very By the way, Carol, you know how much that
fish weighed? Seven pounds and twelve ounces. How do you know?
We got a little careless one day. Took a long time,
but I finally got him fine now, Carol. I could
(21:53):
see that Dolan was going to be annoying, but I
didn't care. I figured off after a while. There was
only one more thing I had to do to clean
this whole thing up. I'd made a bargain with silwere
and I intended to keep it. Yes, sir, I'm a
man that keeps the bargain. That night I went around
(22:13):
to his apartments. There was no answer. When I knocked,
I noticed that the door was unlatched, and so I
pushed it open. There was ChIL. We're sitting in the
dark by the window, just staring out the flicker of
the neon signs outside with his face as they flickered
on and off. He knocked. About one hundred and fifty
(22:33):
years old. Jill worry, Hey, Kilworth, kill Worth, what are
you doing sitting there in the dark. No, let's have
some light city here, thinks you know, thinking about what
bout a lot of sea principally about you? Huh? Love
(22:58):
till where I made a bargain with you when I've
come to keep it. That's sir, here's your confession. Here
are both copies of my report to world. You hear me,
I said, here was the cons I heard you. It
doesn't matter. What do you mean? It doesn't matter. Do
you want to go to jail toward? But how about
your sister's nice sisters dead this morning? Oh? I'm sorry
(23:22):
to you made me cheer your wife Carol? What? Oh?
Come now? So don't be stupid. I did you a favor.
You did me one that bad. If it hadn't been
for me, your wife would still be alive. And I've
been punished for my sins, I says, who will punish
you for your sin? And you cheated justice?
Speaker 4 (23:44):
But you won't cheat me.
Speaker 2 (23:45):
I'm gonna hear you.
Speaker 1 (23:47):
Sit down, get away from that night. Get away from
that night. I tell you, all right, give it to me,
give it me, not sit that's better. Quit, nasty little pigsticker.
You have to here at till Worth. There's your nice
(24:09):
my decrepitive engine angel. And I'm going to kill anybody.
I'll get you Carol. You'll see I'll get you your murdered. Yeah, yeah,
who was there a man?
Speaker 2 (24:32):
Wait?
Speaker 1 (24:32):
A minute. Hold on, I'm coming, hello, Carol. What do
you mean by getting me out of bed very last night? Carol?
Who wants to know? Police department wants to know? Now?
Answer my question? Where were you last night? Or aren't
(24:54):
you saying? Certainly? I'm saying I went over to see Tilworth.
Anything wrong with that? And how he was all right?
About the same as usual? How was he when you
left him? He said the same as when I came in,
of course he was What's wrong? Something wrong with siwork?
He's dead, Carol. There was a knife in his heart,
(25:19):
a knight. There were fingerprints on that knife, Carol. It
was also hot, and your finger prints were on at Carol,
and on the door and on the lamb. Listen, I
didn't kill him, I tell you this, frame, baby, I
didn't watch him. I was going to taking a different view. Carol,
gets some clothes on. You're under arrest for the murder
of Arthur Tilwell. No, no, so bad. You'll never get
(25:40):
to see that fish I was telling you about. It's
over my fireplace. Just hang the Come on, Carol. Spend
