Speaker 4 (01:53):
To Judge Gordon Hall, Junior Judge of the Superior Court
off for sixty two County Building, Greenville, South Carolina, your honor,
as attorney for the plaintiff in the case now before you,
I fully realized my absence from court this morning ipso

(02:15):
facto places me in contempt. However, due to the fact
that almost had my throat cut, I hope the court
will accept this explanation, but we'll keep it in the
strictest confidence. When your honor adjourned court last Wednesday, I

(02:36):
left my train for New York, planning to spend the
weekend with friends, return on the three fifty Sunday afternoon.
My stay was pleasantly uneventful until approximately train time, when,
due to extremely heavy traffic, I arrived at the station
later thunexpected. I missed by about five seconds. The next

(02:59):
train was none totil eleven fifty. I looked at the
station clock to see how much time I had to kill,
and I took out my wallet to see what I
could afford in the way of killing time. Almost immediately
I was aware of a rather attractive young lady. Come
on directly, Taughton, I told you, but it wouldn't suit

(03:20):
the works. If the court is familiar with Lewis Carroll's
Alice in Wonderland, you honor may recall, as I did,
that this is a line from the Madhatter's Tea Party.
Feeling certain that the lady was inebriated, I gave her
the march Hare's classic reply, It was the best butter
all right, non listen seven o'clock sharp, be at six

(03:41):
two four West fifteen. You'll get your money in instructions there.
Make sure you're not followed, understand. Oh yes, ma'am helps,
and you were.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
Five minutes early.

Speaker 4 (03:51):
You know that's dangerous. Oh now, look, honey, this.

Speaker 5 (03:54):
Next time you better be on time.

Speaker 4 (04:00):
Obviously I had received information of importance to someone. Thinking
it over, I got a strong feeling it was something unlawful.
The next thing was to make sure I wrote down
the address on the back of an envelope and moved
a few yards away from where I'd been standing, just
under the station clock. At exactly four o'clock, a man
in the dark suit took up my exact same position.

(04:23):
He glanced at the clerk, took out his wallet, started
to count his money. I walked toward him casually. I
told you, butter wouldn't suit the works. It was the best,
butter get out of town fast. They're wise to us,
wise to us, but no bus the boss his get
out of town. Apparently my choice of words was effective,

(04:47):
because the man immediately followed my instructions with amazing speed
and professional finesse By had any doubts, the crime was
in the make, and they were now completely erased. Consequently,
I reported my evidence to the police.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
It's certainly an interesting story, mister Stone, but.

Speaker 4 (05:10):
You don't believe me, Lieutenant.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
I didn't say that.

Speaker 4 (05:13):
But that's what you mean, isn't it?

Speaker 2 (05:15):
What I mean is there's no law against quoting Alice
in Wonderland, in Pennsylvania Station, or anywhere else for that matter.

Speaker 4 (05:21):
You're a lawyer. You want to know that, all right, sure,
But they were using it as a code. Isn't that plain?
You'd like to know why It's not just a question
of curiosity, Lieutenant.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
On mister Stone, New York is a city of over
eight and one half million, a certain percentage of scooballs.

Speaker 4 (05:36):
Oh, this wasn't a schooball. These people were deadly serious.
They're up to something, Lieutenant, I assure you, I've got
to have something to go on, mister Stone. Even if
we could find these people, what do I charge them with?
I've got to have something concrete? Well, no, the address
on fifteenth Street. Can't you investigate it?

Speaker 6 (05:53):
Okay?

Speaker 4 (05:54):
All right, you.

Speaker 6 (05:58):
Yell, Lieutenant want me?

Speaker 2 (06:00):
Yeah, Heley, this is mister Storm. I want you to
drive him to an address on fifteenth Street. He'll explain
all about it on the way.

Speaker 4 (06:13):
Of course, I couldn't blame the lieutenant for being skeptical.
It sounded crazy telling it that way, but it was
the truth, and I couldn't help resenting his attitude, as
if I'd dreamed up the whole thing merely to keep
myself riding a squad car. As we drove downtown, recounted
the events to Officer Heating, who fortunately showed serious interest.

(06:36):
He explained that this part of New York was not
known as a crime Center, which further increased my belief
that I had stumbled on to no ordinary criminal undertaking
the traffic. Then, as we approached the neighborhood of fifteenth Street,
everything looked ordinary enough. The typical Sunday afternoon street scene,
children of plays, strolling couples in their Sunday best baby carriages,

(07:01):
drug store open on the corner, A blind man selling pencils.
What was that number again, mister Stone, the six two
four west?

Speaker 7 (07:12):
That'll be the north side. I'll let's see six eighteen
six twenty six, twenty two. That's funny. What what's funny?
Where they're tearing down the building? That's six twenty four?
Got to be it can be? You sure, six twenty
four is the number.

Speaker 4 (07:31):
I'm positive I wrote it down right away.

Speaker 7 (07:34):
Well maybe I'm wrong, but let's go over and check. Hey, hey, you,
what do you want an keep your eyes open, mister Stone.
Let me know if you see anybody you recognize.

Speaker 4 (07:50):
All right, what's the matter?

Speaker 7 (07:51):
Office here? Something wrong? Want some information? Who's the boss
of this job?

Speaker 3 (07:56):
Me?

Speaker 6 (07:57):
Me, I'm the boss. What's the trouble. What's the number here?

Speaker 4 (08:01):
What we want to know the number of this building?

Speaker 7 (08:03):
But oh oh, this was six twenty four? You sure, sure,
I'm sure six twenty four. I'm tearing down the right building.
Don't think i'd make a mistake like that, do you?
How long you've been working here? Two weeks? It's gonna
tear down the ones on both sides too. I know
what I'm doing. You want to see the papers? Way believe?

(08:24):
How come you're working on Sunday rush job? Anything wrong
with that? I guess not?

Speaker 4 (08:29):
Why you tearing them the buildings down to clear the lot?

Speaker 6 (08:32):
You're kidding? What are you guys looking?

Speaker 3 (08:35):
For?

Speaker 4 (08:36):
Sure, I'd forget it.

Speaker 7 (08:37):
You're welcome to watch, but I gotta get back to what. Okay,
that's our thanks see anything, mister Stone, No, no, nothing
at all.

Speaker 6 (08:48):
They'd all look legit to me too.

Speaker 4 (08:53):
I guess the lieutenant was right. I got all hopped
up over nothing.

Speaker 6 (08:57):
Well, that's the way it goes.

Speaker 4 (08:58):
Sometimes, can't get over it. I was so sure.

Speaker 6 (09:01):
Oh you did right anyway, take it from me.

Speaker 4 (09:04):
You're kind of foolish now.

Speaker 6 (09:06):
But don't feel that way. Yeah, because.

Speaker 4 (09:10):
I well, let's just forget the whole thing. I'm sorry
I troubled you.

Speaker 7 (09:13):
Oh, no trouble at all. That's what we're here for
Why would you like me to drop you off?

Speaker 4 (09:20):
My train doesn't leave till eleven fifty.

Speaker 6 (09:23):
Well, you got plenty of time. Aren't you taking a
movie or something?

Speaker 4 (09:26):
Yeah, I might as well, I guess. Just drop me
off around Times Square, please, I think next.

Speaker 6 (09:32):
Time you're up from Greenville, up and see us again.

Speaker 4 (09:39):
Officer Healy dropped me at one of the Broadway theaters.
I bought a ticket and went in. There had to
be something to it, somewhere along the line. I'd made
a mistake. I took out the envelope on which I
had written the address. By the light of the screen,
I reread it again. Oh, the mistake wasn't there. My

(10:00):
mind went back over the Manhatter's tea party. No, there
was nothing there. Then it suddenly hit me. The girl
had said to be at six twenty four West fifteenth
Street seven o'clock. Nothing about being inside. That was it.
It had to be. I glanced at my watch. It
was just six forty one when I left the theater. Taxi, Hey,

(10:24):
Taxi six twenty four West fifteenth and step on it.
It was exactly three minutes to seven when I reached
the corner of West fifteenth. The street was deserted. Now

(10:47):
I walked slowly toward all that was left of six
twenty four. I could see no one, but I was
shut and I was being watched. I reached the front
of the building and stopped. It was exactly seven o'clock.
The sound came from the opposite end of the street. Fortunately,

(11:10):
whoever it was would have to pass under the only
street light. When he reached the cone of light, I
saw a man, well dressed, wearing dark glasses, feeling his
way toward me with a cane. It didn't look real.

(11:30):
Seven maids, seven mops good follow me, and I remembered
the rest of it from Alice in Wonderland. If seven
maids with seven mops swept for half a year, you
suppose the warrors said that they could get it clear.
I doubt it, said the carpenter, and shed a bitter tear.

Speaker 2 (12:07):
Auto Light, it's bringing you, mister Cornell Wilde in Allen
in Wonderland, tonight's presentation in Radio's Outstanding Theater of Thrills Suspense.

Speaker 1 (12:27):
Well, Harlow, we won and happy. You always win with
an auto light electrical system. That's why it's used as
original equipment on so many leading makes of our finest cars,
trucks and tractors.

Speaker 6 (12:38):
Yes, sure, the boys really went all out.

Speaker 1 (12:40):
Today, and so does your auto light electrical system happen.
It goes to work the instant you start the ignition
and keeps on working every second your engine runs, as
well as when you sound your horn, play your radio,
turn on your lights, use your electric windshield, wiper or lighter.
The electrical system is mighty important to every car owner. Hey, so, friends,

(13:01):
treat your car's electrical system to a periodic checkup at
your car dealer's or at your nearest authorized.

Speaker 4 (13:07):
Auto light service station.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
You can easily locate your nearest authorized auto light service
station in the classified section of your phone book under
Automobile Electrical Service, or call Western Union by number and
ask for operator twenty five. You'll find it pays. And remember,
from bumper to tail light, you're always right with auto light.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
And now auto Light brings back to our Hollywood sound stage.
Mister Cornell Wilde in Elliott Lewis's production of Allen in Wonderland,
a true story well calculated to keep you.

Speaker 4 (13:41):
In suspense, The blind man led me east along Fifteenth
Street to assure myself I passed my hand in front

(14:01):
of his face. He was blind, all right, If that
was any comfort, I had no choice except to follow him,
But I still couldn't help wishing there have been time
to phone the police.

Speaker 3 (14:11):
You were right on time.

Speaker 4 (14:12):
That's what we like. Yeah, sure, business is business, ain't it? Exactly?

Speaker 3 (14:17):
Young man?

Speaker 4 (14:18):
Exactly? Uh? The dame told me, I get my money
here on that right.

Speaker 3 (14:23):
As agreed one thousand before, two thousand after. If all
goes well, we were informed you're the best.

Speaker 4 (14:31):
The best. Well, sure, what else you pay for something?
You should get the best?

Speaker 3 (14:36):
Wait a minute, is there anyone watching?

Speaker 4 (14:40):
I don't see anybody. It's too dark. Then we go
in here the seller.

Speaker 3 (14:48):
Now my key, follow me.

Speaker 4 (14:56):
I can't see anything.

Speaker 3 (14:58):
Don't worry. I'll be your eye.

Speaker 4 (15:06):
I held on to the blind man's arm as he
led the way down a narrow corridor. It was black
and pitch. As he walked, my nostrils filled with countless smells,
all musky and old. The corridor made a turn and
upperhead of faint light appeared. As we approached, I could
see the outline of a door. We stopped in front

(15:26):
of it, and the blind man knocked with it. Pig
and pepper. The sudden light from the naked bulb was blinding.
As my eyes adjusted, a row of iron sinks came
into view along one wall. The room evidently had been

(15:49):
the building's laundry. Casually shifting my gaze, I observed three men.
One was big all over, hair like a gorilla. The
second was small, rat faced. The blind man went over
to the third, obviously the boss, whose strange glowing eyes
studied me carefully from behind a batter table.

Speaker 6 (16:08):
He doesn't look what I expected.

Speaker 5 (16:10):
What did you expect a countryman? He doesn't look like
a countryman.

Speaker 8 (16:14):
What difference does it make?

Speaker 4 (16:16):
They guaranteed he could.

Speaker 5 (16:17):
Do the job they promised me. A countryman.

Speaker 3 (16:19):
They told us we'd have to take what they sent.

Speaker 5 (16:23):
Sure, he's the one nor mister.

Speaker 3 (16:24):
Positive, the appointed place, the appointed time, the password even
a blind man could see.

Speaker 8 (16:32):
Let us get on with it, Alex, give him the instructions.

Speaker 4 (16:35):
All right, all right, you huh yeah.

Speaker 5 (16:41):
Listen carefully. It is now seven five. They will leave
their hotel at seven point thirty, and they are very punctual.
This is Nicholas. Nicholas. Nicholas will be your driver, my driver.
He will sit in front with him did you bring
a weapon? Well no, I would extremely clever of you

(17:03):
in case you were caught coming here. We have a
weapon for you in the car Carlo.

Speaker 8 (17:08):
Yes, a beautiful mechanism accurate. You will enjoy using it.

Speaker 5 (17:13):
Carlo will be sitting directly behind you. In case anything
goes wrong. Understand well, yeah, sure, just as you say,
they will probably come out together.

Speaker 4 (17:24):
Pray for it.

Speaker 5 (17:25):
If Luck does not smile and Santusion comes out alone,
let him go. Being only foreign minister, he is less important.

Speaker 4 (17:32):
Yeah, I understand.

Speaker 5 (17:33):
This is the Premiere Massini that we want.

Speaker 4 (17:37):
Hi. Yeah, of course you must get Massini.

Speaker 5 (17:40):
If he comes out first, empty your gun in him
and forget Santusion. If they come out together, kill them both.

Speaker 4 (17:53):
Kill. I was being hired to kill Massini, Premier one
of the ball Can Republic, and Santusie in the Foreign Minister.
Their pictures have been in the papers constantly since they'd
arrived for an important UN meeting. Their deaths in the
United States would throw the Balkans into an uproar, and
I was to be the assassin. It seemed like part

(18:16):
of some terrible nightmare. No one knew where I was.
If I gave myself away. They'd kill me on the spot.
I was in it alone up to my neck. I
needed help. I had to think of something. Stalled anything.
You're listening, Yeah, sure, I'm listening.

Speaker 5 (18:32):
Your car will develop engine trouble directly in front of
the park ave new entrance. This would give you a
clear line of fire.

Speaker 4 (18:39):
We were given to understand. You never miss No, that's right,
I never missed.

Speaker 5 (18:43):
Nicholas will be outside the cab, pretending to examine the engine.
You will be alone in the front seat. The moment
will be yours.

Speaker 3 (18:50):
You know.

Speaker 4 (18:50):
Then there there's nothing to worry about, is there.

Speaker 5 (18:53):
That's one thing more. If you fail us, lose your
nerve or decide to change your mind. Once the plan
is in motion, m Harlow has ordered to kill you instantly.

Speaker 8 (19:03):
I will be right behind you.

Speaker 4 (19:05):
Well okay, sure, you guys got a right to protect
your investment.

Speaker 6 (19:10):
All right, it is no seventh ten.

Speaker 5 (19:12):
We will leave in five minutes.

Speaker 8 (19:14):
You could finished, card gamer?

Speaker 4 (19:26):
Hey eh, what what is it? Uh? My money? Yeah?
What about my dough?

Speaker 1 (19:33):
I haven't right here?

Speaker 3 (19:36):
One thousand?

Speaker 4 (19:38):
Oh? Yeah? Thanks play.

Speaker 3 (19:50):
And cigarette young man.

Speaker 4 (19:53):
Huh huh no, no, no, no thanks.

Speaker 3 (19:55):
I seem to sense a nervousness about you.

Speaker 4 (19:59):
A nervous No. I just want to get my hands
on that rod. Gosh, you do.

Speaker 6 (20:04):
That's the spirit, all right, it's seven fifteen.

Speaker 4 (20:12):
Wait now, wait a minute. The rest of the money.
What about the other two grand.

Speaker 5 (20:18):
Carlo has it with him. You will get it the
moment you complete the job. All set.

Speaker 4 (20:22):
Now wait, now, let's see if Carlo's got it. I
have it. It is getting late. We have to I
want to see it. I have it, Come on, come
on to it, But Alex show it there. Satisfied. Yeah,
I'm satisfied.

Speaker 5 (20:40):
I'll go and may luck be with you.

Speaker 3 (20:43):
Good hunting, young man, Good hunting.

Speaker 4 (20:48):
We left Carlo leading now and Nicholas right behind me.
I could only sense that we were headed for the
back of the billing this time. But even if I'd
been able to see in that inky black the narrow
card offered no chance of escape stairs.

Speaker 3 (21:05):
Now.

Speaker 4 (21:06):
I'd try to make myself think of something, but I couldn't.
Only that I was dreaming it all like Alice, and
pretty soon I'd wake up. We came out of the
back of the building into a deserted alley. The big
ape was still behind me and Carlo in front. He
led the way to a large black car.

Speaker 8 (21:28):
You're right in front with Nicholas. It is now seven nineteen,
all right, Nicholas.

Speaker 4 (21:43):
The Carloh the gun, let's have it.

Speaker 8 (21:47):
You will have it in plenty of time.

Speaker 4 (21:50):
But I feel funny with that one. If anything goes
wrong before.

Speaker 6 (21:53):
Nothing will go wrong.

Speaker 8 (21:54):
Nicholas is an excellent driver, and the plan is perfect, perfect.
Thank god, he's too quick for my CEI. If it
had been left to me, it would have been a knife.
I say attention to the traffic, Nicholas.

Speaker 4 (22:15):
We turned uptown and the traffic began to get heavier.
I looked at my watch. It was seven twenty three.
I thought about jumping Nicholas, wrecking the car, but not
with Carlo on the back seat. I could feel his
little rat's eyes burning into the back of my neck.
Any sudden move, he'd be right on top of me.

(22:35):
My only chance was a policeman, a squad car. Someone
I could signal seven twenty five, one more block. You
better give me that gun in time.

Speaker 8 (22:56):
If we had here, Nicholas, perfect seven seven. Get out
and look at the engine.

Speaker 9 (23:06):
Nicholas, Hey, Carlo, pay attention to me.

Speaker 8 (23:18):
Look across at the entrance to the hotel. They will
come out the left hand door. The door man will
signal for their official car. It is right back there,
is it. They will step to the cab before the
car arrives. That is when you fire.

Speaker 4 (23:31):
Okay, Now give me the gun first, the knife knife.

Speaker 8 (23:36):
At the side of your neck. You feel it, hey,
insurance for a good job. Sharp as raison, my friend.
Here is the gun head trigger.

Speaker 4 (23:47):
Careful enough, Hey, that knife. You don't want me to miss.

Speaker 8 (23:51):
You will not miss. It is your business not to miss.
Now keep your eye on the door.

Speaker 4 (24:01):
I could feel the point of that knife just barely
scratched the back of my neck. I looked across at
the hotel. There was seven twenty nine. Everything was normal.
People passed the door man nodded and smiled, but no
one looked our way. I felt the gun go slippery
as my hand began to sweat. They wouldn't come out.

(24:25):
They just couldn't. They'd go out another door. The meeting
was canceled. They'd see us, knew I had a gun,
nothing to worry about. They weren't coming out.

Speaker 3 (24:36):
There?

Speaker 4 (24:37):
Did they come? Both of them? Move the knife? Will you?

Speaker 8 (24:41):
They are walking to the cab.

Speaker 4 (24:44):
Move the knife, take aim.

Speaker 8 (24:47):
I am now, shoot shoot straight, shoot, pulled the trigger.

Speaker 3 (24:52):
Shoot.

Speaker 4 (25:09):
It all happened at once. It all happened at once.
Just relax, you're all right.

Speaker 3 (25:18):
What we've been under a sedative.

Speaker 4 (25:22):
Nurse hospital, my throat. You're going to be all right.
The doctor even said you could have visitors. You can
come in. No, no, you mustn't let them in. Wow,
how are you feeling? Huh? Why? I I feel fine? Lieutenant,

(25:43):
heads buzzing a little shut. You got a pretty nasty bump.
Doctor says, you get over it. You're lucky guy. What happened?
What hit me?

Speaker 2 (25:52):
I did, and that's how you aimed the gun. I
didn't know what you do. It wasn't time, so I
just ran the squad car into the one you were in,
trying to spoil your aim. You were around all the time.
The big one's dead. They don't hold out much chance
for the other one either.

Speaker 4 (26:07):
What did I did kill them? No?

Speaker 2 (26:11):
No, I mean the guys you were with. We had
a tail on you every minute after you left the precinct.
He went to the movie Six of Us The blind Man, Lieutenant,
what about him? I picked him and that other character
up right after you walked out. Got the girl too, Yeah,
that's fine. Just one more thing, None of this is
going to be made public. Might create some sort of incident. Sorry,

(26:33):
but that goes for you too.

Speaker 4 (26:35):
Oh of course, I understand.

Speaker 1 (26:37):
Sorry.

Speaker 4 (26:38):
Times up so long? He long?

Speaker 2 (26:41):
Well, I need a good lawyer.

Speaker 4 (26:42):
I'll look you up.

Speaker 1 (27:06):
