and he's watching that big clock across the street. He

lot in that man's life. The clock across the street
once two minutes fast. There were clocks on all four
walls of the bank that are right on the nose.

I'm it gets near quitting time. He goes by that
clock in front of the jewelry store. Now, in about
thirty seconds, he'll rope off the front doors of the
bank and no more customers will be allowed in today.
You'll have to keep him busy out there tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (14:12):
You're worried about one guy out front, Oh what about
all those tellers and clerk's inside.

Speaker 3 (14:16):
Must be twenty five of us thirty three people inside
that bank.

Speaker 1 (14:19):
Well, who's going to keep them busy? While I'm keeping
him busy. Suppose one of them wants to turn in there.

Speaker 5 (14:22):
You're asking too many questions, got why don't you just listen?

Speaker 3 (14:25):
That's all right, man, I don't want to worry about anything, son.
There are only four tellers inside that bank will know
what's being robbed. We'll be ten blocks away before the
rest of them find out here.

Speaker 2 (14:35):

You only have to worry about the first four. The
fifth one won't be working tomorrow. He's a war veteran
with a hero complex, the only one in the whole
bunch who try for the alarm. But we'll lucky. The
poor man has a spinal injury. Every Friday afternoon he
leaves at two o'clock to go over to the Veterans
Hospital and Brainbridge Boulevard for outpatient treatment. They just close

by the bank clocks three o'clock. By that one over there,

Martin goes into two forty five. I meet him inside
at two minutes to three. Martin covers me while I
work the cage. Is that three by that clock across
the street. You'll go up to that guard and keep
them busy. I don't want him to turn around or
worry about anything that's going on inside. You understand something, Yeah, yeah, sure,
You'll have to keep him busy for at least three minutes.

Speaker 2 (15:36):

Pretty good, Scott. That's why we picture Martin's rights on.
You just go up to them and say anything you like. So,
just so you keep him busy this time tomorrow, you'll
be pretty well set, young fella. Doesn't that make you

I don't know where I got the notion that a
bank robber always he wore a dark suit and pulled.

It was pretty hard to convince myself that an old guy,
a fat guy, and me were gonna heist the Colfax National.
But when we got back to the hotel room and
John Barry began telling me all he knew.

And the people who ran it, and the people who
built it, and the people who owned it. I began
to get a lump in my throat for the bonding company.
He had diagrams, he had blueprints, he knew the alarm
system better than the ginzo who put it in. And
there's a certain safe company back in Ohio that had
make him a vice president tomorrow for what he could
tell him about their own time pass. And until eight

that night, he kept me busier than a flea and
a fat man, telling me about everything. I felt pretty
good about the whole thing, and I was just getting
ready to go up to the room.

Speaker 2 (16:47):

We left the hotel at two twenty and we dropped

his coat pocket. Every one of the tellers were looking
at him with a sort of wide eye like I
couldn't believe it. Old John was nudging somebody in front

of him, looked like a vice president, and they just
kept going from cage to cage where he'd pick.

Speaker 3 (23:21):
Up the cash.

Speaker 2 (23:21):
Nobody made a move.

Speaker 1 (23:23):
I don't think any of the customers that were in there,
or anybody else outside the tellers knew the place was
being robbed. I ended, I'm just going to call mister
ever huh, Well, what are you lock?

Speaker 5 (23:33):
Hey?

Speaker 2 (23:34):
Run a coat? Look you.

Speaker 5 (23:42):
I have a sky I guess shoot into him?

Speaker 2 (23:44):
Just went off. It just went off.

Speaker 3 (23:46):
Get out of here, boys.

Speaker 2 (23:47):
I didn't mean the shoot in. I didn't want to
shoot him.

Speaker 3 (23:50):
You guys know that, dom right, cut up Scottie.

Speaker 2 (23:52):

do it. You taught me to do it. That's what
you did. And I'm gonna tell him too.

Speaker 1 (24:00):
I'm gonna tell them everything you made me doing and
they won't do anything.

Speaker 3 (24:03):

Speaker 2 (24:05):
You got a gun on us? Wow, Hey, to coment.

Speaker 3 (24:10):
That's right, and you can tell them anything you want.

Speaker 6 (24:16):

Speaker 5 (24:25):

Command, So let's see what these police officers want to
talk about.

And remember he's the best looked like any old geezer
you'd find filling prescriptions behind a drugstore counter or reading
books in the public library on Sunday afternoons.
