That’s why Farmers Weekly is taking the conversation to the heart of the primary sector to Take 5 with farmers at various industry events to hear about everything from what's front of mind, to what gets them up in the morning to do one of the most rewarding jobs in the world. So join our team as we head to some of the major events on the farming calendar to get 5 different perspectives from 5 different farmers in 5 minutes. Welcome to Take 5 with Farmers Weekly, where we spend five minutes catching up with hardworking Kiwi farmers to get to know them and their take on the current climate of the food and fibre sector.

Emma chats to East Coast representative Pat Crawshaw, who at the age of 28 owns and operates a prime beef and lamb finishing business with his wife Issabelle in Pātoka, Hawke’s Bay, where they finish around 2500 lambs and 400 head of cattle.

Hailing from the West Coast, Nick O’Connor is representing the Tasman region as he battles it out with his brother Peter.
Nick is currently in his third year studying agriculture at Lincoln University, and hopes the spare time aspect of being a student along with his competitive nature will give him an edge in the grand finals.

Lisa Kendall, representing the Northland region, is a master of juggling – along with raising two young kids she’s regional coordinator for the farm environment awards, runs a small farm and a business doing odd jobs like shearing, vaccinating, repairs and maintenance for lifestyle block owners.

Growing up on his family’s west coast dairy farm, Aorangi representative Peter O’Connor always knew he wanted to be a dairy farmer. Now, only a few years out of university, he has risen up to a management position on a 400-cow dairy farm near Lauriston.

Representing the Taranaki-Manawatū region, Mac Williams is currently studying veterinary science, with his passion for the industry stemming from his upbringing on a small sheep and beef farm and subsequent dairy farming jobs on the West Coast.

Waikato Bay of Plenty representative, Emma Poole says although time may not be on her side this year, while she juggles between her one-year-old son, the dairy farm she runs with her husband and work as a veterinarian, having competed back in 2019, she is confident she has a few tricks up her sleeve.

Representing the Southland region, Hugh Jackson brings with him experience in two of our key industries having grown up on his family sheep and beef farm in Te Akau, spending time in a graduate role at DairyNZ and having now completed a season as a dairy herd manager in Southland.
