Speaker 1 (00:00):
Party here fellas you guys do fantasy football.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
We talked about this.
Speaker 3 (00:05):
I'm looking this isn't.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Related to say is still alive? The Marty I.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
Changed your name.
Speaker 1 (00:12):
You know what I've been doing the past few years
is like my last name is spelled E I S.
It's Isley, and I've been doing like, hey, like last
year it was eyes up here e I S. This
year it's the eyes Chico. They never lie, you know
from Scarface. It's a famous yeah, but it's always a
variation of eyes all eyes on me.
Speaker 4 (00:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
So I'm looking at the app and you know, it's
a day before Sunday, and I got a few players.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
That are on by, so you have to swap them
out with players whore playing.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
This is the dumbest thing ever. But what the hell
does the word by mean?
Speaker 3 (00:49):
B y e?
Speaker 1 (00:51):
What other use of that word is there in the
English language for the word by?
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Why does that mean a week off? And why is
there only is sports?
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Like if somebody else vacation at work, You're like, hey,
where's Debbie this week?
Speaker 3 (01:02):
Oh, she's taking a bye this week? No, Like, there's
no other use for that word in the whole language.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
I have a friend maybe.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
It's because maybe it's because they they they had an
opportunity to go bye bye, and they went away during
that week and they got away from.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Well b y e Brett like it's a made up word.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
Goodbye, All words made up, Martin Bell that b ye yes, yes,
like goodbye it's b ye yes, it's stupid. Who did
you have for English at the South High School? That's
my first question? Or more more importantly, who did you
have an assumption?
Speaker 5 (01:37):
Right?
Speaker 3 (01:37):
You're not going by, You're just taking a week off.
Speaker 6 (01:40):
Well, that's it. You are going goodbye for a week
of action. The thing that I want to say is
the better And this is I'm gonna I'm gonna steal
a line here from my friend Johnny Whosong who says,
is it really a bye? Or are they idol? Because
playoffs you get to buy the playoffs, it should be idle, correct.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
I just think it's idle. The word's dumb, idle. It's
like Shannon, my wife makes up words.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
I swear to god, she does, like we're and they're
real words, but I've just never heard of them before.
Like it'll be something, will be the color purple, and
she'll say that's aubergine, Like, what the hell what you
just made that up?
Speaker 3 (02:22):
And I'll look it up and that is a real.
Speaker 6 (02:24):
Word, Yeah, Martin, people have a vocabulary and it's it's
nothing to be a shame.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
I have a copious amount of words in my box.
Speaker 6 (02:33):
Okay, I do, Hey, because you're using that seventh grade
like vokam with copious right now?
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Don't So we're going to the bank with bye the
why is it? I like where you're going. I like idle.
Speaker 6 (02:49):
I think idol is is better, Like, hey, we're idol
this week. That means that we're we're not doing much right,
But the bye week, I think it's more appropriate for play.
Speaker 4 (03:01):
But aren't there back in the day, didn't they use
that term idol? Like what sport was that? Where where
people were idle? Because that that used to be like
on the wasn't it on the schedule? Or am I
just imagining this?
Speaker 2 (03:15):
And now I think you're right, I'm trying to remember
what it was? Who was idle? Idol?
Speaker 3 (03:20):
Get rid of the word by and uh, you know
that's all I got. I just wanted to like, what
other stupid words are out there.
Speaker 6 (03:27):
That Well, here here's another. So I love I could
I could listen to my friend John Hughson talk. I
gotta rick some hand on. I don't who's John Hughes Soon?
John who song is my brother in law's good friend,
Chris Brennan, a good friend.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
And so he would the world famous John hugh Soon.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
He's well, his dad did.
Speaker 6 (03:46):
Wasn't teacher at s X, but he would go on
campaigns about certain things like why is midnight followed up
by one o'clock in the morning?
Speaker 2 (03:59):
Right, it's midnight? Right?
Speaker 6 (04:00):
Midnight followed up by one o'clock in the morning. Is like,
so there should be a redefinite how would you define night?
And if it is midnight, wouldn't midnight be more appropriate
to be say nine pm?
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Yeah? I can see that, right.
Speaker 6 (04:16):
And so that I mean, these are some of the
things that gets going. And then he starts talking to
me and I just started laughing. I'm like, this is
really good juice.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
Okay, why do you why do you drive on a
parkway but park in a.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
Driveway the old parkway driveway?
Speaker 2 (04:34):
Yeah, like, I like them all. I think I think
they're they're really good. They're really good thoughts.
Speaker 4 (04:39):
So, oh, speaking to that, and this is right up
the same alley the the Nate Bargazzi on Saturday Night Live.
Oh or he's you know, back in the colonial times,
the Revolutionary War, and he's talking about two names, yes, yeah, yeah,
and and what's the other thing? I mean, all the
measurements you everybody in the yard.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
And every time Keenan Thompson would be like, allmen a
free right, and then he would just not answer the question.
Speaker 4 (05:11):
Keena Thompson gonna have that look on his face like
what the hell like this great new world that we're having. Oh.
Then he started talking about you know, uh, they're going
to create a game called uh, you know, called football,
and you get six points for a six points for
a touchdown, and three points when you kick it, but
(05:32):
not all the time. Sometimes it's only one.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Yeah. I love it. I love it when guy goes.
I love it when they guy one gigs. Why did that?
Speaker 4 (05:41):
Sirbody knows so good.
Speaker 7 (05:46):
Welcome to Tales from the Script, a bad As Cincinnati
high school sports podcast that features local coaches and athletes.
You're your hosts, Brett schneeber Hat O'Connor, and Martin Eisley.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
All Right, fellas, so we've all we're all in the
throes of high school football.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
Right, as everybody knows, Brett and I are involved in
the football program.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
I am to a limited degree.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
I just coached freshman Pat your son was you know,
Brady's mister everything else. How He's going to Navy next year.
So we've been in the thick of playoff mode. Right
now that we're out, I know nothing about some of
the opponents that are Division one and Division two that
Muller Anderson are gonna be up against in the teams
and the other brackets. So our next guest is a
(06:45):
gentleman who I follow on all the socials.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Seems to have a deep knowledge of all things.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Ohio high school sport wise, and he does you know
a lot of things in that for prep red Zone,
Ohio ladies and gentlemen, shared Lougan Bill, thanks for coming
on the pod.
Speaker 6 (07:02):
You know, obviously, I think we all know where prep
red Zone is and what it means to all the families.
My first question has got to be, like, how long
have you and your brother Tom been doing this and forever?
So I'm assuming that you guys at birth were great.
We're just grading people. I'm just joking, right, But there's
no relationship.
Speaker 5 (07:20):
There, so you can imagine I get a side question
quite a bit. No, we are not related, but you know,
it's one of those things I don't necessarily just throw
out there. You know, people want to tick related. You
know that's okay.
Speaker 6 (07:32):
So I just see like a baby combine you guys
at like four years old.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Just great, People like that's awesome, that's so money.
Speaker 5 (07:41):
Yeah, but well one of those coincidences, and you know
it's it's okay by me.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
Yeah, welcome, this is this is gonna be a lot
of fun.
Speaker 6 (07:48):
I know that we're really excited to talk about the
Division one and the Division two playoffs as we move
into the final fours. So I guess what your what's
your thought in Division one is we're moving forward?
Speaker 5 (07:59):
Yeah, So, uh, you know, I've been telling people and
I think honestly, and this is not playing to the crowd,
but I think Moeler is my favorite right now and
they've been probably since probably the middle of the year.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
The way uh.
Speaker 5 (08:12):
Ponitowski's throwing the ball right now, I just think he
adds an element of offensive game that that nobody else
has right now in D one. You know, EDS obviously
has been the powerhouse for the last three years, back
to back to back state championships. But you know, they
lost quite a bit on their offensive line. They've done
(08:34):
a great job replacing rebuilding, but you know, when you
lose that much, you know it does take effect eventually.
But uh, you know, and obviously Moeller and that's played
early on in the year. Zach Kackleman had a huge
game for Eds, catching several touchdown passes. I want to
(08:55):
say he maybe ran for one as well. He's actually
hurt right now and they're hoping to get him back
by the championship game if they make it there, but
it's not a given at this point.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
And so Hewll has he been out.
Speaker 5 (09:07):
He's been out at least I want to say since
the first week of the playoffs, maybe week nine or
week ten. It's been a few weeks now. So they've
done it without him in the playoffs for the most part.
But playing Moeller and playing some of the teams that
they've played so far is a little bit different standard offensively,
(09:28):
because the way Moller can put up points, they're gonna
have to put up points as well. They also obviously
lost Brandon White. They're still running back earlier in the
year they've replaced with Eli Helton and with actually there's
the linebacker Gregory Nick. Gregory is kind of their short down,
(09:49):
short yardage back, you know, just kind of shove it
down defensive throat tech running back. But you know that
those who are probably my favorite right now to meet
sleep But uh, you know, right now, I think if
I'm looking at overall favorites, just the way that Moller
their offenses is playing along with you know, their defense
(10:10):
doesn't get the credit because of how good their offense
has been, but you know, they come up and they
show up every week and just hold teams down really
and and uh, you know, so they've they've done a
great job as well.
Speaker 4 (10:24):
Jared said that, Jared, you said that they became your
favorite right at the middle of the season. That might
be coincidentally. We played a Week six right in the
middle of the season and they dismantled us thirty eighth
to nothing. And you're talking about the defense of the offense,
So I can see why they would start to sway
in your your opinion right there, No doubt.
Speaker 5 (10:44):
They definitely they definitely put it all together. I mean,
and and you know, as you know, as a coach.
You know, the best teams they don't hit their stride
till middle or late in the season and and start
to really put together, you know, all three phases of
the game. And you know that's really you know, obviously, uh,
(11:04):
you know, coach has done a great job there and
and putting things together. And you know, Poontosky, he said,
you know, he's just in my opinion, he's mister football
Ohio this year. I don't know what, you know, the
the votes will say, but if they're up to me,
he'd be the guy.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
So well, you know, the good news is next year.
You know, we we've played him three years in a row,
so he's gone next year.
Speaker 3 (11:30):
And oh wait, waitoot right.
Speaker 5 (11:32):
He's coming back. Right. So I talked to him. You know,
he he you know, he's this awesome baseball prospect as
well as you guys know. And and you know, after
his his sophomore year or during his sophomore year, really
he he'd asked me about football recruiting on it. I said, Matt,
do you want to play college football? I said, you're
(11:54):
a Nashley rinked baseball player, and he said, I'd really
like to play football. And so I said, well, you know,
let's talk and see you know, you know what we
have going on. Obviously, you know you're in a great
position with the team you played for to get seen
and all that. But I said, uh, you know, it
just kind of blew my mind that really, you know,
(12:15):
football was you know, uh, something he still wanted to pursue.
And so I think he's I think he's one of
the best players in the country that you know, is
not nationally ranked or not is known about its should
be and and so you know, I think you know,
with this uh this postseason run that they're going on,
he has a chance to really kind of blow up
(12:36):
and you know, like kind of like Drew Aler did
and some of these other quarterbacks have done. Tavian Saint Clair.
You know, obviously physically he's not six four or six five,
but man kick can make all the throws. He's you know,
he's just gutty.
Speaker 6 (12:51):
So yeah, what's what's at.
Speaker 5 (12:55):
Six two is what we have in that uh which
maybe a shade under I don't know, but he's probably
right around six to two. I would say, Ye, he's.
Speaker 4 (13:05):
Got some shaggy hair.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
I know that that that helps, right, Yeah, before we
go ahead and just put Mueller in the state finals.
There's some guys who have been dating the handslup beults
to say about it to the table.
Speaker 5 (13:16):
Yeah, so Centerville is you know, it's one of those
teams that last few years have gotten to the brink
and just haven't been able to get this far. But
you know, they really they're another team that's kind of
been piecemealing it together as the season as what went on.
They have Shane Cole who's a first year quarterback, starting
quarterback who's kind of a dual threat. He's got over
(13:39):
twelve hundred yards on the regular season, passing over eight
hundred yards. I want to stay on the round. So
really he's a kid that you got to worry about
either throwing or running. But really where they want to
make their bones on offenses running the ball. Parker Johnson
is a running back. We had over twelve hundred yards
on the season, a ton of touchdowns. Cool Cool is
(14:04):
their tackle, offensive tackle. He's probably six five, maybe two eighty,
super athletic. He's committed to Purdue, and so you know,
they really want to get behind a good offensive line
and really just try to basically they want to play
keep away and which really for them is going to
suit them best for playing them aller offense that wants
(14:26):
to be high octane and make plays, and so defensively,
Brad Seey is a guy who's gotten to the quarterback
a bunch this year, as almost ten sacks on the season.
You know, they have a couple playmakers on on their
defensive side of the ball. Zaiyir Austin is a is
(14:46):
a sophomore I think is as one of the top
young defensive backs in the state who we have really
highly ranked on our twenty seven board. He actually transferred
over from from Dayton Dunbar Lash well before this year
and so he's kind of been learning their defense and
kind of, uh you know, kind of making his way
(15:07):
and towards the end of the season has been making
some high level plays and actually had a punk return
or a kickoff return already this uh postseason for a
touchdown and so are no touchdowns. Sorry it was a
long long play, but uh, you know, but they're one
of those teams that they're not going to be flashy.
Ryan Swanson's They're leading receiver. Quizi is kind of a
(15:30):
tight end wide receiver hybrid type who who they'll go to.
But yeah, they're not They're not going to make a
bunch of flashy plays, but they're they're gonna play really
good sound defense. Gap more in the defense, they're going
to try to try to keep your offense off the board,
and they're going to try to control the ball on
offense and be efficient and put the ball in the
end zone.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
Yeah, ball control offense might be the only recipe to
keep if you can keep Mueller's offense off the field
and keep Ontowsky throwing on the sidelines instead of between
the hashmarks.
Speaker 5 (16:01):
Not a big play run offense either. You know, they're
the time you're gonna be happy getting four or five
yards of pop and just going down the going down
the field slowly and like you said, I mean, that's
really what you're gonna have to do.
Speaker 6 (16:14):
Yeah, And I kind of liked when when we when
we played them. Not only was the there's just a
lot of athletic things to admire there, but I like
their scheme like you just talked about, like it's the
it's the it's the R it's the you know the
R p O that Hey, I'm gonna read this real quick.
I'm gonna hit it off or I'm just gonna hit
the back of the out backfield.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
Uh, there's a lot of things that they do I
think really well.
Speaker 5 (16:36):
Well in big skill wise, there you're not gonna find
many offenses that have big skill like they do. Matt
Foebler receiving every better. Yeah, you got Hamilton, you got McCutcheon,
and I from talking to somebody that's familiar with that,
I know that that's one of the things that they
struggled with. McCutcheon, I believe it was had a big
(16:59):
game early on in the year against against that and
so you know, it's it's hard enough to deal with
one tight end with size, but when you can match
another guy on the other side who's equal size or better,
you know, it just makes it really difficult because typically
most teams are only gonna have one or two linebackers
that can run and cover good enough to cover one
(17:20):
of those guys, and when you have two guys, it
just makes it even that much tougher. So they're definitely
a you know, it's been the Jordan Marshall show for
the last how many years, right, and now now you've
got to figure out how to stop them through the air.
Speaker 4 (17:34):
So Jared. Speaking of that, Jordan Marshall, is he getting
any time at Michigan.
Speaker 5 (17:39):
A little bit? The first I noticed of him yesterday.
I'll be honest, I don't get to see a ton
of college because it's so hyper focused on high school.
But he did yesterday. I think he had seventeen yards,
so not a lot of yards, and maybe seven carries,
but had a big kickoff return of maybe fifty yards.
I want to say, so yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
So uh.
Speaker 5 (18:01):
You know, it's one of those things started getting integrated
in the system, and you know next year he'll be
he'll be telling the rock for you know, a decent amount.
I would guess, yeah.
Speaker 4 (18:12):
I always. I always think back to the his junior
year when we played him. I was up in the
press box before warm ups, and before they actually did
their team warm up, he was down in the field
and he's kind of warming up with one of the
assistant coaches, and he's out there and he's got his
headphones on and he's got his shorts and his cleats,
and it's week six and the weather was, you know,
it was normal weather.
Speaker 2 (18:33):
Whatever.
Speaker 4 (18:34):
I said. If I had a body like chiseled like that,
I think I would be warming up in nothing but
my shirts every week too. I mean, it was just
an impressive one impressive specimen and you could see why why.
Speaker 5 (18:45):
He had the ability that he did. He's one of
those guys that you better send two or three, have
two or three guys at the point of attack to
try to get him down because one guy was not
going to do it.
Speaker 2 (18:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (18:58):
It almost reminds me when you see like when Oscar
Robertson was there, they ratted off to national championships after
he left.
Speaker 5 (19:06):
Yeah, yeah, And you know, and that's one of the things.
You know, good coaches are able to adapt. And you
see coaches that you know that they have one trick
pony and not say he was a one trick pony
could put pon a towsk. He was young at that
point and so you know, they really relied on the
running game at that point. But you know, coach Oliver
has adapted and and they've really, like you said, schematically,
(19:29):
they're just they're they're tough to defense. So you know
it's kudeous to them.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
Yeah, their scheme's nice. Scheme is really nice. So Division
two do we move on? Move on the Division two
or Martin or do you have other things to say?
Speaker 3 (19:44):
Nope, I was gonna do the same thing I was gonna.
Speaker 2 (19:45):
Yeah, let's let's talk about Division two.
Speaker 6 (19:47):
I know Anderson, we just saw a whole bunch of
Anderson on Friday night, and uh, Brett didn't do a
good enough job in the offensive playbook, so we.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
Ended up losing.
Speaker 6 (19:57):
I mean, Brett shouldn't feel bad Jared, but maybe a
little bit. But no, let's talk a little bit about
what Anderson's got to play and uh the other two teams. Yes,
you dream so big.
Speaker 5 (20:09):
Walnut obviously pulled off the upset of the Millennium.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
That was huge.
Speaker 1 (20:13):
Yeah, that shocked us when we got back and looked
at our phones, like what happened there?
Speaker 5 (20:21):
Shocking enough that they win, but to hold that Massline
offense to seven points is just incredible. But from the
sounds of it, it sounds like Masline didn't do themselves
any favors. From when I heard they had five fifteen
pre snat fall star penalties on offense. So whoa, that's
what seventy five yards and negative offense. It's hard to
(20:41):
get much going when when you're going backwards that much.
And then twenty four total penalties in the game. So yeah,
they had they had ways to kickoff return to win
it for Big Walnut. You know, they really don't have
to do much offensively to get past Maslin because Mason
(21:03):
was kind of for lack of a better you know,
they were just kind of a train wreck all night,
you know, as far as that goes.
Speaker 3 (21:10):
So but but a lot of the time, Jared, that's unbelievable.
Speaker 5 (21:15):
Right, I have never heard of that, and you know,
pre snaff Nonetheless, you know, I get holding, you know,
or you know, even an OPI or something, but fifteen
faalse starts is that's demoralizing if you can't even get
a playoff so.
Speaker 3 (21:30):
This late in the year, come on.
Speaker 5 (21:33):
Yeah. Yeah, So I'm not sure what was going on
specifically there, but Ben Walner's their young team, surprisingly another
team that had some tough losses early in early in
the year to some good teams albeit and in the
occ but Eli stumped. Their quarterback has been really impressive.
Only sophomore uh six three six four pounds, got a
(21:56):
really nice arm. Hasn't been heute, you know, guarding numbers
hasn't been there. But fifteen hundred yards I want to
say of throwing the ball and can run it some
with his legs. Then running back you have Jake Shrek
who who can carry the ball and sorry road team,
(22:19):
Nolan Burley as they're running back. Owen Pollock is is
a talented tight end for them, who's six four or
six five, uh maybe two ten, a guy who can
make plays through the air. He's kind of one of
their But they're another team that they're they're gonna like Centerville,
They're just going to try to grind it out. They're
going to try to try to play sound fundamental offense
(22:41):
of football, special teams. They're going to try to make
plays there and then they're gonna make your inn every
yard on defense. And so you know, that's in my opinion,
kind of what they're going to try to do with
Anderson is really just try to try to slow their
offense down by keeping them off the field, honestly, and
there they fly to the ball. They're physical and they
(23:03):
fly to the ball. So you know, one of the
things that we've seen over the progression of the playoffs
is Justice Burnham hasn't done as much through the air.
Now he's done it on the ground too. In lieu
of that, but you know, I think that's going to
be maybe a big walnuts. First thing is this, right,
stop Drell Turner and Justice Burnham on the ground and
(23:25):
then take away the big play. And you've we've heard
a lot on on the NFL this year of the
Tampa two and and teams can't throw the ball down
and field all this. Well, that's one of the things
you gotta do against Anderson isac is to limit those explosives.
And if you can keep Trace Jalack and guys like
that out of you know, the fifty yard touchdowns and
(23:45):
limit some of those short yard and drum plays, then
then you're giving yourself a chance. But you know, you
give up those explosives and those those touchdowns and points
can start to add up real quickly. So you know,
obviously I like anders and I think you know they're
that they're easily the favorite to win this game. But
you know, when when Big Wanna beats a team like Maslin,
(24:07):
the defending state champion, you gotta you gotta take that
as you know, as you know they're.
Speaker 4 (24:13):
Running line up, lineup, and you mentioned you mentioned playing
defense and trying to keep Anderson off the field, big one.
That's going to have a huge decision to make. Do
you do you play zone and try to keep everything
in front of you, or do you try to play man.
Do you try to send pressure and get the ball
out of Burnham's hands as quickly as possible. In my mind,
(24:35):
you got to you gotta be able to mix it
up both ways, because if you just if you just
sit back and zone the way they're running their buck
sweep scheme right now, they're just going to hand it
off and run bucks sweep with the tailback with uh,
or they're just going to run a little bit of
a you know, a counteraction and have the quarterback keep
it on on on the QB counter And that's what
makes them so hard to defend, is having a two
(24:55):
headed monster in the backfield. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (24:57):
Absolutely, and and and then you know, and when you
go to man, then vice versa. You know, if if you.
Speaker 4 (25:05):
Get caught in the wrong matchup, you know, and if
you don't question at home and get the ball out
of his hand. They've got guys who can go with
with Pining at tight end and and and jaylk at
the you know, the wide receiver. He made a couple
of really nice plays the other night, and he's made
great plays all year. He's probably now he's probably close
to eighteen hundred yards receiving.
Speaker 5 (25:26):
So Justice has done such a great job of running
that offense as well. I mean he's had maybe a
couple of interceptions in the playoffs here, but for the
most part, as much as they put the ball in
the air, he does a great job of making sure
he's taking care of the ball and going where it
needs to and if it's not help, he's not afraid
to tucket and run and get get some easy yards
(25:47):
that way. So yeah, they're a tough, tough offense to
deal with, and I don't feel like their defense gets
enough credit. They're really good, really goods Antwine, Higgins and
and and Ace Austin you know, you know, and other
on Herald of guys they have I'm blanking on his name.
They have an Alex Stander on their defensive line. I
(26:08):
mean they have they have guys that can play on
that side of the ball as well.
Speaker 4 (26:12):
So I can tell you right now, number ninety nine,
number nine, number thirteen, number twenty, they're they're they're three
linebackers along with Higgins and and they're free safety. I
mean he's got five interceptions down in the.
Speaker 8 (26:24):
Season and Saunders Yeah, great, yeah, yeah, I mean it's
just been a it's been a team effort for them,
and and they do a nice job, you know, mixing
up their looks and mixing up their pressures. And sometimes
they play zone they make it look like man, but
then they match up zone on the outside. They'll press
the corners and then bail out like they do a
really nice job.
Speaker 4 (26:43):
They really do, so I think that's very safe. You
can process a lot.
Speaker 1 (26:47):
Jayon Saunders, I believe I read that he transferred in
but wherever he was as a sophomore, he had a
bunch of interceptions and he had several last year. But
he's up to almost like, I think, twenty in his career,
which is an insane amount of interceptions for high school player.
Speaker 5 (27:02):
Yeah, he was a precell Marion, uh before coming to Anderson.
Pricell's coach ended up on it either, you know, I
don't know what the circumstances was, but was not there
anymore and transferring, Yeah, that was what I thought. But
I like coach Flug so well.
Speaker 1 (27:24):
We got the quarterbacks are names Justice Burnham and Eli
Stumped And if that doesn't sound like something out of
the Country Music Awards. I don't know what the don't
These guys both sound like they'd be country music singer.
Speaker 3 (27:36):
Pretty good names, pretty good name band.
Speaker 4 (27:38):
Yeah, or it sounds like Friday Night Lights out of
West Texas is what it says.
Speaker 1 (27:43):
Totally, they going up the other side of the bracket. Uh,
Avon Obin, Uh what do you know?
Speaker 3 (27:50):
I got some affiling.
Speaker 1 (27:51):
I got some guys I work with in the Cleveland market,
and they've been saying all year that Avon is just
ready to freaking rip, that they are juiced.
Speaker 5 (28:03):
Yeah it could be true, right, Uh yeah, they're both
ready to Uh they're both ready to go. So so
actually this is a rematch of the state semis last year,
hoping be Avon to to make it to eventually lose
to Maslin. But yeah, they both have a lot of
(28:23):
returning players. Avon's quarterback Nolan Good actually ended up getting
hurt in the first game of the playoffs last season
and ended up missing the rest of the playoffs. Yeah,
a huge deal for them in their pursuit to try
to make it to Canton. But he is back this year.
He's having a great season. Max Munsey is a really
(28:47):
talented receiver. He's starting to get do you want attention?
I think picked up an offer from Kent State towards
the end of the year. I wouldn't be surprised if
he picked up a few more. He's a legit four
or five kid at receiver. And then out of the backfield,
there's a kid named Kalkman who does a great job
of being physical and as an athletic runner. But defensively,
(29:09):
they they they do a lot of great things too.
They have a young man named Jacob Weatherspoon who has
offers from Ohio State, Michigan, many other power force. He's
a long, athletic cornerback six foot, he's a he's a
I want to say. He made it his freshman year
to the state in Division two in the in the
two hundred or four hundred meter dash, So he's probably
(29:33):
a four or five kid, I would guess as well.
Jirell Fenton is their other cornerback. Super athletic. Ryan Stallarski
is a linebackers six ' to two probably two fifteen
to two twenty can run. He has a offer from
from University of Toledo. So just kind of all the
way around, you know, one of these teams that they
(29:55):
have town all over the place, So it's not a
surprise that, really, you know, it's hard to beat him
beca because they don't give you much room for error.
Hoping the same same on the other side, even maybe
to a greater extent. You have on your defense guys
like Elbert Hill, who is blown up, has offers from
Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon, you know, basically every blue blue
(30:18):
blood in the country. Alabama. You have Eli Lee outside linebacker,
he's in Ohio State commit. You have Ace Brown, who's
a junior edge kid who's six three sixty four two
twenty athletic, and get to the quarterback, he'll be a
P four kid.
Speaker 1 (30:35):
And you got you got three power four dudes on
the same side of the ball.
Speaker 5 (30:38):
Come on right, right, and then offensively, Sam Greer is
six st eight three twenty has out left tackle offers
from Ohio State and other P fours. You know, Nate
Cross just committed to Kent State. He's our center. Brayln
Parker is a kid who's uh, you know, gonna be
a D one kid. It might be like a Matt kid,
(30:59):
maybe be a P four borderline P four kid. Braylan
Feaster break sorry, Brighton Feaster is their running back, and
he's a running back slash linebacker. He's six three, two thirty.
He's just a battering ram. He's going to be a
power for linebacker probably at the next level. So you
just look all over, so.
Speaker 3 (31:20):
Dues everywhere, right.
Speaker 5 (31:23):
The main question coming in the season was who's going
to be their quarterback? And and you had a couple
of guys Trent Hayden and Ethan Rocking Rocking Rock and
Sandwich Rock Scentach.
Speaker 6 (31:36):
Okay, if their parents call in, we'll we'll we'll see.
Speaker 2 (31:39):
Yeah, yeah, we're good.
Speaker 5 (31:41):
So they got both share duties throughout the season. I
believe Trent Hayden's is kind of the guy right now,
but they're not going to put the ball up in
the air a ton. But when they do, Peyton Cook
as their dude on the outside, who's probably going to
be a power for receiver. If not, he'll be a
very high n G five. But uh uh, he's he's
(32:02):
a legit four or five guy on the outside who
can pretty much run every route. So you know, it's
one of those teams where it's like pick your poison,
like you know, defensively, how do you you You can't
just drop back because they're gonna get to you. So
you're you're gonna have to be able to run the
ball and you but you're gonna have to keep them
honest too. So they're they're just a freaking monster to
(32:24):
deal with.
Speaker 2 (32:25):
Who wins in a Division two?
Speaker 5 (32:28):
Wow? So I've been stumping for Anderson the whole year,
But man, any one of those three teams, I love, love,
built big walnuts story, They're they're a little young.
Speaker 2 (32:42):
But they're your least favorite. They're your least favorite. Let's
be seed.
Speaker 5 (32:49):
You know, right now, I'm I'm gonna pick Anderson and Avon,
I think being on the same plane meeting in the
finals and from there it's anyone's game. But but Avon
is just playing with so much confidence right now. I
you know, I've had people on my ears saying they
just they have it going and and much I've heard
(33:12):
from people saying this year was better than last year
as far as teams go. And they lost their starting
left tackle to Michigan, you know, Hamilton, not Luke Hamilton.
So you know, it's just one of those teams that
you know, have a ton of experience at a really
high level and are putting it together. So but that
(33:32):
being said, I wouldn't be surprised if Hobin ended up
winning call either. So it's just so much talent.
Speaker 1 (33:38):
Well yeah, well, Jared, you've been doing this for thirty
years covering high school football here in the state of Ohio.
I guess said. I follow you on all the socials.
That's how I enjoyed content. Enjoy your content. But this
is the hardest part of the pod. I don't know
if you've listened to any of these in the past,
but we're going to hit you with a little segment
called nine for ninety.
Speaker 5 (33:59):
Okay, let's do it.
Speaker 1 (34:00):
Brett Bred's gonna peppy with some questions. Just the first
thing that comes in your head. It's like a Warshack test.
Speaker 2 (34:06):
You know just what.
Speaker 3 (34:10):
Arnold test?
Speaker 6 (34:14):
I think it is a warshack but I love the
Arnold Horshack reference.
Speaker 2 (34:17):
Will Okay, that's that's top notch, dude, that's.
Speaker 5 (34:20):
Top notch, So why pay him the big bucks?
Speaker 2 (34:23):
That's right? Hey, you know what, it's tremendous, right.
Speaker 4 (34:27):
Okay, Well, this one was sent to us from Epstein's mother,
so wan, yes, there you go. Uh, Jared, are you
Are you a cable TV guy or you a chord cutter?
Speaker 5 (34:41):
So we do sprint spectrum streaming, which I'm happy to
do during the during this time of the year because
you know, I can watch all the playoff games on replay.
Speaker 4 (34:50):
So look at you.
Speaker 5 (34:51):
That's a kind of CAUSEI cord cutter.
Speaker 2 (34:53):
I guess can I.
Speaker 6 (34:54):
Ask you a question that's off the bounce here, but
how many high school games do you watch a week?
Speaker 5 (35:01):
So the games in their entirety, it's not as many
as you would think. It's probably more highlights. Yeah, highlights. Yeah,
I probably watched highlights of maybe twenty to thirty games
a week, and and honestly that's just watching several players
(35:23):
in those highlights.
Speaker 2 (35:25):
So I mean, yeah, it's awesome.
Speaker 5 (35:27):
There's enough accumulative effect there where you know, I'm not
watching the same kid over and over every week, you know,
So somewhere in that neighborhood, I would guess, all.
Speaker 6 (35:37):
Right, you're talking to tens of parents right now. What
advice would you give them on getting their kids recruited?
Because our our our our audience is in the tens.
So I want to make sure that that Jared, that
you get yeah, because I mean, you are the guy
in Ohio and I want to make.
Speaker 2 (35:57):
Yeah fucking out man, So I will.
Speaker 5 (36:02):
Retweet and share this as much and we will get
as much traction as we can.
Speaker 2 (36:06):
You go there, you go, you know.
Speaker 5 (36:08):
So ultimately, it's traits. Traits are are what matter. A
lot of people worry about production and production. There's just
so many factors that come into production. Want to you know,
strength of opponents, you know, scheme, you know all of that.
For me, it's it's keep the main thing, the main thing,
football school, being a great teammate. If you do those
(36:33):
three things, they're going to find you. If you're good enough,
your coach is going to put out enough good words.
There are gonna be enough people that are going to
go to bat for you. If you're talented enough, they
will find you. And if if you if you have
to go a level down, maybe then what your your
potential says or what do you think you should The
(36:54):
transfer portal is open and they're looking d ones are
looking for D two's all the time. That's coach up
at University of Finley who's been complaining for a few
years now that his season the team's getting raided every
off season by by power fours and G five. So
you know, you can't be worried about about the recruiting
(37:14):
game because it is a game. Most of it's the
eye to the holder. If you take care of what
you can control, which is your training, your work ethic,
and getting your job done in your classroom, you're going
to have lots of options, whether it's at D three,
D two or D one, D one s FCS levels.
Speaker 4 (37:34):
Okay, well we're while we run that topic. There you go,
what what do you think? Give me another sport that
helps football players? The most good question?
Speaker 5 (37:46):
You know, really it depends on on the position. But
if we're saying skill players, I would say basketball, And
if we're saying defense or offensive lineman, I would say wrestling.
Speaker 6 (37:57):
Yes, yeah, I've been saying that for years. That's awesome,
I was talking to That's true.
Speaker 5 (38:02):
But yeah, kind of assumed in my agree in the spring,
you should be running track.
Speaker 4 (38:08):
Right, no doubt, no doubt. Would you rather? Would you rather,
Jared Lugan bill? Would you rather find a twenty dollars
bill in your pocket or one hundred dollars bill floating
in a porta potty? Geez?
Speaker 2 (38:23):
That's a great question. I know.
Speaker 5 (38:25):
Oh no, I'm not. I'm not too uh hire all
myself to think that I'm above putting my hand in
a porta potty. So I probably take one hundred dollars bill.
Speaker 1 (38:37):
Ny, there's no places, there's no place to rent it off.
Speaker 4 (38:43):
Oh they got those those little under squirt things.
Speaker 2 (38:48):
How quickly are you going to spend this one hundred
dollars bill. You don't have to put it in your mouth,
That's right.
Speaker 5 (38:54):
You can probably have a football game at the concession stand,
so you.
Speaker 2 (38:58):
Know exactly exactly might be hot dogs real quick.
Speaker 5 (39:03):
So I'll take.
Speaker 2 (39:08):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (39:10):
So I'm a teacher and I always start my classes
off every day with the wood you' rather, And this
is one of my favorite ones to ask them earlier
in the year, because you find out what kind of
kids you have right away. And I always preface it
by saying, you know, imagine you're at like a festival,
or you're at like a concert or something like. You
don't have to keep it the whole time, just go
straight to the concession stand and buy something with it,
(39:30):
and you know, wipe it off.
Speaker 2 (39:32):
A little bit. You're good to go.
Speaker 5 (39:34):
I imagine it would depend largely on how many issues
gut issues people had earlier on Okay.
Speaker 4 (39:42):
Yeah, okay, what's what's your favorite holiday?
Speaker 5 (39:47):
Favorite holiday? Actually, we're upon. I'm a big Thanksgiving man.
I just lots of football, just family. I'm an offensive
lineman at Hearts, so I love eating. So yeah, I
would say Thanksgiving.
Speaker 4 (40:02):
Okay, So, if you were the Holiday Czar commissioner, what
are the dates that Christmas exterior Christmas decorations should be
allowed to be put up?
Speaker 5 (40:14):
Well, definitely not before Thanksgiving. But I'm one of those
if you can do it when it's warm out. Hey,
if it's November thirty first and Thanksgiving's already happened, a
more power to you. But yeah, I have family that
I've had it up since the early November. To me,
that blows my mind a little bit.
Speaker 1 (40:35):
But alone, I saw this question being asked on like
Jimmy Fallon or one of those shows to an actress,
and I think they cued it up because she's one
of those people that puts it up in July.
Speaker 3 (40:48):
And he's like, so.
Speaker 1 (40:49):
When, and she was like, listen, there's a lot of
shit going on in this world and a lot of
people suffering, Like you know, if you want to put
your fucking Christmas tree up in June or July because
it makes you feel better, do it. There's nobody here
to look at whatever you want to do it. As
long as it's like the backups, they say, stay ready.
Speaker 5 (41:09):
Well, you never have to put them up if you
never take them down right.
Speaker 4 (41:12):
There, you just leave them up along the gutters, and
then on about December first start plugging them in.
Speaker 2 (41:21):
There you go.
Speaker 8 (41:23):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (41:23):
What's the most most useful app on your phone? Not
including social media? Oh?
Speaker 5 (41:28):
Geez, Google Maps.
Speaker 2 (41:32):
I guess that's fine.
Speaker 4 (41:34):
Yes, I use it for everything everything.
Speaker 5 (41:37):
Yeah, I don't do a lot if it's not Twitter. Honestly,
I don't really use a lot of apps. So I
love it that Google.
Speaker 2 (41:47):
Google Maps.
Speaker 4 (41:48):
Man, you can find what time a store opens, what
time they close. You can get it. It goes take
your Yeah, phone numbers, right to Yelp, reviews, directions, travel times.
Speaker 2 (41:59):
Uh, pat got a day, except how to get there?
Speaker 4 (42:06):
It's real easy, really Okay. This next one is a
multi layered okay, and this this is around Uh, what
defines a sport? Okay, it's fishing a sport.
Speaker 5 (42:16):
Mm hmm. I'll say yes because because it is a competition,
and and two you're getting paid money. On second thought,
it is a competition, and you get paid money to
win the the demo Derby's at the county Fairs. So uh,
(42:40):
you know, I'm a backtrack. I want to say, no, fishing.
Speaker 4 (42:43):
Fishing is not a sport.
Speaker 5 (42:44):
Okay, now, yes, a competition, it's not a sport.
Speaker 2 (42:49):
Okay, I will say that. Hold on, hold on, hold on.
Speaker 6 (42:52):
My buddy played fishing, played fishing for NCI State and
this he was on Fox Sports, remember Fox Sports, the
old regionals, and he is on this thing, and I'm like, dude,
all you do is throw a freaking line in the
water and just sit there for something to buy exactly.
He said, it depends on the day, the temperature, the wind, the.
Speaker 2 (43:13):
Sun, where the sun is. Then you got to change
the bait. You got to the way that it's got
a jig.
Speaker 6 (43:18):
And I'm like, but is it athletic?
Speaker 2 (43:24):
Is it? That's a great point the sport.
Speaker 4 (43:27):
Okay, here's the next one, bowling.
Speaker 6 (43:29):
But I'm casting. Is casting? This casting might have some
athletic ability. I'm skilled. It's skill, is king?
Speaker 2 (43:36):
What would Keene say? Brett?
Speaker 4 (43:37):
Uh? He said, no, it's not is bowling the sport.
Speaker 5 (43:44):
Well, it must take some sort of athletic ability, because
I absolutely suck at it. So uh, I'm gonna go Yes.
Speaker 4 (43:53):
You can drink and smoke while you do it.
Speaker 2 (43:56):
Love it.
Speaker 5 (43:57):
You can at golf as well, and we'll do it
and do it some well in some cases.
Speaker 4 (44:02):
John Daly, Okay. Last one is horse racing a sport
for the animals.
Speaker 3 (44:11):
Who's the athlete? Who's the athlete? The horse of the jockey?
Speaker 2 (44:14):
Right right?
Speaker 5 (44:15):
Uh? You know I I would say yes a little
bit because if you've ever ridden a horse before, you
know that's it does take some athletic ability. And those jockeys, man,
they don't weigh buck over seventy pounds, I think most
of them.
Speaker 4 (44:33):
So uh yeah, there's old ladies in New Mexico who
ride horses every day. I'm just going to say that.
Speaker 2 (44:41):
That's all.
Speaker 4 (44:41):
I'm going to say. If you opened up a restaurant tomorrow,
what kind of food would you serve.
Speaker 3 (44:50):
The bangers?
Speaker 2 (44:52):
Good question. He's you know, we haven't had bread to
a nine for ninety in a while.
Speaker 6 (44:57):
So he's been taking how many how many? How many
times did he rock the deuce? Or he's sitting there
just kind of scratching out ideas.
Speaker 2 (45:03):
He's come. He's saved these for a luger bell. This
is good. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (45:07):
So man, I am just I'm a steak and potatoes guy.
So I would say a steakhouse probably.
Speaker 4 (45:13):
Oh, steakhouse, okay, okay, what about you popular?
Speaker 2 (45:18):
But I would just do a I'm gonna keep it simple.
Speaker 6 (45:21):
I'm gonna make sure my beer is cold and just
make sure I have some wings and some burgers, and
make sure there's a thousand TVs up there.
Speaker 3 (45:28):
Everybody's doing that, Marty.
Speaker 2 (45:31):
I think it makes money.
Speaker 4 (45:32):
Marty, you're the restaurant tour of the group. What'll be
going with cheese conies? That was That was a shocker.
I'm going I'm going Cajun I'm going I'm going Cajun cuisine.
That's what I'm going with.
Speaker 2 (45:45):
Okay, there would be three or four people there.
Speaker 4 (45:47):
Two more will get you out of here. If you
had a walk up song for work every day, what
would it be?
Speaker 5 (45:54):
Walk up song for work? That's that's a good one.
I'm a huge music guy.
Speaker 3 (46:02):
How about how about just a genre?
Speaker 2 (46:03):
Then?
Speaker 3 (46:04):
Metal genre?
Speaker 5 (46:06):
Genre probably would be let's go with nineties R and B.
Speaker 4 (46:23):
Okay, new edition. Maybe we'll end on a serious note here.
Who is your oldest friend? And how did you guys meet?
Speaker 5 (46:32):
So I don't actually have a group of high school
buddies that we meet. We try to meet every Thanksgiving
to hang out. We play cards and have grasshoppers and
have have a fun time and and yeah, so we've
been getting together honestly since we're probably in a freshman
or sophomore in high school, just every year at least
(46:52):
one time, usually Thanksgiving year as we've gotten older. But yeah,
that's so there's probably probably six or seven of us
get together about once a year, and we have obviously
our threads that we talked talk on throughout the year.
Speaker 4 (47:08):
But loving us.
Speaker 5 (47:10):
Yeah, amazing.
Speaker 1 (47:11):
How when you get together with high school but he's
like that and you're sitting around like a fire pit,
you're everybody's mentality immediately reverts back to being fifteen years old,
and it's like you saw, like exactly, you never talk
like I could own a company, he could be like
you know, a Superson said, he's an idiot that you
sat next to.
Speaker 3 (47:29):
As a freshman in like English class.
Speaker 5 (47:32):
Right right, right right, the guy one of our buddies
that forgot his Oakley. Is that the Hooters in Cleveland.
We went up to watch the Dream Team play when
we're in high school. Yeah, yeah, the things you never
lived down.
Speaker 4 (47:46):
Well, Jared, thank you for appearing on nine for ninety.
For your appearance today, you receive a twenty five dollars
gift card to Damon's Grill. It is good for any
location in the state of Ohio.
Speaker 2 (47:57):
That's amazing. I think they've got rips.
Speaker 5 (48:00):
It's awesome.
Speaker 4 (48:03):
Four channels, yeah, four channels.
Speaker 2 (48:06):
Absolutely.
Speaker 6 (48:07):
You know, Jared, you're one of obviously the pristine voices
for high school sports in the state of Ohio. And
just to hear have you guys come on and you know,
to hear your knowledge about how the Division one and
Division two stay playoffs are gonna end up is is
awesome stuff. So so thanks for coming on.
Speaker 2 (48:23):
And it's such such an honor.

what I do. Honestly, it's it's uh, you know, for me,

a dream to play at the next level or or
a dream to make the next level of the playoffs
or championship, State championship one. So it's all about those

shine that they deserve. So appreciate you having me.
