Don't hunt you with it.

Speaker 5 (05:35):

Speaker 9 (05:35):
Up stop out all getting there out this side of
little younger.

Speaker 7 (05:42):
I still got this gun trap, mister.

Speaker 9 (05:44):
That's where your wall was the first into the car.

Speaker 4 (05:46):
Both times thrown it.

Speaker 10 (05:48):
I say, okay, I start walking down the road.

Speaker 4 (05:51):
You look back once and olock.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
I hold my arm, will be all right.

Speaker 10 (05:57):
Hey parking.

Speaker 5 (06:11):
Half an hour later, the couple stopped the passing truck,
which took them into the sheriff's office at Carvel. The
sheriff who was in another part of the count he
was notified. He ordered an all points bullet to be
set out on the stolen car and requested the Texas
Rangers did he give the investigation.

Speaker 4 (06:27):
Upon arrival at the Sheriff's office.

Speaker 5 (06:29):
Ranger Jace Pearson began taking statements from the two victims.

Speaker 4 (06:33):
Now, I'd just like to go over a few things
to make sure we have them straight. Mister Hupper, you
say you had thirty seven dollars in your wallet.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
That's right, Ranger, and Ruth had five in her purse.

Speaker 7 (06:43):
Well five and some changed and it was courty to see.

Speaker 4 (06:46):
Uh huh. The boy who robbed you. All you remember
about him is that he was heavy set and not
too tall.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
Well, I know he was shorter than Ruth and she's
five foot eight.

Speaker 4 (06:55):
Wish we could tell you more of it.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
It was pretty dark over time he was with us.
Couldn't get a good look.

Speaker 7 (06:59):
At his I just remembered something about him. I forgot
to tell you before.

Speaker 4 (07:03):
Don't look for the hell anything will help missus. Harper.

Speaker 6 (07:06):
Well, I didn't notice that he had his sleeves rolled
up right to his shoulders, like he was trying to
show off his muscles.

Speaker 4 (07:11):
I see now about this girl. The fella said he
was whiz did you? Oh, all sheriff?

Speaker 2 (07:17):
How did you?

Speaker 4 (07:19):
Okay? Sorry I wasn't here sooner, but at least I
got some good news for you.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
Oh what's that, sheriff?

Speaker 4 (07:23):
They found your car just a few minutes ago?

Speaker 9 (07:25):
I would have to release.

Speaker 4 (07:26):
Where'd they find?

Speaker 2 (07:27):
A sheriff a couple of miles from where the hold
up took place?

Speaker 4 (07:29):
Just got it on the radio as I was driving up,
and I told him I'd relay the message on to
youth berk and someone take us out there, or that
won't be necessary, mister Harper. They're towing it in right
now to yes, ma'am, so they won't destroy any evidence.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
R I'm sure that we've got it back.

Speaker 4 (07:44):
The fellow that helps you folks up, was he working
a loan of mister missus Harper? Think there was a
girl in it with him, that's right, But like we
told the ranger, we didn't see her. She probably followed
and picked him up after he ditched your car.

Speaker 9 (07:56):
That sounds like the tow truck coming in now.

Speaker 4 (08:00):
Up, that's them. I expect we better get out there
all right.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
Sure, hope that little rat you didn't get my typewriter.

Speaker 4 (08:06):
Typewriter, Yeah, I was bringing it home to do some
work over Sunday, put in the back seat of the
car when Ruth picked me up to the office. It
won't be long before we know if he took it.

Speaker 7 (08:16):
That boy seems so nice. What's just no telling about people?
Is there?

Speaker 4 (08:21):
No man?

Speaker 2 (08:21):
Especially that one Beckham?

Speaker 4 (08:23):
My next steel hurts where he was pressing the gun
against it. Oh, that's kid's vicious, real vicious. We do
everything we can to catch him before he gets up
with anybody else. The car is right over there. I'll
make out a receipt for it. You have to keep
it here only for the night, so the lab has
a chance to go over it. It will see that
you get a ride home. Thanks you let me see
wait a minute, Astir Harper don't touch the door handle

(08:46):
and hasn't been gone over for Prince yet. Oh sorry, Ranger.
I'm all right, and just shine my light through the
window here.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
Oh that's what I was afraid of. Typewriter's gone.

Speaker 4 (08:57):
I suppose you know the serial number?

Speaker 2 (08:59):
No, but I reckon I've got it at home.

Speaker 4 (09:01):
We're guarantee we'll alert dealers in secondhand stores in case
he tries to sell at someplace.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
Honey, didn't you have a package?

Speaker 4 (09:08):
You're there too?

Speaker 7 (09:09):
Oh? Why yes, I almost forgot about it. A couple
pair of stockings I bought the tatternoon.

Speaker 4 (09:13):
What'd you buy him, ma'am? Good desk shop? Mind telling
us the brand and size?

Speaker 7 (09:18):
They were more jed size ten and a half long.

Speaker 4 (09:21):
You know if any other place in town carries that
brand of stocking?

Speaker 7 (09:23):
No, I'm sure they don't.

Speaker 4 (09:24):
Range you, thanks, ma'am. I reckon, we can let you
folks go home now. Mister Harper, will you phone us
as soon as you find out that typewriter number?

Speaker 2 (09:31):
Sure, a wheel ranger.

Speaker 4 (09:32):
I'll get my deputy to give you a ride. Sandy,
would you take mister mss Harper home in your car?
Right o? Thanks?

Speaker 7 (09:39):
Come on, honey, Oh sure, be glad to get hold of.

Speaker 4 (09:41):
What do you want to do tomorrow? Jay, check with
the manager of the drive in theater. Yeah, I'd also
like to talk to the owner of the shop where
those stockings were bought. And Jays, I can understand why
you wanted that typewriter number, but why did you want
to know all about the stockings. It's just possible that
the girl in that hold up team will come in
and try and exchange the stolen stockings for a different size.
Wouldn't have to change him if she wears the same
size as Missus Harper. I don't think she does. The

(10:03):
boy rapped the Harper's is short, and what they said
about him, I doubt if he's the type we would
go with a girl taller than he is, certainly not
one as tall as Missus Harper. Well, suppose the girl
is short, she could still take a large stock inside. Yeah,
but the ones Missus Harper bought were ten and a
half long. Nobody but a tall person would want to
wear them. You could be right, jes alphone the woman

(10:24):
who owns the dress shop, first thing in the morning.
It's only a chance, but I believe it's worth a try.
The following morning was Sunday. The lab crew had completed
its work and found nothing that would help us. At
ten am, the sheriff called Missus Herker, the owner of
the dress shop, and asked her to come down and
open up her store. She agreed to meet us. In

(10:46):
fifteen minutes. We went there and waited main Street. Sure
is clad. Sunday mornings. Uh huh, you'd never believe this
street was chocked full of cars yesterday. Did missus Herger
say she was coming right down? Sure? I gazed. If
you and how we man ours, she'll be along.

Speaker 9 (11:01):
Sure, hope you'll be a locate the sail slip on
those stocking and we're.

Speaker 4 (11:05):
Lucky today Sunday the girl does try to exchange him,
she won't be able to do it till tomorrow. Believe
that's miss Herger's car.

Speaker 9 (11:11):
Now I'm coming around the corner. Yep, that's share Hello,
sir broll hoty, miss Herger.

Speaker 8 (11:20):
Excuse me for being awake, but Amory took off from
the car and I had to wait.

Speaker 10 (11:23):
We got back.

Speaker 4 (11:24):
I'm sorry, ma'am that Amory.

Speaker 9 (11:26):
Every time I need the car, he's gone.

Speaker 4 (11:28):
Sorry, we had to trouble in the first place. Oh,
no trouble.

Speaker 8 (11:31):
You wanted to see the sail flip I made out
for Ruth Harper on those stock and that right rangers, Yes, ma'am. Well,
so in the store, let's see where's that che.

Speaker 9 (11:48):
Always forget that burgler.

Speaker 7 (11:51):
Let me get out of tea and turn that off.

Speaker 8 (11:58):
Lucky, I got a couple of police officers somebody to
have me arrested for breaking in my own store.

Speaker 4 (12:04):
Would you like us to wait here while you look
up that slip?

Speaker 8 (12:06):
And no, come on over the counter. Might take me
a while to find it. Seeing the time, Missus Harper
doesn't have a charge.

Speaker 4 (12:13):
You come and just get my sales book.

Speaker 7 (12:18):
She came in here about four o'clock yesterday.

Speaker 9 (12:21):
Didn't she?

Speaker 4 (12:21):
I believe she said it was about five Yeah, I remember.

Speaker 10 (12:25):
Now you know what size?

Speaker 7 (12:27):
She bought?

Speaker 4 (12:28):
Ten and a half long?

Speaker 8 (12:29):
M see, no, no, that's mediumly.

Speaker 9 (12:36):
Hah hah.

Speaker 7 (12:37):
Here TI's two periods of ten and a half long.

Speaker 8 (12:40):
She gave me a ten dollar bill.

Speaker 4 (12:42):
What's the number on the sales slip, missus herger? Uh?

Speaker 8 (12:45):
Five?

Speaker 7 (12:45):
Oh? Four?

Speaker 10 (12:46):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (12:47):
You want to take it along ranges, No, ma'am, We
just want to remember it. A girl may come in
and try to exchange those stockings. If she does, we'd
like you to phone us and keep her hair till
we come.

Speaker 10 (12:57):
How am I gonna do that?

Speaker 4 (12:58):
And we leave that up to you, But it's important
that she stays in this store till we get here.

Speaker 7 (13:03):
Wendy, you think it's your shore?

Speaker 4 (13:05):
Maybe tomorrow, maybe the next day, maybe not at all.
You think you can handle it.

Speaker 8 (13:09):
Well, I've never tried anything like this before, but I'll
do my best.

Speaker 4 (13:20):
When we left missus Hergar's store, we went to see
the manager of the drive in theater. He didn't recall
seeing anyone who answered the vague description of the boy
which the harpers had given us, but he did tell
us the names of a number of people who had
been at the theater the night before. We questioned them,
and several remembered seeing a boy with his sleeves rolled
up to the shoulders. He'd been with a young girl
in a convertible. He took statements from these witnesses. Around

(13:42):
two o'clock on Monday afternoon, we had them come into
the Sheriff's office to sign their statements. Here you are,
mister Hammer, I thank you. Sign all six copies. Please,
Miss Lindsey, here's your statement. Is you sure where to sign?
The sheriff? Sure, jeez, I'll get it, nor person.

Speaker 7 (14:02):
I can't go crowd.

Speaker 4 (14:03):
What is it, ma'am?

Speaker 7 (14:05):
There's a girl here with the same stockings I told
him in his harper. If she wants to.

Speaker 4 (14:08):
Exchange him, we'll be right over.

Speaker 8 (14:11):
I don't know how long I can keep her ranger.

Speaker 4 (14:14):
You better hurry.

Speaker 9 (14:26):
There's three girls in there case any of them could
be the one we're after.

Speaker 4 (14:29):
Yeah, I don't mean the Turger as she is now
coming toward the front of a store.

Speaker 7 (14:36):
Ranger, Ranger.

Speaker 4 (14:39):
Where is she, ma'am?

Speaker 9 (14:40):
Look over my shoulder, straight down the counter.

Speaker 7 (14:42):
Is the one at the end with the mouthy hair?

Speaker 4 (14:44):
Uh huh? Where are the stockings she brought in on.

Speaker 8 (14:47):
The counter right next to where she's standing, So you'll
sit there.

Speaker 4 (14:50):
Too, thanks, miss Hurger. Hey, you were right about her
not being tall.

Speaker 8 (14:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (14:54):
I think she's got an idea we're coming after her,
and it's nervous, all right. I don't think she'll try
to run for it, do you genuine? One direction? She
can go right out this way. Excuse me, miss. We'd
like to see those stockings if you don't mind, we'll
take a look at the sales slip.

Speaker 2 (15:09):
Now. There it is on the.

Speaker 7 (15:09):
Counters getting medium stocking alone.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
Sales slip checks out.

Speaker 4 (15:13):
I have any four again, lady, where'd you get them?
We think they were stolen? Well I didn't see them,
maybe not, but we'd like to hear all about how
you did get them. Come on, miss.

Speaker 2 (15:37):
In just a moment.

Speaker 1 (15:37):
We will continue with Tales of the Texas Rangers, starring
Joel McCrae as Ranger Jase Pearson.

Speaker 3 (15:43):
We often hear the phrase the American Way, but do
you ever start to think just what that means. Of course,
it means many things, our traditions of freedom, our democratic government,
and our.

Speaker 4 (15:54):
System of justice.

Speaker 3 (15:56):
But a fundamental part of the American Way is our
economic system. Our economic system is not perfect, that's a
simple historical fact. But the American economic system has brought
greater material means for happiness to more people than any
other system the world has ever known. Especially in these
critical times, all of us should work to defend and

(16:16):
improve this system. And the best way to defend and
improve our economic system is to learn.

Speaker 4 (16:21):
How it works.

Speaker 3 (16:23):
You can get a free booklet explaining our economy by
writing to box ten times square station, New York City.
Just write to box ten times square Station, New York
City and ask for your free copy of the Miracle
of America. Now back to Tales of the Texas Rangers.

Speaker 1 (16:47):
We continue now with Tales of the Texas Rangers and
our authentic story drive in.

Speaker 4 (16:59):
We took the girl with us in the car. We
learned that her name was Grace Maud Comeson. She lived
in a house in the outskirts of town with her mother,
who worked as a waitress in an all night dinner.
When we questioned Grace Maud about Saturday night's robbery, she
was sullen and denied knowing anything about it. We decided
to take her out and discuss the matter with her mother.
On the way, we tried to talk to her some more,
her sullenness changed to hysteria. Didn't steal those duggins and

(17:23):
they didn't love nothing from no people in the car.

Speaker 9 (17:25):
Your boyfriend did and you helped he got it?

Speaker 7 (17:28):
Friend?

Speaker 4 (17:28):
What were your Saturday night? Grace Maud?

Speaker 9 (17:30):
Keep telling you I was home, but you can't prove it.

Speaker 7 (17:33):
Why do I have to prove it?

Speaker 4 (17:35):
Why do you keep picking that nobody's picking on you?

Speaker 7 (17:37):
You weren't, so everybody's always picking on me.

Speaker 9 (17:40):
Your mother is not going to be very heavy when
she finds out you're in trouble.

Speaker 7 (17:46):
She said, you can't talk to much. She's sleeping.

Speaker 4 (17:48):
Imfraid we'll have to wake her up.

Speaker 7 (17:50):
Mighty likely you woke up, she can solve and she's
woke up before getting up.

Speaker 4 (17:53):
Time that your place up ahead, Yeah, nice, little huse.
Bet your ma works hard to keep it up that nice.

Speaker 7 (18:01):
Don't start preaching on me. Everybody's always preaching that me.

Speaker 4 (18:05):
Go ahead, Grace Mond, he in there, Come on.

Speaker 7 (18:10):
She'lly you. Don't let me just pick on me just
like you're doing.

Speaker 9 (18:12):
Come on, let's go.

Speaker 4 (18:14):
I look, Grace mart If you haven't done anything, you
don't have to be afraid.

Speaker 7 (18:19):
He afraid.

Speaker 4 (18:20):
Then we just have a little talk with you and
your mother.

Speaker 7 (18:22):
Nothing she can tell you.

Speaker 4 (18:23):
We'll see about that.

Speaker 2 (18:24):
Come on.

Speaker 7 (18:27):
Other night. You're freedy, you were hurt?

Speaker 4 (18:30):
All right to go in? Yeah, joys, go get your mother.

Speaker 7 (18:37):
I don't know, yes you Grace mom. Yeah, he's out
there with you, but trying to talk to you.

Speaker 4 (18:44):
Police officers, ma'am.

Speaker 3 (18:46):
I'll be right out.

Speaker 7 (18:47):
You see, I'll catch it. You will grow up, and
I'm gonna catch you.

Speaker 4 (18:50):
Don't have anything you want to tell us before your
mother comes out.

Speaker 7 (18:52):
Don't you go picking on him. You're getting away, all right,
Grace Mom.

Speaker 4 (18:57):
He's the way I love.

Speaker 7 (18:59):
I will go all night and I was sleeping.

Speaker 4 (19:01):
I'm sorry we had to wake you up.

Speaker 2 (19:02):
Man.

Speaker 4 (19:02):
What's it all about?

Speaker 7 (19:04):
I didn't do nothing? Quiet?

Speaker 4 (19:05):
Grace Marge, what's trouble, Rangers. We think your daughter might
have had something to do with a hold up on
Saturday night.

Speaker 7 (19:10):
They didn't. I tell you, I didn't hold up. What
makes you think Grace Maude mixed up in anything like that?

Speaker 4 (19:16):
She tried to exchange a couple of pairs of stockings
in the store in town today. They were stolen, along
with some money and a typewrite.

Speaker 7 (19:22):
I didn't still doing them day I stolen, flie. Are
you sure they were stolen?

Speaker 4 (19:27):
There's no doubt about it, ma'am.

Speaker 7 (19:29):
I tried the green rough rash. Hasn't been with her
as much as I should.

Speaker 4 (19:33):
Be, working like a do night. But I can't believe
she'd do anything real bad.

Speaker 7 (19:37):
I didn't look.

Speaker 4 (19:39):
We think she helped her boyfriend in the robbery.

Speaker 5 (19:41):
Boyfriend?

Speaker 7 (19:42):
You've been going out with that alle again. I told
you to stay away from him. Ain't something a long time?

Speaker 4 (19:48):
What's the OL's last name, missus Comport? I don't know.
He worked on one of the ranches near here.

Speaker 7 (19:52):
I didn't like the way he asked it with Grace Maud.
He's too old for her, been around too much. While
she's just saying that kid already growing on. You're too
young to be running around with ma'am.

Speaker 4 (20:00):
Will you go around with me?

Speaker 7 (20:01):
Don't you like you? All right? You talk to me?
I got you know, I'll slap your kettlef you hear me?
You hear you go? You're picking on me again?

Speaker 4 (20:09):
What's our last name? Grace?

Speaker 2 (20:11):
You're lying?

Speaker 4 (20:12):
I'm not.

Speaker 7 (20:13):
I don't know his last email.

Speaker 1 (20:15):
Ain't they not?

Speaker 4 (20:15):
Maybe not?

Speaker 7 (20:16):
But you're not going out of this house again at
not until I tell you already there you follows me.
I can go in the double feature. I don't care
what I promise. You're not going.

Speaker 8 (20:25):
I'm sorry, Rendel, you want to ask you some questions.

Speaker 4 (20:29):
This is Compton. We don't want to hold your daughter
if she's innocent. But she hasn't told us where she
got those stockings. We hoped you'd make her understand how
serious this is.

Speaker 7 (20:38):
Grace, mart I want you to tell me the truth.

Speaker 4 (20:39):
Where did you get those stockings?

Speaker 7 (20:41):
Where did you get him? I want for truth?

Speaker 4 (20:44):
Where'd you find him? Grace?

Speaker 7 (20:45):
Mind on the street?

Speaker 4 (20:48):
Why didn't you tell us this before? Because I know
you can.

Speaker 8 (20:52):
See you're telling the truth.

Speaker 4 (20:53):
Sure, I'm telling you the truth.

Speaker 7 (20:55):
They getting trying to be nice, nice. What you're talking about,
it's going to give him you for your birthday. I
found this tugging big trying to change for your side.

Speaker 4 (21:06):
It's sure you weren't getting them for yourself. No, I wasn't.

Speaker 7 (21:10):
It was just trying to surprise you. You don't have
no money to buy your season, but you might if
you got a job once in a while, to give
you something nice for your birthday.

Speaker 8 (21:19):
And nobody believes me, Grace Maud, were you really gonna
give me those stocking shry ones?

Speaker 7 (21:27):
Who knows? You don't know. I've been looking for it job.

Speaker 4 (21:29):
Oh this week I was looking gray small.

Speaker 7 (21:33):
I found them sucking this morning.

Speaker 4 (21:34):
I've been thinking that you were gonna like him.

Speaker 7 (21:36):
You didn't have no pretty sucking You don't even believe me.

Speaker 4 (21:43):
I don't know, Rangel.

Speaker 7 (21:44):
I think she's telling me truth.

Speaker 4 (21:47):
I think she is too. Missus Compton looks like we
could have made a mistake. Well, you had no way
of knowing. We didn't mean to cause either of you
any embarrassment.

Speaker 8 (21:55):
Forget it, Ranger, Grace mod I'm sorry uh yelled at
you before us.

Speaker 7 (22:02):
I appreciate your thinking about my birthday. Get you something
real nice? You just wait, mo, Yeah, can I go that?
Don't We'll beat you to head a promise they won't
ask you to go again until I get a jump.

Speaker 4 (22:16):
Yeah, alright, I'll drop you out on my way to work.

Speaker 7 (22:19):
What you think?

Speaker 4 (22:21):
I reckon? We be going, ma'am? Come on, sheriff, right, Ranger, Bye,
Grace Mard. We didn't believe a word. Grace mart had
said she fooled her mother, and we wanted her to
think she'd fooled us. We're pretty sure her plans went
beyond seeing the movie that night, and we hoped sooner
or later she'd lead us to her boyfriend. We waited

(22:44):
near the house in our car till a little after
seven that evening, Grace Maud and her mother came out
and got into an old galoppe. We followed him into town.
Missus Compton let Grace mart out in front of the theater.
We parked half a block down the street and waited.
I reckon. We got ourselves out of I'm killed before
she comes out of that picture show. Uh huh. But
if she doesn't try to.

Speaker 9 (23:04):
Get in touch with her boyfriend tonight, we just keep
watching until she does.

Speaker 4 (23:08):
Maybe I could get a couple of deputies to that. Jase,
she didn't go in that movie house after all. Now
she's starting down the street a right, Tortois said. She
sees this working down in the seat as far as
you can. Yeh, lucky you haven't got your horse trailer
hooked on back and she'd spot ashore. Let's just hope
she doesn't see the radio aerials. I can hear her.

Speaker 9 (23:27):
Now sounds like she's still hidding his way.

Speaker 4 (23:29):
Yeh, keep it low, shot. I was sure she'd notice this,
or she's going.

Speaker 9 (23:40):
She just turned the corner into a side street. Come on,
I reckon, she's going.

Speaker 4 (23:47):
Someplace to meet him.

Speaker 10 (23:48):
Now.

Speaker 4 (23:48):
It's hard to say.

Speaker 9 (23:49):
I've been thinking about this house all the great moods
mother mentioned today, wondering if he's the one where after
so have I.

Speaker 4 (23:55):
I don't want to ask too many questions about him.
Watch it going around the corner. Chair, Hey, jash.

Speaker 9 (24:00):
Without telling them, the convertible and her, they're pulling away.

Speaker 4 (24:03):
Stay here and watch where they go.

Speaker 2 (24:04):
I'll get the car and pick you up in a
few seconds.

Speaker 4 (24:12):
By the time I picked up the sheriff, the convertible
was out of sight. The sheriff thought they'd headed toward
the main highway leading out of town. He was right.
We spotted them just past the town limits. After three
miles of hard driving, we began to gain on them.
Five minutes later we were one hundred yards behind the convertible.
They see it's Jase.

Speaker 2 (24:28):
He's stepping it up a little.

Speaker 4 (24:29):
It's just what we're gonna do.

Speaker 9 (24:31):
Want me to try a sean at their time?

Speaker 4 (24:32):
I don't think so. We'll pull alongside of them.

Speaker 2 (24:35):
We're making it.

Speaker 10 (24:36):
Yeah, yell out him to pull over it holl over,
you pull over to the side, watch yourself.

Speaker 9 (24:45):
He's gonna shoot. Is that thirty little hang on sheriff.

Speaker 2 (24:49):
He'll force them over.

Speaker 9 (24:56):
He's making a break for that brush there with a girl.

Speaker 4 (24:58):
I'll get him.

Speaker 2 (24:59):
Go bet crop the gun.

Speaker 5 (25:02):
You making you right.

Speaker 1 (25:05):
I'm warning you.

Speaker 4 (25:06):

that brush with your hands up. Happen to your face
of some one for you now, I don't want to
hurt your son.

Speaker 9 (25:16):
Drop that gun and come out with your hands up.

Speaker 4 (25:18):
That's your last chance. Oh sure, give me that gun.
Now get up my should up. Let's go.

Speaker 2 (25:34):
