Speaker 1 (00:00):
You ever have one of those moments where life throws
you a curveball and instead of ducking, you just swing
like crazy. That was me six months ago, Just another
day in the gym, punching the heavy bag, sweating buckets,
wondering if I'd ever get a fight that didn't pay
in drink vouchers. Then out of nowhere, Carl, my manager,

(00:26):
calls me into his office. Now Carl's not exactly the
kind of guy you expect big news from. His idea
of a big opportunity usually involves parking lots and guys
who don't even own boxing gloves. So I walk in
and his office looks like a tornado of bad decisions
hit it, papers everywhere, a trophy that might have been

(00:50):
for bowling, and a smell that made me think something
died under his desk. He leans back in his chair,
chewing on an unlit cigar like he's some hot shot
promoter and says, Jimmy, I got news that'll knock your
socks off. I'm thinking, great, my socks could use a break,

(01:12):
but then he hits me with it. You're fighting, Sugar
Ray Robson Headliner Madison Square Garden. At first, I thought
he was joking. Sugar Ray Robson. The guy's a boxing legend,
fast as lightning, hits like a freight train, and slicker
than a politician at a fundraiser. Me, I'm just a

(01:35):
guy who punches harder than most and hopes for the best.
But Carl wasn't joking. He had the paperwork and everything.
He says, this is your shot, Jimmy, you pull this off,
and you're not just another gym rat. You're the hammer,
the guy who took down Sugar Ray. And all I
could think was if I survive this, I better at

(01:59):
least get paid in cash this time. But something crazy happened.
I said yes, not because I thought I could win,
but because sometimes you just have to step up and
take your shot, even if it feels like you're swinging
at a tidal wave. So six weeks that's all I

(02:20):
had to get ready, and let me tell you, those
six weeks were the hardest of my life. Griz my trainer,
he's old school, like still thinks Rocky was based on
his life. Old school. He had me running stairs, sparring
with guys who loved punching me way too much, and
even doing yoga helps with flexibility, he said, yeah, flexibility

(02:47):
to cry. When I tried to touch my toes, he'd yell, Jimmy,
stop throwing punches like your swattin flies. Sugar Ray ain't
going to be scared of a stiff breeze. And I'd
shout back, trying griz, but he'd just shake his head, muttering,
try harder, or Ray's gonna use you as a speedbag.

(03:08):
Real motivational stuff. Then came fight night, Madison Square Garden,
the lights, the cameras, the roar of the crowd. It
was like stepping into another world. And there I was
in the ring, staring down Sugar Ray robson himself. The
guy looked like a movie star. Me I looked like

(03:32):
the before picture in a fitness ad. He grinned at
me like he already knew how this was gonna go,
and said, hope you stretched, big guy. Don't want you
pulling something while you're swinging at air. The bell rang,
and let me tell you the first round. It was
a masterclass in humiliation. Sugar Ray danced circles around me,

(03:56):
landing jabs faster than I could blink. Every time I swam.
He wasn't there. I swear At one point he whispered,
you sure you don't want a refund. But then in
the second round something happened. I stopped chasing him. I
planted my feet, waited for my moment, and threw a

(04:16):
hook to the body and it landed. Oh, it landed.
I felt it, heard it, saw the shock on his face.
For one second, I thought I've got him. The crowd gasped.
Griz was on his feet, yelling stay on him, Jimmy,
don't let him breathe. But sugar Ray, he just grinned.

(04:39):
That's when I knew I'd made a mistake. He was hurt, sure,
but all I'd done was wake him up. One combo later,
jab cross, uppercut, and I was seeing stars. Then came
the left hook, the one that sent me to the mat,
And as I lay there, staring at the ceiling, all

(04:59):
I could think was, well, at least the lights are pretty.
So yeah, I lost, got knocked out on national TV.
But you know what, I took my shot. I stepped
in the ring with a legend, and for one second
I made him stumble. That's more than most people can say.

(05:19):
Now I'm back in the gym. Grizz still yells at me.
Carl still smells like regret, but I'm training harder than
ever because next time, I'm not just going to make
Sugar Ray stumble. I'm going to make him fall, one
punch at a time.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
