A reading from the First Book of Kings, the Lord
appeared to Solomon in a dream at night. God said,
ask something of me, and I will give it to you.
Solomon answered, O, Lord, my God, you have made me
(08:57):
your servant king to succeed my father David. But I
am a mere youth, not knowing at all how to act.
I serve you in the midst of the people whom
you have chosen, a people so vast that it cannot
be numbered or counted. Give your servant therefore an understanding
(09:22):
heart to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong.
For who is able to govern this vast people of yours?
The Lord was pleased that Solomon made this request, So
God said to him, because you have asked for this,
(09:46):
not for a long life for yourself, nor for riches,
nor for the lives of your enemies, but for understanding,
so that you may know what is right. I do
as you requested. I give you a heart so wise
and understanding that there has never been anyone like you

up to now, and after you there will come no
one equal to you.

Speaker 18 (15:43):
The Lord be with you. A reading from the Holy Gospel.
Speaker 22 (15:47):
According to Matthew, Jesus said to his disciples, the Kingdom
of Heaven is like a treasure buried in a field,
which a person found winds and hides again, and out
of joy goes and sells all that he has and
buys that field.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
Again.
Speaker 22 (16:09):
The Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant searching for
fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price,
he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.
Speaker 18 (16:20):
Again.
Speaker 22 (16:21):
The Kingdom of Heaven is like a net thrown into
the sea which collects fish of every kind. When it
is full, they haul it ashore and sit down to
put what is good into buckets.
Speaker 18 (16:33):
What is bad they throw away. Thus it will be at.
Speaker 22 (16:38):
The end of the age the angels will go out
and separate the wicked from the righteous, and throw them
into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and
grinding of teeth. Do you understand all these things? They
answered yes, And he replied, then every scribe who has
(16:58):
been instructed in the Kingdom of Heaven is like the
head of a household who brings from his storeroom both
the new and the old.
Speaker 18 (17:09):
The Gospel of the Lord.
Speaker 8 (17:26):
Good Morning, where we finally got out of the farm right,
but we kept the He kept the uh. The parables
here we had Jesus for the past two weeks have
been we're talking about seeds growing plants, and he was
talking basically, parables are there for to understand God and
(17:47):
so he has he has this telling us about God
and how his love and his care and and what
you know, how response to it and to to his
is that care and love.
Speaker 9 (17:57):
And so that's what those parables are.
Speaker 8 (17:59):
The past two weeks have been all about giving us
an understanding of who God is, because you know, God's
out here and we try to we try to understand
him by the things that we know. But today we
have him telling us about a parable about the kingdom
of Heaven. Never think about what Heaven's going to be like,
(18:20):
you do, What do you think is gonna be like?
It's wonderful. That's about all that's about. Where we go
right and know everything that you think is wonderful and
what we put into that understanding of Jesus doesn't describe heaven.
Speaker 9 (18:37):
He doesn't say, oh.
Speaker 8 (18:38):
We'll all have well, have big cars, or he doesn't
say anything like that, well big houses, does say, have mansions,
But he doesn't tell us anything about what it's really
going to be like. But what does he say in
these parables? He says, the Kingdom of Heaven is worth
everything you have on.
Speaker 9 (18:57):
This earth, very important.
Speaker 8 (19:01):
It's something that you want more than anything there is,
And it'suc That's.
Speaker 9 (19:07):
What these parables are all about. Today.
Speaker 8 (19:09):
He's turned into us and in saying making certain that
you you have your your eyes focused on the kingdom
because nothing else really matters. Well, before I get into this,
I want to mention something about that first reading. You know,
the first reading was this was after the after King
David had died and his son took over King Solomon.
(19:33):
And of course what does Solomon ask for from God?
He says, I want I don't want riches, I don't
want anything else. I want I want wisdom, to know
that what's right, how I can to help my people.
Oh boy, Solomon knew what was what he's after, You
know what the Kingdom of God is all about. He
(19:56):
goes right along with these parables. He says, hell, you know,
he says, I want wisdom. I don't want to And
even God turns to them and says, God, bless you.
He says, I bless you because you don't want riches
or fame or all of these other things that the
earthly life has.
Speaker 9 (20:12):
You want to show the love of God to the
people that you serve.
Speaker 8 (20:19):
Yes, you will be granted the wisdom, the greatest wisdom
there ever was. Oh for that wisdom here, that we
may have the wisdom of Solomon, that we may understand
what is most important in our lives. Goes right along
with this gospel. I love the response oils on today. Lord,
(20:40):
I love your commands. How many of us controlled? Did
you realize what you were singing? I mean it's the truth.
I mean everybody, everybody says.
Speaker 9 (20:49):
Oh do we have to do that?
Speaker 13 (20:51):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (20:51):
Do we have to do this?
Speaker 9 (20:53):
I mean it's a reminder to us.
Speaker 8 (20:56):
How about God's commands are leading us to nothing else.
God's commandments are there so that we may see and
understand what God has for.
Speaker 9 (21:06):
Us, And we complained about them. Do I have to
do that?
Speaker 1 (21:11):
You know?
Speaker 8 (21:12):
The Catholic Church, it's so full of all these commandments
and whiles and everything. It's it's there for you so
that you may see the glory of God, that you
may see the kingdom and understand that the Kingdom is
the greatest. This morning, when I got up, I turned
on the news. Did you know yesterday was National Lipstick Day?
Speaker 9 (21:38):
National Lipstick Day.
Speaker 8 (21:39):
They showed a picture of the mall Millennium and I
guess it was one of these cosmetics stores.
Speaker 9 (21:47):
The line was was wrapped around the whole, the whole.
Speaker 8 (21:53):
Mah there was that people waited our several hours to
get there to the lipstick twelve to seventeen dollars tube
of lipstick.
Speaker 9 (22:03):
It was that worth that much for them lipstick? Oh yeah, yay.
Speaker 8 (22:13):
Also heard that the lottery yesterday nobody won. Nobody won,
so that means Wednesday it's gonna go up from two
hundred and forty seven million.
Speaker 9 (22:27):
I have heard year after year after.
Speaker 8 (22:30):
I've been since i've been a pastor, every time it
goes up, someone always comes up to me and says, Father,
say a prayer that I win the lottery and you
won't have to worry about anything here at the parish.
Oh yeah, sure, yeah, I'll make I'll take care of
(22:52):
those finances. I said, yes, as you fly off to
Rio and spend your life there. You know, it's it's
amazing the things we hope for in this life, the
things we strive for, the things that we hold so
dear to us, And Jesus is telling us the Kingdom
of Heaven is better than all of those.
Speaker 9 (23:15):
What are we going to get our act together?
Speaker 8 (23:18):
What are we going to remind ourselves what's more important?
In this world, in our lives.
Speaker 9 (23:24):
That's exactly what he's talking about.
Speaker 1 (23:27):
You know.
Speaker 8 (23:27):
I don't know if you've ever heard Father Benjamin by
the Benjamin speaks about he always wanted to be a
pro baseball player.
Speaker 9 (23:35):
He's very good.
Speaker 8 (23:36):
In the fact, that's why the men of Holy Family
always try to grab him to play softball, because he's
their ringer. He is he is, he is very he's
a very good baseball player. But he says, you know,
he was all the way past college and everything else,
and then.
Speaker 9 (23:50):
It dawned on him one day that was this worth it?
Speaker 8 (23:55):
And I said, oh, good, good man, And he says,
that's when he went into the seminary. I said, that's
that's when he decided. Now, the thing that I thought
I wanted the most. I'm probably telling on him, but
I mean it's a true He's not here this week,
so I think I can't. But as the truth, that's
that's what he realized. The thing that he wanted the
(24:16):
most was to be with the Lord.
Speaker 9 (24:19):
That's what we all should be.
Speaker 8 (24:21):
That's what the call of our faith. This is what
these parables are about. Jesus doesn't describe the Kingdom of Heaven,
but he tells of its worth and of all the
things we strive for, and in this world, all the
things that we we spend our time and efforts for
mean nothing as compared to what God has in store
(24:44):
for us. Can we get that and focus when we
when we do things in this world? Can we make
out that understanding of and in our in our actions
and in our in our questions that we place before
ourselves and what decisions we make. And so that's those
of the This is the thing that's should be number
(25:04):
one in our lives. He uses several several parables to
describe this. But these parables are here to make us think.
And I think it's this gospel so wonderful in the
sense that every so many years we hear this, because
every so many years we need to be slapped in
the face and say, you know, where is my life going?
(25:26):
What am I doing with it? Where am I where
am I aiming to? You know, we tell our kids, oh, yes.
Speaker 9 (25:33):
You want to be a doctor or a lawyer.
Speaker 8 (25:35):
Or oh somebody that makes lots of money or famous
or big football star or whatever. But we hear all
of these things, but in reality, we want our children
to be with the Lord, we want our children to
understand what's most important. We want ourselves to understand that too.
(25:56):
You know, they always say that you could tell where
your heart is by what you see in your checkbook.
Speaker 9 (26:04):
What all the things that you're.
Speaker 8 (26:05):
Spending money on, all the times, the efforts that you're doing,
that's where your heart is. Well, I you know, be
that as it may. I think the most important thing
is that we grab hold of.
Speaker 9 (26:17):
What's most important in our lives.
Speaker 8 (26:20):
And Jesus is telling us, do you understand He's turned
to the disciples.
Speaker 9 (26:23):
Do you understand this?
Speaker 2 (26:25):
Oh?
Speaker 8 (26:25):
Yeah, you know, it's like typical disciples like the rest
of us. But He's constantly telling them that, Hey, there's
an old story about this couple who used to go
out on Friday nights and they went out, and they
go out for every Friday night, and they'd bring the
babysitter over for their little young girl ten twelve somewhere
(26:46):
around there, and so she was one day the babysitter
caught up and one Friday night is the babysitter carder says,
I can't make it. I can't make it. And here's
the list of several other people. I said, my girlfriends
that could do it. So the one cause gets gets
one of the babysitters and the night right before she's
ready to go out, and the babysitters comes into the house.
(27:09):
The little girl happens to see her mother. She's taken
all her jewelry and putting into a pillowcase and hiding it.
And the little girl asks her mommy, what are you
doing that for? What's going on? She says, well, we can't.
I can't trust trust this new babysitter with with our
greatest possessions.
Speaker 9 (27:32):
Well that really made the little girl feel really good.
Speaker 1 (27:35):
Didn't it.
Speaker 8 (27:37):
And it's and it goes to show you how sometimes
we we failed to see what's really important in our lives.
Those rings and necklaces were more important for her than
her child. Well, the reality of this, this gospel turns
to us and makes us aware of that. You know,
(27:59):
the Kingdom of Heaven is for us, but we have
to strive for it. We have to make certain that
the commandments of God are wonderful because they lead us
to His kingdom.
Speaker 9 (28:23):
Let us profess that faith.
Speaker 8 (28:26):
I believe in one God, the Father, Almighty, Maker of
heaven and earth and.

you might love in us what you loved in your son,
(36:19):
by whose obedience we have been restored to those gifts
of yours that by sinning we had lost in disobedience.
And so Lord, with all the angels and saints, we
too give you thanks, as in exaltation we acclaim.

the Holy Spirit, you give life to all things and
(37:47):
make them holy. And you never cease to gather a
people to yourself, so that from the rising of the
sun to its setting, at your sacrifice may be offered
to your name, that, our Lord, we humbly employ you
by the same spirit, graciously make holdy these gifts we
have brought to you for consecration, that they may become
(38:10):
the body and blood of your son, Our Lord Jesus Christ,
whose command we celebrate these mysteries. For on the night
he was betrayed, he himself took bread, and giving you thanks,
he said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it
to his disciples, saying Take this all of you, and
(38:34):
eat of it, for this is my body which will
be given up for you. In a similar way, when
(39:08):
supper was ended, he took the chalice. I'm giving you thanks,
he said the blessing, and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying,
take this all of you and drink from it, for
this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of
the new and eternal Covenant, which will be poured out
for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Speaker 10 (39:32):
Do this in memory of me, Oh mister, real fame.
Speaker 7 (40:03):
In this.
Speaker 5 (40:08):
And until.
Speaker 8 (40:26):
Therefore, Our Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the
saving passion of your son, his wondrous resurrection and ascension
into heaven, because we look forward to his second coming,
we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice. Look,
we pray upon the oblation of your church, and recognizing
(40:48):
the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile
us yourself. Grant that we, who are nourished by the
body and blood of your Son and filled with his
Holy Spirit, may become from one body, one spirit.
Speaker 9 (41:01):
In Christ.
Speaker 8 (41:03):
He make of us an eternal offering to you, so
that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect, especially
with the most blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with
Blessed Joseph her spouse, with your blessed Apostles and glorious martyrs,
and with all the saints, and whose constant intercession in
your presence we.

We asked this through Christ, our Lord. I have several
announcements mentioned last week. We have an upcoming change for
the Sunday night schedule. Our pastoral Council has concluded that,
(56:50):
beginning on August twenty seventh, the six o'clock PM Mass
will be celebrated an hour earlier at five o'clock. This
time change will allow increased programming time for our Youth
and our Young Adults ministry on Sunday evening. There is
a letter in the bulletin you that I addressed this
as well. I've received several happy comments, and I have
(57:13):
several received for several other comments. Can't I can't please everybody,
I guess, but please you read that as well for
the ideas behind this. Only a few days left to
register for religious education classes.
Speaker 9 (57:30):
At the reduced rate. All are encouraged to complete the registration.
Speaker 3 (57:35):
CCTN and its programming are made possible by your generous support.
