Diabetes is something that has hit the African-American community hard but even harder with our toddlers. We are finding that more and more toddlers are being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, faster than we can find additional diabetic knowledge and supplies to support them.
In this week’s episode, I will be joined with my 6-year-old daughter Ce’Onna Meilani who is a Type 1 Diabetic and was diagnosed at just 3 years old. In light of it being Valentines Day we will be working together coloring some valentine’s day items for our bonding time while also discussing what she remembers about being diagnosed and how she feels she is adjusted; she will also share her tips for other little kids on what they should do or how they should handle their diagnosis during the painful times she has experience while dealing with her own diagnosis.
This two-part series is going to really open your eyes to what a toddler goes through as it comes straight from a toddler going through the pain on a daily basis.

now, if we're eating something, see Alma likes to eat more than she's
supposed to have Okay, you seethis number, it's going up. So

(05:33):
let's not do that anymore. Let'ssee what I hate. We pass stuff,
guys. So today we're gonna talkabout diabetes and no, I hate
when we have these and they justum don't have like some of the camps
don't have the carves on the backso that we can look the rid to
talk about it, and we're lookthrough it and give it. Oh,

(05:58):
this Mommy brand is no joke.Yeah, I'm so sorry. Okay,
So it's fourteen grams per eleven pieces. How many pieces did you have already?
See on the four? Okay,so since she had four, guys,
I'm gonna give her six seven more. You want to pick your colors?
Yes, you can pick your colorsand then I'll give you influence for

(06:19):
that. Oh, let's said thefour cards. Fourteen grams of cards per
eleven pieces. Get seven. Thatway you can have something, but you
better eat them slow throughout the wholevideo. Do not go picking some up.
Let's hit the role running. Nowthere's little paintbrushers. I'm not sure
that's why we put the big setout. M I want something like this,

(06:46):
Mama, you want something different, different, pains who maybe from trub
Is Bulah. Look, Lenny, mama, have you can try this this
time? Oh we're missing Oh mygosh, God. We tried to get

and over like I'm gonna try thesehave some decorations, Mama. We need

(07:12):
a plate, two plates, apoutpaint? Which paint brush you're gonna use?
That's what act you can use theone I can't with it. It's
gonna take you all day to paint. I'm a friendly. Want to get
an eat. I'm gonna take thiscandyway just to be safe. Okay,

(07:32):
okay, so it can be overhere and I can eat open. No,
I was gonna put some of thatstuff as decoration on our Okay,
perfect, put that down, moveit a little bit. Are you gonna
go get us two plates for thepaint? Please put the pump up?
Oh guys, this is hard toopen. We got the game? Want

(07:53):
too? Oh? Which is happening? Oh? I think the ram scored
again. I want this. I'my'all call this is water based. You
might mix colors and stuffy, guys. I'm so lucky. Felt like stuff

(08:18):
was coming out. These little thingsare hard. Oh my gosh, baby
for me, Oh that was soscary. I was actually scary. Remote
out quick. I'm gonna be mad. Okay, So y'all can't see the
lighter we get, see, Ineed that light on. So while we

(08:39):
paint, I'm gonna put that lighton, y'all, and then I'm gonna
come back to you indemn it whenwe get finished, because I feel like
I'm in the dark. First, why you didn't want to get up at
first for a plate? But nowyou're up to be nosy like I don't
understand. Guys, felt me understandwhat's she doing? Like it's not making
anything answered. I don't know howto tickle your mom. I don't know

(09:03):
how to tickle a mom or mymom. Your mom don't like to be
tickled. I stop to be tickled, my grown woman? Do grown y'all
out there? Okay, mamas? Are y'all the ones out there like to
be tickled? Would you like tobe tickled by your kids or your man
or anybody? I just don't seeit. I ain't the one. I

(09:24):
am not the one. I'm thereone. Daddy tackle me all the time.
That's cool. Your daddy is supposedto tickle you when you was a
baby? Is you tickle you oryour mom? Both of them? Problem?
We can ask my MoMA that question. Can you tickle me? Feel
on my name? You know I'vetickled you before. You're trying to get

(09:46):
me to tickle you now? No, we're focused on the video. So
my first question I want to askyou guess what we're gonna talk about?
Why are we do this? We'redone a little bit of everything today with
this. We're gonna talk about whatlife is like, adjusting to being a
die about it since we're doing thisvideo together and I was not gonna take

(10:07):
that's the plan for the day abouthealth. That is health, So we're
gonna talk about that so we canhelp other people. Okay, that's what
you're doing as long as we canhelp other people. That's cut. Look
guys who have a clean plate ofthese colors and they're looking so pretty?
Don't you agree? More? Theypretty? You know what I'm gonna start.
Let's just start here, guys,to see if these actually work on

(10:30):
the wood, these little quick sticksthat's green. Um, so my first
question to you see on them you'regonna try blacks always gonna try black eyes.
Oh these are likesome? Nope, they didn't come out. Let me
see yours, Okayne, But greenis coming on? Minds, Maybe the
black don't work no more. Maybeit's just Oh, I just had an

(10:52):
idea what I'm gonna do just bydoing this? Guys, look, oh
my goodness, oh my goodness, about to make this pop in. So
let me want to ask you.Hey, you want to try my grain?
Yeah? What I want to askyou is being a diabetic, right
has been hard and sometimes easy?Would you say what's easy about being a

(11:18):
diabetic? Let me ask you thatfirst. Is there anything that's easy about
being a diabetic? To be goodand strong and health And the bad thing
is that I get sick? Yes? Yes, So having your insulin,
you're saying, makes you strong andthat helps. So she basically said,

(11:41):
guys that her having insulin makes herhealthy and strong, and the bad thing
is that she can get sick ifshe doesn't have insulin, if she her
numbers are too high, if shehas keytones in her p and what else
causes you to go high? Um? What calls me to go high?
Having a large sugar like but nowI want that home to your dad right
now. Nope, and we ain'thaving it. Your mama is not having

(12:05):
it, so seealla. At first, guys, let's talk about this.
When she first got diabetic, wenever really had a lot of sugar in
the house, and all she wasreally used to drinking out of sugar was
apple juice. So for a while, I want to be upfront with you,
guys, I actually blame the applejuice as being a part of too
much sugar in her body because thatwas the only thing she had was water,

(12:26):
milk and apple juice. When youget wick, you are giving tons
of tons of apple juice, tonsof tons of milk, and she drinks.
We always influence the water. Wealways have water bottles wherever we are.
This is hers and that was mine. Care. If we leave the
house for the day, we alwaystake our waters with us. All of
us have that. My husband,my son Amy got a water bottle for

(12:48):
the dogs as well when we travel, So we're really big on drinking water,
and no they're not. But Idon't want to use my I don't
want to use all these for this. But this is not great, yell
you guys, So I guess wecould. We might have time to do
another the other x and os,but because I was getting wicked, and
I felt like that was the onlysugar she really had when she was young.

(13:09):
I didn't think about the foods, the baby foods and stuff like that
because she wasn't really eating nothing thatwasn't healthy. I felt like when she
got diagnosed, part of the reasonwas because she had so much apple juice
from I'm ready to getting back onthat, but use nothing but a little

(13:31):
wick, is what I want tosay, right, guys. And I
had to realize for a long timethat whatever was gonna happen when her body
was just gonna happen. It wasjust fate, and it was just that
it was nothing. When you becometype one, there's no roma reason of
why your body your pancreas shuts down, or your pancreas is now accurate um
or not produce an insulin. So, guys, what I remember is that

(13:52):
in the beginning I was in denialbecause I would think I told you,
guys. In the last video, she was going through the Honeymoon stage,
where the Honeymoon stage talked more aboutwhere your body thinks that you still produce
an insolent, but if it is. It's at a minimum, and it's
going to be shutting down soon.Your pincers is going to stop producing insolent
at some point soon. So Iwas in the night and I was like,

(14:13):
well, no, she still seemsto be fine. Everything looked good,
da da. I kept saying allof that stuff. Now realized that
her body was going to start tostop producing in one. Let me ask
you a question, what do youneed your phone for? Em mine?
But now you can tell me typetwo. In type two is someone who
has diabetes that they can control. They have it from maybe their eating habits

(14:37):
was not great, maybe they endedup being in a place where they was
diagnosed unfortunately through circumstances or situation. But they don't have the same exact thing
that you have. Three, letme finish, there's no type three.
First of all, it's just okay, you're trying to go down the whole
number list to type ten to takeone stop bibby. So basically, so

(15:05):
that's basically what I was going tosay about that. So now that Siana
knows that, okay, when shestarted to get low, we would have
like a little piece of candy orapple juice. So now you're giving her
even more apple juice because she wasn'tdrinking once juice at the time. She
was so young that I think mostdiabetics would have orange juice over the apple
juice. But they were suggesting thatI give her a little juice bots where

(15:26):
I wasn't giving her a lot ofjuice. And if I had to give
her anything, it's gonna be applejuice, water based apple juice, or
just apple juice or water. Sonow that she's gotten older, she's gotten
familiar with, Oh i'm low,I need a piece of chocolate. Oh
i'm lor, I need some appajuice. Oh I'm low, I need
something to drink. Oh I wantsome juice. That is probably my hardest
thing to have accepted and deal withbecause I feel like she's accustomed to it

(15:50):
now that she wants it during thattime, but also she wants it on
times but she's not low, andso it's really hard to break that from
her and let her know that shecannot have juice or apple juice all the
time, saying with chocolate and candy, she just want to eat it,
Like at first she wasn't sure whatcandy was. We never really introduced that
to her, and now that shehas that sweet too, is just then

(16:12):
gone to another limit. Now wetry to with some some stuff. I
still give her sugar free so Ican see like how to look like um
put in um yellow I all thatstuff should free apple sauce, all of
that stuff, and it doesn't seemto matter with her. So you know,
the thing about it is, asa person who's not diabetic myself,

(16:33):
you give me something that's no sugarfor a long time, I'm good.
You give me something with sugar andthen try to take me back to no
sugar. It's a rot. Ican't do it. So for her,
I still get amazing the fact thatshe just don't tell, can't tell the
different. It's like she'll have somejuice and then she'll have some sugar free
apple sauce and should be fine.So um that those are some of the
tips and the things that we doUM do is try to give her as

(16:56):
much sugar free vegetable chips altern topasta because she's only eat a handful of
things. And if there's any otherdiabetic moms out there, please you know,
comment below and send us a messengeror email and let us know.
But who has the same struggle. They have very picky taste bugs. And
because she's still young, she onlyeats stuff like chicken nuggets, French fries,

(17:21):
spaghetti, pepperoni, pizza, icecream, desserts her thing like sometimes
she knows that brings her back upto so she'll get like ice cream sandwich
oreo ice cream on a stick. So those are some things that we deal
with. But is there anybody elsethat go through the same thing that we
go through when it comes to thechoices that your kids to eat, the

(17:41):
things that your kids eat, thechoices that they make, do they want
more stuff less stuff? And isthere anybody else dealing with the same thing
where your kids only eat those thingsthat Sianna eats. You know? And
I have someone that I definitely knowwho is very close to our family.
We love him. His name isname. Also shout out to name.
Are few watching this, But hehas a struggle I think with certain things

(18:03):
that he liked to eat too.At first, he used to eat a
lot of stuff, but I noticed, I think stuff like spinach. She
says, it's something that he wouldlove to eat or he used to eat,
but he can't have it. Sohe's Type one as well, but
he's taught me so much in termsof like what Sianna should be feeling and
things like that. Because Sianna wasn'tfeeling when she was low, when she
was high, she was too youngand she was diagnosed to it. She

(18:23):
couldn't tell me these things, andso I would have to look at her
and look at her symtoms. Likenow I can look at her eyes and
tell when she's low, and there'sjust other things that I feel like has
really been a learning process. Iknow, I was talking to our dan
game all right, mommy gas, look at it. Look at my thing.
See I'm going something different. Youdon't know what I'm doing girl,

(18:45):
anyway. So that was my onequestion. Those are the answers to that
one. My next thing is whenit comes to being diabetic, Sianna,
what are some foods you would tellpeople to stay away from from? I
chilled them to stay away from hotTomala dot chips? But they're allergic to

(19:12):
you allergic to them or you justdon't like them because they hot? How
are you allergic to? A girlfriend? Tell me that? What pretty serious?
I don't even know that tomorrow taste. That's the red things that mommy
had recently there spicy, not myred hots. The round circle ones,

(19:32):
the red house are around circle, the long ones that were red. Do
you remember that they were in thebox because the red house is in the
bag. Yeah, I eat thosetwo guys. Um, So those are
some things you stay away from.Anything else? What about drinks? What
are some drinks they should stay awayfrom that? You know it's not healthy
for them. You should stay awayfrom the sugar drink Mama had to do

(19:56):
for you whatever. Oh you meanwhen I did my test that made me
sick. She's talking about, guys. She is talking about when I took
the test for I got to watchthat on my channel actually, but you
need to video about it. Yeah, I did because it was disgusting and
I was trying to do the processfor my YouTube family. I really want

(20:18):
to see it. But guys, that is the gestational diabetes test that make
the drink they make you drink forthat, which is a sugary drink.
And when you do the hour testand it's one sugary drink, but when
you do the three hour test andit's another sugary drink, that's even more
sugar. It makes you so sickand I threw up from it and so
it's disgusting. So she's saying, stair bathed, will stay away from that.
That thing will kill you if youdie bat Like seriously, it was

(20:41):
just too much. I don't understandwhy they need so much sugar to test
shoe. So any of my pregnantmoms out there, respond because I know
they know what I'm talking about, especially if you high risk or have had
some overweight issues before pregnancy, they'reprobably going the most likely test you for
being just having gestation of diabetes. So that's all right. So guys,

(21:02):
this is what mins is looking like. It's coming out pretty cool. We're
gonna dimp the light wenday we showit. Oh that's kind of cool.
You can't flip that one. Sonow you get to do the old over
there, and I need to hurryif and catch up with you that you
can do the X. Yeah.I don't know which color to use next.

(21:22):
Let said this white comes out?Oh this is beautiful. Guys see
this light and it's horrible book anyway, it's horrible for what we don't but
good for talking. So see onthat. My next question to you,
please that we don't have. Ohwe got white paint, guys, so
this might not come out as good. Who it's not. It's not too

(21:44):
bad, Sianna. I wonder ifI can put the white paint on it,
though, Guys, I did theCOVID test. Oh yeah, we
have to do COVID test because Siannagoes to work on Wednesday. So when
they made us through COVID testing todaya couple of days before you go in,
which I thought it is crazy becausehe's gonna test us when we get
to work, y'all can see thatwhite though, let's get back to the
bright one. I'll show y'all inthe end. But I think if I

(22:07):
let me say, I can putsome white paint on that and go from
there, that's even better. I'mloving how smooth this paint is set.
Right. Mommy hasn't painted in awhile, and it is relaxing, guys.
Native baby can do because I ain'tgot signed for it. The okay,

(22:30):
even the baby goll die from eatingthat. Why are you always talking
about eating? You want it forthe past three four to see, I'm
been talking about everything she was noteating, guys in general, But she's
been saying something about she wished allthis stuff was edible to eat? Paint?
What was the other stuff? Stop? What are you doing? Did

(22:52):
y'all see that she was on?This is not your makeup brush? Do
the next one? Come on?All right, let's just see us.
Guys, Actually looks really good.Look at that lighting. That looks really
good. Mama, all right, here's yours. Take your time and do
some different colors while I finish up. But let's tell them how Let's talk

(23:15):
about when you were diagnosed, whathappened with school? Let's tell them what
happened with school? Oh okay,so guys, I've been on miss Claudia's
and I wanted you here again.Well we'll go get to that and tell
them why you're going to her again. But what is the reason? Let
me see him on another couple.Um, what happened when you got diagnosed?

(23:38):
Was there anybody to take care ofyou? Cool? My family?
That's right. Sianna was diagnosed andshe was going to daycare since she was
six months old. And when shegot diagnosed, guys, at three,
she could not go back to anyschool where we live, in the city
that we live in, there wasno facility that had no facility that taught

(24:03):
you about to eat them slow. You're not getting anymore no facility, guys,
I don't know why I don't sayno my boo? Who can't read
that? Oh she can't read it, y'all? That is right? How
do you know that? Say myboo? And it says love on the

(24:27):
back. Oh, this looks likesome lakers. What I'm let me see
love on the back when you doknow the word love because we write that
in the cards, so you knowthat word. Oh, mommy is killing
the game over here. Mama isgonna be on fire, my mama.

(24:47):
Oh my god, I amost wantto little So, guys, what happened
is let me finish something out.So Sila was not able to um get
any care. Her current daycare ladywas afraid of thinking care of her,
and they didn't want to learn howto do the needles. We had went
through so much work. My motherin Lawn found somebody at the top of

(25:10):
the hospital that ran in the hospitalthat was willing to train them because they
spoke Spanish. They speak Spanish, and all the people where we go at
Chla was willing to train her.Train anybody we need it, but they
at the time was not coming. This was before COVID Soldier. At the
time, they wasn't going to commuteall the way to my house and where
I live at, so that wasa problem. So with that said,

(25:30):
we ended up not having anybody totake care of Siama. And after weeks
of trying to really convince them thatone person it was a different girl.
It's miss Sonya, who was nottoo far from us. And the great
thing about Miss Sonia is that shewas familiar with insulin and rejection and stuff

(25:51):
like that, and her body rejectedinsulin, so she had a little situation
where she had to give herself somestuff. I believe what she she wasn't
even diabetic. That was just arare thing that happened. That was really
crazy. So she was so opento learning with see on the head.
By this time we had the pumpand she was really open to learning everything.

(26:11):
Guys, I went too far overthe line. See my little TV
gold I was killing it, butI'm messing it up now. Tape Mottle
packet. Poor guys, that's allwe have today on talking talkers with type
one diabetes. I think you allfor tuning in I think you all for

(26:32):
the support, I think you allfor the love, and we look forward
to hearing from you guys and seeingyou in the next episode. The FCB
