Speaker 1 (00:00):
Name, call sign channel, and what is the most positive
change of seeing hand radio the last several years.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Jason case five H. Tobb of Ham Radio two point zero.
The most positive change in the last two years, that's.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
A hard question.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
I can tell you what the most positive change has
been in the last five or ten years.

Speaker 4 (00:18):
But the last two years.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Well, parks on the era, Okay, parks on the air,
I would say now. It officially started in twenty sixteen
with the National Parks on the Air for a dobrol
and then the PoTA as we know it today started
in twenty seventeen, so that was eight years ago at
the time of this recording. But in the last two years,
you know, I just think this is something that's positive.
I think, Okay, there's too much content on YouTube about

(00:41):
Ham Radio in a good way. In a good way
because back when I started, there wasn't much out there.
There was two or three channels and that was about it.
Today you don't have time to watch everything that's out there.
I don't have time to watch every video from every
person or every live streamer.

Speaker 5 (00:54):
And something like that.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
So the more and more content we put on YouTube
about Ham Radio, the more people are exposed to it,
and the bigger the hobby grows. People say that, you know,
radio is dead, et cetera, et cetera. If you look
at the numbers of people getting licensed, it has increasingly
grown every year, except for a couple of small dips.

Speaker 6 (01:15):
It was.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
It had a huge spike in twenty twenty, and then
it had a small dip in twenty twenty one because
everybody got in twenty twenty, and then since then it's
kind of gone back up again. So just the number
of people getting exposed to it and the amount of
content that's out there, and the amount of teaching that's
out there, the amount of training that's out there, I
see that as a very positive thing, and I think
it's going to keep going that way.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
Oh thank you, Jason, look for the hand of.

Speaker 6 (01:36):
Thanks, Frank.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
These are always fun questions, especially the ones I got
to think about.

Speaker 5 (01:40):
Paul her Pam, Paul k five vop.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
I'm keeping it.

Speaker 5 (01:46):
Most positive change would be from what I've noticed, I
just see the community growing as a community just like this.
It's just growing bigger and bigger, and it's come this
community of this camaraderie of people coming together just hanging
out with each other doing some radio.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
That's it.

Speaker 5 (02:08):
I just love it. It's just everything I see is a positive,
a positive direction. The youth education program and all these
it's all positive. But I like the community camaraderie. It
just seems to be getting bigger and bigger and growing.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
Awesome. Thank you, Paul.

Speaker 7 (02:23):
My name is Bill K zero WHW and my channel
is HAM Radio Tectonics, And in the last couple of years,
at least for me, the most positive thing I'm saying
is everyone getting to know each other. The communication that's
happening by YouTube and other places. People coming out to
these meet and greets and these ham pasts and getting

(02:44):
to know each other. That's what I see as a
positive thing. Awesome.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
Well, thank you very much.

Speaker 8 (02:50):
Bill.

Speaker 9 (02:50):
Here, you're welcome.

Speaker 10 (02:51):
This was going on.

Speaker 9 (02:51):
Josh k I six naz Tank has asked me what
is the most positive change I've seen in amateur radio
in the last two years. So that's a lot of
positive changes, a lot of positive changes.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
I got people how to what is this is a.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
Camera?

Speaker 9 (03:10):
So I just came back. By the way, there's a
lot of really good ones. But I just came back
from deaf Con in Las Vegas, and deaf Con is
a place where many different hacker cultures come together. One
of them, though, is that Amateur Radio Village. They had
multiple hundreds of people that they licensed over the course
of a weekend. They had a competition on building antennas

(03:31):
out of spare junks like cans, other metallic trash. They
also had SSTV going throughout the show, so people were
taking pictures and sharing it. But then adjacent to that
and kind of connected to it was the RF Village,
and that's where they did things with Bluetooth and Wi Fi,
mestastic RFIDs, all that stuff, but they also had amateur

(03:53):
radio engaged with that for like bouncing APRS packets off
the ISS. Now, this entire demographic is is young, and
so the fact that we're seeing kind of this welcoming
acknowledgment of amateur radio in outside communities and ham radio
has been at Deafcon for a long time, but seeing
it in person was really really cool. So I think
it's been a really good change for the entirety of

(04:15):
our community and the outlook of this.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Do us one more.

Speaker 9 (04:18):
You said you had a lot of them online testing.
Online testing started before obviously it went back to COVID.
But you can see the impact of that now. People
are walking up to me at the show at Defcon
here that they did it online. It was a super
easy process, got them, you know, their license really quickly

(04:38):
and easily. That's been very helpful access to inexpensive SDRs
software defined radios that you can just go get off
of Amazon for a receiver like less than fifty bucks
and then SDR's full transmit SDRs like the Hermes Light
for four hundred and fifty something dollars. I think that'll
do basically everything you want to do on HF. It's fantastic.

(05:01):
It's what wonderful, wonderful things have been happening in amateur radio,
and I'm glad.

Speaker 11 (05:05):
To see it.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
Awesome. Well, thank you, Josh, Yeah, thank you. So jealous
of you. Going to deaf Con.

Speaker 9 (05:11):
Oh and I was hanging out with Brian Brushwood.

Speaker 4 (05:13):
I saw the jaw.

Speaker 9 (05:14):
I walked up to him and he you met Brian, right,
He's like, oh, so great you're here. Let's do a
video just that was it? Like, it's just on so yeah,
Brian Brushwood is a force of nature, a great guy.
Love the energy.

Speaker 12 (05:28):
So yep, thank you, Josh, the most positive thing, yep,
I have seen in Ham radio. Oh man, how many
people have said parks on the air.

Speaker 1 (05:39):
Well, that's like five years but yeah.

Speaker 12 (05:42):
But it's still going on strong.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
Yeah, So tell us about parks on the air. Then, Well,
it's whenever you go to a park.

Speaker 12 (05:48):
Yeah, you take an antenna, uh huh, you connect it
to a radio, okay, and then you get on fourteen
three hundred okay, and you call c Q. SEEQ there
right right at four teen three hundred three.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Hundred, because that's the best place to make me contact
the quickest.

Speaker 12 (06:04):
Fourteen three hundred is going to be where all the
PoTA hunters hang out.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
I agree, oh heartily. All I got awesome. And what's
your name, call sign and channel?

Speaker 12 (06:16):
I'm not really sure what my name is, but my
call sign is A zero Z. It's been a long day,
cooked a lot of a lot of shit today, right,
it's all gone, It's all gone. But anyway, Kyle he
zero z on YouTube.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
You could find me there. Thank you very much, thank you.

Speaker 13 (06:34):
I'm Mike in for FFF, and I'm Becky and for BKY.

Speaker 7 (06:38):
And we're the Ham Radio duo.

Speaker 13 (06:40):
Yes, we do CW all day long and parks on
the air and parks on the air.

Speaker 12 (06:46):
The answer to the question is parks on the air.

Speaker 5 (06:48):
I think we're a little bit biased because we love
parks on the air.

Speaker 14 (06:52):
But we've just.

Speaker 12 (06:53):
Been having a blast and we've been We've met lots
of friends and they've said the same thing.

Speaker 8 (06:56):
Yep.

Speaker 13 (06:57):
And I would say that goes along with that.

Speaker 15 (06:59):
See them and the younger generation getting into the hobby,
enjoying Morse Code, getting out there.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
And getting on the air.

Speaker 7 (07:06):
Absolutely you think so.

Speaker 15 (07:08):
This is PoTA Rose and her favorite thing about CW
is a lot.

Speaker 12 (07:12):
Of love it.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
I love it.

Speaker 16 (07:17):
Hell do everybody see here? KM nine g what is
the most beneficial change in Ham Radio in the past
couple of years. I gotta say, I gotta I gotta
say it's YouTube getting so much content, so much education,
so much evangelism, so much fun and happiness out on
the airwaves. It's got to be a positive thing.

Speaker 1 (07:36):
I agree.

Speaker 14 (07:37):
Thank you, Steve, thank you, Frank.

Speaker 9 (07:39):
Hey.

Speaker 11 (07:40):
I'm Tim Davis, November Whiskey nine Fox Trot with the
gray Man Poda YouTube channel and the Ham Radio Kids Table,
and I think the most positive thing I've seen in
Ham radio in the last couple of years is events
like this, not just the ham Fest, but the camaraderie,
the getting out, the coming together as a group, and
you know, encouraging people to to just get out there

(08:01):
and be part of the community. It's a fun community
and I think that is the best thing that we've
seen in the last couple of years.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
Thank you, jam Thank you.

Speaker 15 (08:13):
I am Chris also known as Pink quelo Quebec for
Charlie Romeo Yankee. I am the prettier half of Hiking
and Hammon here and I also am hiking with Pink
on YouTube yes, and at Pink Hikes on X the
Best Change, More Girls, more girls, more wilds on on CW,

(08:38):
on the airwaves, on YouTube hiking, I see all kinds
of new people and I love it.

Speaker 8 (08:45):
I'm lou K for h and h hiking and Hammond
is the channel. And I would say for this, whether
it's here at Hunt School, whether it's at all of this,
these hang out gather talk to everybody face. We're not
just bumping into each other's We're going down the aisles
at the Hamfast to tell like, Hi, what's up. We're

(09:06):
hanging out, learning from each other and spending time together
and the community is getting tighter and tighter that way.
I think it's good to have this meat space, the
eyeball QSOs that we don't ordinarily get to have, and
it's expanding every year.

Speaker 4 (09:19):
Thank you, I have all q soos.

Speaker 15 (09:21):
I'm gonna steal that. That's a good way.

Speaker 4 (09:23):
I love it.

Speaker 17 (09:26):
Jim WT one w FVP Labs Radio. I think the
most positive thing I've happened in is that manufacturers are
starting to finally put USBC in their radios, at least
for their batteries. If they would make the data cable
USBC instead of using kenwood cables from the nineteen eighties,
life would be grand. How about we now need to

(09:46):
see HDMI ports over the d absolutely HDMI ports on
the back of HF radios. DVII is is dead is
fried Chicken people. I mean that was like during the
Reagan administration, that.

Speaker 13 (09:58):
Was a thing.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
Yep. Well, thank you for coming on.

Speaker 17 (10:02):
And I have a good ham Best YouTube Frank, take
it easy, brother.

Speaker 3 (10:05):
Hi, my name's Mike K and MRD. I have a
YouTube channel called ham Radio Tube, and I think the
most positive change I've seen in amateur radio really just
in the last few years is the number of YouTube
channels that are out there about Ham radio and how

(10:30):
much everybody really wants to just help and kind of
Elmer the next generation. That's why I started my channel,
just to give back, and it's it's really cool to
see so many YouTube channels about Ham radio versus you know,
even when I was licensed in twenty sixteen. To now
is just incredible. So my name's Mike. That's my answer.

Speaker 1 (10:54):
Thank you, Mike.

Speaker 18 (10:55):
You bet Hey, guys, my name is Jason cam four
Ack channel.

Speaker 13 (10:58):
Name is the scene.

Speaker 18 (11:00):
So tanks asking about the most positive change I've seen
in recent years at Ham Radio, and I have got
to go with Parks on the Gear. I think that
it is absolutely fabulous and it has encouraged more operators
to get out of the shack, get out into the
field and learn to work portable and if anything comes
through your area like a tornado or a hurricane where

(11:21):
you need to do it, it's another day in the
park for you. So my answer is Parks on the Gear.

Speaker 1 (11:27):
Thank you. I'm going to comment a little bit on that.
I also think it's opened up.

Speaker 14 (11:31):
The world for a lot of amateur radio operators.

Speaker 18 (11:33):
Oh, a lot of.

Speaker 1 (11:34):
Operators are going out and planning trips to hit multiple
parks when there trips usually are dis evolve around family.

Speaker 18 (11:41):
Yeah, and too. If you live in an hoa, maybe
you can't put up Antonna's at home. That gives you
an opportunity to get out and put something up on
the air that you might not be able to do
at home. Agreed, Well, thank you, Jason, will have a
good half as absolutely see you guys.

Speaker 1 (11:56):
Thank you smart Jason Hen Radio adventor, Guys Tank Radio,
a Radiovna Guy Tank Radio and Radiovni Guy Tang Radio.
How are you doing today? I'm doing great? How are
you doing all right? I know it's early in the morning,
but I think we're both a waking up for that hopefully.
But I wanted to get with you to ask you
the ham question of the convention.

Speaker 14 (12:17):
You ready, I'm ready.

Speaker 1 (12:18):
What is the most positive change you've seen an amateur
rad in the last couple of years.

Speaker 14 (12:22):
The most positive change I've seen an amateur radio in
the last year is the continued growth of the youth
that's getting exponentially large. I'm constantly tutoring new youth now
in parks on the air, and it's it just means
so much to me to work with the future of
Ham radio. Just last night we had a big group

(12:43):
activation and we had two youths come in and the
first thing when we started, I pulled one of them
up and they ran the mike and I made the
other one come up. And the youth is the future
of Ham radio, and that is that's the biggest positive change,
is the growth of the youth. So keep it up
whatever you guys are doing to get the youth in there.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
Awesome man, you need to join the ham Fist.

Speaker 14 (13:04):
I'm enjoying the hand fest. I'm having a great time.

Speaker 1 (13:05):
I look for you old day yesterday and you were gone.
I sat in your chair, I dominated your chair.

Speaker 14 (13:11):
I was here like this place is not extremely huge,
but there were several people I was looking for in
here and would never find them.

Speaker 1 (13:21):
I keep saying this is the easiest handfest to find
your favorite YouTuber, and I still think it is, especially
because we have a form that we're all going to
be tomorrow. Today there has been a lot of whiskey man.

Speaker 14 (13:33):
That's right, that's right, ten ten to twelve today YouTube
perform this is coming out twelve to one. Total planning
with this guy ooh ooh.

Speaker 1 (13:43):
Well, thank you very much, man, and have a good
hand fest.

Speaker 14 (13:45):
Thanks a lot, Frank. Hi.

Speaker 4 (13:48):
I am John Crook at nine UPC. What am I
doing this this channel here? I have my own channel
now called Communications and Conversations changed from cigars. But the
question is what is the most positive change in amateur radio.
I'd have to say the most positive change would be
is everybody's now getting back together. We're out of COVID

(14:12):
now and people are getting back together and actually talking
and communicating. So I really kind of like that there
then instead of us always being online and communicating online
and all that jazz, so getting back to that eyeball Q.

Speaker 5 (14:23):
So.

Speaker 4 (14:24):
I mean, there's so many people here I haven't seen
in years because now they're finally coming back. So I
think that's gonna be the most positive change.

Speaker 1 (14:30):
Awesome, awesome, And I'm gonna get you on one of
my cigar socials.

Speaker 4 (14:35):
I promise I will.

Speaker 1 (14:36):
I emailed you.

Speaker 15 (14:37):
I know, I know.

Speaker 4 (14:38):
I was so busy, it's you know, coming down here.
I got to drive all the way from up north.

Speaker 1 (14:42):
There a a hey, but thank you for coming on.
I appreciate it.

Speaker 10 (14:47):
Thanks name call sign and go Mike November eight, Yankee, Oscar,
how you doing. The best thing I've seen in the
hobby over the past couple of years would probably be
a lot more people interested in doing CW because it's
not a requirement to get a life anymore. They just
want to see what they can do with low power
or just get on a different mode. So I think
that's the best thing of the hobby right now.

Speaker 1 (15:07):
Awesome, Well, thank you very much, past the mic. The
pretty lady.

Speaker 17 (15:10):
Hello, I'm Jess W five a c Y.

Speaker 9 (15:13):
The most positive thing I think is I see a
lot more like young people.

Speaker 15 (15:18):
Getting into it, especially in the last few years or so.
It's not just all old men anymore.

Speaker 9 (15:22):
So there you go.

Speaker 1 (15:24):
Or yeah, there's a bunch of more ladies in it
hobby too.

Speaker 12 (15:28):
Yes, well, which is great, great for the hobby.

Speaker 13 (15:32):
Hey afternoon, Frank. Name is Dave Alpha Charlie three Alpha Victor,
And I think the most positive thing in the last
few years that have come along to HAN radio is
actually the YouTubers like yourself, because it's brought lots of
new ideas, inspiration. It makes you feel part of a

(15:53):
family without having to be in the family, so and
you can do it at your left and there's lots
and lots of really good information. Love it.

Speaker 1 (16:04):
Well, thank you very much.

Speaker 9 (16:06):
Hi.

Speaker 6 (16:06):
I'm Ron W four or r H and my uh
my YouTube name is air Hammer and uh, let's see
probably you know. Actually, I'd say the biggest change goes
back just a little bit more than a couple of years,
and that's the introduction of the digital communication modes such
as FT eight, which I think a lot of hands

(16:27):
right now enjoy and have a good time with. So
it's it's it's changed the whole whole scope of the
of the program. Couple that with PODA and that's that's it.
It's big time awesome. Well, thank you very much, Ron,
thank you, thank you.
