Corre, senza saperlo, la sua ultima gara, il 10 aprile 1950, in Sicilia.
Le cure non sortiscono più alcun effetto, decide di ritornare a morire a casa sua, a Mantova.
Si spegne l’11 agosto 1953. I suoi funerali, partecipatissimi, si svolgono due giorni dopo.
La sua leggenda è ancora viva.
