Tytułowy „dogmat” wyprowadził nas ku historii rodzenia się autorytetu Kościoła, najpierw jako rozstrzygającego dylematy interpretacji Pisma Świętego, a potem także jako autorytetu czuwającego nad rozwojem doktryny. Przyglądamy się pierwszym synodom, soborowi nicejskiemu, Leonowi Wielkiemu. To właśnie Leon Wieki umocnił rolę Rzymu jako autorytetu doktrynalnego. Potem pokazujemy znacznie dla rozwoju świadomości doktrynalnej Kościoła sporu o koncyliaryzm i soboru trydenckiego oraz nowożytnemu rozwojowi dogmatycznej świadomości Kościoła i współczesnemu funkcjonowaniu magisterium Kościoła.
