This is cring Shop Briggs and VC. We want to touchdown. We're not
trying to go for three. Andit's best if you get up out the
street because the bulls out the planningand he's about the stampede. Hey everyone,
and welcome to the Texas. ThisFan Battle podcast brock to you by
(00:23):
the band Battle Sports Network. I'myour host today. Matthew Briggins is always
and I am joined with a specialguest. But before I introduced him,
let me introduce you my amazing Triominus one. I got my little big
brother, mister Brown Chewy Bear himselfBT. What's going on? But what's
going on? What's going on?What's going on? And guys, if
(00:45):
you listen to ESPN, especially backtoday with the indie Clue in the trenches,
you know this guy very funny dude. We got mister bay Hope.
I don't mess up your last names. Yeah, now that's good. That's
not bad. It's not bad. When I was filling in last week on
ESPN with Josh Beard, they hadSpencer Tillman. Uh like you you know
(01:06):
when you have rejoins when you comeback to be like now back to the
show with Josh Beard and Harry Lemonsack. I was like, okay, they
did that on purpose, but I'vehad something that bad before, So I
was like, man, I'm gonnamurder the juice name. But you know
you just call me Barry. Thatworks. Why are you doing to day?
Baby? I'm good, man,I'm good. You know. It's
it's football season is here with Weekthree of college football coming up, Week
(01:30):
two of the NFL astros are youknow being the A's tonight? So yeah,
can't never better? Man. Sportsare popping, all right, Well
let's get into let's jump in fromNFL news. Well, as you can
(01:53):
tell by the picture, Aaron Rodgersout for the season with a torn achilles.
Hey, you're the gas man,I'll let you kick it off.
What's your thoughsome did you see thevideo of it? Did you see it
explode? I mean I didn't seehis achilles explode? Did it? Did
it explode? That's gross? Yeah, they have like a close up video
(02:15):
where you gonna see it and itjust popped. Oh god, no,
I didn't see that, and thankfullyso that's I got a weak stomach.
I'm a willis when it comes tothat stuff. I don't need to see
it. But you know what itfirst and foremost, my first thought right
off the rip when I was watchingthat was my God, I feel so
(02:36):
bad for the Jets fan base andthe organization. And I'm not even like
a Jets fan or I don't evenreally care. I think that's the only
word they can spell is Jets,Jets, That's all they do. But
I just was like, this issuch a snake bit organization. Like,
I just that was such a well, my second thought was, well,
what a Browns thing to happen tothe Jets. But just felt bad for
(02:58):
the guys man and that fan base, and you know, all this hype
and Hooplan four plays, that's whatthe NFL got out of that. That
sucks. Well did you see that? That guy kind of he kind of
predicted it. He on Twitter hesaid, it's running in here with three
point five inches of rain on theturb watch Aaron Rodgers blow his achilles and
(03:19):
in no way. Yeah, Now, you know what's crazy. As though
I've seen Kessie, I'm super skepticalof any of that stuff on the interwebs.
I'm like, mm, I don'tbelieve any of that stuff, right,
Because there was one dude who youremember I don't know, maybe two
years ago, three years ago ago, former astro who was it dude went
to San Diego and throw a nohitter and some guy called it on Twitter.
(03:44):
He was like, oh I calledit. I said today he was
gonna throw a no hitter. Whathe was doing, though, is every
day he would tweet out that whoeverwas the starting pitcher for the Padres was
gonna throw a no hitter, andthen when as soon as he give up
a hit, he'd delete the tweetand no one would know or see it.
So when he finally got it right, they went viral. Is like,
I'm the best. No, Idon't believe that, so I'm gonna
I would have to dig around andget some more proof before I believe this
(04:06):
cat nailed that. Joe Muscro,Yes, that was Joe Muscrow. Well
done, Googles. I loved him. I hate that he left me.
Yeah yeah, yeah, well thoughtwell obviously. I feel for the Jets
fans best. I feel bad forAaron Rodgers. I feel bad for the
(04:27):
Jets organization. They've invested a lotin Aaron Rodgers. Everyone who follows the
show knows that I've been talking upabout them, thinking that they are a
Super Bowl contending team and now wedon't know what's going on with them.
I know some people think they're gonnastick with Zach, but I don't think
so. I think the interesting story, after you get away from what happened,
which is horrible, is that whatare they going to do with the
(04:49):
quarterback position? You know. Ihave a little bit of a hot take
that I think that the Titans arereally looking to get rid of Channehill affort
is horrendous performance of three receptions,no touchdowns, just horrible. But the
thing is, the dude has performedin the past. He's a veteran.
I still think he's better than ZachWilson, and potentially the Titans could save
(05:13):
twenty seven million dollars of the tradeto the Jets, and the Jets could
have of that that potentially could atleast get him in the playoffs, which
is something I don't know Zach Wilsonnecessarily can do. I do think they're
exploring options. I think that tenHell's an option. I think that I
think Davis Mills is even an option. Frankly, because Zach Wilson is pretty
(05:33):
much one of you know, bottomof the barrel at this point, and
they've got you don't think Davis Millsis bottom of the barrel, Sorry,
I think Davis Mills is the bottomof barreable. But I think he's here,
and I think Zach Wilson opposite whenyou get what I'm saying, because
it's here's here's Davis Mills and here'sZach Wilson. You know, like he's
(05:54):
just barely better. And I thinkthat Zach Wilson knows that kind of and
he knows that he he wasn't expectingto play this year. He had and
now he was going to sit downand listen and learn from Aaron Rodgers.
And he's not putting a bad positionnow because he's put a position where they
were going to win a super Bowl, at least try to win a Super
(06:14):
Bowl this year. And now they'regoing to have to try to rely on
Zach Wilson, who they took off, who the team rallied against. They
had shirts made of another quarterback whilehe was a starting quarterback. He does
not own that franchise. There's noway that they can keep him out there
for the entire season. Great ateacher, can you call me? I
(06:35):
have a question, go ahead, you know what. No, here's the
thing, And look, I appreciatethe logic. I do, I do,
but there's not one name that youcan throw out there that gives this
Jets team a realistic chance of makinga deep playoff run. I mean,
they almost made the playoffs with ZachWilson last year, right, and everybody
(06:58):
said, well, they're a quarterbackaway. And what happened was they bring
in Aaron Rodgers. They revamped theentire offense, They redesign the entire offense.
They they basically cater the entire offenseto Aaron Rodgers, who lasts four
plays, So going out and gettinganother quarterback randomly. At least Zach Wilson
has been in the room and sawthe revamped offense built from scratch, Right,
(07:20):
does he have the skill set tolead them to you know, an
AFC title game? Probably not.But not a single name you could throw
out there save for Tom Brady doesat this point, I look, I
pulled up a list. Jamis Winston, Davis Mills was on the list.
I mean, Carson Wentz. Nothanks to any of those names that there's
(07:41):
a reason none of them have astarting job. But what would you do.
Would you rather just start Zach andhave no chance or hassle that Carson
Wentz. You don't have a chancewith Carson Wentz. He's like, in
my opinion, I mean, youknow, some people get high on some
of these cats. I think Isaw Trey Lancer's name batting around for a
second, like, none of thesecats are that good. Ryan Tannehill,
I think is awful. I thinkhe's been awful for a long time.
(08:03):
And I'm an aggy fan. He'sjust an awful NFL quarterback. I don't
think he gives them any better ofa chance to actually make a run At
this point, I think you seewhat Zach Wilson can do, because I
mean, let's be real, AaronRodgers was gonna play a year or two
right and then call it quiz Sohe was his job was to let's see
(08:24):
if we can groom Zach Wilson andget him ready to take over. Well,
and she's gonna have to deal withthat for a year at least.
I mean, they are paying guyslike Quinnon Williams and there's like four big
defensive players up there playing. Theycan't just waste another year. They wasted
last year with them they want. You want them to waste this year without
even a glimmer of hope of tryingto make a deep playoff run, because
(08:48):
at least trying to get these dudesin the mode of trying to winch Super
Bowl. They probably can't with anotherquarterback, but they probably can at least
get to the playoffs and win agame with a game manager. Now,
listen, I've been saying Ryan Channehillas a quarterback for god knows how long.
Both of these guys know how muchI think that he sucks, But
I'm saying that he can be agame manager. You don't ask him to
(09:09):
do a hell of a lot. They beat the Bills, obviously, the
Bills mostly beat themselves, but theybeat the Bills because Zach Wilson didn't throw
a lot. They didn't ask himto throw a lot. He only made
a few a few passes that matter. You can ask Tannehill to do that
and he and he can do thata lot better than Zach Wilson. And
the reason why I'm saying this,Listen, i want Tennessee to fail.
(09:31):
But if I'm Tennessee, I'm like, let me save twenty seventy million dollars
and get this mofo out of hereat the same time and try to put
in either Malik or Levis who theydrafted, and see if these guys.
One of these guys can be theirquarterback. I mean, we've seen crazier
things happened in the NFL, Right, girls, they about tirely joints.
(09:52):
Appreciate it. Brother, what tells? What's your thoughts on his whole Aaron
Rodgers debacle? I mean, damn, I went to the restaurant, I
came back and he was he wasout the game. I'm like, damn,
that was quick. But yeah, like a Tyson fight. Yeah.
Well, what basically I got aquestion, is this year's just defense as
(10:15):
good as the resh Ryan's defense whenthey had Mark Sanchez and had a deep
playoff run. I think so,I mean, didn't just see what they
did the Bills? I mean well, I mean yeah, I mean I
get that Josh Allen's a gun slinger, but still you they put themselves in
the position to make a lot ofplays. Okay, quick single Jordan White
had made two hundred and fifty thousanddollars off of Josh Allen. I just
(10:39):
hed he made a quarter million dollars, Allen, I can make this Okay,
Well, all right, so they'rebetter or just as good, then
they shouldn't waste this year. Theyshould trying to go out and find a
quarterback that could get him there.I like the Ryan Tannehill idea. Or
hell, go back and get MikeWhite. He's a backup in Miami.
Gonna get Mike White. He playedgood last year. We're going for them.
(11:01):
Get him. Anything's better than ZachWilson at this point. I mean,
I know the Rams won on Sunday, but I mean, do you
really think the Rams are are aplayoff continue team? You always go get
Matt Stafford available now, yeah,so I mean you never know. I
(11:24):
mean, of all those names,if that were the case and they could
get Matt Stafford, to me,that would make the most sense at this
point versus any of these retread names, because look, we see it over
and over when it comes to quarterbacksand head coaches. You can see these
names just kind of regurgitated and theyget retreaded, and there's a reason that
teams give up on them. There'sa reason that teams don't want to mess
(11:46):
with that. That the that theTitans are done with Ryan Tannehill. There's
a reason that the Niners were donewith Trey Lance. If you can't succeed
in in that offense, what doesthat say for you? But yet he
was a name I saw floated about. I'm just like, I don't know,
man, if you could grab youknow somebody that has that experience,
a guy who went to the SuperBowl less than three years ago, that
(12:07):
makes sense. Yeah, I justwant to say, obviously, we spend
a lot of time on this topicson almost by too much more. I
just want to say what I'm sayingwhen I say go to get a Vine
Taylor or someone is you're expecting aGeno Smith type of performance. Someone that
has been hasn't performed well for yearsin a row. But you know,
giving a new lease on life, the new situation can basically change a lot
(12:28):
of things, you know, AndI think you know, look at golf,
like no one thought that gold. That's a great point. So you
know, you got those situations withGeno Smith and golf where you give them
just a little bit of a differentsituation and they seem like a whole totally
new guy. And they think theJets what have they got to lose At
this point, They've invested so muchinto this season. What do they have
(12:48):
got to lose? I'm trying tothrow it all the chips and see out
far they can get with another quarterback. I CONDIDTIONE do it well. Before
we moved to the next subject,Will Quick Barry does he come back or
has he done his career? AaronRodgers, Yeah, I think he comes
back. There's I don't think.Yeah. I don't think a guy like
(13:09):
Aaron Rodgers goes out four plays intoleaving the team that he played entire his
entire career with UH and and buildingup expectations of a super Bowl in New
York. To me, that's justI would be stunned if a guy like
that, with that competitive nature UHcalled it quits. I mean, I
know he's gonna be a year older, but he also won't have a year
(13:30):
of NFL wear and tear on hisbody because he won't be doing anything.
So, yeah, he's a yearolder. I think he comes back and
it might not go great, andit might not. He may never be
the same and he probably won'ted hisage. I think he gives it another
goal. I really do, andI you know, I just I would
be stunned if a guy of thatelk or to just call it quits now.
(13:52):
All right, Well to the nextsubject. Kind of context is related.
T J. Watt surpasses his brotheras the second fastest player to rease
eighty sex Bay, what do youthink is a young beat his brother by
it? When it said all saidand done, I mean, it's look
at it. It's trending in thatdirection already, right, He's just it's
(14:13):
unbelievable. I don't have a crystalball, but if he's already passed him
as the second fastest player to reacheighty you know, I'm a I'm a
huge Mike Tomlin stand and I lovewhat that dude does year in and year
out with his defenses and with histeams. Uh. And as long as
they keep putting t. J.Watt in position to be successful, which
he will because that's the kind ofcoach that he is, you gotta feel
(14:35):
like he's he's got a really goodshot at it. Yeah, I'm calling
the Watt family and seem what theyput in there? You know, like,
dude, how do you how doyou crazy? These boys? Christall?
What about you? Oh? Yeah, Yeah, he's he's definitely gonna
pass his brother. I don't thinkhe's going to be as injured as much
as JJ was in his career.I didn't really when when he's got picked
(14:58):
by Pittsburgh, I didn't think hewas going to be this good. I
thought it was gonna take some time. But this guy came out, came
out the gate rolling. I meanwhat he had three and a half sacks
Sunday. I mean, they gotthe ass will, but he had a
great game. I'm just I'm justthinking about what's he gonna do the CJ
when we played them in a coupleof weeks, Because that's that's really real
scary right there. Man. Buthey man, it's a hell of a
(15:18):
player. Man, Like you said, what do they what do they did
to those guys? And they wasbabies? Man, I'm sorry. What
was it? Was it breast? Was it was it breast milk? Or
it was say that what's going on? Yeah? From from the gate,
I'm telling you, bet, Iend it with you. I agree with
his mama's milk, but I'm gonnasay that I also agree that he's gonna
(15:39):
beat his brother. Because of injuriesj J and Watt said, one of
the reasons why he was injured somuch is because he pushed himself working out
and he wanted to hit those numbers. And he said, at the end
of the day, you know,he he hit the numbers in terms of
reps and wait, and but hewasn't on the field, so he didn't
do anybody any good. And Ithink that he taught that lesson to his
(16:00):
brothers, and so I think thatTJ. Watt will won't be as injured
as JJ, and that's why hewill surpassed his brother. Okay, well,
and I think a lot too.JJ took this team on his back,
like I mean that blow out againstKansas City, the thirty to zero
(16:22):
in the first half. We kepthim the thirteen points and then JJ went
out with the back injury, andthat's when hell broke loose. So I
think the Texans put too much pressureon him and starting to see him like
the stears he's gonna do the samething the t J. I mean,
Kenmy Pickett's not not helping his cause, but it's still earlier. So you
(16:42):
know, before we that dub himthe next uh brock Oswallder, you know,
we'll give him a couple of games. Well, guys, let's get
to why we are here. Talksome texts. This is kring saws V.
We want to touchdown. We're nottrying to go for three. And
it's best if you get about thestreet because the bulls out the playing about
(17:04):
Stampede. Well, guys, youhave heard what me BT and Corins wll
I had to say about this gameSunday on a recap. So babe,
let's get your what was your takeawayfrom this game Sunday against the Ravens.
Well, okay, it wasn't great. You know. The outcome wasn't great.
(17:29):
There was a ton of mistakes bya young team. But I'm not
gonna sit here like I would normallydo because I get in trouble a lot
with with Houston fans because I thinka lot of people don't understand I am
a Texans fan. I'm a Houstonfan. I'm a Houston native born and
raised. But also my job asa as a sports journalist and sports media
guys to be objective. This isstill a bad football team. But for
(17:52):
the first time in years, threefour years, I didn't hate myself as
a fan and hate what I sawon Sunday. I have hated every game
I've watched for years. I didn'thate this game. It wasn't great,
it wasn't pretty, but I waslike, Okay, there could be hope
(18:14):
here. There could be hope there. And you figured. I was a
little nervous because you know, CJ. Stroud running for his life the entire
game. I was having flashbacks.I was like, oh, oh goodness,
c J. Stroud is the blackDavid Carr right now. That's that's
all this is. He's just runningaround, falling down like a fainting goat.
It's it's scary because this offensive lineis so bad. But if that
(18:37):
offensive line gets back and they gethealthy again, uh and and you know,
they get him one more weapon.I think at wide out, you've
you got to feel pretty good aboutthis. It's one day. I mean,
it's one game, one week.But I didn't hate what I saw,
and I think that's a huge stepforward for a fan base that has
been pretty beleaguered for a long time. Okay, so you see promise in
(18:59):
a young team. Yeah, there'sthere's a lot of spots. Look,
this is a team that was devoidof talent pretty much everywhere except left tackle
and safety. I mean there wasthere was nothing anywhere else on this team
for a while. Then Da DamianPierce showed up. Uh, you know,
Petrie has really showed out. You'vegone out and got will Anderson,
you get who got a sack, which was great. So and you're starting
(19:21):
to see other guys kind of stepup too. You got some veteran presence
as well. Things are looking good, but it's just it's a long way
to go to being getting back toa respectable team again. Okay, and
you know you mentioned getting some extrahelp and you know a couple moves,
well, they made a move ofrestructuring Jerry Hughes' contract to help with the
(19:45):
cat space. Do you see amove happening or it's a something that that
needed to be I mean, hehad a pretty decent game. I mean,
I know it was no sacked, but he was there. Yeah,
you know what I mean. Anytimeyou do a move like that, you've
got you it's either just to giveyou some room just in case, or
(20:07):
you've got an idea or an eyeon somebody that you want to bring in
to shore up something or fill ina hole, or maybe you know you're
gonna lose the guy. I mean, I saw the injury report today and
I was like, do they evenhave this many people on the roster?
These are like was there like Ifeel like some of these names were cheerleaders?
Like, I was like, whatwhat's going on here? Was that
a grounds crew listed on IR?It's just it's a mash unit after one
(20:30):
week, and that's a little upsetting. That's a little scary. So I'm
sure they did that because when wheny'all send me the show notes for IR,
there's well one, two, three, four, five, six,
seven, eight or nine ten, there's like eleven dudes on the IR.
I had to even go look itup. You can only bring back eight
players max from the IR in aseason, so some of these cats ain't
(20:52):
coming back, so you better makesome room and get some new guys signed
and get some fresh bodies in here. Well, I'm glad you brought it
up. The injuries. What doyou think is the cause? Is Demiko
practicing too hard? Is it thefield? What do you think all these
injuries are coming from? I mean, I know the twenty seventeen we set
(21:15):
the record for most players on IR, but it does seems like it's it's
turning in that way, right man, that the list, Oh my god,
if you put yeah, you seethe scroll right there, that looks
like that. The scroll looks likesomebody that like y'all are having a charity
donation thing going, and you've gotyou're raising all kinds of money. It's
just that it's a good thing. You don't have to pay by the letter
(21:38):
for the scroll. Y'all be brokebecause that is a lot of names,
you know, Yeah, year, that's exactly exactly. Like, Man,
all these dudes play I R.Is that their position? No, that's
not that's a lot. I don'tknow what it is, you know,
is it is it practicing too hard? Is a little bit of gamesmanship?
(22:00):
Is it a little bit of youknow, let's see, we got some
dudes that are kind of banged upand we don't really we're not really feeling
them. Let's throw them on ther R. I don't know. I
wouldn't put anything like that pack pastNick Cassario. But that's a dangerous game
to play because you start doing thatand players leave and you get a mic
fires effect going. But I don'tknow. Something in the water, the
(22:22):
heat, the I don't know.Maybe it's the drought. They're they're all,
they're all all their muscles are driedout. I have no idea.
That's crazy. Right, go ahead, b TR, I know you all
day. We're waiting to say something. Sorry. Yeah, I mean I
do want to talk some stuff onthe Ravens game too, but let me
just save entries there with some murmursand I kind of I kind of you
(22:42):
know, tub it away in myhead, like, you know, talking
to a few people here and therethat there were some murmurs about how hard
that we were working these guys inpractice, and you know, I talked
to a few people here and therethat they let me know a few things
and that was kind of concerning. But I really didn't think anything of it,
because you know, Demiko Jes started, so, you know, hearing
(23:04):
anything negative about Demiko, I wasbasically throwing it away. The reason why
that started because Netchi, right likeNetchi came back and all of a sudden
he had a hamstring injury. Andthen you had quite a few players.
I don't even actually remember all theplayers that got hurt in the preseason,
but it was like six dudes, and it was week after week after week
(23:25):
after week. Now, I'm notnegative on Demiko, and I don't think
necessary this is just him playing playerstoo hard. But I think it's also
the fact that players aren't used tohaving this type of effort in camp,
and I think that this won't necessarilybe the case next year, but I
think that there has to be somethingdone in order for them to actually get
(23:47):
conditioned before OTAs I think that heis. I think the whole team has
to put an emphasis on year roundconditioning as opposed to just getting started in
March. You know. I thinkthat is going to be something moving forward
that I think that could be putinto contracts. I don't know how that
actually works, but like, youknow, having some sort of off season
incentive to get conditioned before you're readyto go into March, so you don't
(24:11):
just start like this and then geta hamstring in trade. Also, just
from a medical perspective, you know, it's been over one hundred degrees,
you know, and I haven't beenpracticing in the bubble. Mostly they did
today, but most of the timethey haven't been. And dehydration is a
cause for HIMSI it's not just stretchingobviously, stretching is important, but you
(24:33):
need a lot of hydration. AndI do think that perhaps they need to
spend a little more time in thebubble, though I know they don't because
it's not large enough to have allthe teams they're simultaneously, meaning ones,
twos, threes, and special teams, so maybe they rotate it. But
I think they need to figure thatpart out because I think part of it's
just it's hot out there and youcan't expect dudes in one hundred degrees and
if the real field has been onehundred and ten in some cases, out
(24:56):
there and play as hard as Domicowants them to play in that hea and
then and then go out go outthere on a regular season game and then
play hard again. I think Ithink it's a little I think they got
to figure that because a little toomuch literally just for these many injuries,
you cannot say just a coincidence. There's something else there that has to be
investigated. And obviously the season isthe season what it is right now.
(25:17):
But next year, I think theygot to focus on conditioning that has to
start prior to March, and uh, you know a lot of players are
are you know, upset about thefield conditions, about the turf. That
could be you know, a costtoo, because going from grass to practice
the turf the grass, I mean, it's not a very uh safe wear
(25:41):
and tear on their body. Sovich, I know you have something to
say about the ravers. What youuh to say it before I could get
off. Okay, So Barry,I agree with you that the old line
is not good. But here's whatI'll say is that it's not It wasn't
as bad as also as I'm thinking. Listen, I watched the game.
We all did, obviously, andso you can tell what was going on.
(26:03):
And one of the things I noticed, yes, on the right side
was worse than the left. Butthe other thing here is I think,
you know, Matt always says schemingfixes everything, and I'm going to steal
this away from a movie because ofthis situation. He's right because what happened
here is we had free rushers. So on six dropbacks, five of them
had free rushers. If we hadtwo tight ends and you had inline blocking,
(26:26):
you actually would have those those rushersbe stopped. But what happened is
even though all the linemen were blockingtheir dudes, they got a free rusher
because of the blitz, and sothe only way you can stop that really
is with a tight end and youput and so if you have a tight
end, use a two tight endsystem there you can actually block those rushers
and then you can now now youcan focus and actually get a pass off
(26:49):
on the blitz instem just getting sackedall the time. So you know,
again, Matt, you're right thatlike scheming does fix everything, in this
case, it would have fixed theissues with the blitz. Five out of
six of blitz. What the helldo you want CJ to do? The
old line actually did their job forthe most part on their blocks, But
what are you gonna do with thefree rusher? He's after, he's coming.
The only thing CJ can do isrun for his life. That's number
(27:11):
one. Number two, Tank Dellwas not used nearly as much as anyone
thought that he should be. Hewas taken in the third round, and
so I think that we take dothat early. You need to play them,
especially with the lack of talent weat. We really only have in
my opinion, two explosive players, that's Damien Pierson Tank Dell, and we
used both of them very little.Damian Pierce only got eleven cares for thirty
(27:34):
eight yards. Tank Dell only gottwo catches if I remember correctly, right,
So I think they have to useTank Dell. I think that Noah
Brown got way too much work andhe was not good at run blocking.
Who's dropping passes. You don't useNoah Brown on screens. He's not the
explosive guy used Tank Dell. Now, Noah Brown. Obviously I didn't want
anyone to get hurt, but Idid say that I wanted Tank Dell to
(27:56):
take those screen passes, and Ithink that's gonna happen against the Culture year.
Schultz was only targeted four times. Now, of course he is limited
right now, so that's another injuryconcern. But he was only talking at
four times. We talked about thishow for how long? Saying that Schultz
should be one of the most targeted, Uh, not just tight ends,
but from a receiving perspective, rightfour times, like especially on the blitchest
(28:19):
of I don't understand that that hasthat has to be affixed. Now,
as far as the one defense,we only led one hundred and ten yards,
there were there were games where welet up three hundred yards. That's
a significant improvement. We were rateat twenty third in the league this week
one in terms of rush defense.Hell yeah, by the way, we
were ranked twenty one on offense offensiveline, so you know, we weren't
(28:41):
like bottom we were. We werepretty close to you know, basically bottom
ten, but much better than peopleexpected with the five injuries that we had
on the old line. Frankly, way better than we expected. One of
the things I think that needs tobe fixed on, actually, Jay,
who's a commenter here, Jay Williams, who's so the modern Texan. Follow
him if you have it. Hedoes good film reviews. And one of
(29:03):
the things that I asked him,I said, why was there why was
our goal line stands so poor?Because we failed that the goal line stands
right, Stingly gave stingly gave upa touchdown. Christian Harris got run over
by Hill. That's something that wehave that we have to perfect as well.
Uh C J overall performed well.He was at eight. He passed
(29:26):
more than anyone else in the division. He beat twevel Lads by yard from
from a passing perspective at two hundredforty two yards. But what he has
to do is he has to getthe ball in the hands of playmakers,
and that means tink Dell and Don'tand don't Chults for the for the blitzes.
But he has to get his hands. He got to get the ball
with the tank Han's hands. Hehas to and he's and you probably have
(29:48):
to involve Damon Pierce Moore in thepassing game because Pierce can get yards after
contact. Mm hmm, anything anythingrebuttal or anything to say. I think
the only thing when you you broughtup the Tankdale, which you'd like to
see Tankdale more involved. But yougot to remember too, this is a
rookie going up against you know, veteran corners with the Ravens, and a
(30:14):
lot of times he may not bewinning his matchup. I mean he was
targeted four times. But to seeRobert Woods kind of emerge and a guy
that a lot of people rode off, but he got ten targets, six
catches. I mean, these areguys though, that have been in this
league. You know, even withNico collins Is, he still has some
professional experience. So they're more oftenthan not, especially early, especially in
(30:36):
week one, those guys you're probablyfeel more comfortable with and they're winning their
matchups, and for me, aguy like Tank Dell that I'm using that
guy as a decoy. I'm usingthat guy to take the lid off the
defense. Run me some go rounds, run me some nine rounds, and
then that opens it up for Collinsand Woods across the middle, or you
know the other routes on the routetree that you can get them too,
So that's possible. I don't dofilm study, that's not my thing,
(31:00):
but I just feel like, maybeyou know, it's not necessarily that they
didn't want to get tanked. Dellinvolved, He's obviously part of the scheming
in the Reeds, but he justmay not have been winning his matchups.
I mean, one of the thingsthat we were talking about in our textis
chin is you give them some quickslants and you have the dude right there,
especially because of how much you wouldblitzen right like, they use some
(31:22):
quick slants and that's how use tankedout and then he's a yat guy,
So then you have the possibility afteryou give him that quick slant, to
take it home. But we didn'tdo that, and so we lost the
ability to have that explosive offense. So I don't. I mean, and
I think that he in that situationcould have won those matches. You look
at Zave Flowers, what did ZaveFlowers if they didn't use them as a
deep threat at all. He justused his athleticism to beat dudes. And
(31:45):
I think that's what tanked delt woulddo. Okay, uh Crens fault.
What's your take on the injuries andwhatnot? On those Russian touchdowns? Was
the defense even set? Do youguys remember what they even set when Right
even scored a touchdowns? I knowwhat you're talking about. Like, I'm
that I'm not one of them withthe Christian Harrish's got rolled over. They
(32:07):
were not ready, Like Harris wasn'tready because you saw he was right there
in the gap and then he movedover because he saw where Hell was and
he just trucked him over and soon that one, he definitely wasn't ready.
Yeah, that's something they need tothey need to work on. You
know, I want to tank andI want Appears to have more touches.
I want to take it Pears tohave more touches. But maybe it was
(32:28):
a good thing. Look all theinjuries we had, I mean, they'd
have more touches. They could havebeen an injury list this weekend. We
really would have been freaking out.So maybe it's good that they bring they
bringing them on slowly, you know, but you know, the injuries are
concerned. But Loans, it's numberseven. It's back there, cold Ridge.
I'm happy because I wanted him toget his the most reps out of
(32:50):
anybody this season. But the injuriesis gonna happen. It's the NFL.
The year you get the injury bug. It's this year, right, as
long as it's not the rookies oryou know somebody. Yeah, yeah,
I mean, just just hopefully, you know, Bobby learning from this as
well, because some of his playcalling was really the suspect of a lot
(33:15):
of actually lots play called him withsuspect. I hope he can learned from
this and he does better this week. You know, we got some homes
cooking, you know, because thatplay called him was really really crazy.
That nor Brown shit was retarded tome. Man, All right, well
let's move on to these, uh, the Texas versus the we mean that's
(33:39):
a deal, right, Well,we know we don't have you for very
much longer. Barry so we kindof trying to speed it up. What
is your take against the Colts andthe Texans? Uh? What what do
we need us to do to winthis game? YEA, Well, first
of all, I'm I'm excited aboutthe game because now it's week two.
(34:02):
Although you know, more injuries more, you know, tons of guys are
questionable. But it's not often youget to see two draft picks this high,
with Anthony Richardson and c J.Stroud going added in week two,
so that'd be kind of cool.Stroud, you know, he had his
moments, although they never entered thered zone last week. But Anthony richard
(34:28):
did look good, rushed for atouchdown, made a couple of mistakes as
a rookie quarterback, and that's gonnahappen. I don't even think CJ.
Stroud had a chance to make arookie mistake. Honestly, he was just
running for his life the entire time. But hopefully they cleaned some of that
up, they figure some of thatout, They know how to scheme better
now knowing what their deficiencies are atthe old line or whatever. But it's
(34:50):
I mean, you're talking about twoof the worst teams in football. Last
year, and everybody's got hope becauseit's only Week two, and I think
it's gonna be an ugly, boring, a low scoring game. But if
I could just walk away not feelingworse than I did last week or having
that ikey feeling like I did inseasons past, that's a win to me.
And and you know, look,we can get into all of the
(35:15):
who's winning their one on one matchupsand in Week two. Quite honestly,
to me, it doesn't matter.None of this. None of this matters.
None of the I mean, theplay calling matters, and that's the
stuff that that guys like us talkabout. All I really want to see
from the Houston Texans is a smallprogress, incremental progress, right like c
(35:36):
J. Stroud instead of taking asack, throwing the ball away on fourth
down, you know what I mean, Just just little bitty things. Maybe
you know, maybe maybe Stingley doesn'tget beat deep every single time, and
maybe maybe somebody in the secondary turnstheir head around to find the ball instead
of getting a questionable PI. Butno, unless you turn around and find
the ball, that's not a PI, and that hurt them too. So
little things like that is all Icare about seeing in week two against the
(35:59):
Colts, or like if when weconvert on third down, the offensive line
doesn't get called for a holding play, or maybe when it's fourth and short
you don't run a pass play, and when it's fourth and two then you
run the ball. That might begood too. I don't know. I
completely agree with well, Vegas guysgot the Colt snaker than one to win
(36:19):
this game. But what's your takeon it? I don't know if you
do predictions or not, but whatdo you You know what I usually I
have like a spreadsheet that I do. It's actually been pretty successful. I
started it back when I was onThe Usual Suspects with Joel Blank, my
OW co host on esp and NZAMfive, and I kind of did it
as a joke because I'm a nerdwhen it comes to numbers and stuff like
that. But I developed my ownformula. But I usually don't start using
(36:44):
spreads and lines until about week five. And the reason is just what I
mentioned earlier. You really don't knowwho these teams are. We don't know
what this offense is. We don'tknow what the Colts offense is. And
same thing on the on the defensiveside of the ball. So the one
though, probably makes sense. Idon't know if that's enough. I think
that the Colts might be maybe shouldbe favored by a little bit more.
(37:06):
But I think Vegas at least istelling you they respect the Texans defense,
and that's one of those little signs. That's all. That's good because last
year that number might have been four, four and a half. So the
it's it's weird. ESPN on theirmatchup predictor actually has the Texans as the
favorite with the chance fifty two percentchance of winning the game. Yet they're
(37:27):
a one point dog at home andtheir home opener. I would probably,
if I'm wagering, I'd probably takethe point. It's two bad teams.
Honestly, don't bet on this game. But you know, if you're asking
me, sure, why not giveme the point in the Texans? That's
cool? All right? Well whatdo you what do you got? How
would we win this game? Yeah? I mean so, first of all,
(37:51):
I do think that we will winthis game. I obviously didn't say
that last week because I thought thatwith the injuries and obviously having a degree
it was our defense, that itwas going to be a tough matchup.
But I do think that we winthis game. And one of the reasons
why is because I think we Ithink there's already tendencies being shown by Aar.
We're gonna actually gonna have an episodewith a horse You Mob where I'm
(38:15):
actually going to show actual charts onthis. We don't don't have them today,
but we'll show them on Horsehoe Mob. So follow us on Twitter and
on YouTube and all that stuff soyou can find out when that happens.
What you'll notice is that Aar throwsevery single almost every single completed pass that
he threw was to the right.Only like one or two passes was to
(38:35):
the left. So what happens isthat that's a tendency. So you're gonna
put sting on Michael Pittman and Stingythat's pretty good last week, so he
should be able to lockdown Michael Pittmanfor a lot. The issue I have
is what's gonna happen to all theunderneath stuff. Who are you going to
be or we are going or weare we'll be able to stop those five
(38:59):
six seven yard throws. That's myconcern. My concern there is isn't necessarily
deep through I think that with thecorners that we have, even if Jalen
Petrie and Jimmy Water out, Ithink the issue really is the underneath stuff
with them then obviously his athleticism. Now, Lamar Jackson, well, well
quick to your point. You makea good point because last week and Richards,
(39:22):
I think I saw his most ofhis throws were like around I think
he averaged three and a half yards. Uh, you know, a lot
of his completion and was yards afterthe catch. Well, a lot of
his his passing yards were yards afterthe catch. So I don't think that
they opened up the offense, whichyou know they don't. That doesn't mean
they showed much either, But toyour point, yeah, I think you
(39:44):
can expect a pretty healthy dose ofthat. Again. I mean, so
he had the biggest catch you couldsay, at twenty nine yards, but
it was a throw that was atthe line of scrimmage on Michael Pittman took
that right. So, like Isaid, if we could, if we
can stop the the underneath place theunderneath throws, then we have a good
(40:04):
chance of stopping the passing game. Now, in terms of stopping him the
run, whether you put a spyin him, we were able to let
the Lamar Jackson. Lamar Jackson isobviously a former MVP, and we kept
him to only thirty eight yards onthe ground. So now the thing,
obviously Anthony Richards said, is twohundred and fifty freaking pounds. So the
thing is he's he's a take. He's a real tape compared to Lamar Jackson,
(40:27):
so that would be my concern isreally just stopping him and his athleticism.
But I don't think that he's nota passing threat yet. I think
that he's already showing tendencies. He'sthrowing short. If we stop him from
running, we can win this game. Even with the all the freaking injuries
that we have right now, andwe have a ton that we can still
win this game. My prediction isthat it is a close game, but
(40:49):
I think it's like a seventeen tofourteen game. Seventeen Texans and all the
tds from the Coats will be rushingJD. He's not passing Jtis cream Saw
and we can't get one passing TV. I got my Pittman on Fantasy Benyways,
that's something we really care about.Yeah, that's it, That's all
(41:13):
we care about, but I agreewith you on VT. I think it's
gonna be a low scoring game.I think it's gonna come out, you
know, real sluggish. I thinkgonna get a couple of booze and up
in there, because you know,is good for booing. But I think
CJ is gonna have a better performance. I'm looking at three hundred yards passing
two touchdowns this game right here.I hope to hope, to hope the
(41:37):
secondary, you know, continue whatthey did from week one. I don't
think the Colts are rid of thatgood. But who knows, because no
stranger things has happened. But Ithink we win this game one and one
after two weeks. I love cockyTexans fans love it, love love I'm
(41:59):
talking about. But then you're gonnalove this one. I too got detection
winning. I got it. Tenten to three, I see, damn,
that's the that's the whole ten tothree, ten to three, four
games I watching now. I don'teven want to see that mess three.
I'm gonna I'm gonna leave that game. We don't what I call that on
(42:23):
Sundays. That's my nap game, that's what that is. I've been taking
that nap during this game, damnten to three. Look, both are
rookies. They're gonna make some rookiemistakes. So I think it's gonna be
a tough, a defensive battle.I think they get Damian Pierce more involved.
So I do see c J gettingthis press throwing touchdown. But I
(42:45):
see uh Damon Pierce game by eightyninety yards hopefully more than thirteen carries this
game. Who gets the one touchdown? I'm gonna say it is Tank though,
Oh okay, rookie rookie to Rooky, all right, and I'm gonna
say I'm gonna say it's a screen. So I'm telling me it is what
(43:13):
it is. You know, rookie'sRicky's Is that really exciting game when they
played each other. So Betty again, man, thanks for coming on to
