Speaker 1 (00:00):
M hm, that comic podcast. What is up, true believers?
We are back talking magic the Gathering. I'm Lance, your
host with me. I got features year and I got Huie.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
I must have went to the wrong room or something.
Why am I here?

Speaker 1 (00:26):
We are going to get you into magic. We're gonna
make this happen.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Yeah, yes, hold on, let me let me ask him. So, Hueie.
What if I told you there's a game all right
that take you out of space, like like Star Trek
if you will, there's turtles involved, and you love turtles.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
Star Trek Turtles I like.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
I like turtles, like turtles.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
What if I told you can get all those things
and it may be some of your favorite comic characters.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
What about transformers?

Speaker 1 (01:00):
Transforms?

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Transformers got Transformers? Okay, I'm intrigued. What do we got?

Speaker 1 (01:07):
So Universes Beyond is now?

Speaker 2 (01:11):
This is magic? All this stuff has magic.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
This is all magic.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
I'm out gathering.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
Dang it. This was a short show. So so Universes
Beyond has been part of Magic now for a few years.
And what it is is it's magic reaching out to
all the different ips and being able to bring all
of these beloved characters into the game. And uh, and
it's been really cool for bringing new players into the

(01:40):
game when they see their favorite characters on these cards. However,
over the last couple of years, it's been a lot
they've flooded the market with this stuff. And so we've
got previously Warhammer forty K has cards, Transformers has cards,

(02:02):
Doctor who has cards, Jurassic Park has cards. I mean, really, dang,
you're getting to you name it, we got it.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
And so they're the funko pops of Yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
They're getting that way, yeah for sure. And uh and
OG Magic players are not happy, but newer players are static.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Okay, So question for you then, and I hate to insrupt,
but like, yeah, what is the big deal for like
the OG players, Like why are they mad about this?

Speaker 1 (02:33):
So when you're when you're playing magic like OG Magic,
you've got your wizards, you've got your barbarians, you've got
these fantasy characters that it feels like you're casting spells
and you're doing these things that are really fantasy driven,
a lot of D and D type effects things like that,

(02:53):
And when you interrupt that fantasy with Jurassic Park, it
can throw off the entire vibe of it. And that's
what a lot of players are not happy about.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
My Dinosaur, each your Wizard.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
And then a time Lord comes out and kills them
bold you know, I know of I.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
Mean, so you are allowed to like mix and match
in your decks, the different yeah ips and stuff a lot.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
In the format Commander, which is the most popular format,
you get the one card, you build it around and
it'll have several colors on it, and then you can
have cards of that color in the deck, but it's
got to match your Commander. But it's We've got some
crazy sets coming out. We just had Spider Man. We

(03:45):
just had freaking Spider Man. And as a Spider Man junkie,
I I don't know that I loved it. I was
really banging on the door waiting for this set to
come out. I was I was that dude in the
window in the commercial saying open, open.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
Open, open.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
And when it finally released, it was super underwhelming. It
felt like they didn't really do it justice. I got
two decks out of it that I built that are
cool for the flavor purposes of it being Spider Man,
but overall as a set, it just felt so shoehorned.
But Magic is learning their lesson with that, because we

(04:32):
have teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coming out, and.

Speaker 3 (04:39):
Yes, for me, I love the cars that that that
that looks like it is coming out with. I have
no problem with any of these. But I'm sorry, go ahead.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
I believe it comes out early next year. I don't
think they've given an exact date on it.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Uh, worldwide March six.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
March six, Oh that's quick?

Speaker 2 (04:58):
And then what next month we have Star Trek releasing.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
Mmm?

Speaker 1 (05:03):
Dang.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
And who's the big Star Trek fan here?

Speaker 2 (05:09):
Maybe me?

Speaker 3 (05:11):
So? I mean, listen, I'm just saying this is maybe
a good entry way for you to start playing magic with.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
Us, absolutely one of us.

Speaker 3 (05:22):
Of us.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
I mean, are you a fan of Avatar the Last Airbender?

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Not really?

Speaker 3 (05:29):
No? What? Oh?

Speaker 1 (05:30):
Come on? Are you fanning Turtles?

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Of course? You know I like Turtles.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
Are you a fan of Marvel superheroes?

Speaker 2 (05:38):
Of course?

Speaker 1 (05:39):
Also getting a set in twenty twenty six? Mm Lord
of the Rings the Hobbit, Yeah, you know, that's right
up your rally and Star Trek Star Trek getting a
whole set is wild.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Star Trek. I mean, look, if Doctor Who's got a set,
might as well throw a Star Trek in there as well,
right exactly. Yeah, although Star Trek is Star Trek at
last couple years had a nice upswing and it's already
kind of one of the downward swing now because we
had like a few different shows running and now they're
kind of winding all those down. Next year there's only

(06:16):
gonna be one show. So yeah, did mister mark by
a year or two.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
Frankly, I feel like it's time to narrow it down
to one mega show. I mean, we had E three
for video games back in the day, and that was
just one big show for all video games. Yeah, let's
let's make it one. But I just the the fact
that if you're a fan of it, odds are you'll

(06:43):
be able to play with it in this magic set
or in these magic sets.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
I mean, like cool little phrases out of each like
out of each ip and put them on the cards
and the like whatever that card does, you're like, Oh,
that's that's cool. That makes it is like this is
And I think that's part of the lord that gets
the newer, newer players in like myself. Yeah, which I
want to double back and actually I want to make

(07:10):
a comment about like how the OG players feel about
the sets kind of breaking up the lord now for me,
and I mean no disrespecting. I say this because.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
It's usually.

Speaker 3 (07:25):
But it was a OG player that put me on right.
But like quite literally, I look at it like this,
right I And mind you, I like the lore of
Magic itself, but the lore of Magic is not what
I'm focused on when I'm playing the game. So for me,
like having new new things come in like Turtles, Final

(07:47):
Fantasy Spider Man, for me, that's like amazing, And I'm like,
I want to play with those decks because those are
the other things that I'm highly interested in. Right. I
love these these other ips and bringing them into a
game like Magic, and like because it the gameplay doesn't
change adding another another dimension, which painstakingly you have planes

(08:10):
walkers who travel from dimension to dimension. So why can't
like these these other ips exist in the world of Magic.
It's it can all be part of the lore. I
think it's just been one way for a long time,
for such a long time that people just like this
this they can't do this. It's like no, one hundred yeah,
and you should enjoy it because if if when things

(08:34):
stay the same, right, they lose their flavor and people
tend to right and people tend to fall when you
do things like this by introducing other ips and that
help like like spread the actual thing itself. You we like,
you should you should champion that because that means the
thing that you love is growing even more for sure.

Speaker 2 (08:56):
Yes, and you think these fans of magic would actually
want to grow their brand and get more players, right,
get more players involved, Like don't be a little nerdy
kid in the back of the comic shop playing magic,
like it would be a full you know.

Speaker 3 (09:13):
It'll be a full tons of people.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
Yeah, Like Final Fantasy sold two million dollars worth of
product and one day and that was not just oh
Gene Magic players. That was such a big bump. And
new players that are going to this game because their
favorite I P is now available on cards.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
Right, Like the Final Fantasy drop alone by itself was
probably funded the next batch of.

Speaker 1 (09:42):
For like they're still can how long?

Speaker 3 (09:48):
But it's crazy to even think of. And that's so
when when when older players are upset about things like this,
it's just it drives me up a walls. I'm like,
I D.

Speaker 1 (09:59):
I think, Hey, the problem overall is that prior to
this year, fifty percent of all Magic sets were universes
beyond fifty percent half of it. Now this next year
with Spider Man with Final Fantasy not even counted. Six

(10:22):
of the eight set releases coming out next year, No,
five of the eight are universes beyond. That's what's upsetting
the veteran players more than anything is where we have
a set that has been delayed for months now because
of the universes beyond. Like, I love it. I love
seeing all my favorite bs in these cards. I go

(10:43):
out and I buy these cards. I bought the Spider
Man set because it's awesome and I'm loving the new
traction we're getting from this. But at that same time,
I really kind of just want Magic back.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
You know, I got you.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
So.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
You said you were a little underwhelmed by the Spiderman set.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
Yeah, just from a poor mechanic standpoint.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
Okay, go, what could they do with Turtles and Star
Trek to make it whelming?

Speaker 1 (11:15):
Ye? Star Trek, I have no earthly idea punitated that,
Like what they're gonna do? You know, they could do
everything from aliens to spaceships, and it could be anything,
but this Ninja Turtle set coming out. We did have
some of the cards being released, and they are, first

(11:36):
of all, gorgeous. I believe Eastman did a lot of
the art for that, really, and so seeing the cards
and knowing they're coming from the original creator is sweet,
just right off the top. Even if you don't play
as you might want to buy the cards just for
that fact. And the different colors for the Turtles ties

(11:59):
in to the game so much because those colors are
already mostly represented as their own mechanics and their own
individual things. I think the Ninja Turtles set as a whole,
bringing all of them together on a card, having them
out individually, I think it's going to do really well.

(12:21):
They've got a lot to work with, a lot more
than they had to work with with Spider Man, which
is essentially you just make the same character over and
over again with different colors.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
Okay, yeah, I'm on their website right now. It says
I guess Eastman is going to do four borderless headliner cards.
So what does that mean to me?

Speaker 1 (12:40):
Chase cards? They're they're those cards, yeah, exactly.

Speaker 3 (12:44):
And by borders means the artwork is all across the card.
There's no cutoff for it.

Speaker 2 (12:50):
Gotcha. He's going to do a couple of them looks
like and there's metallity. He's gonna do the r for
those cards. Looks like that's gonna I mean as a
turtle collector, Yeah, I may would buy the cards just
to try and get those, but huh, probably still not
going to play.

Speaker 3 (13:11):
No, no, no, you should definitely play.

Speaker 1 (13:13):
I feel like if someone taught you how to play,
if you're willing to let them teach you, I feel
like you would really enjoy it. But at that same time,
it is a It's one of those hobbies that you
just it's not cheap.

Speaker 3 (13:29):
No, it's right. Of course, I've discovered that it's really not.
When once you hit about when you get at least
about like four to five decks it and you're like, man,
I don't know if I could do anymore. And the turtles,
he's like, ah.

Speaker 1 (13:47):
Right, I just made a whole bunch of room. My
wife calls it our our savings account or our insurance fund.
If anything were to go down, just selling magic cards,
I mean.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
That's always going to have a backup, is cool? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (14:08):
Good.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
I'm looking. I'm looking at the prices for these things.
It looks like a booster pack is like seven bucks,
which is is it really Yeah, so they probably got
to pay a few bucks for the licensing fee. All
of these universes beyond have been higher priced, and we
think it's because of that. Yeah yeah, I mean that's

(14:29):
almost one hundred percent begose of that because yeah, Collector
Boosters eight thirty eight dollars, Commander Deck seventy bundle seventy
a pizza pizza bundle.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
So which is the box for? Is really cool?

Speaker 2 (14:47):
Yeah? Actually, if anyone was gonna look at go ahead
of her two Magic's website and look up the turtles,
the uh yeah, it's pretty uh pretty great. Actually, right here,
I will share the screen.

Speaker 3 (15:00):
The Lank cards are cool. They just had like the
pizza with the shapes on them. It was a pretty
cool too.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
They read those scene cards that like make a scene
if you put them all together.

Speaker 3 (15:10):
Yeah yeah, the Super Shudder card, Oh yeah, you can
just put that in any deck, Like that's crazy.

Speaker 1 (15:20):
I didn't see the Super Shredder, but yeah, here's the
Oh yeah, they got that classic TM and t R
and he signed it to That is so cool. That's
not going to be cheap. I think it's going to
do towards the thousand plus figure per card.

Speaker 2 (15:37):
Oh God, I want, I would probably want.

Speaker 1 (15:41):
Oh and it's doubling season too, which is a huge
card in magic. Doubling Season is a card that whenever
you would make one of something, you make to instead.

Speaker 2 (15:51):
Essentially, they got this one from the Pizza Bundle set.

Speaker 3 (15:59):
Now ritual that's a man a Ramp card.

Speaker 1 (16:04):
Yeah, those are so great. I love those a lot.
That's essentially those cards are called lands, and they're essentially
the money you would spend to cash your spells.

Speaker 3 (16:16):
Yeah, okay.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
And then the box, The boxes themselves look kind of neat.
Yeah for shipping.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
Well, you can tell just by by these designs and
the fact that they even reached out to Eastman that
there's care put into this set. You know, there's definitely
a lot more here than there was for Spider Man.
Like we got for Spider Man. It was just like, hey,
there's a Spider Man set coming out, and then that
was it.

Speaker 3 (16:45):
I wonder more time with the Turtles.

Speaker 2 (16:48):
Yeah, I wonder if Eastman was a little more forthcoming
than Marvel was in general with uh.

Speaker 1 (16:54):
With Spider Man, I wouldn't be surprised if he played magic.
And since the world's biggest card game.

Speaker 3 (17:06):
Yeah, he ver well, Mic, So if if Eastman's playing it,
what's stopping you, baby?

Speaker 1 (17:15):
Right? So I think it's going to get into it.

Speaker 2 (17:20):
I think my money's tied up in other things right now.
I have other collectibles that I spend my moneys on.

Speaker 3 (17:29):
Yeah, it's you should.

Speaker 2 (17:30):
I mean, like these My Devastator I just completed. That
probably cost me over over a hundred actually yeah, probably
one hundred and fifty bucks total complete, so I got superior. Yeah,
so my my moneys are tied up other other spots
right now for collecting.

Speaker 3 (17:51):
Right, Listen, no worries. Just like when you get your deck,
just let me a minty, know, you know, come over,
We'll show you how to play. We'll get you all
set up. Uh, and then you know, you'll just be
part of the pot. No work, Yeah, no work.

Speaker 1 (18:03):
They've got a deck coming out that is all five colors,
so you can literally put any card that exists in
that deck. So and if you buy it just for
for the sake of having the one Ninja Turtles Commander deck,
it's that's just one step in the right direction of

(18:24):
teaching you how to use it.

Speaker 3 (18:28):
Uh, listen, magic thinking baby, Huy Turtles, Star Trek, you
got two decks already.

Speaker 1 (18:35):
Bears Beats Battle Sarcalactica.

Speaker 2 (18:40):
I mean, look, personally, if I would probably want to
get just a cards of the Four Turtles, I would
probably want to get Captain Kirk the Enterprise the card, sure,
and then a Spider Man card and probably call it
a deck.

Speaker 1 (18:54):
Hey you know what that's that's six more cards than
you wanted before. That's true. My job is done here.

Speaker 2 (19:04):
And then I wait from the go up and price
and sell.

Speaker 3 (19:06):
Them all right, I mean now you'll play with them first.

Speaker 1 (19:11):
Hmmm. Yeah, you'll read them and be like, dang, I
wonder what that looks like in action?

Speaker 3 (19:18):
Nope, Like, hey, guys, what does this mean? Glad you asked?

Speaker 2 (19:25):
I will put him in my binder which is full
of McFarland's DC cards, and that's where they will.

Speaker 1 (19:31):
Live there and you'll look at them.

Speaker 3 (19:33):
Every day, right, collector you are?

Speaker 2 (19:39):
Look, you guys can try, but I unfortunately, I don't
think I can get into this.

Speaker 1 (19:43):
Yeah, I mean the day's not over yet, but.

Speaker 3 (19:47):
No, I'm pushing for this. I feel like you you
would get into it and you'd enjoy it. You just
haven't yet that's all. It's always a yet.

Speaker 1 (19:57):
Well, we'll get you guys well in four on our
progress of breaking Huey's well down.

Speaker 2 (20:05):
But you guys have been trying for for weeks now, honestly.

Speaker 1 (20:08):
But uh, I think that's it for for this news
here and uh and trying to break hue as will.

Speaker 2 (20:17):
Break away.

Speaker 1 (20:18):
You can. Uh you can find us everywhere at that
comic podcast and uh that comic pot on X I
believe yes, but YouTube, YouTube is where you want to go,
That's where we're at.

Speaker 3 (20:31):
