Speaker 2 (00:39):
Fantastic, We're gonna We're just diving right into things. Just
give you a quick overview on today's show where we're
discussing the new Batman number one from Eisner Award winning
writer Matt Fraction and artists and I'm gonna get this
right or hey, yemen Ed's We also have a couple
of bits of information regarding with James gun has said

(01:00):
this past week about the future of the d c U.
So a lot of that's been making its round, so
we at least want to make sure that we touch
on it. And uh so with that, let's get started.
How you guys doing not too good man, but yourself.

Speaker 4 (01:17):
I'm pretty good. I'm pretty good. Getting the coffee in.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Me ming over Spigate from last night with the Eagles
the Gate. Oh my gosh, great way to start the season, guys, a.

Speaker 4 (01:32):
Wild Yeah, anyway.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
That was not the football show, although we should probably
do one of those. Anyway, Let's let's just dive right
into Batman number one. Uh. This it For whatever reason,
this was not on my radar at all. I had
no idea and then I saw number one, Like, what
what's going on here? A few things about this book?
So number one, this is the fourth time that the

(01:58):
Batman title has been real unched, and it's eighty five
years so that makes it crazy very special. Something I
didn't know and I had to actually count this. There's
forty nine covers for this book.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
WHOA.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
That's a lot, including blind bags. So there's like there's
the A, the Bees, that features loves, there's like the incentives,
then there's like the special incentives, and then there's you know,
there's foil covers. It's it's pretty.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
We went all they went all in on that.

Speaker 4 (02:31):
Yeah, I know they've been saying different like publication companies
have had their own list of cover bees and cover
A's as well, and that's interesting.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
It's it's crazy. There's a site out there I forget
exactly what it is, but it'll show you every single cover,
and I'm just like one, two, three, there is a.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
There is a new in the collector market.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
There was like people who are trying to get them all,
who are trying to get all fifty or all, like
you know, haveing many covers. And I always thought that
was insane to try to get all that stuff.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
But pretty cool.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
I guess he gives it more more options for artists.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Yeah, I mean, maybe one of these days, maybe we'll
do a deep dive into the incentive cover industry because
it's it's insane, like some of these you you don't
even get. When I was selling comics for a brief
amount of time, the publishers would send out incentive books
that were like you couldn't buy them, You couldn't even

(03:26):
get them as incentives. It was like here you go.
You're a reseller, so here you go. And I remember
getting a Punchline number one. It was like a special cover.
It was a black and white cover, no idea what
it's worth now, but you know, that's how you get
some of these actual books. It's it's pretty insane. But
back to Batman, so you know, we have new suit,

(03:47):
new tech, potentially a holographic AI. Alfred, I don't.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
Know, ye, yeah, I wasn't sure about that either.

Speaker 4 (03:55):
I was gonna I was gonna asking about that.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
Pretty weird seeing him next to back Man. We'll jump
into that a little bit. But this issue really just
lays the groundwork for what to expect from Batman. You know,
in this new Gotham City.

Speaker 4 (04:10):
It's a whole new vibe, like it is unique.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
Yeah, I was gonna say that, like, not a lot happened,
you know, in that issue, but the vibe was what
what I got from the whole issue was after reading
and I was like, all right, you know, this is
the Batman that I like, Like this is this like
almost like Batman's back in a way, because we're getting
back to the detective, you know, the thinker Batman. He's
got the technology. But even Alfred was like, you know,

(04:37):
you are a world race detective, sir, you know what
I mean. It's like like laykating, you know, Batman.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
But when he first appeared in the book. So we'll
still whatever, it's been out a couple of days. Everybody's
going to read it anyway, so we'll go spoilers on
some of this stuff. But Batman's going somewhere in the
batmobile and Alfred is sitting right next to him.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
I'm like, first time ever, kind of weird.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
And then like I didn't catch it until a little
later in the book when they're they're definitely two different. Uh.
You can kind of see through Alfred like he's not as.

Speaker 4 (05:09):
Drawn and they're pointing it out in a most subtle way.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
So, I mean, I guess we don't know if he's
if they're carrying on the continuity from when he died
or not. I don't know. We'll we'll see, but that
kind of kind of yeah, what you know, we'll talk
about the villain of this book in a minute. But
where did it lead off? Or Gordon?

Speaker 1 (05:36):
Yeah, yeah, back on the beat.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Yeah. So one of the panels the I guess his
partner called him Commissioner Gordon and he's like, no, it's
just you know, officer Gordon. So we know he's been
either demoted or he stepped down. You know, I'm sure
we'll see where that goes. What are your thoughts?

Speaker 1 (05:58):
I was thinking the same thing.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
I would like, Okay, you know, this is a different
plot twist. You know what I mean, like, maybe something happened.
I wasn't aware of anything happened previous to this, but
I thought that was a pretty cool thing. Maybe the
job got to be too much for him and he
wanted to be out there with the people. But I'm
curious to see where that goes. I do know that
Fraction said that each story is a self contained story
for every issue and that but they will be kind

(06:20):
of connected as a series, so maybe we'll get more
of that later.

Speaker 4 (06:24):
And I love that idea. I love that you can
pick up any of these issues of the New Batman
and be like, oh, you know, that was a cool story.
Let me connect all the puzzle pieces by getting the
rest of it. You start an issue six and then
go back to issue one, like, I like that feel
of it.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
Yeah, that's that's not done a lot in comics.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
Usually you have to read six to twelve issues of
anything to figure out what's going on. So as a
Batman character a little more commercial, you know, if you're
a new reader jumping on late, it's going to give
you a better opportunity to enjoy what you've picked up
and read and to be able to backtrack instead of
reading it being like, I have no idea what's going.

Speaker 4 (06:59):
On, there's no context for anything.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
I remember many many, many moons ago when I first
started reading Batman, like every story arc was maybe three
issues and that was then you kind of just moved
on to the next thing. The six twelve twenty four
story runs are are insane sometimes, and Yeah.

Speaker 4 (07:21):
I really like this, this empathetic Batman we're getting in
this story. I really like the way that it's almost
countering what he's saying. He's like, hey, you know, I there,
we got to give these people and these creatures a chance.
And then he goes and runs over like eight people
in his car and then gets out and beats the

(07:43):
hell out of him.

Speaker 3 (07:45):
It's interesting because like they were, you know, he's talking
to people, and so he kind of like dismisses.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
Him, you know what I mean.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
He's kind of like right next, like I'm I'm onto this.
And I always feel like that kind of that obsession
is sort of Batman. It's like, yeah, he missed the
whole conver He doesn't. He's not missing the conversation you're
talking about. It's just not important to him. He's focused,
Like that page one, when he's in that the building
and it's like the big hole I guess where the
villain jumped out.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
And he's like, I'm so tired of this.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
I was like, it's like a nod to like starting
Batman over again at another one.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
I'm so tired of this. But it actually kind of works,
you know.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
Yeah, the we talked a little bit about the villain. Yeah,
so it's Killer Croc. But it's very interesting take on
the evolution of Killer Croc, at least from what we're
seeing in this. So he's uh, I guess the evolutionized is.

Speaker 4 (08:42):
This kind of adolescent.

Speaker 2 (08:44):
Yeah, it's it's very much Alien Earth, where you know,
the mind of a child inside the body of a
full grown you know, alligator killing beast.

Speaker 4 (08:55):
I didn't put that together. Yeah, that's a very good point.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
Yeah. Did did you notice that the so Batman spent
some time talking with the doctor. I don't recall her name,
but you know, he's like, make sure you don't call
the police. Always call me. I'll handle this stuff. We'll
get into the police in a minute. Uh. Did you
catch that she was wearing crocs?

Speaker 4 (09:17):
No'm hilarious.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
So it was it was that interaction with Batman. It
was a tiny, tiny panel down in the right hand
corner where you could see that she's actually wearing crocs.

Speaker 4 (09:32):
That that was pretty funny.

Speaker 1 (09:36):
The art was amazing, uh Art.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
I like it to be a little cartoony, but also
like kind of like realism in there too. Keeps the
comic flair. I mean, Jorges worked on Punchline and Crush.
There's great DC characters and stuff like that.

Speaker 1 (09:51):
I think.

Speaker 3 (09:52):
I mean, I'm I'm more excited about this book than
I thought I was gonna be. Actually, yeah, I mean,
when a new Batman number one comes out, you know,
they reboot Spider Man quite a bit, But when a
new Batman number one comes out, I tried to pay
attention and I kept seeing, you know, people posting the
cover and stuff, and I'm like, man, I'm gonna have
to and it's fractions. I was like, I'm gonna have
to dive in and see what he's gonna do. I'm
glad I picked it up, and I'm now I'm most

(10:13):
excited about this book.

Speaker 4 (10:15):
I was picking up my normal books from my shop
and and you know, like y'all, I had no idea
this was even coming out. And my guy pointed it
out and he's like, hey, new Batman number one and
it's a bigger book, yeah, and the most number ones,
right yeah, And I was like, yes, sold, give it
to me.

Speaker 3 (10:35):
It seemed like I had a soft launch, but they did,
Like I did see you know, info that it was
coming out like months.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
Ago, but it felt like a little bit of a
softer launch.

Speaker 3 (10:44):
As you know, the Batman Verus Deadpool stuff is like
ramping up.

Speaker 2 (10:48):
Yeah, I think with what we do, like we're so
in deep with a lot of the media, and so
a lot of different shows and movies have been pretty
much on the forefront of our minds recently, so you know,
and I know we were going to be doing way
more of these for everybody that's watching and listening, Like
we were getting back into the covering of books, and

(11:08):
it's probably going to be more like this where it's
one specific book instead of you know, in the previous
version of our show, we used to do you know,
a whole slew of the week's books at the tail
end of our show, and you know, we did notice
a lot of people weren't necessarily sticking around for that,
so you know, they're our core audience is very much
comic book focus, So we want to make sure that

(11:30):
this info is getting out there because you know, when
something like Batman one drops, you know it is it
is pretty uh, you know, topical for everybody. What else
so good?

Speaker 4 (11:42):
Why do we think about the new mayor, the mayor
of Gotham being Vandal Savage? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (11:51):
I didn't catch the name, Okay, I did.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
I saw Savage in there, and I'm like, aren't you
have the scar on the eye And I'm thinking, like, okay,
well that's you know, a new placement for that that character.

Speaker 2 (12:01):
Right, Yeah, that whole thing reminded me of Daredevil the
show Born Again when King Fisk is King Fisk, King
pins Slash Wilson. Fisk basically takes promotes this elite you know,
unit of the police force to go after you know, vigilantes,

(12:26):
and this kind of seems the same way. Although do
we think that they're robots? We think, do we think
they're they're tech? Because I didn't. I wasn't getting the vibe.
But these are actually people under those uniform things.

Speaker 3 (12:40):
Yeah, with the mask and kind of like, m you
got to give Batman somebody to beat up later in the.

Speaker 4 (12:47):
Book, right, especially with this this representation we're getting from
him as this you know people person, you know, caring
about everything, and and we're getting that contrast from Anal
Savage where he's just like rolling with an iron fist,
destroy everyone, beat down everyone, and is like hold up
a minute.

Speaker 1 (13:07):
You know.

Speaker 4 (13:08):
We get this scene towards the end where Batman's sitting
down with with Kroc and and he's just like I
did this, and he's like, I know, buddy, and almost
like wraps his arm around him like you know, it's
gonna be okay type thing, and it just it I
felt it, like in my heart, like this is that.

Speaker 2 (13:30):
That's great writing? Number one. Yeah, when you're for me,
it very seldom happens in comics. When I'm reading it,
I'm like, oh man, yeah, when they're talking about the
dinosaur and then uh huh, you know, she gives the doctor.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the doctor gives Kroc
the dinosaur and then the dinosaur, and then Kroc gives

(13:52):
a dinosaur to Batman Like.

Speaker 5 (13:53):
Yeah, yeah, you mentioned it, you know what I mean? Yeah,
I was not expect Oh no, I was just gonna
say I thought it was cool that he was like Batman,
you saw get to see Batman kind of let himself
down a little bit, takes the cow off, he's kind
of getting real.

Speaker 3 (14:09):
Doctor comes in. You see him in the side panel,
he's like putting the cow back on, like tucked away.
Like I don't know, like I don't want to see
too much of it. I don't want them to be
too soft, but I also like it really peels back
the layers, you know, no pun on, like who he
really is and what's really going on with them?

Speaker 2 (14:26):
Yeah, after I read this, there's you know, the the
end panel we can talk about in a second. But
after I read this, I'm like, how are they going
to write the rest of or whatever other villains are
going to come in? Like what like number one, what's
Joker going to look like? Because Jokers going to show

(14:46):
up And there's obviously a slightly different character design, which means,
you know, more toys, which is cool hopefully, But I
don't know if that crossed your mind, like what Penguin,
you know is Penguin didn't show up?

Speaker 4 (14:58):
What it didn't? But now I'm excited thinking about it.

Speaker 2 (15:02):
Just a Croc's design was it was really going on?

Speaker 3 (15:07):
It was more like a diesel version of himself you know,
and the whole like getting more childlike almost made me
think of like sort of the brain of reptiles and
and things being small. I'm just like, oh yeah, talking
about the dichotomy of like where whaling isn't it it's
like not whaling anymore? And but yeah, I mean I
immediately when I saw that it was all inclusive issues,

(15:28):
the first thing I thought was, Oh, each issue would
be a villain, so like, yeah, this should be another villain,
and we get Tim Drake back, right, So yeah, to
see Robin read again.

Speaker 2 (15:40):
Yeah, that was the big surprise at the end. I'm
sure we would. I guess with every Batman book, you
never know, you never quite know when and who Robin
will be. You know, even if he shows up, and
obviously you're gonna you're gonna put Robin in there, but
you know, he places a call to Batman and you

(16:00):
know he's now So I guess at the at the
very end he's surrounded by the Special Police at least, yeah,
I think it is. Yeah, Yeah, I think you could
really tell. But vandals, Yeah, I don't know, I don't
have a special name for it. We'll get there. Yeah,
so you kind of know where that's going.

Speaker 4 (16:21):
But good do we do we know how often this
is going to be releasing? Is it a once a month?
Is it every couple of weeks?

Speaker 2 (16:28):
I think at the end or I read through the
back end of it, it said something about October, so
I think it's monthly.

Speaker 1 (16:34):
That'd be cool.

Speaker 4 (16:36):
It'd be cool to get this giant size every time too.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
Yeah, put the extra in the back.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
I saw a little sneap when it's one of the
second page or third page when they're in the city
was a science says Gotham City, Like you don't have
to be crazy to live here, but it helps.

Speaker 1 (16:53):
I was like, man, that's awesome.

Speaker 2 (16:56):
Yeah, it's those little details. I love this.

Speaker 4 (17:00):
It made me feel and that's what I love about comics.
I'm hype for more. I can't wait.

Speaker 3 (17:08):
Yeah, it's a central it's a centralized Batman's story. Instead
of them trying to be too different, you know. I mean,
they always try to come in and do something like
Super off the Wall about Batman to be unique and
tell a story they've never told before. But just a
good centralized Batman comic book is really what works and
people will probably read into like the double digit issues and.

Speaker 4 (17:31):
I'm so glad about the artist.

Speaker 2 (17:33):
Who is it, Jorge Jorge humenz Is.

Speaker 4 (17:38):
The art is so good. It goes with the tone
of it, and if you feel the art, you do
and and all of that coming together, it almost feels perfect.
Like you don't just give a Batman number one to
just anyone, you know.

Speaker 1 (17:56):
True, true, It's a good team on it for sure.

Speaker 2 (18:01):
So it's it's safe to say that this is a
must buy for every number one Batman. Well, yeah, for
many number ones, but Batman fans, comic fans, if you
haven't red Batman in a long time or a while
at least, I know, like Detective Comics Man it was

(18:22):
up until maybe six or seven months ago they were
doing a run of a story that was like twenty
four issues and like every time, I'm like, they didn't
change the cover, So I'm like, all right, I'm not
jumping in yet. This is obviously a great time to
jump in on the book. The future looks pretty pretty
awesome for Batman. Any last thoughts on that or I

(18:43):
think we're good. Yeah, that was it, Yeah, fantastic, yep.
October coming up. There were some other A lot of
the absolute stuff came out this week. We're not going
to talk about it here, but you know, make sure
to look at for those cool last bit of information

(19:04):
because we didn't talk about it earlier. In this week,
James Gunn announced Man of Tomorrow that's going to be
releasing in twenty twenty seven. The key things on this
is he specified that this is not Superman Too. It's
not a sequel. How I don't know.

Speaker 4 (19:21):
But doesn't that seem quick though? Twenty twenty seven is
like basically a year away?

Speaker 2 (19:27):
Uh well, yeah, yeah, I mean so it like Supergirl's
almost in the can. So you had, you know, Superman
twenty twenty five, Supergirl twenty twenty six, Man of Tomorrow
twenty twenty seven, along with the Batman. Oh yes, so
and Clayface? Is that a twenty twenty.

Speaker 1 (19:46):
Six Yeah to twenty twenty six?

Speaker 2 (19:47):
I think you man? Yeah, all right, so things are
things are heating up?

Speaker 4 (19:51):
Are good?

Speaker 3 (19:52):
The thing about the Clayface, I don't really think that
was part of the plan. It was sort of something
that like we're getting as extra because the materials like
was so well written, so kind of a fluke a
little add on they did there.

Speaker 4 (20:04):
Which if we're getting you know, a clay Face movie
because of the story. I couldn't be more excited for that.
Give me that unique story, give me something that's worth
the whole movie.

Speaker 2 (20:15):
Yeah. The if you remember back, I don't know, this
was probably two months ago, maybe a month ago. They
got rid of the Woman of Tomorrow portion of Supergirl.
It's just Supergirl now, So I'm guessing they got rid
of that in order they want to exist.

Speaker 1 (20:33):
Yeah, yeah, it's smart to get rid of it early.

Speaker 2 (20:36):
But then it's also like, are they just going to
change the name of Man of Tomorrow? Like yeah, yeah,
Like I was saying earlier, like I kind of have
this theory that the focus of this movie might actually
be on Lex Luthor. The for those of you who didn't,
and I'll post a picture somewhere in here of the

(20:56):
picture James Gunn put up was of super Man standing
next to Lex in is you know, green and purple
armor Max suit kind of thing. I wouldn't doubt it,
and I wouldn't put it past him that Man of
Tomorrow is actually not Superman. But they're going to be
labeling Luther that, or he's gonna label himself that as

(21:17):
this you know person that's that's gonna save the world. Yeah,
because we know, like Lex can really shift his you know,
persona a little bit where he's a super evil dude
or you know, everybody loves him. I don't know any
any thoughts on that.

Speaker 1 (21:36):
No, I think you're right.

Speaker 3 (21:37):
I you know, I love seeing him in the suit
when when I saw the picture drop, and it makes
me think that, like, Okay, well he sort of feels
like he got slighted right from the first film, so
like his big return is going to be like, well,
now I'm bigger and better and I'm just as helpful
and just as tough as Superman, so you know, I'm
the Man of tomorrow. You know, I could definitely see

(21:58):
that being like his thing, trying to kind of like
create a new persona for himself to recover from the
last film.

Speaker 1 (22:05):
Even though it's not a sequel.

Speaker 4 (22:07):
Do we think it's gonna have it the same vibe
of the hope that we got from that first movie,
or do we think that each one of these are
going to have a different tonal shift.

Speaker 2 (22:19):
I'll get back to you on that after it's Supergirl.

Speaker 1 (22:22):
Yeah, that's a good point. I was gonna say, although.

Speaker 2 (22:24):
Different, Shoot, I should know this but I don't different writer,
different director obviously, or wait, Gun didn't. Gun did not
do super Girl at all. He didn't write it and
he didn't direct it.

Speaker 4 (22:39):
Okay, yeah, I didn't know that either.

Speaker 2 (22:43):
We'll see. Don't quote me on that. I know he
didn't write it because I think the person that I
forget it correct me in the comments.

Speaker 1 (22:55):
There we go, Internet interact with this with this clip.

Speaker 2 (22:58):
Please please do yeah, I mean that's you know, that's
kind of it. Another short show for everybody, unless you
guys have another point or two. I think we're I.

Speaker 4 (23:09):
Think we covered all the bases there.

Speaker 2 (23:11):
We accomplished our task today with Batman and Superman or
not Superman but Lex Luthor.

Speaker 1 (23:17):
Who knows check out Batman one.

Speaker 2 (23:20):
Absolutely, so I'll do that thing all right. Yeah, you
can find us at that comic podcast dot com and

Speaker 3 (24:07):
But I think it's I want to say, September twenty
seventh Local Comic Shop Day that's happening all across the country.
I'll be at Captain Blue hen and Newark, Delaware, but
check out your local comic shop. It's all about supporting
the community and just comics in general, and it's sort
of the new thing we're celebrating outside of Free Combook
Day a little bit later in the year. So that's

(24:28):
the twenty seventh of September.

Speaker 2 (24:31):
Love it fantastic and Lance, I know we have some
things in the works with some magic the gathering content
that we're kind of putting together. I know you and
Mente are all over that, and features are all over
that card collecting game.

Speaker 4 (24:50):
It's going to be interesting. I mean, there's a lot
of great and a lot of bad, but it's so
polar that we'll see.

Speaker 2 (24:58):
Yeah, I mean, as soon as the Marvel stuff came out,
or is coming out for that brand. It kind of
went right into our wheelhouse here, so as long as
it's comics, we can cover it. So heck yeah, great
on that note again on mushco and we're going to
see you next time.

Speaker 1 (25:16):

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
