Speaker 1 (00:01):
What a do go over the world.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
It is your girl, the one. I'm only Ash Brown
and this is the Ash said It show over two
thousand episodes, half a million streams around the world. None
of this is possible without you, guys, So I thank
you so so very much. Today my guest is a
returning guest, one of my favorite people. We've got Katie
(00:26):
Campbell from Red Rover. Hey Katie, Hey Ash, and right
back at you.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
This is I always love talking to you. I am.
I'm super gladed to be back again.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Awesome, Awesome Katie. So for people that maybe didn't capture
last feature on the show, give them a little bit
of a description of what Red Rover is and some
of the programs.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
Yeah. Absolutely So. We are a national animal welfare nonprofit.
We are based in Sacramento, California, but again we do
work all over the US and even a little bit
in Canada. You know, we have one program that we
kind of call the Right Cross or Animals. So it's
a Red Rover Responders Programs to volunteer program where we
(01:14):
help provide emergency care or daily care for animals displaced
the martial disasters. I think we'll talk a little bit
more about that today, so I'll breeze through that one
really quickly. We also have our Red Rover Relief programs,
so that's where we're helping provide some emergency veterinary care
for animals, and it's also where all of our domestic
(01:37):
violence work lives. And then finally, we have our Red
Rover Readers program and it truly is all about teaching
kids about kindness, compassion and empathy for animals and people
through children's books. So that's Red Rover in a very
small nutshell.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Yes, yes, amazing, just great, amazing products just for the community.
And you know, starting and young. You know, we gotta
start off with the kiddies, you know, and get them
excited and get them knowledgeable about you know, the responsibility
of having a pet and taking care of our community.
So it's a huge, huge thing.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
Yeah, absolutely, yes, And.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
You mentioned the Red Rovers Responders program and helping to
shelter animals rescued from natural disasters. And the twentieth anniversary
of Hurricane Katrina is next month, which it still has
my head spinning. I can't even believe it's been twenty years.
But how did Red Rover assist in the aftermath of
(02:39):
that disaster.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
Yeah, I'm rither with you. I can't believe it's been
twenty years. It's really wild, wild to think about it was.
You know, the Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rina really were
game changers for how we as a country know we
need to respect on to natural disasters, you know, and
really recognizing that human animal bond and understanding that people
(03:07):
aren't going to leave if they can't take their pets
with them. And we had more than four hundred volunteers.
I think there were fifteen veninarians included in that, and
we cared for twenty one hundred animals and six locations
across Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. So this was just it
(03:28):
was a huge response for us, and you know, as
I said, it really was just a game changer for
how we respond to natural disasters here in the US.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Definitely was Now, if someone is interested in becoming a
Red Rover responder, what is that process?
Speaker 3 (03:47):
Like, Oh, yeah, this is this is one of the
most important things, right, you know, we are always looking
for more volunteers. It's a really really easy process. You
just have to hop online do the training. You do
it online is go at your own pace. It's completely free.
You can get it done in just a few short hours,
(04:08):
you know, roughly between four and six hours. So all
you have to do is go to RedRover dot org
slash Join Responders and you get all of the information
about that free online training. But we also have a
webinar coming up on August the six to discuss pet
disaster preparedness with our Director of Field Services, that Scammy
(04:31):
and I know that's just going to talk a little
bit about that free online training at that webinar as well.
But you know, it's obviously really important for us that
we be able to respond to natural disasters, but we
also want to make sure that we do our best
to support pet parents and being prepared ahead of time
(04:51):
so they know what to do when those disasters happen.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Yeah, it's super important to have some kind of plan.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
In place, you know, So I think that's a really
big part of it, absolutely.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Absolutely, and having that go bag ready to go, having
your pet supplies, you know, having those things that can
help you identify your pets should you get separated. Yeah,
So we have a lot of information on the website
as well about how to be prepared for those.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
Disasters, definitely.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Now I know what Robert does a lot to help
domestic violence survivors and their pets to escape situations. October
is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Do you have any special
plans or any special programs people should be looking out for.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
Yeah, a wonderful question. We're we're gearing up.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
We are.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
We are in the throes of planning for everything. It's
going to be a busy month for us. We're very
excited about it. Everything is going to kick off for
us on September the thirtieth. We're going to be hosting
a virtual discussion, a panel discussion with speakers from PURINA,
the National Organization for Victim Advocacy, Domestic Shelters dot org,
(06:09):
and I think we're even going to have a survivor
joining us as well and just talking about the importance
of recognizing pets in domestic violence on a national level.
So that kind of kicks things off for us, and
then we head into the month of October itself. We're
still working out some of the details, but we'll be
sure to post it on the website. But we're going
(06:30):
to have a variety of presentations, webinars, discussions throughout the months,
just really really focusing in on not just the importance
of this kind of work keeping pets and people together,
but also how to do it. You know, we know
that there is some support that we can provide around
that process of how do you actually create about housing program.
(06:53):
So we're going to have a lot of information throughout
the month of October.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
That's the plan.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Now, is there anything new with the Purple Lease Project
partnership with Purinas.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
Yeah, yeah, So I'm excited to share that I actually
just wrapped up a semestic violent shelter build in Cincinnati, Ohio,
just last week. So I was out there with a
team of Responders volunteers. So not only do our Responders
volunteers go out and support in natural disasters, but on
occasion they can actually come with us and help us
(07:30):
create these pet frim the spaces at semestic violent shelters.
And we had some of the crew from Purina the
Purple Leaf Project come and join us and do a
lot of hard work. If you haven't checked out our
social pages, definitely go go check it out. You'll see
some of the hard work that we were doing. So
that's pretty exciting and I always love when Purina can join us.
(07:53):
But the really cool thing that's happening now until the
end of the year is that there's a five hundred
thousand dollars match run the Purple Leash Project until the
end of the year, So Purina will match one hundred
percent of donations make a red rover and support of
the Purple Leash Project up to that five hundred thousand
(08:15):
through December thirty first, twenty twenty five. Wow.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
That is incredible.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
Kudos kudos to everyone that that you know, helped to
spearhead that to get that to where it needs to be,
Like that's definitely needed and absolutely just an incredible initiative.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's it's it's really really uh you know,
I think it's been a I think a real game
changer for us in our gmectic violence work. You know,
obviously they're helping to fund some of the actual shelter bills,
which is amazing, but you know, I just think about
the amazing work that Purple Leash Project has helped us
accomplish just to get the word out and in particular
(08:58):
to get the word out to survivors as well, you know,
letting them know like, hey, it's okay, to be concerned
about your pet, you know, when you're thinking about leaving
in a future, and you know, to also help survivors
know that there are resources available, because we know so
many of them don't know that housing programs exist.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Right, Right, that's a really big part of it. Now,
if a domestic violent shelter wants to become pet friendly,
what are some of the key things that they need
to consider?
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Yeah, yeah, it's a great question. And you know, I
kind of mentioned it earlier that you know, it's wonderful
that we get the grant funding, right, you know that
we give that funding to help shelters become pet friendly.
But we know it's a hard process. We know it
can be a little bit scary, and so we co
created something called that Don't Forget the Pets Collaborative Project
(09:49):
with our partners at Greater Great Charities, and it's free training.
We do it in person. We're going to be in
Connecticut I think next month, and I think we've got
a couple others that are hopefully going to be coming
online soon. So we do it in person. But we
also launched our brand new go at your Own paced
virtual version as well, and so you can go through
(10:13):
the training there it's all free and then after you
go through the training and you feel like you want
that one on one support, we do that as well.
So free coaching, free technical assistant, and super easy to
sign up for it. The team's going to work with
you through that process, everything from who your cooperative partner
is going to be, you know, how do you design
(10:34):
your space physically, what policies and procedures do you pull together,
how do you fundraise for it? We really really try
and support from you know, step one to step you know,
whatever number you're going to be on. Yeah, we we
love walking that journey, journey with folks. And you know,
I would say the number one thing that I would
(10:54):
say to anybody listening to this if you're thinking about
or you know, want to share or that tidget of
information with a local shelter organization about becoming pet friendly,
number one thing is you've got to collaborate. You don't
have to do this on your own. You know, I
think that truly is my number one piece of advice
(11:16):
for anybody, is you don't have to do it alone
on your community.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
That makes so much sense because like you said, you know,
everyone's got different resources a lot of to them, and
the more we can collaborate together.
Speaker 1 (11:29):
We can accomplish so much more. We really can't.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
Oh my gosh, we really we.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
Really really can.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
What's what's the old thing? Teamwork makes the dream work.
It's true.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
It's so true, it is It's definitely definitely true.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Well, you guys are always busy over there at Red Rover, Katie,
So kudos to you and the team for making these
things a reality. Is there anything else in the works
that maybe we can talk about that? Maybe maybe the
ink hasn't dried quite yet, Katie, any any little tidbits
of secrets we can share?
Speaker 1 (12:07):
Maybe possibly?
Speaker 3 (12:10):
I love it. I love it all right, so I'll
give I'll give a super sweet peak. Our PR team
doesn't even know I'm about to give this yet, so
super hot off the press.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
Red Rover is going to be launching a virtual storefront soon.
Uh so yeah, So if you want some of that
very cool flag, uh you know, maybe a T shirt
for you and then a maybe a dog bandana, uh,
you know, for for your your lovely dogs. We may
(12:44):
be we may have that opportunity coming up. Everything we
are hoping by the end of the summer, So very
very excited about the storefront. I think it's gonna I
think it's gonna be great. We have some great flags,
so I'm looking forward to, you know, to sharing it
with the world.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
Yes, that is incredible news, Katie.
Speaker 2 (13:03):
Oh my gosh, Well, you know you've got to come back.
We have to have you back to talk about all
of the swag for all of the fur babies and
the parents.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
Absolutely absolutely, I cannot wait to come back and share
about it. You know, we're gonna we're gonna start a
little small and then we're just really gonna like see
where it goes. I'm just super super excited about it.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
Everybody likes good swag, yeah, yes, and then it's just
doing so much good in so many different communities. So
you guys keep up doing all of the great work
that you have done, you're working on, you're collaborating with.
It all makes a difference. So kudos to you and
the whole team. And it takes a lot.
Speaker 3 (13:48):
Oh my gosh, thanks definitely, thank you know, well, you know,
it certainly does. It takes a lot. It takes a
lot of a lot of folks, but it also like
truly takes you know, someone like you, Ash who wants
to have these conversations with us and just help for
the word. So you know, it really is, it's all
(14:11):
of us.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
It takes all of us, for sure, it absolutely does.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
And Teddy let everyone know if they want to get
some information or they need to go ahead and sign
up and become a digital responder.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
Where do they need to go?
Speaker 3 (14:23):
Yes, all you need to do is go to the
website RedRover dot org. You'll get all of the information there,
from how to become a responders volunteer to how to
sign up for some of our upcoming workshops and events.
We've got some exciting one. I have a meet and
greet happening on July thirtieth. We also have an estate
(14:46):
and planning a trust planning webinar. We've got some really
really cool guest presentations coming up with our don't forget
the peest team. There is as you said, there is
always something happening with at red Rover and yeah, check
out the website. Also be sure to go to our
socials RedRover dot org. Yeah, and that's how you get
(15:10):
all the information.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
Sounds like the plan Katie.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
Again, it's always a pleasure having you on love, your energy.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
You are the bad always look forward to this conversation,
and so I we're going to have another one.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
It just happened. Absolutely, I mean we're putting that into
the universe. It's happening.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
I am so excited about the storefront and all the
things that you guys are going to have in there.
So we definitely that's an exclusive. She's bringing it here
first people.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
Yep, yep. Maybe loop of announcement for your for your audience, definitely.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
But I thank each and every one of you guys
for all of your love and support.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
Keeping in mind.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
Anyone to tell you that you can't do what you
want to do, you look them square in the face,
you tell them, don't believe me. Just watch watch what
I do. Watch me make it happen, Watch me make history.
That's what we're doing this for the history books. Social
media is nice, but real life is so much better.
Until next time, you guys,
