In this episode of Walking on Feathers, Medium Kareen interviews Jillian, as she shares her near-death experience and the angelic power that saved her. Jillian’s story begins with a Sea Turtle conservation effort in Bali and ends with her increased awareness of and belief in Spirit, higher powers, and guardian angels.

While Jillian shares the details of how she and her friend were saved from being caught in the undertow and sliced by rocks off the beach in Bali, one detail alludes the story: The face of the strong figure who pulled her up from the water to save her life. Medium Kareen and Jillian determine this figure’s angelic presence. Despite the ensuing trauma from hanging onto life by a thread, Jillian has since experienced visions and become connected to the spiritual realm through mediumship. She has a renewed sense of security knowing that Spirit surrounds us.

Medium Kareen invites anyone who has had a near-death experience or experience with an angel or spirit to email her at mediumkareen@gmail.com detailing that experience to be considered for a podcast interview.

“We all get used to the everyday human experience, and I feel like it helps people feel more hopeful knowing that angels do exist.”

(00:10):
Hi, everyone, Welcome to thisweek's episode of Walking on Feathers. I
have Jillian here with me. Hi, guys, Gillian is going to tell
us all about her near death experience. So this happened in twenty eighteen,
Yes it did, and you weretraveling and you're in Bali correct. I

(00:31):
was actually there for a volunteer programthat I signed up after college. What
was the volunteer program? It wasyou can pick like whatever you want to
do, and I really love likethe ocean and I love animals, so
I picked Sea Turtle Conservation. Soyeah, it's pretty awesome. And so

(00:53):
I picked out and I wanted togo to a country that I've never been
before. So how long were yousupposed to be there? For? Weeks?
Okay? So can you tell everyonewhat happened the day of Yes,
so we actually started on a mainisland, and then the next week we
go to like Newsapanita, which islike a sister island, and from there

(01:19):
we had like a day off andthey let us go to a beach.
Okay, did you know anyone orwere you there by yourself? I was
there by myself, but I actuallyended up meeting who I think is like
my soul sister there. I huggedher and it was like all the lifetimes
like I've known her and we werestill we talk every day still. That's
really cool. It's like the universeliterally put her in my path for a

(01:42):
reason. Her and another girl, like we just all clicked really well,
where were they from? I'm justcurious. So I'm actually from Illinois,
she my best one of my bestfriends is from Colorado, and then the
other one is from Boston. Okay, so all United States. Yeah,
but we did meet people from allover and it's crazy because one of the

(02:07):
girls said, now you know likethree percent of the population. Do you
know someone that knows someone that knowssomebody? Yeah, it was really cool.
So we Actually the trip to thebeach was insane. They put you
in like an old school like truckthat basically it's just a tarp over the

(02:27):
back and like there's like no doorsor anything, and we're going on like
the side of like a mountain andit's like super tight, like super close.
So it's terrifying. So many peopleget sick on the way. They're
like throwing up, yeah, justbecause like it was bumpy, like there's
no doors or anything. And thenwe get to the beach and my friend

(02:51):
not my friend from Boston, herand I agreed like, oh, let's
go. There's like an island, and we're like, let's go swimming and
see like where we get. Andso as we were swimming, we were
not even far out at all,and we got swept up by an undertow.
Okay, what was the weather like? Was it a normal day?

(03:13):
Yeah? It was like the weatherthe water wasn't choppy. It was a
little cloudy, but it wasn't likeit was amazing. Yeah, okay.
And then as we like were swimming, all of a sudden, we realized
like we could not move, likewe were stuck. The easiest way I
can explain it is like being inthe center of a fourway intersection and cars

(03:37):
are coming at you and you cannotmove, Like no matter what you did,
you were just stuck. Oh mygosh, how long were you stuck
there before? Who started to freakout first? Honestly I think my friend
did, just because I was alifeguard. It was my first job,

(03:58):
was the lifeguard. So I waslike, Okay, I'm a really good
swimmer, Like I know what todo. I've been in beaches. But
then the more and more we gotlike couldn't move. I was starting to
panic, like, Okay, thisis not good. So where's everyone else?
Are there people on the beach thatknew that you went into the ocean?

(04:18):
Yeah, my friend from Colorado, she was like on the beach and
all the other people that we werewith, they were on the beach,
and my friend said that they couldsee us and we were fine, and
then the next moment they couldn't seeus at all, and she was like
panicking. And so then I toldmy friend, like lay on your back
and just try kicking on your back, because safe energy where you can.

(04:42):
And I just remember I was superclose with my grandmother before she passed,
and I remember like looking up prayingto like my grandfather like I could see
I remember seeing this guy, andI was like, let me see my
grandma one more time, like don'tlet me go out of this world like
this, like I need to seeher one more time. And my friend
we were still like at this point, we were just exhausted, and I

(05:04):
was like, there's a rock overthere, like it was all there was
like ocean, and then the sideit was like all like rocks and everything,
and so I said, swim tothe rock because if anything, like
I'd rather get my head knocked outthan just drown and not be able to
catch your breath. Right, So, how long were you guys treading water

(05:28):
before you went to the rock.At least fifteen to twenty minutes? Oh
my god, that's a long time. Yeah, it seems like a lifetime.
Were you guys just staring at eachother, like looking at the panic
in each other's eyes? Yeah, that's how I picture it. Yeah,
it was terrifying. And as wewere like going to the rock, there

(05:51):
was a boat that came by uswith like people on it, and we
were like screaming like help us,like help us, like like we're drowning,
and they just kept going. Theylike waved us and kept going.
So they clearly couldn't hear us orsee the panic in our like fasis because
they weren't close enough, but theywere like within like we could see them.

(06:13):
So that was absolutely terrifying just tosee like, oh hope and then
just get like ripped away. Soyou guys got to the rock and within
a couple of minutes that boat cameYeah okay, yeah, yeah, you
got your hope stuff. You're like, we're gonna be good. We're gonna
be good, and then now whatthe fuck are we gonna do? Yeah?
Pretty much. And then my friendripped onto the rock and it's filled
with like seashells. I'm not exactlysure like what was on it, but

(06:39):
it was sharp, yes, razorsharp, and I was like just grab
it. I was like, grabit like as hard as you can.
And the moment as we were grabbingit, we both got ripped off.
And so I was like ripped offbecause of the waves. Yes, okay,
so when you guys got in thewater, it was a little bit
choppy. So do you feel likeit got worse as you are spreading water?

(07:02):
Yeah, definitely. It's just likeall of a sudden, it just
changed wow, out of nowhere. It was like fine, and then it
was terrible. So we both getripped off, and my friend we both
swim back. We get on andI was like rip it as hard as
you possibly can. Like we couldsee like as I was holding the rock,

(07:23):
I could see my friend on thebeach and all of them. Like
my friend was like panicking, likescreaming, like she couldn't see us,
and she at this point could notsee us like where we were. So
the girl on the beach was screaming, yes, could you see her doing
that? Yeah? Okay? Sothen were you hopeful though, like knowing

(07:43):
that she was freaking out and hopefullysomebody would come help you. Honestly,
I thought I was going to die, so okay, No, I literally
I was like just holding on andI was like, okay, like I
guess, like this is it,like if you're gonna take me, at
least, like let my friend live, because I was just like at the
point where I was like, okay, like if one of us is going

(08:05):
to survive, like just let myfriend live, like I'll be okay,
Like, oh my god. Andso we got ripped off again after my
friend got ripped off actually the secondtime from the rock, and I was
still holding on. And that wasthe scariest I think I moment in the
entire thing was because my back wasto her, so I couldn't see where

(08:28):
she was. I couldn't see likeif anybody was coming to help us,
and like in that moment, Ihad to make this decision like save her
and possibly die or hold onto thisrock. And she dies and so like
as I went to turn to likejump in the water to get her,
I saw like a fisherman boat andit's like the banana boats where it has

(08:50):
like the long like sides and thenthe middle. I don't know how to
explain it correctly. I kind oflike a canoe, yes, like long
like a canoe. Yeah, okay, she was getting pulled up by this
boat, and I like, Iwas instantly like oh my God, and
God like she's okay. But thenlike I was like, you need to

(09:13):
jump and swim, and I waslike I physically can't do it, like
the amount of tiredness, like exhaustion, like mental exhaustion that went into it.
I was like, I I can'tdo this. And then I literally
told myself. I was like, you better suck it up, like you're

(09:33):
either gonna die on this rock oryou're gonna swim and get saved, like
at least try to get saved. How far was the boat it was they
couldn't get too close to the rocks. It was probably twenty feet like maybe
further, I'm not sure. Okay, well, I want to backpedal just
a little bit. So you guys, before the boat came, you were

(09:56):
were you making peace with like thisis the way that I'm gonna die?
Yeah, what was that like?At first? Like I said, like
I was not accepting like at all, because I was I want to see
my grandma, I want to seemy family, like don't let me die.
And then as I like came tolike, okay, I'm gonna die,

(10:18):
like I love the It's weird. It sounds like I love the water.
I grew up in the water, like I love the ocean. I
still love the ocean. That Iwas like, okay, like at least
make it quick, like don't makeme suffer. So you weren't panicking.
There was like a peacefulness that overcameyou or like acceptance. Yeah, I

(10:41):
panicked for sure, like holding ontothe rock, and it was like I
don't even know how to fully explain, like how like I not gonna lie.
I was very panicked. But whenI was holding onto the rock,
like it was sharp and it wasbasically felt like knives like we're slicing into
like I are still like all overmy body like when I get tanned,

(11:03):
you can see them. And Ihave one in my leg that I probably
should have got stitches, but Ididn't oh my god, battle wounds.
Yeah, but it was I afterI like fully accepted that I was just
gonna that I was. That wasit. I was like, okay,
but I think the hardest fully, the hardest part was deciding, like having

(11:24):
to make the decision between saving yourselfand saving someone else. Yeah, because
as selfish as it sounds, like, you want to live, but like
I want to save this other person, Like I have the mindset in life
like I'm going to help other people. Yeah, So that was really hard.
But my friend was fine, that'sincredible. So you're like making peace

(11:48):
with Okay, I'm choosing her. You're about to get off the rock,
and then you see a boat that'ssaving her. That's incredible. Yeah.
And before all of this, sothere was only that one other boat that
came by, correct, and thisboat came and it was like they knew
that you guys were needed help, and it just happened out of the blue,

(12:09):
out of nowhere, out of nowhere. We I did not see it
coming at all, Like it wasthe point like my back was behind like
my back was facing the ocean andI was facing more of like the shore,
so I couldn't see anything. Somy friend could see it, but
she could only see it when itwas like picking her up. So she

(12:30):
gets knocked off the rock and thenmagically there's a boat there to save her.
Yes, that's insane. Yeah. And the more insane part about it
is that finally when I got tothe boat, like this person, I
don't know how they were strong enoughliterally like lifted me up, like how
you lift a toddler up, Likejust lifted me up, put me on

(12:52):
the boat. I never saw thisperson's face. My friend never saw this
person's face. Okay, wait, explain that. How did do you not
see their face? I saw there'stwo guys on the boat. One guy
definitely saw he was driving, butthe person that lifted us up, I
did not see his face at all. Like I don't know if it was
because I was in pure panic thatlike I was going to die, and

(13:15):
I wasn't paying attention to him.I was more paying attention to my friend.
And then I asked my friend, like, and then he was facing
like he was looking at the oceanwhen the driver was like driving, so
drivers facing forward, he's facing theocean back to us. So I never
saw his face. And then youget on the boat and it's like a

(13:39):
crime scene because we're both just filledwith blood and it's just like everywhere,
and we're crying and we're our adrenalineis just like raging at this point,
like I was shaking, Like Iwas just crying with my friend because we
were about to die, and like, how does this happened? Like how

(14:00):
does someone save us when you didn'tsee the boat coming. You only see
it when it picks you up.You don't see the person's face. And
after like everything happened, my frienddid research and found like people posted on
Facebook and the entire island talked aboutthis, and not one person got a
picture of that person's face. Shutup. I just got the chills.

(14:26):
Okay, so you guys get inthe boat and it's a crime scene.
So they take you back and arethey calling you down? Are they talking
to you? Honestly, not reallybecause there was just a language barrier.
Well, I think one guy waslike, it's going to be okay.
And we got to the island andI just saw my friend from Colorado's rinting

(14:46):
across like the sand and all ofthese people, like one person because I
was cut up really bad and Ihurt my wrist because I hit it on
the rock when we got like rippedoff, and it's crazy as my friends
like get water so we can likeclean her cuts, and the people were
like, you have to pay forthat. My friend's like, I'll give
you whatever money, it's fine,Like just give me a dank bottle of

(15:09):
water. But she completely understands, like it's not. We have so many
resources that we could just be like, here, take this water, like
we're on a volunteer trip, likeit's the third world country. They don't
just willingly give you water without havingto pay for it. And this guy,

(15:30):
I don't know what was going throughhis mind, but he was just
like laughing. He was like you'regonna be okay, Like you're gonna be
okay and laughing and I I'm neverreally mean. And I looked up at
this guys like, if you laughat me one more time, I'm going
to punch you in the face.Yeah, you're like, I am still
in the middle of processing the factthat I almost passed away. Now I'm

(15:52):
freaking out about all these cuts allover my body and not being close to
home at all. Do you rememberhow you felt in that take away?
The guy laughing. But with whenthe guy lifted you up, do you
do you remember how you felt asense of relief just like a whole It's

(16:12):
kind of like a layer just likelifted off of you, Like just a
sense of like Okay, I canfinally trust that I'm gonna be okay.
Because my body was in like survivalmode. It was like do whatever you
have to do to survive, andthen finally when I got lifted up,
it was like, okay, Ican breathe. It feels like the reason

(16:36):
why I'm asking is because as you'retalking about it, it feels like angelic
and unexplainable. So you guys getback to the shore and then they call,
do you guys end up? Go? You went to the hospital?
Right? No? I didn't.What? Yeah, I know it's crazy.

(16:59):
We Actually I feel bad because Iwe like ruined everybody's trip, like
to the beach because that was likeour day off and we were just wanting
to go in the water and endedup turning to that. But but we
actually my friend from Colorado walked withme and just because of all the adrenaline,
like I started throwing up, LikeI was just sitting there like like

(17:23):
dry being throwing up, like weget back into this truck. Thing that
is horrible. Yeah, we haveto make the trip back, and literally
everybody is just like it seems likeeverybody was more of like holy crap,
I can't believe that happened. Inshock and my friend, my friend from

(17:48):
Colorado, luckily the doors in theback open, and there was this mom
and this girl on a scooter andthey were getting really close to like our
truck, and my friends like backup and they're not getting a hint,
and my friend ended up throwing upin the back and they like finally backed
up and they're like we get it, we get it. But it was

(18:11):
just a hot mess. What afucking shit show. So wait are you
guys in the back of the truckand blood's just everywhere. Yeah, we
just like tried to like hold likethe blood, and I think we got
like paper towels. And then whenI got back to the place we were
staying at, they ended up justtaking like bottles of iodine and just pouring

(18:33):
it on my cuts, which like, in hindsight, like thankfully they did
that because it cleans the wounds, right. But I only had one like
full day after that. And Iended up. I was like, I'm
done, Like I need to gohome. I just went through like pure

(18:53):
panic and almost dighed. And BALIis thirteen hours ahead of us. So
my friend from Colorado, I feelso bad. She had to call my
dad and let him know like whatalmost happened. And she called my now
husband, who was my boyfriend atthe time, and she called him and

(19:15):
was like she almost died, likewe're trying to get her on a first
flight home and he was just inpure panic, like he's like, there's
literally nothing I can do. I'mon the other side of the world.
He's like, but whatever you needto do, just do it, like,
don't worry about money, just gether home. And I ended up
getting to the airport and all theflights were sold out, like they don't

(19:40):
like give you flights, like howyou can do here, and they shut
down the airport and so we stayedat a hotel with my friend and I
and I was like can I waslike, I just need a shower,
like I because this whole time, like we didn't shower. We packed as
fast as we could, like andreally, let's go, like it's probably
now that I look at it,was probably such a dramatic way to leave,

(20:03):
but like I could have stayed andjust like kept my flight, but
I just wanted to get home.Well you're still in fight or flight mode
and you're freaking out and you justwant your mommy. Yeah, pretty much.
And I hurt my wrist and Ithought it was broke because the way
that like I hit it, Icouldn't move it. And we put it.
We took pants and we made itas like a sling to hold my

(20:26):
arm up. And we finally gota flight and it was like a ten
hour like wait. And so Ilike slept for I don't know how many
hours, and I'm sure everybody aroundme, Like I know, people around
me were looking at me like whatdid you go through? Because I looked
like a hot mess because you're allsliced up? How many cuts do you

(20:48):
think you had? At least ten? Yeah? Yeah, okay, go
going back to the boat. Obviouslyyou thanked the guys. Did they just
disappear? Like what happened to theboat that helped? You? Have no
idea? That's crazy. So thenafter you guys fly back home, how
did you find out that everyone onvalley was like this is crazy. We

(21:12):
don't know, we've never seen thisguy before. Wow, like he can
you run us through that? Yeah? So my friend it was a couple
of weeks later. I can rememberbecause it was like significant. She had
messaged me. I was actually goingto our local crystal shop and I got
I parked, and she sent methe articles and it was just like saying,

(21:33):
like be careful, like in thewater. This happened two two girls,
and there was pictures of the incident, but it was just like the
same thing. Like I explained, one guy was facing us and the other
guy was facing the ocean. Thatis so weird. Yeah, that instant
like that made me believe in guardianangels. I fully was like, there

(21:57):
is no way that that boat madeit in the time that I did.
We didn't see it coming. Thatperson was like ungodly like strength, right,
I could just like pick someone upout of the water. And I
never saw the person's face, Noone did. That's crazy that no one

(22:18):
saw his face. Yeah, sothat was my next question. So you
believe that it was an angel thatcame absolutely? Yeah. So Jillian had
told me the story. I forgothow it came up. I think we
were doing a one on one Yes. Anyways, it I just felt like
I love hearing stories like this becausewe all get I don't know, used

(22:41):
to the everyday human experience, andI feel like it helps people feel more
hopeful knowing that angels do exist.Have you had dreams about him or of
the experience. Yes, So afterI got home, I actually went home
and I wasn't feeling good when Igot home, and so I went to

(23:03):
like the emergency room. My husbandwas like, you can either go to
the hospital and go to the emergencylike emergency room, or like a clinic.
I was like, I'll just goto a clinic. I don't want
to go. And I did findout that when we got sick in Bali
because of food, and when wewent I found out that we paid like

(23:26):
eight hundred dollars for toms. Soyeah, that sucked when we got home
because she was like, yeah, these are just toms. I was like,
you gotta be kidding me. ButI ended up getting sick like after
that, like really sick, andI was hospitalized for a week and they
couldn't figure out what it was,like They're just like, it's a virus,
we don't know what it is,but I was really sick, like

(23:48):
throwing up like every five minutes, and that whole time in the hospital,
I would wake up in a panic, just like such trauma, like thinking
I'm drowning or at the time Mohannacame out, or that's when we watched
it, and it was like oneof those movies that I could watch and
fall asleep too, and it waslike soothing. Well, there's a part

(24:11):
in Mohana where she's drowning, andwhen I was sleeping like that sound was
like right next to me because Iwas in a hospital, and I woke
up and I was like terrified, like freaking out. So it took a
really long time for me to eventrust getting in the ocean. How long
do you think it took probably likeat least a year for me to get

(24:33):
into the ocean. That's not bad, no, no, But I could
not be submerged, like I couldn'tgo under I couldn't shower for a really
long time. Oh my gosh,I could shower, I just couldn't like
fully like submerge like my face underwater. Like I could wash my hair and
like everything and be fine. Butas soon as I got too close to

(24:56):
where like I couldn't breathe. Istarted panicking. And then this summer last
summer, actually I went on vacationwith my family in Tennessee and we were
like right on the water and mylittle cousin, he wasn't being mean or
anything, flipped me on an innertube when we were just like hanging out,
and instantly I went into it.I had a panic attack. Like

(25:21):
I had to like climb onto theboat and I just had like straight panic
attack. I mean, I feellike that makes sense though, because I
feel like the water on your facereminds you of that moment. It brings
you back to that moment. Yeah, were you spiritual or did you believe
in angels before all of this happened, or did you have this experience and

(25:41):
then you were it became like moreinquisitive or can you just share what your
beliefs were and then how it changedthem? Yes, So I believe in
spirit and I believed like there waslike a higher power, but I never
like dug like deep into it.And then after this, when I like

(26:04):
remember like looking up and just liketalking to my grandpa and like being like,
let me see my grandma one moretime. After that, and then
especially with the experience with a guy, just because his presence felt different too,
like it didn't feel like like nowthat I know because I'm practicing,
it wasn't human energy. So it'sdefinitely evolved. And because of like this

(26:30):
whole experience, I've dug like moredeep into like going to drum circles,
are going to singing bowls. Andthere's actually one person here that does like
an ocean of devotion, so it'slike ocean sounds. And the craziest thing
happened. It was so cool.He has like this drum and when he

(26:52):
moves it, you can hear likethe wind, the rain, ocean just
depends on like what you hear. And I was meditating and I was laying
down and he came over me.And my grandma has passed since this happened,
and as I was meditating, shecame. I was on the beach
of Bali where this happened, LikeI was staring like at the water,

(27:15):
going into the water. She camenext to me and grabbed my hand and
was like, let's do this together. And ever since, like I've done
that, like I've just been waymore at peace with the water too.
Wait, so you guys really didthat before she passed away or was that
a vision that you had? Itwas a vision that I had. Okay,
so you had that vision when hewas doing his shaman Okay, that's

(27:40):
incredible. Yeah, it's like Mawanabecause how the grandmother comes and she's a
seam ray. I know, Icry every time in Mawana. I love
that movie. Is there anything elseyou want to share? Just that?
I think like the whole experience truly, it was terrifying and everything was super

(28:02):
like traumatic, but now it givesme a sense of like, I really
after that, I changed the wayI looked at life. It was more
instead of just like clipping, oh, nothing can happen to me, like
I'm young and you know, andnow I'm like, Okay, things can
happen, but I just have toembrace like what I have today. Yeah,

(28:23):
because things can happen, but likespirits all around us, and I
feel like, if it's not yourtime, it's not your time. I
thought it was my time, butit wasn't. Yeah. I feel like
that kind of provides a sense ofsecurity and safety, knowing like, of
course you're going to make good decisions, but just having that knowing that they

(28:47):
got your back. Yeah, andI kind of deep after like near death
experiences guardian angels Like after that,I was like, I want to know
all the things right, which isdefinitely tash. Do you want to your
spiritual journey now? So Jillian's inhas been practicing mediumship and you're pretty incredible.

(29:07):
Yes. Yeah, So I'm thankyou for sharing your story. The
reason why I wanted her to shareis because I feel like it helps everyone
just feel closer to angels whenever anyoneshares the story of a near death experience
or an experience with an angel. So thank you so so much for sharing.
Thank you for having me. Iappreciate it. Yeah, all right,

(29:32):
guys, I hope this episode helpedto bring some peace and clarity and

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
