(01:26):
And you know we're back in studioSlash. You know, Nick's garage,
my my desk, and you know, hey, Giants Live is around
the corner. It's coming up fasterand faster the more. Yeah, exactly
it. It's definitely right there. And it's like it's exciting because, like
(01:48):
I said, Las Vegas, NewOrleans Arena, let's just talk about that,
Like that's right there itself is alegendary stage. Legendary there's I watched
Jake Cutler beat Ronni Coleman in there, so that was. That was pretty
crazy. So yeah, there's likea lot of legendary stuff that's going on
in that place. That's they hadthe hockey team and there, they had
(02:14):
a lot of stuff before the GoldenKnights, so it was it was it's
a pretty amazing arena. And theseats are great, the the boxes are
great. It's it's just a neatplace to to go see a show and
stuff like that. The concerts.I saw Jane's Addiction there, I saw
(02:34):
all kinds of stuff there. Soit's it's it's a pretty cool arena.
I like it. And it's gonnabe amazing to watch those guys go up
and go after the mythical you know, eleven oh five, you know that's
it, that is or five ohfive and kilos so or something like that,
eleven twelve. So yeah, it'sgoing to be pretty exciting. You
(02:59):
know what. One of the thingsthat I always seemed to notice every time
we go to a strong man event, it's the hotels and the you know,
like the places, you know, the free breakfast, all this stuff.
But we're we're going to Vegas. All it's gonna be in Vegas.
And even when we went to aWorld strong Span, none of the businesses
were truly prepared for how much foodwas about to be consumed or sold.
(03:22):
And it's I don't think problem exactly, That's what I'm saying. That's what
I'm saying that. So the food, it's a little cleaner for the Olympia,
So oh yeah, no, justjust a little cleaner. But the
thing is is the vault you knowwhat it like, Uh, you couldn't
have like an event like this,Like when we were at World strong Span
(03:46):
last year in Myrtle Beach, theplaces were like, oh my god.
We they weren't ready for the amountof food to be eaten, so like
they were running low on supplies. But like, good thing about Vegas is
it's constantly supplied, so they're goingto be more than ready because like I
said, like a you know,a strong man's eating about twice the amount
of what normal people eating. Soif you have you know a ridiculous number
(04:06):
of people that show up exactly. It's it's just funny because, like I
said, I just remember seeing likethe restaurants, the hotels they scramble because
they're like, oh, we justcan't put out enough food. I'm like,
go because everyone's trying to get readyfor today. Mmmm. Yeah,
it's gonna be fun to watch. So it's gonna be really neat to see.
(04:27):
You know what giants brings to thisand it's I'm so excited for this.
I you know, my olin regretis is yeah I'm retired, but
uh, you know it's it's Iwould have loved to compete here. I'm
still gonna go, still gonna hangout, still gonna watch, still gonna
talk to people, hang out, maybe do a thing or two if they
(04:51):
want me to do something. Butit's it's gonna be fantastic. And you
got to get on the tickets.Now. I think they go up for
sale here in another day or two. Oh no, they already went up
for sale. You had the presale. Now the tickets are up for
sale, so like, you know, make sure you guys get your tickets,
get yourself prepared, book a roombook a flight. You know what
(05:12):
I'm saying, drive on through. And the guys who are gonna be around
their approachable. I mean when they'rewalking through the hotel and stuff, go
say hi. I mean, unlessthey're in a direct path to go to
the food or they're in a directpath to get to the competition area,
you can stop them all they're greatguys and say hi and stuff and take
a quick picture with them. Soit's it's pretty cool. I mean,
(05:34):
it's it's it's gonna be me truly. Yeah, yeah, it's gonna be
fun. It's like I said,it's That's the one thing too, is
like the vibe is always upbeat.Everyone's smiling, everyone's happy, everyone's having
a good time. It's loud ashell, and you know what I'm saying,
And it just like I said,if you watch Giants Live, because
(05:55):
like I said that that there fromthat Giants Live is in Europe. Yeah,
and they put on a production it'sit's an actual fireworks show. It's
you know, like it like that'sgonna be too. So it's gonna be
great. And then now OSG justannounced they're gonna be in Wisconsin. That's
it going to I think December sixthto the ninth, so that's gonna be
(06:20):
December sixty the eighth or something likethat. So that's gonna be pretty neat.
And we know they're gonna have acar walk in it. Oh yeah,
already let that one slide, sothat's already let it out. That'll
be neat that that's back in there. So it's it's gonna be neat,
and that'll be easier for everybody toget to with their flights. There will
(06:40):
be a lot of direct flights.Yeah, there, so that'll be that'll
be really neat. I'm looking forwardto that next year as well. Well.
Hopefully there's not too much snow.Uh, it's just yeah, but
it should be okay. Well,at least you won't have to worry about
a hurricane. You know, snowstorms are a little easier to get around.
(07:00):
It's a little bit of a delay, it's not so bad as you
know, eight to ten hours ofthe hurricane blowing through and everything being shut
down for a day day and ahalf. So but I think it's going
to be pretty neat. And Igot family in Rockford and stuff like that,
so it'll it'll be good to beclose to where I was born.
(07:23):
It'll be cool there we go.You know what I'm saying, there's something
I didn't know. You was bornout there in Wisconsin. You know we
probably yeah, Rockford, Illinois. But yeah, oh okay, yeah I
was. I was like, forserver's sake, and I was like,
is Rockford in Wisconsin? But like, apparently not. It's Illinois, but
it's Rockford and Wisconsin are pretty closetogether. I mean, it's a short
(07:46):
drive you get over the border. It's not bad, it's not too bad,
you know. And with that goingon and all the giants live,
you got, like I said,it's all the heavy hitters. You know
what I'm saying. You know eitheryeah, you know, And I was
definitely wished Trey could compete. Butlike I said, he's on the mend.
(08:07):
He seems to be getting a lotbetter just from the videos he's posting.
He's you know, he's already establishingbig weight. Yeah. I think
he just did three sixty five forthree on an axle exactly exactly, not
that long ago. Yeah, that'sthe modern medical hit. A mystery or
miracles happening nowadays, you know whatI'm saying, Like, you know,
(08:28):
it's really getting dialed in. Well, they're learning a lot more about the
repair and how to actually get thetenants to heal and how to get blood
flow through it and stuff like that. So it's a lot of the stuff
they're coming out with now is reallykind of neat. It's gonna just help
when you have an injury, ohyeah, for stuff like that. So
it's it's gonna be cool. It'sgonna be neat to see them go.
(08:50):
And Evan looks like he's gonna beready for the Arnold, so and Evan
will be here as well, soit's, uh, it's gonna be pretty
freaking cool when brothers would be here. So that's gonna be cool. And
I almost want to get them all, get everybody together and then go hit
one of the all you can sushiplaces there now. Yeah, yeah,
(09:13):
they took all of us. Theywould just change the doors, like you
guys are not allowed in here, you know what I'm mean. We get
good advertising if they can feed usall and not run out of food for
real, for real. You know, a limit would probably be established that
day, like oh no, no, no, yeah, I think it's
probably pretty accurate exactly. I thinkwe did. Uh, we had a
(09:39):
small group of strong men. Wasit just four you know, I think
what was it like four hundred orfive hundred rolls? Yeah, it was
about five hundred rolls. Yeah,it was like or five hundred pieces is
when? Yeah, five hundred piecesand exactly. And then they did stop
coming around, you know what I'msaying. They were kind of like that,
(10:01):
damn like whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa whoa.
Yeah that was pretty funny. Yeah, this is not allowed, you
know what I'm saying. Yeah, yeah, but it was definitely that stuff's
pretty good. And then also I'mgoing to have a bench press seminar coming
up at Irontown there we go.So that's going to be pretty cool.
(10:24):
It's March twenty third, if you'reinterested, it'll be here in Vegas at
Iron Thailand, which is a CrossFitgym. But we're going to do a
bench press seminar in there that'll behands on, so we'll go through your
technique with you individually, you know, go through all the steps of you
know, doing what is a goodbench press stuff like that, so and
(10:45):
then ways to train for it andall the assistant stuff to go with it
as well. Not just here's thebench here's your technique. Okay, you're
done. It's going to be trainingall around it, philosophies, ways to
approach your training, stuff like that. So it's gonna be good. It'll
be a lot of fun. Ilove doing. Oh yeah, Now the
sympathizers always you, Like I said, you get a good variety and mix
(11:07):
of people that want to learn somany different things. And well, if
when bench pressing, what's the numberone thing that you always see people like
doing wrong? You know what I'msaying, something that like like that always
sticks at like this is a commonthing that always happens. Well, the
first, the very first thing yougot to do in the bench press to
set your feet and then set yourshoulders. And a lot of people don't
(11:31):
set their feet right and they don'tset their shoulders, and that creates instability
when you're benching and as you bringthe bar down. If you're not stable
with your with your feet and yourshoulders, you're not gonna have a good
base to push from. It's andit all starts with the base that you
push from. And then probably thenext mistake you see your people letting it
(11:52):
sink into their chest you know, don't let the bar sink in. I
mean, it's just that much furtheryou got to push the bar, you
know, and on the bench presspart of the competition wise, the moment
the bar is motionless, you getthe press signal. So if you bring
it then if you bring it in, you let it sink in. The
bar is still going to keep movingtill it hits the bottom and stops moving,
(12:13):
and it's gonna move left and right. Yeah, that much longer before
you get a press signal. Whereasif you bring it down to stop it
right at your chest, you needto get a press signal right away.
So those are a couple of littlethings like straight off to to think about
as you're getting ready to bench.Oh yeah, no, no, that's
definitely yeah, it's definitely interesting becauselike uh, you know, and one
(12:35):
of the things that you always see, like for the majority of people,
like there are a lot of peopledo a blot of block lists or the
like I said, you have theblock, attach the thing or someone's holding
the block for them right right.Well, that that's good with bench pressures
and that type of training, ButI mean, if you're going to bench
raw and you want just pure strength. I it's it's not effective as other
(13:00):
things. It's good for benching inthe shirts because you can touch it down
and get used to coming in thereand then keep pulling off the blocks and
keep lowering the bar down until youcan get down to your chest with the
shirt on. It's very effective withthat, but it also helps for some
parcels. But I mean, reallythere's other ways to get a better overload
with that where you don't have togo as heavy. Well, and here,
(13:22):
what's the accessory. What's the oneother movement besides Actually it's gonna be
a little controversial, but I'm gonnasay dips, heavy dips. You know,
one or two sets of heavy dips, but smart heavy dips are going
(13:43):
to make a big difference in yourlockout, especially if you can get any
kind of an arch It's going tomake a massive difference. And it allows
you to really drive with your tricepsas well as your pecks at the bottom
of the bottom of the lift,so that that really makes a massive difference.
Yeah, I mean definitely. Youslowly increase the weight as you go
(14:05):
as you're doing them. You don't, you know, jump from doing you
know, no weight to you know, one hundred pounds to two hundred pounds.
It's it's a slow progression as well. And you see a lot of
guys get hurt, Oh hey,I did this, no problem, and
then they jump up and throw acouple more plates on. It's like on
(14:26):
the dip belt thing, you know. It's so it's one of those things
where you want to do them heavy, but within reason. So it's be
smart in your training, not justthrow the weight on because you can.
Yeah, you know, gripping thebar is something that is I know is
(14:46):
very vital. But I know,uh, I wish I could remember what
federation. I don't think it wasa w RFP, but they had just
actually changed the rules on the grippingthe bar where you can't you all fingers
have to be wrapped around the baris exactly. That's been around a lot
(15:07):
of federations for a long time. Most you have to have your thumb around
the bar. Yeah, but whenyou when you do that, when you
put yours my hand, when youput your thumb around the bar, you're
almost a way to compensate and almostmake it like you do that is you
almost try to break the bar inyour hands, twisting your hands out as
you're bringing the bar down, andthat'll almost give you the same feeling as
(15:30):
having you know, the false scriptanyway, it's just knowing how to angle
your hands on the bar while you'redoing that, and you know you're you're
trying to bend or break the barand twist it out like this as you're
benching makes a big difference. Andal so get your elbows in as well,
yeah, as you're doing it,which is a big help for bench
Now, like I said, there'sa big difference between bodybuilding and powerlifting,
(15:54):
and especially in benching. Understatement understatementhere, but yeah, I mean when
your bodybuilding, you're going to bringit down higher on your chest, you're
trying to work the whole length ofthe muscle you're trying to do this,
and and power lating, you're justtrying to hit sheer numbers sure weight.
(16:14):
And and also for football too becauseit's more athletic that way too, because
you're you're in here, you're notlike in here for football, You're you're
the same type of leverages. It'sgoing to cross over a lot when you're
trying to you know, press somebodyaway. If you're an offensive or defensive
alignment that incline presses. Incline presseswere huge when I was playing football,
(16:37):
stuff like that. I was gettingup towur by the time I was a
senior in college doing close to fouror five on an incline as well.
That made a big difference. Yeah, I believe it. Man, Well,
you hold multiple uh like you likeyou hold multiple record or not records,
but us in multiple records, don'tget me wrong. But I think
(17:00):
I might still have the USA Powerliftingbench press record I did about three to
five years ago the last time Ilooked. Yeah, my squad workords got
broke. My total record got brokebecause I was I had the squad record
at eight ten and I had thetotal record at twenty one oh five,
(17:21):
I believe, and I think that'sbeen broken because I was the first person
the squad over eight hundred and totalover two thousand uh drug testing in California.
Yeah, in the old eighty FPAwhich became USA Powerlifting. But I
had the bench record at five sixtyseven. Yeah, and that might still
be there. It was like fiveyears ago the last time I looked.
(17:42):
One of the few records that translatedover because they just kept it in the
super heavyweight because I was I thinkI was like two sixty eight when I
did that. Yeah, yeah, and there right now. Yeah, that's
like I said that. That's Iwas just about the ass. I was
like, what are the records orwhat are the the heaviest lift that you
actually set in competition on the daysyou know, I'll talk about like start
(18:07):
when you first started, and tobring it up to right now, like
as you progressed. Well, Imean the heaviest I ever did in the
competition was five sixty seven, yeah, in the bench, and I equaled
that one other time. And thenwhen I was kind of done powerlifting,
I actually got to where I coulddo six thirty five you know, raw
(18:30):
and then started really getting into strawman and stopped training it and stuff like
that, and tore the peck. The most I've done in the competition after
the peck terrors five twenty nine, which is still the world record for the
USPA and the IP and the IPLfor forty five to forty nine. And
(18:55):
then I did five eighteen, whichis still the world record in the IPL
for over fifty Yeah. So butthat's in the three lift meeting as well,
it's not just the single lift, guys. Yeah, yeah, you're
not doing You're not walking in onlydoing one special event just to get a
record. No, you're getting atrue record. Yeah, which I've seen
day always here is like unless youdo the three lists, I don't want
(19:18):
to hear nothing. Yeah. Theday I did the five twenty nine and
the bench was it the US Open, And I squatted eight seventy and deadlifted
at eight thirty two the same day, so yeah, yeah, and then
I did eight forty eight and eightfifteen in the squad and the deadlift the
day I did the five eighteen aswell, so damn yeah. And that's
(19:42):
some serious benching, some serious squatting, and some serious deadlifting. Yeah.
Well, you know, and likeeven you know, even going on with
the surgery on your stomach, goingthrough all that and the ramp up to
get to because I want to sayfour fifty is in training with me and
(20:06):
you in the same room. Thatwas like the smoothest it's been, so
you know, like we haven't seeneach other in a little bit. So
it's like I don't know if thebench is gone up from there, but
I remember you put like like seriouslypushing hard even though you're still see me
again. You will see that outof me again. I guarantee you will
see a five hundred out of meagain. Yeah, you'll see another three
(20:30):
hundred pounds squad and we'll see howthe dead life works out. But some
things are going better. Oh yeah, you know what I'm saying. But
that's the thing. We've got toget you into some yoga. We need
someone out there that can stretch you. I do need to. I've been
working on my mobility, which isthat's helped quite a bit. The pain
(20:53):
is getting a lot less in myhit because of it, and I'm getting
better balanced. And then I've alsolike thrown in I usually have never trained
like box squad stuff like that, but I'm putting the box squats in to
know kind of right where I needto be m and push out of it
that type of stuff. And it'sit's also when I sit. When I
(21:17):
sit to the box, it alsolevels out my hips. Yeah, when
you sit and with it leveling itout, then I now know what it
feels like. So I'm trying todo some type of box squad. It
doesn't have to be super heavy, but to where I sit down on it
and my hips are level. WhenI sit at the bottom, I try
(21:38):
not to put too much weight onit. I just want to feel them
be, you know, level atthe bottom of the squad. So it
was I come out, I comeup level as well. Yeah, and
it will help fix the imbalanced thereexactly which you made big strides in,
you know what I'm saying, Like, I had to pull back and then
(22:02):
I realized, you know, oneside is stronger than the other because of
the surgery and these other things. So I need to train the one side
as much as I can to getit strong again. And then whatever I
stop at on that side, Itrain the other side exactly the same,
exactly the same, So they endup leveling out, that's it. And
(22:23):
then once they level out, thenI can move the whole thing forwards.
Yeah. Mistake that people make alot in rehabbing injuries is they, you
know, train the one side that'shealthy as hard as they can, and
then they train the other side, and it's always going to lag behind.
The best way to do it isto train the one the bad side first
(22:45):
and get everything out of it,and then train the other side the exact
same, exactly that's true too, because you always see it, like you
know, and like I said,I'm much more familiar in the bodybuilding world
for everything so strong man. LikeI said, I'm still learning an a
a lot. But like one ofthe joys sees you see like a bodybuilders
Papa tent, Papa bicep hurt themselvesand guess what they're They're just you know,
(23:07):
and I understand it, and ittakes it takes a lot to go
in the gym with an injury andjust train. But they're just training one
arm or just training one leg,and it's like, you know, like
do that, but just understand thatwhen you get back to training your other
body part you need to level thoseout. Yeah. But the interesting thing
is, you know who tore hisbiceps, the liver King, Yeah,
(23:32):
I ran into him at the shotshow. What well, I understand your
feelings towards that guy. So Iam definitely interested in hearing the conversation that
you had because, like I said, you know, me and Nick,
we're best friends. We talk allthe time, and so you know,
(23:53):
I know it was an interesting conversationto say the least, because I came
around the corner and he's talking tosomebody about training heavy and doing all that
stuff, and I just go,Or you can just train with somebody who
actually trains heavy and does World's StrongestMan, And yeah, it turns around.
And I said hi to him,and we were nice and stuff,
(24:14):
and then we got into it.And when you gets start talking to him,
he's not a bad dude. Hewas actually pretty interesting. And he
told me, you know, Itold him about you know, how I'm
healing from the kidney and how longhe was out stuff like that. I'm
like, yeah, I mean, you can get back to doing things within
two weeks. It's like, Ijust can't take two weeks off. I
(24:36):
go, yeah, you can.You can do other things blood in and
blood out, so it's going tomake it heal. So go do your
drags, go do that other stuff, but just leave that arm alone other
than moving it, you know, and like jump in a pool and move
your arm in the pool. Dostuff where it's gonna be weightless, where
you're not gonna put a lot ofpressure on it, and stuff like that,
(24:56):
and just get the movement out ofit that you can and get blood
and it, you know. AndI go, because your tenants take a
little bit longer to heal, butyou're gonna get back to where you were.
You're gonna be able to do allthese things. You just have to
be smart about it. And hejust kept like asking me question after question,
which I thought was really kind ofneat, actually nice, and he
(25:18):
took down my number and stuff likethat, so you know, he's like,
yeah, you can come out anddo this challenge. And I'm like
he goes with the kettlebells for youwill be one hundred and fifty pounds.
I'm like, okay, yeah, like like walk a mile with one hundred
and fifty pounds in each hand. And I was like, yeah, that's
a warm up. That's not eventhe warm up. That's the implement.
That's like I might have the worldrecord and the Farmer's walk there, but
(25:42):
so I'm not really afraid of onehundred fifty pounds in the morning. Oh
yeah, but the mile is stilla long way to go though, so
oh yeah, no, no,that is a long that is a long
way. That's some super He's stillkind of neat and refreshing to sit there
and talk to the guy, Sothat was pretty cool, and he was
very nice, respectful to me.So that that was cool. There,
(26:03):
that's good. That's good to hear. That's good. Yeah, you know,
so that's talking about the shot show. Was there anyone besides the liver
King that you're actually able to runto, because I know there was quite
a bit of people there, tobe quite honest with you, I ran
into Adam sure, oh yeah, yeah, bron Stroman, I ran oh
man, Yeah, it was.It was kind of neat to run into
(26:23):
Adam. He was busy doing histhing, but we talked for a couple
of minutes. And it's always greatto see Adam. I've known Adam for
quite some time and it's just Iyou know, competed with him in straw
Man and stuff like that. Soit's always good when you see him and
hang out and the energy you feedoff that guy is just it's incredible.
It's always good to see him.So that was pretty cool. And then
(26:45):
just ran into just all kinds ofpeople there we go, you know,
yeah, but it's yeah, it'sI have never seen a show that big.
I mean, it was in multiplebuildings, it was at Caesar's,
it was at the Venetian, It'son multiple floors of the Sands. X
(27:10):
Fish stuff like that. So itwas utterly massive, and uh, it
was pretty neat to go through andsee some of the stuff. Yeah,
oh yeah, still couldn't find itbest to fit me though. Any custom
makers out there understand we need thisbig you know what. I Yeah,
So that that was kind of funny. But got to check out a lot
(27:33):
of really neat stuff. Got tomeet the people at Axevill for the for
the air protection stuff like that, which you know, I got one of
the one of the headphones from them. And because we can't just wear the
inner ear stuff, yeah, wehave to wear the muffs. Yeah,
and I got the muffs and man, what a difference. Oh yeah,
(27:57):
what a difference because usually when wefire the fifty cal, I have to
put the yeah in her ear andtheme ear inter ear things and I don't
have to do it with those.Yeah. And they sealed the ear had
that good and then they the noisereduction on them is just unlike anything I've
ever seen. So that was thatwas pretty cool. Hell yeah, that's
really cool. That's it. Well, Nick, you know that we covered
(28:21):
quite a bit today. Yeah,we're all over the place. Yeah,
exactly. Well, let our listenersknow, Okay, well as they always
trained hard, train smart, andbe the best you can be. And
if you like this, please like, share and subscribe, And if you
have any questions or anything you wantme to talk about, leave in the
comments. Give us some subjects.Uh. I think the next next one
(28:45):
of these we're gonna do, we'regonna have a guest on again. So
we're gonna get ahold of a coupleof guys to talk to them and maybe
a couple of girls as well, and start having some some more guests and
