(01:23):
Nick, you know it's been aweek and morning. You know what I'm
saying this is, we're up early, We're getting this done. You know,
we've got a lot of stuff comingup. I just want to make
a quick announcement for us. Weare going to be in a Sacramento area
at the Winter Warrior, Nick isgoing to be doing the judging. So

(01:46):
if you guys want to come seeNick, hang out with Nick, or
just come watch the events, well, guess what you can easily do that.
It'll be at the Winter Warrior inSacramento. I'll put the address.
It's at untamed Gym and Nick, are you excited to actually be out here
coming out this way and judging?Yeah? Yeah, I'm looking forward to
coming up there and hanging out withyou guys and seeing Gina and going through

(02:07):
all that stuff with everybody. It'sit's gonna be a blast. It's a
heck of a place to to trainand stuff. So it's gonna be neat
to see a contest round there,so it'll it'll be fun. And then
I just like talking to everybody andcoaching while I'm judging and everything else.
So it's it's gonna be cool.Oh yeah, it's definitely be good.

(02:28):
You know. And this is athing too, like what competitors and stuff
like that are actually gonna be there. You know. It's it's that mind
focus, that that that that thatthought process you need to have to actually
you know, be ready to competebecause you know, there's training mindset and
then there's game day mindset. Youknow what I'm saying, what do you
think the big key factors in thatand the two differences are well, one,

(02:53):
you have to realize training is exactlythat it's training. It doesn't have
to be. You want to justas close to the competition as you can.
You want your technique on the individualevents, it's close to what you're
gonna do as possible. But ifyou got it that day, you got
it. If you don't have itthat day, it's okay. You don't
have to push over the edge anddrop the hammer completely down. In training,

(03:15):
you should train hard, you shouldtrain intensely, and you know,
more is not necessarily better. Bettertraining is better, But the mindset shouldn't
be you know, it's it's gameday, it's it's practice for game day.
So you're gonna go hard. You'regonna go into the you know,
eighty five to ninety five percentile, you know, in that range somewhere,

(03:38):
but you don't push that little extrathat's say for game day. You always
just leave a smidge of the tank, a little bit, you know,
and that's where you ride the fineline and it keeps you from getting injured.
Your training is better, you lastlonger, stuff like that, So
it's better training is exactly that. It's training. You know, if you

(04:00):
you're you know, if one weekyou're an inch below parallel on your squats
and the next week you're a halfinch high, Okay, it's not the
end of the world. It's training. The only day it truly matters is
game day when you're up on theplatform, and that's when you got to
do what you're supposed to do.But you need to practice that in training.
But again, you want to beas close to what you're doing in

(04:21):
the contest. But you know,if it's not quite right on any one
given day, it's not the endof the world. It's just you got
work in, and the important thingis getting the consistent, methodical work in
to produce the result that you want. On game day. Game day you
just drop the hammer. I mean, it's everything's all out. You focused,

(04:41):
you you get your mental preparedness there. You visualize, you go through
things in your head over and overon what you're going to do on that
particular event, and then once youdo that event, you have amnesia.
You move on to the next eventlike that last event didn't even happen,
you know, go through each onelike that and try to get every point

(05:01):
possible that you need to be inthe position that you're looking for at the
end of the contest. And ifyou're in a lead and you know you're
you're dominating and you're doing well, then you you don't necessarily need to push
to that line if you can saveit in the tank for another contest on
the line and not get completely beatup and yet still win the contest.

(05:25):
The object is to win the contest. It isn't to you know, set
a PR every time you go,because not a whole lot of people alive
can set a PR every time theystep on a platform, you know.
And eventually you get to where youknow, you're at the peak of your
performance level, and that's where it'sat. And some days you're going to
be close to that PR, andsome days you're going to be over that

(05:46):
PR, and some days you're gonabe a little behind the PR. That's
okay, just go do the bestyou can on that an and given day.
Yeah, no, no, that'sthat's definitely true. And with all
that mindset and you talking about thisright now, a lot of people,
you know, for those who aren'tfamiliar with strong Man, those who are
just stepping into strong Man. StrongMan is a smart game, a smart
man's game, all right. Andand this is something I've come to learn

(06:12):
because like one of the things thatyou know, and just just just from
the conversations with Nick, conversation witha lot of other strong men, it's
just not a game of lifting upthe heaviest thing and putting down the heaviest
thing. Because this is a competition, this is a show, and there
is so much strategy that goes intothis, and you know, with the
strategy and the thought process and likethe methodical thought process that has to go

(06:35):
into every event and with points andall the way everything is calculated up there,
there's a whole other aspect that mostpeople don't even think about. And
that's the thing too, is likeyou know that that only comes with experience,
and Nick, you got all theexperience with that, because I've heard
you say so many things that I'mlike, oh my god, I didn't
even think of that. Yeah,So I mean, if you're not the

(07:00):
biggest and you're not I mean, granted, I was blessed with some talent
I was blessed with the drive.I was blessed with, you know,
a willingness to hurt more than someoneelse. And that's okay. But I
wasn't put in Brian's body, Thor'sbody, you know these other things.

(07:24):
And the other parts is I'm notwilling to take the extreme measures that others
were willing to take. So Ihad to be better and learn how to
do the events that best fit mein the way that you know, I
could get the most points out ofit, and everything that they did,
you got to figure it out.I was way older when I got started.

(07:45):
I got started with most people theircareer has been over for five years,
and I, well, I amgoing to Worlds at forty one.
So it's you have to think aboutthese things. You have to think about
motion and movement and you know, efficiencies on everything that you do to save
a half a second here, halfa second there, or make things easier,

(08:07):
like wearing a belt in you know, in sandbag Medley's and or just
like any Medley like that, anduse learning how to properly use the belt
makes a big difference. And it'sit's not about you. You're already in
a strong man contest. So it'snot it's not about you know, being
the guy that can make it thehardest on themselves and still do it.

(08:28):
It's it's about make it as mostsufficient as possible and saving the most energy
for the next event, and thenthe last event you just let everything you
got left go. It's that's it'snot rocket science. But you still have
to think about what you're doing. And the competition now is not like it
was, you know, twenty yearsago. I mean, guys have a

(08:50):
lot access to a lot of theequipment now, guys, you know,
there's a much more training online andyou see what a lot of the top
guys are doing online, and ifyou watch a lot of the videos,
you can learn a lot of stufffrom him. But you got to know
what you're looking for when you whenyou go to look at it, you
look at their feet and their handsand how they grab things and stuff like
that. I mean, there there'sso much there that people just still don't

(09:13):
realize. Yeah, now that there'sa lot of things that you know,
and then they we get the MitchellHoopers of the world, who just have
a God give given talent to Yeah, he's super analytical and he will walk
up and ask people questions and listento them. It's not like he doesn't
he gets an answer and he's like, eh, you know, I don't

(09:35):
know. He like literally sifts throughit and goes, well, yeah that,
let me think about that, andthen he'll actually try it, and
then when it works, he's likehe'll walk over and thank you as well.
Guys don't do that, So it'sit's pretty Uh, he's the craziest
mixture of all of it, andhe's a good dude, So it's it's

(09:58):
you don't mind helping people like that. And like I said, he's he's
pretty special in a lot of thoseregards. But he's that type of guy
that everything he touches he's gonna bepretty good at. So I mean,
not only does he have the physicalprowless, he has the mental process and

(10:18):
he learns things at a very veryvery accelerated level. You know. He
he he will take the ball andrun with it. So you know,
he's gonna be a lot for guysto deal with until he's decides he doesn't
want to. Yeah, he's gonnabe a thread on everything that he walks
into. Yeah, all the levelsyou know, and Here's the thing too,

(10:39):
is like he's multi facetating everything he'sdoing, and he's doing you know,
for a strong man, he's hittedthe scene. He hit the scene,
and especially after winning, he hitthe scene running to literally develop and
grow his platform as big as possible. And it's so great to see because
you know, like I said,Martine means Eddie Brian, you know what

(11:03):
I'm saying, like they've taken thissport and and given so much to it
to to help promote it, tohelp grow it, to help push it
forward. And he's doing the samething, you know what I'm saying,
and that then you know it's yeah, it's a dronus. Like I said,
there's there's there's you know, certainathletes out there that that that pushed
and promoted and literally carried this sportto the next level. And it's good

(11:24):
to see that the younger generation that'scoming in that's starting to pop up,
they're they're they're wanting to do thesame thing too. They're trying to push
the sport and not just use thesport as a monetary game, but as
the as you know, let's grow, let's let's just the community. Because
the strong man community is strong. The strong man community comes out the strong

(11:45):
man community. It's, like Isaid, it's very diverse. And that's
what I like to see because,like I said, you're you're seeing people
all walks alive come to these shows, watch these shows, and it's just
it's just one of those things thatI enjoyed the most, just being on
the sidelines watching. Oh yeah, for sure exactly. And then you know,
Nick, how you're training going. How would I know you've been working

(12:05):
on your squats. I know you'vebeen working on the deadlift. You know,
a lot of people need to rememberthat it was around this time last
year that you had to have stomachsurgery and you were still continuing to lift
in the six to seven hundreds afterhaving surgery. You know what I'm saying,
a freaking nature. Yeah, training'sgoing fairly well. There's there's issues.

(12:30):
Some days I'm super motivated, inother days it's it's it's tough,
some of it's getting older, someof it's life. But for the most
part, I keep trying to analyzethings and work on things and change things
to better suit what's going on andhow our body's reacting to it. Just

(12:52):
case in point, this week, you know, I've been having trouble,
like right at that where I hitparallel on the squat and half these squats
really helped me with a lot ofthings because I can come down more even
with a balance. And then thenext week I do squats, so I
go back and forth between the two, so I don't develop a groove one

(13:15):
way and forget my regular squat grooveand have to relearn that. So I
go back and forth week to week. And then I was I've always been
kind of against box squats, butI was, you know, sitting on
you know, the box that Ihave, and I was stretching and taking
an implement and trying to pull myselfforwards and like loosen up my adductors and

(13:41):
that type of stuff, and realizedthat the box I'm sitting on almost has
me at perfect death one and thentwo, it keeps me straight at the
bottom because my hips are crooked,so my left side's always a little bit
lower, about an inch lower thanmy right. And some of that's,

(14:01):
you know, having the surgeries. Some of that's you know, my right
hip doesn't like me anymore, whichis fine, you know, But I
started doing the box squats I justthought, hey, why not do the
put a mixture of the two together, and it as I came down and
as I touched the box at thebottom, I could feel the left hit

(14:24):
and then I'd keep sitting till theright hit and I'm like, now,
this is what it's supposed to feellike when my hips are straight at the
bottom. I can feel that andthen come back up. And then so
I do that again, and Iworked the groove, you know, with
the lighter weights, and then Icome out and I was doing sets of
three going up once it started gettingheavy, but it felt much better because

(14:46):
it managed to get me to where, you know, I now remember what
it feels like to have those hipsstraight at the bottom, and that was
kind of a big deal. Andthen it's just little things like that we'll
make a big difference in the longrun because I got to fix that imbalance
there, and it's it's going tofix the imbalance. And I ended up
doing three with seven hundred, whichyou know, it's a lot of weight,

(15:11):
but to me, it's to whatI've been capable of. It's you
know, it's in the ninety percentile, but it's not you know, out
of this world. So it wasI was pretty happy with the results I
got out of it, and it'slittle things like that. Now, with
the stomach surgery and stuff like that, I'm now gonna I've been working my

(15:35):
ads, but not as much asI would like to have. I'm gonna
have to concentrate on that more todevelop the recta saidamas and stuff like that
again in a better way. BecauseI'm having problems pulling myself forwards with my
own body, so I have tograb the bar and like wedge underneath it.

(15:58):
And I've noticed I'm getting like I'mat cramps as I like pulling the
wedge into the bar and stuff likethat. So it's like, Okay,
now why would I be doing thisBecause I have a weakness. So now
I got to fix that weakness. And now I'll figure out ways to specifically
fix that weakness in that position sothat I'll be able to pull off the
floor better. That's all. Ohyeah, I mean my goals that I

(16:22):
have set for next year are veryachievable. I mean this year, this
year, gosh, at least trackyour time are very achievable. So I
just have to be smart and achievethose goals and then if I exceed them
a little bit, great. IfI just get to those goals, great,
that's that's that's where I'm headed.So and then I have some further

(16:45):
goals at the end of the year. But we'll see, Yeah, that'll
come exactly exactly. Well, then, I think we covered quite a bit
for this this episode here. Okay, I just want to do one little
shout out for one of our goodfriends and other podcasts co host. Happy
birthday, John Anderson. Happy birthday, John. I hope you have a

(17:08):
great day. Yeah, yesterday washis birthday. Oh okay, well you
know so he's the big fifty two. Oh such a young man. Oh
yeah, that's good. Well that'sit. And Nick, well, let
these people know those beautiful words.Let them know what they need to do

(17:30):
so then we can shoot on it. All right. Well, if you
