Episode 823:
In this episode, we dive into a discussion on wisdom, guided by Proverbs 3:1-23. We focus on the well-known verses 5 and 6, which encourage us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and not to lean on our own understanding. I emphasize the importance of trusting God, even when we don't understand the reasons behind certain situations in our lives. We reflect on how our understanding is limited compared to God's infinite wisdom and how leaning on Him can lead us to the right path.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're listening to the Bible Guys, a podcast where a
couple of friends talk about the Bible in fun in
practical ways. Hey, everybody, welcome to the Bible guys. Are
you excited, Wesley, I am excited.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Yes.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
Wednesday it is when, yes, and it's the day before
Thanksgiving yes, yeah. So people are getting ready and today
is a workday for people. Yes, they're working and they're cooking. Yeah,
and well a lot of people are not you not your.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Wife, because we are doing the catering. You're catering in man,
we're doing it the smart way.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
That day you're key one and done, baby drop.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
It and then we're doing well.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Hey, welcome to the Bible guys. And we are in
the middle of a series about God's promises. But before
we get into that, we are talking today. Uh well,
a segment of today that Desiree has given us. And
this is one of my favorites. It is would you rather?

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Would you?

Speaker 1 (00:53):
And the reason why I like would you rather? Is
usually it's two bad choices, but you are you have
to pick one. Yeah, right, So that's the concept of
would you rather? Would you rather do this or that?
But you have to pick even if they're both bad. Yeah,
so you want to take turns of reading them?

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Okay, yeah, you want to. Number one, would you rather
cook the entire Thanksgiving meal by yourself or clean up
everything by yourself? For me? Hands down clean up?

Speaker 1 (01:20):
Yeah, I'm with you. I'm with you in this. Now
tell me why.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
I mean, it's just so much work preparing the food.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
Yeah, I mean it is.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
You know, there's a lot of like measuring science. There's
a lot that goes into science.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
Wow. I was gonna say arts, yeah, but no science.
I guess both, right, Yeah. Yeah. The single only reason
why I would definitely clean up, Well, there's two reasons.
The primary reason is I'm not a good cook.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
Yeah, so I would.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
Mess everything up. My kids would literally like say, let's
go to Bob Evans. Yeah, because Dad messed up every
single part of the meal other than maybe the mashed potatoes. Yeah,
because I know how to do that, because I help
my mom when I was a kid for forever with that.
But other than that, Yeah, And I guess the secondary

(02:07):
reason is I don't mind cleaning. Yeah, I don't mind
doing dishes. Yeah, so I don't mind.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
That's my wife's side of the family, so they are
like meat to the tenth degree. Really yeah?

Speaker 1 (02:18):
So wow?

Speaker 2 (02:19):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Okay, So do you does your wife clean as she
goes or is it more so at the end.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
It depends on on what. So if we're talking about
like cooking, like for Thanksgiving, she would do it as
she goes because that's how her parents did it. Her
parents literally if when we go visit them in Florida,
when they cook breakfast, yeah, by the time breakfast is done,
the kitchen is spotless.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
That's literally how they do it.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
Wow. So's that's unusual. Yeah, I would say that's unusual. Yes,
all right. Number two? Would you rather only have pie
for Thanksgiving dinner? Or have only side dishes?

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Oh? So this is easy for me. I'm a side
dish person. I'm not a big meat person. Yep, so
I'll take the side dishes all day.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Well, I am a very big carne meat person. However,
I would definitely choose side dishes over pie, mainly because
I'm not a big sweet sky.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
Oh I'm a big sweets person.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
Yeah. So so I love pie. Yeah, and I will
force myself to eat pie at Thanksgiving.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
But wait a minute, we got to do the most
important thing. Oh sweet potato or pumpkin. There is only
one choice here, Chris. There is no in between sweet
potato or pumpkin.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
I already have a very strong feeling you're gonna say
sweet potato. Yes, but I grew up with pumpkin. Oh man, Yeah,
so it's pumpkin.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
I'm just not a fan of pumpkin. I don't know
what it is.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
I love a good pumpkin pie. Yeah, I love a
good pumpkin pie. So all right, go ahead.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Number three. Would you rather your stuffing be too dry
or your cranberry sauce be too sour? Now that would
be too bad? Choices right there? Yeah, stuffing too gonna.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
I'm gonna pick for me stuffing to dry, because I
believe or not, I'm one of the very few people
that loves the jellied cranberry sauce.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
Okay, you know the kind of the can. I listen,
I don't just what we grew up with you in
the can.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
I don't like it? Yeah, I love it. Yeah, in fact,
it's a requirement for Thanksgiving.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
One year years ago, like ten years ago, Liz forgot
the jellied cranberry sauce and I literally got in the
car and drove on Thanksgiving Day, which surprisingly people things
are still open. Yeah, and I went and I could
not eat Thanksgiving meal with that jelly. Yeah, and I
and what I mean, I love it. It makes the

(04:55):
whole meal for me. So therefore stuffing I could do
without stuff. Yeah, but I have to have my jelly
cranbery sauce.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
Oh that's pretty good. What about you see? That's that's tough.
I mean, I don't really like sour things, like, you know,
like growing up, even as a kid, people would have
like sour patch kids and me sour things. I never
was a big sour person, So I might have to
go with the stuffing. I don't know. The stuffing being

(05:24):
too dry, I mean to me, that's not the end
of the world. It would be different if it tasted bad.
But if it's just a little dryer, I could live.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
With it, youdio, Yeah, I could live with it, all right,
all right. Number four, Would you rather have your Thanksgiving
dinner photographed for a magazine or judged on a cooking show?
What a question?

Speaker 2 (05:47):
Wow, I might take photographed for a magazine versus being judged.

Speaker 1 (05:52):
Yeah, I'm gonna do that too, only because it always
looks phenomenal. Yeah, right, And and so my wife would
do a phenomenal job there. Now do I think she
would do well because she cooks very well. Yes, I
actually do think she'd do well. Yeah, but I would much.
I mean, cooking shows.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
Are harsh, but I was going to say that on
a cooking show, you're being critiqued on everything, right, you
know they'll find something to critique critique you.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
On, right, right, right, Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna go with that.
I'm gonna go with photographed.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Yeah. Then number five? Would you rather have to dress
like a pilgrim all day or wear a turkey costume
all day?

Speaker 1 (06:33):
Is there a competition here?

Speaker 2 (06:35):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (06:35):
Right, I mean pilgrim all day long? It's just like
a black suit with a hat, right, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
I mean, yeah, I guess so, But I'm trying to
think so, I wouldn't mind. But hear me out on
this one. A turkey costume all day may not be
bad in the right setting. As an example, if you
went to the Thanksgiving Day parade dressed as a turkey,
no one would batter not you blend in.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
Well, yeah, but you blended as a pilgrim too, true.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
But I think the kids would love it if you
were the turkey.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
They want to take pictures.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
You know.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
It's amazing to me. Your mind went to a parade
when I was picturing myself at the house. Wow.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
So yeah, Now if you're just at home, watch yeah
maybe the Yeah.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
Because I don't go to Thanksgiving parades. Yeah, so I
was always thinking my context.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
Yeah, so if you're out in public, I'm going with
the turkey costume.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
All right? All right? Well hey, uh those are fun
to think about, and they really make you think, don't they?

Speaker 2 (07:34):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (07:35):
Would you rather than make you think?

Speaker 2 (07:36):
They make you think?

Speaker 1 (07:37):
And another thing that makes you think is proverbs.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
I feel like these are getting worse and worse.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
Yeah, well, I mean especially the Book of Proverbs. Yes,
because because it goes from truth nugget to truth nugget
piece of advice, the piece of advice, it really truly
does make you think. It does and it forces you
to make a choice, just like these. Would you rather?

Speaker 2 (08:04):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (08:04):
Hey, I thought that was a good transition. I'm shooting for,
like like weighted transitions.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
It raise is gonna cut that one out?

Speaker 1 (08:15):
No, no, no, no, hey, we're in Proverbs, very famous verse
Proverbs three, five and six, but we're going to go
all the way from Proverbs three to one to.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
What the end of twenty three twenty three? Okay, okay,
here we go. So Proverbs chapter three, starting at verse one,
My child, never forget the things I have taught you.
Store my commands in your heart. If you do this,
you will live many years in your life will be satisfying.
Never let loyalty and kindness leave you. Tie them around

(08:47):
your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart.
Then you will find favor with both God and people,
and you will earn a good reputation. Trust in the
Lord with all your heart. Do not depend on your
own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and
he will show you which path to take. Don't be

(09:08):
impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and
turn away from evil. Then you will have healing for
your body and strength for your bones. Honor the Lord
with your wealth and with the best part of everything
you produce. Then he will fill your burns with grain,
and your vets will overflow with good wine. My child,

(09:29):
don't reject the Lord's discipline, and don't be upset when
he corrects you. For the Lord corrects those he loves,
just as a father corrects a child in whom he
delights Joyful was the person who finds wisdom, the one
who gains understanding. For wisdom is more profitable than silver,
and her wages are better than gold. Wisdom is more

(09:51):
precious than rubies. Nothing you desire can compare with her.
She offers you long life in her right hand and
riches an honor in her left. She will guide you
down delightful paths. All her ways are satisfying. Wisdom is
a tree of life to those who embrace her. Happy
are those who hold her tightly by wisdom. The Lord

(10:14):
found at the earth by understanding. He created the heavens.
By his knowledge, the deep fountains of the earth burst forth,
and the dew settles beneath the night sky. My child,
don't lose sight of common sense and discernment. Hang on
to them, for they will refresh your soul. They are
like jewels on a necklace. They keep you safe on

(10:35):
your way, and your feet will not stumble.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
I love how Solomon always refers to Wisdom as a her.
Yeah yeah, right yeah, And he refers to she and
her as if as if it's a person. And then
always says how valuable she is and how much you

(11:00):
should sacrifice in order to obtain wisdom and attain her
right kind of great. So hey, the key verses are
some of the most quoted verses in all the Bible,
Proverbs three, five, and six. Wouldn't you say, Yeah, people
really do love this verse.

Speaker 2 (11:19):
Yeah. When I was reading this, I had to, in
my mind not read it from the King James version,
which is how I learned it. In lean, not you know,
put your own understanding?

Speaker 1 (11:29):
Yea, yeah, yeah, So it says trust in the Lord
with all your heart, and do not depend on your
own understanding. Seek his will and all you do, and
he will show you which path to take. So just
those verses alone. Again, keeping with our theme of wisdom
and guidance is that it says trust and so the

(11:49):
first thing that we can do is realize that God's
guidance begins with trust. Right. Trust means to rely on,
to rest in, to place confidence upon that we should
We should completely trust God, and we trust God for
who he is. And a lot of times, uh, you know,
when we have trouble with God, we have trouble with

(12:11):
the why of things. Right, don't don't you Heaven. You
have conversations with people where they say, if I just
understood why, you know, if I just knew why, then
I could be more okay with it. But sometimes we're
not given the why. Sometimes we are, sometimes we're not.
And I think that whenever things happen in our lives,

(12:32):
especially tragedies, that that forced us that we just want
to know the reason why. When we don't know why,
we have to lean in the what and the who. Right,
So we let's put the why aside and let's lean
into the what and the who. The what is all
the promises that are given to us, and the who
is who. God is right, and so God is, it's

(12:53):
the character of God. It's the the intention of God,
that the love of the love that God has for us,
the promises that tell us that He wants was best
for us, and so that that really is the basis
of our trust. Yeah, our trust is I mean, I
understand the why, but I trust the Who.

Speaker 2 (13:12):
Yeah. And I love how it says trust. It doesn't
just say trust in the Lord. It says trust in
the Lord with all your heart. Yea. So that means
with every ounce of everything that you have on the inside,
trust God with everything that you have. So that can
be tough sometimes to trust the Lord with your whole

(13:32):
heart when you don't know the next step or you
can't see the way. I have an overactive imagination, and
when I read this verse, I think of what was
that the Indiana Jones and it might have been the
Temple of Doom. I don't remember which one it was.
But when he had to walk across that invisible.

Speaker 1 (13:53):
Oh yeah, that was the that was the search for
the grail.

Speaker 2 (13:56):
Okay, yeah, yeah, So I think of that, how you
got to just trust God. It doesn't always make sense,
it's not necessarily intuitively what you might think to do,
but you still have to trust God because he knows
what's the correct path to take. So I think that's
something that we have to remember and don't depend on

(14:17):
your own understanding, because your own understanding can lie to you.
You know, you can be praying to God, you know,
should in a dating situation, should I go back to
that person? I know they're no good for me, and
you kind of already know the answer, but your heart
will say give them another chance. Meanwhile, God is saying
I told you never to date that person in the

(14:39):
first place. That's right, So don't lean upon your own understanding,
trust in God with your whole heart.

Speaker 1 (14:45):
Yeah right, yeah, so you know, And I love what
you said there about your whole heart because your whole
heart really means every area of your life.

Speaker 2 (14:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (14:56):
So you know, sometimes we're willing to give God one
area of our lives but not the other.

Speaker 2 (15:01):
Right, But God, you can deal with this, but I'm
keeping this.

Speaker 1 (15:04):
And and dating often is one of those things right
where it's like, Okay, God, I'll give you my finances,
I'll tithe, and I'll honor you. That's not a problem
for me. I'll give you my anger problems, I'll give
you my you know, morality, and my choices, my wisdom,
and even how I run my business. But don't tell
me how to date or who to date, right, or

(15:25):
it could be the opposite of those things, right, we
can say, hey, no problem on the dating, but not
with the finances. So I think that trusting God with
your whole heart represents categories of our lives, aspects of
our lives. So it's a good reason to reflect, you know,
it's a good it's a good challenge to reflect and say, Okay, God,
you know what part am I holding back. I'm not

(15:47):
giving you the whole part of me, just most of me.

Speaker 2 (15:51):
Right.

Speaker 1 (15:52):
And then here's another thing that stands out on these verses.
When it says do not lean on your own understanding,
there's a couple of things that that implies. Number one,
it implies that our understanding is limited. Right, And so
it's like, don't lean on your own understanding. Why you
have to ask why? What's because your own understanding isn't God's.

(16:12):
So in Isaiah, God says, my ways are higher than
your ways, My thoughts are higher than your thoughts. Only
God has full understanding as to what's happening in our lives.
And Proverbs three five and six represents, like you said
last podcast, acrossroads, right, So it says it will show
you which path to take that indicates a crossroads moment,

(16:35):
you know, like I could take this path or I
could take this path.

Speaker 2 (16:38):
And so.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
Just know that when you lean on God's understanding, the
trust comes in knowing that our understanding is limited.

Speaker 2 (16:46):
Yeah, And I think that's super important to remember that
we can't see the whole picture. And I think as
human beings we think we see the whole picture, and
really we don't. We're only getting a sliver of that piece.
I think about my dad when he was praying, and
this would have been late seventies, early eighties. He used
to work for a Ford, a motor company, and there

(17:10):
was a lot of just transition in that time. If
anybody knows the history of the automotive industry back then,
you had a lot of imports coming in at that time,
so it was putting pressure on the Big three. They
were downsizing a little bit. So my dad had an
opportunity to go to a different division, and he was

(17:30):
praying about that, and everything about that option seemed great.
I mean it was we would have had to move.
But other than that, the pay scene fine, the deal
on the table scene fine. But he strongly felt the
lord told him no, and saying no means he would

(17:51):
have been laid off. But he said no, and he
didn't take that option. He talked to some of the
guys later on who took that option, and like that
whole division ended up getting disbanded in later on, wow,
like wiped away. So my dad in the moment could
have thought he knew the right way. This seems and

(18:12):
feels good. It seems like right, this is the way
to go, and it's really not the way to go.
That's why with major life decisions we need to lean
on God and not on our own understanding.

Speaker 1 (18:22):
Yeah, and that's that story is dependent on the fact
that your father was confident that he heard from God. Yeah, right,
so he so he you know, because because it's one
thing to say, is that God or is that me?
You know? But but but you know, that's a whole
nother sherman al together.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (18:39):
But once we understand and we believe and trust that
that is the voice of God, that's the leading of God,
then trust it with your whole heart.

Speaker 2 (18:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (18:46):
Yeah, that's great. And then somebody once told me that
this is such a great thought. It's impossible to lean
in two directions at the same time.

Speaker 2 (18:56):
Oh that's good, that's true.

Speaker 1 (18:58):
So it's either your leaning to the left or to
the right, because you can only lean one way. So
it's either you're leaning more towards your own understanding or
you're leaning on God's wisdom. And so that's why it says,
you know, trust a little with all your heart and
lean not to your own understanding, but in all your
ways acknowledge him. And so Acknowledging him is also another

(19:21):
sermon right there too. Acknowledging means means submitting, not just
mentioning God. Right, So this one doesn't say acknowledge. It
actually says seek Him with all you do. But the
version that we memorize was acknowledge. But sometimes acknowledging means
to mention. But this doesn't mean to mention. It means

(19:42):
submission acknowledging. God says, Okay, God, you're in control. I'm
acknowledging your Lord, your God, your CEO. You're the final
authority in my life. And that's the acknowledgement that we're
talking about here, right, which is translated into seek His
will in all you do.

Speaker 2 (20:01):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's good.

Speaker 1 (20:03):
It's important, Chris.

Speaker 2 (20:04):
We got to sneak this one in time. Is we're
running out of time. But verse twenty one, my child,
don't lose sight of common sense and discernment. Hang on
to them, for they will refresh your soul. They are
like jewels on a necklace. They will keep you safe
in your way, and your feet will not stumble. God says,
there is a thing we shouldn't rely totally on it,

(20:28):
but there is a thing called common sense, that's right, discernment.

Speaker 1 (20:32):
That's right. Well, you know, you know it's it's I
remember hearing a Sherman one time, and the conclusion of
the entire series actually was like a four week sermon.
The entire conclusion was that one question, it's the question
to ask, and whenever you're confronted with a choice, it's

(20:54):
it's appropriate to ask the question, what is the wise
thing to do?

Speaker 2 (20:58):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (20:59):
Right, because if you think about it's the perfect question
because wisdom comes from the Lord. So all wisdom comes
from God. So wisdom can be practical like common sense,
but wisdom can also be godly wisdom. Right, So sometimes
if if you know, we're searching for godly wisdom, but

(21:19):
let's just say, like God doesn't speak into this particular thing, right,
like for instance, your dad praying about those jobs. There's
no verse that says thou shalt stay with that division.

Speaker 2 (21:30):
Right.

Speaker 1 (21:31):
So it's like, so you're seeking wisdom, you're seeking wisdom,
seeking wisdom, You're you're you're lining it up with who
God is, the principles of God, the you know, the
promises of God, and all of a sudden you're left
with this choice. And then it's like Hey, then then
there is sort of a common sense factor to it too.
In your dad's case, there is a supernatural piece to it.

Speaker 2 (21:50):
And just for clarity, so no one misunderstands what I
was saying, relying on the discernment where the Holy Spirit
is speaking to you, you should definitely do that all
the time, all the time. The point that I was
making is with don't lose sight of there is at
a certain level where we should pay attention to common sense.

(22:12):
You know that I've been talking to my daughter about
this because she's going to be going a way to
college and we've just been talking about common sense things
like when you're walking around campus, you know, safety kinds
of things. There is a it's not a Bible verse,
but at a basic level, we should all operate with
common sense right as we're navigating the world.

Speaker 1 (22:32):
Yeah, I agree. I agree. And then another thing about
Proverbs three, five and six is that it says some
translations say he will direct your paths, and then some
translations say he will make your paths straight. Right, And
the thing about a straight path is that straight paths.
I mean, think about back in the you know, the
century that this is probably written, what seven hundred years

(22:55):
before Christ, maybe a thousand years before Christ in the
time Solomon, Yeah, something somewhere around there. And so we're
talking about thousands of years ago. Well, most people who
traveled walked right, not not every it was it was
very luxurious to have a horse.

Speaker 2 (23:13):
And walked up and down heels and valleys. And yes,
so they would have understood and making your paths straight.

Speaker 1 (23:20):
That's right, yeah, and so and and you know, if
you think about paths, there's a lot to consider with walking,
you know, trodden paths. You know, most of the paths
were well worn, you know, they were they were the
way that most people took and they paths had reputations
and the winding paths had reputations of being mugged right.

Speaker 2 (23:39):
Or being you know, a good ambush site.

Speaker 1 (23:41):
Yeah. Ambush sites are common when you can't see what's
coming right, because you know, all you see is you know,
a curve around a big mountain or a valley or
something like this. And so you know, to make your
paths straight means, you know, it's easier to to you know,
if you're carrying you know, like a wagon or something
like that, this or pulling a wagon. A straight path

(24:02):
is easier. Uh, it is, It is safer, it is clearer, right.
It represents peace, it represents clarity, it represents direction, and
and so you know, think about just the concept of that.
You know, when he says they'll direct your paths. You know,
when people traveled mostly by foot. All of the implications

(24:24):
of that word picture are attached to that promise, which
is really important to know. Yeah, so hey that that
