Speaker 1 (00:21):
Back to the Big Island Sports Talk Show. I am brother, no,
and always with me is brother Matthew Parker. What's up,
my matt got up?
Speaker 2 (00:29):
No yo, I'm in the house, brother, knowing how you
feeling today.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
I'm good, my man.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
We're here, Episode nineteen of the Big Island Sports Talk Show.
We got a lot to cover. We got to finish
up the Olympic Games, preseason football. I heard somebody did
their NFL draft, so I cannot wait to hear about that.
So we got that some US men's you know, we
got to talk to US men's basketball in depth, track
and field, whatever comes to mind. And I'm looking forward
(00:57):
to evaluating the rookie quarter and seeing what you said
about that. So that that sounds good to you.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
Nice, Let's let's get.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
It then, Well, let's start Olympic highlights. I mean, did
you what was your takeaway from the Olympics this year?
Speaker 1 (01:11):
I called it. It was France and the United the
United States and the United States over France.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
You called that. And what episode was like two, three,
four episodes ago? You did call that. And that's why
we hit record by man, because you deserve your props.
I'll get you a little applause.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
But oh baby, that was good.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
There you go. You deserve that, man, because you put
your money where your mouth was and it came true.
What were your takeaways that that gold medal game was
one for the ages?
Speaker 1 (01:40):
Yeah, yes, that was. That was an incredible game. It
was back and forth, back and forth, and at the
end it was just Steph Curry doing his thing and
Lebron contributing and uh and others.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
And it was a hell of a game, instant classic.
I think I texted you at the end of that.
It was just like, wow, how blessed are we to
have seen what we saw? And I was all into it,
and I remember before I was saying, if Team USA
doesn't win, that it's not going to ruin my Olympics
and everything. But I was over here, like I was
doing aerons running. I was like a sitting in the
parking lot watching them my phone palms all sweaty, like.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Come on us, you got you know what I mean?
Like I was just pushing for him. It was very
competitive game. It is Steph Curry clutch man. That three
pointer over the double team to end it, to put
the game out of reach. That was amazing, and of
course they did, were victorious over the host nation France
ninety eight to eighty seven in route to their fifth
(02:40):
straight gold medal, seventeen out of twenty total goals in
Team USA men's basketball, absolute dominance in this. But I
know we were talked about a little bit before and
if you watched that Serbia game, which was I guess
the bronze medal game, they gave the USA all they
could handle. At one point they were down what double digits,
(03:02):
seventeen eighteen points something and had to battle back. That
was a great game. So I thought that was a
great game. I thought that once of them getting through
that the gold was there for the taking, but France
didn't lay down and Victor win. Vinyama the Rookie of
the Year for the twenty twenty three season. He's going
to be a real problem moving forward.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
That kid is for real, man, that kid is for real.
And oh my god, now we get CP treeover there
and train them lobs and stuff. Whoa, I can't wait.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Well, yeah, everybody better get out of the way because
I don't want to see everybody getting dunked on like
Lebron you got Yeah. I was just thinking that your boy,
you see the little visualize.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Ask you what are you bringing up the pass match?
Speaker 2 (03:45):
But you don't bust the pass is happening right now.
Oh you can move on. Of course, it was trending.
All I saw was trending Lebron oh no, and watching
that dunk it. Wow. I mean, like I said, France
was not gonna lay down, and.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
I'm glad it wasn't lay down.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
Yeah, you got to give it to Lebron because I
wasn't even telling my wife. I love the fact that
he's thirty nine, almost forty years old and he's still
challenging at the rim. Like he didn't go up to
contest it. He tried to draw the charge and you know,
Yovasole was you know, doing his thing and went over
the top and created a great visual But just another
exclamation point on these Olympic Games. And I don't understand
(04:27):
how people can watch the Olympics and not have enjoyed
what they saw in some aspect, like it really was
amazing time.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
I enjoyed it. I enjoyed a lot from the past
Olympics competed this one. It was very, very enjoyable and
a lot of good highlights.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
Well we have that track and field. The USA Basketball
women's basketball women's basketball, they got the gold again in
a nail bier, winning sixty seven to sixty six over
again host nation France, making history for the eighth straight
gold medal, and it's it's really amazing. I'm glad that
they were tested right because we talked about their dominance
(05:04):
coming in and it was just a sure fight win.
But it sounds seems like they could have used some
extra firepower winning only by one point. And if you
couple that with what a point I was making or
last episode. The rest of the world is catching up
to USA basketball. And yes, with Kevin Durant probably not
coming back, Steph Curry getting his one and only gold
(05:26):
medal in the Olympics, he'll probably be done. And Lebron
already said he's done. So USA Basketball, you know, enjoyed
this one because in LA twenty twenty eight it might
be a different story.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
Might be friends the way of France for producing players
whoa that's on team that you that might be there
next the twenty twenty eight.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
Yeah, twenty twenty eight, Yeah, they look very scary. Could
you imagine if Joel Embi decided to play for them?
And they had four time Defensive Player of the Year
Rudy Gobert, who really didn't show up a show out,
got benched, you know, had limited minutes, but he his
presence alone being seven to one Joel Embiid and Victor
(06:10):
winbin Yama like that would have been way too much size.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
Nobody's scoring it in the paint. Yeah, if all those
treet guys playing at the same time, nobody scorns in
the paint, just hopefully the United States shooters.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
It would have been like we talked about last week, me,
you and your son going against Caitlyn Clark and she's
just blocking us. You know what I mean. I'm not
having fun at all.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
Take me out, Coach. I want to play no more.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
We're all looking like we got to get some stilts
just to have a chance. And it's still not gonna happen.
But I'm glad that you did have a had a
good time. You got to watch these games because for
competitive sports, it's the great it's a great thing to
see the best of the best, right and yes, always
be grateful. Uh that's sitting in my living room or
(06:59):
like I said, in the parking lot at ACE that
I can sit there and get this all the way
from Paris, France or wherever they hosted. It's an amazing thing.
So I hope that all the listeners got something from
the Olympics. There's gonna be six new sports added to
the twenty twenty eight Olympics, including baseball and softball, lacrosse, cricket, squash,
(07:19):
and my favorite flag football, so I'm excited about that.
If nothing else, I would just do a quick rundown
of the medal totals. So the United States had a
total of one hundred and twenty six medals. That is
forty gold, forty four silver, and forty two bronze. So
and they were thirty five medals clear of the next
(07:40):
next country. So I thought that was great. So shout
out to everyone who you know, did their thing, brought
home a medal. Who's in this country. I mean, we
have superstars like Gabby Thomas, who is just an awesome
track athlete, just just totally killed the game. She was
the first woman to win three Golds and track and
(08:03):
field since it's Alison Felix in twenty twelve, so just amazing.
I love the sports history aspect of it. Katie Ledecki
in the pool Hikarie Richardson again in track, like it's
just we have It's cool to see these athletes who
just obviously they're so far down the list here in
America on this biggest stage in performing. It's just an
(08:26):
amazing thing to say.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
Yes, it is. It was so amazing that hopefully they
can raise the bar up for future athletes that are
going to represent for the twenty twenty eight Olympics. And
they're they're leaders, and hopefully we can bring out the
best from the next athletes coming up.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
Absolutely, and we got to keep it rolling. And I
like a little bit of adversity, you know. I like
that China was pushing us, and you know, I think
they finished with thirty eight or thirty nine total gold medals,
So it was it was not a guarantee to have that,
and I know it's it's all of our bragging rights
and pride, but it was, you know, it's it's really
really good to see, especially amongst the various sports, to
(09:07):
see where we're deficient and where we just absolutely dominate,
Like yeah, basketball games and you know, to see Steph
Curry and Lebron James and Kevin Durant on the same
floor for possibly the last time, assuming they don't all
make All Star team this year. That's that was a
really really special thing and definitely something I'm gonna take away.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
Yes, that was very, very awesome. I like to see
other Olympic countries, like, like you said, China that was
right there behind us. I just I just I'm just
in awe of like the effort and the time that
they put in to be become these athletes. And I
was just amazed of all these other athletes coming in
(09:51):
and showing what they're they're good at and what their
their abilities are. And that was that was awesome. I
can't wait to twenty twenty oh.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
Absolutely. One of the things that stood out for me
was the fastest man in the world at least in
one hundred meter dash, which was Noah Lyles, and the
fact that he was favored to win the two hundred meter,
which is his strong strongest event, very braggadocia is very loud,
but he ended up getting the bronze. But the amazing
thing about it was the fact that he was diagnosed
(10:20):
with COVID, and I've had COVID multiple times. The last
thing I'm thinking is I want to run you know,
spread two hundred meters in less than twenty seconds and
to take home a bronze in that event. You know,
he got trashed a lot because he's very boisterous, he
talks a lot. But I still I thought that was
an amazing, amazing thing.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
And with COVID he can't breathe or anything. You know,
it was like, like you said, it's the last thing
you want to do is run, and the call musing
this guy is just to see how competitive and like
he mount somewhere else but just a competitive part of him.
It was just awesome.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
Yeah, just great to see. And again, I track and
field is something I regret not doing in high school,
but I absolutely will stop and watch one hundred two hundred.
Obviously some controversy, some historical controversy in terms of men's
track and field, specifically in the four by one where
we could not handle the baton again, And you know,
(11:19):
it's not to point blame. I don't think they really
developed the chemistry that it goes to show you can't
just step on step up to the Olympics and win
solely on talent. You have to have chemistry and team
events and just how they blew it from the first
leg to the second leg in the exchange, it just
it put us behind. Canada was able to take home
(11:40):
the gold in that one hundred meter or four by
one final, and it just is amazing to see. It
just goes to show you you never know who's going
to come out on top. And for us to continuously
have these things, I remember the old teams with Mike
Rogers and Justin Gatlin and track and field and still
(12:01):
having these same issues. It's like we're forever played in
the four x one.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
And are we cursed? Are we curse?
Speaker 2 (12:07):
It's it's hard to say curse because it's like you
look at this metal count and you look how well
individually some of these athletes perform and bring home the
gold and dominant fashion. Look at Sydney Sidney McLaughlin uh
and she just absolutely dominant her sport. And look at
Gabby Thomas I mentioned before, and Carrie Richardson. And so
(12:29):
I can't say we're curse because we do have so
much success, especially individually, and you know these names, you
see these faces, but in terms of and I don't
know if it's just arrogance, if it's not enough time
practicing and here. I'll couple that with this because I
was talking to my father in law. Going back to basketball,
we give our top athletes five weeks essentially to get
(12:51):
ready for Team USA basketball, and then we send them
out there against the world teams like Serbia, teams like Germany.
Look at all the Canadian stars that have all the
over the years. They have years and years of chemistry
that they build, and it shows team basketball and basketball
IQ are what make the difference between a good team
playing Feba style basketball in the Olympics and a bad team.
(13:14):
And it's it's clear that not everyone has that basketball IQ.
On Team USA. You'll see Devin Booker's got it. He
played his role, got a lot of minutes. Lebron James, obviously,
Steph Curry, Kevin Durant. But when Bam was out there
and he's losing guys on the baseline and giving up
easy buckets, teams like Serbia are going to kill us.
Teams like Germany, you're gonna kill us. So I think
(13:37):
if we moving forward, if we want to compete, especially
twenty twenty eight and beyond, do what they're doing in
FEEDBA basketball. I don't care if you have to go
overseas and recruit one of those coaches from Serbia to
help get these guys in order. They need to themselves
commit to spending more time because that gold medal game
was a lot closer than you know, hopefully people everybody. Yeah,
(13:58):
Steph needed every one of those three. Beautiful performance by
him because he's not really clutch, clutch right over fourteen
in those clutch situations to go up to take the
lead or tie, it's not really his thing to be clutch,
but he is. He showed that on the world stage
where he put everybody to sleep with those three. It
was an amazing thing to see.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
It was it was and like you said, chemistry, man,
they've been playing for like years and years and years
and we just gotta this so happened. And lucky that
we have enough talent that we can overcome those years
and years of chemistry. And like you said, that was
awesome about Steph Curry. He did wonderful through the whole Olympics.
(14:41):
I think if anything in the MVP of that team
will be Steph Curry throughout the whole Olympics.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
And he didn't get it. Actually it was Lebron James.
Do you have a problem with.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
That, No, no problem at all. But the thing that
Steph did was amazing. He will just step back, turn around,
hit those trees from like like thirty feet. It was crazy.
And like that Servia that the team against Djokis. Uh yeah, Serbia,
(15:12):
we needed every like like you said, we needed every
part of that that shot that Steph did and I'm
just glad he hit it. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
Well he hit thirty seven points one shy of Carmelo
Anthony's Team USA record. They needed every bit of his points.
I saw a stat that said, Steph Curtis, did you.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
See that that that that guy from Serbia. He did
that LaMelo thing that got them everybody all pumped up
or like yeah, he celebration. He always goes like this.
He that that the kid number seven. I forgot his name,
but he he was killing us the whole game as
he singing, Anne was beating us. That he did this.
(15:55):
Then Team USA has turned on a switch and that
was it. Will was coming back and I was like, wow,
I like the balls on this guy. You see, don't
don't poke the bear when it's you know.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
Yeah, And they did literally pop Lebron. Remember he got
all upset. They were up I think thirteen fourteen points
and someone with the last name that ends in v
C Viitch. Everybody's Viitch, you know. And on that team
they were killing You're right on three pointers. They were
very disciplined in taking if the US felt they were
(16:28):
snapping those threes and we fell behind quick, but they
did poke the bear doing the signs getting everybody pumped up.
It was a star studded group. You had everybody from
Scottie Pippen to Draymond Green to Stefan Marberry. Melo was there, Hello,
of course was there?
Speaker 1 (16:44):
You know? Did he turn around and did that to Mellow?
Speaker 2 (16:46):
I don't know, but it goes to show you when
players do that that it's that American cultural cultural influence
that's in the game, right that you want to.
Speaker 1 (16:55):
Oh no, you never just did that too much? This
my boy.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
Yeah, And they were not having that and that, you.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
Know what I said. It was like pride. You're like, oh,
hell no, this guy just joining us off like that.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
Yeah, No, it was Look if that was a great game.
If you never saw it, of course, you know the outcome.
USA won the gold, But go back and watch that
game against Serbia. It was a nail biting clutch performance.
I was saying, I was gonna say earlier Steph Curry.
I saw a stat had twenty nine points total through
the first five games they played, and I think the
(17:30):
last two he had sixty points something like that, Like
three point percentage went through the room. He just went off.
And so it was really, really, really incredible to see.
And I'm glad that you know, you're as excited about
it as I am.
Speaker 1 (17:44):
You know, I was pumped.
Speaker 2 (17:46):
Yeah, And I don't know, he kept looking over at
Draymond Green every time he was like hitting them baskets.
I don't know if he was John with him or
if he was saying like, yeah, you came to see this,
now you got it, or if he was getting hyped.
But you Draymond's got a lot to say. They said
he showed up just so he can bag on Rudy Gobert. Oh,
And I just think like he is just so petty,
(18:08):
you know what I mean. And I don't know. I
don't listen to his podcast, but Draymond Green is something else, Yes,
something else. I actually met him one time. He's a
really nice guy, really nice guy.
Speaker 4 (18:19):
But yeah, look, man with that in the bag, like
I said, Team USA one of the best games you
could ever see. Would you say that this twenty twenty
four team is better than the dream team the ninety
two Dream team?
Speaker 2 (18:36):
Oh lord, I mean you were.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
Oh wow, that's a good question.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
Think about it for a second, because obviously there were
some factors. Larry Bird was on that team, but he
was a shell of himself. He didn't even play after
that season. After that game, Magic Johnson was a year
removed from his HIV scare Michael. I mean, he was
still coming into his prime and you know, doing his thing.
But I mean, if you look at the different era
(19:01):
of basketball, obviously now is the three ball. Back then
was more team ball. So I would still give the
Edge team ninety two just on that basis that I
saw how well a Serbia team with only Joker played
this team. I saw how well the France team played
this team. I think up and down that ninety two roster,
you have more guys that can handle the moment because
(19:22):
if you start with or start with Lebron Steph Kevin Durant,
guys that were touching the ball down the stretch, it
drops off after that. If Booker was the primary ball handle,
there could have been more turnovers, and there was a
lot of turnovers already. If bam Adebayo, Anthony Edwards who
had a little wrap around his wrist or his ribs,
you know, if Therese Haliburton and Jason Tatum had to
(19:46):
come off the bench and contribute, we would have been
in some trouble without the big dog, Steph Curry, Lebron
James and Kevin Durant. So, I mean, what are your
thoughts on that.
Speaker 1 (19:57):
That's a tough one because they can't play Dad Barkley
dead Malone, Dad Patrick dead, the.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
David Robinson Robinson Okay, he's seven to right there. So
you had already a lot more size than we could
have handled. Like joelan b did his thing, and Team
USA did need Jolan b maymbe. We were blasting him
even on this podcast saying he was lugging up and
down the court. It really was a matchup thing because
of fast it was. It was too much for him,
so he didn't get playing time. But then they needed
(20:30):
Joel and bid during against Serbia, him taking joke as
one on.
Speaker 1 (20:33):
One, somebody got to take the joker. You know who else.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
Would have done it? Kevin Durant's tooth in. He's tall enough,
but he's tooth in. You can't ask Lebron James to
give everything on the defensive end.
Speaker 1 (20:43):
I think the Davis, I think jokers just would bully him.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
But he does. He bullies him, so you know, it's
it's amazing. I'm glad Joelan b got his. He definitely
got booed every time by the France crowd, you know,
and had to deal with getting his gold medal. He
got food and you know him, he just eggs it on.
But it was really really, like I said, it was
a really exciting time for men's and women's basketball, and
(21:10):
you know for the women only women by one point.
I guess they really could have used Caitlyn Clark town
because even if she could have given you one three,
I'm gonna reach you some stats here too, just because
I just thought this was so interesting, because people don't
miss this stuff. The people that love Kaitlyn Clark Can
thinks she should have absolutely been on our team. They
(21:31):
are digging deep. Deana Tarassi, who is a w NBA legend, right.
Speaker 1 (21:35):
She's legend legend.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
She's I think she's forty one, forty two years old.
Uh so, let me just read you her stats for
the Olympic. The Olympic games, she had fifty five total
minutes played, so that's averaging about nine just over nine
minutes per game. Six points, so that's one point per
game on two of twelve shooting sixteen percent.
Speaker 1 (21:57):
Oh.
Speaker 2 (21:58):
She had four rebounds, assists, one steal, two turnovers, and
six fouls total. And she was benched for the gold
medal game. You suck. So people get this information, which
the stats were hard to find. People were really digging
and finding this stuff. They're saying, and Caitlin Clark couldn't
have been on this team, how you know what I mean?
(22:20):
So she could easily be on this deep Yeah, no, she.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
She could have.
Speaker 2 (22:24):
And I saw that they were hounding, and Angel Reese
came out saying, let these these ladies have their time now.
We will have our time in forty.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
Because in twenty eight, watch out, these younger ladies are coming.
Speaker 2 (22:36):
Yeah, you're gonna have Juju Watkins coming out of USC.
She'll be Reese, you know, Jackie Young doing her thing.
Like if Chelsea Gray is there, y'all gonna be all right,
because man, she is very exciting to watch she could
distribute that ball. But again, I'd like that they were
met with adversity. You know, you had Kelsey Plumb doing
her thing, making some cutch shots down the stretch, and
(22:58):
you know Asia Wilson. Of course they needed her. She'll
be a three time WNBA MVP at the end of
the season. Just amazing, Tom, And I'm really glad that
we were covering WNBA basketball so that we can transition
and cover this. But let's take a quick commercial break,
and when we come back, we're gonna talk rocky quarterbacks
(23:19):
and what your thoughts were that, because I would love
to hear that. So let's take a quick commercial break. Hey, folks,
don't you just hate it when you're in an argument
with your spouse or you're not feeling good or just
got laid off and you have to hear music sounds
(23:39):
like this drives me nuts. These commercials think they know
is best for us. No, I don't want your thirty
percent off on Tuesday's calls. And you know what else,
I'm gonna go out of my way to not shop
at your story just because your commercial music was so annoying.
So yeah, moving forward, I'm not doing business with you.
Coles has been a taple in my fashion life for
(24:01):
the better part of two decades. Without they might still
be dressed in horizontal multi stripe T shirts and high
water skinny jeans, not to mention the fact that they
do Coles cash. I mean, come on, I'd be a
full naughty right. This was not a advertisement by Goles.
Speaker 1 (24:12):
Oh baby, that was good?
Speaker 2 (24:14):
All right, welcome back, brother, No, let's talk some NFL man.
We had a lot of rookie quarterbacks in play for
the first time. We got to see the number one
overall draft pick, Caleb Williams out of USC do his thing,
Jayden Daniels for the Washington Commanders, Drake May JJ McCartney
with the Vikings, and Bo Knicks with my Broncos like
(24:35):
there was a there was a lot to see. What
are your takeaways on that? Who stood out.
Speaker 1 (24:41):
To you the first draft? He took against a okay
Buffalo's defense, and they're not good. They're decent, but not
as good. But he was making some plays check Downds.
He read the field perfect, I think, and I think
(25:01):
he did good. I think that's I think he's worked
at number one pick.
Speaker 2 (25:07):
He looked good. He did look good. I got his
numbers here, four of seven passing ninety five yards, zero touchdowns,
but looked like the game wasn't too fast. Yeah, and
you would think some people listening, well.
Speaker 1 (25:21):
He's the number one pier Greef Chris.
Speaker 2 (25:26):
You know, like listen, we can only go by what
we saw. The man only threw seven passes here, completed
four of them.
Speaker 1 (25:35):
You know.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
I liked the distribution. I liked that he looked poised
even in the pocket. The little flip, you know, a
little pass that he did, got a lot of run
after the catch. So for for me, a rookie quarterback,
the only thing you need to come in and do
is not turn the ball over and get the ball
into your hands. And your playmakers and the Bears playmakers,
they have a lot.
Speaker 1 (25:56):
You have a lot of playmakers, a lot playmakers, Yeah,
I think, I think. And they when they drafted, before
they drafted the new Deals were getting Kido Williams and
they pick up all this Kenyan Allen and all this
uh weapons for him. So when he comes, when he
transitions to the NFL, I think it's gonna be lots
more for that rookie because he has a lot of
(26:17):
playmakers to go to and and not just only just
one playmaker, and in this you get a lot to
distribute around and use his feat work and his arms.
Speaker 2 (26:30):
Absolutely no, he's this guy's the limit and with all
the talent that's around him, Cole Comet and tight end
Roman Dune's a rookie wide receiver out of Washington. We
know what DJ Moore did as a wide receiver, number
one wide receiver last year over a thousand yards. Excellent,
excellent move in the chains. As long as, like I said,
as this guy uh continues to improve throughout the week,
(26:51):
I think he could possibly have a CJ. Stroud like season.
I think that the ceiling is that high for him.
Yes that with the talent around him, I think they
can compete in NFC North that has young quarterbacks. I
mean going back to JJ McCarthy, he look at his
numbers eleven of seventeen, one hundred and eighty eight yards,
so there was a lot of good and a lot
(27:12):
of bad. The one interception, of course, a lot of
good and some bad in there. But now he's already
hurt and hampering. So you've got basically Sam Darnold in there,
pinned in to start the season. Oh lord, So that's
that's you know, say what you want about that. I
thought he looked good. If I'm a Vikings fan, I'm
optimistic because you know, Kirk Cousins is not walking through
(27:33):
that door again, you know what I mean, and him
get case Keenum at this point. But I think that,
you know, my favorite so far if I'm watching, and
I don't want to be a homer, but bo Nicks
fifteen of twenty one, one hundred and twenty five yards
and a touchdown, some good and some bad. Like I said,
but he looked He looked poised, you know, a little
(27:56):
bit jittery in the pocket, but that's to be expected.
And I'm glad that even though he didn't start the game,
he is slated to start this upcoming game, a preseason
game I think on Saturday, and so it's I'm anxious
to see what he looks like with the ones. But
to me, I feel like at twelve we got a
good one. And you know, there was six quarterbacks taken
(28:17):
I think total. See the last one, second to last
one in that in that first round. So I'm optimistic
to see if we can just hanker down on defense
and get him some to you know, avoid the long
third downs. We should be okay with Sean Payton. I
mean he is a Super Bowl winning coach and a
quarterback guru. I don't really believe. Yeah, by golly, he's
(28:39):
a weasel.
Speaker 1 (28:42):
Well, I think Bonus is gonna be good rookie quarterback.
Best friend is a running game, and you guys do
have a good running game with Javonte Williams. Give him
the rock, you make it like two times, maybe get
like a turn in short and who knows, you know,
this kid might be good.
Speaker 2 (29:02):
Absolutely, And it's more coaching matters. I said before. Coaching
matters the most in football, and it's setting people up.
Just like you mentioned, Caleb Williams is total setup. He
has a way better situation than Justin Fields just a
few years ago had coming out of Ohio State. Then yeah,
Williams has. And it shows when a franchise is an
(29:24):
investing into their product. You know, we as the fans benefit,
specifically the fans of that team. So I'm excited. I
really am to see Jayden Daniels go two of three
forty five yards in a touchdown for the Commanders. I
would love to see the NFC East get shaken up.
Speaker 1 (29:42):
You know.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
I think the Cowboys are going to take a step
back this season. They're not paying CD. Dak still hasn't
been paid.
Speaker 1 (29:49):
I think the Commander is going to take a couple
of a couple of steps forward this year. Yeah. They
got a good defense over there, they have weapons over there,
they got scary Terry, they got a good run game
with Bryan Robinson. Yeah, he's he's a good back.
Speaker 2 (30:05):
He can stay healthy, he's good.
Speaker 1 (30:07):
Yes.
Speaker 2 (30:07):
I think finished second in the NFC East. I think
the Eagles take it, maybe by game or two, because
they start out fast. They'll go six, seven to zero,
and then other teams will run them down. So I
think the Eagles finish the top of the NFC East.
Then I have the Washington Commanders finishing behind them, maybe
a game or two for a wild card. I have
Cowboys finishing third this season. I think the defense, Yeah,
(30:31):
and the defense is going to be there. The offense
will be out of sync because, like I said, Dak
and Seedy don't have pay and I think the Giants
just giveaway too much. Saquon Barkley is going to run
up and down the field on his old team, twice
a year. Uh. He always plays well during against Dallas
if he's not hurt. And I think that's the way
that's going to play out in the NFC East. Let's
(30:53):
say you.
Speaker 1 (30:54):
Eagles, like I said, they got a good running they
got a good, good running line up. Parkety's gonna be good,
Hurts is gonna be good. Uh yeah, I think it's
the same. I'm gonna go with you with this Commanders,
Cowboys and Giants.
Speaker 2 (31:11):
I'm optimistic obviously with the Commanders and a rookie quarterback,
but I think he's got it. And Jason Daniels was
no slouch. I mean he is the reigning Heisman Trophy
winning quarterback. The Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks don't really translate
or having historically, but every so often you get one.
You get a Robert Griffin the third in his rookie season, surprise,
and you're going to the Pro Bowl, going to the playoffs.
(31:32):
You know, we saw last year c J. Stroud and
getting that playoff victory for the Texans. That franchise was
supposed to be booby right, and they turned around and
did their things. So you know, I'm really glad, you know,
to see that and I like that you can have
things shake up. Like I said, another second year quarterback
I'm looking forward to seeing is Anthony Richardson with the Coles.
(31:55):
See if he can come back from injury and play
a different games.
Speaker 1 (31:58):
That kid was doing good the last the first fourth
season of the game. I'm excited to watch this kid play. Man.
He's he reminded me of a Cam Newton kind of frame, big, huge,
he has a good arm. He has a good arm.
The st any thing separates him from Cam Newton. But yeah,
and he has a good offensive line and a running
game with him he has he has good weapons on
(32:20):
the outside with downs and what's his name, Pittman.
Speaker 2 (32:25):
And they signed him too. I think. I know my
wife always drafts him because he smiles in his pictures,
so that's I think. But he produces. And speaking of Fantasy,
you you drafted this week. You tell the listeners about it.
You just kind of early one preseason game in too.
I guess if you count the Hall of Fame game,
you guys have already drafted. Tell me about your team.
Speaker 1 (32:47):
Yes, I was on the tenth pick. I ended up
with Jamar Chase. I was surprised. He lasted that long.
Then it came back with Pukakua and.
Speaker 2 (32:58):
My hotel looking right there.
Speaker 1 (33:01):
Yeah. Then, uh, I couldn't believe it. Jonathan Taylor was
there in the third, so I took him as my
second running back. Then I came back with Marvin Harrison junior.
Speaker 2 (33:14):
Oh rookie, Okay, I couldn't.
Speaker 1 (33:16):
Believe he dropped the fork. So and then when I
came back again, I took mcbrie and that's that end
for the Cardinals. And I got Connor from from the
from from the six rounds. So I got a lot
of Cardinals team.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
As long as those bye weeks don't add to'll be
good that that is funny wearing a Rams hat and
you got some Cardinals. Marvin Harrison, I know, I can understand.
I understand that completely.
Speaker 1 (33:40):
That kid is for real, man, that kid is for real.
With him looking up with Kyler Murray and I was
I was thinking of grabbing Kyler Murrow was like, no, no, no,
I don't think I should be doing that. So I
ended up with Joe Burrow.
Speaker 2 (33:55):
Okay, so got Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase. Now they
do have great connection. Obviously that's the big gambling right there.
But I like your combination and the fact that you
went ten is it ten total or is it twelve total?
Snake draft?
Speaker 1 (34:10):
So you got to go boola back to back picks.
Speaker 2 (34:13):
Well, you know what you got it. I like what
you did about that. You know, I told you before
I drafted twelve the last two years and you just
got to be smart. You got to hit on those picks.
So as long as you stay healthy, you should be good.
And I like to see that.
Speaker 1 (34:28):
I just praying for healthy. I'm just praying for healthy
right now.
Speaker 2 (34:31):
I know before because you were you were telling me
you basically just joined the league. And then you get
the donator. You're just like, I don't I'm just giving
up my money right oh.
Speaker 1 (34:42):
Long, like take my money, take my money.
Speaker 2 (34:44):
Please, put the money in the bag. Brother, put the
money in the bag. So I'm glad to hear that
you had a good time. And you know, I don't
know how many leagues you're in total. You don't have
to say, but I'm glad that you are excited and
you feel like you got a chance. If I'm looking
at that team and I'm like, oh, Jamar Chase and
Joe Burrow combination, that's already you know something to mess with.
(35:07):
And you know Marvin Harrison Junior could be the best
rookie coming out of that class. Him or Elik Neighbors
or Roma. Dude, we just talked about.
Speaker 1 (35:14):
Don't sweep on Neighbors. He's he's a good route runner
and he's fast. That kid is fast.
Speaker 2 (35:20):
He could be fast and run all the routes he won.
But the ball is gonna go over his head by
ten yards because it's Daniel Jones.
Speaker 1 (35:26):
And that's all Daniel Jones.
Speaker 2 (35:30):
By golly, he's a weasel.
Speaker 1 (35:32):
I like the balls on this guy. Giants fans don't
have nothing to be excited about.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
Here. Listen here, the Jets are still running that town. Yes,
you think they're gonna win a top the in the
AFC East, Well, so we did the NFC East. Give
me the AFC East real quick, just top to bottom,
one through four. Who's winning it? Uh, just give me
a quick synopsis of that.
Speaker 1 (35:54):
Well, I got the Jets winning it. You got over
Buffalo and over Buffalo and over my okay, and I
get Miami's second, Buffalo third, and.
Speaker 2 (36:04):
You think Buffalo falls all the way?
Speaker 1 (36:07):
Yeah, they almost of their playmakers goal I couldn't believe
that Digs is gone. I think Davis too, gave Davis
is gone too.
Speaker 2 (36:19):
They still got cooked, right, I'm not sure which cook,
James James Cook. They got him. They still got Sharif.
I wasn't name, I can't think. I think I was
thinking of it. Mon Khalif the boxer from Algeria about
to go knock somebody out. Oh but she ainate, so
going update on that real quick. She took home the gold.
So I thought, out of all the controversy and everything
(36:42):
that she faced, that she was able to overcome and
get the gold medal in women's boxing.
Speaker 1 (36:48):
Nice.
Speaker 2 (36:49):
I don't know exactly how that concluded, but it was
cool to see that outcome because there there was there's
so much controversy in the Olympics, and and it is
going on with your in childs right now and them
taking her medal away five days after the fact due
to a four second technicality, Like it's just it's just
an amazing thing. So how can somebody so beautiful be
(37:11):
so sad?
Speaker 1 (37:12):
That's crazy so sad.
Speaker 2 (37:15):
I mean, we'll see where that goes. We have to
stay reporting on that. But man, look, wait, who's finishing
you gotta give me a third place and fourth place
in AFC East.
Speaker 1 (37:28):
Oh, I was going with the Bills third.
Speaker 2 (37:31):
And the Patriots.
Speaker 1 (37:35):
Patriots is gonna be last.
Speaker 2 (37:37):
Yeah, Okay, Now, I guess I wasn't paying attention.
Speaker 1 (37:39):
My bad, But you gotta give me your prediction on these.
Speaker 2 (37:45):
I think I think it's gonna go the I think
the Bills are still gonna take it to well in
cold weather. I think it's gonna go Bills. Then Dolphins.
Jets played better, but I think they're still a disappointment.
Not enough for retooling on the offensive line. Garrett Wilson
(38:05):
and Aaron Rodgers is gonna have some good connections. So
if you drafted anybody that drafted either one of those players,
you'll get something.
Speaker 1 (38:11):
Forget they got Ala back there.
Speaker 2 (38:13):
Yeah yeah, but I mean, look, they had all this
last year minus to Aaron Rodgers aspect, and I just
didn't see enough. Maybe Zach Wilson was the key. I
don't know who's playing for my team now, so scared.
That scares because he actually looked pretty good for his
play action fakes on against the Colts. But I look,
(38:33):
I don't want to see him anywhere near in my field.
I don't know what Sean Paby that six round draft
pick back. I'm scared. I'm sad. I don't know what's
going on. We'll do We'll do AFC West and U
you know next time we come on to the Big
Island Sports talk show. But this has been a great episode. Brother.
I'm really good to hear hear from you, talk to you,
(38:54):
and I'm I'm looking forward to seeing what's going on.
I do want to do some Island shout outs though,
I want to shout out the Central East Mally little
League baseball team is advanced to the Little Yes Williamsport.
I think that is awesome. Congratulations to them and all
that they're doing right there. It's it's a big ghett boys,
big deal just to be in contention and have a
(39:16):
chance to bring something home and represent you know, your team.
And it's just like for me, I never played little league.
I didn't get to see, you know, do any of that.
But it's it's really really cool to see so uh.
Speaker 1 (39:29):
And that and that level of competitives and talent, and
that's the peers of the peers. You're gonna have seen
no period in that they ain't getting paid this is out,
they're having fun and that's the way it supposed to
be played, you.
Speaker 2 (39:42):
Know, absolutely, man, So you know you're gonna see him
standing in front of Costco with their nets out asking
for money. And I'm like, you know what, if you
kids are out there hustling and doing that, then you
deserve to say and I will give you money. Right
And then also shout out to Micah Maha for winning
the bronze medal for men's volleyball. Well, it was a
nice picture of him and his mom showed yes, be
(40:03):
and Honolulu covering these things, so an excellent job. I'd
love to see this representing the Big Island. One more thing,
women's high school sports is getting flag football the first
new sport for women's sports in high school in over
two decades. What football is coming to the Hawaiian Islands
starting a belief this this next year or this year
(40:25):
that is coming up. So you know, all the kids
back in school, everybody doing their thing, like, you know,
have fun. Girls, get out there and do your thing
in flag football. It's it's a really amazing thing to see.
Speaker 1 (40:35):
Nice get them girls.
Speaker 2 (40:37):
So let's get at chie Hu and get out of here.
Brother Noel three two one golly, she's a weasel.
