Speaker 1 (00:00):
Gee, what is going on?

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Welcome back to this special edition of the Big Island
Sports Talk Show.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
I am Matt Parker.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
And with me nobody want to lose is not.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
Brother no No.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
It is a very special person who is near and
dear to my heart, my wife, Valerie Lundie Parker. Can
you believe it?

Speaker 3 (00:51):
I got it on here? This is crazy. Never thought.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Look, Valerie doesn't even listen to sports, doesn't watch sports.
I don't think she's even listened to this podcast.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
Most of the time.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
She's in the background when I'm recording it with brother Noel.
But I wanted to do this special edition of The
Big Island Sports Talk Show because she's shared with me
some sport event experiences and I just wanted to get
her thoughts on it.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
So, without further ado.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Folks, the wonderful, the beautiful Valerie London Parker.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
Hey, how are you doing today, Valerie?

Speaker 4 (01:22):
I'm doing good. Thank you so much for you.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
And Matthew listen to her, you know, being sweet to me.
You know, I just love that I get to do this.
I appreciate all your love and support, you know. Shout
out to my mom. She said that we should do
this special edition here so we can get your insight
and I'm glad that you joined me.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
This is great.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Just to let the audience know, Valerie has now gone
with me to three NFL football games, one in Denver,
one in Santa Clara as the home of the forty
nine Ers, and then most recently here in Las Vegas
at Allegiance Stadium for BRONC the Raiders. So I'm just
I just got to ask you a couple questions. First off,

(02:04):
what was it like? What was your experience for someone
who doesn't enjoy sports in particular?

Speaker 3 (02:10):
What were your thoughts of the NFL in person product?

Speaker 4 (02:14):
What did you think in general or any game.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
Whatever comes out? So let's start with the first one.
We went to Denver versus Minnesota Vikings Empower Empower Field
that was in Denver, Colorado last year. First NFL game
for you. What were your thoughts?

Speaker 3 (02:30):
It was cold, It was cold.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
I was very grateful for my hand warmers and my
jacket because it was freezing. But I know that that's
not what we're here to discuss.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
Well, that's part of it. No, that's part of it.
I mean that that's the thing.

Speaker 4 (02:45):
Okay, I don't.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
Care for sports.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
I know that this is not the right audience to
be saying such a statement, but I do go with
you to support you, and I enjoy the logistic aspect
of it. So when we went to Empower Field, first
of all huge, I couldn't even believe that a stadium
could be that big, And our seats were on the

(03:09):
third level, which was really cool because I thought that
we were able to see a good portion of it.
I really enjoy the vibe of it. So we walked
from our hotel to Empower Field and that was great.
We also walked to the forty nine ers and then
we did park at Allegiance Stadium, but we still got

(03:29):
to walk a little bit. I enjoy the vibe of
all of the fans. I enjoy seeing everybody dressed up. Personally,
I don't get it, but I do have. I am
fans of other things, just not sports, So I do
think that it's really cool to see everybody dressed up
in their gear, whether it's a jersey or a T
shirt or a beanie or those huge necklaces. I think

(03:51):
those are really cool. Or the people who go to
the super extreme and they're just decked out from head
to toe and their team's gear. I think that's really
cool too. I feel like if I were a sports fan,
that would be me. So I wear the Broncos colors
and the Broncos hat because I support you.

Speaker 3 (04:10):
By golly, he's a weasel.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Well that's sweet of here, and I appreciate your insight
on it. It is as maybe you do or you
don't know. Fan is short for fanatic, right, So when
you see people in dressed heads and toe and painting
their faces and just looking otherwise like they came from
the circus, that is part of the fandom, right.

Speaker 4 (04:36):
Although I have to say a highlight for me was
when we were at the forty nine Ers game and
we were watching the forty nine Ers and the Cowboys. Right, Okay,
so we were watching the forty nine Ers and the Cowboys,
and this Raiders fan kept coming to the side and
he's decked out a head to toe in his Raiders

(04:56):
gear and he's just screaming rad and we're just like,
you're at the wrong game, buddy. I don't know when
you purchase this ticket, but.

Speaker 3 (05:09):
There are no writers around here.

Speaker 4 (05:12):
So it's cool to see it seep into other parts
of it. I think my favorite stadium was is Allegiance
Stadium because it's new and it's indoors and it's comfortable ritors,
so that was really cool. The forty nine Ers Stadium
was really nice because a lot of it was outdoor
and you got to see all the stadiums are really

(05:35):
cool because they all operate very differently. And I look
at the like, I don't watch the game. I'll be honest,
I don't really watch the game. I don't really know
where the ball is. I do understand football. It's not
that I don't understand the sport. I do understand it.
I actually played full contact women's football, so I do
understand the sporty. I just don't watch it. I watch

(05:57):
what everybody else is doing. I watch the players, watch
the people who bring the players the water. I watch
the coaches, I watch the security, I watch the dancers.
I like to just see everybody come together for this
one event, and it's very very interesting to me in
that sense. I thought it was really cool at this

(06:18):
last game where we were sitting, which you got to
tell your audience how we came to this game. But
I thought it was really cool how you could just
sit there and order snacks on your app and they'll
just bring it to you. I thought that was really awesome.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
That's huge. I mean the amount of money you're paying
for these tickets.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
It is nice to know you're not going to be
spinning half of a quarter in line at the concession
stand trying to get your hot dogs.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
Because you know, the NFL is all about one thing,
show me the money. That's right, They're all about the money.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
And when you pay all this money for the tickets
and the parking and the concessions, like you want to
get the most bang.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
For your buck.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
So sitting where we were here at Allegian Stadium in
the second row was crazy. You one thing I never
thought that I would want to be attending a Broncos
Raiders game and sitting basically on the field, let alone,
sitting with my best friend my wife right there next
to me.

Speaker 3 (07:12):
Came up on some wonderful tickets.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
Shout out to Nick Spindell and his wonderful wife for
you know, making those tickets available so that me and
my wife and my two co workers can waiting to back.

Speaker 4 (07:22):
Up a little bit. So we are just sitting here
at home on last week Sunday, and Matt is getting
ready to watch his football games for the day, and
he gets a text and his group chat from work
talking about they have some tickets for free to go
to the Raiders Broncos game. Now, it wasn't even in

(07:42):
our wildest fantasy that we would be attending this game,
but Matt somehow finagled his way to get these tickets.

Speaker 3 (07:50):
I just threw my head in the ring.

Speaker 4 (07:51):
You know, I was as a Broncos fan for years
and years and years. I'm really happy that they gave
you two of the tickets and I was able to
be a part of it. But we were on the
lower level, in the second row, so that was the
closest that I have ever been to a football field,
and I could actually see the ball in what was

(08:12):
going on, and I thought that that was really cool.
I have to tell you, though, it's ruined it for
me because now every time that we go to a game,
I'm going to expect the VIP treatment. We were in
our own special lounge. Nobody was even in there. There
were no lines to get the snacks and to get
the waters and to get the food. So if you
expect me to go back to the third level, like, no, I'm.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
Not doing it show me the money. No, no, no,
we're not going there.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
And apparently inside right, my maybe likes the indoor stadium.
The staff did a wonderful job at Allegiance. You mentioned
before when we were leaving that that was the most
efficient out of the three stadiums, right, getting people in
and out.

Speaker 4 (08:52):
Getting people in and out, I felt it was really efficient.
When we went to Empower Field, there was a lot
of people there, so it took a little bit to
get through the crowd. I did, of course research what
bags are allowed. You do need a clear stadium approved
bag or they will not let you in, which I
think is great. I'm all about safety. Honestly, being around

(09:12):
that many people does give me a little bit of anxiety.
Just with the current state of the world. You never
know what's going to happen. So I love that everybody
has to basically have their stuff in a clear bag
and you have to go through the metal detector. And
I really love that part of it because I do
genuinely feel safe, especially when you're around that many people,
and that many people who are drinking. Now, as a

(09:34):
non drinker, it can be kind of wild to be
around so many drunk people, but Most people are there
to have a good time, and I appreciate that. So
I have a good time intern because I enjoyed the
vibe of everybody around me because they're into it. So
when the teams are scoring and everybody's high fiving, I'm
in there high fiving too. I don't know what I'm

(09:55):
high fiving for, but it's fun.

Speaker 2 (10:00):
It's the energy of the stadium. And we've been very
blessed the three stadiums we went to, in the sections
we were in, there were no fights, there was no buffoonery.
There are no ass clowns if you will, that are
just ruining it or getting too drunk and you know,
losing their jobs or their reputation over minute tights, which
I think is ridiculous.

Speaker 4 (10:20):
The crazy or the craziest thing that I saw, which
isn't even crazy, was the lady in front of me
at Alesian Stadium did not have a clear bag, so
they wouldn't let her in, and she got upset and
said that they kicked her out at the poor employees,
where like, we're not kicking you out. Your bag just
can't come in, like you can come in, But she
took it, you know, a little extreme and I thought

(10:41):
that you should definitely research this day and age. There's
a website, there's information, there's things that tell you what
you can and cannot bring to all events, not just
a sporting event, but anytime that you go. I urge
you like research where you're going to see what is
acceptable and what is not and that will help in
the long run. But back to what you were saying

(11:02):
about the efficiency, I thought that the Empower one was
probably the longest line. The lines at Levi Stadium were
pretty long, but they were quick. But Allegiance Stadium, I
think because it's newer, they have the infrastructure to deal

(11:22):
with all of the all the crowds that come in,
so there were the lines were very minimal. But they
also had a lot of open lanes for people to
walk in, So I thought that that part was very efficient,
even despite the lady claiming to being kicked out, which
I thought was funny because like, no, they weren't kicking

(11:43):
you out, and they made that very clear. But just
be nice to the service people. Be happy that they
showed up to work. Thank everybody who shows up. Everybody
were just we're just trying to make it. Be happy
that they're there and we're able to go to these games.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
You know, I just had one thought when again that
lady with the bag that and get in. You know,
when I was there enjoying my bliss and having this
wonderful opportunity, the only thing I thought was.

Speaker 4 (12:07):
How can somebody so beautiful be so sad?

Speaker 3 (12:13):
And I just thought, like cow, like you said, just
prepare it.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
It takes just a few seconds on many smartphones to
prepare and see what's acceptable and what's not. It is
for our safety and just you know, for there's always
going to be someone in the crowd that's just not
doing it right. You weren't even there actual for the
sport and the competition. You were there for the logistics
and the analytics behind the scenes. And two of the
games that we went to were actually Sunday night football,

(12:38):
so there was a little bit more pop and circumstance involved, right,
But everything from the performance of the national anthem and
honoring the military, the flyovers.

Speaker 4 (12:47):
That is one thing that I do appreciate about the
outdoor stadiums was the flyovers with the planes and the
fireworks and all of that jazz.

Speaker 2 (12:56):
Well, they had somebody pair of sailing in, right, overs right.
That was cool and we were lucky. Valerie loves the
cold and the thing. We did get some snow flurries
while we were in Denver, so that was pretty cool
to see. Especially living on an island for eight years,
we really do disappreciate the changing of the seasons and
being involved into all of that. But yeah, what a

(13:17):
wonderful opportunity this last game. Broncos victorious over the Raiders
twenty nine to nineteen, bringing their season total to seven
and six at the time Raiders fell to two and eight.

Speaker 3 (13:28):
It was good game.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
Thirteen nine Broncos were down at halftime. It was good
to see bo Nicks come into his own I believe
he did win the Rookie of the Month, a Rookie
of the Week for the third time, second time following
that game. But it was good to see. I mean,
we were literally right on the field. I was able
to touch a game ball, which was great. Coming out
of halftime. I got one of the guys that does

(13:50):
the special teams that actually tossed me of football.

Speaker 3 (13:53):
That's how close we were to the crowd.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
And one of the highlights for me was when they
shoot the shirts out of the cannon. Right as they
were coming back from commercial break, they tossed a shirt
up into our section and I was able to sky
for it and bring it down. Even though it was
a Raider shirt. I gifted it to my beautiful wife,
and I was grateful that that she was there next
to me, and she's even so kind. She's like, well,
maybe I'll give it to one of these Raider fans,

(14:16):
because you know we're not. But I was like, ah, no,
we're getting that shirt.

Speaker 3 (14:20):
That's ours. I worked for that.

Speaker 4 (14:22):
It was really cool to see how many Broncos fans
were in that stadium.

Speaker 2 (14:25):
Oh, we took over. We absolutely took over. The section
we were in was the majority Broncos. Shout out to
Andy and his family right in front of us. It
was really cool to see check us out on NFL Live.
I know we were on camera because we were all
up in it. My coworker Rob was even on National
televised broadcast, even for just a second when they panned

(14:47):
over to our section. So it was I mean, absolutely
just a wonderful opportunity. Even the game before that at
Levi Stadium with the Cowboys and the forty nine ers
on National tight End Day, Son and football.

Speaker 3 (15:00):
What a great experience.

Speaker 4 (15:02):
That was a really cool game.

Speaker 3 (15:03):
Yeah, shout out to Heidi and Myron.

Speaker 4 (15:05):
Yeah, we sat in the awesome We love them.

Speaker 3 (15:08):
Yeah, they're the best.

Speaker 4 (15:09):
We sat in the end zone for that one, and
that one was really cool to see it from that angle.
So the first time when we watched it and Empower,
we were sort of in the end zone but on
the side right. How would you describe those seats?

Speaker 2 (15:26):
Probably probably ten to fifteen yard line, but in section three,
so about ten fifteen rows from the top.

Speaker 3 (15:33):
But in Power.

Speaker 2 (15:34):
The way the stadium was built, there are no bad
seats in the house, Like you really can see everything.
It's actually kind of steep as you're walking up there, right,
So I'm like, it's crazy how people drink and navigate
those stairs. It was cold, it was very cold. And
then the second game at Levi Stadium at Santa Clara,
we were in the south end zone and a lot
of the action actually took place in that side of

(15:56):
that side of the field, and we were.

Speaker 4 (15:58):
In the first row of the second level at that stadium.

Speaker 3 (16:01):
Fantastic views, the great seats.

Speaker 4 (16:03):
That was very fun time. Heidi and I were there
for the vibe. We do not watch sports, but we
support our men, and you know, I think that it's
an important reminder that you should get involved in your
significant other's hobbies. You don't have to be there for everything,
but it's good to support them because everybody's going to
have their own hobbies. And even though I don't really

(16:27):
watch sports like that, I support you and I just
love hanging out with you and experiencing these things with you.

Speaker 2 (16:35):
I love you, and I appreciate you even taking time
to jump on this, being that you are not the
least bit really a sports fan.

Speaker 4 (16:43):
Yeah, and I'm sorry, you are correct. I have not
listened to one episode of this podcast, but I do
listen to every episode of Harping on Helper.

Speaker 3 (16:50):
She does.

Speaker 2 (16:51):
Yeah, shout out to harp On Hopper. If you're a
fan of the office, check it out Spotify. We do
what we do. It's not just a gym and bam.

Speaker 4 (16:58):
Although in my defense, I do listen to the podcast
as it's being recorded live.

Speaker 2 (17:03):
So I do get to hear every so often you're
in the background, So that's great.

Speaker 3 (17:06):
No, I appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (17:08):
Look, we're going to take a quick commercial break, and
when we come back, I want to hear your thoughts
on the Jake Paul and Mike Tyson fight when we
came back.

Speaker 3 (17:18):
It sounds like we're already getting some of those right there.

Speaker 2 (17:21):

Speaker 3 (18:18):
Oh on, by golly, he's a weasel.

Speaker 2 (18:23):
All right, welcome back to the Big Island sports talk show.
Matt Parker here with the lovely Valerie Lundy Parker. Thanks
again for being my co host. I mean, not only
you the best wife a guy could ask for it,
but to jump on that sports podcast is a wonderful
thing and I've been looking forward to getting your opinion
on these and the topic we have here Jake Povers,
Mike Tyson and know this is now a week or

(18:43):
two old, but it's something I really wanted to talk
about and get your opinion of. So, without further ado,
what are your thoughts.

Speaker 4 (18:50):
I don't know a whole lot about boxing. Is that
what they were doing?

Speaker 3 (18:55):
They were popping with junking, call it things.

Speaker 2 (18:57):
Oh yeah, they were supposed to be boxing, you know.

Speaker 4 (19:01):
So as an outside perspective, I number one don't understand
why a twenty something year old is fighting a fifty
something year old, but I do know that it has
to do with money, and so good for good for
them for getting their money. The only reason why these

(19:22):
athletes have as much money as they have is because
people are willing to watch it. So I wasn't expecting
a good fight, but the marketing was there and this
Paul idiot. You know, they know. I think there's brothers right, like,
they know how to market and they know how to
make money and people'll eat it up. So as much

(19:44):
as I don't like them, you do have to respect
the hustle.

Speaker 3 (19:47):
Got to respect the game. With the money making Netflix.

Speaker 4 (19:50):
I think that Mike Tyson could have whooped his ass,
to be honest, but I think that he did it
because whatever agreement they came to with, you know, don't
let's not beat each other up. Unlet's just both get
our bag. So, you know, again, I don't think that
it was more of a sports event versus just a
I don't know, money.

Speaker 2 (20:10):
Grab, money grab. That's the best way I would describe it.
Just as that America we got bamboozled. Okay, we got,
we got taken.

Speaker 3 (20:19):
For a ride. Anybody got we got? We got?

Speaker 4 (20:24):
We got.

Speaker 2 (20:24):
I mean I was still flabbergasted just just thinking what
was it that I saw and watching that and watching
Netflix struggle through it. You know, to put on this performance.
You got Shaq and Gronkowski. There, you got Cedric the
entertainer looking like one of those Ferrero candies.

Speaker 3 (20:42):
You got you.

Speaker 2 (20:43):
Got, I mean it was the whole spectacle, the whole
thing itself. It's just I mean, I've still just got
this other disdain of disgust that I just had to
get out because I'm thinking, when will we learn?

Speaker 3 (20:56):
Right? It was anybody nobody wanted to see for the
culture nobody.

Speaker 2 (21:00):
I'm about to lose my freaking mind exactly. It's basically
what's happening and the way I wanted to see Mike
Tyson getting knocked out by Jake Paul. We all knew
his possibilities because.

Speaker 3 (21:09):
Jake Paul can't fight.

Speaker 2 (21:12):
Yeah, but the problem is he's not fighting the people
he should be fighting.

Speaker 3 (21:16):
All Right.

Speaker 2 (21:16):
The only time he got to ring with somebody that
was on his level Tommy Fury, who actually won that fight, right, So,
but give it to him.

Speaker 3 (21:24):
A guy can fight whatever agreement that they.

Speaker 2 (21:26):
Came on and made all those millions of dollars, you know,
good for both of those guys is if they need it. Yeah,
and then you have we had to see Mike Mike
Tyson's the fifty seven year old booty cheeks hanging out.
Oh lord, It's like the whole thing just was too much, Okay,

(21:47):
And I'm just thinking how much you never again, never
get you know what, that's a that's a quick Google search.

Speaker 3 (21:53):
We could figure out.

Speaker 2 (21:54):
I'm gona get my producer to find out how much
that is while we do this. But one thing I
will say is this, I won't get got again, America.
We won't happen again. I don't care who he's fighting next.
All the spectacles they did in the pregame, and him
stepping on his shoes and walking up like an ape,
and all that Mike Tyson is slapping them, it's all

(22:16):
for show. And this is what boxing gets turned into.
This is why the crowd goes towards MMA, that's mixed
martial arts. Layman out there. That's why UFC is now
top of the game and has been for a long
time in the fighting game. And it's just a shame
because boxing has such a rich history and when you
see a spectacle of a circus like what we had

(22:40):
to witness a week or two ago, it's just saddeny.
And you know, to the true boxing fans, officionados, if
you will, you just you scoff at it. You just
it's just terrible, terrible what we saw. Good for them
hustling and getting their money. Good for you know, Netflix,
for you know break in their own servers and not

(23:02):
being able to handle it. But to the rest of
us and had to see just terrible.

Speaker 4 (23:07):
So according to Google, the purse was about eighty million
dollars well and Jake Paul was expected to earn about
half of that it so about forty million, and Mike
Tyson was expected to earn about twenty million dollars, which
is double his current net worth.

Speaker 3 (23:24):
So good for him, good for him.

Speaker 4 (23:26):
I mean, people are willing to pay it, so can
you like for me, I'm somebody who I don't really
care for sports because I don't understand how athletes get
paid so much money, but like teachers and firefighters are struggling.
But that's a whole nother discussion for a whole nother day.
So I don't really understand how they can get paid

(23:48):
so much. But at the same time, I also get
that people are willing to pay to watch these things.
So at this point, is it you don't hate the player?

Speaker 3 (24:00):
Yeah, no, this is the game and the viewership is
what it is. That's that's the only difference.

Speaker 2 (24:04):
That's why the WNBA struggles to get salaries even a
quarter of what some of the last man on the
bench is making in the NBA. It's simple numbers and viewership.
And look, maybe one of these days toll be on
the level we will see. I'm hoping that women's sports
can get up there. The LPGA is not as popular

(24:26):
as the PGA, but the PGA really isn't that popular
in terms of, you know, the large scale of sports.

Speaker 3 (24:31):
Right, there are levels to this.

Speaker 2 (24:34):
As the kids say, or used to say, I don't
know what's gas and what's fire and all the terminology.

Speaker 3 (24:39):
I don't keep up with that.

Speaker 4 (24:40):
I am almost forty years old. I have no idea
what you were talking about.

Speaker 2 (24:44):
Yeah, yeah, well, I mean I understand that it's sports,
and I'm trying to be hip and cool to the
little listeners. So but most of the listeners there, you
know what they're saying to me, shu and I will
I understand. I stand when I'm doing too much. But look,
I just love you so much and thank you.

league that we are in, which consists of twelve total people.
I believe it's Matt's high school football group, so I
appreciate that they let me play. I've played with them
for the.

Speaker 3 (25:26):
Last six seven years.

Speaker 4 (25:28):
Yeah, it's been a long time. And I don't watch
the game. I just look at the data and the analytics,
and I pick my players based off of how they
have currently performed, and I read what people have to
say about them, and I choose based off of that.
But the most important thing that I do when I

(25:49):
choose my team is I make sure that they are
smiling in their photo, because if you are getting paid
that amount of money, you better look happy like you
bet be happy as can be if you're getting paid.
I don't even know how much these people get paid.

Speaker 3 (26:06):
There's a lot. I want to know it's a lot,
but not as much.

Speaker 4 (26:09):
But I just wanted to bribe because you and I
are playing next week and I am going to kick
your But she's.

Speaker 3 (26:14):
Going down, folks, and we'll we'll find out what.

Speaker 2 (26:17):
I have to post it on the Big Island Sports
talk show Instagram just to see my wife is nine
to four. She is locked down the second seed, which
almost guarantees her a bye depending on this final week,
which is me first her, and look, we'll see Lamar
Jackson's on the buy. I'm going to be scrambling on
the waiver wire to find somebody.

Speaker 3 (26:36):
We'll see. My team is stacked, valorous team is stacked.

Speaker 4 (26:39):
She's three players on buy. But I've got a great bench,
so I'm not worried.

Speaker 2 (26:43):
She's got Saquon Barkley, she's got him, Alvin Kamara got him,
Scary Terry McLaurin got him.

Speaker 3 (26:50):
Her team is stacked.

Speaker 4 (26:51):
I've got Patrick Mahomes, but.

Speaker 2 (26:53):
He's got Yeah, she's got two good quarterbacks, but she's
playing the quarterback carouself.

Speaker 3 (26:58):
So we'll see how that plays out.

Speaker 4 (26:59):
Maybe every single week.

Speaker 3 (27:01):
Yeah, we'll see. We'll see how we have stacked team.

Speaker 4 (27:04):
It doesn't matter who plays.

Speaker 3 (27:06):
Listen to this.

Speaker 2 (27:07):
