all the way from Fort Collins, my cousin Jonathan. Jonathan,
how are you feeling today?

I'm doing well, man, Thanks, thanks for having me. I'm
glad to be here. Talk somebout exciting sports here. It
would be fun.

Well, of course, man, when you know how we do
on the Big Island sports talk show, I mean me
and Brother No are pros at this now episode Yeah no,
kid me let me pat myself on the back here.
But no, we appreciate you taking time out of your day,
both of you, in fact, pulling you away from your families,
because you know, sports is timeless and we want to
keep this rolling. Things happen, We want to talk about it.

We have our opinions and You've got some insight on
a sport that I'd like to be a little better
talking at a sport that people really do enjoy. Not
on the Islands, because we ain't playing no hockey out there,
but we want to hear. We want to hear what
makes this season special. We're going to get into that.
We're gonna start off with some NBA regular season. It's
coming down to a close, so we got to talk seating,

we gotta talk MVP, and we got to talk about
these championship coaches getting fired. I gotta see what's going
on here. But yeah, without further ado, let's let's get
this thing started. So we know NBA is just wrapping
up and it's it's been pretty exciting season. I mean,
you've listened to the episodes, Jonathan, you know, brother Nola
is a hardcore Lakers fan. I'm gonna throw it to you,

brother Noel. Lakers finished with the third seed. What are
your thoughts? Man?

Speaker 1 (02:00):
Oh man, I love it. I thought it was going
to be more lower than that. The way it was plumbing.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
I love that word plumbing, especially because I keep it real.
They were going backwards for some time. They were going backwards,
but fifty wins. JJ Reddick's first season as NBA head coach.
We had our doubts. You know, I had my doubts.
I think you have to prove a lot mm hmm,
but you got it done.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
Yeah, and shot him in the turnoff. That's all I get.
That's a good seae. We couldn't catch the other two,
there's no way.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
But yeah, they're not catching the other the top two
in the West, in.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
The top the top two being Oklahoma City Thunder finished
the top of the West, which to no surprise, they
were running away with it all season long, finishing with
a record of sixty seven and fourteen and eight and
two in their last ten games. So they are hot
at the right time. And then right below them, Emandoku's
Houston Rockets new team. But my goodness, did they show

out fifty two and twenty nine.

I got.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
I gotta say, I was not expecting them, these two
young teams uh to jump up there and be leading
the Western Conference standings. Of course, injuries did play a
part in some of these things here, But I mean
I'm looking. I'm looking at the Lakers seven and three
over their last ten min it's third in the West.
You gotta be feeling pretty good.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
You gotta get kind of hot going into the playoffs,
you know.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Oh, you better get your stuff together, man, and were
making a playoff.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
Runt brop.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
Absolutely, and some teams are some teams are kind of
just barely sneaking in there. One of those teams being
the Denver Nuggets five and five over their last ten games. Obviously,
we know they fired their championship winning head coach just
what a week or so ago, And that's I don't
understand the motive.

Speaker 4 (03:53):
John's a huge surprise. Yeah, I want to hear your
thoughts going on.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
Yeah, so when you, Jonathan, you heard the news. Obviously
you're the closest in proximity to it. Yeah, and what
what was the sentiment around around Colorado? What? Yeah, it was.

Speaker 4 (04:09):
It was crazy. Some of my friends are like, what
the heck's going on here?

Speaker 2 (04:13):
You know?

Speaker 4 (04:13):
And then and then it's all over the news to
the local news of course. Uh, they just didn't understand it.
I mean, I don't think any of us in Colorado
really understand it stood the move. It's like fighting for
a playoff spot and you got Joker averaging a triple
double the in the for the season. You know, like,
come on, how do you fire a coach like that?

That's crazy? Yeah, I don't I.

Don't think that at all. And you fired him that's crazy?

Speaker 4 (04:40):
Well big time.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
I mean I guess I guess having a championship in
your back pocket doesn't mean squat anymore in the NBA.
And it's just it's continuing a trend, right, I'm looking
at a list of coaches with championships that have been
fired by the team they won with. So let's go
back to twenty nineteen the Raptor one, right, that was
that magical Kawhi Leonard season. The head coach didn't Nick Nurse,

all right. He got canned four years after that, right, Yeah,
so that was kind of a surprise to some people.
Even more recently, Frank Bogel, which you know, brother Nole,
is your head coach there with the LA Lakers. Again, Budd,
he won that Bubble Championship championship. I mean, it still
counts as a championship, but you know, to each his

own about that. But he was fired in twenty twenty two,
so two years later, right, and they gave him the boot.
I think you boy and Lebron had something to do
about that, But I'm just gonna bite my tome on that.
And then most recently my head coach with the Phoenix Suns,
which we'll talk about him later, Mike Botenholzer. We know
he won the twenty twenty one ship with the Bucks

against my sons, and now he was fired two years
later too. So oh man, George rolling up and there
in his wheelchair. What is it about? I thought having
a championship caliber coach was at least going to guarantee
you what, five years, But that's not the case.

Speaker 4 (06:10):
It's crazy.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
I don't get it.

Speaker 4 (06:15):
I would want a championship coach on my side, I'm sorry.
I'd give him more than just a couple of years.
He would definitely get at least five, especially if he's
won multiple championships. Hell, I might give him a decade,
you know, I mean, just just just because he knows
how to win. He knows, you know, what it takes

to actually compete every year, especially if it's multiple championships.
It's like you got to have that. You know, they
want it on the from the player's side, but to
have it from a coach, that's a different perspective, and
it's huge in my opinion. They just they just shoot
themselves in the foot. I think, I don't know how
Dever's gonna Dever's gonna fare in the playoffs, but I

don't expect them going past the second round or anything
like that.

Really, so wow, Oh yeah, I mean, that's that's really
saying something considering the fact he said earlier about the
Jokers playing the best basketball he's ever played, and that's
that's a pretty amazing thing to say, considering he's already
got the two MVPs under his belt. Arguably, you know,
has a shot for the third one here, should have
had the one over Joel Embiid. But you know that's

we don't control the voting, right, we just go with it.
But even with that core, you still think possibly second
round exit. You don't think that inter coach can can
take them to.

Speaker 4 (07:36):
Be I just don't think so. I think the coach
is too too valuable to the team, you know what
I mean. It's just I mean, you do have some
really good players that did pick up a couple of people,
you know, off season that's helped out quite a bit,
you know, And and I just I honestly just don't
know if they can overcome that. I think they can

definitely in the first round. I think it's gonna be
a fight big time in the second round. If they
do get past it, they're definitely out on the third.
I don't think them going, I don't see them going
and past that. So it's just it's sad because you know,
I get to watch a lot of those kinds of
games here in Colorado and watching Joker just do chiple

double after chiple double, it's like, holy cam Man, you
were something else. And and just his vision with his
passes and everything and just getting everybody involved and and
yes we do you know, he do have that core
and they could, with sheer talent, possibly go further. But
I just think that, you know, the head coaches, with

the championship head coach is just too much to lose
right before the playoffs. It's just this is dumb.

You don't fire Philo Jackson just before the playoffs. So sorry,
so especially so close to the playoffs.

Yeah. Yeah, it's like pat Riley Phil Jackson getting canned
right of the playoffs. That's never gonna happen.

Well here's another The Sun's sorry. I was gonna say,
even when the Suns had Dan Tony, you know, when
they were running up and down the court, like you know,
they're not going to fire him rup before.

The Well that's that's funny. You go for pat Riley
and Phil Jackson and then just throw d'antni in there,
like you know they call him and Tony because you know,
the play any defense. He doesn't require any defense. But
but but one more name to add to that list,
Greg Popovich, right when we know hell score hell scares

five championships in his twenty year tender tenure, which with
the Spurs. Yeah, yeah, this era of our error, this
era last twenty years or so for sure. But yeah,
they you're not going to fire him right before the playoffs.
Teams like the chemistry that the Spurs had and going
against your point, actually, Jonathan Teams like the Nuggets, who

I feel gets stronger in the playoffs, like Jamal Murray,
who's never been an All Star, he gets better. He's
like Jimmy Butler, I would say, of the West. But now,
of course Jimmy Butler plays with the with the Warriors now,
but his numbers go up tremendously in the playoffs, especially
when he's playing the Lakers. So but but brother, now,

I guess when you're hearing, you know, straight from the
horse's mouth and Colorado saying he doesn't think they're going
to get past the second round. That's got to bowl
well for you guys, right, you guys have momentum coming
in and the one two punch of of Luka Doncic
and lebron James, Austin Reeves averaging twenty six points a game,
I think in the last the last month or so,

something crazy, and they have and they have Brownie James,
who's apparently better than Michael Michael Jordan. But I I.

Didn't even say I couldn't even say it without least

The only reason I bring that up.

You know, you see some crazy things on Twitter, and
I scrolled through. I'm always looking for screenshots so I
can prepare for these big on sports talk show episodes.
And I see an excerpt that shows Bronnie James. Nice
photo up there. You know, he had his best game
ever as a Laker this past week. But it shows
three porters made in the season nine, Michael Jordan and

his rookie Season nine And I just threw my hands up,
and I'm thinking, let's take all basketball knowledge out of it, right,
the fact that they didn't shoot that many three pinners
back when? But where does it end? Right? And I'm
grateful for one Twitter user who came. The first comment
underneath that page was you know, some real statistics, It said,

Brownie James total points fifty seven, Michael Jordan total points
as a rookie twenty three hundred and thirteen. All right,
this time was getting envy difference.

Yeah, I was gonna say Ben swarming for multiple hours,
Jordan not so many. So there you go. That's all
you need to say.

Speaker 3 (12:07):
I just that's why contact matters, right, Yeah, this sport
and we know it's a different game. And take nothing
away from Bronnie James, who had difficult Look, his dad
is arguably one of the best ever. I think top two, okay,
and that's behind that Michael Jordan. Right, Bronnie James statistics

for this year two point two points a game, Oh lord,
zero point six assists, zero point six rebounds.

You better get your stuff together back and we making
him playoff.

Front, averaging five and a half minutes a game. So
I wanted to take that with what you will. I
think he definitely has the talent. We see it when
he goes and plays in the G League. I don't
think he's going to be that hero coming off the
bench for the Lakers, but hey, this is why we
hit record. If he comes it, hits a game over

the Nuggets in the Game six and knocks him out
of the playoffs, he'll be a hero forever.

Well, he'll do what his dad couldn't, right, Because yeah,
I'm in Las Vegas. I'm not putting any money on it.
I'm just saying, I mean, the kid's got some talent
and you know, and he's actually starting tonight. Lakers out
their season finale tonight against the Portland Trail Blazers, who
are poopy, and so I don't think that it's it's

you know, this is that time for a young player,
Dalton connect right, who has seen a lot of the
pine the bench this year after starting the season pretty well.
This is when you want your your bench, your young
guys to have that confidence coming in. And I don't know,
I think the playoffs and the NBA are all about debt.
And you look at a team and like the Nuggets,

they both have it.

Well you got to do then I'm a draft from
Ronnie because he was good or he's going to be
a dead X factor off the bend.

I don't know after he's a three D guy compared

say it, Like no, You're absolutely right though, and as
long as we're all, you know, honest about this situation.
But here's what I want to know, and brother, no,
I'll start with you tick the Lakers factors out of
I know you believe that they could make it to
the finals here, but what's your what's your finals match up? Here?

Before the playoffs get going? You can say Lakers if
you really truly believe that.

I mean, but I mean what I'm I'm gonna say,
Lakers in Boston.

Speaker 3 (14:54):
Class beating.

I want the eight game I mean finals championship tied
feeding being Boston.

That's right. It's what seventeen or eighteen right now? Right,
Celtics to leave with eighteen?

So you want Lakers shy and I'm biased. You know
I'm gonna say it, Okay.

Speaker 3 (15:12):
That's that's why I asked your honesty. It's all all
recorded here, okay, because if you went against your team,
people would be like, ah, he's not really with it.
He's not really with it. But you know, people don't
really listen to this podcast anyway, So that's all right, nobody.

But those teams above us, they're they're good and I
can't see they're going deep. Yeah, taking game together and
who true, Like you said, Joe kids, he's a he's
a monster. He is, but he's a monster.

But but but I mean, look, that's just funny because
the Lakers fan is saying he sees the Nuggets going
and the guy closest to the Nuggets saying, no, I
don't see anything. That's why I love sports. Okay, we're
all looking at the same numbers here, but we're interpreting
game and just with our own eyes cut into you, Jonathan,
what do you see two teams going to the finals?

I mean, I think if the if the Nuggets didn't
actually fire their coach or if they can actually get
over that, I would say the Nuggets from the West.
But you know, I just I actually think Houston might
might take it all the way. I like Houston. I
like they're young, they're you know, they got a little

bit of depth, you know. The East. I've always been
partial to the Bulls, but they're not going to go anywhere.
They're there, do dooo. So well they have a chance,
they are, they are, but they're they're just they're just
crap right now. So I I don't know. I think
I think Boston is pretty good. I'd be surprised, I

would actually be. I would like to see like New
York and Houston go, but I just don't think it's
gonna be that. Yeah, I think it's be Houston in Boston,
maybe even Cleveland, but I lean more towards Boston.

Speaker 3 (17:04):
Well, I'm glad somebody said Cleveland and something. I mean
not sixty four and seventeen seven and three over their
last ten games and the number one seed in the East.
Now that was with a surge in Boston right behind them,
who closed the gap in the last month or so.
But I honestly, I think the Calves have a great shot.
I would love to say, yeah, the Knicks and the Lakers,

that would be great. Look at the two three seeds,
the two largest cities in this country. The NBA Adam
Silver would love that. But the Knicks don't play good
teams well, so I think as soon as soon as
they run into the Celtics or Calves, possibly the Pacers,
who I think knocked them. Yeah, yeah, Pacers here with
the four seed. I don't think they have a chance.

But here's a team out of the West that I
would really love to see, you know how far they
go and make some noise. Is the La Clippers. The
other team across now, the ones that don't listen to this,
the Clippers nine and one in their last ten games.
You have James Harden thirty five and five with a

triple double by zubox like Kawhi Leonard looks like twenty
nineteen Kawhi Leonard. So do you this is this mic? On?
Is this mic on the Clippers? The Clippers, they got
ridd of Doctor Rivers, they got Tyron. But it's never
happened before. I get it, it's never happened before. But

that's the beautiful thing about sports. Okay, you got the
Nuggets falling apart at the seams. You got the Lakers
still dealing with chemistry issues. It's only a matter of
time before Luca breaks down, like as we know that

for the Bucks is, that same Doc Rivers I was
just bashing. I would love to see him knock some
dust off and do it. And and the Bucks. I'm
talking to middle sized franchises, like the history is on
the side in that. I would say, would love to
see the Clippers. I would love to see James Harden
get around and cap off and gentlemen, I take I wish.

I wish Russell Westbrook was still on that team, But
you know he might blow a layup at the rim
and cost him, so I'll just leave him right where

start with you, do you think that that's enough to
edge out Shay Gildris Alexander for the m v P.

Man, can you you know go against them? What he does?
He just makes the team better with just being being
in there is passing, his his awareness, he's scoring, he's rebounding,
his defense, defense.

Yeah, you mentioned that every other stat though, You're right,
every other stat You're absolutely right they are. I'm over shame,
all right. Bringing it over to you, Jonathan, what do you.

Think, Joker man? You gotta be kidding me. If you
take that dude out of Denver, he's not Denver is nothing.

What it is to me. With m vps, you know,
you you take the person completely out, or you swap
them with the other contender. You know, the other m
VP contender, How much better would they make that team?
And I just think you put Joker on any one
of the other teams that has an MVP contender, that
team is instantly better than the person that they just

switched with. I don't care who it is. I mean,
you're a big man averaging a triple double for the season.
That's amazing. That's just amazing to me. So there's no
way there's another person that's gonna beat Joker in my opinion.

Well, there is a way. And now I know NBA
and NFL are apples and oranges, but we saw that
similar where statistics weren't everything. Lamar Jackson at the edge
over Josh Allen and who walked away with the MVP
right now. Again, not to say that it's the same
type of criteria, because even here in twenty twenty five

and the three of us sitting on this podcast may
have different voting criteria for the MVP. I'm looking at
it for in terms for Shae Golders Alexander who averaged
thirty two and set a thirty two point seven points
a game, five rebounds, six assists, something like that, the
general for that team there, and of course he did
have an all star teammate, he does have one, where

the Joker doesn't have one. But I'm looking at the record,
I'm looking at the head to head and I'm gonna
say when it mattered in a regular season, this is
only a regular season award. Shaye Golch's Alexander. You call
him a free throw merchant, but you still have to
initiate the contact and he's still in the bucket. And
if you I was listening on his box sports radio

Beyond Couples, a podcast sports show I really like, and
one of the guests on there made a great point.
Have you ever seen Shae Gilgris Alexander sweat? You ever
seen him wipe his brow like he makes it look
so easy that it just it just comes natural. And
you know, brother, no, you know me. I like my
middle range assassins. I like guys that smaller guys in

frame stature who are not afraid to infiltrate the paint right. Yes,
easier than ever to score in the paint. But how
he does it right hand, left hand on the elbow,
get you turning around, it's it's it's a thing to see.
And I'm hoping. The thing about the difference between his
game and the Jokers game, to me is the Joker

is heavenly dependent on everybody else doing their job to
make him look good, to get those stats. And in
the playoffs when when the when the clock is winning
down and people get tight start clinching up, you know
what I mean. Michael Porter Junior, six', ten you would
think he would be more of a factor LIKE i
Think Aaron gordon. Is but we'll, see we will. See

ALL i JUST i have to know there's three of
us on this, podcast AND i think it really is
only a two person. RACE i don't think at the
number to come down.

Here but the only reason Why alexanders gets the edge
is because of what you said about the. Record you,
know they're they're a. Powerhouse you, know they're a, favorite
you know that kind of. Thing it's just, like you,
know those are usually ones they kind of get the
edge whenever these kinds of awards, are you, know awarded

out at the end of the. Year it's like who
has the, better better, team you know.

That kind of. Thing but, yeah, well, yeah there's an
eighteen game difference between the two in terms of the. Win,
callum if it was a maybe we'd be a little bit, closer,
RIGHT i, Mean joker had a stat that we have
never seen before in THE nba, history right Or stee
twenty and twenty something like. That, yeah so, yeah but
one game doesn't define an eighty two game, season.

RIGHT i also think there's just kind of maybe this
he's you, know they're tired of seeing the same name

though he's done better this year than he has in

the Four nations face off in the middle of. It

because these guys they come out there and they you,

finland And. Sweden, uh you, know because THE nhl has
made up with primarily those those types of players from

those countries and stuff like. That so you have some
top top players that usually face off against each other
and now they're teammates and and it is like you,
know other other sports where there's all stars and you
have the top, players but those games are usually just
kind of like you, know backyard fun type of, stuff you,
know whereas in hockey there was fights at the start

they don't care that this is this is an all star,
game if you want.

so just explain to the people that don't know what
a power play is and how that's initiated and why
that's an.

Advantage. Yeah, Yeah so usually it's it's something that you,
know one of the other teams do as an, illegal
like hooking or interference or something like. That so you,
know hockey does have their penalties just like other sports as.
Well usually if it's high sticking causing blood that they
they turned into like a major and that'll be like
a five minute. Penalty interesting thing is when that happens

is the team that gets, penalized they now have four
men on the ice and the other team has five
men on the, ice so that they have a power,
play and if the on a, minor if the team
that's on the power play scores the, goal that basically
ends the penalty for the minor. Penalty, however with a,
major it. Doesn't you can still get OR i think

(37:30):
it's four minutes actually instead BECAUSE i think in five
minutes for. Fighting but you, know you still get another
penalty power. Play so you can score two technically two
power plays in a, major because if you score it
in the first two, minutes you still get another two
minute power. Play and then if somebody gets another, penalty

(37:53):
you can do five on three and that's the that's
the biggest. Advantage they won't do like a five on
two or anything like, that will only stay up. Five, yeah,
yeah it would be too. Easy but also interesting is
if if that, person so let's say you have a
five on three and you, score, right one person comes
out of the penalty, box and now it's still a

(38:16):
power play because now you have a five on four
still for how much longer is for that other, person,
uh for to to you, know write out his. Penalty
and usually SOMETIMES i mean you'll you'll do other things
to get a man, Advantage like if you're losing by
one goal towards the end of the, game you'll see

the coach pulling the goalie so they'll have a six on. Five,
uh you, know because you're only allowed six people on
nice you, know five players and and then the goalie,
basically so you're you, know you can try to do
a six on five as well to create a mini
type of power play without an actual. Penalty. Uh and
that's been down this. YEAR i mean there's been a
lot less penalties than previous. Years. Uh some people have

had like articles explaining why or, whatever And i'm just,
LIKE i really don't. CARE i LIKE i like, watching you,
know just five on. FIVE i like. Watching and then
in the penalty as, well when when the shorthanded, team
if they actually screwed away and they score a, goal
they get a shorty or short handed, goal but they're

still on the power. Play they still have to. Defend
like their goal doesn't actually eliminate the power. Play it's
just awesome seeing your team score shorty, though because they're
they get the ice and break away and score a.

you got a team there's a rivalry going. On one
person you, know is high, sticking so they're out for five,

and so when you go to an actual game in
the stadium one the stadiums are a lot, smaller kind
of like basketball, stadiums like the The abs they play
