(00:06):
There's nothing to writing. All youdo is sit down at a typewriter and
bleed Welcome to the Bleeders, apodcast and support group about book writing and
publishing. I'm writer and podcaster CourtneyKosak, and each week I'll bring you

(00:27):
new conversations with authors, agents andpublishers about how to write and sell books.
So Bleeders Summer School is now insession, and I'm doing something a
little different. I'm trying to writea freaking book, and I've discovered that's
very hard to do well producing threepodcasts. So I had already batched a

(00:50):
bunch of interviews for you guys.I was very excited to release them,
and that's what I'm going to do. I did it all in advance.
It's all ready for you. So, long story short, this is how
it's going to go down. Iam going to serve you up a minisode
every Monday. Okay, let's callit a flash podcast in literary terms,
and it's going to offer a delicioussample or a key lesson from the full

(01:15):
conversation. It's gonna be shorter, okay, and then the full interview is
over on the newly launched YouTube channelfor the bleeders, which is really cute.
It's really fun to watch everybody,so I think you'll enjoy that.
And yes, I am going onforty and I am launching a YouTube channel.
There's no shame in my game. The handle on YouTube is at bleeders

(01:38):
podcast. You have to use theat sign. It's stupid, but it's
how it works. So again,YouTube dot com slash at bleeders podcast and
make sure you subscribe over there sothat you can stay up on the latest
and without further ado. Our instructorfor today is Hi. My name is

(01:59):
Antonia and I am the author ofSpent How did it wind up like this
book that I am holding in myhands today? You're so cute. I
did everything wrong, and I shouldsay that straight off the box. I
did everything wrong, So you know, at first I thought it was fiction,
and then I was like, no, this is non fiction. And

(02:21):
then I was like, maybe it'sa collection of essays. No, it's
a memoir. So but the usefulthing about that is what I learned is
that I think Richard Yates is right. Richards who wrote Revolutionary Road in the
Eastern Parade, he said that youonly have like two stories. You're gonna
tell your entire life. Yeah, and there's two stories you have in you
and you're going to tell those storiesfor the rest of your life. But
here's the good news. You're goingto massage that material and massages and massage

(02:44):
and massages and massages and massage thatall these different ways. So that's kind
of what I did, is likeI knew I was going to write about,
you know, getting sober probably, and of course it was going to
be about the thrust of sex work, and like it was really important to
me to shed light on sex workin a way that was not overly congratulatory
or overly romantic and not overly youknow, trauma porn. Yes, So

(03:07):
I wanted to really like find that, you know, I think where I'm
always searching for that line. Ithought you walked that line like so well,
and like I said, I havea little bit of a lust for
sex work too, So I waslike, exactly exactly, Antoniette. Yeah,

(03:27):
I had never read about sex workin a way that felt like it
was being framed as an addiction.Yes, but I think I think I
think it is, like I thinkthat it's more like gambling, where you
go in and you you hope, and you hustle and you try, and
that's a that's a gambling. Youhit big or you hit small, but

(03:50):
you hit something. And I managedto sort of I managed to hammer that
into like this release stable career almosttwenty nine years, and I made like
a certain amount of money every timeI went in, and I never left
without that certain amount of money, you know, And I just I just
did that. I just like Ijust like made it fit into my life

(04:12):
and I just made it. Imade it support me. You know.
I was just like, these motherfuckersare going to fucking support me. You
became a hustler. But can Itell you so as I was reading it,
as I just finished it, andthen I got a huge spike in
my only fans and that I couldn'tI couldn't have predicted or you know,

(04:32):
like I sort of knew like Imight get some extra traffic from this,
but I got a lot of extraand it made me feel like I was
like, I bet that's what shefelt like, going in and having like
an over a thousand dollars night. And then you're like, oh, Okay,
I'm fucking empowered to like make mynext move. Yeah, and then

(04:53):
it's like, Okay, now I'mgoing to have a two thousand dollar night.
Yes, I could get why howit's addictive? I know to have
a seventeen hundred dollar night before sevenpm? Oh shit, which as I
got older, that became a morefun goal to like, how can I
get out of here before nine, you know, and go home. I'm
just gonna be up till four inthe morning. It's like, oh,

(05:16):
all right, Bleeders. That wasjust a little preview. The whole interview
is so good and it's over onYouTube. So again, you go to
YouTube dot com slash at Bleeders podcast. That is YouTube dot com slash at
Bleeders podcast for the full conversation. You're gonna love it. Thank you for

(05:42):

(06:03):

and if you could do me ahuge solid and leave a five star rating
and review, I have a goalfor the summer to get to fifty ratings
on both Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and as of this recording, I am
at seven and twenty respectively, andyou can totally help me out by leaving

(06:27):
a five star rating and a reviewif it's possible. On Spotify, you
just go to the upper left handcorner of the Bleeders page, you click
the star button and you click allfive stars, and it really helps elevate
the level of guests that we canget. So I'm hoping in the fall
