ladies and gentlemen, thank you for tuning in to the
Boxing Rush our show fights atw dot com. My guest
today is a super middleweight twenty nine years old, rank
number nine in the WBA twenty one oh one thirteen
KOs out of Brooklyn, New York. His name is Junior
Junior O owning. What's going on?
Speaker 3 (01:58):
What's going on? Man? How are you good?
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Man?
Speaker 3 (02:00):
How you doing doing well? Doing well?
Speaker 4 (02:03):
All right?
Speaker 2 (02:03):
You gotta fight coming up on with Star Boxing. Uh
hearing about another week or so on March twenty second.
Before we get into that, talk to me a little
bit about, you know, for those that aren't familiar with
New York and its surroundings, like a little bit about
growing up in New York and and getting into the
(02:24):
into the boxing mix, which led to run ins with
guys like paulimonon Analogie Zapp duw to Danny Jacobs, Saddama League,
et cetera.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
Yeah, I feel like I grew up in a you know,
crazy error in boxing in New York. You know, my
dad trained Paulie for the Wands Fights and American and
you know a couple other ones, And you know, I
grew up in the gym with you know, Saddam and
Danny and Curtis Stevens and you know, a whole bunch
of you know guys that you know made fireworks in
(02:56):
New York. So I feel I like to think I'm
part of a group.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Yeah, yeah, no doubt. And and up until twenty twenty four,
you weren't too too active what was going on with
your boxing career or life in general up until that
point that you weren't as active as maybe you may
have wanted to be.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
So, uh, you know, I was in a I was
in a bad contract with the Rock Nation.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
You know, they closed its doors.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
And then you know, they didn't give me a release,
so I was stuck in that contract for two years.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
After they shut.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
Down, I didn't get the fight, and then COVID happened,
so it was another year and I ended up fighting
on Triller on the Jake Paul been askar and fight
uh Carden. Uh won that and then I don't know,
for whatever reason, I didn't you know, get another fight
until that next year.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
You know.
Speaker 4 (03:53):
Then I fought on uh Danny Garcia versus Jose Benavidez,
you know, got a first round knockout on that card
against you know, a good guy, and uh, you know,
I thought it was gonna start flowing again after that
and then and it didn't.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
So you know, I just you know, I sat on
the shelf a little bit after that. And it was a.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
Weird time because I didn't, you know, I was doing
what I had to do, but I didn't really understand why,
you know, I wasn't you know, being called you know,
and uh, yeah, it was.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
A weird time.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
So I ended up uh seeing my manager Roberto Diaz
at the uh at the Garden, well he.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
Wasn't my manager yet.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
I saw him at the Garden and at the quickly
in Berlina fight, and uh, I was like, man, uh
he's known me since I was young, and I was like, man, I,
I you know, I need to get some fights. He
was like, you know what I'm gonna. You know, I'm
gonna I'm gonna be in touch, don't worry about it.
I'm I'm gonna be in touch, and uh, you know
I I you know, I was like, okay, cool.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
You know. I didn't hear from him for a while,
and uh, I was like, all right, I'm gonna just
go get ready.
Speaker 4 (05:02):
I'm gonna come out here to Colorado and go get
ready and then you know, uh h if a fight comes,
you know, I'll be prepared.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
And he just called me a random day while I
was out here, and uh.
Speaker 4 (05:17):
He was like, you know, I'm gonna get you a
fight in uh in king Kun. I was like, He's like,
He's like, we're gonna get you busy. I said, okay, cool,
fucking king Kun. You know, and then the deal popped
up with Joe and the rest is history. You know,
I've been these past two fights, you know, doing doing
my thing.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
That Now for those that that may not like really
understand the economics behind it. During that time that you
weren't fighting, you know, you still had to you know,
maintain a household, whether that's for yourself or family and
stuff like that. So like how did you get by,
uh during those times when you weren't fighting.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
Oh man, my family?
Speaker 4 (06:00):
You know my dad, you know, you know, my biggest
support system, and you know it was it wasn't easy.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
You know, it wasn't easy.
Speaker 4 (06:08):
It was it was just a confusing time for me,
you know, you know, thankfully, you know, I'm not you know,
I'm not too bad with you know, with the financial
part of things.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
So, uh, you know, I was able to sustain, but
you know it was rough.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
It's right, okay, all right? And then so you linked
up with Joe dea Guardia Star Boxing May four? Is
what it looks like? What made you go into that
direction with star and and and how has that you
know been for you given that you're coming from a
(06:47):
really bad situation.
Speaker 4 (06:49):
Well, I first I put into consideration that you know,
I would be busy again. You know a lot of times,
a lot of these big promoters, you know, they they
don't you don't see you don't see your your really
good guys. You don't fight too often, you know what
I mean, just because of you know, dates and TV
and all that stuff. So I just knew that I
(07:12):
would be active again. And uh, and that was you know,
what was most important to me. And uh, you know,
fighting back in New York, you know, that's you know,
it was. It was always a big thing for me.
I don't think I have ever you know, gone to
distance in New York. You know, it's always something about
(07:32):
fighting at home for me. And uh uh yeah, you know.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
That was that was Those were those were my two
you know, main reasons.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
And and you know Joe Joe's me you know, champions,
Jose champions you know from New York and Joe Smith
you know, Chris I, Jerry and many others.
Speaker 2 (07:52):
Yeah, that's what's up, all right. Listen, your your father
trains you. There's there's always that the conversation about the
father son relationship when it comes to trainer and fighter. Right,
how how is your situation with your father being the trainer,
(08:14):
fighter and father son situation? How is that for you guys?
Because with everyone is different, you see all different versions
of that, the good, the bad, the ugly, right, and
so how is it a little bit with you guys?
And and are you able to to to have that
(08:34):
definitive break between the gym and being you know, the
family father son.
Speaker 4 (08:41):
When I was younger, it was it was harder, you
know for us, you know, to leave the gym and
then you know, separate the two.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
It was, Yeah, it was.
Speaker 4 (08:49):
It was difficult when I was younger, you know, because
you know I wouldn't always listen. You know, I was
you know, hard headed, and you know I wasn't always
living the you know, the perfect life you know that
I wanted.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
You know, Now as as I got older.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
I focused up. You know, I've focused on more. My
my attention is fully on the sport now. And you know,
we have a good relationship. You know, it's just you know,
even even if we do argue in the generally, you
know how to you know, we leave and you know
an hour later, you know it'll be sending me reels
on Instagram, you know what I mean. So you know,
(09:25):
it's just, you know, it's we both we both know
that the work is putting in. You know, it's just
you know, sometimes we buy heads. But the dynamic, you know,
that's what's up.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
That's what's all right. And you know, you you have
your your in training camp in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Just
kind of curious on on what has taken you out
to Colorado to get prepared for fights.
Speaker 4 (09:52):
Well, the first time I came out here was with
Marcus Brown when he got ready for Bobby Jack. And
you you know, I just I saw the blueprint and
I knew that, you know, it was the right thing
to do. When you're getting to this point, you know,
you got to sacrifice and be away. You know, as
(10:14):
much as people think, you know, they could train at
home and you know, stay focused and ship, but it's
you got to sacrifice, man, it's not It's not about
staying in your conference zone.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
And you know, I have a.
Speaker 4 (10:25):
Really good team out here, my strength and conditioning coach,
you know, General Lee Hm, my PT MAC. I just
got a great you know system out here and it's
been working.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
You know.
Speaker 4 (10:39):
The altitude is you know, crazy, so you know, I
come down in great shape and uh, you know, I
just I'm excited.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
Man. A lot of work has been put in this
past year and a half.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
Yeah, the a is real. I remember going to Colorado
for the first time and I stepped out of the
airport and I walked for like twenty feet and I
was out of breath. It's real.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
Springs.
Speaker 4 (11:02):
The Springs is the Springs is a special place, you know,
the Olympic you know, Olympic City, Olympic Center out here,
you know, and then we go up to Pike's peak, which
is even crazier, you know, eleven thousand feet.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
So wow, yeah, we'll be working.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
Out here man, March twenty second, you're going to be
fighting Able Mina Star Boxing Rock and Fight fifty event.
One of the notable names on his on his record
is split decision loss to Damian Sosa in twenty twenty one.
Well what do you know about him coming into this
(11:38):
this fight and then what are you kind of expecting
without giving away too.
Speaker 4 (11:42):
Much, Well, he has ah, he has a drug in
Shremeta and uh that was in Poland, so we both
know what that means. So I can't sleep on this guy.
You know, if if I let him, you know, come
in there and stink up the place, he's going to
do so, so I have to go in there and execute.
Speaker 3 (12:05):
He's uh, he's he's not a slouch man.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
This is a real fight, you know, and uh, it's
it's kind of great, you know that we get to
do it on Rock and Fights fifty, you know, which
is which is pretty dope, and uh, you know it's
kind of it's kind of crazy, you know how this
all you know panned up is this wasn't this wasn't
my car. This was Joel Smith's cart, you know, and
he got sick, and you know I was obviously, you know,
(12:30):
I was in camp and you know this is this
is just a case of me, you know, staying ready
at this point in my career.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
So I'm excited. I'm excited, you know this.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
You know, he I think he has, you know, good
enough records to where, you know, it bumps me up
a few spots maybe in the rankings, and we'll see
where we go from.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
There, all right, And then what message you want to
send out to the fans who are going to be
there in attendance or we're gonna be watching it. I
think Start they have the streaming on their website going on.
They have like Star TV.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Boxing Start Boxing TV.
Speaker 4 (13:10):
Oh, for the people that's gonna be there and enjoy
the night, man, it's gonna be it's gonna be fireworks.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
It's definitely.
Speaker 4 (13:16):
You know, I'm going there and put on the show
like I like I've been doing and uh, don't blink. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
And lastly, you know, you've called out plenty of fighters
here in the last few months. It seems like you
really want that m billy fight a Christian Mbilly fight,
but a Berlanga fight in New York, Now that that
sounds really good. And then you know you also have
Kayla Plant, who uh you know, Kayla Plant has always said,
(13:47):
you know, on social media, he's not a hard guy
to find. All you have to do is send the contract.
Will you get one of these guys in twenty twenty five?
Speaker 3 (13:59):
Listen, whoever, whoever will take the fight, we could do it.
Speaker 4 (14:06):
Like Tank said, ain't no safety on his block, at
no safety on his blog.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
I'm ready for whatever. Man.
Speaker 4 (14:14):
You know, you know, if I'll go to Canada taking Billy,
you know, you know, I'll go wherever to fight Kayler.
If Edgar wants to do it, we could do it
in the garden. You know, I'm here, bro. It's you know,
everybody gets their opportunity. And you know, you know me
and Edgar, you know we're good friends, you know, but
at the end of the day, he got his opportunity.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
I think it's my time.
Speaker 4 (14:37):
You know, everybody's you know, everybody's here making money, you know,
you know, buying diamonds, doing all these things.
Speaker 3 (14:47):
I think it's my turn.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
Yeah, no doubt, no doubt. Well, listen, Jr. I appreciate
your time. I want to wish you the best of
luck on your fight on the twenty second, and we'll
talk soon.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
Yes, sir, thank you, Okay.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (15:03):
It's the Box of Us out of Sea.
