All Right, some more NFL news and notes as we
are right around the corner from NFL training camps, to
also get into some local college football both by U
and Utah, and our takeaways from Big twelve Media Days
SEC Media Days currently underway. We'll get you the latest
and the updates on all of that from Atlanta, Georgia
as they start today and go through Wednesday. Three days
(00:39):
full of or it might be four days full of
SEC media Days. That's pretty crazy. And we had two
days of Big twelve Media Days. I think we're going
three or four days of SEC Media Days this year.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Yeah, and by day two we were like, all right,
we're what else?
Speaker 4 (00:54):
Not much enough to talk about here?
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Four jeezday.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
Yeah, we'll keep you We'll keep you up today with
all the news. I'm sure there will be quite a few.
And I think Sankie's going to take the podium at
some point this morning.
Speaker 4 (01:07):
He already did, did he already? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:09):
He said that he's run like forty one marathons.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
That's incredible.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
It was the one headline I saw.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Well, if there's anything notable from that, maybe we'll get
that to you coming up here later on in the
second hour, maybe hour number three, towards the end of that,
and we'll try and pull that and get you any
memorable quotes from mister sank from SEC Media Days this
morning in Atlanta, Georgia. Because it's always fun to listen.
The one thing I take away from Media Days, Jordan,
(01:35):
it's always so much fun to listen to these conference
commissioners essentially fight one another when they step up to
the podium. Because you saw Brett or Mark last week
step up there and say, we're the deepest conference in America.
Speaker 4 (01:48):
We have the most parody, which makes us the best conference.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Okay, and now you know that Sankie's going to come
back and he's going to clap back. It's like when
the Pac twelve and the Big twelve. We're going back
and forth when they were lobbing grenades quote unquote lobbing
grenades at each other and khlof Kov said something and
then your Mark would say they're open for business, and
then Khliofkov would hit him back. With the only business
(02:13):
that's happening is if a PAC twelve, if the PAC
twelve takes schools away from the Big twelve. Just the
back and forth between these these conference commissioners is, uh,
it's actually fun because it's so petty.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
Yeah, I mean, I don't know I saying you're gonna
say something because I haven't seen anything yet. Is the
Big twelve enough on their radar that they care?
Speaker 2 (02:34):
You think they're at that point They're like, it's not
even worth us saying anything back to them.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
That's what I mean, like, because you know what it's
these commissioners get up there. It's like a pr ted
talk like there's nothing of substance. There's very little. So
I don't know what he's gonna really, I mean, I wish,
I hope he does gives us something.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
But I know there was something from Tony Pettiti last
year where he had responded to something that brett Or
Markets said, the commissioner of the Big ten, the commissioner
of the Big twelve. So yeah, we'll see, we'll see
what We'll dig through that. This morning, we'll get you
the latest from SEC media days out in Atlanta, Georgia.
Back to the NFL conversation we were having though, Jordan,
(03:14):
if you haven't if you haven't heard this, this was
a Kansas City sports talk radio show host. And I'm
not sure which station it was. It'd be funny if
it was the home of the Kansas City Chiefs. I'm
sure it was. But he goes off on Patrick Mahomes
because Patrick Mahomes recently was seen in a social media
(03:36):
picture with his shirt off at some sort of event.
Speaker 4 (03:40):
Maybe he's swimming with his wife.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
I don't know what it was, but he posted a
picture of him with the shirt off with his wife.
Maybe his wife posted it. This was the response from
the sports dooc radio show host, body shaming mister Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
Just like a week ago.
Speaker 5 (03:57):
Meanwhile, vacation photos are popping up with Patrick and he's fat.
I'm gonna say it, and I'm gonna tell you the truth.
That's why you hit the play button. He's an embarrassment.
You're a five hundred million dollar quarterback. You've made all
these comments in the off season that we're going to
do our talking on the field. We got our butts
kicked in the Super Bowl. We're coming back with a vengeance. Dude,
(04:17):
you're fat. Your belly would be fat at my pool
hanging out with us sixty year olds.
Speaker 4 (04:22):
Okay, my skin's flabby on yours. I get it.
Speaker 5 (04:26):
Stop stop the fast food. Do a sit up, do something. Yeah,
I'm sure he's worked out and strengthened his arm, and
he's done all kinds of different things, quarterback things. But
there's no training to this man. I don't understand it.
He's not a kid anymore. You can't just run through
your NFL career eating taco bell all the time and
(04:47):
door dashing fried chicken, which he loves from that one
place over in Leewood where he gets it all the time.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
It's time, dude.
Speaker 5 (04:56):
Meanwhile, vacation photos are popping up with Patrick Mahomes and
he's fat.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
That right there is the sports radio show host in
Kansas City talking about Patrick mahomes situation.
Speaker 4 (05:10):
Told him to do a sit up, do a sit
up or two?
Speaker 3 (05:13):
Huh Yeah, he got a six pack. They would have
won the Super Bowl.
Speaker 4 (05:17):
He said that he'd be he'd be considered fat at
his pool parties with a bunch of sixty year olds around.
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
I'm looking at the picture of Patrick Mahomes he's not fat. No,
he's not by any stretch of the imagination.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
No, he just doesn't have like a six pack.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Yeah, which does it really matter. I mean, the dude's
been the best quarterback in the NFL for the last
five to eight years.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
Yeah, but they've been Kelsey's been dragging his fat ass
up and down the field than those years. This guy
can't even you can't even understand the snap count because
he's got a true.
Speaker 4 (05:50):
Hey, I've got an idea. Get him some wide receivers. Huh.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
The dude that literally has no wide receivers. Every single
year he turns turns dudes into household names who go
and get paid some else.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
But this is what's so stupid about this is whether
you have a six pack or not. I'm gonna go
out on the limb does not affect how you play quarterback.
If you're actually obese, then yeah I would.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
But I mean, but Ben Roethlisberger was a large man. Yeah,
and he played the quarterback position just fine in my opinion.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
Yeah, that's what I mean. It's it's fine. Also, he's
played well, it's not like he's been playing bad. Yeah,
it's just it's so stupid it's just it's yeah, it's
beyond dumb.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
I don't think I would place the loss on Patrick
mahomes shoulder, would you? In the Super Bowl?
Speaker 3 (06:36):
No, but he didn't play, he didn't play well. But
but but I wouldn't say it was all his fault.
But it has nothing to do with whether he's you know,
looks like Captain America.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
Yeah, it's just.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
You go back and you look at the you know,
like great quarterbacks, they weren't like fit, great physical specimens.
You know, they were in shape. Patrick Mahomes is in shape.
You know how, you know, because he can run around
for an entire NFL game. He's fine.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
He's well conditioned. You have to be to be an
NFL athlete.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
Yeah. And also, this is your body. The way it
looks does not mean does not translate to necessarily to like, oh,
you're healthy and in good, great shape to play for
you know what I mean? Like it may it doesn't matter,
it's stupid.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Look, it's fine if Patrick Mahomes enjoys a what a
burger or two every once in a while, you know
what I'm saying, Because that dude franchised a couple brought
him to Kansas he did. Yeah, he owns a couple
of Kansas Kansas What A Burgers in the Kansas City
area and beyond there too.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
Good business.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
So if he wants to pass by his own franchise
and get a get a What a Burger or two,
what's what's it to you?
Speaker 4 (07:51):
You know?
Speaker 2 (07:52):
I enjoy that I got some when I was in Texas.
Speaker 4 (07:55):
Are you a fan?
Speaker 3 (07:56):
I've been once and I was like, yeah, it's fine.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
Oh, it's fine. You know what I was told. I
was told that in and out is better than what
a Burger. That's a disgrace. Really, yeah, that's a disgrace
right there.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
So when I went to What a Burger, then it
was I've got a bad one because it was it
was not memorable.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
Yeah, you're gonna have to go back and try it again.
You didn't go with us when we were in Mason,
Me and Ryan went, and you did not go with us.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
Where.
Speaker 4 (08:20):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
I think you're sleeping or something. He's on Championship Saturday.
If I'm not mistaken, I don't know where I was.
Maybe a better burger. You know what, you might have
been calling the other games I was working, Yeah, you
might have been working at that point.
Speaker 4 (08:37):
I won't throw you under the bus like that.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
No, it's just fine, Like I should go back. I
just don't remember. I was like, I remember I got
off the plane. I was like, I gotta try this,
and I was like, yeah, okay, I'm gonna.
Speaker 4 (08:48):
Reach out to I love what a Burger. I need
to reach out.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
Yeah, you do.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
I need to reach out to her for and Boise
Bob you lived in Texas for a while, he'll have
a what a Burger take on this. Yeah, Len Dawson
was smoking cigarettes at halftime when he was the quarterback
played pretty well. I get where you're like, if a
guy's out of shape, not playing well and this is
(09:11):
your I mean, this is beyond reaching. Who are some
other quarterbacks that you were like, not in great shape,
didn't look like a body builder or probably a lot.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
Of them, probably a lot of the older quarterbacks you
know back in the day, just weren't.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
I mean Tom Brady.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Tom Brady didn't like he was in good shape.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
But you go back and look at his combine picture. Yeah,
that's one of the greatest combine pictures ever. They never,
you know, waste a moment to be able to show that.
But even Tom Brady. Yeah, he's he's conditioned, he's good,
but never like until later on in his career.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
Yeah, when he got older, he got into incredible shape.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
Yeah. Yeah, and he's the greatest quarterback to play the game.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
And same with like Joe Montana, Like he was in
good shape. He didn't look like a swimsuit model.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
You know, he's not standing outside of Hollister anytime soon.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
They still have those? Are those still in business? I
think so those are? They were dark? I remember going
in there in high school.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Know why why were they so dark? They're trying to
I'm trying to shop in here. First of all, it
smells like a Miami nightclub. Second of all, I can't
see anything that I'm looking for because it's so dark.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
They spray axe body spray on everything on the hour,
every hour. Like but yeah, but that's the point is
like you don't have to just because you look like
a model doesn't mean you're first of all healthy, second
of all a good football player. It doesn't. It doesn't
trans It doesn't necessarily translate. Yeah, and it doesn't matter.
And it's so funny, like I know, this isn't even
(10:44):
it's just this idiot in Kansas City. Also, I like,
how what kind of pool parties are you having, bro
where you're.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
Like a bunch got a bunch of sixty year olds
at the pool party. Yeah, like, okay, man, what does
it say his name on that?
Speaker 3 (11:02):
I didn't say his name right there? I gotta find it.
Speaker 4 (11:04):
Yeah, try and find his name. We'll get into that.
I'm curious because.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
Who those top quarterbacks. Josh Allen doesn't have a six pack.
I guarantee you.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
That's why he's so worried about going and watching Sinners
his new wife in that movie.
Speaker 3 (11:25):
That's right, that's true. Hailey Steinfeld with Michael B. Jordan,
I'd be worried too. I'd be worried to because guess what,
Michael B. Jordan does have a six Yeah. Yeah, but
I bet you can't throw a football. You can't read
a defense.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
If that's what you know really matters to you in
a partner.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
That's what she was. That's what he's telling her. He
can't read a defense. You think he knows what a
blitz is coming, That's right. She's like, well, he's not
going to protect your blind side. Eight twenty one.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
This morning, we'll shift from the NFL let's go over
to college football. I got a couple of things on
Big twelve media day, and of course SEC media days
as they get underway. Excited to hear what Greg zank
you had to say. We'll probably play a clip or
two of that for you at some point here this morning.
On what the SEC currently is looking like. I'm more
curious here is playoff situation. In his comments on all
(12:23):
playoff situations in the future of a sixteen team playoff
and what the SEC is looking like in the previous
couple weeks, they said five plus eleven was their way,
and I think the Big Ten was the one that
did not want to go with the five plus eleven bottle.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
If I'm not mistaken, you want to hear Greg Zanky
clip from today. Absolutely, there is joy embedded in what
we do, and we take pride and what was accomplished
last year, our first.
Speaker 4 (12:48):
As a sixteen member.
Speaker 5 (12:50):
What I think is a super conference for all of
those you like to speculate about super conferences, welcome to one.
Speaker 4 (12:57):
Okay, all right, go to hell.
Speaker 2 (12:58):
Well, you didn't win a national champion and it's been
actually what three or four years? When did Georgia win?
That one was it three years ago. Yeah, the Big
ten is won a lot of national championships in a row.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
Here, just insufferable, insufferable like the rest of that conference.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
Super conference, sixteen teams, So it's the Big So the
Big twelves a super conference too by that measure.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
No, that's not the that's not what he's talking about.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
Well that's what he said. Sixteen teams, super conference. If
that equals a super conference, Big twelves a super conference.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
Yeah, No, it's because all of them could win a
national championship Arkansas.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
I would love to see the day when Vanderbilt wins
the national champions.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
Auburn could do it, Kentucky could do it, Mississippi State
could win one. Uh, keep going. South Carolina could win
a national cheam.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
Actually, you know what, South Carolina is going to be
pretty good this year. I was going to say, got
a good, good kid behind center. Texas A and M.
They always live up to expectations. Welcome to the super
Conference Oklahoma, man, who tell you what? They've been playing
good ever since they went into the SEC too.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
Yeah, good stuff from Greg Sank. Like just listen, I'm
gonna I'll put this out there. I get the South
doesn't have a lot. Okay, they have great food and
a lot of poverty and they have one metropolis, which
is Atlanta.
Speaker 4 (14:30):
That's it.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
You have college football, we'll give it to you. It's
like Canada and hockey, except Canada has a lot more
than the southern United States hasn't.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
And it's been a long time since they won the Cup.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
Yeah it is. Yeah, So like that's why when Canada
plays hockey, I'm like, all right, elchair for Canada, this
means a lot to them. College football like fine, Alabama,
you can have college football Mississippi because you know what else,
you have a lot of illiteracy and a lot of problems.
And it's not your fault. It's not all your fault.
Speaker 2 (15:02):
But that's what you refer to when you're watching college football.
That's what you're thinking about.
Speaker 3 (15:06):
Yeah, when Greg Sankie says that, I'm like, Okay, Greg, fine,
you want to give Mississippi and Alabama and Florida college football.
That's fine because I don't want to live there, and
I want to I want to visit there. It's really
there are some beautiful spots down there, but they got
a lot of other issues, and so I kind of
feel bad for him. Sometimes there are places I would
(15:27):
love to live down there. Charleston, Savannah is beautiful, but
as Oxford, Mississippi one of them, probably not, not necessarily
it is a Tuscaloosa, probably not. Is Athens. Yeah, I
could probably live in Athens. Is Oklahoma, anywhere in Oklahoma
one of them? Great nice people, But no, I like
(15:50):
where I'm at.
Speaker 4 (15:51):
Here you go.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
Here's another quote from Greg Sankie on the college football playoff.
He said, quote doubling down was one of the phrases
used by a Brett your marka the big twelve. That's
part of the gambling experience. You want to have a
good hand to play. We the SEC have the best
hand to play. Will continue to debate whether expansion above
(16:15):
twelve is appropriate.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
Wait, what, he's a gambling man, Craig Zankye said that that's.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
What he That's according to Brett McMurphy, who is live
in Atlanta. All right, we'll have to get his full
remarks on that, but he's talking about gambling and having
the best hand, and they're going to continue to talk
whether or not expansion above twelve is quote appropriate.
Speaker 3 (16:39):
Okay, what here's the thing is like, No, one. No
one is seriously I mean, your Mark can say what
he wants, but no one's seriously saying that there's a
better conference than the SEC. And when I say that,
(16:59):
I mean like top to bottom talented, good teams. There's
not a better conference than the SEC. We know that,
And if you don't, I don't know how you disagree
with that. You watch those games. What we're disagreeing with
is that all your teams should get into the College
Football Playoff. That's what we're saying.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
Or even you know March Madness where fourteen of sixteen
teams made it.
Speaker 3 (17:23):
That's what I'm saying. And Greig Sinki would disagree with
you on that. He would want like eight or nine
teams in. And again we talk about this during March Madness.
Is join a lesser like you took the money. You
have all the money as a school in the SEC.
Part of that deal is you're going to play a
really difficult schedule and you may not get into the playoff.
(17:47):
And if you were in the Big twelve, you'd have
a lot less money, but you might get into the playoff.
That's the deal you made. That's the deal I think
you should have made. So I have, like you know,
have zero sympathy for the school.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
Greg Sankie also said that he spoke with the Big
Tens Tony Petiti four out of five days last week, saying, quote,
we have a different view of the college football playoff.
We have a twelve team playoff that can stay in
twenty twenty six if we don't agree on a new format.
So if they can't come to a decision coming up
(18:22):
in December and there's a deadline but by December, that
they would have to come to a decision on expansion
in the playoff format for next year. If they don't
come to that decision, they could just carry the twelve
team current playoff format into next year with the same
seating situation, just going one through twelve in the college
(18:43):
football Playoff rankings.
Speaker 3 (18:45):
I'm fine with that. I don't think they should expand
be on twelve anyway.
Speaker 4 (18:47):
You think twelve is good enough?
Speaker 3 (18:48):
Yeah, I don't need to see teams thirteen through sixteen.
They're not that good. It's not basketball, it's not you're
not going to get those same up sets. That's why
I'm not as upset when like Utah doesn't play SUU,
because su is not going to win that game, and
they're not. Most for the vast majority of the times,
(19:09):
they're not going to be that competitive. Number sixteen wasn't
going to beat Texas last year. They just weren't until
they do, which is like once in every thirty years
it'll happen.
Speaker 2 (19:22):
But according to mister Sankee, Kentucky, who's the fourteenth best
team in the SEC, could take down Alabama exactly. But
I mean we saw Vanderbilt beat Alabama last year.
Speaker 3 (19:33):
Yeah, by which I mean, look is I don't know,
you know, I don't know how those bottom of the
set SEC stand teams line up with the bottom of
like the Big twelve or the Big ten. But but
I also would submit that Alabama wasn't that good last
year and that's why they got beat by Vanderbilt. Very well.
(19:54):
Do you want to you want to know how many
times the Vanderbilt beat Alabama while Nick Saban was the coach.
Speaker 4 (20:00):
A guess I'm gonna go with zero zero.
Speaker 3 (20:02):
It was zero times, so the good and you know,
Vanderbilt's not beating Georgia, they're not beating Texas. Yeah, so
this is not it's just not it's not basketball. So
I just don't by the way, another one, another quote
from Greg Sankey here, Yeah, quote, college athletics is not broken. Okay, Greg,
(20:23):
I don't know what broken would look like. You look
like to you, then this guy's a jackass.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
It's not it's not broken when you're pulling in sixty
five million dollars per school every year.
Speaker 4 (20:36):
Yeah, not broken for you. I guess, yeah, it's broken
for you.
Speaker 3 (20:39):
Yeah, and I guess it's not broken depending on what
your vision of college athletics is. Like, that's amazing thinking
the gut, like just the you know what to say that,
that's unbelievable. We got eight we have Stanford and Calor
in the ACC. Oh yeah, this is absolutely it's right
(21:00):
on track. It's exactly what college athletics it is supposed
to be.
Speaker 4 (21:04):
This is the way it's supposed to look. Yeah, since
the beginning.
Speaker 3 (21:06):
Of time, one of the most storied conferences in the
history of college athletics just went down the tubes. Yeah,
nothing's broken, there's no problems. It's we have a dude
who like we have we're talking about a court last
year's starting quarterback for BYU who's transferring to another school,
(21:27):
not using the transfer portal.
Speaker 4 (21:29):
Now nothing's broken and will still be available to play.
Speaker 3 (21:34):
And not by some like avenue where we're all like,
oh yeah, okay, I forgot about that. That that's part
of the system. That's a rule that makes sense. No,
we have no idea what we're like, what he's doing.
How is he transferring?
Speaker 2 (21:46):
He's just gonna leave classes, unenroll at BYU, and enroll
in a different school. I didn't know you could do
that and still be eligible to play the next year.
Speaker 3 (21:58):
Exactly, nothing's broken.
Speaker 4 (21:59):
Why didn't I think that?
Speaker 2 (22:00):
If I'm another player that got stuck somewhere because I
was told the transfer portal was closed, I'd be sitting
there going, oh, why didn't I think of that? I
should have just unenrolled from classes and enrolled somewhere else.
Speaker 4 (22:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (22:11):
The goal to actually put out there that college athletics
is not broken. That's all it is is broken? Are
you kidding me? We got we It's just amazing, amazing
the arrogance also put this out.
Speaker 2 (22:31):
Greg Sankie said, I don't think there's anyone looking to
swap their conference schedules with the SECS, whether it's eight
or nine conference games. The whole debate whether or not
the SEC should be playing eight or nine conference games
is still a very much of a hot topic around
college football, especially with the Big Ten saying, well, we're
not going to play nine games at the SEC is
(22:51):
not going to play nine games in conference.
Speaker 4 (22:54):
Yeah, go schedule three cupcake FCS teams like you.
Speaker 3 (22:58):
I don't. Yeah, you're right, you have a deep, good conference.
They're good teams. But you're also that's why they paid
you a lot of money. So look, they want their
cake and they want to eat it too. They want
the money and they want they want, even if they're
mediocre teams with mediocre records, to be rewarded at the
(23:23):
end of the year, just like basketball. Yeah, and like
why would I Why is that good for college football?
Speaker 4 (23:33):
All right?
Speaker 2 (23:33):

This Salt Lake tournament coming up on Thursday. We'll give

(26:08):
as well. Bryce Larkson alongside Jordan ba Ucci getting some
text messages in this morning. We've been talking about the
SEC is. SEC Media Days are underway from Atlanta, Georgia
here this morning and they'll go on for the next
three or four days, so you're gonna get a lot
from the SEC as we gear up for college football.
(26:28):
Just got done talking about Greg Sankee's comments, his commentary
on Brett Yormark's comments and the college Football Playoff, different
things like that, and we were talking about just how
crazy and broken college football is despite how much Greg
Sankee wants to say it's not broken. So we got
a text message on that at eight seven seven three
(26:49):
five three zero seven hundred. The first one coming in
saying corruption is not bad. Corruption is only bad if
I'm not part of it. Greg Sanke, probably is not bad.
Speaker 3 (27:02):
Corruption is only bad if I'm not involved.
Speaker 4 (27:05):
Yes, But if I'm pat, I defend it. I'll defended.
Speaker 2 (27:11):
That's that is Greg sache up on the stage right there.
Speaker 3 (27:16):
It's live. That's Greg Zankee coming in live from SEC
Media Days.
Speaker 2 (27:21):
That's a great text message. Appreciate that. Eight seven seven
three five three zero seven hundred. If you want to
get in and aboard. Another one coming through on that
text in line, what does Greg Sanke have to say
about the SEC going sixty four and sixty four in
league play in basketball this year?
Speaker 4 (27:37):
Huh so think about it.
Speaker 3 (27:39):
We know how dominant they were in the non conference
season the SEC.
Speaker 1 (27:42):
They were one hundred and eighty five and twenty three.
Speaker 5 (27:45):
Since January fourth into Tuesday, the SEC teams are eighty
two and eighty two.
Speaker 6 (27:56):
It's not as if one.
Speaker 2 (27:57):
Team of two teams or three, they're eighty two and
eighty two like there's been.
Speaker 3 (28:01):
No that's Carl rep that feel bad. Just didn't. Carl
was doing a lot of prep, he didn't have a
lot of sleep. It didn't. It didn't click.
Speaker 2 (28:12):
That's funny for those of you that might be confused
out there, it's you know, if you're playing in an
SEC in conference game, one of the SEC teams has
to lose one of them, one of them has to lose.
So that's how you get that math in that it's
not that impressive. I would like to know what Greg
(28:34):
Sankie has to say about that.
Speaker 3 (28:35):
Yeah, what about that? Greg?
Speaker 2 (28:39):
Great text messages all around eight seven seven three five
three zero seven hundred this morning gets you in a
board if you have any comments, anything else that you
want to provide the program this morning.
Speaker 4 (28:50):
Two great listeners out there doing that.
Speaker 3 (28:52):
Sorry I stepping on you there, Greg Sankie. He said,
let me be clear, the athletics is not broken. Quote
I have more of that, he said. College athletics is
not broken, but it is strained. Okay, those of us
in higher education, Greg, you're not in higher education and
within college athletics will continue to adapt as we provide
life impacting opportunities and create lifelong memories for young people
(29:16):
across our nation. Should take a freaking hike.
Speaker 2 (29:19):
Greg.
Speaker 3 (29:20):
First of all, grade you have nothing to do with
higher education. It probably should zero nothing except for the
name of the school is on these guys jerseys.
Speaker 4 (29:31):
That's it.
Speaker 2 (29:32):
A lot of news coming out of SEC media days
this morning because Zach Barnett putting this out from FootballScoop
dot Com saying that Greg Sanki just barely put out
a new math formula, the SECS eight is greater than
everyone else's nine. Talking about conference games the SEC is
going to play and how they're going to stay at
nine conference games. This has been the biggest, I think,
(29:56):
fighting point over the new playoff expansion to sick team
teams Jordan because the Big Tens situation, the Big twelve situation.
Their whole argument is that, hey, we're playing nine conference games.
Well the SEC is only playing eight, and then they're
scheduling maybe one other power for team they're not, but
(30:18):
they're not. It depends on who it is. Because look,
if you look at Texas, where's Texas start Week one
at Ohio State. Yeah, so you've got like a couple
of teams that are scheduling those big time games. But
it's not every single team. It's not every single you know,
every single week. And for the most part, I mean,
(30:38):
they all play two FCS schools, right.
Speaker 3 (30:41):
Yeah, and a lot of them play them in November.
Speaker 2 (30:43):
Yes, they play like the Citadel in the second week
of November as like a de facto bye week before
ramping up for a championship game.
Speaker 4 (30:50):
Right yeah.
Speaker 3 (30:51):
I mean, like, do you want to know Texas that
you mentioned Ohio State? Texas plays Ohio State. Do you
want to know the three other non conference games?
Speaker 4 (31:00):
I sure do.
Speaker 3 (31:00):
San Jose State, UTEP and Sam Houston and DIAG A
wild guess where all those will be played at Texas?
Speaker 2 (31:07):
Yeah, you're telling me, they're not going to go play
at San Jose State against Kenny and Montialolo.
Speaker 3 (31:12):
No, I'll be honest with you. Bryce, you're asking me,
would you rather go watch it? Would you rather go
sit outside in San Jose or in Austin in September.
I'll take San Jose.
Speaker 4 (31:24):
I would too. I don't.
Speaker 2 (31:26):
I don't, I don't think. I don't think Steve Sarkesian
no would.
Speaker 3 (31:32):
But but so yeah, I mean yeah, I you know,
good on you for playing Ohio State and go on.
Speaker 2 (31:37):
Also, none of those are FCS schools, by the way.
Speaker 3 (31:39):
No, but like these other we could go down. I'll
pull up the different schedule.
Speaker 2 (31:45):
I'd like to see Georgia. Let me know, Georgia they
playing Clemson again this year?
Speaker 3 (31:49):
Find out here just a moment.
Speaker 2 (31:50):
They played Clemson out of the gates last year. Didn't
go well for Clemson at all. Clemson has not been
a great football team as of late.
Speaker 3 (31:57):
Georgia starts with Marshall and then plays this would be
tough Austin p my friend, and then they go right
into conference play. But remember November twenty second. You got
to fit in Charlotte in there. So that's your non
conference for Georgia, Marshall, Austin P and Charlotte. And here's
(32:18):
the thing is, I if I'm an SEC team, and
I'm if I'm on the committee, I'm not going to
kill the SEC or anybody for losing to a power
for non conference school unless it just turns out that
that's they're terrible, because we want to see those games.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
Another non conference game on Georgia's schedule. I'm over here
trying to do the math on that. That was three, right, yeah,
been there before, There.
Speaker 3 (32:44):
Should be there's Marshall, Austin P. You're right, there are
only three.
Speaker 2 (32:48):
Oh, Georgia tack Okay, Georgia tack all Right, Sorry I
got distracted.
Speaker 4 (32:53):
I was trying to count.
Speaker 3 (32:54):
No, no, no, that makes sense as they play them every year.
So here's something actually pretty interesting. Georgia's se seek schedule.
They're done November fifteenth.
Speaker 4 (33:03):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (33:04):
But yeah, I mean like if, but the committee generally speaking,
I'm trying to think of examples. Have they killed SEC
team for losing to good non conference teams? Like who lost?
It was LSU lose to USC last year they win
that game. I'm trying to remember, because neither team ended
up being that good, so it didn't really matter. Yeah,
but if I look, if you go, like if here,
(33:25):
if Texas goes on the road and loses at Ohio State,
that is not going to hurt their national championship prospects.
It's not like that's a good that's that's what we
want to see, good games like that. And I don't know,
I just don't think they'll be punished that badly for
that now. I don't think they should.
Speaker 2 (33:45):
I wonder if they would have lost that Georgia Tech
game at the end of the year Georgia, because that
was what six overtimes, right there was a crazy game
back and forth. If Georgia would have lost, how bad
that would have affected them?
Speaker 3 (33:58):
Maybe because Georgia Tech wasn't great last but that's still
that's an ACC's school. Yeah, yeah, I wouldn't kill them
for that.
Speaker 2 (34:04):
And they weren't awful either, No, they were very middle
of the road in the ACC. So yeah, that's a
curious thing. That's a curious thing. Eight seven seven three
five three zero seven hundred is that text? And like
you can hit us there if you have any thoughts
on the SEC, on Big twelve, on anything else.
Speaker 4 (34:21):
Speaking of the Big twelve.
Speaker 2 (34:23):
Big Twelve Media Days wrapped up last week and got
the latest from the commissioner. In Brett your Mark once
again doubled down on the Mexico thing. Jordan Bianucci once
play games in Mexico, thinks that the Big twelve is
an international product, international brand. It's all of this stuff. Jordan,
(34:44):
My question to you, now, maybe you just do that obviously.
I think this was starting with the Olympic sports and
they're trying to move it to basketball, maybe football one day.
But if you are a Big twelve school and revenue
is top notch, like the most important thing. If you're
a Big twelve school, are you going to give up
a home game to go and play in Mexico where
(35:05):
you're gonna make your your your money at the gate,
You're gonna give up that revenue to go play a
game in Mexico. I think that's the biggest flaw with
all of this is that in a day and age
where money is the biggest thing that we're fighting over
and the biggest thing for all teams twenty million dollars,
revenue sharing got to make sure you make enough money
to keep up with all of it, right.
Speaker 3 (35:24):
Well, I would have to think that the Big Twelve
is paying those teams enough to there where they're making
at least what they would make gate revenue wise, because
there's not a chance that they would give that up.
Speaker 2 (35:39):
Not only that, but then you have the travel expenses.
Speaker 3 (35:42):
Yeah, there's no there's no way, right, I mean, like
I'd have to find out for sure, because if you
are giving that up, it's the dumbest decision of all time,
right because listen, it's still stupid to me. College football
is not going to go into a come international sport.
It's not What about college football would interest someone who's
(36:04):
not from the United States and has followed college football
because the football This is where I feel like these conferences,
the Big Twelve, they're trying to make a splash and
they're just overthinking it. Like the football is not. If
any football at all is going to become international, it'll
be the NFL because it's the best football. Why would
(36:27):
I It's it's like it's like if two it's I mean,
it's not a perfect analogy, but it's like bringing two
high schools from New Mexico to play high school football here.
What why? I don't care? Why would I go watch that?
Speaker 2 (36:43):
I think if the brands are big enough there are
people in Mexico that there's enough people in Mexico that
care enough about college football.
Speaker 3 (36:51):
But there's not a big twelve brand that's big enough
that there are people in Mexico they give a damn,
it's not Texas, that Texas is the one.
Speaker 4 (37:00):
Arizona.
Speaker 3 (37:01):
No, they're right there.
Speaker 4 (37:03):
Yeah, I bet.
Speaker 2 (37:05):
Look, remember when we were talking about UTRGV baseball, And
there's a reason I'm bringing this up. UTRGV was the
first school in America to start not only their football program,
but broadcasting their baseball games in Mexico, and then the
rest of their sports followed, and they pulled six thousand
(37:25):
plus people for baseball down there. And they actually have
a big fan base insomuch that they post their articles
not only in English, but they have an sid specifically
to put it out in Spanish. They have a Spanish
broadcast of every single sport that they do too.
Speaker 3 (37:43):
Yeah, but that's because half the people that live in
that town, in that area in Edinburgh speak Spanish.
Speaker 4 (37:50):
That's right. How many people in Tucson do too.
Speaker 3 (37:52):
A lot of people, But that's not what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (37:54):
Well, that's what I'm saying I think that Arizona, probably
in Arizona State and some of these other big twelve
schools have a big brand in Mexico that they could
pull this off.
Speaker 3 (38:02):
I don't think they. I don't think they do. I
don't think that.
Speaker 4 (38:05):
I think Arizona is a bigger brand than U TRGV.
Speaker 3 (38:08):
It is, but UTRGV there aren't. They're not playing a
ton of games in Mexico. And also they're literally on
the border two sounds like right there, yeah, but it's
not the same Edinburgh that area down there. It is
historically speaking like it is a they call it a
border land because it is so there's not a border.
(38:31):
You could argue that there's not like it's it's different,
it really but my point is just that, no, for
college football, if you want to say, fine, okay, if
you want to say if you want to have Arizona
play on the other side of the border right there, okay,
I get that that I understand. I don't understand Kansas
(38:56):
State going down there to play or going to Irland
to play. It's it's it's kind I don't even think
it's that cool. I'm like, whatever, but it's not gonna
win over Like there's just if it does great, but
I just don't see it. What what about college football
would interest an international audience.
Speaker 2 (39:17):
Well, I think the Ireland thing is shown and proven
it's worth at this point because I mean, they played
what was it, Georgia Tech and Boston College there last
year and for I mean all intents and purposes, that
was a success for them. And they're going to inso
much that they continue to do it. And they're going
to send Iowa State and Kansas State over with the
(39:37):
pop Tarts mascots. Great, that's the big that's another big
announcement the Big Twelve media days. They're sending the pop
Tarts mascots from the pop Tarts Bowl.
Speaker 3 (39:46):
Well, that'll do it. I changed that, I stayed correct.
Speaker 2 (39:50):
My point being is that I think there, I think
there is a there's a market for it. There's a
market for it. At the same time, what does that
tell you about the Big Twelve in America that they
have to start looking for other markets for their football
product if there's not a big enough market for money
(40:13):
and TV revenue and different types of revenue in the
United States. You get what I'm just saying there, Yeah,
you have to start looking in Mexico because your brand's
not big enough in the United States to make you
enough money.
Speaker 3 (40:24):
Yeah, I'm just and my point like, who in Mexico
cares about college I just don't get it.
Speaker 4 (40:32):
I think there's enough to fill up a stadium, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (40:35):
But who cares? What does that do for you? Because
after they leave, no one gives an ass anymore that
you can fit. That's not what I'm saying. You can
fill up a stadium for a random, isolated event, but
that's not why you're going. You're trying to get a
foothold in there so that people follow those teams afterward.
And I don't know why they would. I get why
(40:57):
they would follow NFL teams because that's the best. If
you like American football, that's the best there is. But
you and I don't watch college football. No one in
this country watches college football because it's the best football
there is to watch. Quality wise, Now we watch it
the whole point of college Like, what draws people in
are the tradition of it and the schools and that
(41:20):
kind of that emotional investment and the rivalries. That's what
draws is. The football in the field is not that great.
It's not good compared to the NFL, Like, that's not
the draw of it. So I've never understood that idea
of let's take especially when you're like, let's take that
rivalry game Pharmageddon, that that gain that everyone here in
(41:41):
Kansas in America loves and what makes it a rivalry,
and let's put it in Europe where no one cares
about it. That makes zero sense.
Speaker 2 (41:52):
Ireland loves their football, Yeah exactly.
Speaker 3 (41:56):
Maybe they're just confused. They're like, Ireland loves football, Like
we had no idea.
Speaker 2 (42:00):
We got to hit a break here. Coming up next,
our friend Gracie Gold, a US figure skater and Olympic champions,
going to be joining us on the flip side. We'll
chat with her about what's coming to Salt Lake and
how you can get involved in that as well. That's
here next on Bryson bing utub one of three, nine
ninety three ESPN
