A reminder, high school football back in action this weekend.
(00:43):
We got a couple of games Thursday, Friday, even Saturday games.
There's a lot more Saturday high school football game. Should
that be allowed? Jordan Bianucci playing football on Saturdays? Yeah,
at high school level, it.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Doesn't make It doesn't make any sense to me. Like
if you're a high school, if you're a we had
grown up, it's Friday night lights, it's not Saturday afternoon.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
There was one game that I played in high school
that ended up being Saturday afternoon and it was awful.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
Well one was this the one where you had to
play two different teams at the same time.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
No, that one was awful. I don't think that one
was on a Saturday. I think that was a Friday. Uh.
The one there was we had a lightning delay and
then they said, yeah, we're not finishing this game. It
was out at West Lake. We ended up having to
play at the Saturday, literally the day after, and they
were like, yeah, let's not do it at seven pm
(01:34):
like normal people. No, let's play it at three pm
in the hottest part of the day. This was like
week two of the season, so it was August twenty something,
and it was like one hundred and something degrees outside.
It was awful.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
That that's see, that's what's stupid is playing it at
any other time, except like I mean, yeah, that's just dumb.
They should really start those games like seven thirty. It's
hotter than hell out there. Yeah, and most of these
teams now were playing on that crap turf, so it's
one hundred and forty degree. It's just terrible for everybody.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
No kidding, Well, Saturday, this upcoming Friday Friday night at
seven pm, we get it started back up again. Provo
takes on Green Canyon. You can hear all of the
action right here on one of three nine to ninety eight.

Let's jump over to the text in line at eight
seven seven three five three zero seven hundred. Get a
couple of these text messages popping through as we read them.
One coming through about the Padres stating the Padres have
scored four more runs than the Giants this year, but
(02:49):
have won eight more games and they are only one
game out. Baseball is brutal.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
We talk about that all the time, isn't it weird?
Like so the Padres we were talking out there, they're
game back of the Dodgers, and the Giants are done.
Giants are nine games out, and are they're done out
of the wild card as well? They just can't they suck.
So the Giants are twenty three and twenty one in
one run games, like all right, the pod Rays in
(03:18):
one run games are twenty five and sixteen. So how
much of that is is luck? And how much of
it is you're a good clutch team. That's my like. Seriously,
because one run games. I'm gonna be honest with a
lot of that is luck. That is not. I just
(03:41):
don't buy that. Now. Are the pottery Is a better
team than the Giants? Yes, absolutely, but that is a
huge discrepancy in one run games. The Dodgers, by the way,
nineteen and sixteen in one run games. So are the
pod that leads?
Speaker 2 (03:55):
You know?
Speaker 3 (03:56):
How lucky have the Potterys been?
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Is the question? Well, kind of to the same point.
If you look at where the Dodgers are at respective
of where the Padres are at, and we mentioned Padres
just one game back from leading that division runs scored.
If we're talking about that, the Dodgers have scored six
hundred and fifteen runs this year and the Padres have
only scored four hundred and ninety three. Yet they're only
(04:18):
one game back.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Give me the what's a run differential those two?
Speaker 2 (04:21):
The run differential for the Dodgers is plus eighty two.
The Padres is plus thirty eight.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
See that's what I mean.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
The Giants are plus eight. Jeez, So you've got a
problem if you're the Dodgers at giving up runs, and
does that change as you hit the playoffs? Possibly you
get guys back. I just don't understand how the Dodgers
have given up five hundred and thirty three runs this
year when they went out and bolstered their bullpen and
(04:49):
have an all star pitching staff, but they just can't
throw them throw the ball.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
It's injuries. It's injury. But like I said it would
be said last hour, they're back every like Snail's back,
Glass now's back, Yamamoto's pitching, well, Shean's there, Kershaw's not
hurt apparently, and Kershaw's actually looked pretty good as last
few starts. So it's not if the Dodgers are still
giving up a ton of runs at this point. Yeah,
(05:13):
that's a problem because they're back every you know, everybody's healthy,
it seems like. And we'll see how the bullpen looks.
That's I just isn't that amazing? After all of this,
we're still like, how are the Dodgers not running away.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
With this thing?
Speaker 3 (05:29):
But you know, you look, speaking of the one run
games thing, like the Brewers seventy four and forty four
best record in baseball, they're twenty three and thirteen in
one run games. So like, if you're a the great
teams are good in one run game, like obviously by
definition they have to be. You look at like trying
to look at another like the Yankees one run games?
(05:52):
What are the Yankees eighteen and nineteen? Like, that's a problem.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
What do you got to do? If you're the Chicago
Cubs sixty seven and fifty your run differentials through the
plus one hundred and seventeen. I think it's the second
best in all of baseball. It is the second best
in all of baseball behind the Milwaukee Brewers plus one
thirty eight. Jordan, jeez. They've scored five hundred ninety four
runs only given up four hundred and fifty six. The
(06:20):
Chicago Cubs have scored five hundred and ninety nine runs.
They're a run scoring machine this year, yet there's still
six and a half games back from the Brewers in
the Central I don't.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
Think this to me is less than less about the
Cubs and more the Brewers have won ten in a
row for the second time this year. Yeah, well, what
are you gonna do? That's you just there's nothing you
can do about that.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
Now.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
The Cubs could use so I thought they should have
gotten more arms at the break. I think they could
have used some pitching. But the Cubs are They'll be okay.
Then they're playing okay right now. They so I don't
it's a good question. I don't know. I don't see
them coming back in that division though. The question if
(07:07):
you're the Brewers is you know you've had good teams
in the past. It's getting over that hump. Can you
can you beat the Dodgers? Can you beat the Phillies?
The answer is yes, you can, but you know you
got to do it in October?
Speaker 2 (07:20):
All right. Last thing on run differential, because I love
looking to run differential in Major League Baseball. When we
get to this point in the season, it's the Colorado Rockies.
Have you pondered and taken a venture over to see
what Colorado has done?
Speaker 4 (07:33):
I have not.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
So they have scored four hundred and thirty eight runs
this season, which I mean, that's not terrible. No, you're
kind of you know, middle of the road whatever.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
Well, they play a freaking course, should be scoring some runs.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
They've also given up seven hundred and sixty eight runs
this year minus three hundred and thirty. Oh my gosh,
do you want. We're getting into historical number territory here.
This is this is fantastic.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
Listen to this. The Rockies against right handed pitching this year,
when they face a right handed starter, they're twenty six
and sixty. So you're like, okay, that's not good. When
they face a left handed starter, the Rockies are four
and twenty eight. Think about that, they've won like the
Oregon Ducks. It's August twelfth. They've won four games against
(08:27):
left handed pitchers. That's amazing. Four games.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
That'll kill you.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
They're four and twenty eight against left handed pitching. That's
that's just to give like, to give you a comparison
to Brewers are twenty five and eleven against lefties.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
You know, it's so crazy that that something so simple
is just a righty versus a lefty pitcher out there
on the mound, could still change the entirety of a
baseball game. Oh, it's huge because I just made the
Oregon Ducks reference. That was the reason why Utah Valley
was able to beat Oregon. They're splits against lefties were awful,
(09:06):
So Utah Valley threw the lefty and they won the
baseball game.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
Yeah, it's no it is it's huge. That's been a
giant issue, giant issue, a big no pun intended for
the Giants. They've been terrible against left handed pitching. So
if you're opposing staff and you have any flexibility going
into a series with the Giants, you throw your lefties.
They can't beat lefties. The Giants this year they are
(09:32):
what are they against lefties? Thirteen and twenty one? So
it's just yeah, I mean it's the Rockies are the world.
They're just bad.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
But I don't I mean, that's one way to pick
playoff teams right there. You got to go look and
see what the splits are versus. Like, if you've got
a team that hits well against both teams, all right,
I'm going I'm rolling with that team. If there's a
team there that hits bad against one certain side, one
certain arm, yeah, bet against those those guys because they're
(10:02):
going to see those arms all throughout the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
We'll tell you what, if you play fantasy baseball or
you bet on baseball, this is what I look at
this because like if absolutely if you're betting on and
this is what Vegas looks at this too, Like don't
get me wrong, Yeah, like if the there's a look
at the Rockies the spread on Rockies games when they're
facing the lefty. I guarantee you it's not great. Like
you're not getting great value. You get run line like
(10:26):
you're not yeah exactly what's the money line on that?
But yeah, absolutely, you look you want to win your
fantasy league. I'm telling you. You look at stuff like that.
There's a reason there's a reason I'm a champion fantasy
baseball player, all right, it's because I look at I
look at the deep stats.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
You might be the only dude that I know that
plays fantasy baseball really really.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
That that's that's odd to me, because you know.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
At least maybe there's not a lot of people that
talk about it, that are willing to admit that they
play fantasy baseball.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
It's true because well, you know, fantasy baseball players, we
all look down on fantasy football because we're.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
You change your roster once a week exactly. I do
it every day.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
Yeah, I'm grinding every day during the summer. Like if
you seriously, I like, try to get the people that
play in my league. I'm like, hey, you guys want
to do fantasy football. And every year they're like, dude,
I'm exhausted, Like I don't know, I'm like, I need
a break from this. Like, Okay, I get it. I'll
(11:30):
tell you what, man. If you guys, if you like
fantasy football, like, if you're really into fantasy football, you
would love fantasy baseball because it's harder. Yeah, and it's
it's it's really fun.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
I enjoy fantasy football, which, by the way, is right
around the corner. We're gonna have to get that draft
started up here soon. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
Am I back in that league?
Speaker 2 (11:51):
Yeah? You're you got the invite? I think I haven't
heard anything from anybody yet, so I'll follow up and
let you know. Okay, but I'm sure you'll be back, right, Yeah,
I'm sure you'll be back, don't I wouldn't worry too
much about it. Anybody else out there that wants to
jump into our fantasy league gieing us up on the
Texan line. We'll let you in.
Speaker 3 (12:11):
Yeah, please do.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
That's where we're at at this point in time.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
Got nothing.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
Yeah eight seven seven three five three zero seven hundred.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
Should we do a specific show fantasy football league?
Speaker 2 (12:21):
We could? I know today is ESPN's Fantasy Football Day.
What does that mean? They're going through. It's just like
a full day dedicated to fantasy football today across ESPN's platforms.
So they are they're giving you the rundown of all
things fantasy football today. Everything you need to know, who
(12:45):
the guys are to pick up, who you want to draft,
who you don't want to draft, Kyle Pitts everything. Okay,
all right, So if you want to win your fantasy leagues,
you keep locked into ESPN all day long.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
If you enjoy checkers, I want to play some fantasy football.
You want to play some chess, you come play some
some rotisserie baseball.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
All right, there you go. H eight eighteen. This morning,
got a couple of soundbites that we want to play
for you. Let's start with the New York Yankees. Chris
mad Dog Russo talking about the New York Yankees and
more specifically Boone and his his ability to manage baseball
or not. This is what Chris mad Dog Russo had
(13:28):
to say about Boone and the Yankees at this point
in time.
Speaker 5 (13:31):
But I think there's eight managers in the sport better
than freaking Boone.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
I mean, I'm not going to.
Speaker 5 (13:35):
Give you a snicker because he's old but he won
a World championship too, But he hitch Francona Boachie Roberts.
You know, the there's a lot of Lovellore. There's a
lot of managers in the sport who were better than Boone.
He is barely in the top ten. These are the
New York Yankees.
Speaker 6 (13:56):
Well, I know they didn't want to hire a Boachi
because they got to what you know, fun help us,
all that nonsense. Frank ConA gets a job again. You're
telling me that Boone is a better managine than Tarry
Frank ConA? Are you freaking crazy? How did Frank Cone
end up with the Reds? Did the Yankees put a
call in? See Frank Conner? Hey, Terry had a bad
World Series? A manager killed us in Game one. He
killed him in Game one. Guys, that was awful.
Speaker 5 (14:19):
And Frank connoran's up in Cincinnati.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
He's not better than the court.
Speaker 6 (14:22):
Now, listen, everybody loves Boone and he's not a bad manager.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
That is mad dog going after Aaron Boone.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
I like that the Tugus twelfth and they're going like
in Game one of the World Series nine months ago.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
Is Dave Roberts really a better manager?
Speaker 3 (14:41):
So that's funny you bring that.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
Up, because I you could. We could put you out there,
Jordan and the Dodgers could win a World Series with
you managing, not saying that you're dumb or anything. I
could go out there. I don't know how to manage baseball.
Speaker 3 (14:54):
Have you seen my fantasy baseball team? Of course I
could manage them a world series.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
But it's all my whole point being is, oh, yeah,
we need someone to throw. All right, sho hey, you're up,
get out there on the mountain.
Speaker 3 (15:05):
Listen. Now that the d H is universal, both of
us could manage a base no kidding, No. What I
heard him say, is Dave Roberts a better manager there
than Aaron Boone. It's a good question. I do think
that Dave Roberts is maybe a little underrated because it's
not his fault that he has a has a great roster.
(15:29):
Like I think he's good managing personalities. I think Boone
is good managing personalities. I think Boone can handle it. Take.
We talk about this all the time. Look, you have
to have a special to something to manage in New
York and to play in New York because it never stops.
Like just the Meat, the constant pressure of the media.
(15:50):
It's just it's constant. So it's different. It's different than
Terry Francona managing in Cincinnati. Now Francona managed in Boston
and won a World one, what one World Series? Two
World Series, so he gets it like he could manage
in New York. Not a problem. But I'm with you.
I'm looking at the list here. How many guys I
would take over? Aaron Boone if I were at a
(16:13):
club lebebbo Yeah, I would take him. Alex Cora, No,
with the Red Sox, I take Boone. I like Craig Counsel,
you know, with the Cubs. I think he's a great manager.
Terry Francona, Yes, Boche Boche absolutely, Maybe not long term
because I don't know how long Boachie wants to do it.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
Vote.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
I like Steve. I don't know if I would take
him because he's it's only his second year managing. Steven
Vote's going to be a great manager. I like him
a lot.
Speaker 2 (16:38):
In Cleveland. How about our friend with the Padres.
Speaker 3 (16:41):
That's a good question. Would I take Everybody hates him? Yeah, No,
I don't like him. Everyone does say about I don't
like him, the Mike Shield. I don't like him in Saint.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Louis, Brian Snicker. Everybody wants to run him out of Atlanta.
Speaker 3 (16:54):
Well, he's not paying attention to the game. That's an issue.
Speaker 2 (16:59):
Ron Washington was the guy that was paying attention to
games there in Atlanta, and he left.
Speaker 3 (17:03):
He did leave. Now he's up in the booth at
the in LA. Can't even hopefully he's okay. They say,
hopefully he's doing all right. I would take aj Hinch
like Russo said, I would Dave Roberts. I probably would
take Dave Roberts over Boone. Who's managing Who's oh aj Hinch?
(17:23):
He said that in Detroit. That's okay. Maybe that's about
Bob Melvin and San Francisco. No, I'm not crazy about
Melvin right now. Although he's never had a great Melvin's
never had a phenomenal roster, Like he's been a really
good manager, never had a great roster, so it's hard
to kind of judge him. John Schneider's done a nice
job in Toronto, so I don't know. I'm kind of
(17:46):
with Russo as far as like maybe ten guys that
are that are better than Boone What's I mean not?
Is it Aaron Boone's fault that the bullpen can't get
guys out in the seventh in the eighth innings.
Speaker 2 (17:59):
Here's my thing is that he's been there. This is
his ninth year. Yeah, that's a long time. That's a
long time to be around New York and have a
lot of opportunities with a lot of dudes that have
come through that franchise to not have any success besides
one World Series appearance. If I'm not mistaken, Yes, yeah,
(18:21):
well he's been there.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
Here's the issue with the Yankees, and we were talking
about this yesterday, is it's not the Yankees don't play
good and they mentioned this in the clip with Russo,
they don't play good baseball, fundamental baseball. We're talking base
running mistakes, guys not remembering how many freaking outs there
are over running balls in the outfield, just really stupid,
(18:45):
embarrassing mistakes for major league players. And is that Boone's fault?
I don't know. That seems to me, that's more to
me an organizational issue because that is now does it
need to be emphasized more at the big league level?
Speaker 2 (19:02):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (19:02):
Maybe, But I don't know, do you play that on
the manager mental mistakes of it. I mean, ultimately he's
responsible for it. Yeah, but I don't know if that's
really his fault. Guys should know that stuff when they
come up. You're not learning that at the big league level.
Speaker 2 (19:25):
Maybe you need to reteach it.
Speaker 3 (19:27):
You got to do something because good lord, at.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
Some point, when it happens so often, maybe maybe you
gotta remind guys a little bit.
Speaker 3 (19:38):
You have to emphasize it. You have to, Yeah, you do.
You have to do something so that guys know it's
important that. Look, the Yankees won last night because they
hit I think three solo home runs. That's what the
Yankees recipe. That's great, and that is more important than
playing really great defense, just value wise. I'd rather have
(20:00):
a lineup full of dudes that are hitting three run
shots and have a mediocre defense. The Yankees don't have
that big of a buffer zoned or you know what
I'm saying, Like they don't. It's not they don't have
a huge margin of error obviously because they're losing games
because they're making stupid mistakes. So yeah, at some point,
if you're the manager, what do you do you sit guys, dad,
(20:23):
you know, what I mean, like, it's hard. This isn't
college where you can be kind of, you know, college football,
you're a dictator and you can kind of do whatever
you want. Yeah, guys are making way more money than
you are. Well, it's like the NBA. You're managing personalities.
It's hard. I don't know what you do, but you gotta.
That's costing them them games. And it's stuff that you
(20:44):
don't see from teams like the Astros, even the Dodgers.
You don't see that from the Dodgers. The Brewers, you
don't see that they're playing. They play good, clean baseball.
Speaker 2 (20:55):
These are grown men that you're dealing with in a clubhouse,
and you've got to be able to manage these guys
and have them win baseball games. It's tough thing. It's
a tough thing, for sure. One final thing, actually, let's save.
Let's save that other one. You'll hear about Cabrian Hayes
a little bit later on. We'll do that at start
of hour three is when we'll play that one with
the MLB and more news coming up your way. Then
(21:17):
next I do want to tell you. Andy Larson of
the Solid Tribune said Utah football can be a Big
twelve title contender if it does this one thing, We'll
tell you what that one thing is next, along with
hearing from Kyle Whittingham, the head coach on Saturday scrimmage.
That's all right here as we get back into some
more college football on Bryson Bianucci. Next on one O
(21:38):
three nine and ninety three ESPN.
Speaker 1 (21:40):
Big House to the Bounce House. From Lovell Edwards Stadium
to rice ecl Stadium. It's time to talk Cottage football
with Leis and Daugi in the morning on one O
three nine at ninety eight three the band part of
Utah's ESPN Radio Network.
Speaker 2 (21:58):
All right back at at eight thirty two, it is
Bryson Bianucci on one O three nine and nine a
three ESPN. The fan told you. We're going to tell
you that one thing that Andy Larson suggests Utah football
needs to do in order to turn their season, this
upcoming season, the twenty twenty five season, into a success.
We'll give you that in one minute time thirty one
(22:19):
Days of Football presented by Baskin Robbins. Every time we
talk football. You know our good friends at Baskin Robbins
are there. We're only eighteen days away from the kickoff
of the college football season here in the state of Utah.
Less than that, if you are interested in some early
Big twelve action out in Ireland, the Aerlingus Kickoff Classic
(22:39):
in Ireland, Jordan, any interest in going to Ireland to
watch football?
Speaker 3 (22:44):
Uh? Not so I would be interested to go to
Ireland to watch football. Not really, to be honest with you.
I mean, like maybe if I'm there. I don't know.
There's so many things to do in Ireland. I can
go to a college football game here, like I don't.
There's other siff be fun.
Speaker 2 (23:00):
You remember the first time they did the it was
Notre Dame that was playing.
Speaker 3 (23:05):
I didn't know Notre Dame is a different story too.
Speaker 2 (23:09):
You're right. It was who who did Notre Dame play
in that game? What?
Speaker 3 (23:12):
The University of Glasgow?
Speaker 2 (23:15):
Right, I can't remember who Notre Dame was playing. I'd
have to look it up. But they ran out of
beer before the first half was.
Speaker 3 (23:21):
Over, which how is that even possible in our Ireland?
Speaker 2 (23:25):
Seriously, the computers were crashing, they couldn't run transaction, That's
what it was. The Internet shut down the computer. They
didn't run out of beer. They had a situation one
might say with with the card readers or the internet
inside the stadium something like that.
Speaker 3 (23:44):
Yes, exactly, so what but I think they started like
handing out for you beer. It started handing out beer,
like I really I believe that.
Speaker 2 (23:51):
Yeah, hey, we'll get you in. Iou come back and
pay for that later once we get this thing back up.
Speaker 3 (23:57):
Ireland's not messing around. They have to say mattitude, as
my as coach did it in Penguiere in high school.
Speaker 2 (24:05):
Yeah, we're not checking IDs. You look old enough.
Speaker 3 (24:08):
Here you go, then you're fourteen, right, Okay, good.
Speaker 2 (24:14):
Look. I just think it'd be fun to go and
experience an international game once you got to pick the
right spot. I think Germany would be a fun one
for the NFL. Go to that Steelers game. I think
they're in Germany this year, if I'm not mistaken, I
know that the Falcons and Cults are playing in Germany.
The Steelers are playing in Ireland this upcoming season. Okay, yeah,
(24:35):
one of those two games would be fun for NFL football.
I would love to go watch, Like I actually think
the college football would do well in Japan, strangely enough,
because they play college football in Japan did you know that.
Speaker 3 (24:47):
Yeah, you had told me that.
Speaker 2 (24:49):
Yeah, because that one dude got their whole season band
because he smoked a little bit of weed right a
couple of years ago. The tight ship over there. Yeah,
So those different countries if you have to choose the
right country to go to and watch a college football game.
But I'd go, all right, let's shift over to the
University of Utah. Told you that I would tell you
(25:11):
what Andy Larson had to say about Utah and this
one thing that could make Utah football become a Big
twelve title contender if they're able to do it. Last year.
We all know five and seven season, they're coming off
of a bad year where they couldn't score the football.
This is what Andy Larson has to say. Said, but
five of those losses were within just one score. If
(25:34):
they had been able to score just one more touchdown
per game, you'd be looking at a ten and two record,
or really a nine to two record with the potential
with one potential overtime contest to win or lose. The
Utes eight point loss at Arizona State, but getting that
extra touchdown per contest would be game changing for the Utes.
(25:58):
Right now, confidence exists that the defense will once again
be strong, just as it has been despite being placed
under massive pressure. The Utes ranked second in the Big
Twelve behind BYU in scoring defense last season, and given
how often they were on the field, that's a massive win. Well,
if we take a look at what he's talking about there,
If you look at average points per game, BYU was
(26:20):
indeed number one in the Big Twelve, which was impressive
in their own right, nineteen point six per game. Nineteen
point six points per game is what BYU gave up.
Utah was right behind him at twenty point seven. The
next closest team was Arizona State at twenty two point six.
Jordan Binucci, let's start here with this question for you.
(26:41):
Will both BYU and Utah be number one and number
two respectively? You can interchange them whatever it may be
in defense, in points per game once again this upcoming season.
Speaker 3 (26:52):
No, man, that's so hard to predict.
Speaker 2 (26:54):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (26:55):
I'll say sure, I'll go you know, I don't know.
That's a good question. I have no reason to doubt that.
I'll put it this way, I won't be surprised if
they are, I won't be shocked. But that's hard to say.
It depends how much pressure b way you can get
on the quarterback with that defensive line, because that's if
(27:16):
they can get a lot of pressure, they'll they'll create turnovers.
Utah will be right there. You know, it's death taxes
in Utah football or Utah defense when it comes to
Utah football. So I wouldn't be surprised. Yeah, I mean,
who's another great defense in the Big twelve off the
I can't you know off the top of your head.
Speaker 2 (27:37):
The next closest was Arizona State last year twenty two
point six, But I don't know that I'd say they
were necessarily great. No, Houston, Houston had a good defense
twenty two point nine points per game. Iowa State was
right there, and then Colorado came in at number six. Surprisingly.
Speaker 3 (27:57):
Yeah, No, I mean like Utah's defense should be right there,
and Byu should do there. They returned so many dudes
and they brought over Tonu Vasa. So yeah, both those
defense should be right there.
Speaker 2 (28:11):
At the top. So the one question and the one
thing that we're looking at here is Andy Larson correct
and stating that if Utah just scores one more touchdown
per game, they're right there. Nine or ten wins during
the season. Well, let's take a look at what BYU did.
BYU was sixth in overall offense a season ago, so
not even in the top five. They scored thirty one
(28:32):
point two points per game. That led them to an
eleven win season. Last year, Utah a little bit further
down the list, they came in in a number fourteenth
in total offense, and they scored about twenty three point
six points per game, So you had seven, you know,
add another touchdown in an extra point each game to
(28:54):
that total. That bumps them up to right there at
thirty thirty one points per game. Jordan b and Uji
and that would put them right there at six or
seventh in the conference. And if BYU had an eleven
and two record, it's very possible that Utah could have
been double digits if they would have just scored one
single touchdown more per game. Is it possible?
Speaker 3 (29:15):
Devin dan Pierre Absolutely, I'd be surprised if they don't
at least they don't score one more touchdown per game.
They right, how can you not? That offense last year
was I mean historically bad because they didn't you can't
win without a quarterback. They just didn't have a quarterback.
(29:37):
And so that's why I think you look at these polls,
you look at preseason predictions, people are fairly high on
Utah because of stats like that. We talked about this yesterday. Yeah,
you can score one more touchdown a game. You should
be or at least you should be able to with
this offense. Absolutely, you have a quarterback, assuming he stays healthy,
(30:02):
that should be able to do that. I do think so.
Speaker 2 (30:07):
Yeah, it's pretty disgusting how bad that offense was a
season ago. They only scored two hundred and eighty three points.
They were only two teams worse that had lesser offensive
production than Utah. Arizona scored two hundred and sixty one
points throughout the entire season, good for twenty one point
eight points per game.
Speaker 3 (30:24):
Which that's shocking. Think about the guys they had.
Speaker 2 (30:27):
Yeah, and then Houston was the worst with one hundred
and sixty eight points. They scored fourteen points per game.
Speaker 3 (30:35):
And that's it. That's a game where Utah Houston worked,
Utah scores another touchdown, they win that game.
Speaker 2 (30:40):
Yeah. Look, hey, Houston could be a good football team
this year if they could keep up that defensive production.
They only allowed twenty two point nine points per game.
They were the fourth best defense in the Big Twelve,
but you wouldn't know it because they couldn't score it any touchdown.
Speaker 3 (30:52):
Yeah, it's a problem.
Speaker 2 (30:53):
They were awful on the offensive side of the football.
Houston could be that team similar to Arizona State from
a year ago. Yeah, where they come out of nowhere
because they've got a former five star quarterback now at
the helm and a four star freshmen sitting right behind him.
Where if things go wrong, they could plug that four
(31:14):
star freshmen in and see if it's going to go
a little bit better. They could come out of nowhere
and surprise a lot of people Houston this upcoming season
if they do the same thing, score one touchdown and
maybe a field goal more this upcoming season, maybe two touchdowns. No,
I'm with you.
Speaker 3 (31:30):
I buy that. Look, if ut has offense clicks, they're
gonna be good. Utah will be good. They will be
right there as far as like battling for a Big
Twelve title. And I mean like the offense is playing well,
not like it's iffy. If they play well, that's a
really good football team. If they if they play just okay,
(31:54):
they can hang in there with with anybody because I
do think the defense is that good.
Speaker 2 (31:59):
Well, I think it's fine because I think BYU and
Utah are in very similar situations, very similar spots. We
know both of their defenses are going to be great,
top three probably in the conference this upcoming season unless
things go really wrong. So we know the defenses are
going to be great to give their opportunities to win
(32:19):
football games. We just the biggest question marks are at
the quarterback position and then everything around them as well.
Speaker 3 (32:25):
Yeah, yeah, I'm more confident in UTA's offense right now,
or I should put more specifically in usk quarterback that
I am in BYUS and that may change after I,
you know, see a couple of weeks of actual games.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
But but yeah, it's very possible Devin dan Pierre could
step in and the pressure could be too much.
Speaker 3 (32:44):
Yeah, I don't get that vibe from him, though I
can see him turning the ball over too much and
that causes issues. I don't see him have it an
issue with the with the pressure, with with dealing with that.
He's got a coach who he's been with, Like it's
not a brand new system and brand new coaches like
(33:07):
it just seems like a dude that he's fine with
that he'll be okay.
Speaker 2 (33:11):
It also might not even be Devin damp here. It
might be the dudes that he's throwing to, the same
problem that he had at New Mexico, where dudes just
can't catch the football. Yeah, if we're running Land or
Barton at tight end and we're seeing Smiths down and
catch footballs, there might be a question mark or two
inside that wide receiver and tight end room that might be,
(33:32):
you know, making those that coaching staff cringe a little bit.
The dudes just can't figure out how to catch a football.
Speaker 3 (33:37):
No exactly, and by U has the opposite problem, but
they have a great wide receiver room and it's can
their quarterback get the ball to him?
Speaker 2 (33:47):
Can you see over the offensive lineman?
Speaker 3 (33:49):
That's an issue. See a lot of rollouts this.
Speaker 2 (33:51):
Year that a lot of questions that we'd love to
be privy to if you know, the access was there
to these scrimmages that happened over the weekend. Kyle Whittingham
spoke to the media more specifically about this and had
a couple of different things to say about how that
scrimmage went for the university of Utah over the weekend.
(34:14):
This is what Kyle Whittingham had to say.
Speaker 7 (34:17):
Well, it wasn't as physical as some scrimmage as we've
had with the ones. We had most of the ones
that thud work, not live and so that was a
little bit different in that regard. We've done that in
the past at times, and we just felt like that
was the best approach for the first scrimmage. Two's got
all the live work. They were live to the entire
(34:38):
scrimmage and so had good teaching tape. And I think
we're in a good place right now. We're wet, ten
practices in after today and fifteen more to go than
we were ready to play.
Speaker 3 (34:49):
And how do you feel about the wide Receiver group game?
Speaker 7 (34:52):
That group is coming along. We feel like we've identified
the top seven to seven or eight guys that are
going to be the travelers and that we're going to
sink all the rips into the rest of the world
so that that group is really starting to gel.
Speaker 3 (35:03):
I guess you could say, what doesn't look like with
your running back dep.
Speaker 7 (35:05):
You go, you know the top two guys would be
way Shawn Parker and Corey Rodgers, not necessarily in that order.
They're interchangeable as the one. We're also you know, having
some good production from Daniel Bray Racing Gillery, a couple
of freshmen that really looked like they have a lot
of promise. And then of course Devon is like a
(35:27):
running back back there at times, and so he's adding
to what we're doing. And then you know, you got
guys running the speed sweeps, the wide receivers that are
that are giving a supplement of the yards as well.
Speaker 4 (35:36):
Do not see like a workhorse type situation. The committee
not yet, not yet. It's more bi committee at this point,
but again it's still early. We've got fifteen practices left
and we'll see how it continues to develop. Has anybody
emerged in the back of the quarterback for you, No,
that's tight as it was prior to the scrimmage.
Speaker 7 (35:54):
They both did some really good things in the scrimmage.
They've they made in some mistakes and so that's an
ongoing process. The competition continue use and right now I
would say that's going to continue at least through the
next scrimmage and the next and final scrimmage which will
be on Providing and we gotta we gotta make a
decision shortly thereafter, but with but it'll continue until.
Speaker 3 (36:11):
Then with both of those guys.
Speaker 5 (36:13):
And how confident are you that they could get in
there if Devin needs time offer like, where are you
at in terms of.
Speaker 7 (36:18):
Kind of the guide? Yeah, that's a good question. Obviously,
Isaac is the one that has a divisional experience and
that definitely will has helped him and will help him
if he's called upon this year. We're not sure how
Bird will react in a in a game situation. He's
he's just a true finishment, and so that's that works
in Isaac's favor as far as the experience factor. But
(36:38):
Bird is a guy that is very mature, doesn't seem
to flinch when is when his numbers called, when he
gets his opportunities, and so we would have, you know,
whichever one emerges out of the guy will have confidence
in him and a way to go. You've got the
you've got the five freshman defensive tackles that we're looking
for help from.
Speaker 3 (36:55):
How is that?
Speaker 1 (36:56):
How is that? Groupless? Good?
Speaker 7 (36:57):
I think those guys have a ton of upside and
and the position group, the detacled position group is going
to be well stocked for years to come. You say
that with the portal as you never know, but at
least right now, we feel like we're in a good place.
Popo is ready doing a great job. Cause follisy kids
doing a great job. They're all they're all doing things
well and they're all coming along and learning and getting
(37:19):
better each day. But we think that we're going to
have some real superstars emerge from that.
Speaker 4 (37:25):
One of the big differences between Rogers and Parker in
the backfield.
Speaker 7 (37:28):
Well not a ton. They're both similar in size, you know,
five ten, five eleven, about two hundred and ten pounds.
They both do an outstanding job and picking up blitzz.
They're not afraid. They stick their nose in there. And
they're North and South guys, so they they run behind
their pads well and hit up field. And they both
have good hands, so they're they're very similar. The car
(37:50):
just has more experience, you know, way sounds just a true.
Speaker 3 (37:52):
Softness separation on that final corner spot opposite Scooby.
Speaker 7 (37:55):
Lake Cotton right now is starting to make a push
and so I'd say he's got the uh, he's got
the right now.
Speaker 2 (38:01):
All right. Some name drops from Kyle Whittingham that was
some good information in the short time they allowed him
to speak to the media. Yeah, yeah, what Yeah, my question.
The one thing that he said that stood out to
me this is this is my in depth knowledge of
this Friday, the last and final scrimmage a fall camp
(38:24):
at Camp. Kyle, you want to go climb a building
with some binoculars and see what we can see, you
know what, see if we can get some inside info.
Speaker 3 (38:33):
Yeah, we can go. I can climb the athletic the
Echos building. See what we can we can get get onto. Yeah,
we can do that. I can sneak in there, you
know what, we could go over there. Honestly, they'll let
you watch. They let us watch the last I don't know,
twenty twenty five minutes of practice last year. Got to
see Cam Rising hand the ball off a couple of times,
a couple of times.
Speaker 2 (38:54):
Very nice. Yeah, No, I did like the info from
Kyle Whittingham. He actually did give a lot of of
good insight into a lot of what was happening backup
quarterback situation, wide receiver room. He said, they're starting to
identify the six or seven guys they're going to travel
and they're starting to gel together. It sounds like he's
becoming more confident with those wide receivers.
Speaker 3 (39:13):
Jordan, Yeah, I mean that's we talked about this yesterday
was how much you buying what the coaches are selling here?
Like you know what I mean?
Speaker 2 (39:22):
I really needed the follow up question of how many
of those wide receivers are actually defensive guys? That that
should have been the very next question. But they make
them go so fast they you know, they don't give
them time to think about that. That's right.
Speaker 3 (39:33):
How many of those guys are starters on the defensive
side of the football. That's look, that's I kind of
buy it. I don't think he'd be that. I don't know.
It's tone you got to write. You have to listen
to the tone again. We're just like, these are crumbs,
we got nothing. That's where we're at. We're like, are
(39:56):
we buying what he's saying? And we're going to find
out the last Saturday in August.
Speaker 2 (40:01):
Yeah, we definitely are when they take the field just
about eighteen days away from kickoff, when they get ready
for UCLA. That's the latest from Camp Kyle, brought to
you by a friends over at Baskin Robbins thirty one

(41:20):
Bianucci a couple of different things that we need to
touch on in terms of notes to wrap up the
second hour. The first one is this story coming out
of out of Oklahoma Washington State where former Oklahoma quarterback
for current, excuse me, current Oklahoma quarterback, former Washington State
Cougar quarterback John Matteer has had his venmo activity leaked out,
(41:46):
not necessarily leaked out, someone stumbled across it. I don't
know if someone was just going through searching this kid's venmo.
But have you seen any of this that's been going on?
Speaker 3 (41:55):
I've not seen this.
Speaker 2 (41:56):
Okay, So, current Oklahoma quarterback John Mattier played at Washington
State from twenty twenty two through twenty twenty four, then
transferred to Oklahoma for the upcoming season. Okay back in
twenty twenty two, according to his VENMO, I laugh because
(42:17):
this is so so silly, so stupid that in November
of twenty twenty two is November twentieth, twenty twenty two,
John Matteer sent a VENMO payment to a guy named
Richard Roten, where he put the reason for said venmo
as sports gambling UCLA versus USC.
Speaker 3 (42:39):
How old?
Speaker 2 (42:39):
Wait?
Speaker 3 (42:40):
Twenty twenty two? How old was he.
Speaker 2 (42:41):
He was on the roster at Washington State in November
of twenty twenty two. There's multiple ones that also say
sports betting and sports gambling that were sent to the
same person.
Speaker 3 (42:54):
My defense, if I'm him is like, as a joke,
I'm How's house.
Speaker 2 (43:00):
But do you think I am?
Speaker 3 (43:01):
Yeah, They're like pretty stupid. I think you're pretty dumb.
Speaker 2 (43:05):
There's a lot of other ones that I can't read
on radio really of things that he put on there,
so he might be able to get away with that
defense that I was just messing around, I was being stupid.
Read all of these other ones that.
Speaker 3 (43:19):
Can't be real. I mean, these guys are dumb, They're
not that dumb, right.
Speaker 2 (43:24):
So here's what Pete Dammill tweeted out is said. Oklahoma
officials are aware of John Matteer's venmo activity that surfaced
online late last night that twice references sports gambling and
includes a reference to a specific game, which is the
USC UCLA game of November twenty twenty two. Mattier is
consistently denied to OH you officials ever being involved with gambling.
(43:45):
Per source, oh you officials are looking into the situation
after finding out about it. Late last night and planning
to be very proactive and exhaust every avenue. That's the
latest from Pete Damil regarding that situation.
Speaker 3 (43:58):
Great, did you see that Ohio wants to ban betting
on like they call micro bets, banning on like the
first pitcherm bat after the class a thing.
Speaker 2 (44:09):
Yeah, that might be a good idea also, like three
point shots and different things like that. Yeah, yeah, your
prop bets anything similar. Who knew that could be a problem?
Would a thought about that? Huh? So that's one thing.
Another thing that just came down recently was tweeted out
specifically about BYU basketball their first opponent when they go
(44:31):
and play in the the ESPN Events Basketball preseason tournament.
Here you go, John Rothstein, b why you will face
Miami and Georgetown will play Dayton in the first round
of the twenty twenty five ESPN Events Invitational in Orlando.
So another preseason game four BYU has been revealed, and
(44:55):
it will be against Miami when they take on when
and start out their twenty twenty five ESPN Events Invitational
in Orlando. So that's another piece of news that you
need to know about at this point in time. A
couple of other things that I want to bring to
your attention. Tomorrow, we'll be live at the UVU Golf
(45:16):
Invitational they're at in Orum. Now. My mind is escaping
me of what the golf course is called. I have
no idea what that course is down there, Sleepy Sleepy Ridge,

I will be tomorrow bringing you the latest from all

at twelve pm, but we'll be live there from seven

one in the entire state. And we were at University
of Oregon for the regional We walked over to their
soccer facility, and it is safe to say that Utah
Valley will have a nicer soccer stadium all around than
even the University of Oregon, which is something to say.
Speaker 3 (46:11):
As you say, maybe one of the what the nicest
one in the West.
Speaker 2 (46:14):
I've heard it's top five in the country, but I
cannot confirm that.
Speaker 3 (46:18):
Check it out.
Speaker 2 (46:18):
I want a tour, Oh yeah you can. If you
want a tour, you could show up on Friday. They'll
give you a tour.
Speaker 3 (46:25):

Speaker 3 (47:04):
We got we got not a lot coming through I
mean right now, not a lot of breaking, not a
lot of breaking news. Uh, I'm looking at Okay, I
got uh.
Speaker 2 (47:17):
Just a reminder to turn off your make your venmo
uh movements private moving forward here?
Speaker 3 (47:24):
Yeah, or maybe don't joke that you're betting on games
as a college athlete.
Speaker 2 (47:32):
No, I like that. I kind of like the joke.
It's pretty funny, do joke. Just just be ready for
the firestorm that's gonna come your way when you.
Speaker 3 (47:40):
Become it's so obvious, like like it's it has to be.
It's just so dumb that it's like the only thing worse,
like the only thing like more obvious. Would he if
he would have used his own team, But yeah, that
would have been Hey, gotta laugh.
Speaker 2 (47:58):
Oh, I hope it turns out to be a plea
choking the dude and it comes out and the guy's
just like, yeah, I venmoed him for whatever stupid reason.
I hope it's actually like a really dumb reason, like
something that this guy was embarrassed to venmo him for.
But he's gonna have to tell everybody what it really
was and just take the embarrassment rather than falling for
(48:20):
sports gambling as a as a player. We'll see, Yeah,
we'll see nine oh three this morning, we'll take a break.
Our number three coming your way on this Tuesday, August

more about the scrimmage situation that's happening down in Provo,

next year on Bryson Ba Nucci one to three, nine
and ninety eight three ESPN,
