Speaker 4 (05:01):
Let's jump right into the biggest news that happened yesterday
BYU Fall Camp. Aaron Roderck stood in front of the
media and had some important stuff to say. Now, some
might say, okay, yeah, he's just you know, giving.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Us a little bit of this, a little bit.
Speaker 4 (05:14):
Of that, letting us know what's kind of happening, but
not giving us the full detail. Let's hear what Aaron
roder had to say about the quarterback competition, but what's
happening there, and then let's discuss exactly what he meant
when he said this, Bear.
Speaker 6 (05:31):
Took the majority today and McKay got some as well.
As I mentioned Saturday, we can't keep going equal reps
with three guys anymore. So you know each day you're
gonna see right now McKay and Bear getting the majority
of the reps with the ones and the twos. And
that's where we're at right.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
That is Aaron Rodery talking about Bear Bachmeyer, the freshman
splitting the reps, taking the majority of the reps alongside
McKay Hillstead.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
Interesting. Interesting.
Speaker 4 (06:01):
We're gonna talk with Jackson Paine about this at a
twenty see what his thoughts are on all of this.
But a little bit of separation in the quarterback room.
Jordan Bi and Ucci, what were your first thoughts when
you heard or read the reports from Aaron Roderick?
Speaker 3 (06:13):
If you will you fall camp yesterday.
Speaker 5 (06:15):
I don't know if I was surprised, but it makes sense.
I guess if you would have asked me a week
ago which two guys are going to separate themselves, I
would have gone Bachmeier and McKay Hillstead. But it's still
somewhat you know, it pops like you notice it when
a true freshman who hasn't you know, he's had a
(06:36):
spring ball at Stanford and that's it is vying for
the starting position. So I intellectually it doesn't surprise me,
but you know, hearing it, I'm like, Okay, he's good.
He can play, because you know what I mean, like,
you're not going to give him equal reps unless you
think he has a real shot to be the starter.
Speaker 4 (06:55):
This surprised me a little bit, Jordan, because yesterday, what
did I say, We heard a little bit of a
report over the weekend from the scrimmage that one quarterback
had kind of stepped away from the rest. Right there
was that report from Jerem Jordan byu TV that said
Spencer Linton had docked with Aaron Roderick and he was
talking with the media and he said that there was
one quarterback that kind of had stepped away from the
(07:16):
rest of the pack.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
Now it almost seems.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
I don't know if Aaron Roddicks try to walk that back,
like he came out and was like, you know what,
I changed my mind on a Tuesday.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
It's not actually one quarterback.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
It's two quarterbacks and they're splitting the reps, but one
might have a little bit more and it sounds like
they're leaning towards the freshman and bear Bachmeyer maybe a
little bit.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Now, this quarterback race is far from over.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
And as we learned last year, apparently Gary Bohannon was
the leader through the clubhouse throughout all fall camp until
it came down to one final scrimmage at the end
where he threw four interceptions and they said, you know what,
you can't be the quarterback if you're not going to
take care of the football. That very well could happen
with a young quarterback. You got to expect a lot
of mistakes, a lot of learning curve, a lot of
different things with the young quarterback. And the other reason
(08:00):
why he was so surprising to me, Jordan, is because
yesterday I was over here talking about how I still
thought McKay Hillstead was the leader in the clubhouse, because
last week when we were at practice, there was a
very visible difference between bear Bachmeyer when he was running
the offense and McKay Hillstaid when he was running the offense.
And now we can chalk it up to twenty minutes
(08:22):
on one day that they allow us to watch practice,
and it's only twenty minutes of time that they allow
us in and get to see that, and we take
away what we can from those twenty minutes. But in
those twenty minutes, it looked like McKay Hillstead was heading
shoulders ahead of Bear Bachmeyer. So it was a little
bit surprising to hear that yesterday. But yeah, there is
(08:42):
going to be still a quarterback competition throughout the rest
of fall camp.
Speaker 3 (08:46):
That's why I was a little bit surprised here.
Speaker 5 (08:48):
Yeah, I get what you're saying. I still think it's
Hillstead's job to lose. It's because he didn't say like
Bachmeyer's the front runner. He just said. What he said
was Borgae is no longer being considered. That's basically what
he said. I'll say this, if you're by you, you'd
(09:10):
rather if all things are equal, you'd rather go Bachmeier.
He's younger, he gives you. I don't know, there's more
upside there athleticism wise, just just raw tools wise. So
if you're McKay Hillstead, what you're thinking is, Okay, I
really got to win this thing and make it pretty
(09:32):
clear and definitive that I'm the better quarterback because I
do think that, Yeah, they're gonna want if Bachmeyer can
grasp the playbook. They'd rather go with him, They'd rather
invest the time and the reps in him.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
I would think, I would think. So it seems like
you have more upside in a young freshman. Now, the
problem is, and the one thing you got to think
about is that you're going to have growing pains with
those freshmen, Jordan Man. Those growing pains, especially a quarterback,
can be a little bit tough. You're gonna see interceptions.
You're gonna see some silly mistakes. You're gonna see balls
(10:04):
that they thought they could fit in because they think
it's still high school football and there's not a lot
of athletes out there on the field, but there is,
and they're gonna think that that guy's not as fast
as he is and he's gonna be able to get
to a.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
Ball and track it down.
Speaker 4 (10:17):
All of that stuff is going to happen in the
first three weeks.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
Now. Luckily for BYU.
Speaker 4 (10:24):
You look at the first three weeks, and here's the
reason why they're considering actually putting a true freshman out
there on the field.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
When you look at the schedule.
Speaker 4 (10:31):
In your first three games, you've got Portland State, You've
got Stanford and you've got East Carolina.
Speaker 3 (10:37):
Those are winnable games.
Speaker 4 (10:38):
The freshman quarterback, once you get into conference play completely changes.
So if you're going to start your freshman quarterback, you
got to start him with your first three games to
get some experience and confidence under his belt right off
the bat, so that when you go into conference play,
he's beaming with confidence and he's ready to rock and
roll against far better teams than what he'll see in
(10:58):
the first three to four weeks of this.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (11:02):
Look, if you're by youth, the schedule is set up
very nicely because you're playing Stamford, which is I saw
yesterday somebody had them as the worst team in the
Power for the worst. So it's you. You do you have?
You're set up nicely to break somebody in. Uh So,
if it's again, I think it's I don't know. I
(11:24):
still am leaning Hillstead, But yeah, it sounds like it's
a closer race than we thought it was going to be.
But but yeah, I mean, all things since here's the
other aspect to it too, is I say, all things
being equal, you'll go with the freshmen. But at the
same time, even if McKay Hillstead's a little better, if
(11:44):
you're BYU. You want to win now because you have
the tools everywhere else. If this were the kind of
year where they're rebuilding defensively and the wide receiver room
isn't great, you'd go, Okay, why not just go with
the freshmen anyway, Just get him some reps. You're not
gonna win. They could win a lot of games with
good quarterback play. They're set everywhere else, So that's another
(12:08):
thing to consider.
Speaker 4 (12:11):
You know, one thing that I'm surprised nobody has asked
Bear Bachmeyer about. And maybe I missed this, but I
don't think he's been asked about in spring ball when
he was with Stanford running through that under Andrew Luck.
I know that Troy Taylor, he originally said that he
had committed to Stanford and was there because of Troy Taylor.
(12:33):
Troy Taylor gets fired at some point. I have to
go look at the timeline, but at some point Andrew
Luck took over that program for a solid while and
is still very involved in the on field stuff. Even
though he's just the GM, he is there in person.
He's probably the only GM in all of college sports.
I could be wrong on this, one of the only
gms in college sports because we hear about all these
(12:55):
big names. Damian Lillard just barely took on the GM
role at Weaver State. He's not gonna at Weaver State
helping these guys work out very often. Andrew Luck is
at Stanford. We've seen video of him running the offense,
showing these guys how it's supposed to work. And I
don't think anybody's asked Bear Bachmeyer about the ability and
(13:15):
how often he got to talk to and work with
Andrew Luck, even if it was just for three months
of his time when he was there for spring football.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
I'd be curious to know that.
Speaker 5 (13:23):
Yeah, well, day next time you see him ask him.
Speaker 4 (13:26):
I know that's definitely gonna have to be a question
that gets asked.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
I don't think it was for very long.
Speaker 4 (13:32):
And you'd think if he had a great relationship with
Andrew Luck, he probably would have stuck around at Stanford.
That's the other thing that I think is got to
take into account with his situation. All Right, that's your
look into the biggest news of yesterday coming out of
BYU fall camp. We'll keep you up today with more
updates as we move along. Do you want to remind
(13:53):
you live down here at Sleepy Ridge Golf Course in
Oreum for the Utah Valley Athletics thirty first Annual Invitational.
Down here, Uh, gonna be serving up some hot dogs
with the wrestling team, Jordan. I don't know if that's
a good thing or a bad thing, but that's what
I was told. We're gonna be cooking up some dogs.
We're gonna be handing them out. Sitting here at the
(14:13):
turn I'm hanging out on the back patio a.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
Little lonely right now. But the morning is just starting.
Speaker 4 (14:19):
People are just starting to pull up, starting to get through,
and we're gonna have a good time this morning here
at Sleepy Rich Golf Course. It's gonna be a great opportunity,
great fun. I wish you were down here. You should
have should have made the trip, my friend.
Speaker 5 (14:31):
Yeah, you know, someone, someone's got to get us on
the air though, keep that in mind, so someone has
press the button so that people can hear us. So i'll, i'll,
you know what we're doing. We're doing up here in
downtown Salt Lake City.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
Though.
Speaker 5 (14:43):
We got the big Utah football kickoff party here at
the studio.
Speaker 4 (14:48):
For Yeah, this was just bad planning all around. I
was planning on being at that. I'll try and maybe
I'll swing by and make the tail end of it.
Speaker 3 (14:54):
We'll see. So they got a bunch of driving for me.
Speaker 5 (14:56):
Though it is. They got a bunch of swag, got
a bunch of gear up here. So yeah, that's not
open to the public. By the way, I was gonna say,
come on out and check it out. Don't know, don't
come over here. We won't They won't let you in.
Speaker 3 (15:08):
You can come on and hang out with me.
Speaker 4 (15:10):
I don't know that they're gonna let you on the
golf course today unless you have a foursome that's gonna
be out here in the tournament.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
You can come on down and hang out. I'll put
you on the radio. Is that a good idea, Jordan?
Speaker 4 (15:19):
Give someone a headset, let them start talking about sports
a little bit.
Speaker 5 (15:22):
Yeah, what's the worst that could happen?
Speaker 3 (15:24):
Yeah, let's do it.
Speaker 4 (15:26):
You could also fire up the text line eight seven
seven three five three zero seven hundred gets you in
the board on that text in line here this morning.
We might be so dangerous to take and field some
phone calls this morning. Maybe talk a little quarterback competition.
Maybe we'll put you on the air with Kyle Beckerman.
If we're nice enough, let you ask him a question
or two. We'll see how that goes. All of that's
(15:48):
coming your way. Todd Phillips is going to join us,
the head coach of the u toab Alliman's basketball team,
walsout Jackson Paine coming up from the Deseret News at
a twenty to talk a little bit more football. So
it is a jam pack Wednesday edition of the show
out here at Sleepy Ridge Golf Course. We'll take a break,
we'll be back on the flip side, bringing you more
for Bryson Bianucci.
Speaker 3 (16:07):
One of three, nine and ninety eight three ESPN.
Speaker 1 (16:10):
Bryson Bianucci on one oh three nine and ninety eight
three ESPN The Pan. Download the Bryson Bianucci podcast wherever
you get your podcast today.
Speaker 3 (16:27):
All right, rocking and rolling this morning. Bryson Bianoosie back
on the air.
Speaker 4 (16:31):
One of three, nine and ninety eight three ESPN The
Fan Live out here at the thirty first annual Utah
Valley Athletics golf Tournaments.
Speaker 3 (16:40):
I'm Bryce Larsen.
Speaker 4 (16:41):
That's Jordan Bianucci holding it down for us back in
our Salt Lake City studios. I'm out here in orm
Utah Sleepy Ridge Golf Course. Getting you through the morning.
I'm getting through your morning commute here as well. Do
you want to remind you coming up Friday night, we've
got high school football on the fan. You're home for
high school football across the state of Utah as we
bring you Provo High hosting Green Canyon out of Cash Valley.
(17:05):
They're going to be down in Provo Friday night. Lights
back in action. Jordan, you excited? You want to give
us the preview of Provo High School. I know you've
been studying.
Speaker 3 (17:13):
Yeah, I've been.
Speaker 5 (17:14):
Really, I've been on it so far. Their colors are
green and they're the bulldogs. I believe, no Provo. Look,
I have not begun my preparation for that that starts today.
Speaker 4 (17:27):
See I did that on purpose, purposefully through Jordan under
the bus, because I know he's a busy man, and
there was no chance that he had started looking into
the Provo football team just yet.
Speaker 5 (17:36):
No, that'll be this afternoon and tomorrow, and then what
people don't understand is I'm just hoping we have an
updated roster for these teams. Okay, yes, because I.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
Will know who the quarterback is.
Speaker 5 (17:48):
Yeah, because I you know, I put time, I put
them on my big board, I highlight stuff, I make notes,
and then we'll get a comment you know online that's like, hey,
number twelve's this guy. He's not that guy. They changed
his number ten minutes before the game. Like, yeah, it's fantastic.
Speaker 4 (18:04):
That actually did happen to us. Last year, Tip and
Ogus their quarterback is away jersey. Someone stole the away
jersey that was that dark or the light white color,
and so he was wearing a different away jersey than
what we were used to him wearing.
Speaker 3 (18:20):
And so we're like, who is this kid? Is this
the starting quarterback? Are you guys going to the backup?
Speaker 4 (18:23):
They're like, no, he just had to change his jersey
because the kid that played here last year took that
jersey with him, just didn't didn't bring it back after
equipment check was.
Speaker 3 (18:33):
Checked back in. So sometimes that'll happen. Sometimes that'll happen.
Speaker 4 (18:37):
But Provo and Green Canyon this Friday, it'll be on
the radio right here on one, O, three, nine and
ninety three ESPN the Fan. We'll also bring you some
NFL action on Saturday, the Home of the Rams, So
you will listen to the Rams preseason game number two,
and that will be on Saturday, right here on one
of three, nine and ninety three ESPN the Fan. You're
(18:58):
home for La Rams football in the state of Utah.
All right, Jordan, let's jump into it. Some more things
that we have to talk about this morning, Major League Baseball.
We talked a little bit about it yesterday. One thing
that I thought was fun about Major League Baseball was
that the Mets last night hit so many home runs
that they ran out of fireworks in the ballpark. And
(19:20):
that was against Yes, you got it right, the Atlanta Brads,
where they won thirteen to five and hit six home
runs and could no longer shoot off fireworks because they
didn't think they could hit that many home runs. Oh yeah,
and Pete Alonzo became pretty much solidified himself.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
In the history and the Hall of Fame of the
New York.
Speaker 4 (19:39):
Mets war with I believe correct me if I'm wrong here,
because I don't have it right in front of me,
became the person that hit the most home runs in
franchise history.
Speaker 5 (19:48):
Yeah wrong, No, No, that's right. He passed Darryl Strawberry,
which I was honestly, I was kind of shocked at
I had not been following that story, and I guess
it shouldn't surprise me, but it still did. I was like, man,
Pete a. Lonzo said that many home runs with the
Mets they ran out of fireworks. I didn't know that.
That's that's hilarious.
Speaker 3 (20:10):
Yeah, they they posted, well it wasn't that.
Speaker 4 (20:12):
There's Sny who does the games posted a picture of
the scoreboard where they had put up an apology on
the score like, if you're the Braves, this.
Speaker 3 (20:22):
Is just embarrassing for you. You know.
Speaker 4 (20:24):
They put up an apology on the scoreboards to their fans. Sorry,
you know, due to the amount of home runs that
have been hit, we've ran out of fireworks and can
no longer shoot them off. We apologize for the inconvenience.
That's what they put up on the scoreboard.
Speaker 5 (20:39):
That's a joke, right, they're kidding. That's gotta be a
They're like.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
Do you think they were trolling with the Braves?
Speaker 5 (20:46):
I think they were. There's no way. That's pretty funny though.
Either way, that's good stuff.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
Tell you exactly what it said.
Speaker 5 (20:53):
Well, I'll tell you what the Mets needed that win.
They'd lost seven in a row and Phillies. I don't
know if Philly's pulling away, but jeez, felt like it.
The Mets have just tanked this second half, and they're
lucky that they played so well in the during the
first half, because holy cow, it's not going well for
the Mats.
Speaker 4 (21:13):
Look, John Boy even tweeted it out. I trust John Boy,
all right, I trust John Boy. It's a picture of
City Field's screen that says, due to too many Mets
home runs, we've unfortunately run out of fireworks for the night.
We apologize for the inconvenience, and then says no more pyro.
Speaker 5 (21:35):
Man never in. Look, I didn't, let's be honest, four
or five years ago, if you would have said the
Mets are gonna run out run out of fireworks because
they're hitting too many home runs, you weren't buying it.
And then Hey Cohen comes around, they start signing some dudes.
They're they're crushing balls. That's that is, that's good stuff.
(21:58):
I think they made it up. I'm gonna be honest.
I think it's real.
Speaker 4 (22:02):
So do you think they actually put that up in
the stadium or do you think someone put up created
that picture with AI and you think that I'm getting
duped here.
Speaker 5 (22:09):
No, no, no, I think they put it up in the
stadium as a I don't think they literally ran out
of fireworks, that's what I'm saying. I think they put
it up. It's a funny thing to put up. But
I don't know that they're, yeah.
Speaker 4 (22:20):
Just simply to troll the Braves, because the Braves have
been a little, i'll be honest, a little cocky, maybe
a little cocky the last couple of years, and they've
really looked down on Philadelphia and New York fans right
there in that NL East and maybe you know, this
is the time to get their jabs back in the
New York Mets with the Braves being down this year.
Speaker 5 (22:41):
Yeah, well, the Braves and the Mets have always hated
each other. I mean, going back to John Rocker in
the nineties. Yeah, in the nineties. That's a great rivalry.
But yeah, this is the year to do it because
I don't see I mean, I see the Braves bouncing
back next year. It's I don't see the Braves in
(23:02):
the cellar again. But who knows, I don't know. Do
Mets fans hat Braves? The Braves more are the Phillies.
I would think the Phillies just because it's Philadelphia, but
but they've had more division battles. I would think with
the Braves, the Braves has been better historically than the Phillies.
Speaker 3 (23:23):
I would agree, I think so.
Speaker 4 (23:27):
I think those three teams though in that division, are
the three teams they hate each other the most.
Speaker 3 (23:32):
I would say, I don't think there's.
Speaker 4 (23:35):
You know, I wouldn't worry too much about the Miami
Marlins in any of that, but those three teams definitely
hate each other the most. If we're gonna compare and contrast,
New York five games out of first place behind Philadelphia,
but they are sitting tight in the wild card race,
two games ahead of the Cincinnati Reds. Do you think
the Mets gonna run this one out and make the playoffs?
Speaker 5 (23:59):
I don't. I don't know. That's a good question. I
think they will think I think they'll hold on. But
if you look like the past fifteen day, let's go
last two weeks, what's the Mets er the last two weeks?
Because it's not good. It's like and I'm not I'm
talking two weeks, not like the last month, Like just
(24:20):
in the last two weeks, how well have they pitched,
and they are towards the BA where they at exactly
I'm pulling it up right now in life, in real time. Okay,
so they are in I don't even know where the
hell they are. Okay, they haven't even pitched poorly. They're
in the top ten in er. The past two weeks,
(24:43):
they've lost seven so they're just not scoring a lot
of runs until last night because they're pitching.
Speaker 4 (24:48):
Well, yeah, it would be Uh, look when you take
a look at what the Mets have done and where
they're at right now, plus thirty eight in the run differential,
they've scored five hundred and twenty six runs, but they've
given up four hundred and eighty eight. So I think
that's more. Where they need the help is on the
(25:10):
pitching side. Try and keep those runs down so that
they can win some more ball games and they'll be
just fine.
Speaker 5 (25:16):
And they needed bullpen help. They needed help in the bullpen,
and so they went and got some at the break.
So that was a good move. But but yeah, the thing,
I'm not worried about the Mets bats so much, even
though Wan Soto hasn't been great this year. You look
at the lineup and you feel pretty good about the lineup.
But you're Red. Yeah, come as far as getting through
(25:39):
August and September. For me, it's the bullpen that you're
gonna have to navigate. So but the Red I don't know.
I don't know what to make of the Reds either,
because the Reds are all over the place. They've they've
played pretty good ball, but they could drop off tomorrow
and you never hear about the Reds again. So they're
not gonna The Mets will not come back in that,
(26:00):
I'll say that. I don't think. I think the Phillies
are going to take that. But do they make the
playoffs New York? Yeah, I think they hang on in
the wild card. I'll tell you who is reeling right now?
Are the Cubs the Cubs. And it's not even so
much that the Cubs are playing terribly. I mean, they're
not playing well at all, But it's that combined with
the Brewers can't lose. And I was watching that Cubs
(26:23):
Blue Jays game last night. In consecutive innings, the Cubs
can't score, and each hitter ends in throw in their bat,
throw in their helmet like they're frustrated. You can just
tell they're just they are frustrated the Cubs. That's they're
lucky they've built up such a huge lead in that
wild card spot because they that's things are not going
(26:45):
well for the Cubs right now.
Speaker 4 (26:47):
One other thing, I don't know if you brought this up,
but the Mets are just two and eight in their
last ten. So that's something to look after that big
game last night that made headlines, thirteen to five win
over Atlanta, they're just two I know, their last ten.
Speaker 5 (27:02):
Telling you man, that's their first I'm pretty sure they
had lost seven in a row up to that point.
Speaker 4 (27:06):
Yeah, so it's got something to look out for. One
other thing I want to bring up. Mariners Astros both
have sixty seven wins fifty three losses, tied for the
top of the AL West. Have you paid much attention
to that race in the AL West with the Mariners
and the Astros.
Speaker 5 (27:21):
Yeah, I mean I have. I look good on the
good on the Mariners because every time the Astros take
a two or three game lead, I think we're conditioned
just to think, okay, well that's over. Not that the
Mariners will fold so much, but just the Astros, Okay,
they found their stride. They're good. But yeah, I would
take the Strows probably down the stretch. But I like
the Mariners bringing Suarez at at the deadline, and yeah,
(27:47):
they're playing good. They're playing really well. I don't it's
hard to bet on the Mariners because they do seem
to fade a bit every year. But I'll tell you this.
You know he's playing really well. Coming over back to
Houston is Carlos Carrea. That guy's crushing the ball since
he got traded from the Twins. So that's that is.
(28:08):
That's a very interesting division and a fun one to watch.
Speaker 3 (28:12):
Yeah, that one is. I'll be honest.
Speaker 4 (28:15):
For me, it is a little bit of surprise that
the Mariners are hanging in there, because what happens every
single year in the last month of the season. The
Mariners figure out how to just win what fifty eight
percent of their games are less right, they just choke
down the stretch, they end up not making the playoffs,
and they're they're always just a couple of games away
from doing it, but never can do it. So I
(28:37):
am a little bit surprised that the Mariners are where
they're at right now.
Speaker 3 (28:40):
I would not be surprised if they end up.
Speaker 4 (28:43):
Not making the playoffs at all, although even the wild
card spot. I mean you take a look, both of
those two teams atop the wildcard spots right now as
it stands three games ahead of the Cleveland Guardians, So
that right there, I mean you talk about that would
(29:03):
be quite catastrophic down the stretch if either one of
those teams ended up not making the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (29:07):
So I'd expect both of those two teams to be in.
Speaker 5 (29:09):
You would think, but you know, three games, it's August thirteenth.
Three games is not that not that high or not
that that many games. And the thing that I don't
have a ton of confidence in is the team that's
right below them, which is the Red Sox. That you're
a believer, Nah, not yet, like be I'll probably never
(29:30):
be a believer until they're actually in the playoffs. I
just it's the least consistent team I've ever seen. But
look the I mean the Mariners, they're red hot. They've
won eight in a row. So I just anything could happen.
But you're right, because you look, you look at the
teams that are chasing them. You go the Red Sox,
the Yankees, and then Cleveland. I might be more. I'm
(29:51):
more confident in Cleveland than I am in the Yankees
of the Red Sox right now. I mean, Cleveland's eight
and two in their last ten. The Red Sox. The
Yankees have finally won two in a row, beating the
Twins at home, but they've been playing horribly. Judges still
he can't play the field. He's still dhing with the
elbow issue. So if you're the Mariners yet, you feel
(30:13):
pretty good right there. But I would say mainly because
those two teams behind you, I don't have any I
don't have any confidence in right now.
Speaker 3 (30:22):
All right, that's a look at your Major League baseball.
Speaker 4 (30:26):
By the way, I don't want to I purposefully avoided
what happened to Paul Skeens last night?
Speaker 5 (30:34):
Is that crazy?
Speaker 3 (30:34):
I don't know if you want to talk about this. Oh,
I just didn't. I didn't. I didn't want to talk
about it.
Speaker 5 (30:39):
Well, we actually we have a ton of baseball because
we haven't even talked about the Potter's and the Dodgers yet,
who by the way, just they're tied atop the National
League West. Now, the thing about so Skeens gives up
four runs through four innings last night, and you're like, Okay,
whatever it was the he can't beat the Brewers. It's
the last time we faced him. He gave up four runs.
(31:02):
It's one of the that is a that is a
very weird thing. I don't know what they have on
Paul Skans.
Speaker 4 (31:07):
Here's the headline from ESPN on the game Brewers hammer
Paul Skans pirates as win streak reaches eleven.
Speaker 5 (31:17):
They crushed him. I heard he's going to retire.
Speaker 3 (31:19):
He's just like they set him into hiding.
Speaker 5 (31:22):
Yeah, he's scared, dude. I'll tell you what Milwaukee was rocking?
Did you I watched some of that game last night.
There're thirty eight thousand people. They're just losing their minds.
It was it was they are they are rolling right now.
And yeah, so that was fun to watch. But yes,
Skiing Skeens gave up four runs last night, and he
gave up four runs the last time he faced the Brewers.
(31:45):
This is a guy with like an era of a
of two. So it's just it's one of those bizarre things.
Speaker 4 (31:51):
Yeah, we definitely have a lot of baseball to talk
here this morning, because it's still some more things to
talk about. When it comes to a triple play, My
friend that happened with the Angels, and of course Otani
with the Dodgers.
Speaker 3 (32:04):
We'll talk a little bit about that later on.
Speaker 4 (32:06):
A lot more stuff to talk about throughout the rest
of today when it comes to Major League Baseball and more.
Right now, we will talk. We will take a break here,
we'll come back. NFL Blitz bring you the latest from
the National Football League coming up here in just a
little bit. Do you want to remind you we're live
down here at Sleepy Ridge Golf Course four the thirty
(32:27):
first Danuel which, by the way, it's pretty long, pretty
long time that this thing's been going UVU Athletics golf
tournament here. Of course, the fan is the proud home
of Utah Valley University Athletics. I'm hanging out here on
the patio, Jordan. The sun's just barely coming up. I
actually have a beautiful view. I have you ever been
to Sleepy Ridge Golf Course before?
Speaker 5 (32:46):
I never have.
Speaker 4 (32:49):
Sitting out here on the back patio. If you look
up the clubhouse, this thing is like a castle. It's
like a castle out here right next to Utah Lake.
Normally we're across the lake at Talents, but this year
they're like, no, let's do Sleepy Ridge. So we're at
Sleepy Ridge massive clubhouse. This thing is huge, Like, I
don't know why this thing is so big. They do
(33:09):
a lot of weddings and stuff here. If you look
up a picture of it, it's pretty it's pretty beautiful.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
I won't lie. You know.
Speaker 5 (33:14):
What's funny you mentioned we're talking about doing Provo football
on Friday. I'm pretty sure I passed this place when
I got lost on my way to Provo I last year. Yeah,
because I remember thinking, I was like, well, what is this?
It's like a castle thing and there are a bunch
of people there, and I, yeah, that's a I know
exactly what you're talking about. That's a nice little, nice
(33:36):
little spot.
Speaker 4 (33:37):
And a lot of people that don't know where the
new Provo High School is will be like what you
got lost in orum going to? Well, listen, the new
Provo High School is essentially out on top of Utah Lake,
just a little bit further south, literally right down Geneva
Road from where Sleepy Ridge is, So it makes sense
that you got lost and ended up here as well.
Speaker 5 (33:57):
I'm not from there, all right. Everything looks the freaking
everything looks the same it's all the same good.
Speaker 4 (34:04):
It's also funny that they decided to move Provo High
School from the middle of Provo right next to BYU
all the way out to the lake.
Speaker 1 (34:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (34:12):
Well, I mean, now BUYU what they're putting their medical
school right there.
Speaker 3 (34:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (34:17):
So that's I'll tell you this. That new Provo High
that the football field, it's nice. I like it.
Speaker 1 (34:23):
It was.
Speaker 5 (34:23):
That's a good spot for us.
Speaker 4 (34:25):
Yeah, the really nice booth high School. Football comes your
way Friday night. Friday Night Lights returns on the fan,
your home for Friday Night Lights across the state of
Utah one oh three, nine and ninety eight three ESPN

a new school up in Logan will be down at
Provo taking on the Provo Bulldogs and Kirk Chambers squad.
(34:47):
So we'll bring you all that action coming up Friday
night at seven pm. We'll take a break here. More
football coming your way next. The National Football League and
the latest from around the NFL will give you some
key training camp it's insights and as well as one
player that was holding out on his team that just
barely signed a contract this morning.
Speaker 3 (35:09):
We'll tell you who it was.
Speaker 4 (35:11):
That's next here on Bryson Bianucci one of three nine
and ninety eight three ESPN.
Speaker 1 (35:18):
Welcome back to Bryce and b and Nucci in the morning.
It's time for the NFL Blitz. On one O three
nine at ninety eight three ESPN. We fan.
Speaker 4 (35:30):
Welcome back in Bryson bian Ucci seven forty five on
the dot. You know what that means. It's time for
the NFL Blitz. We're going around the National Football League.
Always brought to you by our friends over at the Advocates.
If you were injured in an auto or motorcycle accident
that wasn't your fault, called eight oh one three five
five fifty five fifty. Once again, that's eight oh one
(35:50):
three five five fifty five fifty. Or go to Utahadvocates
dot com. You deserve an advocate, our proud sponsor of
the NFL Blitz. So let's jump into the National Football League.
We told you one player that was holding out slash
holding in, they call it a hold in. He was
at camp the whole time. He was complaining. Over the offseason.
(36:11):
Bill's fans were worried.
Speaker 3 (36:12):
Jordan.
Speaker 4 (36:12):
I don't know if you know the extent of this,
but way back in the spring, he'd actually taken the
Bills out of his social media profiles. Everybody in Buffalo
thought he was as good as gone. I'm talking about
James Cook, the running back. He just signed a four year,
forty eight million dollar extension after he held in at
Bill's training camp just barely.
Speaker 3 (36:33):
Oh.
Speaker 5 (36:33):
He took everybody off his social media.
Speaker 3 (36:35):
Oh yeah, deleted it all, scrubbed it everything.
Speaker 5 (36:37):
I'm shocked that he's back. That's everyone does that now,
and I'm just like, all right, what, okay, you unfollow it.
This is just so weird to me. Oh, like, what
is that? I don't know, it seems kind of stupid.
Speaker 4 (36:52):
I gotta play the game if you want to get paid.
That's what it's all about these days.
Speaker 5 (36:55):
That's what the GM and the owner are talking about there. Like, guy,
he's not fun, Jim refresh our followers. He's not following
us anymore. Oh no, I'm kind. I don't know if
I'm surprised that he signed. But this is good news
for the Bills. They I'm somebody to help Josh Allen
in the Backfield's always nice.
Speaker 4 (37:17):
The extension came a day after Cook returned to Bills
practice on Tuesday, following more than a week long hold in.
It resulted in the running back missing Buffalo's first preseason game.
Cook was in full uniform and fully participated throughout Tuesday session,
but he missed four practices during the hold in.
Speaker 3 (37:34):
He should be ready to go by year number one.
Speaker 4 (37:37):
By the way, paying the Bills, James cook new deal
continues to be an offseason that was busy for the Bills.
You want to hear everyone that they've paid this offseason.
Quarterback Josh Allen got paid six years, three hundred and
thirty million dollars. Gregory Russo on the defensive side four
years eighty million, a cornerback Christian Benford four years seventy
(37:59):
six million, wide receiver Khalil Shakir four years fifty three million.
Speaker 3 (38:05):
This list is extensive.
Speaker 4 (38:06):
Linebacker Terrell Bernard four years fifty million, and now James
Cook four years forty eight million. That's a lot of
money that the Bills are shelling out right now.
Speaker 5 (38:14):
I'm running out of I'm running out of Jachin's. We
only get like ten of those a day, so we
just used them.
Speaker 3 (38:20):
Got to pay for those.
Speaker 5 (38:20):
Yeah, that's not that's not free. Kids. Uh that they
the Bills are all in. I like it. I like
going after guys.
Speaker 1 (38:28):
You know.
Speaker 5 (38:29):
It's the Packers are notoriously they're not cheap, but they
won't sign big time free agents. So I like that
these aren't not that these are huge free agents signings,
but like, yeah, Bill's spending money. That's you. That's great.
This is the time. They know this is their window.
So next three years and then you're good luck. So
(38:51):
this is it.
Speaker 3 (38:52):
This is the window. You're exactly right. It's closing quick
for the Bills. They got to get something done in
the next couple, you know.
Speaker 5 (39:00):
So you know what the Bills are thinking. They're going.
When we were when we had Jim Kelly, we couldn't
win a Super Bowl. We went to four of them.
Now when we have Josh Allen, this is our super
Bowl window. There's like one quarterback in the AFC that's
better than Josh Allen and it's the Chiefs, And that's
right during our window.
Speaker 3 (39:18):
We have to go.
Speaker 5 (39:18):
Yet, I mean, they just they must feel like they
can't catch a break.
Speaker 4 (39:23):
There was a lot of franchises that thought the same
way about Tom Brady for quite some time and ended
up continually losing to Tom Brady. I think the Pittsburgh Steelers. Yeah,
you could put them up there. Yeah, let's shift over
to the Green Bay Packers show. We speaking of teams
that should have won more Super Bowls with Aaron Rodgers.
Jordan Love at surgery on Tuesday to repair our ligament
(39:44):
injury to his left thumb. With the Green Bay Packers,
expect the star quarterback to be ready for.
Speaker 3 (39:49):
Their season opener.
Speaker 4 (39:51):
That's interesting, and have surgery and be ready to rock
and roll on the left thumb for game number one.
Speaker 3 (39:57):
I guess it's a non throwing hand.
Speaker 5 (39:58):
It's a non throwing hand, I believe, So, okay, not
a lefty, is he No? That changes my opinion. Then
he'll be okay. I was gonna say that's bad. That's bad.
I'm like, what, you had surgery and he's expected to
be back that because that's just one of those injuries
that will gnaw you all year long. You'll hit it
on a dude's helmet and it'll just it'll flare up
(40:19):
weekly non non throwing hand. Yeah, it'll be fine. I'm
not too worried.
Speaker 4 (40:25):
So that was the latest on Jordan Love with his
non throwing hand and the Green Bay Packers. Speaking of
former Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said it didn't like his
new helmet. I don't know if you saw this, says
it looks like a damn spaceship.
Speaker 3 (40:39):
That's what he said.
Speaker 5 (40:42):
I look put him in a leather helmet. That's what
he wore his rookie year. Just let him. Let him
wear what he wants and let him get out there
and play some ball. I don't.
Speaker 3 (40:53):
Speaking of guys that played alongside Jim Kelly.
Speaker 5 (40:56):
No kidding, seriously, I'll tell you this, man, they're not.
I've been a whole lot of NFL offseason headlines. Good lord,
we're talking about Aaron Rodgers head helmet like there's nothing
going on in the NFL. Seriously, James Cook today, okay,
and now we've got Aaron Rodgers still doesn't like his helmet. Okay.
Speaker 4 (41:18):
That's what happens when nobody plays in the preseason. We've
already talked about Joe Burrow, Jabar Chase playing. Yeah, there
was not a lot of other dudes that actually ended
up playing in the in the first preseason game. And
that's going to stay that way because they don't want
to get these guys injured. We've already seen a couple
of gruesome injuries throughout the first few first week of
preseason football.
Speaker 5 (41:36):
How long until the NFL mandates those guardian caps to
be worn during games? You know what I'm talking about.
Speaker 3 (41:44):
I don't know that. That's probably a players union thing.
Speaker 5 (41:47):
I don't know that's a player safety thing. I don't
think they because because they're not, they don't have to
negotiate with the union every time they come up with
a new helmet, right, like the new safety guidelines not
to mention, and the union is just backstabbing their own
players anyway, So there is no players union anymore. By
the way, everyone got fired. Uh that's I don't know.
(42:10):
It's Uh, there's a I think sooner than later, because
they wear them all during practice, they have to wearing practice.
Speaker 3 (42:18):
Yeah, there's a couple dudes that wear during games too. Yeah,
a few guys.
Speaker 5 (42:24):
I don't like the look of them. They look they
look weird, and I don't like it. But but you know,
if it's if you can do anything to help guys
not you know, incur brain trauma, then I'm on board
with it.
Speaker 4 (42:39):
Yeah, no doubt about it. Uh, that is pretty much it.
I ain't gonna lie. There's there's you know, the the
John Gruden situation one in court in Nevada and the
Nevada Supreme Courts. That one's gonna move on to exploration
about his back and forth with the NFL on those
leaked emails and what happened there.
Speaker 3 (42:59):
So there was that.
Speaker 4 (43:00):
There's also Miles Garrett who got sided for driving one
hundred and a sixty mile per hour zone that made
the headlines as well a lot of dudes that love
to speed the play for the Cleveland Browns.
Speaker 5 (43:12):
Yeah, one hundred miles per hour in a sixty that see,
it sounds so much worse because that's basically he's going
one hundred miles per hour on the freeway, is what
it sounds like. Maybe not maybe more like a Bangiter situation.
Speaker 3 (43:26):
Yeah it was.
Speaker 4 (43:27):
It was on the Interstate in a Cleveland suburb early
Saturday morning.
Speaker 5 (43:33):
Like you said, don't get me wrong, that's stupid and dangerous.
Speaker 3 (43:36):
But also it was at two oh one am.
Speaker 5 (43:40):
Yeah, not great, although maybe that's the time to do it,
no one's on the road.
Speaker 3 (43:44):
Maybe, but I don't know.
Speaker 5 (43:47):
Like when you see the headline, you're like, it comes out.
It's like he was going sixty miles per hour in
a school zone. And then you look at the article
and you're like, oh, he was just going super fast
on the freeway. Shouldn't have done it. But it's not
as bad as I thought it was going to be.
Speaker 4 (44:00):
Right, that marks I believe the second, one second time
that a Cleveland Browns player this offseason has been cited
for excessive speeding. One of those would be Shador Sanders,
who had a great first preseason game.
Speaker 5 (44:16):
Well, I forgot he got Yeah, he got pulled over,
didn't he.
Speaker 4 (44:20):
I think it was the second time he had gotten
pulled over, because there was one that happened earlier in
the offseason before he got drafted, and then one right
after he got drafted.
Speaker 5 (44:29):
So if you were drafted in the NFL, what what
kind of car would you buy as soon as you
got paid?
Speaker 3 (44:35):
Oh? Man, Uh.
Speaker 4 (44:37):
There was a Utah Jazz player not too long ago
who had like, it's not a jeep, but it's it's
like a four axle truck where three of the axles
are in the back and one's in the front, and
it's it's extended. It's like an extended It looks like,
(44:57):
I don't know exactly what it was, but I would
get that bad boy, you know, just a snow crawler essentially.
Speaker 3 (45:04):
That's pretty cool.
Speaker 5 (45:04):
I'd buy a hot air balloon, That's what I'd do.
I'd just start hot air ballooning everywhere. Now, I'd get that,
or I'd get like a restored like VW Bus, you
know what I'm saying, like from like nineteen sixty nine,
because look, I'm not going to get in any trouble.
I'm not going to drive that too fast, but it's
pretty bad ass, to be honest.
Speaker 4 (45:24):
In the one season that I was at Utah Jazz
practices and games and kind of covering the Utah Jazz
for the station, I.
Speaker 3 (45:34):
Donovan Mitchell's car. I don't know what it was, but
it was pretty sweet.
Speaker 5 (45:37):
I won't lie the great.
Speaker 3 (45:40):
I think it was a Maserati.
Speaker 4 (45:42):
I think like a Masarati type of of deal.
Speaker 3 (45:47):
Had like orange.
Speaker 4 (45:50):
I'm way out of my talking comfort zone trying to explain.
Speaker 5 (45:55):
It was Mets. He was going Mets orange.
Speaker 4 (45:58):
