but you guys have had a good show thus far,
and thanks for having me. Appreciate it always hopping.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
On absolutely, Ronald, we bring you on to talk about
some BYU football. Let's dive right into it. Okay, the
segment before we listen to coach Kliney him talking about
the quarterback battle, the running back room, possibly some injuries,
they're moving some guys from the defensive side of the
offense side of the ball. Him talking about the leadership
that LJ. Martin that offensive line is trying to bring
into the room, about some possible experience that they need
(01:48):
a wide receiver. He covered a lot of things defense
side of the ball as well. Let me start with this. Obviously,
the conversation is mainly about the quarterback battle. Right now,
if you had to put any money on it. Who
was the leading horse to be the quarterback one for
b YU the very first week, not just next week
for BYU fall camp, but who could possibly be that
leading horse to lead the Cougars out of the tunnel
(02:11):
their very first week of the season.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
And let me just preface this, guys, it's been on
seven days of fall camp. Yeah, you know, another eight
days of fall camp. Excuse me. Today will be day nine.
Tomorrow will be day team. Just to give the fans
on opportunity here b A, you will have their first
scrimmage tomorrow, so that would tell us a lot more
about the battle. But I mean we got led in
last week, you know, because fall camp started. Bear Bachmeer
had a great Day one, you know, I believe it
(02:35):
was July thirty. First he looked great out of everybody, right,
and then day two, which was always first that we
were let in. It was really day three not so good.
You know, he stayed in the pocket like you told him.
But he threw a pick, you know, first day tracing
Borgette throwing a pick, you know, he threw it. Start
off with a touchdown and he threw interception of raider
de Mooney and mckabb to take check down throws at
Day one and then day two had some overthrows. And
(02:57):
that's why it's when each quarterback has had a different day,
like Trayson had a great day last Friday and then
McKay had good days this week, you know. And from
everything that I know and everything that I've heard, if
I had to put my finger on it, it's still
McKay Hill's job to lose. Man. It's a guy that
knows the system. I think the best that has been
able to play a little bit longer in the system
than everybody being there. Him and Tracing. I think there
(03:19):
are the two candidates leading Bear Bachmeers behind. He's just
a freshman. There's nothing against Bear. Bear can definitely tell
you can see that he is light years ahead of
any freshman and throws. He made a couple of throws
that first week where you're like, yeah, freshman shouldn't be
able to make that throw, but they did. But he
did though, right, because that speaks to the four star
talent in which he is. But there's levels to this,
(03:41):
you know. Like I said earlier this week, he should
have gotten rid of the football. I get the guys
ran you know, the wrong route and at a certain point,
but you got to dirt the ball or you got
to get rid of it. You can't hold onto it
because an actual game there will be a sack, right
and you don't want to take that. You want the
quarterback that's going to eliminate negative plays, the guy that's
going to create the less amount of turnovers, and that's
(04:02):
going to move the sticks. And I got to me,
is McHale's dead. He throws one of the best d
balls up, saying he can truly sling it. He's truly dynamic.
A great deal with their quarterback when the pocket breaks
down and when he needs to six ten players with
his legs. He's really hard to contain for when you
think of football and college and at the highest level
of the spy McKay hills said, I think is the
best quarterback on BOE's roster that makes you adjust your
(04:25):
defense and spy. If you don't do that, he'll just
run up the middle of you. He's that dynamic of
a runner where he can extend plays like that. I'm
not going to say Patrick mahomes as you guys know
how I feel about that, but we see guys like
that of like, Okay, if they don't like what they see,
they'll go move and they'll go run, you know, for
first down. So he puts, in my opinion, the most
pressure and executes Aaron Roderick's offense the best the way
(04:47):
that he wanted to be executed. So when you discuss
those things, I think McKay Hill's sad is the favorite.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
All right, all right, let's talk about another offensive player,
l J Martin. Obviously, last season he had hurt, he
was injured, he was hiding it from he didn't want
to talk to the media. He kind of wanted to
show himself away. This season, he's healthy, he's talking, he's
trying to be a leader on the offense side of
the ball. We heard Colonne talk about it earlier in the show,
that he's trying to take those steps to be the
veteran he didn't talk his first couple of years. Is
(05:15):
this the season where LJ. Martin finally has everything go
right for him and reset one thousand yards as a
running back?
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Now, just want to, you know, give people a little
bit more. I know LJF talked to LJ you know,
in interviews on the record, off the record. I mean
those guy's just a quiet dude. He's just a young guy.
I mean, it takes kids times to adjust, right, It's
just all about business, you know, And he's his personality
has opened up more. Colooney said that he was being
a little bit tongue in cheek. He was joking. I'm like, oh, yeah,
(05:42):
he's talking. But no, like he's truly become a leader
on this offense. He's become way more vocal. Sometimes it
takes a guy to come into his own shell, you know.
You see guys do this around that junior year. It's
not that LJ necessarily didn't want to talk. It's not
that he was hiding his injury. He was. I think
when certain you know, im mediate perspectives are were pushing
a certain thing. Like I remember, you know that there
(06:03):
were reports about all he's injury, he's going to be
out for four games, and he played the first game
as a player. Guys like these guys have emotions. These
guys are human beings too. When they see that stuff
that irritates them, right, and like I won't lie, like
I played college rugby. If there were reports that weren't true,
that I wasn't going to play four games you know,
and then I rolled out there game one, in game two,
I'd be upset too. Now, granted, he got hurt, you know,
(06:24):
in the XMU game in that game three, and wasn't
able to you know, go forward in the next week's
because he got rolled up on. No one likes you know,
getting rolled ankles or hyakls brains from what it looked
like to me at least, But yeah, I mean, this
is a guy that had would have had a thousand
yards flast year in my opinion, would have been florting
with it if he doesn't get nicked up right, because
he wasn't able to play and you know, you know,
(06:46):
two or three games last season, the same thing happened
year one. But when he's fully healthy, he's a thousand
yard back in no doubt. He's too dynamic, he's cut.
He looks extremely cut. From looking at him, he looks faster.
He had a running player fall camp on season where
he ran through the middle past everybody and nobody touched
him and it was a sixty yard touchdown. Like you're
gonna see a lot of that this season. Aaron Rodgers
has been very vocal about that, Hey, you know, we
(07:08):
need to reuse him a lot, like he doesn't want
to put a number on how many touches. But they're
gonna run their offense to B B what you football
expected to be like the days of both. They're gonna
run the dawn football and they're gonna throw to the
tight ends. That's exactly what they're gonna do. They're gonna
have a lot of playoftion and number four in the
backfield is going to be a big part of it.
And I don't know, I think it's a perfect season
for LJ because the Big twelve doesn't have a lot
(07:30):
of good running backs. Everybody left last year in the draft,
no one's really looking at that position. LG has a
serious chance to make at the end of the season.
In my opinion, you know the all Big twelve, you
know team as a running back and put his name
in national conversations and on the NFL draft board. If
LJ gets a thousand yard seasons, he will be on
watch to get drafted at the next level, no doubt.
(07:52):
I think that's the next running back that will be
drafted in the next year's draft or the draft after
from BYU. He has to prove it and stay healthy,
but when he's healthy, he's a problem.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
Meet some potato style offense. You and I both know that.
I'm a Notre Dame fan. I know that type of style.
Man throw the tight end, run the ball. That's one
hundred percent something that BYU wants to work. All right, Ronald,
I want to hit you with a two part question.
BYU's defense and special teams play a big role in
last season on why BYU was a ten win team
and had that really good Bowl win over Colorado. This season,
(08:25):
can BYU as their season gets going, as their offense
tries to get on the same page, does BYU need
to rely on their defense and special teams to win
games early or to just keep them in games as
they try to figure out all this offensive stuff before
the mid part of the season.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
That's a good question, you know. When I when I
hear that, I think the biggest thing what you want
to do is it's definitely going to be a meat
at potatoes offense. I think for sure. I think the
biggest thing you want to build is chemistry. Whoever this
quarterback is in this situation. You want there to be chemistry.
You want you want to rely on the basics. You
want your defense because they got a lot of like
(09:02):
get in talent. Let's take the defensive line for instance,
right hean the ton of Vosa is going to be
in the middle of Justin Kirkling. They know, they said,
it's a little nicked up injured. You necessarily don't need
him back from no conference. You like him to play
just to get reps. But if you're BYU, you're trying to,
you know, get everybody up to speed. You're trying to
get everybody confident, like the outside interrum right Hunter Kleck
(09:22):
who was originally committed to Utah. And obviously guys when
people come back from their mission, I think they have
to resign their NLI. But it's just you always want
to make sure that the young guys like that Tilly E.
Commas guys haven't played or getting a chance to feel
confident getting reps because football is a game of attrition.
(09:43):
So I think at the end of the day, you
want to make sure. As Kalani mentioned something that pointed
out to me, Kyle Whitningham said this years ago on
a clip and I can't remember, and it was very impactful.
He said, Yeah, we had twenty two guys that can play,
and the problem was once the team got injured, we
didn't have a full team that could play. We didn't
have three and four in depth. And that's why they
end up winning the Pactoe Championship and did what they did.
(10:03):
And while Kyle Whittingham is you know, we'll go down,
it's the greatest coach in Utah football history is because
he built up a program where it wasn't just one,
two and three guys, it was four and five. It
was walk ons, Like I mean, do you remember the
walk on guy that came what is it? I can't remember.
Zach might have to help me with It's not Tyson Shelley,
but but some kid came in and just wrecked BYU
(10:26):
and it went up there with Zach Wilson, the kid
that was on the practice team, right. But that's what
Kyle Whittingham's program did, and that's what Kline number trying
to get to. They're trying to get to where these
young guys, these talented guys are up to speed and
can play. Because if someone goes down, or if guys
get injured, and it's the twenty twenty three season all
over again, and you're lily playing three walk Ons against
Texas on the defensive line and you can't give pressure
(10:48):
to the quarterback or the quarterback is young and he
makes mistakes and turnovers and then you can't get points
off of that. That becomes a problem. Right, That is
what you don't want to happen. You want to have
with this d fencing. This offense top to bottom, one
through six is ready to go.
Speaker 4 (11:04):
I think you're talking about Jason Shelley, aren't you.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
Yeah, right, yep, the comeback win. That was a crazy
game to watch an experience.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
Oh yeah, it was all right. Let me ask you this, Ronald.
Obviously b YU ranked twenty three in the coaches polls.
That's obviously coming off of what they did last season.
The ball went over Colorado, their ten wins, they were
right there. They were almost there for a big twelve championship.
They almost competed for it last season. Is that in
respect to what they did last season? And will they
(11:33):
still be in the top twenty five when season comes in?
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Yeah? I mean when you look at the coaches poll
around the league, and I know it's the coaches. Both
the coaches have respect for Kawana Kutaki and Byu and
the big thing a part of it. And this is
no disrespect, you know to the offensive quarterback and their
pieces that they respect. I believe they respect LJ. Martin.
I think they see Andrew Gentry and they see what
they're able to do in that regard and will and
right as leaders and guys that have proven themselves I
(12:00):
think as their job. That's gonna make a lot of
noise to this year, just to let people know. They
look at Chase Roberts as the top ten receiver in
the country, not in the big twelve in the country. Yeah,
I said, that's right. If you don't like it, bite
me with it. But I'm serious. They see that. They
look and they see what this program has done. They
see that the guys that are going to be playing
in the NFL preseason games that are going to get contract.
(12:21):
They respect that defense and yes it's the leader they respect,
adding Hanna Sonavasa. They like the guys that they have
on that defense. They have a lot of future NFL
talent on that On that defense, they have two linebackers,
they have one defensive tackle, and they got future you know, cornerbacks.
They have future safeties, guys that have an opportunity to
really submit themselves in and to be able to get
(12:43):
drafted and play at the next level. So their top
twenty five team, no doubt, I believe when eight people
will come. I'm not saying they're going to be top fifteen.
I don't want fans to take that and think that
I'm trying to be a snake oil salesman. What I
am going to say is, I think because you lose
Jake res Lap, there is a dip. Definitely, no doubt,
like knowlarge yet, but I think the dip is not where. Okay,
they're out of the top twenty five, but I think
(13:04):
this team is going to be somewhere between twenty to
twenty five, as they should be. And I think if
you're by you take that you have a trip on
your shoulder, and you show and you go shock the
world and prove them. To answer your second question, I
don't have him in the big twelve toidle game. I
just think losing a quarterback like Jake Retz laugh that
late and guys who have not played a snap, I
don't know if you can lean on everything like the
(13:25):
ball bounce Bou's way last year fantastically. I don't know
if you get that kickoff a turn against Kiling Marin
in the Utah game. Like guys that they don't get that,
they don't win that game, right, And he's gone, He's
not there, He's at Miami, so you don't have that.
I could be wrong. Tiger Bachmeyer could show you he
could do that, but I need to see it with
my own eyes. I don't need to see it at Stanford.
I need to see him do that, and then I
can be declarative in that. I just I'm not declaredtive
(13:48):
in that data. I've seen Kiling Mary and I saw
proven you didn't. Darius Aster didn't get his waiver. It's
the toughest question marks. Who would be wide receiver four, five,
and six. I think you know who the one, two
and three are already. I have an idea who I
think the four, five and six should be backing up Chase,
Jojo and Parker. But it's just there's a lot of
question mark and I'm not a guy that believes in hypotheticals.
(14:08):
I've never been that. I believe in proven of what
I've seen with my own two eyes, and to me,
that is the defense you will have to lead on
them at times, but I think there are moments where
the offense is going to need to step up and
it's just going to be tough again. Our mind people,
I've been on the record. I think they're going to
their going to that Utah game sick and I believe
they're shock in the world. But then it gets tough
(14:29):
to play Utah who was out for blood. Kyle Whittingham
is looking this is a Jaws movie if you're BYU
and you're the main course, and Kyle Whittingham wants to
inflict pain. Jason Beckham that wants every Utah fan wants
to punish you. They want to see you suffer October eighteenth,
whether it's very personal to them or from a competitive
(14:51):
standpoint of the Ribby and college football, that game is crazy.
Then you got to go to Ames, Iowa and play
a good coaching Matt Campbell and Rock Obeck who is back.
That is a tough place to play in a good program.
Right as you thought they wouldn't know going on the
road that came down to the wire. Then you got
to buy and then you got to go to play
Texas Tech and TCU is a sleeper and Josh Hoover
is out here, you know, dressing up, you know and
(15:13):
having fun like you got. That's a tough stretch. Like,
let's be realistic, Like I don't think it will happen,
but you could lose four games in a row, Like
if we're being honest, like that's on the table. I'm
not saying that that will happen, but that's a possibility.
You know, you could lose you know, East Carolina, like
you could lose Colorado. It's the Big twelve for crowd allowed.
(15:34):
Anything's possible any given week. Nothing's off the table. So
I just think it's tough to say, yeah, title game,
it's tough to bet against Arizona State. Kenny dillinghamm and
them are proven that they're the real deal. I like
Sawyer Robinson and bad Baylor. I like what I see
at Texas Tech. I just I got VYU in the
top six. I got them top six, top seven. I
just don't know if I can put him as their
(15:55):
top two or three. If they prove me wrong, I'll
be the first one. You can play the clip like
joining being newch she does, I'll limit that I'm wrong,
But I don't know if I have them in the
title game. Going against Arizona State or Baylor, and that's
not how I see it happening. I think they go
eight and four if you had to ask me to pick,
and I still think aid and four going to a
bowl game, going to that Top Target Bowl in Orlando,
(16:18):
Zach knows happened about that is still a good season.
That's what I have happening. I could be way wrong,
but that's my way too early prediction. Ron.
Speaker 4 (16:25):
We'll get you out on this. You mentioned b Why
you not making it to the Big Twelve Championship this year?
What is your prediction for the Big twelve Championship and
who's coming off on top? Because we talked about this
yesterday a little bit off there, but we didn't didn't
really touch about it at all on air.
Speaker 2 (16:41):
But who you got, I'm gonna run it back, you know,
I think until you to throw on the champs, the
champs with the champs. So and here's the thing, guys,
I didn't like how the Arizona State BA game ended.
I don't like it from a fan perspective or from
me to perspective. I thought it was horribly done. I
didn't like it. I didn't like everybody's actually that involved
all of it was terrible and that we're right. I
felt like, you know, everybody could have handled that situation. Officials,
(17:03):
you know, players, fans, I think everybody, coaching staff. I
think that we have to do a better job in
college football of those type of situations. I'm not talking
about how people are feeling in the reaction of talking
about how that was handled. In those things, stuff needed
to go better. Anyway, that's a different run for a
different day. With all that being said, the champs to
the champs Arizona State, not picking against them until somebody
(17:25):
throws them. And I know that there's been question marks
between Okay, well you know Utah's in there. Let's tell
them to have a bounce back season. I just don't
think Baylor and David Randa are going to be left
on when you roll off four or five or six
wins in a row. In my opinion how I view it,
I looked at that and say, that's the problem. That
(17:46):
quarterback who's six', six who can sling the, football who
can Run like, reminder, Guys Hilia, robinson if he'd had
another quarter to, play ba you belly probably loses that
game Against. Taylor the way he was coming. BACK i got.
NERVOUS i got nervous as a, fan as a media
members said they might lose this. Game, man he looked so.
Great so if you had to have me, PICK i
(18:07):
think that momentum that they have is. POSITIVE i think
he carries over to the. SEASON i Think Dave randa
reminds people why he's changed a lot of. Stuff he
is not just all about football and. BUSINESS i think
Your big twelve title game is going to Be Arizona State,
baylor IF i had to, PICK i think that's what
it is In. ARLINGTON i Think Texas tech is right behind.
IT i think they are sitting on a tie break
(18:29):
and they lose one of those games that that doesn't
get them. In but if you're asking me to pick right,
Now i'm gonna Go Arizona State baylor in The big
twelve title, game and let's see who wins that title.
GAME i won't pick a.
Speaker 3 (18:39):
Winner that's a good, one right. There i'll give you
that one. Wrong let's get you out on this last
fun one.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
Here.
Speaker 3 (18:43):
Okay obviously B yu had their photo day yesterday And.
Wednesday who had the best, Smile who had the best
photo of? All the guys that signed up to do that,
yesterday and it would b yu who had the best?
Photo come, on tell.
Speaker 2 (18:59):
Us, uh this is pretty, tough LIKE i, MEAN i
mean it's really tough to, say because you could go their,
brothers you know that like did certain things, right like
their brothers that took pictures together IN vi, opinion you,
know Like chase roberts And Preston rex, did like the
prayer hand emoji and. Stuff you got the defensive guys
(19:20):
like you had the Town Mapea cousins And Jonathan. Cabea you,
know you Had canonton Of Boston e From, ancada and
you had Uh Vill. Puha it's tough to. SAY i
really don't know who had the best, one but everybody
wasn't joining. THEM i don't think there was a specific
person they really had a. Photo BUT i, mean if
you're asking me based on toughest, photo you, Know Boss,
(19:41):
MOVES i probably would have to Go Jonathan kabeya And
nuci And John, towpa like those guys and the way
they they were standing In and if you asked me
to rank, second Probably Chase Robertson Preston rex doing the
prayer hand, emoji you, know and Then i'd probably go
to back my boys is Third bear got a, haircut
which is a, surprising you, know and they were both.
Smiling so if you asked me to rank, it that's
(20:02):
how the rank. It but everybody was pretty engaged and
everybody was just enjoying. Them so photos there is a
good opportunity to just get some laughs and get, goals
update your. Bios so that's kind of the funny. One
