Welcome to the show. Hi,you don doing pretty good. I
see that you're on Bucks Game Dayright now, so your career is going
in an upward trajectory. I understandyou got your start with a Bucks Report
as well. Why don't you talkto us a little bit about that?
Yeah, so start with Buck Support. No training. Didn't go to school

(02:04):
for this at all. I justjumped on one of the shows that you
guys had on here as a caller. As a guest, I guess did
enough had a good enough good takesthat I was asked to come on the
show as as a featured guest, which led to a writing job, which
led to my own podcast, whichled to me credentialed by the NFL the
Buccaneers. It led to another opportunityto Peter Report, where I was with
for a little over two years, and then jumped to Sports Illustrated Bucks Game

(02:28):
Day for the start of this season, been covering the Bucks down for four
years. Excited started my own podcastthis season called Pirate Parlay or the Sick
Podcast Network, and I had somegreat guests on so far. Dave canallysy
iad Abby Christian Izzian was my latestguest on there, and also Joe try
and shrink. So go check thatout at the podcast network wherever you listen

(02:51):
to podcasts and on YouTube. Butyeah, man, just living the dream
here. Literally, Well, congratulationsto your career. It's definitely taking an
upward traject. I wish I couldsay the same thing for the Box.
I don't want to get ahead ofmyself and say, you know that this
team is tanking, but they arecoming off quite a horrible loss to the
lines. I would say one ofthe worst called games by Dave Canalis.

(03:12):
I would say one of the worstgames by Baker Mayfield. I guess I'm
not saying anything too novel there. One of the kind of the common sentiment
out there is that they are tryingto rely too much on the run game,
and that ultimately Rashad White isn't asadvertised. He only had one one
hundred yard game and that was lastseason overseas. What is the issue with

(03:32):
the Bucks run game and what isyour assessment there? Thanks a little bit
of ard thing. I think it'sblocking up front in the middle. I
think they're having a difficult time sustainingblocks and climbing to the next level in
order to spring those big runs.Open. That's why I was seeing a
lot of two three yard games andnot those big plays because the linemen can't

(03:53):
get off the blocks and can't passtheir blocks off successfully to climb up to
that linebacker level, the clot toclimb up to that you know, second
level to allow those bigger runs.I think it's tight. Ends are having
a very tough time blocking. Youknow, Todd Bowles said different today,
but if you watch the tape, kaya And is having a very difficult time

(04:13):
as a run blocker. At onepoint he he literally created a domino effect
where he blocked the guy in theAutrican who ended up going into Filer and
going to Hainesy mock and it justdestroyed the whole play. And I think
the onus too is on Rashad White, and you know, Keishan Von should
be playing in my opinion, butRashad White hasn't. As you mentioned,

(04:33):
Ben as advertised, Uh, there'sbeen a lot of hesitation, There's been
some dancing going on and you know, lack of vision, uh to hit
the whole the correct hole when thereis an opening. And then play calling
too, there's a certain you know, responsibility falls on Dave Canals it's it's
not one or the other thing,it's all things right now. This is

(04:56):
a difficult system to learn too. That's why we're seeing them kind of go
back to some of the duo andgap stuff that they're used to the last
couple of years because they're still familiarwith it. You know. On my
podcast, Canal said, you know, this was a difficult offensive system to
install for in Seattle as well, and it took them about a half season
for them to really kind of understandit. The lineman all fit it very

(05:17):
well. Rashad White fits it verywell. It's just not coming together for
whatever reason, and you have tothink that it's going to get there eventually,
but it, you know, it'sjust gonna take some time and some
patience. They want to be balancedthis year, but some at some point
you're gonna have to go back towhat's working, and that's been the passes
of late compared to the running game, and even then there's been some issues

(05:41):
as well. So I think they'llget it smoothed out, straightened out.
It's you know, football fans andBucks fans in general, especially after dealing
with what they've had to deal with, you know, last season, and
somewhat to an extent the year priorto with a run game, they aren't
the most patient, but I thinkthat's what it's gonna take. Get some
patients and the run game will turnitself around. Maybe not this week,

(06:03):
maybe not next week, but downthe line, I think, you know,
we'll start to see some tracks inthe running game. Don't expect them
to finish top ten, potentially eventop fifteen, but I do expect them
to turn around to be a littlebit more efficient there whereas they've been in
the first six weeks of the seasonseven weeks, six weeks, five games,
whatever you want to call it.So with that said being that,

(06:24):
there is, you know, anunderstanding that the run game isn't where it
needs to be and they don't reallyhave a really great option at running back.
Do they go outside of the organizationor do you think Rashad White,
do you think he finds his wayor you know, you said you're not
in love with Keishaan Vaughn. Whatare their options then at the running back
position. I think Sean Tucker shouldget some more opportunities then he's then he's

(06:46):
been getting. Obviously he had abad showing in that Eagles game, but
who didn't At the running back position. They've gone to Keishan Von the last
two games as the number two.Chase Edmond should be back fairly soon,
the next two weeks or so,so you'll have him back and he gives
you a little bit more of explosionand speed as a running back. So
they'll have him coming back and maybethey'll treat that as a new acquisition in

(07:08):
the running back game. But Bucksfans hoping for Terrick Henry or someone like
that, ILK like Jonathan Taylor, even though he signed. You know,
there's some theory people theorizing that he'ssigned to make a trade more feasible because
you don't have to pay him.You know what you're getting into him,
don't don't. I wouldn't. Iwouldn't even think about that. That's not

(07:29):
probably not gonna happen. And thenthere's some talks about maybe Dalvin Cook being
released, but to be honest,he hasn't looked like himself throughout the season
as well, or getting traded. One name. I would maybe keep an
eye on Rashad Penny if they haven'tused him, he's been banged up,
they haven't really used him. Swiftreally stepped up in that backfield, and
they have Kenneth gainwell as well.He might be expendable because they do have

(07:51):
Boston Scott to who's been there fora while. Maybe Rashad Penny, who's
on the I think it's a onepoint two million dollar contract something they can
absorb. They only have about threemillion dollars in cap space, so him
or you know, the dream isthat Denver loses another game or two and
decides to go on a full firesale before on Halloween and starts moving people

(08:13):
and and Javante Williams has becomes available, and at that point, you know,
I think you can get Javonte Williamsnow now we're talking a little bit
more here as a guy who Ithink can come in and, you know,
be a really solid contributor for thisBucks team. But you know,
those big names, you know,I wouldn't. I don't think they're in
that position. I don't think thatthey're their area. They don't have the

(08:33):
cap space to take on the DerrickHenry contract. And when you look at
what they're trying to do, they'retrying to assess for the future, Okay,
what do we need? What worksour cap books. Our cap is
coming pretty clean next year where they'regonna be they're gonta dole out some contracts,
don't get me wrong, but it'scoming out pretty clean where they're gonna
have some money and have some flexibility. Right now, over forty percent of

(08:56):
their roster is you know, theircap space is being paid the guy who
aren't even on the roster. So, you know, I think it's more
about assessing and I think the lookat Chase Emmans coming back as as an
acquisition towards that running back room morethan going out and get somebody. The
question now for me is why doesJason light have such a difficult time drafting

(09:16):
a good running back? It seemslike it's been a while since there's been
a great running back you know that'sbeen drafted within the organization. What is
your thoughts on that? You know, some gms just have their spots where
they can't hit. I mean,look at Bill Belichick. Can't hit a
wide receiver to save his life. You know, second round cornerbacks and safeties
for Belichick all pretty much. Ithink Kyle Duggar is the only one that's

(09:41):
ever panned out for him in thatpick I mean you talk about guys like
Razie Dowling, and you know, the list goes on and on. Some
gms just can't hit at certain positions, and it seems like running back is
the one. The thing though too, you know, Light hasn't really taken
a swing besides Ronald Jones in thesecond round and people forget, Yeah,
he was the leading rusher the SuperBowl season. You know he was Okay,

(10:03):
he's just in the doghouse or BruceArians a lot, and you know
he was inconsistent. But I mean, other than him, it's really been
third and third round picks and laterthat Light has tried to draft and make
work. So maybe if he takesanother shot in the second I mean they
wanted Jonathan Taylor. Jonathan Taylor couldhave been here over Antoine Winfield junior.
If he was available, that waslikely going to be the pick. You

(10:24):
know, either way you sliced it, they would end up with a phenomenal
player. But it's just kind ofthe way things broke down. And we'll
see, you know, if hetakes another crack out it this year,
how early, or maybe Shot Whiteturns it around and they feel like they've
got a good guy, or theygo on free agency with the market kind
of cooling at running back over thelast few years and get a bargain guy

(10:46):
there. So we'll have to seehow it all plays out. But you
know, some guys just he's he'sgreat at small school linemen, not good
at running backs. Yeah, Iguess we'll have to see how it all
shakes out. All right, Socoming up here after the break, we
will talk about the key to successfor the Bucks versus the Falcons. I
think it's Mike Evans and an engagedBaker Mayfield. We'll talk about that straight

(11:07):
ahead. All right, Welcome backin this edition of the Bucks Report.

(11:46):
So let's talk about the keys forsuccess. In my opinion for the Bucks,
it's having Mike Evans dialed in.It seems like he was a little
out of step the last game, and a thing, you know, kind
of the common thought out there ishe always plays better when he practices.
We know he had bye week andhe was dealing with some issues there.
How important for you is Mike Evansto have a really big game here against
the Falcons. I think he's keyto their success. Yeah, huge,

(12:09):
And I think when you look atthe matchups he's had with aj Terrell.
I think that's the spot where youcan exploit. And also Chris Godwin.
I think both of those guys.Jeff Okuda is starting to play like that
number three overall pick, but Godwinhas always had found success against the Falcons.
So you need both of those guysto step up because I still think
they are. Both of those receiversare better than both of those cornerbacks respectively.

(12:31):
Jesse Bates brings a lot to thatbackfield. He's a ballhawk. Three
interceptions on the season already. RichieGrant is really underrated safety. I think
he's really good out of Florida, you know Florida kids. So I think
that they it's gonna be a focalpoint. They're gonna I mean, they're
gonna struggle against their run, right, That's what they've done, you know,
all season, and the Falcons haverevamped their rushing game as well their

(12:56):
run stop game with the additions ofDaniel David any Mont and Klay Can as
well as you know, setting theedge of guy like Bud Dupree. They're
only allowing ninety nine yards per game, which is good for eleventh league.
However, even though we're saying thatthe passing game needs to be featured.
With Mike and Chris. The Falconsare surprisingly good in the back end.
They're only allowing one hundred and seventynine yards a game, which is good

(13:18):
for fourth in the league. They'refourth in total points. They're right in
the middle of the pack at twentypoints allowed. But you know, the
interceptions aren't there. The ratio isoff. You know, they're throwing more
picks than they are gaining. They'renot getting after the quarterback. They just
had a five sack game, whichput them at you know, twenty eighth

(13:39):
in the league with ten sacks inthe season, but they still have to
you know, they're still having difficultygetting out of the quarterback. If they
wasn't for that five sack game, they'd only have five sacks on the season.
So you know, the Bucks aregoing to be able to pass block
well enough. I think to giveBaker time to to let some deep things

(14:01):
develop. That's not what his offenseis. It's more efficiency verus explosive.
At this point, I know they'reworking towards that, and there were some
plays. Obviously everyone saw Mike Evanswide open on Baker's interception where it got
tipped, you little would probably wouldhave been an eighty yard touchdown if he
could have got that off to him. But you know, it's one of

(14:22):
these things where those deep shots, they're gonna try to take them and try
to find them. But again,if you're having Mike and Chris of the
first reads, and if you cangain seven yards on a play, even
if Mike is going down the fieldand that's a long developing route and he
becomes wide open, and you watchyour tape and you're like, Mike was

(14:43):
wide open on that play, whydo you go to Chris for seven yards?
Because it's an efficiency verus explosive, and that's going to frustrate fans who
are used to the no risk atno biscuit where you're chucking it, chucking
and praying. You know, withTom Brady and such, Baker's got the
arm strength to get the ball there. We saw with a couple of the
over throws. It's just gonna comedown to execution and time still. I

(15:03):
mean, I spoke with Dave Canalison my podcast and one of the things
he said is regarding the quarterback competition, a lot of guys asked them,
well, why wouldn't you just nameit starting now? To get them those
reps through all throughout training camp. And you know, he explained, you
had to see what you had inTrask, Right, what if Trask was
absolutely phenomenal, you know, andthen you have a four million dollar bakeup
in backup in Baker, you hadto see what you had in him.

(15:26):
Also, it strengthens that quarterback room. And if something does happen to Baker,
not all is lost. We sawthis happen two weeks ago. See
the Seahawks when Gino Smith went down, Drew Locke came in and you know,
guys, heads weren't down like thisgame is over true luxon. You
know, if Kyle Trastan's a stepin, he's got enough trust from these
guys that they can go. Butthe downside to that is half the reps

(15:50):
he missed in training camp until thatlast you know, last two weeks.
So they're still building those reps. They're still getting those reps back. It's
just happening in game, happening inpractice. So I think the consistency will
come. But if anyone's expecting youcan't compare apples to oranges, and that's
exactly what this offense compared to whatlast year's offense was, and everyone expecting

(16:14):
those deep plays is just gonna haveto really kind of realize that this is
an efficiency based offense, not anexplosive based offense. They'll take their shots
when they get them, you know, those efficient plays take priority over those
deep shots. It's going through everytime, but there'll still be some sprinkled
in and Mike Evans and Chris Gowanare certainly going to be the beneficiaries of
those most of the time, andthey'll need to be make sure they're dialed

(16:37):
in for this weekend because they're goingto be the beneficiaries of them. Sure,
a lot of throws by Baker, and I think it is a work
in progress. And there was atweet I saw here by Brianna Dick.
She says Dave Canalis on the offense, I don't want to sacrifice where we
are headed for right now, stressesthe challenge is if you oversimplify the offense,
it leads to defenses being able topick up things, says fly motions

(16:59):
and ships take time to master. So kind of of what you were talking
about off the top of the showis that you know, it wasn't It
didn't happen overnight in Seattle either forhim. So I think that it's going
to take a while for these thingsto flow more naturally. Is that your
assessment? Yeah? Absolutely, Imean these guys are still it's so difficult
to install a brand new system whenplayers are so used to this for the

(17:22):
last x amount of years. Youknow, it's different. It takes time.
You know, they did a veryslow install through camp. They didn't
just throw everything at them once atone time. They kind of went week
by week. Here we're installing this, we're installing this, we're installing this,
and they're still installing things throughout theseason. It's going to take some
time for It's a complicated but it'sa simple yet complicated offense. The premises

(17:48):
of this offense when they're out onthe field is to be able to do
multiple things from one look. Sothey'll have multiple plays you can run depending
on the look the defense is givingyou. They'll have multiple route trees depending
on what the cornerbacks are giving you, and it takes time for everyone to
master that. For the quarterback tolearn, there's guys' preferences you know,
all these things take time, andtime is one thing that football fans don't

(18:12):
have. We live in an AmazonPrime world where everybody wants things two days
or less with free shipping, andthere's impatient. The good news is,
even while we're taking the bucks, offenses taking this time to develop and to
build that chemistry, build that efficiency. There's three and two and the two

(18:32):
games that they lost. While theydon't look good in the final box score,
they were in both of those gamesup until halftime. Those teams were
just made better adjustments after halftime andpulled away and lack of execution. You
know, there was some bad playcalls, certainly, and you know Dave
is going to have those throughout theseason as he continues to learn as a

(18:56):
first time play caller. But completionhere, completion there. You know,
Devin White isn't dealing with a groininjury and he runs back that in that
pick six like he should have. We're talking about a different score, different
closer game, potentially different outcome. If Mike Evans reels in that ball,
if Bakers just you know it's TreyPalmer and one of those two deep shots,

(19:18):
We're talking about a different game.So it's not for lack of you
know, they got out classed. They just didn't execute. And the good
news is about execution is you canfix it with practice. It's not you
know, it's not the fact thatthey just are not a good football team.
They are a good football team, and they've got good playmakers everywhere,

(19:40):
from the guys who have been therethe vets, to the rookies who have
stepped up and then a phenomenal job. It's just time and execution. I
mean, that's any given Sunday, right, it's time and execution. So
far, the Bucks have beat theteams they probably should have beaten, and
have lost against two of the teamsthey probably should have lost against. So
you know, two of the creamof the crop of NFC, probably the
top two of the top four teamsin the NFC. They've got another test

(20:00):
coming up next week in Buffalo, and then they have another test down the
road in San Francisco. Other thanthat, they've got some really winnable and
comparable matchups the rest of the season. So you know, count maybe two
more losses for sure on the board, and then the Bucks are in every
single game after that, I think, you know, so It's going to

(20:22):
be a work in progress as theycontinue to build, but the execution is
going to be the main thing. You have to execute. Falls on Baker,
falls on the receivers who've had somedrops, falls on the offensive line
who has has to protect, whetherthat's in the run game or in the
passing game. You know, everyoneneeds to just execute better than if they
can do that because they have thetalent. We've seen that, we know

(20:44):
that, then they'll be in agood spot. So all right, so
coming up here after the break,we will talk about Baker Mayfield and what
should the Bucks expect versus the Falcons. We'll talk about that next. We're

back into this edition of the BucksReport. So the Buccaneers take on the
Falcons. This is a big game. I mean everyone likes to say that

(22:40):
the season's early, but or whatabout a quarterway through the season. The
football season is so short, sothey don't have a lot of time to
impress. And when you take alook at it with Baker Mayfield, I
think they kind of squandered and wastedthe bye week. They should have been
preparing a lot of things. Yousee out there as they were busy high
fiving each other in past themselves onthe back. You know, everyone was

(23:03):
talking about how Baker Mayfield is thisgreat quarterback and how Dave Canalis is going
to be the next head coach ofthe Bears. Maybe I think they should
have been spending more time concentrating onthe task at hand because they got off
to a slow start. To quoteBaker Mayfield, we sucked. The team
sucked, I sucked. So therewas a lot of sucking going around,
suffices to say. And I thinkthat the Buccaneers can't expect to convert every

(23:26):
third down. They like to letit get down to the wire and then
hope that you know, Baker's goingto step up by either making a great
pass or he himself is going torun the football. What is what are
you going to expect from Baker Mayfieldin this next game. Are we going
to expect a lot less sucking andis they going to return to form and
play like we've seen him towards thebeginning of the season. Yeah. So

(23:49):
I don't think the Bucks haven't hada statement game yet on offense, and
I don't think this is going tobe one of those either. Like I
said, I think the Falcons defenseis very underrated. I think Bucks fans
are still looking at the Falcons andyou know, Falkins and you know,
twenty eight to three and thinking thatin their head. But they've made dramatic
improvements on the defensive side of theball and so far I went to the

(24:11):
numbers fourth in the yards, fourthand passing eleventh and rushing you know,
fourteenth and scoring, they've made somestrides. Yeah, they still having trouble
creating turnovers and getting after the quarterback, but the pressures are there, just
haven't been able to finish. SoI think when you look at it,
you know, play cong's got tobe better too, because that's directly affects
Baker Mayfield. Some of these runcalls are putting them in a situation where

(24:33):
they're in those third downs right, and Bakers looked like Superman before this past
game, and you got to puthim in a better position where you're not
relying on him to put the capeon and you know, either scramble and
make the completion or scramble for thefirst down. So I mean that's going
to have to happen. But there'sdefinitely ways for them to attack this Falcons
defense. I think we just talkedabout it with Mike and Chris. Jeff

(24:56):
Acudas looked good. I like thenumber three overall pick that was supposed to
be, but Chris Godwin is stillone of the best wide receivers, especially
outside the numbers that there is infootball. Mike Evans is one of the
best wide receivers when he's on,and I think you can exploit some of
that those linebackers as well, Sotaking some shots over the middle there with

(25:18):
some of the guys in the slotwhere that's dt where they're usually getting the
running backs more involved, which Ithink they need to do. I think
that's one big thing they need todo, is utilize Rashad White and his
receiving skills out of the backfield asmore of that extension of the run game.
Because it's not working right now.More screens I think would be better
too. If you can't get therun game, you've got to get it
going. And you know in thatin that aspect, utilizing screens, utilizing

(25:41):
the running back out of the backfieldfor those quick little two yard dump offs
and let him you utilize his runafter the catch ability to gain those extra
three or four yards and put youin those better situations. But no,
Baker's got to play better. Ithink. You know, when you look
at the bye week, that firstweek is really kind of like of a
week for them. You know, they spend time with their families. A

(26:03):
lot of the guys go back totheir school during college season, you know,
they either get honored or they're justthere. They spend a majority of
that beginning of the week self scouting, watching the tape, They watch the
tape of the game, they watchtape of them, and they're still doing
that throughout that week. That's moretheir vacation week. They come back early
though and get that extra day atprep. But also they didn't have a
great offensive week of practice leading upto the Lions game, so he said

(26:26):
this week's practice was much better. So hopefully we'll see an improvement come come
Sunday against the Falcons. But youknow, I think for Baker to have
the game that he needs to do, the offensive line can need to continue
with that fantastic protection they've given himup front. Luke GETTICKI has been I
think the Bucks comeback player of theyear. From being unplayable at left guard

(26:49):
to being one of the best righttackles in football right now is just of
a believable story. I don't thinkenough fans are talking about his character arc
from where he was to where heis has just been incredible to watch.
But they need to make sure thatthey are dealing up the right place.

(27:10):
Baker's got to be able to,you know, make the smart throws We've
seen many times this year so farhis height has been a deficiency for him.
So putting him in a situation whereyou know, the middle of the
field is is where he hasn't hada lot of success, But in certain
matchups like this one, I thinkthat's where he can find a lot of

(27:32):
success. So some boots and somerollouts and stuff like that I think should
be in this game plan to allowhim to to, you know, to
make those throws. Without having todeal with a six five offensive linemen in
front of him. You know.So I think those are some things.
Again, stick with what works, you know so far, the efficiency over
explosive. Have work. Definitely takeyour shots, but move the change.

(27:55):
That's the biggest thing. You wantto move the chains down the field.
We've seen it twice so far thisseason where they've taken that ball and just
controlled half of a quarter by justefficiently moving the ball down the field.
Call it think and dunk, callit whatever you want. Name of the
game is to score points. Andif you can do that while taking time
off the clock simultaneously, that's gonnawin you ball games. So I think

(28:17):
that needs to be more of afocus. And I think, you know,
I think, like I said,I think this Falcons team is a
lot better than what people think.Offense is still a work in progress.
Vita Vea will be a huge thingto watch, dealing with a foot injury,
misspractice yesterday, was back today. If you're listening to this on another
day, we're talking about Thursday andFriday. But I think he's going to

(28:37):
be a huge thing because when Vidawasn't one hundred percent in that Eagles game,
they ran for over two hundred yards. This is a very potent rushing
attack with Bijon Robinson and Tyler alasyear, they're starting to get Cordello Parrison
back into it as well. Weknow how explosive he can be. If
they can slow down this running gameand make Desmond Ritter be more one dimensional,

(28:59):
that's where I think this Bucks teamis going to have the most success.
The offense needs to be efficient putpoints on the board. I don't
think you need to put twenty sevento thirty points on the board to beat
this Falcon. Seem at the defensedoes their job. Because Drake London has
been their best receiver, they stilldon't know how to use Kyle Pitts.
It seems, you know, BijonRobinson has been a factor out of the
backfield, but we've seen how goodLevonte David and Devin White have been sniffing
out those screen passes and disrupting thatpassing rhythm when they're trying to target the

(29:25):
running back and tight ends. Soyou know, it's Baker's got to be
efficient. Defense has got to lockdown that run game, and then I
think we were talking about a Buckswin and it to me. It's not
a must must win, but it'spretty dang close because I'm chalking up next
week as a loss. You're ona short week at Buffalo, that's gonna

(29:48):
be a very difficult game for them. You can take a lead in this
division, and you can you knowyou can afford to take that loss against
Buffalo. I'll come back and playthe Texans in Houston. I think you
can do that. But if youlose this game, then lose against Buffalo,
now you're starting getting slippery slippery water, and I don't think they can

(30:10):
afford to do that. Yeah,So I think at the end of the
day, all we can hope foris a victory. I don't care what
the score is at the end ofthe game, as long as it says
a W after the Buccaneers, Iwill be happy. Listen, jac I
