(01:38):
Bucks Report. AJ. Welcome tothe show. Thank you, pleasure to
be here. It's great to haveyou here. So we're already past week
one and the Buccaneers were victorious. They went into Minnesota against great odds.
It gets really loud in Minnesota, and I think they were the underdog and
everyone thought, well, the Vikings, we're gonna win, and it was

(02:00):
going to be an easy victory. It wasn't the case, as turnovers were
the kryptonite for the Minnesota Vikings, and the Buccaneers found a way to pick
up a big dub. It wasBaker Mayfield engaged giving them the stiff arms,
saying you got to put on someweights. There was just so much
to be excited about. What wereyour reactions to the Buccaneers taking down the

(02:23):
Vikings. I actually, to befair slick and eye on our show,
we've talked about this. I wasnot surprised, Dan. I think the
simple fact is the narrative of theBucks have been given unfairly. They think,
because that Brady is left, thatthe Buccaneers are all of a sudden,
this abysmal team, which is farfrom the truth. The Bucks have

(02:46):
major talent on offense and defense, and we have to realize for people who
haven't watched the Bucks, as wecan tell, the Bucks, even with
Brady, was not good due tothe distractions off the field with the Brady
the fourth situation. And then alsoin my opinion, mostly coaching Byron did

(03:07):
not do a good job. Butthat's never here nor there, but the
Vikings. I looked at the Vikingsinto this season, I said, wait,
they've lost Alvin Cooks say they donot have a consistent runner, which
will make them one dimensional, whichis the reason why they have a lot
of turnovers. We already know whoKirk Cousins is. And also the Bucks

(03:28):
defense, I don't know where people. Lavonte David is here, Devin White
is here, Vita Vea, anelite nose tackle, Carlton Davis, Dean
Glenfield who is all ready to haveproven that he's an elite safety. This
defense is stacked. And then thedraft helped. And then on offense,
we have the top three best widereceiver tandem and Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

(03:52):
Baker Mayfield came into the best positionthat he has ever come to in
his entire career. This is thebest team he has ever in. So
I knew that Baker was going tobe fine because Baker actually fits with this
offense. He's a dual. Hecan run and he can also throw them
to go. So I knew this. Everybody thought I was crazy, and

(04:14):
now they eat those words. Itell people the Vikings are good, but
they're that good. Yeah. So, I mean, that was an impressive
thing for the Box to pick upa big win. One of the things
I was listening Rick Stroud on theTampa Bay podcast that he has down there
is he was saying that the firstgame of the season is a liar,
not to put too much weight intoit. And I'm going to go ahead

(04:35):
and say a victory's a victory, and I'm going to be happy that they
picked up a dub. It wasa big deal there as they roll on
and play the Bears next. Buttaking a look at Baker Mayfield in particular,
this is the Buccaneers pollst Tom Brady, the three ring circus has left
the town and now it is BakerMayfield's job. As we went into this

(04:57):
season, they made it seem likeit was either Kyle Trask's job or Baker
Mayfield's job. At the end ofthe day, it was Baker Mayfield's job.
I mean, they paid him themoney, he has the pedigree,
he has the history. I justthink that they wanted to feel, you
know that Kyle Trask was involved withall this. Weigh in on this for
you? Have you always been incamp Baker Mayfield or was there ever you

(05:19):
know a time where you thought, maybe Kyle Trask is going to run away
with this. What were your thoughts? Well? Overall, for money wise,
I would hope that Trash would elevatejust so if the Bucks are successful,
we can still keep him due tohis rookie contract. But I always
knew Baker was going to be theguy. I knew Baker was okay once

(05:43):
I saw him with the Rams, and again I like his style to play
with this Buck's team because a lotof people, if you have to go
back and look at the history ofthe Bucks. Of course, Brady won
a Super Bowl with us. Thegoat did it. We're all grateful,
But when it comes to Evans andGod was statistically yardagewise, their best seasons
was under a gun slinging mobile quarterbackwith the Under the Brady regime, the

(06:09):
line had to be perfect, theplay player players, and the execution had
to be perfect. With Baker,it doesn't have to be that, so
it's not as much pressure on thesealignement. I told people Baker Mayfield is
a mobile quarterback, and he canmake things happen and make defenses fear the
bucks with these weapons because with theBrady. With Brady, everyone knew you

(06:32):
collapsed the pocket. Brady's not running, and that's no discredit to him,
but that's not what he does.Baker, on the other hand, if
he won us the game essentially, not just by that throw, but that
run on third and two, thatis a play that last year would not
have happened because Brady's not running,he would have eaten the sack. So

(06:53):
with under Brady, especially last year, you had to be perfect. This
year is going to be growing pains. And I love the competition that Canalis
and Bows did between the two quarterbacksbecause you don't want anybody to have an
entitlement issue when you come in thisleague after the Brady situation. In my
opinion, that's what the issue was. The last season and possibly the year

(07:15):
before that. Everybody had an entitlementafter the Super Bowl. This is what
you want. Competition breeds can breedeither greatness or it sifts out the guys
who don't want it. So I'mglad they did that because that competition,
I guarantee you propel Baker to thelevel to say, this is my last
shot. If I can't make itwith this team, then he's not gonna

(07:39):
It'd be very unlikely that he's astarter anywhere else. Yeah, and he
signed that proved me deal, aone year deal to kind of prove that
hey, to the NFL, tohimself that I am still a viable commodity
in the National Football League. Andyou take a look at what he did
with the Rams. For example,I was listening to him on a different
podcast and he said that he onlyhad about twenty four hours to learn the

(08:01):
Rams playbook and he was thrust intoaction, and all things considered, he
did a really good job. Therewas kind of mixed reviews out there when
the Buccaneers signed Baker Mayfield. Theykind of had their eyes set on other
different free agent quarterbacks out there,But ultimately I think they made the right
decision. The one thing I likeabout Baker is he has charisma. He

(08:22):
is good with the media, andyou know, just certain things that endear
him as a Buccaneers fan. Runningwith the football like you talked about,
and stiff arming that kind said putsome weight on those kind of things.
Just those kind of quirky things, are kind of things that get you pumped
up for Baker Mayfield, and I'mall in on him. Now. I
was kind of on the fence, you know, I'm like Kyle Trask,

(08:43):
you know, this was his jobat first kind of and then Baker Mayfield
came in here. But it isexciting. So if we take a look
at the game against the Vikings here, that is what wanted, is that
the Vikings turned over the football andBaker Mayfield held on to the football and
the Buccaneers found a way to win. If we take a look at the
game against the Bears coming up here, what is your recipe for success for

(09:05):
the box to pick up a bigw at home against the Bears with Baker
Mayfield at the helm. Well, the first things first, the Bucks need
to establish to run. That isa major priority because if they can do
that the way that Canalis has thisoffense, it's body shot, body shot,
body shot. Then the hay maker, which means start real slow and

(09:28):
then set it up for the explosiveplay. Now that means Rashot White is
going to have to excel because timeis short because Tucker and Edmunds are in
there, and they're gonna be They'rejust as hungry. So White has got
to hit the holes. But that'sthe main objective right now is to run
that rock. So you can setup the play actions, so you can

(09:50):
set up rollouts for Baker, becausethat is that is what's necessary. But
also even in the past, Ithink the Bucks need to establish more cross
routes. You have Trey Palmer withthat amazing speed, use it to your
advantage. You have Chris Godwin whowas good at running the slot or running
intermediate routes. You have Kade Ottonwho can be good up the scene.

(10:11):
So that is the main thing.Of course, running the ball is good,
and we're catching the Bears at theperfect time. Now other people might
disagree and say, no, thisis dangerous because they're desperate. But when
you're a desperate bad team, that'snot always a good thing because then you're
prone to make more mistakes. SoI can already tell you I think the
Bears they're gonna stack the box. They want They actually want Baker to beat

(10:35):
us with his arm. But ifthis run game, I'm telling you this
right now, if the Bucks rungame, if the Bucks can get between
seventy five to eighty yards rushing byitself, They're gonna they will obliterate the
Bears because the Bears won't have ananswer. And then that sets up the
big passes. So run the ballcrossing routes and set up the big play.

(11:01):
Yeah, and those are going tobe the keys for success. The
big thing I think the Buccaneers needto avoid is a trap game, going
into it and thinking, you know, we got this, We're gonna beat
the Bears. Oftentimes that is whatspells problems for your team. All right,
So coming up here, we willtalk about the latest with Mike Evans.
Will he be on the Bucks nextyear. We'll talk about that straight

(11:22):
ahead. All right, Welcome backinto this edition of the Box Report podcast,

(12:01):
brought to you by Seed Geek.Let's just take a look at Mike
Evans. That is the biggest newsfor me this year, Even bigger than
the victory is Mike Evans, whoI revere it is the top wide receiver
for the Box of all times. Some people, you know, I've heard
different things, But for me,I love Mike Evans. I like what
he brings to this team. Ilike what he has done for Tampa.

(12:22):
Weigh in for me on Mike Evans. Do you even want to imagine a
Buccaneers team without Mike Evans considering allthat he's done for this team. He
olds all kinds of records. Himand Chris Godwin are a good one to
punch. What are your thoughts onEvans? Go dohing but love for Evans.
Evans is the greatest offensive weapon forthe Buccaneers franchise ever, and I

(12:46):
don't think we'll ever. It's gonnabe really hard to replace a guy like
that. He's done so much andhe always shows up no matter who's throwing
him the ball. That's to mewhat makes him an exceptional receiver because a
lot of the great receivers we forgetin the NFL history had always elite quarterbacks
throwing them the ball. The greatJerry Rice he never had in a less

(13:09):
than an above average quarterbacks anything. He had two Hall of Famers throwing him
the ball, and then even laterin his career, he had an MVP
caliber and Rich Gannon throwing him theball. So that makes a major difference
in the you know, productivity ofa receiver. Mike Evans did it with
Josh McCown, Mike Glennon right inFitzpatrick, Jameis Winston, Brady Baker.

(13:33):
You know, so Evans. Ireally would like for Evans to stay here.
I don't want the Bucks to makeanother mistake and give up give up
on him. We already learned thiswith Derek Brooks. And here's the thing.
Derek Brooks at the end of hiscareer, Mike Evans is not.
He is still a in his primeyear as a prime player. We meet.

(13:54):
I really do hope the Glazers atthe end of the season can work
out a deal that makes Evan's happy, because Evans is a part of this
team's success. Without Evans, wedo not win a Super Bowl, and
that's the big thing. But aswe take a look at it here,
the deadline has passed. Mike Evansand his representation gave the Bucks last Saturday

(14:16):
as the deadline or the talks willcease. And I don't know if that's
ultimately true. I think that Evansand the Glazers and Jason Light have a
relationship there, and ultimately it isMike evans agent. It is his job
to pick up the phone. ButI am a bit concerned here. And
one of the things that was saidis that the box. The Glazers in

(14:39):
particular, they don't want to payGodwin and they don't want to pay Evans
the kind of money that they're lookingfor. Do you see them coming to
terms with the deal? Do yousee a situation where the Bucks have Godwin
and Evans both on the same teamlet's say next year. Absolutely. But
I only reason I say absolutely isbecause I'm beginness to existence. The Bucks

(15:01):
are gonna have a very productive season. They're gonna be They're gonna win the
NFC South, and they're gonna goto the playoffs. Now that is going
to determine how far they go,I tell you this, and also the
productivity of Evans. If Evans getsanother thousand yards and he gets the Bucks,
Let's say the Bucks make it tothe second Division around or even NFC
Championship, and he's one of thebiggest reasons why you cannot not have him

(15:28):
come back. Now, the Bucksare in a bit of a big situation
financially because you have to pay otherstars. Let's say Devin White has a
breakout another breakout Pro Bowl All Proseason. We already know Worf's is actually
the biggest expensive person in our squad. If he has a Pro Bowl left
tackle season, I get it.We get him one more year for a

(15:50):
fifth option. But Worf's in Winfield, So the Bucks just have That is
the beauty of having so many,so much talent when your roster. But
there's one thing that kills the NFL, a salary cap. But I do
think that if the Butts make theplayoffs and make a deep run, and
Evans is one of the biggest reasons. I'll tell you, if he gets

(16:10):
between thirteen the fourteen hundred yards andhe has at least twelve touchdowns, you
gotta bring him back. Yeah,I mean, just let's take a look
at him historically here, Mike Evans, thirty has recorded six hundred and eighty
three receptions for ten thousand, fourhundred and twenty five yards and eighty one
touched to touchdowns in his career. The twenty twenty one Super Bowl champion played

(16:33):
in that least thirteen games in eachof his nine seasons in the NFL,
catching four at least one thousand yardsand each So I mean, I think
at the end of the day, back up the brinks truck, give him
the checkbook, have him fill itout, and let's get it done.
And you know people, the insidersfor the Buccaneers or the NFL, they
say, well, it's not aseasy as that, because to your point,

(16:53):
they want other players to come backand they're not going to be able
to afford to pay them all.Touchdown there briefly, Devin White. Devin
White in the beginning of the yearsaid that, you know, it seemed
like he was done with the Buccaneersas well, and then he had kind
of a come to Jesus moment withJason Lte And what are your outlook for
Devin White as well? A dynamicplayer, make no mistake about it.

(17:15):
Him and Lavante David are a goodone two punch as well. Do you
see David coming back next year?Do you think that they will they will
work out a deal. I mean, if he has a really great season
this year, that just means he'sgonna want that much more money. Yeah,
it's it's it's really like a conundrumfor the Bucks because again the money
situation. But I say again,it depends on how deep this team goes.

(17:41):
Again, if the Bucks can getyou to the NFC title, and
I think Lavante and they're jelling alreadywith this with the new quarterback of the
new system. If they can getto that level, Uh, Devin,
he's gonna he's gonna have a momentwhere we can do this with or without
you, because Devin is not goingto be the sole reason that this defense

(18:02):
is going to be successful, astoo many other talents Vita Lavonte, Carlton
Winfield. I think I hope thatDevin understands as a team they're gonna have
to do this together and that youmight not if you want a hundred million
dollars, you'd have to play atthe Fred Warner level and surpass it.
But at this point, just ifDevin leaves, I wish him well.

(18:25):
I want him to stay. Buta lot of people on this team.
If this Bucks team goes far, somebody's gonna have to take take a pay
cut or someone is someone's gonna beleft out, not as fed as much
as they want, and that's justhow it is. We don't have the
salary camp and I hope that theyunderstand it. But I think if the
Bucks, if they get deep intothe playoff run, I do think the

(18:47):
players will have that understand it becausethey're gonna say, you know what,
we did this in one year.Just imagine what we do next year.
And we're all like in sync.So it really a lot of pressure is
riding on this season. If theBucks are ten plus win franchise, it's
going to be much harder. Now, let's say if the Bucks are under

(19:10):
like seven games, then it'll beeasier for the organization to go, Okay,
we don't need you, we'll needyou. So that's very important.
Yeah, and there's not a lotof players left anymore, like Mike Evans
that has kind of reworked his contractto accommodate Tom Brady and a lot of
other different players. Let's face it, we're still paying the bill on Tom
Brady after he's left here, soit is a bit difficult here. The

(19:30):
one thing I know about the Boxnow is they have a different look offense.
With Canalis pushing the buttons, it'snot so predictable. If you will,
we'll talk about what he brings tothis team. Straight ahead news Manscape

(20:55):
back into this edition of the BoxReport podcast. So a big change in
the off season as they added DaveCanalis as the offensive coordinator. One of
the things that was said about leftwhich is that he was starting to become
predictable, that you know, theyknew what was going to happen next time.
Canalis came here as a quarterbacks coachfrom the Seahawks, and there was

(21:17):
a lot of question marks out there. He had never really called a game
in that capacity. The last timehe would did that was when he was
coaching in high school, so therewere a lot of question marks. There
was a bit of a bumpy ride, I would say against Minnesota, at
least in the first half, andthen Mayfield and Canalis kind of dialed it
in. What are your thoughts aboutCanalis And how much better are the Bucks

(21:38):
right now with Canalis? And theywere last year a lot better. There's
two big things that Canalis has broughtthat I've seen, creativity and adjustment.
You are right in the beginning ofthe first half. You can see the
rookiness in him with the cause. At first they were two vanilla but I

(22:00):
think he was getting the field andthen by the second half. I think
he was more calm. He understoodwhat need to be done, he knew
how, he knew who to givethe ball to. Earlier, he was
trying to get co Keith the ball, and Cokeeth is not a big time
receiver. That's someone you dumped theball off too. But then when he
took advantage in the second half andfed the ball to Evans and Godwin and

(22:25):
start using Palmer, he started usingthe right weapons. And that is why
the Minnesota That's why the Minnesota Vikingsdidn't know what to do, because it
was predictable. We were two.We were unpredictable. And the body shot
mentality I love. A lot ofpeople don't know. The driver for the
Bucks that set the tone was thethird quarter when they chewed up over nine

(22:48):
minutes. That took a lot outof the Vikings. If anything, the
Eagles took a bit like a copyout of the Bucks playbook. Last night.
They were running the rock, theywere controlling the clock. They chewed
up a lot of minutes. Soif anything, the Bucks were the blueprint
on beating the Vikings. So theEagles took our they took our notes,

(23:11):
and that's why the Vikings are owingtwo. Yes, Canalis is good.
I like Canalis. I think he'sonly going to get better, and that
was one of the things that thereseems to be a bit of a rapport
as well between Canalis and Todd Bowles, as well as talking about what kind
of offense that they want to runhere as well. Dave Canalis says,

(23:33):
it jumps out on tape how hardthe Bears defenders chase the ball, So
ball carriers need to always be awarethat tacklers are coming from all angles.
That's kind of what I was talkingabout, not to sell the Bears short.
Dave Canalis says, Todd Bowles doesnot want a conservative offense. He
wants to be an aggressive attack whatthe defense is giving them. So I
think that is important. I thinkthat last year Todd Bowles played it a

(23:57):
little bit safe. You know, some times he wouldn't go for it and
they would. They would punt itin situations where I'm like, go for
it. There's only two yards here. So I do think that there is
a bit of a rapport between thetwo of them, and I think that
that will feed this offense. Again, there's only one game of the regular
season in the book, so Iguess I'll have more of an accurate assessment

(24:18):
a little bit later in the year. But well, the one thing I
do know, if the Bocks aregoing to have any success this Sunday,
they're going to have to do itwithout some key players on the team,
most notably Carlton Davis. Carlton Davisis suffering from what is being called turf
toe. We hear that quite oftenout there, but he is a dynamic
corner for the Bucks. Just takinga look at the other players that are

(24:41):
on there, not all of themhave is big of impact. Cancy,
who I was really excited to seeout there, Dennis, and then also
easy In is a bit of aquestion mark as well. As we know
he got that interception. Just kindof this guy that came out of nowhere
from Rutgers. I'm like, Iheard his name, wasn't too familiar with
him, but he kind of came. I'm like, I like this guy.

(25:02):
So of the players that I listed, of course, Davis is going
to be a big impact. Didyou think that the Buccaneers have what it
takes at corner depth to help fillthe role corner deepth I'm a I'm a
little suspect, but overall front seven, I do think the past rush will
be there for the corners, thoughI do like to go back to that.

(25:23):
Yes, Carlton Davis is our numberone guy. He's physical, he
knows how to, you know, swap the ball the way. He would
be considered like a top five atleast if he could catch the ball more
consistent. But that's another topic. But yes, I'm a little concerned because
I think Zion McCollum will be comingin and I'm still unsure about him,

(25:45):
to be honest, because he's areally hit or miss guy. Some day,
some points he'll he'll get it,but then for the most part he's
getting beat. So but the it'snot like the Chicago Bears have a Justin
Jefferson or an Addison. They dohave more, but I feel like more
will be more deadly. In theshort yard is thinking dump, So the

(26:07):
Bucks defense load the box and blitzon one side and make Justin Fields run
to a certain side where he's uncomfortablewhere he would have to throw it off
his body because we know Justin Fieldsis gonna want to run with his legs.
So if the Bucks front seven canget a pass fresh going a JTS
or Shack beartt. If those thosetwo guys get a pass fresh going,

(26:30):
it'll be a long day for theBears because the Bears don't have a dynamic
offense outside of More in their tightend. I forgot his name. I
think it's Met or something. Idon't see anything. Justin Fields is gonna
try to win the game again withhis legs. They'll take a few deep
shots just to try to throw theBucks off their game. But that's why

(26:51):
I say, if the Bucks blitzand they get enough pressure, it won't
really matter. The Bucks just haveway too much talent, and I don't
think they're gonna sleep on them becausethis is a new era, new regime,
and Vows already knows I can't Ican't afford it. He can't afford
to lose the teams that he's supposedto beat. So that's the big thing
too, and another question mark forme. And kind of I knew when

(27:15):
last season, when the wheel wasreally starting to wobble for this team,
was Ryan Jensen suffering that knee injuryin camp And it was a stupid thing.
It was in camp and a guygot kind of tangled up with him,
and he kind of he rolled thedice and he got stem cell treatment
instead of knee surgery, and helost that bet. As he may have
played his last game in the NFL. To be honest with you really don't

(27:36):
know. And Hainesi is the guythat is in there, but we're already
starting to see some weakness in hisarmor, most notably from the shotgun.
He kind of botched some of thepunts there, or excuse me, the
snaps rather. So are you concernedabout Haines out there for the long term?
I mean, I think, allthings considered, I don't want to
judge who he is just based onone games. But if you do watched

(28:00):
the game back, there were acouple of things where Mayfield had to kind
of jump forward to reach down forit. It wasn't as flawless as someone
like Jensen. How concerned are youabout Hainzi. I'm only concerned when we're
playing against a team that's really goodat the pass rush. I think a
lot of Buck fans gotta understand.I think Baker only got two quarterback hits

(28:21):
in one second. That one secwas really on Baker and the Eagles.
You're defending NFC Champions. He hurts, was sacked four times, and he
had a lot of more quarterback hits. So the Bucks line actually did a
good job as far as I cansee, because they did their job,

(28:41):
and when Baker did throw the touchdowns, he had all day to throw it.
I'm not as concerned. I dothink Hanesi will get better as the
season progresses, and that means theoffensive line is gonna jail some more.
So once that line fully jails,I don't think they'll jail until a week
ten or eleven, So I'm nottoo worried about it. I'm not too

(29:03):
worried about Hanesy is going to bea little aggravating, yes, but that
also goes to Baker. I thinkBaker is going to have to know how
to get the ball out and hehas to throw a little higher because he's
not your six foot five guy,so he's gonna have to be very careful
as well. Yeah, and Iknow that they had toyed within past seasons
with Leverett and that kind of thingat that position, but I think it's

(29:23):
one of the things that if Hanziis not the guy for the job,
then I think that they ultimately needto kind of search for someone else because
that is a key position, andJensen did leave some big shoes to fill.
Listen, I would be remisfied andtalk about Rogers in that game,
and I was, you know,it's one of the games where I was
doing something else. I'm not reallyyou know, it was an NFL game,
so I kind of had it goingon in the background, and I'm

(29:44):
like, I want to see whatRogers can do in New York here And
it wasn't one of the third orfourth play of the game, and he
went down, and I'm like, you gotta be kidding me? Here are
you? I can't believe this. That New York Jets team is cursed.
I mean, if you think aboutwhat he did for the Packers, but
then there's a lot of other thingsto consider, you know, the line
that's protecting him. If there's onething, if you take a look at
Brady, he made sure he surroundedhimself and he released the football quick enough

(30:07):
that there was no issues. Whatwere your thoughts on Rogers, assuming you
watched the game or saw the replayof it, what were your thoughts are
you thinking to yourself? I can'tbelieve this is happening. Yeah, it
was a shame. Actually, theJets put a lot of stock into him
making excelling this Jets team to thenext level. And it's football. Though.

(30:32):
It happens, it really does.I mean, just look at it
like Brady when he went down totwo thousand and eight season in one game
against the Chiefs when he rolled intohis knee. This football, it happened,
So it's gonna be the next manup. So but yeah, I
do feel for Rogers. It happened. But again, we'll see what happened.
He might necessarily play his last down. He's thirty nine years old.

(30:59):
You know, everybody's not. Yeah, I mean again, I don't have
any dogs in the fight there.I'm just thinking, you know, just
from an NFL perspective, it waskind of thing because I know that there
was a time that there was atalk about Rogers even coming to Tampa there
and uh, you know, itwas just kind of a flukey thing.
