(00:22):
Room in Clovis. Here's the voice of Fresno State Softball,
Matt Norvils.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
And good evening. We welcome you to Crawl and Walt
at five twenty six Bruce Avenue, thanks for joining us
here on AM thirteen forty Fox Sports Radio. iHeart app
and the Bulldog App. As we get a chance to
chat with head coach Stacy A. Johnson and a couple
of the student athletes as well. Presdent State softball playing
really well. They've won twelve of thirteen, just got off
(00:50):
of a ten game winning streak and currently tied for
first in the Mountain West Conference at five and one
with San Diego State. And I'm Matt Norble talking with
head coach Stacy A. Johnson. We haven't talked to you
for a couple weeks. Obviously, all you guys have been
doing is basically winning. So what's it been like the
last couple of weeks.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
Yeah, we've played well, you know, I think our pitching
has just been really good. We've been really tough to
score on the defense to defense behind them outfield makes
some pretty unbelievable catches. So it's been fun. It's been
a good win streak. We've got Emma Martinez back at shortstop.
I think that's kind of been the lynchpin, and then
also Alyssa Ramirez back in the lineup at designated player
as well, some third base and just a little bit
(01:26):
of edge. There was really all the difference from being
a pretty good team to being a really good team.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Yeah, you guys, you mentioned a couple of key names.
Martinez has came in at shortstop. I mean not saying
that Piped into a great job as a freshman, which
she did, but Martinez just makes some plays that just
other players can't make.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
Yeah, she is. Most just don't have her ability. They
can't get to the balls she gets to, they don't
have her arm. And you're right, Piped did a very
good job and she obviously showed her potential, so we're
definitely excited about her future. But Emma's ahead of her
right now, and that was exactly what our team needed.
And listensation does it on the other side of the
ball as well.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
We've talked about your schedule. You've done a nice job
of with your schedule. This year. You took on Stanford
at Stanford, Obviously, you played Cal you played some really
good teams, and you've beat some really good teams, some
teams that went to the NCAA tournament in Saint Mary's
that went a season ago. Overall, how have you liked
your schedule up to this point.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
I've liked it a lot.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
You know.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
We got some power fives on the schedule, and some
very beatable power fives. We got them into our home tournament,
so playing them at home, which is obviously an advantage.
There really wasn't a lot of fluff on it, you know,
so the games where you should win, it's not like
you're dealing with a top three hundred team. It's you know,
the teams you should win. It's a top one twenty
(02:42):
five team, and so it ended up being a really,
really good schedule. Obviously, we've done very well with it,
and we're starting to see that in the RPI rankings.
As well. We're in the top fifty right now and
we are very very close to being in the discussion
for and at large bit to the NCAA tournament. So
it really excited with the way the schedule played out.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Yeah, and you mentioned a couple of reasons why your
pitching has been good. Really from day one Stanford Invitational,
the pitching staff was outstanding. We're going to talk to
a couple of the pitchers here in just a few minutes,
but what have you seen from them this season, because
you've got a couple of attornees that come in and
they've looked very good.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
Yeah. Well, they play as a team, you know. I
mean you've been watching enough to know that we make
a lot of frequent pitching changes. It's very effective. We
keep them in the parts of the game where they
can be the most successful as individuals and it lends
to the team's success. They do it, and they do
it selfishly and selflessly, and you know, they all have
(03:40):
the same goal of winning the game. You know, that's
really what it comes down to. Plus an unbelievable defense
behind them. You got to give them credit to so
you know, we don't give up a lot of runs
we're really tough to score on. Sray Andie obviously returning,
Faith Jordan a returner, and then Campbell Pooha coming in
as a transfer from Hawaii. Those have been the big
three arms that have really kind of held our opponents
(04:02):
at Bay.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Yeah, you talk about that staff, but what's interesting is
they can all start and they can all come into
the pen, which I mean, you know, E've been around
the game. Not everyone can do that.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
No, I mean, they're just you know, I mean, they're
they're adaptable, they're tough.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
They have all.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
Done well in every single role that we've asked them to.
And you know, you go back to un l V.
I don't know that we expected the rotation to go
the way it did, especially starting with that first game,
and you know the way that they had a game plan.
You know, they had a game plan for Sreya and
they executed it was it was good for them, but
you know, at the same time, she just bounced right
(04:37):
back and Campbell Pooh got a tremendous relief early in
that series that I think kind of turned the tide.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Yeah, she had eleven straight retired in that game on
Friday Night. Then Soraya comes in gets the save the
next day, pitching staff was fantastic. Let's talk about the
outfield though. Your defense in the outfield, I mean you
play obviously three because that's all you can play, but
you've got about five deep in the outfield that you
can use definitely.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
Well, you know, everybody knows Reveledo in center field is
she's incredibly rangy, and then her arm is unbelievable, one
of the best I've seen. You know, Iragoian's been playing
a lot of left field. She's really rangy, and she's
tall and she's long, so she gets to a lot
of balls, makes catches that a lot of people don't make.
And then Elias has been seeing most of the innings
and right field, she's also tall and fast and long arms,
(05:22):
and they just they strong, army, they get to a
lot of balls. But you're right, you know, we how
about Kilni.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Need to need to make a couple of nice plays
on Sunday at un.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
LV absolutely Olivia Hill.
Speaker 4 (05:33):
You know.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
So there's a lot of really good outfielders. Doesn't matter
which one we put out there, it's a good outfield.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Yeah, and you got speed too, so you can get
to a lot of balls and maybe you see other
teams around the league and around the country that can't
get to your team can get to, which helps you
a lot.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
Yeah, I mean you saw that with U and LV.
There were a couple off the bat where you know,
the runners legging out of double maybe a triple, and
then all of a sudden it's caught. And yeah, I
don't know that it's a surprise to us and our
dugout because we see it consistently. But I know that
those athletes when they fill that ball off the bat,
they think it's down and it's not.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
Let's talk about what happened yesterday. Guys that went to
Santa Clair doubleheader won both of those games. A non
conference matchup midweek. You've got conference the starting backup tomorrow
against San Jose State for three games. What'd you see
yesterday from your group?
Speaker 3 (06:17):
Well, we jumped all over them in the first game,
which was great. You know, they saved they're better pitching
for the second game, and obviously that was a lot tighter.
I think that their pitching staff is much improved, and
I don't know that they have the caliber of athlete
that we have here. But having said that, they're a
good softball team. You know, regardless of the caliber of athlete,
you know, their pitchers don't throw quite as hard, and
(06:37):
they're you know, their batters aren't quite as strong, that
sort of thing. But you know, they're a good softball team.
And so for us to go in to beat them twice,
to hang on in that second one and get the
win even though it was tough, you know, that was
just great momentum.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
Now you turn into the page tomorrow, you've got San
Jose stad who obviously, preseason wise, everyone would put them
towards the bottom, and they're playing really good softball. And
they come in just take and two of three from
Colorado State. They're three and three in conference play, and
that'll be a tough series starting tomorrow, Friday and Saturday.
And what do you see from them?
Speaker 3 (07:07):
Well, I think they're a bit of a sleeper because,
like you said, I think going into this season they
were projected to not be great. But what happened was
they returned a lot of their athletes, and all of
their athletes got a little bit better. And so I
don't know that their contenders for first place, but I
think what they are is a team that can beat anybody.
I think that they're pitching is you know, maybe again
(07:28):
maybe not as talented as ours, but they're tough, you know,
they're really tough, and they they compete and they throw
competitive pitches and they do it for seven innings and
keep them in the ball game. And they've got enough
offense to win some games. So to me, that's that's
a dangerous team. You know, I think they have it
out for Fresno. I think for them, you know, this
is this is a rivalry game, you know, for us.
But we I think, you know, we we get a
(07:49):
little more hypes for Boise. We get a little bit
h hyped for San Diego State. But I think if
you're if you're San Jose State, I mean, you know,
Fresno is is the team across the way, and you
want to you want to beat them up, And so
I don't think that that can be lost on us
as well. I told our team that today is you know,
we can't be out competed, you know, we can't be
the team that wants it less. That we have to
(08:10):
want it just as at or more and that's how
we're gonna come away.
Speaker 5 (08:13):
With this win.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
What do you think about the Thursday Friday Saturday instead
of the traditional Friday Saturday Sunday. Obviously did that because
you guys got a mid week game on Wednesday. But
how do you like that? Well?
Speaker 3 (08:23):
I like it for next week, and I loved it
for this week with the way that Santa Clara doubleheader
turned out, obviously, going and playing ten innings in the
second game last night, so we played, We played seventeen
innings yesterday and traveled up and back the same day.
So that was a long day. And you know, so
so does that fatigue carry into the weekend. Hopefully not,
But you know, I didn't love it that we do
(08:44):
all of a sudden, we're playing tomorrow. I would have
loved to have just given today the team off, but
it didn't work out that way. But I can tell
you know, you know next week that's it's going to
pay off.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
We're talking with head coach Stacy may Johnson. We've got
a couple of student athletes coming up here in just
a few minutes, a coach before we let them come
up in Campbell, Poua and Nice. Just talk to me
a little bit about those two that we're gonna chat
with here in just a couple.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
Two really unbelievable pictures. They are, you know, awesome teammates,
awesome people, excellent students. I think you guys are gonna
be excited to hear them talk on the radio because
they're just really really cool people first and foremost, and
second of all, you know, they just go out there
and they just win, you know, and and they do
it together. You know, I mentioned that earlier, but I
(09:27):
don't think that that to me, those two and and
really all of our pictures for that matter, none of
them are as good as they are without each other.
And it just that that's just the way it is.
You know, if if one, you know, comes in the
game with a basis load of jam, we get out
of it, you know. And that's and that's how they
make each other better. So really really phenomenal young women.
I think everybody's gonna be excited to hear them.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
Well.

couple of student athletes here Tonight's say Anice, who we've
(13:47):

Speaker 12 (13:56):
Guys, thanks for having us, Thank you for having us.
Speaker 2 (13:58):
All right, Sarray, we got to start with you. I'm
gonna read a little bit of your accolades All Mountain
West last season, preseason, All Mountain West. This season off
to another fantastic start. What's the season been like for
you so far?
Speaker 12 (14:09):
Thank you so much.
Speaker 13 (14:10):
Honestly, I like I'm nothing without my team. They've just
been like such a great support behind us and have
just like met the world to me this year and
like in the past couple of years, but it's just
there's something special this year. I'm really excited and I
just think I think it's been a good year. I'm
it's rof a good start and I'm ready to.
Speaker 12 (14:26):
Keep it going.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
Yeah, it is. You guys are having a fantastic here.
Talk to me about your relationship with Kennedy. I know
we got it. We talked about it all the time,
but she's so important. It's always funny watching you two
interacts when I'm broadcasting the game.
Speaker 12 (14:36):
I know, it's so funny.
Speaker 13 (14:37):
She's just so good at like call me, like just
knowing when to come out and like just call me
down or like say a joke or something, because sometimes
I get in my head and she's like, oh, she
just knows how to get me back out and like
back and engaged with the game. And I'm just I'm
so grateful for her, and she's just such.
Speaker 12 (14:50):
A great teammate.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
All right, Key, we got to introduce you to the
Red Wave. Faithful. They've obviously if they've shown up, they've
seen you in the circle. But now we get to
hear your voice. All right, So what talked me through
your decision? Obviously you're at University of Why what made
you choose Fresno State?
Speaker 5 (15:06):
So actually my pitching coach knew coach Shelby before, so
he was very highly recommending Fresno When I was talking
about leaving because one of my biggest fears was going
into the portal and like not finding a place that
I liked, knowing that I was leaving somewhere where I
had a lot of good like friends and good people.
And one of the first things he told me was
(15:27):
that they recruit good people like they recruit good softfule players,
but most importantly, they're going to look at who you
are as a person, because if you aren't a good person,
like it's hard to be around people like that. So
as soon as he told me that, it was very strongly,
I'm like, yeah, it's close to home, so that couldn't
ever be bad. But yeah, it was a lot of
help from a lot of people. You know, I played
(15:49):
for all his dad who played for Presido in the
past four years, and he was another person that was like,
they're a great coaching staff, they have a lot of
good girls. I think you'll really like it there and
they have not been wrong.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
Had you ever been to Margie Right Diamond before you came.
Speaker 5 (16:03):
I played my CIF championship game here my senior year. Yeah,
and I remember seeing the stadium and I was like, WHOA,
this is big, And I was like, WHOA this is nice,
and it's nice to kind of be back here, a
kind of full circle moment from high school.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
Talk to me about that, you know, you get Campbell
Pho in there. She said, she already has kind of
a relationship obviously with your pitching coach, who's a very
good pitching coach. And what was it like when your in.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
Well, first of all, I watched that CIF championship game. Obviously,
the CIF has played at Margie Right Diamond and my
office is right there, and so you know, I just
walk out and watch those CIF games every year. So
I knew who she was immediately when she went in
the portal. I knew exactly who she was, and I
had seen her pitch, and obviously she came very highly
recommended by her pitching coach as well. But you know,
(16:52):
I think no pun intended, but I think she was
the key to the staff. You know, I think she
really rounded the whole thing out. And you know, we've
got tremendous pitchers, but I think that she was the
one that really took it to Now we went from
being we would have been a good pitching staff if
we hadn't gotten her. We are great pitching staff with her,
(17:13):
and so in many in many senses, she was absolutely
the key. And you know I mentioned before they started
as you're dealing with two fantastic young women right here,
and you know, in the first two minutes you can
tell already.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Oh yeah, totally and your team is kind of built
like that, which is what Key was kind of talking about.
All right, let's get down to the nitty gritty stuff,
guys about in terms of pitching. So what did you
work on this summer and what were you trying to
really develop to get yourself even better than what you
were the season before.
Speaker 13 (17:40):
Yeah, for me, I think I was just trying to
just expand my leap out a little bit further and
also just keep trying to drive out straight. And then
I've also been kind of developing like more of a
low kind of pitch, because I think the past couple
of years it's been definitely a lot of like high
and so like kind of developing that like low fastball
has been really fun.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
Yeah, and you can already see it this here. It's
actually been pretty good for you. You've noticed that.
Speaker 5 (18:03):
What about you, Key, I've done a lot of work
on an inside pitch because for me, I used to
throw a screwball and I didn't really like it, and
I kind of straight away from it my first years
of college and I got here and instantly Coach Shelby
was like, Okay, we're going to figure something out. And
(18:23):
I think it's been working pretty well. I have some
times where it's in, but that's okay, it happens, But
Coach Shelby's be really helping with that along with developing
a change up because obviously it's very important, and just
spending a lot of time in the book with Coach
Shelby working on developing those two and that's been the.
Speaker 12 (18:38):
Key to my success.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
Guys, talk to me about that relationship with the pitching
coach in Shelby Miller, because obviously that's an important one.
Speaker 5 (18:46):
Yeah. I love Coach Shelby. She is one of the
most positive people I've ever met. Like, even when I
think that I've done nothing but bad, she always finds
something good about it and always helps me to see
the bride side because it's very easy to get stuck
in the negative. And she's very big on making sure
that we're all close instead of just like focusing on
one or two people, which is very common in a
(19:07):
lot of places. She's very big on developing everybody at once,
working through our strengths and our weaknesses. And it's actually
amazing because we have a pizza party after this.
Speaker 2 (19:18):
Oh really because we okay, okay, all right, what about you?
What you're about your relationship because obviously you've known her
now for two years two and a half.
Speaker 13 (19:26):
I'm honestly I'm going to second key like she's just
like such a great strong or just shoulder to lean
on sometimes if I if I get really down on myself,
is like she's just there to like bring me back
up and see the positive and help me from getting
too hard on myself. And like, I love like what
she's doing with the staff because or with the pitching
staff because I just feel like, especially this year, like
we've been going on like picture hikes and stuff. So
(19:47):
we're gonna go on one in Utah, I think, and
I'm really excited for that, and I just think like
we just have been closer together because of it, and
I'm really grateful for Coach Shelby and the rest of
the our coaching staff.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
That'ld be pretty cool because you guys would be out
in Utah for almost like five days or so, maybe
even more than that might be six for you guys, right.
Speaker 3 (20:02):
Well, staying out an extra day for that BYU games.
So so yeah, that'll be a five day trip.
Speaker 2 (20:07):
Well that'll be a that'll be a long one. Talk
to me, So talk to me about pitching coach Shelby Miller.
We've talked about her before, You've talked about I mean,
you spoke so highly about her and what you think,
but obviously the relationship she has with the girls is
even better.
Speaker 3 (20:20):
Yeah, well, there's a lot I could say. I bring
this up, and I feel like I've been bringing this
up more and more because I don't know that she
sells herself, you know, as much as she can. Because
let's go back and look at it. You know, the
proof is in the pudding. That first year and we
had an ERA of six, okay, and then you two,
(20:41):
we had an ERA of about three seven, And then
we year three, we had an ERA of about two seven.
And our era keeps going down, and you know, and
it's like, you have two seven, how much more low
can you? But we are. We continue to go down
and they continue to get better every single weekend. You know,
we thought, hey, the pitching staff did a great job
at Stanford, but putting opponent batting average was over three hundred. Well,
(21:04):
now that number is falling off the table and everything's
getting better. And so I mean, I can sit here
and tell you guys that she's unbelievable, but at some point,
just look at what she's done with them, you know,
and she is. She's awesome with them. She's awesome with
them on a human level. She shows a lot of
care and intentionality and and spends a lot of time
with each one of them individually to get the best
(21:25):
out of them. And I just, you know, I just
think the world of her.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
And not to rehash from last year, but she did
have the Mountain West Picture of the Year and and
all Mountain West selection. We's sitting right next to too,
So I mean you had pretty good pictures for you guys.
All right, talk to me through how you guys go
through before you throw the ball, Like Siraya's got the
one where she basically shows you the ball you've got,
as I call it, kind of the double pump. So
how did you guys come about? How did you come
(21:50):
to that before you throw the ball?
Speaker 5 (21:53):
I actually used to come over my head like a
lot of pictures. And then I was doing a drill,
working on like pushing out and like power line drive
all that stuff, and I was never able to figure
out how to get my hands but my head again,
that's where I am.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
That's okay, all right, Soria.
Speaker 13 (22:12):
I think it's actually twelve you state and I we
were talking about the concept of arm delay and pitching,
and so I went up to my coach before the
game and I was like, hey, like I kind of
figured out something new, and so I showed him, like
I want to do something like face it goes, and
so he's like, okay, throw off you And then I
threw it and he's like, okay, you can do as
much as you want until it starts not being great.
Speaker 12 (22:34):
And I fear like a one run shutout or.
Speaker 13 (22:37):
One hit shutout or something like that, and I just
stuck and I've just been doing ever since.
Speaker 2 (22:41):
It's always interesting when you because we get to see
a lot. You see a lot too, obviously, but it's
just how everyone goes about their making because there's no
right or wrong way.
Speaker 3 (22:49):
No, no, not not really. I mean the one they
there's a certain point they have to be in the
right position, but the way they go about it is different.
I actually have a really great story. I don't know
if I've told you this, Sorea. It was Soraya's freshman
year and well, I guess let me start with this.
One of the first questions Sarray asked us when we
started recruiting her, is are you going to change my
scorpion move. I said, no way, We're not touching that.
(23:11):
So I think that put her at ease. But her
freshman year, we played Central Florida down at the Judy
Garment in Fullerton and that team, Central Florida team went
onto a super regional. They were a very very good
offensive team, very good, and Soraya pitched at least a
portion of that game four or five innings, gave up
(23:31):
one run, and that team could hit. I ended up
talking to Cindy Ball, the head coach, after that game,
and she actually after that season, after their super regional,
and she said, are you going to change that? I said,
no way, no way, and she said good. She said,
you know that that kid at South Carolina throws seventy
three miles an hour. I said yeah. She said, we
(23:51):
scored five runs off of her, but we only scored
one off of your lefty. She said, don't do a
thing to her. I said, okay, So I thought that
was cool.
Speaker 5 (23:58):
Stir.
Speaker 3 (23:58):
I don't know if i'd ever told you that.
Speaker 12 (24:00):
I don't think he did. That's super cool.

Absolutely, this is the Bulldog Softball Hour where a krol

and head coach Stacy May Johnson. I'm at normal. Thanks
for joining us and listening on AM thirteen forty Fox
(27:35):
Sports Radio. We're at Crolwolf five twenty six. Bruce Avenue,
you listen to us on the Bulldog app for iHeartRadio
as well. We welcome you, and we talk about student
athletes a lots every single time. We got to talk
about academics. I know we have to. So we're going
to find out what your majors are, how class is going,
and what are you trying to do with it? And
Soraya start us off.
Speaker 13 (27:55):
Yeah, so I'm actually a psychology major and I would
love to be a sports psychologist and pitching coach when
I grow up. And I'm trying to get my minor
in sports coaching too, which would be pretty awesome.
Speaker 12 (28:04):
And yeah, my classes are going really well.
Speaker 13 (28:07):
I've think I've really been enjoying like just the teachers
at Present State. I just think they're really interesting and
intriguing and engaging, and I really loved my classes so far.
Speaker 2 (28:16):
How important do you think psychology is for what you
do on a softball diamond.
Speaker 3 (28:19):
I think it's.
Speaker 13 (28:20):
Like, like, you know, the saying, like the game's ninety
percent men.
Speaker 12 (28:22):
So I've actually learned a lot from.
Speaker 13 (28:25):
My psychology classes that I've flied to the field. It's
really and yeah, it's really fun to like kind of
apply that in like real life.
Speaker 12 (28:31):
It's been pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (28:33):
What about you, Key, I.
Speaker 5 (28:34):
Am a sociology major and I am hoping to go
to law school after I graduate and become a lawyer.
Haven't decided specifically what type yet, either thinking civil rights
or I'll go and do the boring one and be
like the contract one and the business law. I mean,
whatever works. I don't mind contracts are kind of like
(28:56):
little puzzles. But yeah, classes been good. I had an
exam today. I think I aced it.
Speaker 2 (29:03):
I I okay, there we go.
Speaker 5 (29:04):
Yeah, but it's been really nice. All of my classes
have been great. All of the professors have been amazing.
I haven't had a problem with any of them, and
they're just really great on making you feel like they're
actual people instead of that they're above you. They're very
good at being like no, like let me help you,
because I've been in your shoes before, so it's been
really nice.
Speaker 2 (29:22):
Do you guys feel like you've learned better in bigger
classes or smaller settings.
Speaker 13 (29:28):
I kind of actually like both because I do like
the lecture portion. I think that's pretty fun. But I
also really like the classes where it's like you get
to talk to like your peers and like engage with
the teacher. And I think I think overall, probably small classes,
but I think both are pretty awesome.
Speaker 12 (29:40):
Yeah, I would agree.
Speaker 5 (29:41):
I think smaller classes are just more personal and it's
a lot easier to get help if you need it.
But I think that there are benefits in each one
because if you're in a big lecture, there's always people
around you that can help you instead of having to
find time. But yeah, I would agree with Ray though
a lot of small classes.
Speaker 2 (29:59):
Take me back, what's been the toughest class you've had
so far.
Speaker 13 (30:04):
I'm gonna say communications for me, just because it was
my freshman year and it was like a little bit
of a difficult class and it was like my first
time doing like speeches in front of classes, and I
would like go up.
Speaker 12 (30:14):
And i'd just start shaking. But I think it's prepared.
Speaker 2 (30:17):
Me for today. When did you take that your freshman years?
Speaker 12 (30:23):
I think it was I think it was fall.
Speaker 2 (30:25):
Okay, I'm pretty sure I was gonna say it prepared
you for the inter because we've interviewed you every year,
so it's prepared you every single year. So all right, key,
what about you.
Speaker 5 (30:32):
I wouldn't say that any of my classes have been difficult,
but I have gotten one beer like an eighty nine.
Oh and it was the sociology of prisons, and it
was talking about prisons and like the patrol people and
all this stuff. It was odd. And I only will
say that it was the most difficult because it wasn't
(30:55):
as interested in it.
Speaker 2 (30:56):
Oh, there we go. Yeah, okay, that's that. It's fair.
Now what's the most fun classic pad?
Speaker 5 (31:01):
Oh, I'm in a theology of a culture class right now.
Speaker 2 (31:03):
Okay, it's interesting.
Speaker 5 (31:06):
Mount of damn questions are really odd. It's nice because
they're really recent, so it's not like I have to
look up history in order to answer and like give
my thoughts on it. It's very much in the moment.
What did you think about it? Like a week ago?
Speaker 2 (31:20):
Compared to now, what about Ustria.
Speaker 12 (31:22):
I have a couple.
Speaker 13 (31:23):
One of them was I think it was like sophomore year,
and it was a kind of like a nature class,
so we learned about like the national parks and like
their preservation and stuff, and that was really interesting. And
then for psychology, probably a normal psychology because it's a
lot about like the disorders of the mind and stuff,
and it's really interesting learn.
Speaker 2 (31:38):
About it, says a psychology major. By the way, it's interesting,
coach talk to me about Obviously, these two young ladies
are very intelligent. You can clearly see that one's talking
about a bee. I mean, we know what that means.
So when you get kids like this that obviously take
school so important obviously not just sports, how do you
draw the violence.
Speaker 3 (31:58):
Well, well, they make my life. I'm not chasing these
two to class. Obviously, they're clearly both brainiacs. If you
didn't know that, you can tell by just listening to
them talk. And Keana gotten eighty nine one time, so
you know, No, it's they're awesome because obviously they take
care of business. They're adults. They start their homework early,
they get it done early. They don't wait till the
last minute. You know, it's just they're just awesome student athletes.
(32:22):
And then I think it helps them on the field
because then they're not worried about, Hey, am I going
to get a bad grade in this class? Or did
I bomb that test?
Speaker 2 (32:29):
No?
Speaker 3 (32:29):
They never bomb that test, and so they can just
focus on what they need to focus on when they
get to the field every day.
Speaker 2 (32:34):
Is she right about you? Guys? Don't procrastinate? Is she
right about that? Saty? You get your work done so
early that you don't you have to think about it.
Speaker 12 (32:41):
I might procrastinate a little bit, but I'm not too.
Speaker 2 (32:43):
Bad, all right, What about your key.
Speaker 5 (32:45):
I'm in all online classes, so I either get all
my work done on Monday or I have like two
assignments due on Friday. Okay, but they're never hard assignments.
I do the hard assignments early.
Speaker 2 (32:55):
Smart there you go. Okay, all right, talk to me
about academic advisor because so far we've had this what
a couple of times now and everyone raves about your
academic advisor. How do you feel?
Speaker 3 (33:06):
Oh man, Well, they they just got some bad news today. No,
it was a couple of days ago. But well, the
reason why he brings that up is because every single
time we do this video, everybody talked about how great
Kevin is. Kevin is the bus and we always laugh
every single time, every time, every time. But we're very
(33:26):
happy for Kevin. He just recently accepted employment at the
University of Washington, which is where he's from, Okay, and
he's got some family stuff going on back in Washington,
and so we're very very excited to see him be
able to get closer to his family.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
How important was he for you guys though, up until
he just left a couple of days ago.
Speaker 12 (33:45):
He was.
Speaker 13 (33:46):
He was just He's a great human and just like
super fun to work with, and he just like helped
me through like just anything from like just everyday problems
to like obviously figuring out clas schedules and stuff that
you could just talk to him about anything.
Speaker 5 (33:57):
He was.
Speaker 12 (33:57):
He's pretty amazing and we were really grateful to have him.
Speaker 5 (34:00):
Yeah, Kevin was very welcoming when I first met him,
and like Ray said, you can go to him for anything.
There are so many people on the team are like yeah,
I just when I talked to Kevin today and I
like it was like, that's so odd because I came
from a different school and that wasn't something that we did.
And then I went in with I want to say
Ruby and Faith one time and I literally just sat
there and I talked to Kevin for like an hour,
(34:20):
and I was like, this is amazing. I see why
you guys do it.
Speaker 2 (34:24):
You know one thing that I've noticeding coach about your
team that we've noticed the last couple times we've done it,
how much you guys are a family and how important
it is having good character on your team.
Speaker 3 (34:33):
I mean, they just make the experience really awesome for
all of us, for each other, for our staff and
everybody involved. You know, nobody likes going to work with
with the stinky people, but but we just have amazing
humans that they just love each other. They work towards
a common goal. Everybody's on the same page. We all
want to win a championship. And and they're they're sacrificial
(34:55):
about it too. I mean, you know, they a lot
of them have to make sacrifices on the field for
the players around them, for the team. Everybody's asked to
do that and they do it wholeheartedly. And I think,
you know, Ray alluded to it, but I think that
this is a special group and you don't always know
how to predict these things, but I can tell you
(35:15):
without the quality of character that exists amongst our young women,
like I just don't think that you have that mix,
but we do. We have it this year, and I
think it speaks to a lot about who they are,
not just how they play, but who they are.
Speaker 2 (35:28):
Yeah, I would agree with that, and you can see
it on the field big time. I mean, you guys
are very positive as a unit. I mean I'm not
down on the field, but you can just tell my
body language and everything, and I think that is a testament.
I talked me through your guys' goals this season, and
so coming into this year, obviously you'll want to win,
but what were your goals coming in maybe individually that
you guys are thinking about.
Speaker 13 (35:48):
For me, just keep like cutting down my walks and
keep just trying to keep honing in my like spots
and keep spinning my I guess, just keep spinning my
pitches and limiting them out of it. So like just
kind of the normal things, but also just also a
personal goal for me was like kind of just keeping
in like keeping myself external for my teammates and stuff
(36:09):
like trying not to draw inward and like get down
on myself, but like be there for my teammates. And
I feel like recently, like I've broken a barrier. So
I'm really excited about that. And I think I'm a
I think I'm a better teammate because of it, So
I'm excited.
Speaker 5 (36:20):
Well, my main goal for this season was to just
find the love for the game again and just the
joy that I had when I started softball when I
was six, or when I started it in college, just
in general, you know, And I think that I wouldn't
have been able to get to accomplish it or even
get as close to accomplishing it without the people on
(36:40):
the team and the coaching staff, because obviously came from
a different school and I had some of my best
friends there and leaving them was really hard. But at
some point you have to realize that, hey, maybe this
isn't where I need to be in my life, or
maybe you've outgrown something, or maybe you just need a change.
And coming in very nervous, but since day one, everyone
(37:02):
has made me feel very welcome, and there hasn't been
a single person that's made me feel like I'm not
good enough on the field, which helps to make you
feel that you are good enough because as hard as
it is to not care what other people think, when
you're around people so much like they do become your
family and their opinions do matter. And honestly they've helped
me realize my worth and help me just truly love
(37:25):
being out there on the field again, whether I'm on
the field, in the dugout, in the bullpen, I just love.
Speaker 12 (37:30):
Where I am.
Speaker 2 (37:31):
Well said, you are good enough, by the way, there's
no doubt about that. I mean, head coach A. S. A.
Johnson knows that too, so the Soraya. This is the
Bulldog Softball Hour at Crowling Wolf five twenty six. Bruce Happening.
We'll take another break, come back with more from the
student athletes. It's Bulldog Softball.

way tomorrow as they open up a series against San
Jose State. It's a three game series. Six o'clock tomorrow
is the first pitch. Same on Friday and then on
Saturday it'll be at noon. And so come on out
to Margie Wright Diamond. Bulldog's playing really good softball. They
just had a ten game winning streak. They have won
twelve with their last thirteen games and I have twenty
one wins already on the season, top fifty in RPI.
(41:35):
So it's a good softball team. So stopping out this week,
it should be a good weather and a beautiful nights
as well at the ballpark. All Right, we've talked a
lot about academics and we've talked a lot about what
you guys have done on the softball diving themselves, but
let's talk about what you guys do when you're not
playing softball and you're not doing academics hopefully staying alive, right.
Speaker 12 (41:56):
So yeah, okay, I'll answer our story.
Speaker 5 (42:01):
I love to read. I am constantly reading, whether it's
a physical book or my phone, but I love it.
I also like to do my nails. I change them
every week for every series. Right now, our string coach
Corn is designing them because he designed them when we
beat Boises, so got to keep it alive right now.
So that's what I'll be doing tonight. But yeah, a
(42:21):
lot of reading, a lot of nails.
Speaker 13 (42:26):
I also love reading. I'm actually rereading The Lord of
the Rings again. I love that series. And I don't know,
I like being out in nature a lot. And on
that note, Key and I have a funny story to tell.
And it was back in September and we were like, oh,
let's go do let's go to shaver Lake and like,
let's go just swim for a little bit. And so
I found this place. I'm totally spacing what was called.
It was like something something campground and so we were
(42:47):
up there and it was like a beautiful swimming spot,
and so we were swimming for a little bit and
we're like surrounded valley trees. It's so pretty. And then
so we're swimming and then all of a sudden we
hear like thunder, except as like a beautiful boue guy.
Speaker 12 (42:58):
So we're like uh, and we.
Speaker 13 (43:00):
Look over and the tree across from us is shaking
and we're like, oh no, and all of a sudden,
it just starts falling straight towards us. I thought we
were done for it's not gonna lie, and so we
both went like covered her heads and thankfully landa like
probably like twenty feet away from us, So that was good.
Speaker 12 (43:16):
But we got like showering debris.
Speaker 3 (43:18):
It was crazy.
Speaker 12 (43:19):
And then we called that one a day and got
some sonic and went home, so that.
Speaker 2 (43:23):
Would call it today if a tree falls.
Speaker 13 (43:25):
Yeah, we took a couple of pictures of like proof
and then really, you have.
Speaker 2 (43:29):
Any idea why the tree just fell?
Speaker 12 (43:31):
Nope, I have no idea. It seemed fine and then
all of a sudden.
Speaker 2 (43:33):
It just fin Then you had to call that, right, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (43:37):
Yeah, I got a phone call from story. I'm on
a Sunday in September.
Speaker 12 (43:42):
This is odd.
Speaker 3 (43:42):
And I pick up the phone and she says, coach
me and Keana almost just died. And she sent me
the picture and there's a fallen tree right in the
pond and she showed me right where they were were swimming.
And I believe what's the term widow maker? Is that
what those are called? The fall on dead trees? So
we almost lost two pictures in one day.
Speaker 2 (44:04):
That is a wild story. What were you thinking when
you first got that call, you know, Sunday September, You're like,
what you're not thinking it's gonna be a good call? No?
Speaker 3 (44:13):
No, it's no, it's if it's a Sunday in September,
it's probably not a good call. It was the middle
of the day, so can't you know, be anything too bad?
But you know, they were both alive when I talked.
Speaker 2 (44:24):
To them, So that was good. That is good. And
you guys are bonding, right, So you got it even
closer because of that, right? So does that mean from
here on out? I assume you made the plans. Does
that mean now Key makes the plans?
Speaker 15 (44:34):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (44:35):
Is that what it means? Guys? I talked with every
athlete about this, and it's kind of a serious topic, obviously,
mental health this day and age, we talk about it,
you know, just with the grind. You've got a lot
of pressures. I always say, you've got your pressure from yourself,
the pressure from your coach, pressure from your parents, pressure
from broadcasters, fans, all that stuff, and then you throw
(44:55):
on academics. How do you what do you do to
just like clear your mind?
Speaker 14 (45:01):
Again?
Speaker 5 (45:02):
I like to read. For me, it's just easy to
go into another world because sometimes it gets really overwhelming.
And I think it's just finding any type outlet. I'm
very big on anything that just brings peace and quiet.
My friend and I like to joke that we're like
old Grandma's already because we like to crochet and do
like thousand piece puzzles.
Speaker 2 (45:23):
Nothing wrong, man.
Speaker 9 (45:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (45:24):
So it's just anything like really simple just to distract
me from the chaos.
Speaker 12 (45:29):
So anything too simple, yeah, kind of somewhere to key.
Speaker 13 (45:33):
Like, I really love reading it. I've always my mom's
the elementary.
Speaker 12 (45:36):
Library, and so I have to read, and no, I
love it.
Speaker 13 (45:38):
And I just I really like driving, just taking a
drive and like going up to like Shaver and just
looking at like beautiful scenery and start gazing and talking
with my family, Like they definitely help calm the chaos,
and I'm really grateful for them.
Speaker 12 (45:49):
They're as humans.
Speaker 2 (45:51):
So funny. She mentions family. I was telling her, I
think I run into Soirea's family more than anybody ever,
and it's always on the road, like it random spots.
I ran into him in Vegas, ran some him in
at airport in San Diego. I just random spots. I
run into Sarreya's family.
Speaker 3 (46:06):
They're everywhere.
Speaker 2 (46:07):
They're everywhere. And your mom was telling me, she's like,
I'm gonna be coming back. She's like run in again
because she's flying in for the series, she said this weekend.
So it's just interesting how Saya's family is everywhere.
Speaker 3 (46:19):
They're everywhere.
Speaker 2 (46:20):
Yeah, speaking of family, talk to me about family a
little bit, obviously, Sorea, your family, you guys are close.
Talk to me about what's family like for you.
Speaker 5 (46:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 13 (46:29):
They're like just my greatest supporters and I just am
so grateful for them and I love them so much.
My brother actually surprised me in Vegas. I didn't think
he was coming, and I like looked at my leg
through sixty I'm like.
Speaker 12 (46:39):
Oh my goodness.
Speaker 13 (46:39):
My brother's here, like I haven't seen him in a minute,
and he's at Oregon State College now he's living his
Bechtl life. But it's just it was super nice to
see him. And just as always, I see my mom
and dad a lot more so. But I love I
just love spending time with my family. We just go
and just do fun things and yeah, it's amazing.
Speaker 2 (46:56):
What about your key?
Speaker 5 (46:57):
So I have three older brothers and I'm the youngest
and the only girl, so it's probably the stereotypical sibling
relationship you would expect, but they're honestly some of my
favorite people and my biggest supporters. They never fail to
keep me humble. I will say that I got a
text from my brother before Vegas no boise because it
(47:18):
was his birthday, and he said, don't suck. It's embarrassing
it's my birthday. And I was like, you're right, got it.
Speaker 2 (47:25):
I won't suck.
Speaker 5 (47:26):
But yeah, we're all very close. My mom is honestly
one of the strongest people I've ever met, whist my
dad when I was in high school. So she's honestly
been our entire family's rock. She comes to everything that
she possibly can She's supportive of everything that we do.
And when I was in Hawaii, she'd be there every
single weekend. Like she feels so bad when she has
(47:49):
to miss a game. I have to tell her it's okay.
But yeah, I wouldn't be anywhere that.
Speaker 2 (47:53):
I am without her family. Maybe had good families obviously,
which makes her good kids. And what's it like coaching
you ladies.
Speaker 3 (48:00):
Yeah, I mean they're awesome and that's uh. People say,
what are you looking for in your program? Like, well,
great people from from great families, right, and then you know,
cold blooded killers on the field, you know, so uh,
And that's exactly that's exactly what they are. You know,
they're they're they're wonderful. I mean, the apple doesn't fall
far from the tree. So it's it's no surprise that
(48:21):
they come from awesome people and they have awesome support systems.
Speaker 9 (48:25):
You know.
Speaker 3 (48:25):
I know obviously I know Candy Well and Art and Summer.
I've we've known them for years and and they've just
been tremendous supporters of their daughters of the program, you know,
the both of these days. They have their own stories.
But to me, when I sit here today and look
at them, I honestly, and I say this on a
on a human level, not so much the softball level,
(48:47):
but I can't imagine a better fit of program for
either of them. I think that this has been a
tremendous place for both of them to really come alive
and be who they are and be the best versions
of themselves.
Speaker 2 (48:59):
One thing we have mentioned yet. One's a lefty. One's alridy.
For people listening on the radio, Soraya is the lefty
and he is the righty.
Speaker 3 (49:06):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (49:06):
And so you got that kind of you know that
you can bring in you got a lefty in the circle,
bring in a rity, which is what happened on Friday night.
So talk me through that one. It's kind of funny,
you know, is sorea Key comes in for you and
you're like, hey, no, sweat, he's gonna come in, retire
eleven in a row. We're gonna be good.
Speaker 12 (49:22):
Yeah, no, pretty much. I was like, Okay, like, wasn't
my best day? That's all right. He's got my back.
Speaker 5 (49:27):
She's an absolute.
Speaker 12 (49:28):
Stud, just great human.
Speaker 13 (49:29):
I just adore her, and yeah, and I knew she
got my back and I was like and I was like, yep, no,
Spar's there.
Speaker 12 (49:34):
So I'm just so grateful to be part of the
staff in this team.
Speaker 2 (49:37):
Kay, what's it like knowing when you're in the circle
Soray's got your back and vice versa.
Speaker 5 (49:41):
It's honestly just really freeing because there's a lot of
times when you're out there and it's like, oh, well,
what if I do bad? What if I do bad?
And coach they see talked about at the beginning of
the year that we're not playing for ourselves, we're playing
for this team, and it's I had a little mission statement.
We're back a small dog, We're gonna beat the big dog.
But it's really true that, like, even if I don't
(50:03):
get the job done, someone on the bench will like
And it's no secret that I use my defense like
I'm just gonna do what I do and I know
that if the ball gets put in play that they're
gonna get it out and I have no doubt about that,
and that's why I walk off the field before the
ball's caught with the thurn out.
Speaker 2 (50:18):
That is true though, that you do that. I see
that every time you gotta I asked Ray already about this,
but you first year with Kendall, I'd be behind the plate,
talk to me a little bit about the bunker or Kennedy.
Speaker 5 (50:30):
Sorry, I love Kennedy. I think she's one of the
sweetest people ever. She is a great heart, a great soul,
and like Ray said, she just really knows how to
talk to you. Like she's very good at reading you,
reading the defense, and she knows when to come out
to you until you like, hey, you're good, And she
knows when to come out and be like hey, like
you need to figure it out because otherwise I don't know.
(50:53):
But yeah, she is just very smart on the field,
knows how to read people, and honestly, like I would
not be as successful without her buying the plate.
Speaker 2 (51:04):
Yeah, Kennedy, man, she is. She is a boss. That's
one thing for sure. We've said that every time we
talked to her. I'm like, man, you are a boss
on the field. But she she does a great job
with the pitching in it.
Speaker 3 (51:14):
Yeah, she does, And she is a boss. I think
she's got a really nice combination of a soft touch
when she needs it, but like, but she's got a
firm hand when she needs it too. I mean everybody
knows that, but I mean I'll tell you this, And
she knows how to calm them down. You know, it
doesn't happen very often, but it does happen where you know,
I'll get irritated with the offense or something and come
(51:34):
in there and line them up and probably say nothing productive.
Just you know, I'll figure it out and but give them,
you know, no coaching on how to do it. And
that's where even Kennedy steps in for me. Sometimes it
is like, well, okay, guys, we're gonna tack the outside bitch,
you know. And so she just she just does a
great job with that with the team and it just
has tremendous leadership qualities.
Speaker 2 (51:54):
That's gonna wrap up our time with the student athletes. Guys,
thanks for joining us in good luck this week and

plays San Jose State on Saturday, and then sling on
out to Cronwolf at five twenty six Grouse haven't thanks
(56:15):
for joining us here tonight. I'm Matt Normal head coach
jacy A. Johnson alongside. We talked about this weekend series
San Jose State, but after this weekend, got a big
one doubleheader against San Diego State on Wednesday. That'll be
a gigantic series. I mean just a one game, one
day kind of series, but it's two big games that day,
and then you've got Nevada at home a week from Saturday.
Speaker 3 (56:35):
Yeah, obviously San Jose State comes first, but you know
after that, probably the toughest four game stretch in our
conference schedule in San Diego State on the road in
the Nevada Saturday Sunday. I mean, if I had to guess,
you know, between US, San Diego State Nevada, my guess
is that's one, two, three, and I don't know the order,
but I think that's one, two, three, so you know, well,
(56:57):
we'll be prepared for it. We've been played well, you know, hopefully,
hopefully we're peeking at the right time and and really
gaining steam going into our toughest week so far.
Speaker 2 (57:06):
You told me this beginning of the season, you said, hey, Matt,
we don't lose in Margie Right Diamond, and you've got
three big games this week and against the Spartans, where
obviously you want to win the series, but you'd like
to take all three.
Speaker 3 (57:16):
We could, we could take off. I do think it's
gonna be tightly contested. I don't know. I think some
people are looking at it thinking, know, you guys are
gonna run way with it. I don't believe we will.
I think we're gonna play two run one run games,
you know, maybe a third one we separate a little bit,
but I think there's gonna be two one run games,
you know, and we obviously want to end up on
the right side of those.
Speaker 2 (57:36):
What is it about Margie Right Diamond that you guys
are really so excited to play there, but you play
so well there?
Speaker 3 (57:41):
Yeah, I mean, it's the crowd, it's the environment. We
know how to win there. We know what it takes.
We have a good feel for the scoring environment and
and and how we generate offense. And then also you
know how to manage our pitching staff and those conditions
as well. And but but you know, the red wave
is just unbelievable. Those opposing teams come in and we
(58:02):
hear them say so loud. They're not used to it.
They're not used to having to communicate over the noise,
and you know, they kind of get lost in it.
But we're very used to it. And you know, our
our crowds are tremendous and they provide a big boost
for us.
Speaker 2 (58:18):
Yeah, the Saturday against Boise State, that's as loud as
I've heard it in years. It was really loud for
that afternoon game against Boise. Well, best of luck this weekend.
Coach will be with you every step of the way
and go get it when tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (58:30):
Yeah, thanks Matt.
Speaker 2 (58:31):
That's head coach Stacy may Johnson. That's gonna wrap up
