Speaker 1 (00:02):
On the Bulldog Sports Network from Learfield. This is the
Bulldog Baseball Hour, brought to you by bud Late, Easy
to Drink, Easy to Enjoy, Table Mountain Casino Resorts, Lucky
Days and Epic Nights, and by Pepsi official soft drink
of Fresno State Athletics. Live from the Crow in Wolf
(00:22):
tap Room in Clovis. Gear's your host, the Voice of
the Bulldogs, Paul Leffler.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Well, good evening from Crow and Wolf in Clovis as
the Bulldog Baseball Hour. Yes, college baseball season is here.
The Diamond Dogs opened this past weekend. Maybe you were there.
If you weren't, well, you're not out of luck because
they're home again this weekend against Cayl State Fullerton Friday
at six, Saturday at three Sunday at one. We're going
to talk about the team for the next hour here
at Crow and Wolf in Clovis. It's right off a
(00:51):
hernit in one sixty eight and it's Wednesday night and
that means karaoke at Crow and Wolf. So as soon
as we're done, karaoke begins, hosted by James Johnson here
at Crowling Wolf on Wednesday nights, usually from six to
nine tonight. We're stealing their first hour, so people are
going to be really eager to sing when we get
done coach over them.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
Have you ever done karaoke before?
Speaker 4 (01:13):
No?
Speaker 3 (01:14):
No, no, new first time for everything, my friend.
Speaker 5 (01:16):
No.
Speaker 4 (01:17):
I think there's some things that are left to the experts.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
I asked James, who hosted, if anyone ever does take
me out to the ball game? He said, yeah, could
you handle that one?
Speaker 4 (01:29):
Yeah, that would be an easy Well, I'm not going
to say, but maybe on the lighter side, I suppose
of your choices.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Have you ever just, you know, with teammates or watched
your guys do karaoke and learned more about some of
your players or teammates.
Speaker 4 (01:47):
Yeah, I don't know as much karaoke where sometimes you
hear maybe more a little locker room time, or it's
time on the field, maybe song is let out that
you find out. Maybe more so who's not a singer?
I think is more likely than anyone learn who is.
I would say on the field.
Speaker 6 (02:06):
I've had that experience in church on Sunday mornings sometimes too,
and I think I'm the one who's not the singer.
We're here at Crow and Wolf in Clovise, here till
seven o'clock talking Bulldogs baseball. Ryan Overland, the head coaches
with us. A little bit later on, we're gonna have
a couple of the Diamond Dogs players show up, Sky
Collins and Caden Munster to local products who had great
opening weekends for the Diamond Dogs. It's hard to look
(02:28):
at the Diamond and not see local products. Coach over Then,
you've been around the program for a long time.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Your national championship team in two thousand and eight had
a lot of Valley natives on it. Can you remember
a team that you were connected to though, that had
more guys seen more time that are actually from the
valley than this twenty twenty five group.
Speaker 4 (02:48):
Yeah, I mean I probably go back through some rosters
and look, but I find it hard to believe there's
one there's more of an impact than we've got so
far starting off the year that I think it was
eight of the nine in the starting lineup on Friday.
We're from the valley and we take a lot of
pride in that in recruiting, and we know what it means,
you know, for kids that grow up here that have
come to games, the baseball games, football games, basketball games
(03:11):
and to where the Bulldog uniform and to be a
Bulldog is something special and be able to keep some
really good players here locally vers special.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
I know we've got some questions coming in for you
already if you're not able to make it to Crow
and Wolf, and if you get on the freeway, it's
real easy to get here. Just to exit Herndon off
at one sixty eight, you take a quick left and
a right and a right and you'll find your way
here right off of Herndon at one sixty eight Crowing
Wolf tap Room.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
The food trucks tonight.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
You have pizza from Basil Bloom and you have sauced
up barbecue. So whichever one of those strikes your fancy,
come join us here at Crowing Wolf here till seven o'clock.
And if you don't have tickets yet for this weekend,
go Bulldogs dot com. Or maybe we'll have a couple
to give away. We shall see. One of the questions
that came in from a super Bulldog fan who listens
(04:01):
to every game on the radio, Lauren.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
He said, how.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
Hard is it to figure out the bullpen juggle for
this pitching stay staff? Two of your best relievers from
last year, Aidan Kramarosa vic Adiola going to the rotation,
He says, do we need one of those guys to
close or how's that going to work out? That's a
pretty big question, And that's a question I'm sure you
and pitching coach Troy Buckley have gone over a few times.
Speaker 4 (04:28):
Yeah, I think that kind of nails where we're at.
Still figuring that out a little bit, and Lauren nails it.
Hopefully you have me. And obviously when you lose some
innings like you did from the year before with Jake Dixon,
Noah Beel and the rotation and anchoring Friday and Saturday,
you got to replace that. And obviously and then losing
(04:48):
Jake riding as well, that would have been a big
piece of this rotation. So yeah, those guys sliding into
the starting role, and we've got some guys to you know,
kind of figure out really where they're going to fall
into with the bullpen, and you know, Caleb Vanishes throwing
the ball really well twice for us, and Cooper Bergman
getting back healthy, and some other guys still to get
out there and get some more outings and especially to
(05:10):
find out against this competition, we will these first couple
of weeks. You know that BYU lineup was veteran and
a lot of really good hitters that are going to
do some damage. And Fullerton's going to be a team
that's going to make you pay for it. And then
Santa Barbara and TCU two preseason top twenty five teams,
So those guys are going to get some real battles
before we get into the league play.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
And the opening weekend had some real special moments. You
get the first two, third game gets away from you.
In that fourth game, you're in position to win a
four to two league going to the eighth and it
gets away, So you you go.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
Two and two on the opening weekend.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
I'm sure you guys have spent a lot of time
talking about this too, and probably already spoken to the
team about it.
Speaker 4 (05:50):
What do you take away.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
From those four games in four days at the start
of the year, the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Speaker 4 (05:57):
Yeah, I mean, obviously trying to I mean, ultimately, no
matter what the final score is, you're trying to coach
your players up to play the best they can and
then understand situations when they come up and ultimately play
the best baseball and keep getting better as the season
goes along. That you know, we talk about even back
in the fall that we don't want to be We're
not going to be as good as as we can
(06:18):
be in February. If we're as good as we're going
to be today, then it's the rest of the season
is not going to be worth much. So we're hopefully
building towards May and and in the June. And you know,
obviously even in the games that you win, sometimes there's
things to point out there that, you know, some mistakes.
We had a couple of base running mistakes those first
two games, even in a win that if those games
are closer, might change change a game there. So you're constantly,
(06:40):
you know, trying to take it, like you said, the
good and the bad from each and ultimately keep getting better.
And sometimes those things are magnified in the loss and
sometimes maybe get your attention a little more from losing.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
We've got another question that just came in on Twitter
or the x app, and if you've got a question
for coach Overland or the two Diamond Dogs that are
on their way in a little bit as soon as
they're done lifting weights, Cayden Munster and Sky Collins.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
Cayden still needs to lift weights.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
Oh yeah, I'm gonna ask him about that a little
bit later on.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
He definitely showed some muscle in his debut weekend as
a Diamond Dog.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
But this is.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Robert with the question, what did b Yu do differently
the last two games that affected the bats?
Speaker 3 (07:24):
I mean they're facing different pictures.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
I know that was part of the equation, but there
there did seem to be a little different approach.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
Maybe yeah, I think their their starter on that second
game Saturday did a good job of changing speeds and
moving the ball around, and you know, it's kind of
that game. Both those games, there were some balls that
we talked about a lot. When you play games early
mid February, early March, some night games at our park,
(07:51):
balls and carry like it does April May, and especially
at altitude, and there's let's say there's probably four or
five balls we hit in those two games that those
are home runs and doubles in a month. And we
talked to the guys about before you don't want to
lose going. Oh we hit some balls well to the
warning track for outs, and we kind of learned that
lesson a little bit on the fly there, But I
(08:12):
mean credit to their pitcher, And obviously that's the thing,
especially over a three game series and especially four games,
there's adjustments to be made. And obviously they did a
good job and some guys that could execute it pretty good.
And yeah, they did a good job. Obviously that guy
that second game did a good job of changing speeds
and then the kind of got out of some situations.
(08:33):
We had a chance to get some runs on that
we didn't take advantage of.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
Yeah, and sometimes you can execute a really good swing
and you don't get results. You mentioned some of the
balls that might have gone out later this year, and
there are a couple, probably maybe the two hardest hit
balls of the weekend were out.
Speaker 4 (08:51):
The ball Murf hit to left field that had top
spin that.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
Almost went to the wall, and the ball Eddie hit
that was the double play that ended money. I mean,
he hits a rocket down the line, but the first
baseman's holding the runner on and is there to turn two.
So is that those bad breaks? Is that part of
where you take them to? Hey, this is why you
can't give their hitters free bases, why you have to
(09:16):
handle every ground ball, why you have to do those
little things because sometimes you can do a job really
well and not get rewarded for it.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
Yeah, and obviously the closer to the score of the game,
the bore. Those things are magnitude. I mean, you could
look at even some of the game that some situations
in the games we won that didn't show up as
much because of the score dictated that. Now when you're
in a one to two run game, those those things
are magnified. And like you said, the free bases definitely
being a big piece to that. And then yeah, in
(09:45):
the game, that might have been the hardest hit ball
all weekend that Eddie squared up, and not only the
guy holding them on, but being a left handed first base.
But if that's the right hand of first basement, I
bet that probably gets by him and Stransky even shortened
his lead, you know, really not much. She kind to
get out away at them. It wasn't so much that
he broke off running, as that ball scores right at him.
He was gonna have to get out of the way
(10:05):
of it. If the first basement really good And that's
but that's the game, and that's why you try to
put yourself in the best positions to be the most
successful as often as you can, because the game isn't
always rewarding in that way to square up a ball,
or sometimes you hit one get jammed or hit one
off the end that finds its way in. But there
the more times you can do things right, those things
will be on your side.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
He's coach Ryan Overland.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
His Diamond Dogs split four games against BYU on opening weekend.
They'll host the Titans of cal State Fullerton Friday, Saturday
and Sunday at Pete biden Field A Bob Bennett Stadium,
six o'clock Friday, three o'clock Saturday, one o'clock Sunday. Go
Bulldogs dot com is where you find your tickets. We're
going to talk about that series in a moment, but
you know, some people are listening that didn't follow any
(10:48):
of the games this weekend and they're not even really
realizing that college baseball is underway. We just talked about
how many Valley guys you have on this team, But
what else about this year's because every year is different,
every team's different. What else in the short time that
this season has been going, you've had them back, you know,
for fall ball for a little while, and now you've
(11:08):
got four games under your belt. Is there something you're
already noticing about this team that is an indicator of
good things to come?
Speaker 4 (11:17):
Yeah, And every every team does kind of build its
own personality, even though there'll be some pieces carried over
and not every team kind of has its own personality.
But I think this group is definitely a group that
loves to work and they take their work serious, and
they they're pretty disciplined and how they go about it,
and sometimes you kind of almost a little bit more
(11:37):
some some of the group. You got to pull the
reins back a little bit. And they talked about monster
lifting weights and these guys that they want to get
after it and they want to work and they want
to overdo it sometimes that you got to kind of
monitor that part. So and that's one of the first
pieces as a coach, you know, just understanding your your
team and how they go about things and is the
focus and the dedication in the right places. And I
(11:59):
think this team definitely how's that type of makeup?
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Fresno State hosting cal State Fullerton Friday night at six

Speaker 3 (16:18):
Coach Ryan Overland is here right now.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
Talked a little bit about that opening weekend against BYU
and coach especially on Saturday for that double header. Sun
came out a little bit after rain Thursday and a
little rain Friday. Really nice crowd on Saturday for that
double hunter.
Speaker 4 (16:34):
Great crowd. Yeah, that was really good, especially opening weekend,
I've been a little cooler, and especially coming out of
this week now, the last night looked it's going to
be in the seventies this weekend, So especially with the
three o'clock start on Saturday at one o'clock Sunday, I
would expect some really good crowds.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
I'm glad you brought that up. So I was going
to ask you. I figured I didn't need to look
at the phone or anything. You already have been perusing
the weather for the weekend. So temperatures in the seventies
this weekend for the Titans and the old Dogs, that
old rivalry renewed.
Speaker 4 (17:02):
Yeah, that's especially for early season. Second week. Can't expect
much better weather than that and no rain in the forecast.
So yeah, we can get in the seventies and have
some great crowds come out and support us like we've
had mobs the opening weekend in the last couple of years.
And to like you said, renew you know, one of
the best rivalries in all of college baseball, especially on
(17:22):
the West Coast. I'm bringing Fullertson here that haven't been
in over twenty years. So for a weekend series, it'll
be exciting.
Speaker 2 (17:30):
Yeah, you brought that up over the weekend, and that
took me back a little bit because the Titans have
been here for midweek games, but they haven't been here
for a weekend series since two thousand and four, a
year that ended with.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
Them winning it all in Omaha.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
And that was a really good series that weekend at
Pete Biden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Speaker 3 (17:47):
I was remembering some of that. I remember Matt Garza
pitching for the Diamond Dogs. You would end up catching
him the next year.
Speaker 2 (17:53):
Was it Jason Windsor that was the star pitcher for
Fullerton there?
Speaker 4 (17:57):
Yeah, yeah, Windsor and Romero, Ricky Romero.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
Cky Romero had uh yeah done some damage against the
Dogs almost they're a no hitter?
Speaker 4 (18:06):
Yeah, were there for that game? That was the next game?
Speaker 3 (18:09):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (18:09):
Yeah, that was That was good staff. Do you remember
who broke up the no hitter? Bau Mills single up
the middle. You got a lot of hits. I got
a lot of hits. I have been a good guess.
That would have been a good.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
Guess well, and and not to stoke the flames, but
I also remember that after that series, there was an
article in a newspaper where George Horton, who was still
the coach of the Titans at the time, basically said, well,
Fresno State really shouldn't play us anymore.
Speaker 4 (18:38):
They're not good enough. That was the read between the lines.
Speaker 3 (18:40):
You remember that.
Speaker 4 (18:41):
Uh yeah, yeah, that was that was shared. That was
shared with some folks, for sure. We were very aware
of that, but yeah, but it was a bit excited them.
Obviously went down there and played them last year in
a really good series and back split the first two
games in a close game on Sunday, So it'll be
it'll be really good college baseball between these guys. And
that's again the history between the two programs, and probably
(19:04):
in the top three of questions or things suggestions maybe
that I've gotten since becoming the head coaches Winter, Fullerton
and Stanford gonna come back and play and one of
them won't play us, and the other one will be
here this weekend, So be exciting.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
And you brought up last year's series, which was a
real intense series there at Goodwin Field, and first time
I had had the chance to see the statue that
they built honoring a former Bulldog player who played in
Omaha for the Dogs in nineteen fifty nine and then
turned the Titans into a national power.
Speaker 4 (19:39):
Augi Gurrito.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
Of course, here we have the Pete Biden statue, and
for many years in the eighties there's Bob Bennett against
Augie Gurto and two of the best programs in the
country going toe to toe or fist to fist, depending
on what year it was. So the Titans are coming
here this weekend, and I think I heard that that.
Speaker 3 (19:56):
Maybe we might see Stanford on the schedule in the.
Speaker 4 (20:00):
What near future, somewhat somewhat near future, it'll be. It'll
be up there, though there's only one location that looks
like we're going to be playing, and that's fine, but yeah,
no again, like you said, with the history of these
of these programs, it'll be exciting to renew that this weekend.
Speaker 3 (20:16):
And that's where the Titans were this last weekend.
Speaker 2 (20:18):
They were at Sunken Diamond in Palo Alto, the Cardinals
scoring a lot of runs and sweeping that four game
series from cal State Fullerton. So the Titans are still
looking for their first win of the year when they
get here for that Friday night six oh five first
pitch against Jack Anchor and the Diamond Dogs. Jack is
the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week. I was doing
(20:38):
an interview earlier today with our friend c K from
Fox Sports Radio who said he was coming tonight, keep
your eye on for ck out here. I actually heard
him on the Bakersfield Fox Sports radio station on my
drive up here today. We were talking about Jack Anchor.
He was asking me about Jack, and I gave him
my take on why he's so special and and what's
(20:58):
changed for him since last year year. But you would
have a much more detailed view of that. What's different
about Jack Anchor as a junior starting on Friday nights
versus the sophomore that pitched a gym against the Titans
down there last year.
Speaker 4 (21:14):
Well, really, I've mean, you go back to that start
down there, in his first three four starts from last
year before you know, really kind of started having some
arm issues that pretty similar, you know, those first three
four starts before that started kind of becoming a thing,
and the stuff suffered a little bit. He was in
control and the biggest thing, obviously, the fastball command is
(21:35):
at a really high level. Being able to put his
fastball on all four quadrants and then mixing in the
off speed and you really kind of the tale of
last weekend from both pitching staffs to show you can
move a fastball around, throwing off speed for a strike,
you're going to pretty good success. And when those things suffered,
than the free bases come and then the hits come.
(21:55):
So yeah, jack and Jackson competitor. Obviously he's not. He's
going to attack his own He's going to attack hitters
and go right out guys. I mean, I think there's
definitely some maturity and some steps that have been made
as he's gotten older. But those first couple outings last
year were pretty elite too.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
They were and then he had the injury, which really
made a difference in your season. I mean, things changed
a little bit after that. You got him back at
the very end of the year, and he did help
you win that Mountain West tournament. And I got the sense,
I don't want to put too much on it, but
I got the sense that he kind of doubled down
his commitment.
Speaker 3 (22:29):
You can never there's no full proof way.
Speaker 2 (22:31):
To prevent injuries, but that he kind of renewed and
intensified his commitment to conditioning and the weight room and
everything he can do to be as healthy as he can.
Speaker 4 (22:42):
Yeah, he's definitely dedicated, you know, to everything he does
on the weight room and what he does with nutrition
and staying hydrated and sleep in which I think again,
we got really a roster full of guys that that's
extremely important to him. And you can see some of
the changes some of these guys have made with their
bodies and adding strength. You know, Jack understands obviously, you
(23:03):
know what it means different to go four weeks to
start in a row versus fourteen weeks in a row.
And that's what he set out to do, and we're
gonna need him. We're gonna need him to stay strong
and healthy and obviously having a guy like that starting
off a weekend and get to get deep into a
Friday start and I enough to use your bullpen on
Friday as a major piece to having a successful team.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
This Friday night, six o five, the first pitch at
Pete Bidenfield at Bob Bennett's Stadium, Jack Anchor will be
on the mound for the Diamond Dogs. He's the Mountain
Wets pitcher of the week. After that ten strikeout, no walk,
six scoreless innings debut against BYU. Gotta take a quick
break more with Coach Overlin. When we come back, we'll
have them talk about these two young men who just
walked in Sky Collins and Cayden Munster, two diamond dogs
(23:46):
you can watch on Friday night if you get your
tickets at Go Bulldogs dot com. Come hang out tonight

Yeah.
Speaker 2 (27:12):
The Diamond Dogs started this last weekend against BYU. They
host the Titans of cal State Fullerton this coming weekend
Friday at six Saturday at three Sunday at one o'clock.
That's what I need to follow up on Coach. At
the pregame show Monday, we were talking about some of
the new food at Pete Biden Field of Bob Bennett Stadium.
(27:33):
As I remind everybody to here at Crowing Wolf tonight,
we have Basil Bloom and some great pizza in one
food truck and soft Up Barbecue.
Speaker 4 (27:39):
And the other.
Speaker 2 (27:40):
Come hang out with us here till seven o'clock and
then karaoke starts at seven, So you might want to
just hang out here all night, Crowing Wolf off of
hern In At one sixty eight. I asked you if
if you had tried the new Fry Guy food truck,
and you said, if you did, garlic fries would be
your order.
Speaker 3 (27:55):
Did any garlic fries show up in the dugout Monday
for you?
Speaker 4 (27:58):
No? And that's probably a good thing. We've had enough
food around. I think I ate enough as these games,
in these late games. So if anybody actually took that serious,
I'm sure there's somebody that could use them more than
me at that time. But you could smell it in
the park too, and it smells great.
Speaker 2 (28:15):
We sampled the garlic fries in the booth the other
night with Brian Marsubian and Rick Limbo, and even one
of your old coaches, Pat Ware, showed up.
Speaker 3 (28:24):
And had a few of those garlic fries with us.
Speaker 2 (28:26):
You've got a couple of diamond dogs who just showed
up here, Caden Munster and Sky Collins, two local guys
Clovis West Buchanan High, Fresno City.
Speaker 3 (28:36):
I can give people their numbers.
Speaker 2 (28:38):
Cayden was four for fourteen this weekend, couple doubles, couple ribbies.
Sky was four for twelve on base percentage of four
sixty seven, made ever play in center field. But there's
a lot more to those two guys than those numbers.
So why don't you share what you appreciate about one
of the older guys on your team, a senior in Sky,
and one of the younger guys, a red shirt freshman
(28:59):
in cad I.
Speaker 4 (29:01):
Think, well, the first point to these two guys that
I as we talked about having all the local guys
that maybe I'd forget sometimes we invited a Golden Eagle
and a Buchanan Bear together, these guys a couple of
years apart. But sometimes that doesn't go over too well
with the Clovis Westerns and the Buchanans. But with these
(29:24):
two guys, both of them have something a little bit
more of the player side of me that I am
extremely jealous of and that they have. The first one
being the sky. I'd just like to run to first
base one time like that. I mean a lot more
than one, but at least once. I think I would
have had a lot more hits if I could have
(29:44):
ran somewhat close to that. So, I mean, Scott with
the dynamics of his speed and athleticism is something that
is not I mean, that's at a whole other level
that you don't see much in college baseball, that type
of speed that that's gonna play a big part in
our offense this year, especially really I mean hitting him
hitting them ninth, so hopefully you know he's on in
(30:07):
front of the guys that are going to do the
damage and hopefully get Eddie and Murph some more fastballs.
With that speed on there and a ball in the
dirt he's gonna get. And the piece with with Munster here,
the ability to hit with no batting gloves. Really jealous
of that. I would have loved to have done that
my hands. I got really sweaty hands. It just didn't work.
(30:27):
So I tell much all the time how jealous I
am that he gets to hit with no batting gloves.
And he's a guy that probably one of the best,
One of the top compliments you can give somebody is
you feel they were born to hit. Cayden was born
to hit. And especially your first Division one at bat,
run around second, two outs line went through the sixth
(30:48):
hole for an RBI single year first at bat. That
was a mature, veteran approach a bat that that wasn't
an accident, and that's gonna be He's gonna have a
lot of big hits in his career and hit for
a long time. So both those guys have some pieces
to how they play that I'm pretty jealous of.
Speaker 2 (31:06):
I can identify with some of those sentiments for sure.
And you said something there that made a note in
my mind when you said part of having Sky in
the ninth spot, hopefully he's on so guys like Eddie
and murfh get more fastballs. Were you at all surprised
by how many fastballs Murph actually saw on opening weekend
from BYU?
Speaker 4 (31:27):
Yeah, I mean, I mean they did a good job
of coming at him and and not backing down, you know,
and kind of especially moving the fastball around. Then even
the bad and the it was at the sixth inning,
seventh inning when Stransky let off with the single and
then Eddie put down a bunt to move him on
his own. And I've talked to Eddie about that, hitting
in front of a month in front of Murph, that
(31:49):
there may be some times you need to make sure
you hit because then he puts a bunt down, moves
him over, and now now he Eddie hasn't hit, Now
Murph hasn't hit, and their two of our best hitters
have gone through the lineup and not had a chance
to swing the bat. But yeah, they came right at
them with some fastballs there, you know. I Murph did
a good job foulling them off and eventually working the walk.
Speaker 2 (32:10):
He did, and I'm sure bigger things are coming this
weekend from Murph Gray and the Diamond Dogs against cal
State Fullerton six oh five, the first pitch Friday night.
Speaker 3 (32:18):
We're here at Crowing Wolf till seven. It's starting to
fill up.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
Karaoke will start at seven, so bring your best singing voice,
get some pizzas, some barbecue in the parking lot, and
hang out inside. I want to get those guys on
and pick their brains a little bit. But maybe give
fans your number one thing you're looking forward to this
weekend with the Titans coming to the valley.
Speaker 4 (32:40):
Yeah, I mean, like I talked about before, I mean
renewing a great rivalry and with the Titans and Bulldogs
have been over the years, and you know, especially to
talk to guys that played on those late eighties early
nineties teams, that there were some actual not only fighting
baseball fighting, some real fighting going on back and forth
in all those years in competitions and regionals and and
(33:02):
that stuff. So that piece of it will be fun.
But then also just I mean, obviously that's those guys
aren't playing this game, so but our guys are bouncing
back after that, winning the first two against b y
U and then letting one get away from us on
on Monday. I know they're gonna be excited to get
back out there, and obviously anchors set the set the
tone force with the weekend on the mound, and obviously
(33:25):
fill some roles in the bullpen and keep getting some
of those guys out there, and keep keep learning ourselves
as an offense too. You know, even though there is
a lot of there's some experience in there, but there's
some age and some you know some but some haven't
all been together yet. So how the how the lineup
is gonna work together and kind of what those roles
(33:45):
and pieces are gonna be, We're gonna keep figuring out
and it's gonna be really fun to do it against
a really talented and well coached Fullarton team and carrying
it into the next two weekends on the road against
two top twenty five teams.
Speaker 3 (33:58):
Quite a gauntlet.
Speaker 2 (33:59):
The Bulldogs are opening the season with but your Diamond
Dogs at home Friday six oh five against cal State Fullerton.
Speaker 4 (34:04):
We want to see you there.
Speaker 2 (34:05):
One last question, coach, you said you were envious of
Sky Collin's speed and Cayden Munster's ability to swing without
batting gloves.
Speaker 3 (34:11):
How about those boots that Sky walked in with you?
Speaker 4 (34:14):
Jealous of those two? The boots aren't really that's not
really my area. That's these Clovist kids though they like.
These Clovist kids really like the boots.
Speaker 2 (34:23):
It's a he might be getting ready for karaoke, maybe
little country flavor.
Speaker 4 (34:27):
I'm sure they got a way better answer on that
than I do, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (34:31):
Well, we'll get those answers from those young men when
we come back. A couple of your diamond dogs, Cayden
Munster and Sky Collins, join us when we come back.
Speaker 3 (34:38):
Thank you, coach, see you Friday.
Speaker 4 (34:39):
All right.

Speaker 3 (38:08):
Here till seven o'clock.
Speaker 2 (38:09):
The Diamond Dogs open up another home series Friday night
against cal State Fullerton the Titans here for three games
Friday at six, Saturday at three, Sunday at one. You've
heard from Coach Ryan Overland. Now we hear from a
couple of his players from right here in the valley.
The senior from Buchanan Hives spent a couple of years
with the Rams at Fresno City, Sky Collins and the
red shirt freshman from Clovis West Caden Munster and Coach
(38:32):
Overland sounded like he didn't realize till he saw you
two here that there's a little high school rivalry involved
here in general. Sky as a Buchanan Bear, how do
you feel about those Golden Eagles.
Speaker 17 (38:42):
I mean, it wasn't it wasn't really a rivalry for
Buchanan because we won almost every time we played them,
So it's kind of I don't know, Munchha might have
something to say about that, But during my time there,
it was its kind of one sided.
Speaker 3 (39:00):
They didn't really have to deal with you, did they kid? No, No,
Sky was there.
Speaker 22 (39:05):
Yeah, I was still young and but at the same time,
though I did not really like the Bears.
Speaker 20 (39:10):
Always find a way to lose against them.
Speaker 22 (39:12):
Is not a great time when you ever had that
three game series against the Bears.
Speaker 2 (39:17):
You know, you know, I introduced you Sky as a
senior and Kayden you as a red shirt freshman. For
both of you, this last weekend was really the first
weekend in your college careers where you knew you were
going to be playing because Skuy, you were with the
team last year, didn't get any abs, so the conference
tournament come up with you know, you could have just
quit right there. One ab bat in a thousand helped
(39:38):
the team win the tournament, but now you get to
play center field and start as a senior. So for
both of you guys, this last weekend was kind of
a new deal. What was it like to go out
there at Pete Biden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium and
play in front of the red wing.
Speaker 19 (39:51):
It was awesome that first game. Nothing like that feeling.
Speaker 17 (39:56):
Nothing can match that feeling of your first start, going
out there playing from the fans, just showing out, trying
to trying to win a game for the Dogs. How
about you, kid, It was definitely a dream come true
coming to this game.
Speaker 22 (40:11):
As a kid, you always think that one day you
put on a dog's jersey, you go out there and
fight for him, and that dream came true for once
in a while. A little bit of a long journey
to get there, but once we got there, like almost
cried during the national anthem just because emotions were high.
Speaker 20 (40:29):
But it was all good.
Speaker 22 (40:30):
When you hear all the fans just start going and especially
my family there with me too, it's a great time.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
And when you say long journey for people who don't
know you were planning to have that debut be they
started last year but had a little injury that cost
you all of last year. Do you see anything now
as you finally are playing and playing well and hitting
some balls really hard, that there's little silver linings everything
you went through last year and some benefits that have
come out of them.
Speaker 22 (40:59):
No, I mean, you don't want to come in and
be a freshman and be hurt for the whole year.
Speaker 20 (41:04):
But at the end of the day, you know what.
Speaker 22 (41:07):
It's God's journey, God's journey for you. So definitely was
a little bit of a hardship. But at the end
of the day, everything happens for a reason, and definitely
you can see it now.
Speaker 2 (41:19):
We'll come back to the bare handed thing because coach
Oberlin was pretty jealous of that, and Sky said he
was jealous of your speed. How old were you when
you realize that you were faster than the average bear,
even the average Buchanan Bear.
Speaker 17 (41:31):
I think ever since to your ball, I just I
hit the ball. I think I got an inside the
park home run almost every time when I was playing
to your ball.
Speaker 19 (41:40):
So I knew ever since I was I.
Speaker 17 (41:45):
Was a young guy, that I was faster than a
lot of a lot of my peers.
Speaker 2 (41:49):
So yeah, Kaiten, have you ever had an inside the
park home run and t ball.
Speaker 22 (41:55):
Uh yeah, because I always made through. My coach hit
me last so I can get the home run.
Speaker 3 (42:02):
Now you almost had a triple in your first game.
Speaker 22 (42:06):
Yeah, Sky, Why does he look like he doesn't want
to talk about that?
Speaker 19 (42:12):
I think it was I think it was a good
good said.
Speaker 22 (42:15):
That was probably the first time I've got waved around
second base about four years, so it's more of a
shock factor for sure.
Speaker 3 (42:23):
When you saw Richie Pricey, Yeah, I really want you
to come.
Speaker 22 (42:25):
To Okay, all right, I try to turn it on,
but the wagon caught on really fast, and guy made
a great play out there.
Speaker 20 (42:33):
Gotta gotta give it to him. But somehow I got
to get there.
Speaker 3 (42:38):
That remote control for the trailer hitch just wasn't working.
Speaker 20 (42:41):
No, not at all.
Speaker 2 (42:42):
I know the feeling, my friend, It's all good. Cayden
Munster Sky collins with us here. And there's a question
that came in on Twitter. It's not really a baseball question,
but it would be intriguing to get your guys' answers
to this. It's been a popular question over the years,
and who knows, maybe it has a connection to those
slick boots you walk and with Sky, but it says,
(43:03):
what would you rather fight? Here are your three choices?
Not a cal state fulletin tight and those brawls are
in the past.
Speaker 4 (43:09):
We don't want to see that this weekd.
Speaker 2 (43:11):
Kangaroo, an Ostrich or an alligator? Which one would you
rather fight?
Speaker 3 (43:18):
And why?
Speaker 4 (43:19):
Who wants to go first?
Speaker 20 (43:21):
I didn't go first? All right, I'm not going Ostrich
for sure. The slowest guy on the team. Can't beat
an Ostrich in a race.
Speaker 4 (43:29):
All right.
Speaker 22 (43:31):
Crocodiles and Nogo just for I think they're the meanest
one on there, and I think I gotta go Kangaroo.
Speaker 20 (43:38):
I don't know why, all right, So I feeling I
have the best chance of the kangaroo.
Speaker 3 (43:42):
What would be your game plan against the kangaroo?
Speaker 20 (43:45):
Uh, I don't know, honestly. Maybe taking to the ground.
Speaker 22 (43:49):
Honestly, I feel like he gets any way of kicking
me that I'm done for, to kind of get his
legs out of it.
Speaker 4 (43:55):
All right.
Speaker 2 (43:57):
He had a pretty well thought out answer there. Those
aren't Ostrich skin boots, are they?
Speaker 4 (44:01):
Guy?
Speaker 17 (44:01):
No, they're I don't know what they are, but I
would I think i'd go with the Ostrich.
Speaker 3 (44:08):
Yeah, yeah, I think I'm.
Speaker 17 (44:09):
Just grabbing it by its skinny little neck, getting on top.
Speaker 19 (44:13):
Of it and hoping for the best. All right, I
could stay on that.
Speaker 3 (44:19):
And you think you could catch up to it, you know,
on the run.
Speaker 19 (44:22):
Oh maybe not, but once I get it, not letting it.
Speaker 3 (44:26):
Go, and maybe you could. Who knows. Did you guys
get some food from the food trucks today?
Speaker 20 (44:31):
Yeah, we got some try chip sandwiches.
Speaker 3 (44:33):
Oh that sounds good. Oh yeah, sau Stuff Barbecue is
here tonight.
Speaker 2 (44:36):

Hey, Hey, welcome back to the Bulldog Baseball Hour. Here
at Crow and Wolf in Clovis right off for Hernon
at one sixty eight. Got another ten twelve minutes to
talk Diamond Dog baseball.
Speaker 3 (48:10):
We'll talk a lot of it this weekend.
Speaker 2 (48:11):
Six o'clock first pitch Friday night, three o'clock Saturday, at
one o'clock Sunday against the Titans of cal State Fullerton.
Boy was at a huge series back in the day,
and these are three important games for both teams this year.
We've got a couple local guys who've been starting for
the Diamond Dogs, centerfielder Sky Collins and first baseman Caden Munster.
Speaker 3 (48:31):
And I was gonna say, Munch, I'm just gonna call
you munch. How long have they been calling you munch
munch uh?
Speaker 20 (48:38):
Since about six years old?
Speaker 22 (48:40):
Okay, Yeah, it's to the point where my mom even
calls me much.
Speaker 20 (48:45):
And if I get called Caid and I know something's wrong.
Speaker 2 (48:48):
Uh huh, Yeah, it's It's an affectionate nickname for sure.
Speaker 3 (48:54):
And you munched on a.
Speaker 2 (48:55):
Few pitches this weekend at Pete Bidenfield at Bob Bennett Stadium.
A couple balls you almost out of the yard, but
your first tick Coach over them was just talking about
it was one of those situational swings, a two out
RBI by going the other way? Did What was that
moment like for you to get your first hit on
the diamond that you dreamed about playing on?
Speaker 22 (49:15):
It was awesome, you know, I mean, first game of
the year and first game with collegiate career. Definitely had
some jitters and try to go up there with a
clear mindset, clear approach, just kind of wherever it was,
kind of go with it. And with the shift I
had on, I had a good opportunity to get a
hit through the sixth hole, got the pitch I can
(49:36):
do it with, and got it done.
Speaker 3 (49:39):
Yes, you did without batting gloves. Have you ever tried
wearing batting gloves?
Speaker 4 (49:43):
Yeah?
Speaker 22 (49:43):
So when I was younger, I had batting gloves, but
I would always rip them like it would be two
weeks going to Dick's every two weeks, and then one
week they're just like, hey, you know what.
Speaker 20 (49:54):
Let's try to know batting gloves.
Speaker 22 (49:56):
And I went probably four for seven with like four
homers that tournament that I was at, and it's stuck
ever since.
Speaker 2 (50:04):
Yeah, I don't think i'd ever wear batting gloves again
either if I did that, and it was kind on
the budget apparently too. Absolutely, Sky, when's the last time
you hit without batting gloves?
Speaker 19 (50:14):
Never? I can't hit without batting gloves. I get. I
get a callous even with batting gloves.
Speaker 4 (50:19):
I see it.
Speaker 17 (50:19):
Yeah, I mean, yeah, I gotta wear batting gloves. Wrap
the strap around my hand. Yeah, I got soft hands.
Speaker 2 (50:28):
I never wore batting gloves in high school, and I
had taluses like you have one with the batting glove.
But what was funny was the day I hit my
first home run in high school. I was reminded of
this the other day because I look back. They had
a photo of me in the newspaper and I had
a bandage wrapped around my hand because of the kalus
from not wearing batting gloves. I respect both of your
approaches and I certainly respect the results, and I know
(50:51):
I'm gonna feel old when I hear the answers to
these questions. But maybe our listeners and fans here at
Crown Wolf would like to know what your guy earliest
Diamond Dog memories are.
Speaker 3 (51:03):
Do you remember the first time you went to.
Speaker 2 (51:04):
Pete biden field of Bob Bennett Stadium, or the first
time he got exposed to Fresno State baseball.
Speaker 12 (51:11):
Man?
Speaker 20 (51:12):
Six seven years old?
Speaker 22 (51:14):
Uh huh, young, very young, and definitely fell in love
with it because mister.
Speaker 3 (51:18):
Perkins, it's about Perkins.
Speaker 22 (51:20):
Yeah, he was out there, he got the crowd going,
and I was just a baseball loving six year old
and once I saw that, saw the red wave going,
it just made me want to be a Bulldog even more.
Speaker 3 (51:35):
Was there a player you watched that you got excited
about cheering for?
Speaker 22 (51:39):
Honestly, I don't remember, but I do remember the Judge
days for sure.
Speaker 2 (51:47):
Oh that guy, Yeah, he's all right, Just that Aaron Judge,
guy who's won two American League MVPs. How about it
for youse guy, what's the earliest you can remember checking
out the Diamond Dogs.
Speaker 17 (51:58):
I think it's when we won the College World series
in two thousand and eight. I got a poster in
my room when I was a kid, and I don't
really know anything about the Diamond Dogs, but when I
saw that, kind of put things into perspective, the history
behind the program and everything.
Speaker 19 (52:17):
As as I saw that, it was pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (52:22):
So that was almost seventeen years ago when they dog
piled in Omaha, So I kind of don't want to
hear it.
Speaker 3 (52:28):
But how old were you then?
Speaker 19 (52:30):
I was five years old.
Speaker 3 (52:31):
Uh huh, okay.
Speaker 2 (52:34):
Time flies, and it's amazing that something like that makes
an impression. Now here you are, almost seventeen years later,
starting in center field for the Bulldogs. You guys are
around your teammates every day, so you see a different
side of them. And I'm sure you've both also been
on teams that were really tight and teams that maybe
there were some chemistry issues or things didn't all click
(52:56):
all the time. It's early, only four games to your belt,
but I'm sure you're starting to form impressions about this
group of guys already.
Speaker 3 (53:05):
Much.
Speaker 2 (53:05):
What do you appreciate the most about these guys that
you share the clubhouse in the dugout.
Speaker 4 (53:10):
With Being.
Speaker 22 (53:13):
Pretty green to college baseball, pretty new. It's been nice
to have the older guys in the clubhouse kind of
put their shoulder arms around me, get with me every
single day work and just kind of let me mature
with them.
Speaker 20 (53:29):
And those people can.
Speaker 22 (53:31):
Go towards Eddie Saldafar, Murph Gray, Cooper Bergmann, Jack Ankor.
Speaker 20 (53:36):
I mean the list goes on.
Speaker 22 (53:38):
This clubhouse is full of great guys, great time for sure.
It's never a dull moment in there as well, and
I think we just had a lot of fun. That's
what's going to create a lot of success for us
this year.
Speaker 3 (53:49):
What do you appreciate specifically about Sky as a teammate.
Speaker 22 (53:53):
He tracks down everything in center field. I've never seen
a person do that more. It's insane. I mean even
in the inner squads in the fall, you see the
Sky just full extension dive sprinting into the wall. I mean,
nothing really scares the guy at all, and he just
goes after it every day, works hard and creates a
(54:14):
big difference for us for sure.
Speaker 2 (54:18):
This Sky is there a player in the big leagues
that you really enjoy his game and.
Speaker 3 (54:23):
You say, man, I want to play like that guy.
Speaker 19 (54:26):
It's not an.
Speaker 17 (54:26):
Outfielder, but I like watching Trey Turner. I like watching
how smooth he is running the bases, smooth swing, stealing bases,
and I mean, I know he's not an outfielder, but
I like the way he plays the game and his
approach at the plate.
Speaker 2 (54:43):
He probably could be an outfielder if he wanted to
usually for sure. And for you, for Munch as a teammate,
what are the things that you get a kick out
of watching or that you just appreciate about who he is.
Speaker 17 (54:58):
I mean, I love watching him too, BP hitting balls
over the weight room, some of the farthest balls I've
ever seen it. And then even off the field, just
always supporting his teammates, always lifting them up, just being
a good teammate on on and off the field.
Speaker 2 (55:19):
So yeah, well it's always telling to hear you guys
talk about each other. And I want to ask you
about another guy on your team that everybody wants to
talk about, Murph Gray, because he's a preseason All American,
you know, dominated the Cape Codlet.
Speaker 3 (55:37):
A lot of SEC schools and other programs.
Speaker 2 (55:39):
We're trying to whisper in his ear, say hey, come
play for us, and he said, no, I want to
be a bulldog. When you hear something like that, what
does that do for you guys, and maybe show us
who you see Murph as that maybe the outside diamond
dog fan doesn't see.
Speaker 17 (55:57):
I just think it shows a loyalty he has to
this program and how over in the coaching staff, how
they've shaped him into a loyal, a loyal person, and
to how although they see bigger schools probably offer way
more money. It shows what type of person he is
(56:18):
and what type of program.
Speaker 3 (56:21):
For as I say it is for sure, what do
you think much?
Speaker 20 (56:25):
Honestly, Murph Gray.
Speaker 22 (56:27):
Is one of the best guys that I know, and
knowing the integrity that he has, I knew that he
wouldn't go down in that route that this college baseball
world has gone to, for sure, and I mean, big
homebody for sure, So kind of hard to go away
from that. But it also just gives us like confidence too,
because if a guy like that can be in this
(56:49):
program and we're playing with him, that.
Speaker 20 (56:52):
That steps up our game as well, because we got
to play to his level.
Speaker 2 (56:56):
And he has fun playing of the game, and I
see a lot of you guys having fun. And when
you have moments to celebrate, you celebrate but one thing
it seems like to me from the outside anyway, that
you know, people want to make the Aaron Judge comparison.
Speaker 3 (57:09):
It's just inevitable. It's gonna happen. To me.
Speaker 2 (57:12):
The parallel to Aaron Judge that I value the most
is that he stayed really humble no matter how far
he hits a baseballer, no matter how highly the scouts.
Speaker 4 (57:20):
Think of him.
Speaker 3 (57:21):
Oh yeah, you guys see that too.
Speaker 17 (57:23):
Sure he can hit a ball four feet and he's
just head down around the bases like he's done it before,
which he has.
Speaker 3 (57:32):
What are you guys most looking forward to this weekend?
Speaker 14 (57:38):
Uh?
Speaker 20 (57:39):
Just a rivalry, you know.
Speaker 22 (57:40):
I mean there's a lot of history between these two programs,
and it's a big series for us too, to kind
of kickstart our year.
Speaker 20 (57:46):
So if we can go win three games would be huge.
Speaker 3 (57:50):
How about you, mister Collins.
Speaker 17 (57:52):
Yep, same thing, the rivalry. Excited to see another another series,
see Jack Growl a mound, Murph Gray Munch hit some
bombs hopefully.
Speaker 19 (58:06):
So yeah, excited for all.
Speaker 3 (58:08):
That, I think he said plural there much you all
right with them?
Speaker 22 (58:12):
All I know is it's a little bit hotter this weekend,
So It's a good good sign for sure for everyone
to hit bombs, even Scott. You put one, put a
charge into one the other day too.
Speaker 4 (58:23):
Huh.
Speaker 20 (58:24):
Scott might be a fast guy, but man's got some
pop too.
Speaker 3 (58:27):
He's got a lot of quick twitch.
Speaker 22 (58:28):
Oh yeah, insanely quick twitch. That guy embarrassed me in
the weight room. You got this force plate huh or
jumping metrics. Yeah, and man flies through the weight room
and I can barely get off the ground.
Speaker 20 (58:41):
So big difference for sure.
Speaker 3 (58:43):
What do you think You're vertical?
Speaker 4 (58:44):
Is a guy?
Speaker 19 (58:47):
I say, like thirty six?
Speaker 3 (58:49):
Probably so you can throw down a couple of dunks.
Speaker 17 (58:51):
Yeah, yeah, that's my first love basketball.
Speaker 2 (58:55):
Well, we'll have to talk more about that next time,
but we're out of time for tonight. Guys, thanks for
hanging out here and go get them Friday night. Sky
Collins Caden Munster from the Diamond Dogs. They host the
Titan six o'clock Friday, be there and thanks for listening
