Speaker 1 (00:00):
Coming up. On this edition of The Buzz, we got
the chance to sit down and speak with Joel Richardson,
the owner of Sol Joel's, and find out why his
club stands out above the rest of many comedy clubs
and banded into. Plus find out who's going to be
coming to the sunny Brook Ballroom throughout the rest of
the season. I'm Novelle jay Lee and the Buzz and
Buzzworthy Radio starts now the Buzz.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Buzz Buzz is on.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
The Buzz is on the show.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
That gets you up close and personal with some of
the hottest stars. Now here's your host, Novelle Jaylee.

Speaker 4 (00:34):
Daily. What's going on, guys.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
It's Novelle jay Lee with the Buzz at Buzzworthy Radio
on location here at Soul Joe's in sunny Brook, Pottstown, Pennsylvania.
I'm so excited because I've never had this band on
my show before, and we've known each other for quite
some time. I think twenty two was, yeah, the first time,
and I was telling a lot of people back there,

(01:00):
the reason you came into my orbit was because of
Jim Brewer. That's right, Jim Brewer was the reason I
met this man.

Speaker 4 (01:07):
With me right now.

Speaker 5 (01:07):
Joel Richardson, thanks for having me on.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
It's long overdue.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
It has been long over We've been talking about this
for ever, yeah, literally forever, and we finally decided to
just be like, are you coming today, I'm doing this now?

Speaker 4 (01:21):
Yes.

Speaker 6 (01:22):
Yeah, Because normally I'm running multiple shows, You're running from
one show to the next, and you were able to
carve out some time.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
So I'm for saying what we're doing you specifically. I
mean I started coming here more and more and more
as time went on because you put on such a
great product all the time that we're here. Aside from
the fact that Jim Brewer was the first show I've
actually got to see.

Speaker 4 (01:49):
Adam Carolla was another.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
Instance why I feel like Soul Joals is really the
place for everybody. I was reading one of the reviews
that you had posted on Instagram, I believe it was yesterday,
and the comment literally was saying, like everybody is welcome
and accepted here. It was in that vein yeah, where
it's just like there's no politics driven, there's no nothing

(02:14):
like this here, none of that stuff. Everybody is just here.
We're having a great time and enjoying each other. And
I sat there and I smiled. I was like, you know,
Adam Gorilla Show was like that because I met so
many people from that show alone and we were hanging
out at the bar, and it was just so cool
to see that. It's just like fumans just interact with

(02:34):
each other and having a great time.

Speaker 6 (02:37):
We might get a certain voice, whether it's left or right,
but a lot of the fans just come out. I
don't book one type of talent, and we try to
book as many diverse acts as we can. But last
weekend in particular, we had people from seven different states,
which is crazy.

Speaker 5 (02:56):
So I'm like, how do we get people across the school.

Speaker 4 (02:58):
River from there?

Speaker 6 (03:00):
They're calling me up and like, hey, what air mine?
I mean, what airport should I fly into? Like that's
a Google answer, you know what I mean. But I'm
I'm I'm the one that answers the phone. I'm one
that emails people back and very hands on owner. And
I think that's why, you know, some people say like, hey,
you should open up another venue. I go, it's it's
impossible to clone myself. I'm working on just making this great.

(03:21):
And last weekend alone, we had adults with special needs
and I have a dance here, people from the left,
people from the right. But then also because we don't
have a minimum, you you can drink if you want,
or you know, go visit our restaurant, bring them into
the show. But there's no service, no check spots, no minimums.

Speaker 3 (03:38):
We have.

Speaker 6 (03:38):
We have adults in recovery that come here because it's
not being shoved down your throat and they feel accepted
because they're not feeling pressured to order something. They might
get some soda or some you know, a bottle of
water or something like that. But it's just like a
movie theater or you know, a black box theater where
you know, you come into to the event and you're
just bringing anything in with you, but there's no eating

(03:59):
and drinking during the show. You know, if you have
a drink in your hand, it's fine.

Speaker 4 (04:04):
How did soldiols come to life?

Speaker 3 (04:08):
So I was at a great question.

Speaker 6 (04:09):
I was doing shows locally at the Valley Forge Casino,
and I've been there for seven years. I knew the
old owners that sold it to Boyd Entertainment that I
have casinos across the country, and in fact, locally they
built the Brigada down in Atlantic City, and then so
when they took over.

Speaker 5 (04:28):
It took about a year. But they it's usually.

Speaker 6 (04:31):
When they come in or someone else by, you know,
they in with the new at with the old, right,
So they didn't get rid of me.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
They wanted to move me.

Speaker 6 (04:38):
From Fridays to Thursdays and I said, you know, I'm
not doing that. I already built this following on a Friday.
So I that forced me to open up Soldoals, and
thank goodness I did, because I would have been dead
there during the pandemic.

Speaker 5 (04:52):
And we were able to stunted and we were able.

Speaker 6 (04:54):
To do shows outside where we're at, and that really projected.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
I mean, everyone has a story to tell.

Speaker 6 (05:01):
Everyone has a moment that you know they can turn
back and be like, that's the what really canapuled me
to the next level, And for me, it was COVID
and being too stupid to quit and just you know,
opening up sol Joels four months before the pandemic. I go, listen,
this is this is my time to go. We're gonna
do this and everyone's sitting at home. It gave audience

(05:24):
members something to look forward to. It gave comics a
reason to come out and feel purpose and that it's
a very powerful thing. I've been saying that a lot lately.
People need a purpose in life, and I feel like
Soul Joels does that not only for our staff, but
also as an event space. It gives people to look
forward to because ever since COVID, there's a lot of

(05:44):
less social interactions.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
You know, bars are not open, is like, there's not.

Speaker 6 (05:48):
People aren't meeting people the way they used to, and
there needs to be events for all those, you know,
those social needs and a part of our society.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
It's interesting that you said that because going back to
the part where I said that, the first show I
saw was Jim Brewer and that was during the summer
twenty two where it was everybody was slowly coming back
out of staying indoors because of COVID, and that was
one of the things where it one. I loved Jim Brewer,
so if you're listening Jim Brewer, I freaking love you.

Speaker 3 (06:19):
But he's great.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
But it was it was that show that pretty much
literally said wow, because I used to just go to clubs,
used to watch comedy acts, whatever have you, and seeing
this happen, especially when it was outside, that dome literally
was filled with it was filled that's not even exaggeration.

Speaker 4 (06:40):
I don't think there was an empty seat.

Speaker 6 (06:42):
There wasn't And Jim Brewer, it's always people because you're
outside and we were happen to be in between the
School River and the Reading Railroad. It was a freight
train and because there I remember that, yes, And because
it was a freight train, there's no public schedule, so
you're either getting zero trains or we're getting seven.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
Trains during the middle of the show.

Speaker 5 (07:05):
And the audience it was almost like something.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
To look forward to it.

Speaker 6 (07:08):
They're like, let's see what this comic spin on it
is and how they riff off it. And you know
a lot of comics were like, oh, because it's during
the pandemic, I'm doing new material. I'll take the sip
of water and take a five minute break while this
train passes.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
But Jim brew was the one.

Speaker 6 (07:23):
That when he heard that first time, he came back
for the second time. It was his first show of
the weekend. He did two Friday, two Saturday, two Sunday.
Sold out everyone that first Friday night. He turned the
train into a tourist attraction. Okay, and remember we had

(07:44):
the signs on the back and there was one that
was empty or was open. Yes, So he stuck his
head out like he's a conductor, and he said, coming
up on the left.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
Hand side is sold to old comedy club.

Speaker 6 (07:55):
He goes, they came outside during the pandemic and we're
not sure when they're coming back in. That that's about right,
And the audience just erupted because you could tell he
hadn't thought of that. It was just something that sparked,
like right when it happened, and he was in the moment.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
And that's what I love about Jim.

Speaker 6 (08:14):
He would be talking about one show it might not
even been that one where he was talking about Chinese food.

Speaker 3 (08:21):
That happened he never go back to.

Speaker 6 (08:23):
Forty five minutes later, he goes, so my wife and
I ordered Chinese food.

Speaker 5 (08:27):
People like what, They're like, we didn't even remember that joke?

Speaker 4 (08:31):
Was it that? Like? Did we talk about this? I
think we did, Yeah, thirty five minutes ago.

Speaker 5 (08:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (08:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (08:38):
One thing led to another in add and that's how
we got here. Dude.

Speaker 4 (08:42):
That was insane.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
For one, I wasn't even going to buy a ticket
to that show, and I just did it on a whim.

Speaker 4 (08:51):
I said, you know what birthday President?

Speaker 1 (08:53):
I want to do it because it was literally it
was literally a week after my birthday.

Speaker 4 (08:58):
So I was like, you know what, favorite comic never
been there before. Treat yourself. So I did, and I'm
so glad that I did.

Speaker 1 (09:05):
And just seeing everybody, like I said, it was sold out,
everybody got out of the house, and everybody had a
good time. It was something that was missing when COVID
was going on because we we literally kept to ourselves. Yeah,
we weren't anywhere, so to be outside, to be around
other humans and interacting with them, and then watching this
guy on stage literally making us laugh our ass off

(09:30):
for a good stylid ninety minutes, it was the best.

Speaker 4 (09:33):
It was the best time of my life.

Speaker 3 (09:35):
And I'm glad you said what you did.

Speaker 6 (09:37):
It's this isn't something that I promoted and mentioned a
lot because it's a very touchy with the way society is.
But you said you treated yourself, You came by yourself,
and oftentimes you do. And I take pride in that
because there's a lot of females as well, male and female,
that they just see an event, they don't have anyone
for whatever scheduling, They don't tell anybody to come with them.

(10:00):
We've created such a safe space you have that people
feel comfortable enough coming here and coming to the event
because whatever, whether it's Jim Brew or Adam Carolla or
you know, Maurice Bernard, that they come by themselves. And
I can't tell you how great that makes my staff feel.
They us feel that, you know, people feel that they
can come here.

Speaker 4 (10:19):
Your staff is great.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
Like it's it's funny whenever I walk in, they just
see my face and go like, hey.

Speaker 4 (10:24):
You're here again. This is Jay.

Speaker 3 (10:29):
But you're the one that wore my shirt that was
so perfect. I know you'll think of everything.

Speaker 4 (10:33):
I know I did, didn't. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (10:36):
When I came here, literally they went, yeah, you made it.
I was like, yeah, I know on time because the
last time THOUGH was here it was ten minutes left
of the show. But y'all still took me in.

Speaker 6 (10:49):
Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, y'allutes watching that door.

Speaker 4 (10:54):
I know, yeah he's still coming. Is he still making
I didn't want to bring that up.

Speaker 3 (10:57):
I'm glad you did.

Speaker 6 (10:58):
I was like, yeah, you made it this time and
last time you almost didn't.

Speaker 4 (11:01):
No, no, you can. I can bring that up all day.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
Everyone knows I'm late to everything except weddings because it's
the girls today and I don't want to piss the
woman off.

Speaker 4 (11:11):
So I'm always going to be on time for a wedding,
except for one night I was very late too.

Speaker 1 (11:17):
Oh boy, well that was partly my fault, but not
my fault because traffic to Ocean City was awful.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
Yeah, shore traffic.

Speaker 4 (11:27):
It was shore traffic.

Speaker 1 (11:28):
So that's why I missed the wedding part, but made
it in time for the reception. So I was like,
so I was here for the important thing, priorities. But yeah,
it's just you come here enough. Yes, the staff gets
to know you. But I think the other part of
it was you meet new people here. If you come
by yourself. No one pretty much sidelines you, if that's

(11:52):
the best way of saying, because they don't. Even with
Adam and Adam Carolla was doing jokes that God forbid
if we if we were round the clock, maybe I'm
gonna be generous ten years ago, okay, those jokes and
none of us would have found offensive, right, you know, because.

Speaker 4 (12:09):
We grew up with it.

Speaker 1 (12:10):
We're of that age that we watched this stuff from
the eighties, even before then eighties up until now.

Speaker 4 (12:16):
This is what we're used to.

Speaker 1 (12:17):
This is what we're accustomed to, and it's like, this
is what we find funny. But yet, now if you
heard those jokes, they would say, cancel culture.

Speaker 4 (12:25):
We can't talk. We can't talk about this anymore.

Speaker 1 (12:28):
When he said those jokes, everybody was looking at me
going like, dude, you really are taking this like a boss.
And I'm going like, because I grew up with Richard Pryor,
I grew up with George Carlin, I grew up with
all of these comics that were able to push the ovelobe.
I've watched shows like All in the Family, the Jeffersons
that were pushing an envelope.

Speaker 4 (12:44):
This to me is funny. And when they see that,
they're going like, wow, you.

Speaker 1 (12:51):
Really love actual comedy. And I'm going like, yeah, it's
when it's funny, it's funny.

Speaker 3 (12:58):
Oh absolutely.

Speaker 1 (12:59):
And that's and that was the other thing as to
why I love coming here, because they see that, they
know that I don't get offended and we just have
a good time and then we just as the show ends,
we go to the bar.

Speaker 3 (13:10):
We've created a cheers here.

Speaker 4 (13:12):
I like to say that I've created a cheers. I
haven't had the foods yet though.

Speaker 6 (13:15):
Oh Michael, well, it's because a lot of times on
Sundays or other events and we used to be byob
but the restaurant's open Tuesday through Saturday, so I'll have
to treat you to dinner.

Speaker 4 (13:26):
I was told by the statu here that the foods gona.
I was like, are you biased?

Speaker 3 (13:31):
Yeah, based, I'm still working my way through the menu.

Speaker 6 (13:34):
So my brother in law, Scott Ready, who he's the
executive chef Gatsby's is his. He runs it and then
he does all the catering for our events. He was
the executive chef in the Navy Yard in South Philly.
When you go in, it's on the right hand side.
It used to be called bar Amese. It's called Gatehouse now.
But his restaurant was busy for six years. He was
the executive chef whenever there was concerts or sporting events

(13:56):
at the stadium. So he's used to getting people in
very quickly while still providing good food. And it's just
in and out. But but yeah, and he runs a
really tight ship. We've had people that come in and
do different things in the kitchen and they said they
service all the restaurants around here.

Speaker 3 (14:15):
They've never seen a cleaner.

Speaker 4 (14:16):
Kitchen really, which is really cool because you're.

Speaker 5 (14:18):
You're like, this guy doesn't have to say that, and.

Speaker 6 (14:20):
Uh, yeah, it's really really really really Uh it's it's
a compliment to our staff.

Speaker 1 (14:25):
You've grown, I don't want to say grown like that,
but you've grown with the talent that's been coming here
and that's about to come here, you know, Tony Danza
being one of them.

Speaker 3 (14:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (14:37):
Yeah, So that was one of the things where that's
a great story to bring up. Certain things come in
my feed and I keep an eye out on different
sort of talking to people like yourself to see who's
out there touring and who should we bring in. So
I reached out to Tony just just blindly, and I
get a phone call and I don't really google people

(14:57):
like I just have good energy and you know, it
off with someone.

Speaker 3 (15:02):
And I'm talking to his agent and.

Speaker 4 (15:03):
I have a story about that.

Speaker 7 (15:04):
After you get done that, good boy, So well edit
this in post. So his agent you could tell he's
original New Yorker, you know, you know, very well spoken.

Speaker 6 (15:16):
And uh he books Priscilla Presley. Yes, So he booked
Tony and then Priscilla, and then we had we're gonna
maybe been on the phone four or five times, and
he just stops and goes, you have no idea who
I am?

Speaker 1 (15:29):
Do you?

Speaker 3 (15:30):
And I go, oh boy.

Speaker 6 (15:32):
I was like, this is about to be something really
good or really bad. And he goes, I'm an original Dupree,
the group the Dupris.

Speaker 5 (15:40):
And I was like, wow, and I had them.

Speaker 6 (15:42):
This conversation was back in May. They performed here for
the first time in June. He goes, that group you
have coming in June is a tribute act at best.

Speaker 3 (15:52):
So what happened and that was him.

Speaker 6 (15:53):
Just what happened was one of the original the four members.
Every time one of them had passed away, he they
got replaced, and he was one I don't know, I
don't know if he you know, had a stroke or whatever,
but he's you know, he's eighty four years old and
it's a great guy. But he is now just an
agent and not not not performing anymore.

Speaker 3 (16:15):
So it was it was really cool.

Speaker 6 (16:16):
But I'm like, this is level of talent that's coming
in and like the original original you know, agents for
these guys, you know, So it's really cool.

Speaker 3 (16:26):
It's that that's how I'm doing it.

Speaker 6 (16:28):
Just reaching out and then because I bring in one person,
then the next person wants to come. And you know,
love it or not, but you know, Priscilla Presley is
bringing in rock and Roll Royalty, the only woman to
ever be married to Elvis right, which is Elvis never
performed here. But you know Bill Haley and Duke Gallington
and Louis Armstrong. So there's a lot of pride that

(16:48):
our team has and bringing this this building back to life.

Speaker 1 (16:52):
I like what you said about the good energy that
you put out there, and that's the story I want
to tell. But that's really how our friendship started. Is
because we didn't know each other for Adam and Eve
when we first met during the Jim Brewers show. But
it was just like we literally were laughing with each
other during Jim Brewer's show, Like there was just stuff
that he was doing and saying, but we just like

(17:13):
started looking at each other. We just started cracking up.
And that was really how the friendship blossomed. It's no,
it's not an exaggeration that it was literally because of
that show is how that happened.

Speaker 3 (17:26):
And the New Jersey connection and.

Speaker 1 (17:27):
The New Jersey connection, But it was it was really
watching him perform that caused us to be the level
of friendship that we are right now.

Speaker 4 (17:36):
So like, I give so much credit to that.

Speaker 3 (17:39):
Oh thank you. Yeah.

Speaker 6 (17:40):
Yeah, and now all the soap stars were bringing we
come to all those shows as well.

Speaker 1 (17:45):
My god man, I missed Jonathan Jackson the other day
because he was here on Tuesday. I had work, so
I didn't get to see him. But just the idea
that you were bringing more of the soap talent. And
there was a few people in the audience today that
actually asked me.

Speaker 4 (18:01):
I don't know why they would ask me this question.

Speaker 1 (18:03):
Why on earth would they think I know anything about
these soap stars.

Speaker 3 (18:09):
You have the your you're on the pulse, am.

Speaker 4 (18:13):
I yeah, but that's no joke.

Speaker 1 (18:16):
But no, they were literally asking me, do you know
Joel is going to have any more soap stars coming here?
And I kind of said, well, Scott Reeves is going
to be here for in September, so I do know
about that. I know he meant you mentioned you wanted
to have more coming here.

Speaker 6 (18:31):
Yeah, Laura Wright and Chris McKenna are coming in November.

Speaker 4 (18:35):
I didn't know that part. Yeah is that new?

Speaker 3 (18:37):
Yeah, yeah, that's new.

Speaker 5 (18:38):
Okay, we just announced that a few weeks ago.

Speaker 4 (18:40):
Uh oh, I must amiss that.

Speaker 1 (18:42):
Yeah, how did I I am normally up to data
on this stuff.

Speaker 4 (18:48):
How did I not know this? Oh? Boy? Yeah?

Speaker 6 (18:50):
Yeah, and then that's one of the things there is
now I'm yeah, it's very hard to keep getting all
the information out there with algorithms. Yeah, and also with
the email blast and not trying to you know, be
too innundated with you know, overwhelming with our information. But
U but yeah, that's that's something that we're putting out there,

(19:11):
and those guys are all coming.

Speaker 5 (19:13):
Uh there was something else that what you had just
said I was.

Speaker 3 (19:15):
Gonna bring up. It came and it went.

Speaker 4 (19:21):
See that's what happens.

Speaker 1 (19:22):
We get into the moment and then it's just if
it's important, it comes back into the brain.

Speaker 4 (19:25):
Yeah. But Lauray Chris Kinna, that's that's a good one.

Speaker 1 (19:29):
I love those guys. They're amazing day players been has
been here.

Speaker 3 (19:33):
Yeah, they were great. They were here in May.

Speaker 4 (19:34):
Yeah, they're here in May.

Speaker 1 (19:35):
And Vanessa and Vanessa and and Rena So for Arena,
absolutely adorable. Funny story about that. I'm bringing this up too.
When the picture was taken with me, Rena and Vanessa.
I texted Vena's husband and I said, I'm here in

(19:57):
Soldials to see your wife.

Speaker 6 (20:00):
And I didn't put that together until after he had
left and his daughter was with him, and.

Speaker 1 (20:08):
His daughter was with him. He told me that and
he was like, you're there right now. I was like, yeah,
I'm literally sitting in my seat and here's them on
the stage. I sent them the picture of them on
the stage, and he was like, tell her you know me,
we're friends, and that we go blah blah blah blah,
go way back everything.

Speaker 4 (20:26):
You know.

Speaker 1 (20:26):
Yeah, because the first time I met him was when
he works on Revenge on IBC, And so when I
took the picture at the end, I just went, I
said the arena. I said, so I was told to
tell you that I know your husband, we're friends, blah
blah blah. And she was like, you know my husband?
How do you know my husband? And and Vanessa was like, oh,

(20:49):
so you know, and she said his name. Don't want
to say that for reasons, and she was.

Speaker 4 (20:56):
Like, how do you know him?

Speaker 1 (20:57):
And then I told her the story how we first met,
told her my name and everything. So we took the picture.
I texted I texted him and I said, here's a picture.
She literally stood there for a good solid two minutes.
She didn't believe that I knew him. She literally didn't
believe that.

Speaker 4 (21:13):
I knew him. And so I told him that.

Speaker 1 (21:16):
I said, you know, Brina didn't believe that we were
friends and we knew each other, and I said, in
the picture. And then he literally went to her and said,
that's my friend. That's my friend. He said that you
didn't believe that we knew each other, and he texted
me back and said, like, yeah, she was like complete
another shot.

Speaker 6 (21:35):
That's so funny, And I did remember what I was
gonna say is speaking of not believable, it's we just
had murph and practical jokers.

Speaker 4 (21:44):
Yes you did, and also with.

Speaker 6 (21:47):
Jonathan Jackson was here. They pulled me aside and said,
the vibe here is great, your staff is amazing. You
should know that this is one of our favorite venues
that we played.

Speaker 4 (21:57):
I am and so glad you said that going And it's.

Speaker 3 (21:59):
Just it's always so humbling.

Speaker 6 (22:01):
I'm like the amount of touring that these artists do
and they're at the top of the food chain, at
the top of their game on you know, Network TV,
and I'm paying them and already paid them. They don't
have to say anything. They don't have to say anything
they have to say, you know, God.

Speaker 3 (22:18):
Bless you, good night. They don't have to you know
what I mean.

Speaker 6 (22:20):
And they go out of their way to say, like,
you know, what you're doing here is special, and they
want to come back, and it's just it means a lot,
not only to me, but it's like my staff and
to welcome not only the audience members but the talent
and to have them come back is amazing. And that's
what we just did with you know, Maurice Bernard for
the second time. And I told him he was a

(22:41):
trailblazer for us because now that he came here, a
lot of the other stop stars want to come here
because of how much fun he had last year.

Speaker 1 (22:49):
He even said it today and that was the reason
why I said, I'm glad you said what you did
about them wanted to come back, because at the end
of the show he said to the audience that this
is probably the most fun audience that he's ever been
at with his touring, and even at the first event,
he and his wife both said, we definitely are coming

(23:12):
back here. And which was absolutely amazing. And then to
hear him saying this today that this was the most
fun audience that he's ever had during this entire thing,
it makes me so proud to hear that everybody wants
to come back and do more shows here. You have
Adam Carolla, We've talked about him. He's coming back as
well in the mall. There have been plenty of people

(23:34):
that have made multiple stops here and Ben Ben Bailey
was here and Cash Cab he was here. That was
another fun one. Patrick Warburton is actually going to be
here I think next weekend, which I'm going to miss
because I will be in San Diego for Comic Con.
But I would have loved to have been here for

(23:56):
his show because I have seen him in person and
in doing what he does, and he's a lot of fun.

Speaker 3 (24:01):
I heard that.

Speaker 1 (24:02):
I heard he's great, He's a lot His humor is
so deadpan it's amazing.

Speaker 6 (24:07):
Well, and that's what's funny about a lot of the
guys that are on TV, and they started as stand ups,
as performers, and then you know they're on TV.

Speaker 5 (24:16):
You don't know what to expect from their live show.

Speaker 3 (24:19):
And a great example that.

Speaker 6 (24:20):
Is Billy Gardell who was Mike from that amazing so
so he by the way, I also lost.

Speaker 3 (24:26):
One hundred and seventy pounds.

Speaker 6 (24:27):
Yes he did, and I went and picked him up
in his publicists was like, listen, I'm not going to
be in town.

Speaker 3 (24:33):
Can you take him to Preston Steve on wm R.

Speaker 4 (24:36):
And I saw the.

Speaker 6 (24:36):
Picture the picture of that, and then it took him
on Good Day Philadelphia.

Speaker 3 (24:40):
He did the after show on.

Speaker 6 (24:41):
Fox twenty nine and he couldn't have been nicer and
appreciative and that I'm taking him around. But on stage,
as the kids say, he's slayd he he.

Speaker 4 (24:55):
I try to say that, I can't. I can't.

Speaker 3 (24:57):
I can't do it.

Speaker 4 (24:58):
I can't. If I try to say it, I just
yeah say that word. I'm like no.

Speaker 3 (25:02):
He was unbelievable.

Speaker 6 (25:04):
And and the thing is is that his he said
he's only working on his new hour, and a lot
of it.

Speaker 3 (25:09):
Was brand new.

Speaker 6 (25:10):
I'm like that it was tight, man, it's ready to go.
He killed and he had Uh. We had a local
opener that won the The Best of the Burbs are
basically Helium does Philly's Funniest and we started doing the
Best of the Philly suburbs, and we had that guy
open and it was the biggest crowd he ever performed
in front of. He had performed in front of maybe

(25:32):
two hundred and fifty people, and Billy Gardell had over
six hundred, nearly triple the amount of ever and are
you nervous?

Speaker 3 (25:40):
He goes no, went on and killed.

Speaker 6 (25:41):
And then he brought a guy from just like you said,
followed me during Covid had never been here, lives in Dallas,
and it was his first time here and he just
really Ben Creed it was his name, and he did
really well. And then and then of course, you know,
Billy Gardell went on stage and just really really just
killed the room and everybody.

Speaker 3 (26:03):
Of course, I almost say it's almost.

Speaker 6 (26:05):
Like when you go on stage and you make them
we're almost like drug dealers, where we get the audience
high through laughter and hit those endorphins kicking in. And
that was the last time they did it and their
their favorite moment. But I believe that that was one
of the best shows.

Speaker 4 (26:23):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (26:24):
Yeah, you talked about opening acts too, and I'm glad
you brought that up because you have some great opening
acts too.

Speaker 4 (26:30):
Before the main talent hits the stage exactly.

Speaker 1 (26:33):
I've been to shows and seen their opening acts doesn't
compare to the ones.

Speaker 6 (26:38):
You really thank you man, and that that's one thing
that we always try to do is you know, if
the talent's not bringing them in, we tried to have
a list of really good openers so that again they
feel comfortable and they want to come back. But that
means a lot, thank you, because I know you go
to a lot of shows and we always try to
put make.

Speaker 5 (26:54):
Sure that people are outside.

Speaker 3 (26:55):
The times are tough now, they're spending.

Speaker 6 (26:58):
Their hard earned money and we want to be al
always give them the most for.

Speaker 3 (27:02):
Their money, the best bang for their buck. Here.

Speaker 6 (27:05):
Keep our drink prices mean you know, to a minimum,
and we don't have minimums.

Speaker 3 (27:10):
And also the ticket.

Speaker 4 (27:11):
Price, that's the other part. You don't have minimums, yep.

Speaker 3 (27:13):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (27:14):
And there's no check spots, there's no you know, people
aren't coming around to the.

Speaker 3 (27:18):
Tables or anything like that.

Speaker 6 (27:19):
We just have seats and I want people to come
multiple times a week or multiple times a month, or
you know, come at least once a month and make
it a date night where they're not breaking the bank
to try This is our one night out of the year.

Speaker 3 (27:32):
We want people coming back.

Speaker 5 (27:33):
That's our business model and it always.

Speaker 6 (27:34):
Has been, and that's why we keep everything low.

Speaker 1 (27:38):
I like that you pointed out too, which I didn't
even think about until you just said it.

Speaker 3 (27:42):
Free parking, all that free.

Speaker 4 (27:44):
Well, that's that's also a thing.

Speaker 1 (27:46):
But the fact that it's no tables and there's no
one walking around, and I immediately just went, wait, he's right,
no one walks around, because I feel like it takes
away from you watching the show, like when you have
somebody coming up, if you're taking your order and all this.
I don't want to say that's annoying to me, but

(28:07):
it is kind of to the point where I'm kind
of like I want to watch the show, like leave
me alone.

Speaker 4 (28:13):
And again, that's me.

Speaker 1 (28:14):
I don't know how anybody else feels about that, but
for me, I think it takes away from what I'm
trying to see on stage.

Speaker 6 (28:20):
Absolutely, And as a businessman, we obviously could get more
because people don't want to go get up and get drinks,
but if we were serving them, we would sell more booze.
And there's a lot of people out there that don't
care about.

Speaker 3 (28:34):
The quality of the show.

Speaker 5 (28:36):
They just care about the alcohol sales.

Speaker 6 (28:39):
Yeah, and as management and ownership, we just said we're
not doing that, and people will get up and get drinks.

Speaker 3 (28:48):
It's not as frequent, but it is what it is.

Speaker 1 (28:51):
I think they respect it more. Yeah, I think they
respect your venue more because of that, because of the
fact that you're taking what you see normally in a
in a comedy club out of the equation. And I
think that's why they keep coming back, and I think
that's why you keep getting those five star reviews. And
I'm excited because I know the next show I'm gonna

(29:12):
be at is another one of my favorite humans, Chris Hardwick,
is going to be here.

Speaker 6 (29:17):
I was wondering if you were going to bring them up,
because I know there's a connection there. I'm mom Chris
his mom, not his mom.

Speaker 1 (29:24):
Yes, Chris Chris mom. I adore her. I already texted
her told her I was coming, and we're.

Speaker 6 (29:32):
So excited for that. It's part of Summerfest. It's it's
gonna be the sixth annual Summerfest. We created it out
of covid yep, and it's uh.

Speaker 4 (29:40):
Someone asked me today, what is summer.

Speaker 6 (29:42):
Yeah, and it's just it's it's Uh, it's marketing to
try to bring awareness of everything we're doing. And this year,
instead of just having comedy, it's all of our events.

Speaker 3 (29:53):
Because August is.

Speaker 6 (29:53):
One of those dead months where you know, people on
vacation are down the shore.

Speaker 3 (29:59):
We went the other way.

Speaker 6 (30:00):
We're booking bigger acts like Chris and doing more events
and bringing in more people. There are people on vacation,
but there's still enough people that are around.

Speaker 1 (30:10):
And I was gonna say, there's still somebody. There's still
plenty of people that are going to when they see
these names are.

Speaker 4 (30:15):
Going we have to make stuff exactly. You know.

Speaker 1 (30:18):
Chris is definitely a great get for Summer Fist. I'm
so happy for that.

Speaker 6 (30:22):
And he lives in California, so he doesn't come to
the East Coast as often, and he.

Speaker 1 (30:26):
Loves it here, Like, yeah, when he was in Philly,
he enjoyed it. He always wanted to come back. And
when I saw he was coming here, I was like, oh,
this is the perfect place for him.

Speaker 4 (30:35):
No shade, but it literally is the best place for
him to perform.

Speaker 1 (30:40):
And and it's funny the story of because you said
that there's a history there, Yeah, in Hardwick is because
when I did San Diego Comica last year he did,
he did a comedy said during the weekend of it,
and so I told his mom, I said, I'm going

(31:00):
to a show. I get up at the end because
he was running tight too, because he likes to do
pictures with the fans at the end of his shows. Right,
So for those of you who don't know, he likes
to take pictures with the fans at the end of
his show. That's something that he always stipulates in his show.
So at the end, we were doing the pictures since
he was like, Eh, fuck it, let's go ahead and

(31:22):
do it. Yeah, because he was still running tight on
time because the next show that he was supposed to
start in like thirty minutes.

Speaker 4 (31:30):
And I get up to the stage to where he was.
We hugged and the first thing he said was like, yeah,
my mom told me you were coming.

Speaker 1 (31:37):
I was like, she did.

Speaker 6 (31:40):
Well, at least you don't come across like I mean,
like like you're bothering them, like I mean, I was.

Speaker 4 (31:46):
Just I was just.

Speaker 1 (31:49):
He literally just flat out said that she gave me
heads up you were coming. I was like, I was like,
I don't want to say I was embarrassed, but I
kind of was blushing because I was going to like, oh,
that's so sweet, but also that's I'm so sorry.

Speaker 4 (32:08):
I love his mom too.

Speaker 1 (32:09):
His mom is absolutely adorable and she's very sweet and
she's just a great person. I love the fact that
the reason that I became friends with him is because
of his first ever show in Philly. So it was
right before the shutdown. It was right before the shutdown.
He did a show in Philly at Helium and I

(32:31):
posted the picture when we did it afterwards, and I
tagged his mom in it because there was there was
another picture that was posted and she like, she like
regrammed it. So I commented on it and I said,
you probably can't tell us apart because we both are
smiling and we both.

Speaker 4 (32:47):
Have the same teeth.

Speaker 1 (32:49):
And so I posted our picture and she commented on
mine and said, like, I can't tell you apart you're twins.

Speaker 4 (32:55):
And ever since then.

Speaker 1 (32:56):
We just struck up that friendship just for that picture
and then we just, yeah, the rest is history, and.

Speaker 4 (33:03):
That's just how it works.

Speaker 1 (33:04):
I just feel like when you when you produce good vibes,
you get good vibes back. And that's another reason why
I love coming here because I've garnered so many friends
from this venue.

Speaker 3 (33:13):
Really I have.

Speaker 4 (33:15):
I mean Corolla show was one of them. Yeah, it
really was.

Speaker 6 (33:19):
I remember you were in Gasbi's and you were everyone
was just just hanging out and talking and it was.

Speaker 1 (33:24):
Just we like literally exchanged numbers like everybody we were
hanging out with after that show because we struck out
that friendship because of Adam. And that's one of the
things I love about coming here is just like you
may not know anybody, but you're gonna know everybody when
you leave here. You're gonna know everybody when you leave here.
So I'm so proud and humble to be a part

(33:45):
of this. Even though someone thought I worked here.

Speaker 4 (33:47):
I don't.

Speaker 1 (33:50):
I'm a mad supporter of soldiers and that's why I
buy the merch and that's why I keep coming back
here and continue to come back here because you just
you produce quality content here.

Speaker 4 (34:01):
Thanks for having absolutely Let's do it again.
