You, thank you. I'm very happy to be here for
you in the fans.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
Pete, It's always an honor to speak with a professional athlete,
so you know, the honor is mine and Pete. You know,
this year marks the thirty year anniversary of that event
McNeely versus Tyson and this was post prison release for Tyson.
Take us back to that historic time. What were you thinking,

(01:24):
how is this fight arranged? And how did you train
for this battle?

Speaker 2 (01:31):
Well, going into the fight, I was thirty six of one.
I lost a right in right and downtown Boston to
Steally Right. He was six foot ten, and he taught

(01:56):
me bad over my left eye, uh from healing healing there,
you know healing they call it healing or no delaces?
Where his now padding on your gloves. So I took

(02:25):
the cut and took sixty stitches.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
And it was back fighting in a ring in our
guitar less than three months later.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
And Hurricane. You know, I'm looking at your record prior
to that Tyson fight. Yeah, you're you were thirty six
and one with thirty knockouts and so you know, and
there was a lot of media attention regarding you know,
you were such an underdog. You know you were going
to lose, but you came in with some record, you

(03:03):
know versus Tyson.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Yes, yes, at the end I won forty seven, I
lost seven at thirty six KOs. The end was two ninth,

(03:29):
two thousand of one, all the way in Cape Towns,
South Africa.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
And I want to ask you, h Pete, Wait, oh.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
That was a nine days notice.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Nine days.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
Well, so how did you train for this fight? How
did you train.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Well your fights? Near the end of my career concily
training because my my manager, coach, my promoter manager, coach
Viny warned me stay in shape. The phone could bring

(04:19):
any any day.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
And you must have got so many phone calls. This
was such a big event. Like I mentioned in the beginning,
it set a pay per view record. I think one
point fifty two million households.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
Uh you know subscribe to this event. It's still a record.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
At that time, it was the most watched worldwide.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
Unbelievable. So so I see a lot of pictures of
you and Muhammad Ali uh now was a li at
that event. There must have been so many celebrities at
this big event.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
I'm not sure if Olly was there, but I met
Mom Raley three times in the bus in the area,
and yes, he was truly that greatest.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
And when we spoke the beginning of the week, you
mentioned something that sliced alone gave you a call?

Speaker 3 (05:34):
Is that a fact?

Speaker 2 (05:36):
Yeah? I knuckleheads the voice fail on my phone at
GMGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
Oh what does the long tell you? What did he say?

Speaker 2 (05:55):
He gonna make a movie about me? But I have
to win?

Speaker 1 (06:03):
So so you so you's alone? You're not fond of him.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
No, he's a Hollywood boxing clown.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
So he was gonna he was actually gonna put you
in a Rocky movie.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
That's what he said. I didn't he more any movies
at that at that point, I believe.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
All right, So talk about So let's let's start from
the beginning, your early amateur years.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
How did you get how did you get involved in boxing?

Speaker 2 (06:46):
Well, as many people know, I am I I am
the turn turn generation from professional boxer in my family.
The first was tomcneilly senior, my grandfather, who I'd never met.

(07:13):
He died dog loll braw I was born. He rote
on the stairs and middle night broke his neck. Dead gone.
But Tom McNeilly senor was a great boxer. You know.

(07:37):
In matter of fact, Thom McNelly fought in early pro
fight on the opening night of the original Boston Garden.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
The original Garden.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Yes, then my father fought. My father, Tommy Daily Junior
fought at the Garden to many times to count.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
Now you were now, you know, you were always known
as a hard hitting, you know, a kid from Boston.
And if I'm correct, nineteen ninety five, there was a
showtime television event in which I believe and I don't
know if I'm right, but it featured your first nationwide

(08:40):
appearance March seventeenth, nineteen ninety five.

Speaker 2 (08:46):
Yes, that was in Woolston, Worcester, Massachusetts.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
Right, and now you faced Danny Lee Wolford.

Speaker 2 (08:59):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (09:00):
Kay? Uh going into that fight again.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (09:04):
Like like when you get into these to the ring
with these opponents, like are you feeling nervous or you
have to have I mean you have to be very
positive you're gonna come out victorious.

Speaker 3 (09:16):
Correct, So what's the mindset?

Speaker 1 (09:21):
Like, what's how do you train your mindset to be
positive that you're gonna win, that you're gonna win this battle?
Like what technique do you?

Speaker 2 (09:30):
I just would call there to do it, like Bug
Jackson said, just do it.

Speaker 1 (09:44):
And talk a little bit about Don promoter Don King.
Uh did you did you interact a lot with Don King?

Speaker 2 (09:54):
Don King treated us great? U. I have nothing negative
to say about Don King. I mean, honestly, honestly, wasn't
gonna was gonna hurt us if he talked bad about us?

(10:22):
He was right or honor. I had a four year
contract Parosso contract with Don King.

Speaker 3 (10:32):
So so King treated you right. He treated you fairly.

Speaker 2 (10:36):
Yes, yes, very much.

Speaker 1 (10:38):
So, Uh who do you use? Who would you say,
uh is responsible? Well, you know the success of your career.
Would you would you say King was.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
Well? I mean I would say maybe the thank you
on my priorer manager coach. He did everything I did.
All I had to do was show up, do our roadwork,
show up to the jim and train hard.

Speaker 1 (11:23):
And you know we're talking with Peter McNeely goes by
the name of Hurricane, former boxer. He's with us this morning. Uh, Pete,
what do you think of the sport of boxing today?
Still popular?

Speaker 2 (11:36):
Yes? Yes, I try to watch and he in all fights.
I have a friend who records him and she comes
over here with doesn't we watch him?

Speaker 1 (12:00):
And you know, going back to that fight against Tyson,
that that must have been a huge payday for.

Speaker 2 (12:07):
You, Hugh. Thank God enough that I own my home
today because of the fight with Mike Tyson.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
You know, I'm looking at your career, your boxing career,
so I mean you lasted for let me let me
count this. You lasted for about a decade, ten years
if I'm if I'm correct, Your first fight right, ten years.
Your first fight was in August ninety one against Van Dorsey.
That was the first time you fought professionally. If I'm correct,

(12:47):
Van Dorsey knocked you down and you came back and
beat him. Is that?

Speaker 3 (12:53):
Is that what happened that that fight?

Speaker 2 (12:55):
Yes, but but he did not lock me down. He
pushed me.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
Down, did he really?

Speaker 2 (13:04):
Yeah, who's a joke. But I got up and I
knocked along, looked along quickly.

Speaker 1 (13:16):
Yeah, you knocked him out. And then then the second.

Speaker 2 (13:20):
That was the Boston University Football Field, August twenty third,
nineteen ninety one.

Speaker 1 (13:31):
Yup, I'm looking at a scorecard. Yep, August twenty Yeah,
August twenty second, twenty third, nineteen ninety one, Van Dorsey,
your second fight, Fabian Arroyo, whatever, What do you remember
about that fight?

Speaker 2 (13:42):
Well? That was that was also a Worcester. Was the
ESPN fight card at what was then known as Blister Centrum.
I don't know what they call it today, but yeah,

(14:10):
it was. It was a great fight night.

Speaker 3 (14:13):
And that was.

Speaker 1 (14:14):
Another that was you won by knockout, right, Yes, you
won by knockout. Your third fight Kevin Chisholm. Now Kevin
Chisholm was known to be a quick mover in the ring.
That's another fight that came December nineteen ninety. What do
you remember about that fight Kevin.

Speaker 2 (14:31):
Chisholm early in December nineteen You one, and thank god
I got him on there quickly. He was a very

(14:52):
tough uphone.

Speaker 1 (14:54):
He was tough right, Yes, yeah, he was tough Chisholm.
Then after Chisholm, you fought Phil Prince. Yes, that fight
was colleging.

Speaker 2 (15:11):
To call them Prince. So he was a rutician. They
called him, Yeah, craveyard, craveyard pill.

Speaker 1 (15:30):
And that's a fight. You want my knockout again? Yes, okay,
Then you fight hey sus rowhetta Rowheeda. You remember that
one February ninety two. Was he challenging for you?

Speaker 2 (15:45):
Was that the one time dog track did not which
does not exist anymore. They banned yo uh racing in
the halls, racing in uh masut.

Speaker 1 (16:11):
So heyesus Rowheeda. And then after him, you fight Jerry Arensen.

Speaker 2 (16:17):
Yes, thousand thou those on the that was.

Speaker 3 (16:22):
ESPN ESPN Live at the time.

Speaker 2 (16:25):
Yes, and I got like they showed it on on
the ESPN.

Speaker 1 (16:36):
And we we gotta remember these You win by knockouts, yes,
unbelievable and this is actually heading you towards that big
match against Tyson. I mean, here you're winning your knocking
these opponents out by knockouts.

Speaker 2 (16:54):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (16:55):
John Basil Jackson June twelfth, nineteen ninety two.

Speaker 2 (17:00):
Oh man, he was the first one to take me
to a fight to the distance. Uh, I won't be
a a four under. Then we fought of again in

(17:25):
women Maschists, and nobody could dart this guy out and
and I chilled him that night.

Speaker 1 (17:47):
So out of all those fighters I mentioned, uh, pete, Uh,
Basil Jackson was the toughest you faced compared to the
other ones I mentioned at the time. Yes, and you
win that fight and then you then you go on
and face Jimmy Harrison.

Speaker 2 (18:11):
Yes. I fought Jimmy three times. First was a war hounder,
second was a sixth round well I'm sorry. Second I
stopped him cut also at the Undo and drag track,

(18:36):
and uh, the third one was in Dorchester, which basically
is Boston. And I mean I beat him up so
bad that night, Bob, but I caught a six round

(18:59):
decision win. And I'm sorry to say that to the
arison is no longer with us today.

Speaker 1 (19:17):
Right see okay, see, yeah, you fight Jimmy Harrison June
ninety two. Then September eleventh, ninety two, you fight him
again and you win by knockout on that fight. And
then September ninety two you go, you go against Van
Dorsey again.

Speaker 3 (19:37):
Yes, all right, after me, gad.

Speaker 2 (19:44):
I'm sorry, go ahead.

Speaker 1 (19:45):
No no, goad, goad, no, go ahead after Van Dorsey,
Sean Bryant.

Speaker 2 (19:54):
Yeah, that was a quick, quick win. Another a quick win.

Speaker 1 (20:01):
I win by knockout.

Speaker 2 (20:02):
Then Lorenzo, Yes, Lorenzo Pool And it was at the
fox Boro Raceway, Foxboro, Massachusetts, And yeah, I everybody thought
he was gonna give me a big fight. This guy

(20:26):
was very big, looked like a you know, we lived
through our body go there. But I blew him out
quickly too, you sure did.

Speaker 1 (20:42):
And then after after that fight, you go on and
you fight Harrison Harrison again, and then Ron Drinkwater. Well,
can you tell us about that fight between you and
Ron Drinkwater?

Speaker 2 (20:53):
Well, roll my my now wrong. Drink Water was on
the comeback and he he had been formally trained by
reading Wreqion so really warned me. He said, Peter, he

(21:16):
can punch, so be careful. So I first run jumped
right on him, caught right on him, not yell a
few times and cut him, cut him up. Basically god

(21:39):
the lock one.

Speaker 1 (21:44):
You sure that you got the knockout against drink Water,
that's correct, by knockout. And then after that again you
fight Rowhena, then again Basil Jackson, Phil Prince, and then
Mark Mark Matt Chain, Mark McCain.

Speaker 2 (21:59):
I don't know how Mark Machine.

Speaker 1 (22:02):
Mark Machine, another battle in which you knock him out.
How was that battle for you?

Speaker 2 (22:11):
What was a scheduling on and I finally you know,
it took along finally killed.

Speaker 1 (22:26):
And that you know, what's a tough fight? Was that
Stanley Wright fight February nineteen ninety four, Now I think
that was your first loss.

Speaker 3 (22:34):
That was a tough fight.

Speaker 2 (22:35):
Yes, yes, like I said, he cut me, you know,
using the leases as the heel of his boxes off.
It's okay. We got to sixty pitches and came back,

(22:56):
but relatively quickly.

Speaker 1 (23:03):
I mean, yeah, you so you lose that fight and
then your next you know, your next previous fights you
win them all and then ninth comes nineteen ninety five,
August eighteenth against Tyson. Uh, like I mentioned, this was
when Tyson was released from prison. And if I, if
I recall, uh that there was a lot of talk

(23:24):
at that time that you know, Tyson was getting older.
I mean, was Danny butterflies in your stomach that you
were going up against, you know, the great Mike Tyson.

Speaker 2 (23:34):
Number one, number one. He had just turned twenty nine
in June. So twenty nine is prime time for any
every eight.

Speaker 1 (23:57):
So you thought, so there was in your mind, there
was there was a thought that a I'm gonna handle
this guy.

Speaker 2 (24:09):
I'm not going in the ring if I don't believe
I can win.

Speaker 1 (24:21):
Absolutely, And like mentioned, I mean you you came on
board at that fight with all these victorious you know,
with this victorious record of thirty six and one, so
you were not a shabby opponent by any means.

Speaker 2 (24:37):
Oh, I was just trying to be.

Speaker 1 (24:45):
And then you know, I read so much about that
event ringside. There were so many people at that event,
you know, Eddie Murphy, Denzel Washington, Demi Moore and Bruce
Willison everything. I mean, the whole world was watching this event.
That's really the event that catapulted your legacy.

Speaker 2 (25:03):
Correct.

Speaker 3 (25:06):
Have you spoken to Tyson?

Speaker 2 (25:10):
Oh? Yes, yes, yes I have. Matter of fact, matter
of fact, four years ago, this past June fifteenth, my

(25:32):
only wife in my life died at her two sons
home in Boston, and was it two days out. Mike
Tyson called me left of vice well on my on
my phone. So the next day I called him back.

(25:57):
He said, Peter, she's easy talk. Call me anytime. Brother.

Speaker 1 (26:15):
I mean, that's very very nice to Tyson it Pete.
You know, my time is out. This was great. I
really appreciate your time this morning.

Speaker 2 (26:23):
Thank you, thank you for having me on.

Speaker 1 (26:27):
Thank you so much, Pete. I really appreciate it. Hurricane
Peter McNeely until next week
