the fire maybe arson, and it wouldn't be the first time.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
I see it.

Speaker 6 (00:29):
As the mayor and city manager trying to justify the
funding that went.

Speaker 7 (00:34):
Into this can I put a price in the city.

Speaker 5 (00:36):
Some of his life one year after it opened was
a contentious hub for Victoria's unhouled A success depends on
who you talk to.

Speaker 5 (00:50):
He's a former Blue Jay World Series champion. He's on
Vancouver Island and tells us all about Game seven.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Check News starts now, Good evening, Thanks for being here tonight.

Speaker 5 (01:07):
Port Alberni RCMP are investigating following a suspicious fire early
this morning. The blaze badly damaged a trailer and BC
ambulance took one person to hospital. As Kendall Hansen reports,
this isn't the first suspicious fire in the mobile home park.

Speaker 9 (01:24):
This is a look at a trailer fire in port Alberni.
Firefighters responding just after four this morning when part of
the home is engulfed in flames, with mobile homes close
by on either side.

Speaker 10 (01:35):
Criz worked quickly to knock the fire down to prevent
spread to those other trailers, and then advanced inside the
home to start suppressing the fire itself.

Speaker 9 (01:46):
The mobile home is on McIntyre Drive. Some neighbors were
awoken by the commotion, others by the power going out.

Speaker 7 (01:53):
I heard some screaming and then I heard a big,
loud explosion. I got up, stood on my deck.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
I can see the fire and I.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
Said, Jack, get up, there's a fire.

Speaker 7 (02:02):
So we got out, got dressed, went out there to
make sure it wasn't in cash ratuel On fire.

Speaker 11 (02:08):
Trailer on fire, big time, and the owner of the
trailer was saiding no way here. A nuts man blocked there,
having a big cry oh no.

Speaker 9 (02:20):
Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading. One
man was able to get out of the home on
his own.

Speaker 10 (02:26):
One gentleman had self extracted with his cat That individual
was then passed over to BCHS, who subsequently transferred that
person to West Coast General with some smoke inhalation.

Speaker 9 (02:41):
Water is still dripping from the home that official suspect
is a rite off. Neighbors say the home has been
the site of suspected drug activity.

Speaker 10 (02:49):
There were some indications while we were there that the
fire was suspicious in nature, and so we have handed
the fire over to the RCNP at this time.

Speaker 9 (03:00):
The fire department says it has responded to other fires
at the mobile home park in the past. The last
one was on July twenty third.

Speaker 10 (03:08):
Those were also suspicious in nature and involved different trailers
than the one that was involved last night.

Speaker 9 (03:16):
Though the others didn't cause as much damage. Police say
the trailer's owner has been released from the hospital and
authorities are helping him find transitional housing. Police also say
they're investigating the fire as an arson and they've interviewed witnesses,
but would like to speak to any other witnesses or
those who may have video surveillance.

Speaker 5 (03:35):
Police in the Souk area are investigating after two dogs
were shot on Sunday morning, leaving one dead and the
other seriously injured. Officers recalled just before noon to the
twenty five hundred block of Farmer Drive on reports that
two dogs had been shot. Police say surveillance footage captured
shots being fired just before noon and then shows one
of the animals collapsing in a nearby driveway. One dog

(03:58):
died on scene, while the second was taken to a
local veterinarian for emergency treatment. Peli say they're still trying
to find a suspect and figure out if the shooting
is criminal.

Speaker 12 (04:08):
Some circumstances where it may be legitimate to euthanize a dog, however,
you know, surrounding houses and that sort of thing. It's
obviously very concerning that someone is shooting a firearm. Who
are looking for anybody with any information CCTV or dash
cam video of the incident to contact the SUGARCP.

Speaker 5 (04:32):
Yet another BC Conservative MLA quit the party today as
part of a growing chorus of critics urging leader John
russ Dad to resign. Let's head down to the BC
Legislature and check in with Rob Shaw. Rob but tell
us more about what's going on here today.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Both sacy.

Speaker 13 (04:49):
This is the fifth MLA from the Conservatives to quit
or be fired in the last seven months. This time,
Pentic does Amelia Boltby, a rookie MLA and lawyer, who
says Restad needs to resigned before he hands the next
election to the BCNDP. She says he's preventing MLAs from
voting on his leadership and running a party that is unraveling.

Speaker 14 (05:09):
Here she is today, I am leaving because John Rustad's
failed leadership.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
Needs to end.

Speaker 14 (05:16):
I believe he has massive credibility problems and he is
resorting to intimidation in order to prevent us from organizing
against him. Good leaders don't do that. If John has
nothing to hide, he should have let us vote instead
of canceling caucus meetings, keeping it off the agenda, and
intimidating us with threats of not signing our nomination papers.

Speaker 13 (05:39):
Russ Dad refusing to step down, suggesting Boltby had mental
health issues, an accusation that did not go over well
within his own caucus. Courtney MLA Brennan Day going online
to say it was an inappropriate thing to say. Boltby
also accusing Rustad, accusing her of leaking information, among other things.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
Here's Rustad's response with.

Speaker 15 (05:59):
Regards to Amenia's health. I mean had concerns when she's
in tears. Staff are telling me that she's very confused,
and so, I mean I had some concerns. I mean,
she's had some issues in the past, and I'm trying
to do everything I could to support her in working
through whatever those issues may be. But as to specifics,
I'm not going to be talking about specifics.

Speaker 6 (06:23):
Now.

Speaker 13 (06:23):
The question will be whether Boltby joins Independent mla eleanor Sterco,
who was fired from the Conservatives last month, informing what
would be the legislature's fifth party. She says he's open
to that, but really is waiting to see if Rustad resigns,
at which point she'd be willing to rejoin the Conservatives.

Speaker 3 (06:41):
So we shall see, Stacy.

Speaker 5 (06:43):
Indeed, we shall rob the time flies when you're having fun,
they say, it's hard to believe, but we are at
the one year anniversary of the b C election. Give
us a sense of how things have changed in that
twelve months.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Yeah, I mean what a difference a year makes.

Speaker 13 (06:57):
The NDP still only have that slim one seat majority,
but a totally new agenda from the governing party now
on mining in LNG and resources, and a large provincial deficit,
plus we have a new two person far right party,
the one BC Party. We have those three independent MLAs.
We have the same two BC Green MLAs, but with

(07:18):
a new unelected leader, Emily a Loan, a very different
landscape in some ways than.

Speaker 3 (07:23):
What voters elected a year ago.

Speaker 13 (07:24):
Polls the past year have put the NDP still in
the lead. Abicus data the latest today to put the
NDP up seven points over the Conservatives, but with a
rising number of British Columbians more than half in the
Abocus poll unhappy over the direction the government is taking,
maybe looking for an alternative to the NDP and not
finding it in the Conservatives. Here's Premier David eb today.

Speaker 16 (07:47):
That's what we're going to say. Focused on that is
our number one priority. That's what today's announcement is about,
creating more jobs, growing our economy, standing on our own
two feet. We're working closely with the fourst sector in
the federal government to respond to the threats from true
the Conservatives have an entirely different focus and I don't
understand what it is, but their proposal yesterday that we

(08:08):
shut down major projects across the province is just an
example of how out of touch they are. With where
British Columbians are right now.

Speaker 13 (08:18):
Some shifting positions here. A year later, the BC Conservatives
going from forty four MLAs down to thirty nine. John
Restad riding high after almost winning the last election, now
barely hanging on as leader.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
Stacy.

Speaker 13 (08:27):
Premier David Ebee barely won the election with all the
descent of the opposition side, looking more and more secure
in his hold for government.

Speaker 5 (08:36):
Stacey rob I think in twelve months from now the
picture will be quite different yet again, looking forward to
all that we have to go through until down.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
Thanks so much, We'll see you soon.

Speaker 7 (08:47):
Well.

Speaker 5 (08:47):
One year after the City of Victoria's one point six
million dollar investment into a local nonprofit, we're getting a
sense of the result. Solidge Outreach says the taxpayer money
held seventy four people into housing and more than two
and through a recovery program. The mayor says it's money
well spent.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
Of course.

Speaker 4 (09:04):
Sit Away reports a year ago it was a move
that was unprecedented.

Speaker 7 (09:09):
This is new ground for us. This is a door
we haven't opened before without consultation.

Speaker 4 (09:15):
The City of Victoria announced it had given hundreds of
thousands of dollars to a nonprofit to help buy a building,
and it would be investing a million more into running
what they called a new access hub for and housed
through public backlash over the lack of information, renovation delays,
and shifting delivery models.

Speaker 17 (09:35):
This site is clean sight, so one of the stipulations
of being here is there's no drug use on site.

Speaker 4 (09:43):
Dellar Place stands today as a transitional care house three
to four months days support around the clock for those
looking to escape the cycle of addiction and homelessness, the
ultimate focus getting them back into stable housing. In its
report submitted Friday to the city, Solid outreached as with
the one point six million dollars in taxpayer money, their

(10:03):
peer based program has helped seventy four people into housing.
As of June, solid says twenty nine clients had completed
the recovery program. Those who transition to housing are also
offered continued supports through an aftercare program. Do you think
that this investment was based on those numbers, was worth it?

Speaker 3 (10:21):
Absolutely.

Speaker 7 (10:22):
You can't put a price in saving someone's life, and
there's no doubt in my mind that a significant number
of those people were in very precarious situations and the
work that saulids done with them over the year has
been extraordinary.

Speaker 4 (10:32):
Despite the program's reported success, for this North Park neighbor,
the inconsistent messaging over the past year means his trust
with the city and SOLID has eroded.

Speaker 6 (10:42):
I see it as the mayor and city managers trying
to justify the funding that went into this.

Speaker 4 (10:50):
Victoria's mayor says the public should take solid's report at
face value.

Speaker 7 (10:54):
SAULA has been incredibly transparent to what they're doing now,
and I think it's important for us to learn from
the that we used last year. Could we have done
it better?

Speaker 16 (11:02):
Of course we always can.

Speaker 7 (11:03):
If there's another opportunity to pilot something like that, we will.

Speaker 4 (11:06):
The city's funding for Dollar Place ended in June and
it's now being funded federally. Also says the program has
proven so successful she's heard from other municipalities keen on
copying the model.

Speaker 5 (11:19):
A proposal is coming forward to the Capital Regional District
to mirror the City of Victoria's youth bus pass program
and make transit free for those eighteen and under. CRD
directors and Victoria counselors Jeremy Caro, Donna and Dave Thompson
are putting forward in motions for staff to study the costs,
benefits and implications of creating a region wide free youth

(11:40):
bus pass program. Caro Donna says the Victoria program has
seen seventy percent of youth participating, helping them travel safely
and save families money.

Speaker 18 (11:50):
We want to get young people onto transit and create
that next generation of writers and that does help build
the business case for expanding service because all of a
sud and you have this new clientele and young people
who become habituated then to riding the bus, so it
really does help serve service levels in addition at just
reducing household costs for families.

Speaker 17 (12:11):
We will celebrate so much if this can happen for
youth in the whole CRD. But what really needs to
happen is the province with the provincial money needs to
come in and they need to make this change for
youth all across BC.

Speaker 5 (12:25):
While the conversation might not be at the provincial level yet,
the CRD board will debate the motion on Wednesday and
on checkpoints and I we want to know what you
think should transit be free for everyone eighteen and under?
You can vote at Checknews dot Ca and we'll have
results for you a little bit later in the broadcast. Well,
it has been quite the ride for Blue Jays fans

(12:46):
this postseason, and tonight the ride comes to a screeching
halt or continues on to the World Series. It's a
Game seven between the Jays and Seattle Mariners, an experience
that can be equal parts magical and terrifying for fans. Today,
Jordan Cunningham found a famous face who's been there and
who likes the Jays chances.

Speaker 16 (13:06):
Good morning, everybody.

Speaker 8 (13:08):
Good to see all of you here when a game
forty two hundred kilometers away is top of mind for
the premiere, you know it's big.

Speaker 16 (13:14):
Go, Jay's go, and and good luck tonight the.

Speaker 8 (13:17):
Bandwagon stretches across the country. Is the Blue Jays staredown
at Game seven versus the Mariners in the American League
Championship Series. You no doubt know somebody from Vancouver Island
who's mobilized for this magic.

Speaker 3 (13:29):
Hell yeah, brother, let's go.

Speaker 8 (13:31):
Or maybe it's you that's hanging on every pitch of
the series. Game seven is the most intense experience in sports.
The worst part as a super fan is having to
work on game day at Kirby's source for sports. Ethan
and Keelan are just trying to look busy. Is this
even fun? Game seven not?

Speaker 3 (13:48):
It's too stressful.

Speaker 8 (13:49):
We met Ethan ten days ago before the start of
the series. He saw Game three in Seattle, even met
Jay's starter Trey Ya Savage. You guys are friends, best bud.
He's counting the minutes until five away when the game
starts and he doesn't have to hang out with Mariners
fan Keelan Hondro, who has a very specific prediction.

Speaker 18 (14:06):
Can Jays get out to a four to one lead
and then with twelve outs to go, they're going to
collapse and lose five to four.

Speaker 8 (14:14):
We have actual connections in the city when it comes
to the series. At this hotel, the Victoria Harborcats are
hosting the West Coast League fall meetings. The Cats both
Jay's hero Nathan Lucas as an alum. Tony Bonacci owned
the Cowletz Black Bears in twenty fourteen when Shane.

Speaker 3 (14:28):
Bieber pitched for a season.

Speaker 8 (14:29):
Bieber starts for the Jays in Game seven, but actually
says he's the perfect guy for the job.

Speaker 13 (14:34):
He is a competitive guy, and there's a lot of
reason for confidence.

Speaker 8 (14:38):
But the final word on a Game seven goes to
a guy who's been there, done that pitch, and got
the ring after a walk off Game seven World Series
win in nineteen ninety seven.

Speaker 17 (14:50):
I'm the guy that catches Creig Council as he comes
flying out of the air.

Speaker 3 (14:54):
He ross's own plate. Yes, that was me.

Speaker 8 (14:56):
Jays fans know Greg's on for his days behind the
plate and as a former broadcast he's here for the
WCL League meetings as new head coach of the Colonna Falcons.
He played for nine big league teams, but as one
clear favorite tonight.

Speaker 15 (15:08):
I am a fan, There's no doubt about.

Speaker 8 (15:09):
I mean, if I'm going to root for an American
League team, it's going to be the Blue Jays. He
has some advice for the rest of us.

Speaker 9 (15:15):
We just enjoyed themselves this, Like I said, this is
where you play.

Speaker 8 (15:17):
We should enjoy this absolutely, But we're freaking out.

Speaker 3 (15:20):
I don't freak out.

Speaker 8 (15:22):
So try to enjoy the best kind of stress.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
Boy, oh boy.

Speaker 5 (15:28):
Lots of fun for baseball fans right now, and lots
of fun for our upside friends.

Speaker 2 (15:31):
Guys, tell us what's going on on Monday.

Speaker 19 (15:34):
Well, we're lour Johnson here just in the perimeter of
the Market Square. This is the Downtown Victoria Business Association
celebration of Small Business Month. And so we are here
with Aaron and her great business. Violette boutique just full
of all kinds of beautiful, shiny things. So thanks for
inviting us down here today and tell us about some
of these shiny things.

Speaker 20 (15:54):
So, Violette is a multi brand jewelry boutique and these
are a few pieces from our collection vill At Studio.
This is a brand new piece that will be launching
this week. It's called the Sonia necklace and matching Sylvie
ear rings.

Speaker 1 (16:09):
Beautiful.

Speaker 20 (16:10):
We also have our best selling love Letter necklace. We
sell at least one a day.

Speaker 19 (16:15):
So that's this one is as your your wife is
not exactly hasn't changed.

Speaker 1 (16:22):
I have to take that last name.

Speaker 19 (16:24):
She's worried about that.

Speaker 21 (16:25):
And you've said these hoops are fantastic.

Speaker 20 (16:27):
They are the perfect hoop. We have probably close to
two dozen different styles of gold hoops and these are
everybody's favorite.

Speaker 21 (16:36):
All right, mostly Canadian stuff here. And you make your
own line as well.

Speaker 3 (16:39):
Yes we do.

Speaker 20 (16:39):
Yeah, we have our own in house line that we
launched about four years ago, and yeah, it's become one
of our top sellers. Yeah.

Speaker 21 (16:47):
How important is the DVBA to the small businesses down here?

Speaker 20 (16:51):
It's really important. They definitely give us a voice, and
they can be like a shoulder to crown.

Speaker 2 (16:58):
They can give us, you know, advice, and it's.

Speaker 20 (17:02):
Just a really nice sense of community that they provide
for us.

Speaker 21 (17:05):
We love that, and we love that everything has names
here as well. And not only that you have cards here,
you have candles here, and you also have glasses here.
They are their names for the glasses there, sure are.

Speaker 14 (17:17):
Yeah, I think these are the d Actually, well, how
lucky that I picked these up?

Speaker 6 (17:23):
Okay, all right, the jets, yeah they are. Okay, that's a.

Speaker 19 (17:28):
Whole different looking world.

Speaker 21 (17:30):
And then of course yeah these are yeah, very nice.

Speaker 3 (17:35):
It's okay, I gotta buy that.

Speaker 22 (17:37):
I get down here and get the hoops and we're
you'll find out more about the Villette boutique and a
Small Business Month with the Downtown Victoria Business Association and
Aaron coming up a little later on from Lojo.

Speaker 16 (17:49):
As we like to have the glasses, we could say Lojo.

Speaker 2 (17:53):
All right, sounds good, guys, We'll see you soon.

Speaker 11 (17:55):
Thank you.

Speaker 5 (17:56):
Also still to come. On Checked tonight, a landmark totem
pool in downtown Victoria Rio will soon come down.

Speaker 3 (18:01):
I'll tell you why. And this it's ridiculous.

Speaker 13 (18:04):
It's ridiculous that that the owners aren't held to account
because you know, especially when it's under.

Speaker 3 (18:09):
The water like that.

Speaker 5 (18:10):
This weekend's windstorm saws several boats into the rocks of
Nanaimo Harbor.

Speaker 2 (18:15):
Removing them could take months. That's coming up.

Speaker 1 (18:20):
The Road Report is brought to you by Craftsman Collision,
BC's favorite family owned craftsman Collision All Better.

Speaker 19 (18:27):
Here's a look at the current Vancouver Island road conditions
from the dry BC webcams.
