Day four of a wildfire burning out of control here
on Vancouver Island. Here is a live look tonight as
you could see a chopper just heading into that ridge
on Wesley Ridge right now as attention turns to weather
as a threat to holmes and cutting off communities looms,
we have the latest on the firefight. Check News starts

(00:37):
right now.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
Good evening, and thanks for joining us.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
We have now entered day four of a wildfire burning
out of control. First discusis near Cameron Lake, forcing evacuation
orders and alerts the positive news At this hour the
fire has not grown since last night and there is
change coming in the weather well right now though, all
eyes and available crews are on the Wesley Ridge wildfire

(01:17):
as it continues to burn out of control as wind
is picking.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
Up on both sides of it.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
At this hour, the fire is listed at three hundred
and eighty nine hectares in size and again hasn't grown
since last night, but continues to threaten areas around Cameron Lake.
Meadow Wood and Little Qualicum River Village. We have full
coverage tonight. Sky Rhine is about five kilometers away from
the firefight, and Test Van Stratton is in Victoria's Inner

(01:46):
Harbor for Symphony Splash, but will be giving us the
latest on the current conditions as most of the island
sits at an extreme fire danger rating. But first let's
go to Sky Ryin, who's been following the developing story
for days. It's been tense for many people living in
the region and there's concern where the fire will go
next as it remains out of control.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
Sky.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
Thank you so much for joining us right now. What
can you tell us at this hour, Well, I.

Speaker 4 (02:15):
Can tell you that it is an even more concerning
side over on camera Lank. We spent the last two
days at Meadowood location where obviously three hundred homes we're
in jeopardy, but those homes here too are starting to
get very stressed. Evacuation orders and notices have gone out.
I spoke to many people today who were packing their bags,

(02:35):
packing their cars, had their livestock being removed, very worried
about the state of things. When you look at that smoke.
Duili behind us Highway four remains open, but at this
stage there are a lot of people on very very
out of yours rore the edge of their seats. You're
not sure what the next few hours are going to bring.

(02:55):
There's still a lot of heat coming down.

Speaker 3 (03:03):
Sky.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
My understanding. You and chattis who is behind the camera
right now. Chattis Leo who Youtubo have been working as
a team throughout the day.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
The last several days following this story.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
I know you were on Highway for earlier in the
day and there were signs or activity around there from
officials that possibly were looking at what they may have
to do.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
With that portion of the highway.

Speaker 5 (03:26):
Well.

Speaker 4 (03:26):
Indeed, there were traffic controlled people originally set up at
Schalet Road, which is just at the right the last
road before where the fire started two years ago. Those
were then moved down further here to where we are at,
and that was a real sign to a lot of
people that things were starting to take shape that perhaps
there would be some road closures, even temporarily. It was

(03:49):
a very very smoke filled area the South Tranida can't
emphasize that enough. We took our drive through highway for
us through the camera Lake stretch, and there was even
smoke into a cathedral, which was quite a surprise for
us because obviously Cathedral Grove is one of our national treasures.
There continued to be actually quite a few visitors in

(04:09):
there that were perhaps unaware of how serious this threat was.
That area was not evacuated. However, Little Qualicum the re Falls,
which is just this side of it, was And that
is basically how how close things have gotten just a
matter of a few kilometers. All day long, they're the
people running this ridge trying to hear and see what

(04:31):
was going on in their own backyard, because talking about
the family is an area. It's crazy, you know, imunitus,
how people come out when there's power images, there's a
tree down, and now they're all in the same boat,
all very worried about their homes.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
All right, we'll leave it there, skies. We continue to
follow this developing story. We'll come back and we're in
some tech issues.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
There, just hard to hear.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
We can see the terrifying, incredible visuals behind you as
smoke continues to or off the ridge there, and we
can hear the helicopters actively working in the region. So
we will get back to you shortly, we'll talk more
about what's happening with the smoke that Sky has been
talking about. We have been able to see it, smell

(05:16):
it from several regions across this nation. Wildfire smoke from
the Prairies is forecast to fill the skies from here
on the island all the way to Charlottetown with gritty,
hazy dust. Environment Canada says the smoke is causing or
expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility that

(05:36):
can fluctuate.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
And very hour by hour.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
The statements and warnings stretch from our province as far
as Prince Edward Island, southern parts of Northwest Territories, as
well as much of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario also affected.
It comes as more than seven hundred wildfires burn across
our country, including the one that Sky has been following
here on the island. The Weather Agency says poor air

(06:01):
quality can cause eyes, nose, and throat irritation, while more
serious but less common symptoms include chest pains and severe cough.
And will continue to follow the story throughout this broadcast.
In other news, a Nanaimo man is praising the quick
and efficient work of local fire crews after a taxi
went up in flames this morning.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
He says it appears no one was injured.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
After vehicle caught fire on Halliburton Street near Chase River Road.
According to the witness, the taxi driver was able to
pull over to the side of the road as smoke
became evident, he says, not long after the vehicle caught fire.
He goes on to say the flames took off too
fast for anyone to try and tackle the fire with

(06:44):
fire extinguishers. He wasn't sure if the taxi driver had
any passengers in the vehicle when it went up in smoke.
A three point nine magnitude earthquake has hit off the
coast of our province. Earthquakes Canada says the quake struck
around eight six twenty this morning. It was recorded at
a depth of fifteen kilometers just west of Haida Gwai.

(07:05):
The agency's web page says there are no reports of
damage and at the magnitude of three point nine. This
coming office tsunami advisory earlier this week after an eight
point eight magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia on
Tuesday sent waves rolling over the Pacific Ocean. The advisory
was later canceled, but BC's Emergency Management Minister says the

(07:26):
incident was a reminder to always be prepared for a
big quake closer to home. Well, a disturbing incident caught
on camera in Nanaimo shows a cyclist being shoved across
an oncoming traffic lane by a passing motorcyclist, causing him
to crash and hit his head on a sidewalk Saturday evening.

(07:46):
The shocking video, which has been widely shared on Facebook,
shows the man riding a bicycle with a trailer attached
to it, attempting to make a left turn near the
corner of Departure Bay Road and Granite Park Avenue around.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
Eight ten well.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
A group of three motorcyclists can then be seen going
past the cyclist on his right, with the lead rider
appearing to intentionally push the man, causing him to crash
violently to the ground. A man driving in the opposite
direction when the camera is on his vehicle, capturing the
entire thing before he got out and helped the injured cyclist,

(08:20):
who he estimated to be between sixty and seventy years old.
The driver and the cyclist reported the incident to police,
who have opened a file for the case, and that
he submitted the surveillance video to investigators and.

Speaker 4 (08:33):
I'm hoping they find the guy in there's some kind
of repercussion.

Speaker 3 (08:37):
I mean, he shouldn't be able to get away with that.

Speaker 1 (08:40):
I feel like, you know, if this was my grandfather
and somebody pushed him over, I'd be just absolutely livid.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
The video the story of sparked outrage in the local
biking community, with many identifying the lead motorcyclist bike as
a white Suzuki. Victoria police say a female suspect was
arrested after allegedly throwing a glass bottle at a mother
and her baby in the city's downtown around five forty
five on July twenty seven, afterr witnesses say they saw

(09:07):
a woman throw a glass bottle towards a woman and
her baby. Police say the bottle did not make contact.
The detachment says police quickly arrested the suspect in the assault,
which is believed to be random. However, the mom left
with her baby before officers arrived, and now investigators are
seeking to identify the woman as they continue their investigation.

(09:28):
Port Hardy's hospital's emergency department is temporarily closed after equipment
issues forced Island Health to suspend services today and will
reopen tomorrow at seven in the morning. While the ER
is shut down, all other inpatient services at the hospital.

Speaker 3 (09:46):
Remain up and running.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
Island Health is urging anyone experiencing a medical emergency to
call nine to one one or, if possible, travel to
the next closest emergency department at Port McNeil Hospital. Island
Health is apologizing for the service disruption, saying it acknowledge
this is not an ideal situation for the community. The
health authority did not specify what equipment failure led to

(10:10):
the er closure. A Canadian folk singer and award winning
children's performer who calls Vancouver Island home has died.

Speaker 1 (10:19):
Ocean.

Speaker 4 (10:20):
Ocean, so damn blue blue, No thing that that ocean
cannot do.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
I tell you, Rick Scott, the JUNO nominated folk singer,
writer and producer, sold tens of thousands of children's songs.
Scott was also part of the iconic folk trio Pie Pumpkin,
who pioneered rogue Folk in our province in the mid
seventies and reunited in nineteen eighty eight after a twenty
five year hiatus. In twenty nineteen, he was inducted into

(10:47):
the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, his family posting on
his website, Scott died peacefully in his Vancouver Island home.

Speaker 3 (10:54):
He was seventy seven.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
A Victoria resident is asking the province to reevaluate its
Guide Dog and Service Dog Act. During her recent move
into the city, she ran into problems finding housing because
her service dog's certification.

Speaker 3 (11:11):
Here's Mackenzie read.

Speaker 6 (11:13):
Let's go for Barbe. LaRue, her dog, Charlie is more
than just a pet.

Speaker 5 (11:18):
He is my life.

Speaker 6 (11:19):
Charlie is her service dog, helping her cope with a
post traumatic stress injury she was diagnosed with eleven years ago.
LaRue was working on Parlament Hill when a shooter killed
Corporal Nathan Cirillo, who was guarding the National War Memorial
before storming Center Bloc.

Speaker 7 (11:35):
I had a.

Speaker 5 (11:37):
Security person in my office and he It was strange
because he went like this, and he goes, Bob, get
under your desk, there's been a shooting.

Speaker 4 (11:45):
And then I could hear pop pop pop.

Speaker 5 (11:47):
I could hear the voices being screamed, and the and
the commands being done.

Speaker 6 (11:54):
After struggling with fears of being back in the office,
she had her dog, Charlie, trained to be a service
dog so Courageous Companions Canada, a charity that trains and
connects service dogs with veterans and first responders.

Speaker 5 (12:06):
When I get stressed or anything, he'll start clawing on
my ankles or my knees, or he'll just sit there
and just stare at me, just glare at me and
to distract me. And then when I have him in
my arms, he pushes his body towards me.

Speaker 6 (12:28):
In December, she decided to make the move from Ottawa
to Victoria. That run into a number of roadblocks while
looking for a place to live.

Speaker 5 (12:35):
They'd flung the provincial Landlorders and Tennessee Act and they
would tell him, no, that's not a certified dog, because
it's not ADI.

Speaker 6 (12:45):
ADI short for Assistance Dogs International, is a US based
organization that can provide accreditation to service dog organizations and training.
According to the Minister of Public Safety, ADI has high
training standards that are in line with the Ministry certification
expectations and requirements. The executive director of Courageous Companions says
his organization opted to get its accreditation through another organization.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
Who we're formally accredited through the Canadian Accreditation Council of Canada.

Speaker 6 (13:16):
Dugas says that is good enough in several other Canadian
provinces like Alberta, so he's asked BC to recognize it
as well, but so far they've turned him down. He
says certification is important because it allows access to protections
like not having to pay a pet deposit on a
rental unit, something Luru has faced firsthand.

Speaker 5 (13:35):
So I said, fine it, I will pay the damage
deposit for the for the dog.

Speaker 6 (13:41):
The Ministry says dogs not trained through ADI can take
a test to obtain certification, but LaRue says her dog
is already highly trained. Plus the wait list is lengthy
and the test costs money.

Speaker 5 (13:52):
So money grab. Sorry, that's what I think it is.

Speaker 6 (13:56):
She hopes the province will reconsider adding more service dog
organizations like Courageous Companions to its accredited list, but that
doesn't look promising. In a statement to check News, the
Ministry says it has no plans to consider amendments to
the Service Dog Act or its regulations.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
Lots of events happening around the island this long weekend,
including the Wonderment Festival, celebrating its tenth anniversary. The music
fest goes all weekend in Victoria with this viz you're
seeing here from last night, just off the Johnson Street
Bridge at the song He's Park Plaza. Kicking off the
three day free event more tonight at Beacon Hill Park
and wraps up tomorrow at Bamfield Park in vic West.

Speaker 3 (14:42):
Those are all free, However, there are.

Speaker 2 (14:44):
Some ticketed shows happening in Victoria. You can head to
their website for more information. Another one of the big
events happening right now, of course, is Symphony Splash, our
own test fans stratten down in the Inner Harbor tonight.

Speaker 3 (14:56):
I know there's lots to talk about.

Speaker 2 (14:58):
That's fun and exciting that's happened there this evening test,
but also the conditions on our island right now are serious.

Speaker 7 (15:07):
Yes, Scott, So I'm pretty serious fire danger conditions on
Vancouver Island. But first I'm going to tell you about
Symphony Splash. After a five year hiatus, it is back
this year now. It was overcast for most of the
day in Victoria today, but just before five the sun
started to come out. So conditions down here in the
Inner Harbor absolutely beautiful of the Youth Orchestra played at
three thirty. The big show tonight is at seven thirty,
and the stage is set up so you can see

(15:30):
over here. The barge is ready to go with the
stage for the Symphony on it, and it should be
lots of fun. So crowds are starting to gather. Lots
of people lined up really early. One person told me
they lined up for an hour and a half to
get a stamp on their hand. And to have that stamp,
you need that stamp to be able to come down
to the lower Causeway here. There's great seats and blanket
room here, but you had to have that stamp on
your hand. So there's also seating at the upper Causeway.

(15:51):
People are grabbing seats wherever they can, and my new
friends over here have some of the best seats in town.
So Brook, Janet and Jewels are here. And what do
you love about Symphony's flat?

Speaker 8 (16:01):
Oh, we were just talking about how amazing it is
to have something in the middle of the summer here,
you know, because it's the best time of year to
be here and something that's local is just amazing to
see everyone come out for it. It's all within walking distance.
It's so just beautiful and peaceful and it's just amazing.

Speaker 7 (16:18):
And there's lots of road closures as well, government all
the way to Superior from Humboldt, so people can walk around.
There's food trucks, lots of things to do down here
as well. How early did you have to get here
to get this yoga mat seating?

Speaker 9 (16:29):
Well, they opened the entrance at about two thirty, so
that's I was down here before then because there was
lots of concerts going on earlier.

Speaker 7 (16:37):
So yeah, what was the earlier concert?

Speaker 3 (16:39):
Like, it was fun.

Speaker 9 (16:40):
It was a woman that was teaching people square dancing
and people were up there was on the lawn of
the legislature and people were up there dancing and she
was called they'd never done it before, she was teaching them. Awesome.

Speaker 7 (16:51):
And now this is your first splash, you're visiting from Arizona.
What are you most excited about.

Speaker 5 (16:58):
I'm just so excited to see, like Brooks says, the
piece among the people and how kind everyone is.

Speaker 3 (17:05):
But the culture is amazing.

Speaker 5 (17:07):
I was here last night and the Latin band was fantastic.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
So I left here.

Speaker 4 (17:14):
It was like we were at the end of the show.

Speaker 1 (17:17):
Everybody got up and.

Speaker 4 (17:18):
We were dancing together and just magic.

Speaker 8 (17:23):
Also.

Speaker 7 (17:23):
That's awesome. So we'll have much more coming from Splash.
A little bit later, I'll have your Bcday forecast and
beyond good news, we finally have some rain in our forecast,
not just for the North Island in the West Coast,
we also have rain in the forecast for the East
Island and hopefully the South Island as well, which will
really help our fire danger.

Speaker 2 (17:39):
Scott Okay, thanks so much, Tess Well. The Prime Minister
and the US President are expected to talk this week.
Optimism from the FEDS over trade talks is Canada and
the US remain without a deal.
