A man is arrested after a vehicle crashes into a
Bowser home, starting a fire that ultimately destroys it. Check
News starts now, Good evening, Thanks very much for joining
us tonight. One person is in custody and a house
(01:17):
near Bowser is a write off after a major fire.
The chaos erupted on Thanksgiving Day as many people, including
the firefighters who responded, were about to sit down for
Turkey dinner. Dean Stoltz reports this is.
Speaker 7 (01:30):
The scene on isle Wood Drive south of Bowser Monday afternoon,
Flames ripping through the roof of a large home.
Speaker 4 (01:38):
As we came up to the place, we know it
was completely engulfed, completely engulfed.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
I heard a noise and turned around to see a
big cloud of smoke coming from this hose over here.
Fire department arrived, everything going crazy.
Speaker 7 (01:52):
The Bullhorn Bay Fire Department responds with mutual aid from
dash Wood, Qualicum Beach and Coombs. The house going up
in flames. When they get.
Speaker 6 (02:01):
Here, heavy smoke from the front side, but the backside
was free burning with flames on both floors coming out
the windows. And then it progressed from there and it
spread throughout the entire home.
Speaker 7 (02:13):
It takes firefighters several hours to put out the flames,
and this is the damage today. Both floors got it
at the rear of the home. Police say they were
notified at four thirty pm and told that a vehicle
had driven into the home, and moments after that were
updated that the home was now on fire. While officers
were responding, further information was received that the homeowner and
(02:36):
occupants were being attacked. Multiple larcim P members responded and
the suspect was arrested at the scene and taken to
Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. One neighbor, who did not want
to be interviewed, said they heard lots of yelling before
the fire started. Did you see someone come out in
the handcuffs?
Speaker 3 (02:53):
I did, Yes, I did.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
There's a man that walked him right over here and
down past my host to a police card.
Speaker 7 (03:00):
On the road here.
Speaker 8 (03:01):
Do you know who that was?
Speaker 7 (03:02):
I had no idea. Police say the investigation is ongoing,
but that Dempsey Alan Meekin was arrested and is now
charged with dangerous operation of the conveyance, arson, with disregard
for human life, assault with a weapon, and mischief. Police
ad there is no outstanding risk to the public.
Speaker 4 (03:21):
Yeah. It was informed to us that the sun had
caused the fire and mental health is the.
Speaker 6 (03:26):
Issue, and there were no injuries and all residents were
taken care of.
Speaker 7 (03:32):
After the fire, bo Hornbay firefighters were quick to respond
because they were just about to sit down for a
turkey dinner at their hall. When the fire broke.
Speaker 6 (03:40):
Out, We just turned the oven off and came here.
Speaker 7 (03:43):
They ended up eating it at twelve thirty this morning
after getting back to their hall.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
A woman is being held under the Mental Health Act
after the attempt at abduction of a young child in
Victoria this morning. It happened while the five year old
was getting ready for school, but moments afterwards members of
the community stepped up coming to the child's aid. Mary
Griffin reports.
Speaker 9 (04:04):
A tense situation unfolding during the morning rush hour Tuesday
in the nine hundred block of King's Road. This woman
is walking away after witnesses say she grabbed a five
year old child. We are obscuring her identity as she
has not been criminally charged. The child was with their uncle,
Anna's sibling at the time.
Speaker 10 (04:24):
I was just sitting in my vehicle waiting for a
message for my friend, and I witnessed the lady kind
of run up to the three, grabbed the youngest one
and just run away.
Speaker 9 (04:34):
Jeremy Useman says as he watched the woman run with
a child, he knew he had to jump into action.
Speaker 10 (04:40):
The lady was running down the street and I drove
up to her, a nice doctor. I said, hey, like,
this looks like you just subducted a child. Is everything okay?
And she's like, she's just going off about some story
about the kid was neglected or something along that line.
And then thankfully the family caught up to us at
that point.
Speaker 9 (04:57):
The child's uncle, Charles Lefler, says the woman appeared to
be watching him get the children ready for school, just
outside their home in the Evergreen Terrace social housing development.
Speaker 11 (05:09):
She was at the bench the entire time, watching us
while I was putting her sletter on okay, And then
all of a sudden, I was finished putting her letter
and she came up right behind me and just picked
her up.
Speaker 9 (05:18):
Leffler quickly alerted the child's mother, Corey Lynne Jelliker, who
ran out of her home and approached the woman holding
her child. The woman continued to tell Jelliker the child
was in danger and she was saving the child.
Speaker 5 (05:32):
You don't touch somebody else's kid and all of that,
and then he called the cops too. He called the cops,
and then she was just going off and she's a
victim because she thought the kids were in danger, and
the kids are in danger and she's saving them.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
It's like, oh, you're not.
Speaker 9 (05:47):
An officer on scene tells check News. The woman was
apprehended under the Mental Health Act. Victoria Police later issued
a statement saying the incident is under active investigation, but
we're unable to provide any further details. The family says
the child, while distraught, was not physically harmed and was
able to get on the school bus.
Speaker 4 (06:10):
Motorcycle deaths in BC have dropped to a five year low,
but a late season spike in dangerous riding has police
ramping up enforcement to try and prevent another deadly surge.
BC Highway Patrol says sixteen people died in July and August.
That's nearly half of all motorcycle deaths this year. Police
say speed is the single biggest contributing factor, with impairment
(06:32):
and distraction close behind. They say they'll be ramping up
enforcement over the next month as riding season draws to
a close. So far this year, there have been twenty
seven motorcycle fatalities throughout the province, with fifty four in
all of twenty twenty four, forty in twenty twenty three,
and forty eight in twenty twenty two. A Vancouver Island
(06:52):
family is fighting for change after they tragically lost their
son to a severe allergic reaction. The family has started
a petition asking lawmakers to have EPI pens accessible in
all community locations. Chattis Leo has the story.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
He was born over one hundred milehouse and we moved
to the island when he was four months old.
Speaker 12 (07:11):
Sitting in front of his photo, Jericha Macarter remembers her
fourteen year old son, Malachi Troy Flores is kind, sweet,
caring and always thinking of others. On September twenty eighth,
Malachi died after suffering from severe anaphylactic shock after grabbing
a snack at an Island hockey arena. Malachi was allergic
(07:31):
to cashoes.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
On that Sunday after hockey was when he went to
the food establishment and was grabbing a quick snack. And
he's usually so good, like he always looks at all
his labels, granola bar's cookies.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
He usually doesn't eat different things.
Speaker 12 (07:47):
Malachi picked up a granola bar he thought was safe,
had two bites and started to feel sick shortly after.
Because they had traveled to the hockey rink in somebody
else's car. They didn't have an easily accessible EpiPen in
the glove box like they would at home.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
I was in the same complexism, so I like jumped
to the track and I call nine one one, and
we started heading towards an ambulance or to towards a hospital,
like we're trying to get to the hospital which is
thirteen minutes away, or to an ambulance, whatever we could
meet first.
Speaker 12 (08:14):
Tragically, there wasn't enough time and Malachi died before he
could get the medical help he needed. Now, just a
few weeks later, his mother is advocating for change so
that nobody else will have to experience this kind of
unimaginable loss, like all.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
First ay kits and all food establishment should.
Speaker 12 (08:32):
Have point Malachi's bill, Macarter wants policymakers to ensure EpiPens
are as accessible in BC as an a lock zone,
the medication used to reverse drug overdoses. For Macarter, this
means ensuring all food establishments, schools, first aid kits, and
firefighters carry epineferent injectors so anyone experiencing a severe allergic
(08:52):
reaction can receive quick and potentially life saving intervention.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
I've had some doctors reach out and say he's reach
out to the MLA up here.
Speaker 12 (09:03):
Although there is no current province wide programs, some institutions
like VICK have taken it upon themselves to provide etpeneferent
injectors in training to campus security guards. Check News has
reached out to the Ministry of Health for our comment,
but did not hear back in time. As passionate as
Malachi was about hockey, his mother hopes that the general
(09:26):
public will feel passionate for her cause to help keep
the memory of her son alive and help save future lives.
Speaker 4 (09:35):
It could soon be a lot easier to pay for
bus rides. BC Transit announcing today it's planning to roll
out tap payments for debit and credit cards on board buses.
It's something users have been calling for for years, but
as Mackenzie Read reports, there is still some work to
be done before it becomes a reality.
Speaker 13 (09:53):
You can tap your debit or credit card at a cafe,
you can tap your card at the grocery store, and
now soon you will be be able to tap to
pay on the bus.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
It's definitely needed.
Speaker 13 (10:03):
BC Transit is now running tests on its system to
bring contactless payments on board buses. This will allow customers
to pay by cash EUMO card, through the Umo app,
or by tapping their preferred payment card or mobile wallet.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
Today.
Speaker 14 (10:18):
I've been in sure to change, and it would have
been nice to be able to put your card in
there and tell you good.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
Yeah, I think I think it would be good.
Speaker 5 (10:25):
I think it's good. I think it's gonna make it
a lot easier for you to actually take the bus
more consistently.
Speaker 13 (10:33):
It's a change transit riders have been asking for for years,
with many wondering why it's taken so long to implement
and why it came after Umo was launched in twenty
twenty three.
Speaker 7 (10:43):
I think it should have come at the same time.
Speaker 14 (10:44):
At the very least, we always need to get Eumo
in place first. The introduction of the mobile app and
reloadable card is an easier process for us to get
over the line.
Speaker 13 (10:55):
According to BC Transit, Umo basically laid the foundation for
the technology and card reader needed to implement onboard debit
and credit card payments. Now the new payment system can
be added to the computer systems. However, there's a.
Speaker 14 (11:08):
Really really high standard of security compliance that we have
to meet, and so we've been working with our vendor
over the past year plus to do that.
Speaker 13 (11:16):
Because of this, the new payment options won't happen instantly.
Speaker 14 (11:19):
We want to go through a series of verification exercises
just to make sure that what we're seeing is matching
our expectations.
Speaker 13 (11:25):
While those exercises are taking place, UMO users will notice
their saved payment information on the app will be deleted
and you will need to re enter it before the
next purchase date. Bus riders should be able to tap
their debit and credit cards to pay by early twenty
twenty six.
Speaker 4 (11:42):
What the Major League Baseball season has turned into a
dream matchup for fans here on Vancouver Island. The Blue
Jays are taking on the Seattle Mariners with the spots
in the World Series on the line. If it feels
strange cheering against Canada's team, you're not alone. Jordan Cunningham
has more.
Speaker 11 (12:00):
It's all a bit faded now, just like that official
World Series ball you may or may not have on
the shelf from ninety two swinging about and the ache
is certainly dry. Since the last time the Blue Jays
won the World Series in ninety three, Blue James, well,
but the American League Championship Series between the Blue Jays
and Mariners has many on Vancouver Islands seeking direction when
(12:21):
it comes to baseball. Nearest isn't always dearest.
Speaker 6 (12:25):
I gotta say the Blue Jays. And because it's part
of the Canadian culture, who are you going for?
Speaker 8 (12:29):
Jays?
Speaker 15 (12:29):
Definitely Jays.
Speaker 11 (12:32):
For Kai Hoshizaki and others. At Lambert Park's Baseball Academy,
it's a stare down between fans of our nearest neighbors,
the Seattle Mariners and Canada's diamond darlings. Is it getting
annoying with your Jay's friends?
Speaker 14 (12:44):
Yes, it is.
Speaker 5 (12:45):
Actually the fact.
Speaker 11 (12:46):
That the Mariners have the Jays in an O two whole
after two series opening losses in Toronto means desperation mode
for the Jays. Are they dead and bury?
Speaker 10 (12:53):
I don't think so. I mean it's yeah, and it's
not like necessarily two gol until it's three nothing.
Speaker 11 (13:01):
Are you saying it ain't over till it's over?
Speaker 3 (13:04):
I'd say so.
Speaker 5 (13:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (13:05):
Sam Shaw agrees. He's a Blue Jays prospect born and
raised in Victoria. And thanks to Sam's Game three breakdown,
you don't even have to watch.
Speaker 1 (13:13):
Gladdie RBI double Kirk.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
Kirk's gonna get a knock, Barterer's gonna.
Speaker 14 (13:21):
Rip one in the gap, and then Varsha's gonna hit
a home run five to two Jays.
Speaker 11 (13:25):
As far as historical local connections go, the Mariners have
local product Michael Saunders. The problem is he also played
for the Jays, so he's no help at all. But
Kai won't be caught with his bat on his shoulder
in this debate? Is it okay to share for the
Mirrors only if you live in BC? Don Taylor addressed
this trees in his take this Morning on Donnie and Dolly.
Speaker 8 (13:45):
Blue jayser Counterada's team. Mariners are BC's team.
Speaker 11 (13:48):
But if I don't want the Jays to win, am
I a bad panadiot?
Speaker 8 (13:55):
No, you're not, and I'm sure a lot of people
will tell you are.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
He says.
Speaker 11 (13:59):
Backing the under underdogs is never a bad thing.
Speaker 8 (14:02):
The Mariners have only made the playoffs six times in
their existence. They make the Canucks look like the greatest
sports franchise in the world.
Speaker 11 (14:13):
Game three is must watch.
Speaker 8 (14:15):
Money was no issue.
Speaker 11 (14:16):
Would you hop on a hell of jet tomorrow?
Speaker 15 (14:17):
Well that's the bets. I have a math testor.
Speaker 11 (14:20):
But there are no wrong answers on Checkpoint.
Speaker 4 (14:25):
Tonight, we're asking who should Vancouver Island baseball fans be
cheering for. You can vote on our website Checknews dot
Ca and we'll have results a little bit later in
tonight's newscast. Well test for me, it's a win win
because I'd be thrilled if the Jays went to the
World Series, and because the Mariners have never been, I
would be equally as thrilled if the Mariners went. But
I have to say I'm a Jays fan and I
(14:46):
can't help.
Speaker 15 (14:47):
But how about you. I'm more of a Mariners fan.
But given the state of relations right now, I think
we have to root for the Jays. We have to
root for Canada, right.
Speaker 4 (14:55):
Maybe so there is a very very talented Canadian on
the Mariners Foster though and Nailers, so we'll have to
see it happen.
Speaker 15 (15:02):
Wouldn't that be great if Canada won the World Series? Yes,
yes it would. Sure Donald Trump wouldn't appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (15:09):
All Right, what are we looking at the weather?
Speaker 5 (15:11):
Let's look at nothing.
Speaker 15 (15:12):
Here you go our satellite radar high pressure dominating for
Vancouver Island. So, as expected, another sunny, gorgeous day to
day above seasonal conditions for some areas chilli or overnight
lows for other areas. That trend will continue tomorrow as well.
So many areas around that sort of fourteen fifteen degree
mark today and we can expect warmer temperatures tomorrow. Parts
of the island might get as high as eighteen degrees,
(15:33):
so not bad. For mid October. Conditions are looking pretty good.
I'll break down what you can expect because there is
a risk of frost for parts of the island because
we have some really chilly overnight lows for some areas
hovering around that freezing mark, so temperatures that are more
likely in the dead of winter as overnight lows versus
this time in the fall. But for self Vancouver Island,
our temperatures are still hanging on overnight. We're not freezing
(15:54):
like some other parts of the island. So much more
on that coming up. Of First, today's weather photos come
from check viewer Richard Arthur, who took this great fall
shot of sand Bag Lake in Strathcona Park over the
Thanksgiving Long weekend. This is a morning view of Tenant Lake.
Richard said the weather was absolutely spectacular. Richard and his
son climbed Mount Myra and camped overnight at Tenant Lake,
(16:18):
which is about half way up, and chillier conditions overnight
for sure, but an absolutely beautiful day and forget the
turkey and grab a broomstick. Thanksgiving weekend might have looked
more like Halloween and Ladysmith La valentine scent in these
shots of the Witch's paddle at Transfer Beach. She says,
Saturday's rain made.
Speaker 4 (16:36):
It look very spooky.
Speaker 15 (16:39):
So yeah, we've had a little bit of everything over
the last few days as expected, even snow with those
higher elevations, thankfully, no snow at sea level. No snow
on our forecast at this point either, but chance of
drizzle or fog depending on where you are. And I'll
tell you when you can expect the sunshine to end
and cooler temperatures in that rain to start moving in
as we get into more of a fall weather pattern.
Speaker 4 (16:56):
Stacy, all right, we'll see in a few minutes.
Speaker 15 (16:58):
Test, thanks so much.
Speaker 4 (17:00):
Also still to come on check tonight devastation in Alaska.
One person is dead and more missing as indigenous communities
are hammered by typhoon. How long story's coming up? So
is this one?
Speaker 7 (17:11):
We're all in for Team Canada.
Speaker 12 (17:13):
We're gonna push hard.
Speaker 9 (17:14):
I think a bully only respects for US.
Speaker 4 (17:17):
New US tariffs on imported timber, kitchen cabinets and a
polstered furniture came into effect today. After a short break,
we'll tell you how that change is impacting industries here
on Vancouver Island.
