Speaker 1 (00:00):
Success in life.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
Come what is it you want? Give your best effort,
show me what you got.
Speaker 1 (00:04):
If you want to be a success, you've gotta have.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
It's the Burt Pathyany Coaching Shoe presented by Komy and
Shepherd Reelders. And here's your host, Jeff Siedel and er
head football coach Burt Pathy, W MOE and the Molar
Broadcasting Network present the Bert Bathyani Show featuring the head
coach of Moeller Football Bert Bathyani. I am Jeff Schneidel
(00:31):
class of nineteen eighty four Molar High School. And the
show is sponsored by Komy and Shepherd Realtors to handle
all of your real estate needs. And it is late
July and we're getting ready, as most Molar fans know,
to tune up for another football season. And it's always
great to sit down with the head coach of the Crusaders,
(00:53):
Coach Bathyani. Coach, how are you doing on this last
warm day of July.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
We're gonna say, yeah, a lot, but we have an
I haven't really noticed the heat that much because we've
been going in the morning, So we've been lucky from
that standpoint, staying out of the heat and getting a
lot of good work in without putting our guys at risk.
And I tell you what, when you have to go
in the afternoon and deal with that, that can just
put a whole damper on practice of trying to get
(01:21):
good working and getting guys acclimated to the heat. But
then also you got to dial it back sometimes too,
So it's been a blessing for us to be able
to go in the mornings and knock it out and
get some good work in. So first official day, if
football starts tomorrow, August first, and we're ready to roll.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Does it feel like there's better attention early in the
morning versus kind of like if you have to wait
around all day to kind of get going. I mean
you kind of kind of not get lazy, you're kind
of getting tired of sitting around. You want to just
get going. But in the morning, man, you got to
probably get up and get here and let's go.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
I think if you were in the afternoon during the
summer and you didn't have anything in the morning, it
would kind of feel like that. But when you get
to the school year, you have school all day, so
usually you're itching to get out of school and get
the practice. So I think that's a different mindset, and
I think whatever it's, what your body is used to
is usually the best best rhythm for you from that standpoint.
(02:19):
So if you used to going in the morning, that's
what you're used to doing, and you're more alert if
you stay on that same routine. But if it fluctuates,
that's when you really get out of whack.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Coach, last year didn't end like we wanted to. But
the reality is what a tremendous year, a successful year,
an exciting year for mole or football. And I know,
you know the time has gone by, but any chance
to kind of think back in those terms about how
really great that season was, and I mean it's entertainment,
(02:52):
it's finest to be in my opinion.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Yeah, you don't want to take away from you know,
last year and all the great things that happen, you know,
and we had a great senior class at the ton
of great leadership. And like every season a group goes on,
another group comes in and you know you're only with
that team for one year, even though this is my
third year going on them all, they're like every single
year is that specific team and you know, guys graduating,
(03:17):
new guys come in. That's time for new guys to shine.
So you always look back with fond memories and you're
excited about the and thankful for the good times. But
at the end of the year, only one team's happy,
no matter what, it doesn't matter, just one team's happy.
So everyone else is hungry and working hard to get
the back where we were and then play win one
(03:39):
more game than the last year. I think that's your
mindset every year.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Coach for yourself, as far as you know, the first
year you came in, it was kind of like mid
spring already, and it's kind of like, Okay, we gotta
get gone. And last year was kind of like your
first full circle is and I know you're always tweaking
things to do things maybe a little better. I know
it's kind of the motto there. Yeah, but does it
does it feel like a lot more like settled in
(04:04):
since you've been the whole around the calendar, you know,
with the team and with the school versus I mean
obviously the first year jumping in kind of midway.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
Yeah, I don't. I don't like saying the world. I
go back and forth on that too, because you don't
use the words settle down, or comfortable, because that's like
the you never want to get comfortable in anything. So
there is definitely familiarity. I think there's rhythm where you
know what to expect, you know what it looks like,
sounds like, feels like. This senior class has been with
(04:34):
me for three years now, so they've been through it, right.
They know kind of the expectation in those situations and
what we want and how we do things, and now
they're able to kind of pass that wisdom on to
the younger guys to bring them along. So I think
there's definitely more rhythm where nothing's new. There's still new
(04:55):
things that we tweak, but the newness of like year one,
it's definitely not like that, what's.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Whatever, And let's let's be real. When it's senior year,
you want to leave your mark. Yeah, uh, you know
with the school and with with the program, and so
it's a little bit not urgency, but I think you
can not reminis but you think, man, this is probably
this is really good place to be, this is really
good program to be in. I mean, if you're thinking
in terms like that and then you think, wow, this
(05:20):
is like the last go round. We're freshman year it
seemed like, when's this ever gonna When am I ever
gonna get there? Now you're here, and and uh uh,
not that the ends in sight, but this is the
very most real moment.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
I think there's a wake up call for every young
man that goes into their senior year of high school football,
because high school football is so special because it's it's finite,
and you usually grow up thinking about dreaming about playing
for that team that your uncle's, your dad, your brother,
your grandfather played for, and you want an opportunity to
(05:53):
run out and wear those colors and play for that
team on Friday night. And then all of a sudden,
you get there your senior year and you're thinking where
did the last three years go? So there is that
urgency that you spoke about, and then you realize that, man,
this went by so fast and now it's August. It's
like I really only have four months left, no matter
how you slice it, like this is it. And then
(06:14):
guys go off and they graduate, they go off and
play college ball, or they go to their next sport,
and that that's the beauty of high school football. I think,
where it is finite and there is an end to it.
But you try to sit back and soak in the
moment as much as you can, especially as a senior,
because you just never know when like that's really gonna end.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
And it's even more special here at Molor High School
a man's and it's treated that way and both football
and school and the whole environment, so it's a it's
a beautiful thing. So all right, we're gonna take our
first break, and then we're gonna come back and just
talk a little bit about the off season, and we'll
say the preseason as far as what's coming up, and
our final segment will just talk about the upcoming season
(06:52):
and of course the most special day of the year,
Victory Day. I'm Jeff Schneiedel here with coach Matthew Annie.

I'm Jeff Schneidel with the Class of Molar nineteen eighty
four and also with Komy and Shepherd realtor a sponsoring
this show for all your real estate needs coach. As
(08:19):
we talked about a little bit in the intro, but
the importance of the offseason has, I'll say, in the
over the years in football has just become more and
more important and almost like part of the season.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
Yeah, in essence, Yeah, I mean really, our season kicks
off that first Monday. We're able to get back in
January when we get back from Christmas break. So we
were fortunate enough to have a long season last year,
and I give them all of December off to rest
and recuperate and have that time with their family and
then also gives us time to get prep for the
next year and get a plan rolling. But yeah, we
(08:54):
get back at it right away, and we're lifting three
days a week January and February all the way until
like that baseball season kind of picks up, and then
we go to four days a week and then we
add in some some spring workouts and the weather gets
busy or weather gets better too when we're out on
the field. So there's like a segment I think, to
each part of the calendar, but to your point, Yeah,
(09:16):
in January, that's really what our season begins, and we
start getting in the weight room and getting after it,
and you're really starting to lay the foundation of your team.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Well, and what I understand, it's such a good structure.
It's you're not just coming in, Hey, let's just go
throw this around, do this a little bit. I mean,
there's a reason and a purpose and you're building towards
everything and that's the beauty of it. And your whole
coaching staff's involved.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
Yeah. Yeah, we have. I don't know how a lot
of other schools do it, but we have as many
coaches in our weight room as possible. And when I
ascribe to guys when I'm hiring them, is you become
a strength coach too. When you work for our team,
and you're gonna be in the weight room and you
might not know a lot about what's going on. But
if you can just re say everything the strength coach
is saying and help us get things organized and we
(09:58):
get more hands on debt and then you're able to
develop this relationship with the players is the most important
part from my standpoint. But yeah, there's a thought out
process from January all the way to December, and our
strength coaching myself are in constant communication about what is
best for this group right here, right now, and we'll
(10:19):
have a plan where we block sections out where there's
a certain emphasis of the intensity, the rep schemes, what
we're trying to accomplish, and sometimes that fluctuate. Sometimes we
were able to stay on track, but the one consistent
thing is whatever is best for our guys. That's what
we're trying to do. And we're not scared to kind
of get out of the box and change things up
just to provide a different stimulus form to give them
(10:41):
the best experience possible.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
And you're referring to coach Chris Gray, yep, and now
this is this is really his kind of full full
cycle through. Yeah, if you will as he came on
last spring, so that's kind of got to be kind
of cool as far as you know, he's kind of
you know, you're all in conjunction building that program.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
I think with any organization, alignment is the biggest key
to success. And I think with the addition of coach
Hayes in the athletic department, Chris Gray and the strengthen
conditioning and now President knee House, I think there's a
ton of alignment from all those different all those different
positions to be rowing in the right direction and making
(11:21):
sure that we're providing the best product possible for our
men so they can be successful on the football field
and really just give them that experience.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
And football in a way is a little bit of
a unicorn because you're working out in January in February,
you're not really going out and okay, let's line up
and you know, offensive line. You're not playing a game,
Whereas I mean golf, you can go out and play
and you're not in season baseball you're playing travel games
and all and all that same with basketball football, I
mean not in a bad way. It's just you don't
(11:52):
really line up, but you do get in things like
seven and seven drills.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
Yeah, we'll do that later, but you're not doing that
in January and February. I mean, as a basketball player,
you can practice dribbling, you can practice shooting all year long,
right like the development the developmental calendar for a basketball player,
it really is never ending. And nowadays with baseball that's
kind of the same deal too, because you can always
be swinging a bat January through December, like the whole
(12:18):
calendar year. You can be doing that stuff. In football,
it's hard, right, like to get twenty two guys in
a spot with enough space to keep it safe. And then,
excuse me, what the physicality that goes on during the season,
Like your body needs to recuperate throughout the rest of
the year as well, So if you try to play
football thirty sixty five, like, your body's just not going
(12:40):
to last. But I always joke around and say, in
the offseason, you could take a young man and put
him in the cafeteria and you can put him in
the weight room and he can become a better football player.
But you couldn't say that about soccer. You can't say
that about baseball or basketball because they have to focus
on those skills specific to their sport to get better
at it with us, like for a d lineman, a linebacker,
(13:02):
an offensive lineman, building that strength and size, you can
actually become a better football player by.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
Doing that well and understanding the game of football. I mean,
it is a pretty finite season. And I'll say, I
mean I've seen many kids that play baseball almost year
round and they get to like kind of burn out.
I mean they get to fourteen fifteen and they're like,
I'm kind of sick of the game because I'm just
played it too much. But that's the one cool thing
with football. I Mean, you can't play and you're not
(13:28):
playing in the spring and the summer, and it kind
of builds up, but it makes all each game very special.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
Yeah, And I think that's a good point that you made,
is we really try to push our kids to do
multiple sports so they can get away and do all
those things. And we got a ton of guys that
do baseball and they do football right, and they do basketball,
they do football, they do track, they do football, they
do La cross, they do football, they do wrestling, they
do football right. So I think it's good to get
(13:54):
away from the sport and focus on another one. And
kind of practice something else, because skills will help transfer
into in your sport as well. I think Matt would
be the first one to say, is like throwing a
footballs help with his arm strength throwing a baseball and
vice versa. Right, And like you talk to Cooper mccutch
and like playing Mueller basketball has definitely helped with his
(14:14):
feet and being a football player. So and you look
at our guys who did wrestling right and the guys
who track and field, like Land and Adams had a
really good track season, Matt Foegler had an awesome track career,
and those have made them better in their their sport
they're going off to play college in and it's just
really good. I think to do multiple sports, practice different skills,
(14:36):
and I think it's good for your mental health, You're
good for your physical health, and just good overall.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
In a sport like wrestling that I think it's enormous
what they can take out of that and apply it
on the football field. Oh yeah, and you know, just
an incredible wrestling program as well. And I mean, so no,
the kids need some diversion and it just makes them
better in the things that they're working, whatever season it is.
Ye absolutely with that. So all right, So, uh, in
(15:03):
regards to preseason, we know, we we do have a
scrimmage coming up, full scrimmage at Milford on Friday the.
Speaker 1 (15:10):
Eighth, and actually the scrimmage will be at Moeller that
will be it'll be at Moellers. That got changed there.
I think they're doing something with their lights, so they'll
be Mueller on on Friday.
Speaker 2 (15:18):
Oh, we're gonna turn on our new lights. Yeah, we're
just kidding with that. Don't anybody run with that anyway. Okay,
so that's been flipped here. And then of course going
up and playing at at Maslin yep, and uh, you
know that's good competition and that's I mean, you know,
I mean, we're gonna have it. We'll talk about the
schedule in a little bit, but uh, you know, going
up and playing the Tigers up there. But also the
(15:40):
just the benefit of going to uh Paul Brown Tiger Stadium,
probably for the kids, that's I mean, that's just that's
just good stuff.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
Yeah, that'll be my first time going up to that stadium.
But I've seen it on film. It it looks like
a you know, an incredible high school stadium. And obviously
they're a really good football team and coach Moore gets
his guys prepared and raid to roll. So it's a
good brahma for us to see where we stand.
Speaker 2 (16:01):
It's just a beautiful thing seeing that whole town, all
all of them. I used to travel there and week
they'd play Molar, there'd be signs up on Monday and
Tuesday all Molar. You know, that's like the whole town, Systey.
I don't think Molar is isolated.
Speaker 1 (16:14):
I don't pretty much.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
You're over there playing, but those are things coming up.
So we'll take a break here and then we'll be back.
We'll talk a little bit about the upcoming season and
some other things going on. As you're listening to the
Burg Bathyani Show featuring the head coach of Molar Football

take the field and be a Crusader for the day.
It is from five to seven pm. Checking is at
four thirty pm. If you have a young person that
would want to register, please email Molar Victory Day at

(17:20):
the Crusader Football program is this Saturday, August the second
Here at Molar High School. You're tuned into w MOE
and the Molar Broadcasting Network where you're listening to the
(17:43):
Bertbathyani Show featuring the head coach of Molar Football, Bert Bathyany.
I'm Jeff Schneiedel class of nineteen eighty four and the
show is sponsored by Comyan Shepherd Realtors, and I'm here
with coach Bathyany Is. Coach. The upcoming season is a
on us and uh, you know, par for the course.
I mean we have a we have a pretty solid
(18:05):
and uh i'll say tough schedule, but uh, we'll certainly
find out what we're made of.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
Our guys like playing in big games and it's been
a lot of fun and we think it prepares us
for the playoffs. And our guys have bought into that mindset,
and I mean we dropped three teams I think from
last year that we're not playing this year, and we've
added three state champions right, So we're playing Mount Carmel
out of Illinois who won the state championship. We're playing
(18:31):
Trinity out of Kentucky won the state championship, and then
Christ Presbyterian Academy won the state championship. And that is
all three right in a row, sandwich between Princeton and
Saint X and then you get into the gCO and
then Cleveland. We end the year with Mischgan here, so
it will be a gauntlet, but that's what our kids
like to do and we like playing that competition.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
Well, we go back to Ironton, which is just a
tremendous setup for high school football in the town is
you know, I mean, maybe a little better than what
Maslin does because they are all into that that river town,
great place and they're they're very good to us. And
then a new trip heading down just south of Nashville
down to Brentwood, uh to uh CPA I think as
(19:14):
it's referred to, and that'll be interesting as two teams
that haven't played each other.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
Yeah, so I heard enough about good things about them,
and we have a couple of games of them on
a couple game films from them from last year, so
they'll be really really good. And you know, for us,
we just take it one game at a time, Like
if you try to look ahead and look at all
those opponents, you're just you know, they'll be a completely
different team by that point as well. But we're excited
(19:39):
to kick it off. But right now, I just focus
on having a really good practice tomorrow and then getting
healthy and rate a role for Milford and then Masslin
then getting to the season. So we're trying to take
advantage of every day right now to just take it
one day at a time and get better. So we're
one day better than we were yesterday.
Speaker 2 (19:55):
And I really love the structure of our schedule where
we have the four games. Yeah, I mean we're home away,
home away, and then we go into the three GCL
games and then we finish up with with three really
good teams as well. So I mean I like that
because it's not like you're playing one GCL game and
then you have another game filtered and it's kind of
like do the kids like that, where it's like they're locked.
(20:17):
This is the GCL run just over, Like I mean, really,
it's just over two weeks, two full weeks, fifteen days.
Speaker 1 (20:24):
Yeah, are we We make a big deal about that
when it gets to it, right, Like, you're playing you
know your rivals this week and you're playing you know
the teams up north that you know fit in the
same you know, they're in the same breath as us
from the same point of you know, the all boys
schools that have you know, the same you know, same
issues and same challenges that they face all the time.
(20:46):
But they enjoy playing those games. I think what's they'll
enjoy the most about this year is we'll have way
more home games than we did last year, right, and
we're not playing ten regular season games in ten different stadiums.
So the travel I think will be way better this
year than it was last year. But if you look
back on last year, one of the benefits was the
(21:07):
travel and the time they got to spend together. So
even though we had a long trip to Mischigan last year,
our players will talk about how that was the most
fun they had because they had to spend all that
time with their teammates, with their brothers, and when you
look back, you're like, wow. Like the things that you
think might be a little bit of a pain in
the butt or a little bit of a nuisance, those
(21:28):
are the things that they actually enjoy the most.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
Coach is throwing a little trip side trip to Notre Dame.
Who's not going to be excited. That's that's good stuff.
So all right, so we got a fun schedule and
it's always good. And let me just backtrack and say,
I don't think the kids eat any introduction when it
gets around to the GCL either those games. They know,
they know what's going on. So, uh, coach, let's uh,
(21:52):
let's revisit Victory Day, which is a program that you
brought here to Molor High School and and you know,
from what I understand, the kids that participate in it,
but the players really benefit and love this day.
Speaker 1 (22:08):
Yep. Absolutely. So this is our community service event where
we invite children from the community to be a part
of a molo practice for a day, if you will,
And they're paired up with a buddy and they get
to go around and be a crusader for a day.
And it'll be filled with drills, they'll be filled with
scoring touchdowns. But we pair each each camper with a buddy,
(22:28):
and they get to be that coach and that pal
the whole time. They get to run through a sea
of cheerleaders and do all the things that our guys
get to do on a daily basis. So we're at
the highest number I think we've had our three years
that we're up. My wife texted me and said, we're
up at seventeen now, which is almost I think double
than what we had the first year, which is exciting.
(22:49):
And what's cool is I meet people out in the
community and they tell me they talk about Victory Day.
So I just ran into one of the dads who
is a participant last year with the son, and the
first thing he said to me, you can't wait to
be a Victory Day on Saturday. And so obviously our
guys do a really good job in that in making
(23:09):
that really special for the campers. And I think that's
the coolest part about it, is how much our players
get out of it giving back to the community and
making those kids feel so special and feeling like a crusader.
Speaker 2 (23:21):
For a day. Well, and so many negative headlines are
all over the place, and it's just beautiful and I
think it's great that the kids see, you know what,
you could make a difference in someone else's life and
just uh, it's all just about communication.
Speaker 1 (23:34):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (23:34):
Give them a smile, give them a give them a
high five, and and take care of things. So that's
a that's a great day. And it's it's so awesome
you brought that here. And I know your your mantra
is you wish every football program would copy it because
of what it does.
Speaker 1 (23:49):
Yeah, I I it's I stole it like it was
something that we stole. We did it at Tiffan University
when I was there during my time there is DC
and it was an awesome event and tiff And saw
it from a school up in Michigan too, So you know,
we want to do good things out in the community
and hopefully people pick up on it and they want
(24:11):
to do it in their community and it just keeps
spreading and spreading, and we can spread that positivity across
the country.
Speaker 2 (24:17):
Imitation is the highest form of flatterers as far as
you know you're doing something right. We want that. So
that's awesome. So steal it away if you want out there,
if you're listening to other programs. But coach, you know,
the kind of getting to the crux of everything getting
turned up and turned on and and you know, you'll
(24:37):
see how the team progresses. And I know that's the
other cool thing is from start to finish, you see
how things progress, how things change. It's not going to
be the same playbook in the beginning as it is
it will be towards the end. And that's that's the
fun of it.
Speaker 1 (24:50):
Yep, yep. Things change and every team is different and
the team grows throughout the year, and we try to
send that message to all our players right now, where
you're spot is right now is going to be completely
different by the time the season rolls around. And you
can go back on every single season of probably every
football team, there's gonna be a young man on your
football team that is frustrated with where he's at right
(25:13):
now in the summer, and he's going to get an
opportunity and he's going to take advantage of it and
he's just gonna skyrocket. And sometimes he just takes an
opportunity to kind of get the flow of that. And
then once they're off, they're off, and you know, you
look back and like, how do we miss this? As
coaches in the past. But you know, it's a beautiful thing.
That's what I love about this this game is it
(25:35):
gives opportunities for guys to come out and just really
make a name for themselves and then take off.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
That's a beauty of sport, yep. But the whole key
is you got to be ready. And you might not
like it, like you said, where you're at at that moment,
but you get your opportunity and then you can go
let it rip. But if your head's down, it ain't
gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (25:53):
You got to be right when when that opportunity comes knocking.
You got to be ready to answer the door.
Speaker 2 (25:57):
Coach, There's very few things like Molar football. I will say,
I mean from the alumni to people just you know,
the excitement and you know it was it was an
incredible ride last year and let's let's have another one
this year. So it sounds like a lot of great
things are happening. But I'm sure everyone's going to be
anxious to see the boys on the field and just
(26:20):
open the door and let them go.
Speaker 1 (26:22):
Yeah, and I know I can say this, the effort
that our guys are putting forth on the football field
in the weight room and conditioning. They are gonna make
the the alumni, the parents, all their family members, they
will make them prout because they are putting in the
work and they're committed. We got a great group of seniors.
We got a great leadership on this football team. I
(26:44):
couldn't be more excited to get started. We just got
off the practice field, so our guys are working their
tails off and we can't wait to see it all
come to fruition in a couple weeks.
Speaker 2 (26:55):
Wholeheartedly mean that there's nothing like Molar football and it's
beautiful thing. So coach, thanks for your time today. I
know you've got plenty of things that the season's not
that far away. You know, what is it four weeks? Yeah,
we got about three weeks now. Okay, well let's oh,
I know tomorrow is.
Speaker 1 (27:14):
The day one of August, so we're gonna can't worry
about that.
Speaker 2 (27:16):
You just got to take care of today and tomorrow,
right have We got.
Speaker 1 (27:19):
Some film to watch from yesterday and then get ready
for tomorrow and then we're rocking and rolling. So there
really isn't Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday anymore. It is day one,
day two, day three, yep. The next day, help just
work hard. All the day is an end and why yep,
And there you go.
Speaker 2 (27:33):
That is the head coach of Molar Football, Bert Bathy.
And as you've been listening to the Bert Bathy Andy Show,
the first show of the season of many many shows
to follow, I'm Jeff Schneiedl, class of nineteen eighty four
and the show is sponsored by Comy and Shepherd Realtors
and you hear it here on w MOE and the
Molar Broadcasting Network. Thanks for tuning in. We'll be back
(27:56):
