Speaker 3 (00:39):
Always great to.
Speaker 4 (00:40):
Welcome in our favorite football coach, Bert Bathyany coach.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
How we doing this week?
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Hey, I'm doing well.
Speaker 5 (00:46):
We have our first Friday night of the year. We've
played the last two Saturdays, so back to some normalcy.
We had a short week, but I think our team's
ready to play a Friday.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
Night football game.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
First of six in a row. Yeah yeah, all right.
Speaker 5 (00:58):
Well, all those teams they say the first often in
a row or first or whatever. But we're all over
the place. But we're looking forward to playing on Friday.
Speaker 4 (01:06):
Night, and coach will say it is the second of
three straight state champions from different states that we play,
and of course that's Trinity. We'll talk about that a
little bit later, but coaches passed Saturday. Only word I
can say about that is just wow.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
What a game.
Speaker 4 (01:24):
Difficult for one team to lose. Unfortunately we were on
the short end. But gotta be ultra proud of the boys.
Speaker 6 (01:29):
Man.
Speaker 4 (01:29):
The effort was there, and anyone who bought a ticket
or listened to ultra entertainment, yeah, better better than that
other game that was up in Columbus, I think.
Speaker 5 (01:40):
Yeah, it was a It was a ton of fun.
We love playing at Ironton. They treat us really really well.
Coach Pendleton, the head coach at Ironton, does an awesome job.
So our players love playing there. And last year it
was kind of a different game. It was more of
a defensive battle, but it went in the overtime. We're
in the short end of the sick there, but I
(02:02):
bet for the fans it was exciting. I told our
team after the game, I was really proud of our resiliency.
I didn't like the outcome, but I love the process.
There's a lot of good things that happen a lot
of bad things. So there's things we got to clean up.
By no means are we a complete or you know,
a fishing football team just yet. We're gonna keep getting
(02:22):
better each and every week and hopefully that happens. But
we got to play better complimentary football. I think that's
like the big message to our team is our defense
and offense have to play more in sync with each other.
Our forces have to play more and sync with each
other so we can play a more complete game.
Speaker 4 (02:37):
Coach, it was what a game, What an effort, What
an entertainment value, what an environment? What a perfect day?
And of course I had someone come up to me
and say, you know, we got to stop playing on
in Ironton. This isn't working for us. I'm like, are
you crazy? This is like what high school football should be.
Incredible and great effort. Well, coach, you know, I always
(02:57):
think about the different games I know too years ago,
the Center Grove game that still burns in my crawl,
how that the how that went last week? Mallard Creek,
maybe this is Mount Carmel will be kind of the
springboard like those. That's kind of how I think, you know,
you get a little bit of a setback, but I
think it kind of keeps everybody refocused.
Speaker 5 (03:16):
Yeah, I mean, we play the schedule that we do
for the mindset that we're gonna continue to grow and
develop as a football team, to try to play our
best ball when it matters most. And you know, I
tell our guys all the time, like this is like
college football, right, Like when you get two top teams
in the country that play.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Someone's gonna win, someone's gonna lose.
Speaker 5 (03:35):
It's gonna be a close game, and it comes down
to those margins of who can execute the best and
who can eliminate mistakes.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
And I think we.
Speaker 5 (03:43):
Probably made one more mistake than they did and that's
why they were able to win the game. But like
you said, like an entertainment value for the fans, I
think was great, and we showed a lot of resiliency.
I don't like how we're putting ourselves in a two
touchdown hole two games back to back, Like, I don't
like that at whatsoever. But if you want to look
at the silver lining, the resiliency to nutt flinch and
(04:05):
then fire back like that, that's something to build off of.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Right.
Speaker 5 (04:10):
Our guys don't have a lot of quit. They have grit,
they have resiliency. I love that about them. We have
to come out faster. So that's been as a coaching
staff at evaluation standpoint of what do we need to
do to come out the gates fast like we do?
And we're down a couple of scores, but hopefully we
can get back on track this week.
Speaker 4 (04:29):
And as you mentioned, a short week, but then we
go a bunch of Fridays in a row, so you know,
kind of get everybody back in rhythm with school, with
football and everything there.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
So let's take our first break.
Speaker 4 (04:40):

which features the head coach of Molar Football. Bert Bathyani
Show was sponsored by Comy and Shepherd Reltors. I'm Jeff
Schneidle class of nineteen eighty four and with Kobe and
Shepherd Reeltors.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
Coach, we come out at Ironton. You couldn't have requested
a more beautiful day. Not a cloud in the sky,
perfect sun at one o'clock kickoff. I mean, it was
like the epitome of really what a football atmosphere and
game should be.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Yeah, it was awesome. It was great weather.
Speaker 5 (06:49):
It was way better than the last time we were
there where it was you know, hot as can be.
But it was a picture perfect day. So our kids
got there in red to roll and there raid to roll,
so you know, I checked there from that sad point,
you never want the game to come down the weather.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
So it was it was a beautiful day for football.
Speaker 4 (07:06):
Coach, we come out and and we are too an
ozer with the coin flips, so we we defer again,
which that that's an important thing. Mount Carmel starts with
the ball and you know, they they have an eighty
three yard drive. They go, they go punch it in
right from the beginning, and you know that's kind of
how the game started. We get the ball, we're unable
(07:27):
to move the ball, and ball goes back to Mount Carmel.
They score again, and coach kind of having the same
thoughts maybe as the week before, where Okay, now we're
down two scores, we got to get something going because
you can't get further down to a real good team
like this.
Speaker 5 (07:42):
Yeah, I think I think the first series we went
for it on fourth down. I think early on in
the game we told our team we're going to be
really aggressive this game, and we were going to play
to win, not play to lose. We took a shot
at Carson Ko and he made an incredible catch, an
incredible content has to catch that also drawing an interference
and got us rolling and got his confidence up and
(08:05):
got to a point where I think we stuttered on
like a fourth and four one for the field goal,
they blocked it. They had some momentum, and then our
defense did a really good job on first and second
down for the most part of the day, and then
on third and long we just we really struggled for
whatever reason and gave up a big play that led
the momentum and they punched in another score. So we're
(08:26):
down fourteen to nothing pretty quick. But offensively, we were
confident we were gonna be able to move the ball,
and then Matt made a couple of big plays one
with his legs and then two with his legs actually,
and then then we took a shot the Carson that
got us rolling. And then you talk about Caleb Willis
stepping up, what a performance he had. Marina Middleton, who's
been a rock star for us on defense, goes down
(08:49):
and then Caleb Willis goes in and gets the pick
six and on all of a sudden, it's fourteen fourteen fourteen.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
Right, just in a matter of seconds.
Speaker 5 (08:55):
Yeah, So, I mean, I'm sure Mount Carmel was kind
of thinking, you know, what the heck just happened there,
And then we started to settle in and went back
and forth, and then we were able to get a
really good two minute drill and punch it in with
I think with about a minute left, maybe less than
a minute, and then we go in tied halftime twenty
one to twenty one. So that was a big confidence
booster as we as we worked through the first half.
Speaker 4 (09:18):
And let me retrack to what I said, I said
we didn't really move the ball that actually we did
on that first drive we went sixty one yards, So
I got to get the cobwebs out of my brain
on that one. But so we missed the field goal.
But what a turn of events. You know, we're down
fourteen to nothing, we score, and literally it was in
real time about a minute and a half. We went
(09:41):
from down fourteen to now we're tied and got momentum?
Did that just give everybody some juice and kind of
get everybody?
Speaker 1 (09:48):
I mean, I would hope, so, right like I would hope.
Speaker 5 (09:50):
So whenever you get anytime there's a turnover, that's a
huge momentum changing play. And then when you add a
pick six into it, and when it happened right after
a touchdown, that's a that's a big momentum swing. So
I think that allowed us to settle in a little
bit more and you know, and let the game come
to us in certain areas of the game. But when
(10:10):
you get two good teams like that, right, like, teams
are gonna make big plays, right and it's usually the
one that makes the most, the one that eliminates the most,
that is able to be more successful. At that standpoint,
I thought they did a really good job of beating
us on third and long, and then we have to
do a better job on offense extending our drives to
get more first downs. So we're not just living off
the shot play like we were in the first.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
Half coaching, and Willis had the pick six and that
seemed to be a little bit of their bread and butter,
kind of going out to the side the Yeah, but
they also had a trio receivers that were unbelievable three,
four and five, So that was a lot to cover there.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
Those guys were really good.
Speaker 5 (10:46):
Yeah, well they have they have two receivers for top
hundred players and they got offers to, you know, everyone
in the country. And I think they're both I think
they're both juniors if I remember correctly, but.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
They're gonna be really really good.
Speaker 5 (10:59):
And then the other side that they had they were
giving the ball was a really good player as well.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
And the quarterback, I.
Speaker 5 (11:04):
Mean, besides the pick six, I thought he did a
really good job distributing the ball to his players. And
you could tell at the end of the game when
they they they announced him as player of the game
the way that other team responded to him like he
was he was a leader of that football team, so
you can see why he won the job. But they
were they were really dynamic on offense. We knew they
were going to be like that I thought we had
(11:24):
our moments of excellence, but not as consistent as I
would like to be. And you know, we got to
do a better job, like I said on this third
and longs of getting off the field and allowing our
defense to get a break and then get the offense
the ball back.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
Coach, So we go in twenty one to twenty one
at halftime, and I jokingly said on the broadcast, Hey,
I wrote, and that envelope is going to be forty
two to forty two at the end of the game.
And darn near almost happened about that. It was kind
of a kind of a funny and thing with that.
And you know, coach, in that second half, you know,
(12:00):
one of the players a freshman. You know, we try
not to highlight too many players, but Davis came in
and in one play, Matt saw it and he went
up and made a pretty acrobatic catch and took it
into the end zone.
Speaker 5 (12:13):
Yeah, our defense made a huge play and got a takeaway,
which is huge. I mean we've been I mean, our
defense has been really opportunistic the last two weeks. From
that standpoint, I mean six takeaways in the first game.
Two in this game, right, so when you're doing that,
you're gonna give your offensive chance to be.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
Able to score.
Speaker 5 (12:30):
And both those both those takeaways happened deep in opponents
territory where we have well, I mean one was the
pick six, but then we have a short field and
going out going out there right like the mindset we
were gonna put Jay in and we were gonna throw
them the ball. And he did what he does in
practice every day. He went up and caught it at
the highest point, made an incredible acrobatic catch for his
first high school touchdown.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
So pretty cool.
Speaker 5 (12:53):
And then but he's been earning Matt's trust throughout the
week in practice being able to catch the type of
balls in those situations. So that's a big deal for
our receivers is developing that trust throughout the week. And
you keep doing that through through your actions and making
those plays throughout the weeks. And then Matt has that
confidence to thirty the ball in the game.
Speaker 4 (13:15):
And coach Matt being a senior, he's had guys along
the way that he's got confidence in. They know each other,
and that is hard, I mean no different than Matt.
When Matt was put in as a freshman. You know,
the juniors and seniors are like, hey, we got to
get on board with this guy.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
He's got to get on board with them. But that
says a lot.
Speaker 4 (13:32):
I know, we're down maybe a couple a couple guys
that could be catching the ball, but other guys stepping up,
and certainly they did.
Speaker 5 (13:38):
Yeah, we have a couple guys down, but it's the
next man up mentality.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
Right. That's sports, and that's that's high school football.
Speaker 5 (13:43):
That's you know, when you play the schedule that we do,
you're gonna have you know, like those games hit a
little bit harder, right, so you get to have a
deep roster. So we emphasize on developing depth at every
single one of our positions throughout the year, and that's
why we rotate so many guys at so many different
spots for those moments.
Speaker 1 (14:01):
Right.
Speaker 5 (14:01):
So he earned that opportunity and then he took advantage
of it, and I guarantee he's going to have more
opportunities to come coach.
Speaker 4 (14:09):
So as we it was almost like a boxing match
kind of going back and forth and everyone trying to
capitalize on a mistake here, a mistake there. But you
know that that last score that we got, I mean
you score. When you can score, you can't say, hey,
let's you're not gonna run out of bounds or try
to run it out.
Speaker 3 (14:27):
I mean, it just happens.
Speaker 4 (14:28):
And you know, we were a play here or there
away from just sealing the victory and it didn't happen.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
But you know, just a valiant effort by the kids.
Speaker 5 (14:36):
Yeah, you have a game like that, when you win
or lose by one, you can go back and look
at multiple plays, dozens of plays of where if you
execute a little bit better or you focus a little
bit more and you make the play, that's the difference
in the game, right, And that's that's the message I
think that we send to our team is there's never
(14:58):
a time to relax in this sport. And you know,
your your human nature tells you to relax when you're
doing well, But that's the worst time to relax because
that's when you're your most vulnerable. So you got to
keep that edge, You got to maintain that aggression. You
got to maintain that level of focus at all times
and think about every single play that I'm in, my level,
(15:21):
my focus, my effort, my energy has to be at
a premium so I can perform because that play has
to have its own moment in football history. And I
know that sounds a little over the top, but that's
the mindset that you have to have to play at
that level. Is every single play I'm in it could
have its own moment in history because you never know
(15:42):
when the play is going to happen, right, You just
never know. So our guys are I think we will
get better at that, right, Like that's part of the process,
as part of the Kaism mentality. And as long as
we're moving in the right direction, you know, you feel
confident about you know, what you're being able to build
in the future.
Speaker 4 (16:00):
Which one little thing here or there, had we made
like let's say the field goal in the first quarter, yep,
the whole kind of the scheme of the game would
have changed. It wouldn't have been you know, they're up
to and then we tie, and then you know, they score,
we score back and forth, we're tied, we're tied.
Speaker 3 (16:14):
I mean, it's like off kilter can change the whole thought.
Speaker 1 (16:16):
Till those coaches are saying the same thing.
Speaker 5 (16:18):
They're saying, Hey, if we didn't turn the ball over
those two times, it's a different game, Right. You can
make that adjustment. You can make that argument at any
point in time. But when you get in those tiny game,
those kind of kind of games, that's why it's so
important to focus on the level of execution. Right Like
in previous weeks, we can we can lean on the
fact that we practice better than other teams, or we
(16:40):
have better players than other teams, or we we work
harder in the weight room than other teams. And you
get the teams that have won three state titles in
a row, right Like, they do the same things that
you do. Right They're lifting hard, they have good coaches,
they have good players, right Like, everything is more equal.
So now it just comes down to the execution. That's
got to be the X factor at those levels. And
(17:00):
and that's it, right, So we got to Kaisaan, we
got to get better.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
Right.
Speaker 5 (17:04):
I love the effort, I love the process. I hated
the result. I absolutely hated the result. But we're gonna
We're gonna grow, We're gonna get better and hopefully put
a better product out on Friday.
Speaker 4 (17:15):
Coach speaking of their head coach, did you realize he
was a Heisman finalist?
Speaker 1 (17:19):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (17:20):
And quarterback Northern Illinois, Yep, you know what I'm amazed
I miss that. But uh, actually the person that brought
to my attention during the game, Andrew Stoff goes uncle
Nick or cousin. I guess it'd be his cousin. Yes,
but he texted me he says.
Speaker 3 (17:38):
Is that the same guy who was the nice and.
Speaker 4 (17:40):
He texted me he said, yep, that's who it is.
So wow, that was I mean, that's kind of that's
really cool.
Speaker 1 (17:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (17:46):
So but all right, well we uh I got asked,
will we try to do something with Mount Carmel again
down the road?
Speaker 1 (17:53):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (17:53):
Absolutely, absolutely so. I think it, like anytime. I think
they're always looking for teams to play. I think they
have a I think they have a deeper league than us.
And by deeper, I mean they have more teams in
the league, right, Like for us it's only you know
us Elder Excellent South, so's it's harder for us to
find games.
Speaker 1 (18:11):
So we would love to play them.
Speaker 5 (18:13):
The issue you run into is just at the distance, right,
Like that's that's the issue.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
Right.
Speaker 5 (18:17):
They were able to travel seven hours to get here.
We only traveled two and a half. Right, that makes
it easy. Now we've made that trip before the Miskegan
But that takes a lot out of your team, right, Like,
I mean, we got done with that game.
Speaker 1 (18:32):
At what four point thirty?
Speaker 5 (18:33):
They leave at five o'clock, they get home at midnight,
Like we played Miskeigan at seven, right, and we didn't
get home till five six in the morning. Right, So
that just puts you way behind from an energy level
for the next week. So we've played them before, we
played them, we'll play them again. I think they would
say the same thing. So I don't think anything's on
the books as of now. But obviously I think teams
from Chicago playing teams from Cincinnati make a ton of
(18:56):
sense because they're so similar with all the Catholic schools.
Speaker 1 (18:59):
That they have.
Speaker 4 (19:00):
And there's a perfect place that we could play them
called Lucas Oil Stadium. So someone in Indianapolis listening in
put put together something. Maybe we can try to do
that and we'll take the one o'clock slot again. Yeah,
so so we have that, but hey, that'd be beautiful.
Speaker 3 (19:15):
Now.
Speaker 4 (19:16):
You know, you only figure out how good you are
when you play the best of the best. Yeah, And
that's what it is. I mean, if you go win
a game fifty eight to nothing, you're you're not doing
anything other than maybe.
Speaker 3 (19:27):
Pad in your stats.
Speaker 4 (19:27):
But all right, let's put Mount Carmel in the books
and we'll take a break and we're gonna come back
and talk about this week's upcoming opponent. Interestingly enough, as
a state record of fifty games one in a row
not going on right now, but that's what they have.
We're talking about the Trinity Shamrocks. Will take a break
and we'll be back as you're listening to the Burt

another state champion, the Trinity Shamrocks. Is they come to town
(21:36):
and they come into and oh we're one and one.
They've had two pretty convincing victories and another really good
team we're gonna face.
Speaker 5 (21:43):
Yeah, I mean you talk about tradition, I mean they've
won twenty nine state titles in the state of Kentucky.
They are one of the premier programs in the entire country,
and we have a history of playing them, so we're
looking forward to it. They're a very very good football team.
I think they've won Tuesday titles in a row. They're
really strong on defense. They got a fast, aggressive front seven.
(22:06):
They're really sound in the back end. They got athletes
all over the place, so they got a very formidable defense.
Speaker 1 (22:12):
They got a.
Speaker 5 (22:12):
Great rich tradition there as well. Offensively, I think they're
really really talented. They're really balanced. They have a really
good quarterback, senior driven offensive line, a strong running game,
and the quarterback does a good job making decisions within
their RPO packages. And they got some really good wideouts
that can take the top off and they can, you know,
(22:33):
be the possession guys as well that make those plays
down the field. So I think they're insanely well coached.
I think they're very well balanced. So it'll be a
great contest for us, So we're looking forward to it.
Speaker 3 (22:43):
Coach.
Speaker 4 (22:43):
They have yet to give up any points. Now, maybe
it might be the competition they're playing, but they certainly
have come out of the box quickly scored thirty five
and I believe their first game and they got toned
down to only thirteen in the first quarter or the
next game, but won that game thirty seven, and I
think so we'll be more happy to put the first
points on the board against him.
Speaker 5 (23:04):
Well, I think they've won one hundred to nothing so
far in the first two games, and they've had two
kickoff returns and both have won for touchdowns.
Speaker 3 (23:13):
Special forces on alert.
Speaker 5 (23:15):
So they are They're good in every aspect of the game.
I don't see a weakness on them. I think they
have a really good kickoff guy. Right, you can bang
the ball in the back of the end zone. They
have a really good punter who's the same guy, but
he's an elite punter, so they can flip the field
from that standpoint as well. They do a good job
running down on kickoff, even when you don't kick the
(23:36):
ball in the end zone. They're really good on kickoff
there obviously, kick return, they're explosive from that standpoint, and
then on pump block, right, they're gonna be aggressive, right,
They're gonna try to go for it. So they do
things right in every aspect of the game. And that's
why they've been able to win the last two state
championships and that's why they've had the success that they've had.
So I can't give enough credit to those guys. And
(23:58):
they got really good players too, So it'll be fun.
Speaker 4 (24:00):
It's going to be a really interesting game because we've
scored over forty points in each of our first two
games and they've given up nothing. And obviously they've scored
some points and you know, I don't know, maybe it'll
be uh, we'll see.
Speaker 3 (24:12):
Let's let's let's.
Speaker 4 (24:13):
Let's not get back in the forties both of us,
but let's see what happens with coach.
Speaker 3 (24:17):
Certainly going to be a fun night.
Speaker 4 (24:20):
I know they're talking about maybe a little bit of
the hectic weather, possibly some storms, but maybe mother Nature
will either hold them up or push them through. And
let's kick it off on Friday night at Mount Saint
Joseph University and another home game for the Crusaders. We
get to go to a place we've been familiar with
over the years, so let's go and get it done. Coaches,
(24:42):
We'll bring the Shamrocks in so blue and gold versus
