Speaker 1 (00:00):
Success in life.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
Come what is it you want?

Speaker 3 (00:02):
Give your best effort, show me what you got.

Speaker 1 (00:04):
If you want to be a success, you've gotta have.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
It's the Burt Pathyany Coaches Shoe presented by Komy and
Shepherd Reelders And here's your host, Jeff seed Er, head
football coach Burt Paty and w Moe and the Molar
Broadcasting Network present The Burt Bathyani Show, which features the
head coach of Molar Football. Bert Bathyani Show is sponsored

(00:29):
by Comy and Shepherd Reeltors. I'm Jeff Schneedle with Komy
and Shepherd Reeltors, but also class of nineteen eighty four
Molar High School. Always great to catch up with our
favorite football coach, Burt Bathyany coach. How are we doing today?

Speaker 1 (00:44):
See he's doing well. Man, missed you last week?

Speaker 2 (00:47):
Well just uh got to go to Wrigley Field. You
got to get on Wrigley Field.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
So cool, a little.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Couple of connections there. It's all good. But missed the show,
but certainly back for the game. But big week this
week Elder week. Yep, No, no introduction really needed with
that other than both teams are undefeated in the GCL.
And this is the last GCL game, so just like
the baseball playoffs, winner take all. Yep, we got three
of those games today on Thursday. But our big game

(01:15):
Friday night against the Panthers, and you know, coach, were
off to a five and one start. And really, the
one thing that stands out with me about this team
is we really take care of the football very very well.
And I hope I don't think so.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
I was just going to say, like I wish you were,
we need to knock on wood.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
No, but I mean, honestly, I mean, it's just, you know,
other teams aren't getting many freebies from us, and we
got twelve turnovers, which isn't a huge amount, but that's
to a game, and when you win the turnover battle,
you're usually in pretty good shape.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
Yeah, I think you're usually trying to get I mean, defensively,
you're you're getting two turnovers a game, Like I don't
think there's a DC in the country that would say
no to that. I mean, that's great. Obviously, like three, four, five,
you like more now. Thus it doesn't seem like that much,
I think because we had six in the first game.
So when you think of it like that, we had
six in the first game, and then the last five

(02:08):
we've had six, right, because it doesn't feel like we've
we've had that many. So that's been an emphasis for
us all the time. Is predicting, protecting the football on offense,
taking the football away on defense. I think we need
do a better job of forcing turnovers, Like there's the
gimmes that are out there. We have to force those
turnovers to be able to take the ball away because

(02:30):
that can change the whole dynamic of the game.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
And coach, I mean, you know, we really have we
haven't had any easy games, so getting those turnovers, those
are huge. But also we're playing teams again other than
the first game, and you know Princeton certainly.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
It's a really good team, good team, right, but.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
You know, we're not playing teams that are just coughing
up the ball either, So you know, it's just making
it really good football. Coach, we are right now winning
all four quarters. What's interesting is we have a plus
one margin for quarter one, we're plus twenty eight, and
quarter two, plus fifty two and quarter three and plus
twenty five in quarter four. The one that glares out

(03:11):
to me is the plus fifty two in the third quarter,
because I think that means we're coming out, you know,
maybe with a better edge or with with with good
adjustments and things are happening, we're able to you know,
outscore our opponents in the third quarter.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
I don't know what is to make of that. I'd
like to think that we do a pretty good job
of just settling down at halftime and then putting our
kids in a good position to go out and make plays.
I can tell you halftime adjustments is probably the most
overrated thing in football, right Like, you go in, it's
not like you totally scrap the plan or anything like that.
You go in and sometimes just coming out and playing
better and you have a different emphasis of you know

(03:47):
what you're going to focus on coming out in the
second half. And I know that first quarter was is
not great. Just the first three games we were down
fourteen to nothing early on. But I think I wonder
what that number is after these last three games compared
to the first three games. I think we're doing a
better job coming out the start of the game and
playing better complimentary football. But that's an interesting stat right there.

(04:11):
I think in the in the second quarter and third quarter,
it looks like we're figuring out, you know, after the
meet and greet of what that team is trying to do,
and we start to figure out instead of in of,
you know, what we do best.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
And conversely, there really hasn't been like first play from
scrimmage like just a you know, an eighty yard pass
or something like that for either side. So it is
that kind of you say, the meet and greet, trying
to figure out what what's each side trying to do,
And that's that's kind of the fun of the the
strategy of the football game. I mean, you know, I'm
sure there's some games and we haven't really had one

(04:44):
net where you can just go and just mow everyone
down and just move the ball down the field. It's
it's just fit trying to figure things out there in
that first quarter. But you know, hats off to you
and the staff. I mean, maybe it's just broadcast fodder
about talking about coming out in that third quarter, but
that that's just huge and certainly reflects in our overall
play and records.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
Well, I like to think that it's not just you know,
coming at halftime and making halftime adjustments. It's like the
overall product that you're trying to create Like we have
a really good hydration system for our players. We have
a really good energy station for our players. So even
like before the game and at halftime, I think we're

(05:25):
making good decisions as a program to put our kids
in the best physical position to outlast opponents as well.
Right Like, That's how I think of it. As in
the first quarter, that's when everyone is fresh, right Like,
that's when everyone should be at one hundred percent. And
then as the game goes on, right like, teams will
start to wear down, and that's when your execution starts

(05:48):
to increase, and it might be increasing because the opponent's
lack of execution is starting to increase too, Right, So
I think it might be more of just a comprehensive
program of I like to think that we do it
pretty good in the off season from January leading all
the way up into August, where we're a pretty well
conditioned team, and we never sacrifice our weightlifting during the

(06:10):
season as well, Like our our developmental guys are getting
three lifts a week, our varsity guys are getting two
lifts a week. We have you know, mandatory treatment for
our guys after a game. So I think when you
look at the entire product. I think that is more
that leads to you know, the stats that you're seeing
in the quarter, is this, we're physically conditioned. I think

(06:32):
we're able to not just rise to the occasion, but
we fall to the level of our training. And I
think the level of our training is higher than most
teams that we play.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
Coach, and you couple that, it just seems like we're
prepared and maybe some things might not be clicking in
that first quarter, but it's not like we're abandoning what
we're doing. Just let's just stay We have a plan
and it's going to work to stick to it.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
Yeah, yeah, like you said, I mean in against Trinity,
we were moving the ball against their defense in the
first half. It was just a play here, play there.
We had to take away or excuse me, a way
to turnover or a sack, a penalty, something like that,
and it puts you behind the sticks. So we went
in the halftime only scoring three points. But when you
looked at the yards and like you felt like you

(07:17):
were able to move the ball. So your halftime adjustments
aren't anything different than Hey, we got to keep doing
what we're doing and just eliminate these self inflicted wounds,
and things will happen. For so sometimes it's just as
simple as that, where you stick to the plan and
you don't really divert it. Maybe they start changing some
things and you make a couple of plays and then

(07:37):
that wave of momentum. You just can't underestimate that, And
I think our team has done a good job. When
that play happens and we capture that momentum, we can
ride that way, to ride that wave a little bit
to put us in a good position to win the game.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
Coach, you've played and coach for years. Have you ever
gone into a halftime not here at more, but previously
where a coach just like flies off the handle and says,
we're changing everything, this isn't working, or we got to
do something that we've never done before, because.

Speaker 1 (08:06):
That's never that has never ever come on. No, No,
you don't something you've never done before like That's that
shows a lack of confidence in what you've done the
whole week before. And you might go to a play
or a concept or a scheme that might have worked
in weeks past, but it's something you've repped before, and
it's something that you've you've practiced right, like to just

(08:30):
throw out like if anyone's doing that right like there, now,
I've never heard of that before, but you know, God
bless them if they're able to do that.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
A lot of times that doesn't work.

Speaker 1 (08:39):
No, it doesn't work.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
Don't work, so neither does probably a lot of yelling
and screaming either unless you unless your team really needs
the fire under it.

Speaker 1 (08:47):
You've got to pick and choose those moments. Like sometimes
it can work. Sometimes they can backfire, but you get
to those moments sometimes where now there is that like
you know that moment where like, hey, I have to
do something to row these guys up. And then if
you pick your moment at the right time, it can
motivate them and can do a different team come out
in the second half. If you're what's doing it, it gets

(09:08):
and it gets watered down, right.

Speaker 2 (09:09):
Just you know, it's get stonefaced. They're not paying attention.
So all right, well, let's hope we don't have to
do it this week. We'll come back. We'll talk about
last week's game against the Lancers. As you're listening to

Go big mo. You're tuned in to w MOE and
the Molar Broadcasting Network and more specifically the Bert Bathyani Show,
which features the head coach of Moler Football, Bert Bathyani.
The show is sponsored by Comye and Shepherd Realtors. For

(10:21):
all your real estate needs, I'm Jeff Schneidl class of
nineteen eighty four and with Comye and Shepherd Realtors coach,
I'm going to say we've we've had another great run
of great weather. What a great knife of weather. Always
got to bring that up. Barrett didn't mention that I
told him to last week I'm kidding, but you know,
we haven't had to worry about any of that and

(10:42):
come out against LaSalle talking about that plus one in
the first quarter last week against Lasal the first quarter
zero zero.

Speaker 1 (10:50):
Zero zero, wasn't ye trying to figure it out a
little bit. They do a good job of shrinking the game,
you know when they get it, and you know, I
think that first series for us, getting a first town
was like pulling teeth, and then we had two holding
calls and we end up at first and thirty, which
you know, there's no real plays on the play sheet
for that situation, so you just try to grind your

(11:10):
way back into it. We got ourselves to a third
and ten. I thought we had a chance to get it,
and then we punt and we put in the end zone.
Our punter has been doing a really good job these
last couple of weeks. And then just you know the
same thing. I was like pulling teeth trying to get
off the field against those guys. And I think the
last you know, I've played them three years now, I
think they've always done a good job early on grinding

(11:35):
that first quarter out and keeping it close, and then
usually one play happens we're able to pull away.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
I mean, they're well coached and they're they're they're doing
things that they they're trying. They're trying to do things
they want to do coach. We finally get in the
second quarter Dante ware thirteen yard run for the first
score kind of opened opened.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
It up a little bit. That was a really good job.
So that was a double call and and Matt did
not check it, which was the right read, and then
he able to you know, let down if they do
his thing, and you know, the line blocked it up
pretty well and he made a good play. So that's
the stuff that people don't see is like, you know,
Matt's like looking at something and he has to make
a decision and he made the right decision to get
a touch then.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
And I mean, unless they're really kind of deep into
the game of football, I don't think they realize how
much processing a quarterback has to do. No, I mean,
and I always chuckle when someone says how bad a
quarterback is at any level. I mean, because they got
to they gotta be reading things and figure they're figuring
things out on the floor.

Speaker 1 (12:30):
I have to people saying that probably don't even know
what a three technique is, right, and they got to identify,
you know, where where the front is, how the how
the aligne is going to adjust, how many numbers are
in the box so I can throw it? Can I
run it?

Speaker 3 (12:40):
Can?

Speaker 1 (12:40):
You know? There's just a ton of processing that goes
into it that you know, most people couldn't even fathom
the handle.

Speaker 2 (12:46):
And I always think being at a game or watching
it am, we're seeing it in more of a three D.
The quarterback's literally seeing it a linear level. They don't.
They can't. I mean they can see some separate but
they can't see what you see when you're looking from
a bull. It's a different VideA, Andy, But people don't
understand that. It's you know, it's I equated to playing
golf and tennis. Wow, it doesn't look that hard on TV.

(13:08):
How hard can it be? How hard can be playing quarterback?
You get into it and you're like, how these wait,
how these guys do that?

Speaker 1 (13:13):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (13:14):
And so you know, hats off the matt with that
again doing all that processing. So Reggie Watson shows up
again with a twenty nine yard touchdown pass gets us
on the board again.

Speaker 1 (13:24):
Yeah, Uh, that was a shot. Play that we had
in for that week. That was the same one we
hit Carson against Mount Carmo, So we brought it back
after a couple of weeks and it's a longer developing play.
But give Matt a ton of credit for extending the
play because he knew he was going to get open
and he he bought enough time just to let that
thing rip. And then Reggie, you know, doing his thing

(13:45):
and had a little double move and then he had
his aiming points at back pylon, so he knew if
he could just get separate from the safety a little bit,
that ball is going to be there, and he just
had to run it down. So it made a great catch.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
Wall was delivered well, and then right before half Cooper
mccutch in a forty three our touchdown pass.

Speaker 1 (14:01):
So yeah, it's nice having him back in the mix.
But what people don't see in that situation is it
was third and six, a play was called. Cooper had
a certain route. Matt sees the coverage, sees the leverage,
sees the dv in checks to it, and then delivers
a strike to Cooper perfectly throwing ball and then he

(14:22):
had the one handed catch. But that stuff people don't
see It's not we didn't get in the otto and say, hey,
the vertical to Cooper right Like that is years and
years and years of talking about coverage and talking about
leverage and then Matt's seeing that over and over and
then having that trust with Cooper and then them making
that decision and then going and executing. So again, I know,

(14:43):
I'm like, all three of those touchdowns had to do
with someone on our team making a decision and having
to adjust based upon what the defense is doing.

Speaker 2 (14:52):
And that's got to be satisfying as a coach seeing that. Yeah,
you know what's cool is seeing when Cooper goes out
like as a wide receiver, It's like, here's this guy
supposed to be a tight end. You know, you're not
on the line he's at and so I'm sure that's
got to create some type of matchup problems for defense,
you'd like to think.

Speaker 1 (15:08):
So, I mean, he's a big body, and we're really
fortunate to have not only just two great tight ends
with Cooper and Sam, but we also have Jackson Meredin
and Tristan Jackson who do a phenomenal job as well.
So having those big bodies definitely helps out a ton
because in high school football you try to change personnel,
they don't stop the they don't stop the game for
you to change personnel like they do in college football

(15:29):
and NFL. So that makes it hard. And a lot
of high schools just don't have the body types to
do that or the practice time to practice all those
different personnels. So it can when you get a team
that changes personnel quite bag, it can cause some issues.

Speaker 2 (15:41):
And you're not just relying let's say on Cooper Sam
Hamilton with in that position, when you've got Murden and
Jackson that are coming. That's just what's really cool is
they're all just they're all rotating in, staying fresher, all
getting reps, all in the flow, all in the mix.
So that's good stuff. So all right, so we go
to halftime twenty one to nothing. We we we get

(16:03):
we take the ball down to the one yard line
and all of a sudden havoc happens.

Speaker 1 (16:07):
Yeah, so we Christian Harris goes into fullback and then
he was able to sneak into the end zone for
another touchdown.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
So I mean, the big man got his mits on it.
So is that is that a is that a process?
I mean, are there a whole bunch of options that
we go with now, I.

Speaker 1 (16:22):
Mean, that's just a play. That's just a play that's
been practiced since since July, and so that's been going
on for quite a while.

Speaker 2 (16:29):
So I will say, I will say the first time
seeing that havoc, that personnel coming in, that Christian was
very excited in Tennessee. I mean he was euphoric running
on the field before the play ever happened. But I
noticed he wasn't as euphloric running in and and I
kind of thought, I'm like, why isn't he as excited
now as he was?

Speaker 1 (16:49):
And he had to run a long way, and that
was probably on me. I should have got them ready,
I think. I think we threw a bubble to to
Reggie and he got it down to the one. So
the situation in my mindset changed quite a bit where
we were in the mid to high red where there's
a certain list of plays that I'm thinking for that situation.
But also he gets it down to the one, so

(17:11):
first and goal from the one right, like that'd before
down territory for us, so like the perfect time to
call that play just in case something goes wrong. So
they were on the bench and we yelled for it.
And give Tristan Jackson a lot of credit because Christian
Harris is going in for Tristan Jackson, so that would
have been Tristan Jackson's touchdown. So when you call havoc,
Tristan Jackson b lines from the sideline all the way

(17:34):
to the defensive huddle to pull Christian and Kuzo out
and getting them running on the field. So Christian ran
about one hundred yards. This probably was He probably wasn't.
He was not enthusiastic. You have a d lineman running
that far man like he might have. He might have
needed a water break after that. But once the play
call was in, I knew he was excited about it
because we ran that play on Tuesday and once he

(17:58):
caught it, he ran the whole length of the field
or a touchdown, so he got his conditioning in as well.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
What that was exciting that?

Speaker 1 (18:05):
Now?

Speaker 2 (18:05):
How exciting was the whole defense of leaders to, you know,
put points on the board.

Speaker 1 (18:12):
Everyone's excited. What was cool was like in practice when
we do our competitive stuff, you would think that Christian
Harris and Matt Ponatowski hate each other for how much
they talk back and forth and they go but that's
just that's that's just that's the brotherhood, right like like
when I argue with my brothers and cousins, right like
like when in competitive environments, it gets kind of cut
through it. So they get after each other and that's

(18:34):
the way it should be. But then once it's over,
their teammates, right. So, like at the end, I think
Matt was like the first one to run over and
like celebrate with Christian Connor Cuzzo is jacked up about it,
like so all those guys celebrated him, which is really cool.
So I think that that's a good example of like
the makeup of this team too.

Speaker 2 (18:54):
Again, everyone sees these guys once a week at the games.
They don't see everything going on behind the scenes, which
probably is just as cool, if not cooler, than what
happens on game night.

Speaker 1 (19:05):
Yeah, I always I think every play has a story.
I think every play could like have its own place
in history, and you always gotta be ready for that
that moment. But it's pretty cool to hear the background
of all those different plays and how they get set
up and then you know what the outcome is when
it all comes to fruition.

Speaker 2 (19:22):
So lasal finally gets on the board midway through the
third quarter, making it twenty eight to seven, and then
late in the third quarter, Juice Glover Brown is Uh,
he's impressive, isn't he. Yeah? Yeah, he ran for one.

Speaker 1 (19:35):
Hundred yards and I mean he gets shot out of
a cannon. Heat For a fourteen year old kid man,
he knows how to run the.

Speaker 2 (19:42):
Rock well and he kept he kept running it, punching
it in twice. He punched in another one. But uh,
with more than half the quarter to go in the
fourth quarter. I know some folks on the little south
Side might weren't happy at the end of the game,
but I mean, yeah.

Speaker 1 (19:58):
Let's talk about that, right. We're not gonna to hold
our guys back whatsoever. Like they work their tails off
throughout the week and they deserve a chance to play.
So even at the end of the game, we take
our four senior alignment who never get a chance to play,
and we told them, hey, if we get to go
back out, we're gonna you'll get a play. So we
tell those kids that that's with five six minutes left

(20:19):
in the game. They're sitting there thinking like they're thinking
they're hoping. They're praying that they get to get in.
All their parents are in the stands thinking, hey, the
score is this, it's a rin clock. My kid has
a chance to get in, and we get to that
moment and we could go victory and kneel it out,
like I get it. But this is high school football
and those kids deserve at least one more chance to play.

(20:41):
And I don't care if anyone gets angry about that.
I really don't care. I care about the players on
my team and developing my team, and that's all I
care about. So we got those four alignment in and
they got the at least run one play, and there
it is, right. So if you want to get mad
about it right like that, that's your problem. That's not
an issue with anyone over here, right. I don't think

(21:02):
we did anything wrong in any sort of way, and
we're gonna we'll do it again the next time.

Speaker 2 (21:08):
It wasn't anything. I never even noticed that until someone
told me that after the game. I didn't even see,
I mean, any any of that.

Speaker 1 (21:14):
Our kids deserve a chance to play.

Speaker 2 (21:16):
Those kids work just as hard as the other kids.

Speaker 1 (21:18):
We're not gonna apologize for let our kids to play.

Speaker 2 (21:20):
Right ever, right, So that's uh, but you know it's
good to get those those guys need to get in
the game. They deserve get get get get some pt
so it's all good. So so that puts a rap
with on lasal or two and zero in the league.
And you know, we'll take a break and we'll come
back and talk about this other opponent we might know

didn't have a difficult opponent their first week, but the
next five weeks it seemed like they were in. They
were they were in games and and fighting and ye
coming out with victories.

Speaker 1 (23:27):
And they're they're playing. They play a tough schedules just
like we do. I don't know much about their game one,
but I mean when you play Covening Catholic, that's one
of the top, you know, teams in the state of
Kentucky and they're always competing for a state championship and
they have a really good quarterback. Over on that side,
they play Louisville Saint X, who's always competing for a
state championship, and they're really strong this year as well.

(23:47):
They played a tough Springbro team. And then you get
in the g c O and you play the sal
you play X and you got moler right like right
in a road just like you know we do. But
that that's what makes it challenging, right, So it's set
up a great game for the fans and a great
game for our players. I can't imagine being a high
school kid and and could you think of a better

(24:08):
high school situation to be in. You either play not
just an iconic venue in Cincinnati, but one of the
iconic venues in the country. Absolutely, and it's going to
be electric. So I think our guys are looking forward
to it like crazy, and I know they are as well.
So it'll be a fun night.

Speaker 2 (24:25):
It'll be the seventieth meeting between the two schools. We
have a forty to twenty nine edge. Of course, we're
going for our fourth straight GCL championships, so you know,
a lot on the line, but you can kind of
push that stuff aside. I mean, this is this is
a game obviously, both sides just want to win. And
you know, the Panthers are led by cad and Easttepp
and you know, as a thrower, you know, he's completing

(24:50):
almost seventy five percent of his passes seven touchdowns to interceptions.
But he also leads the gcl and brushing with one
hundred and fifty nine yards and four touchdowns on the ground. So, uh,
you know, he's he's a handful.

Speaker 1 (25:05):
Yeah, he's dynamic. I can't say enough good things about him.
I think he's electric. He reminds me of the Michael
Bittner kid that they had a couple of years ago.
Just like the style of play where I think they
throw they throw it really really well. They've commanded the
offense and then once you cover guys up, like they
take off and run and you know, the the improvisation

(25:26):
is what you can't predict and it's what's hard to
replicate in practice. So I think he's electric. I think,
you know, coach Ramsy does an awesome job putting him
in a good situation and giving him multiple options each play.
So he can be successful. And they're always gonna be
tough up front. They're always gonna be well coach. They're
always gonna have some some really tough wide receivers that

(25:46):
make those tough catches, and so they're really really talented
on offense. I think they're really really talented on defense too,
Like they had they got the injury bug last year
and now all those guys are able to get. All
those reps last year have now developed quite a bit
and they're playing really good on defense. They they've stifled
a lot of guys. I mean, they're they're a complete

(26:07):
team in every way, shape or form. They're solid on
special teams, so there is no weakness over on the
oulder Panthers.

Speaker 2 (26:13):
Yeah, they got another running back, Tommy Becker with three
hundred and eighty six yards and five run. Yes he is,
he's a hard runner. But also they you know, east
step when he does throw the ball, he's got four
receivers with with uh double digit catches, So so uh,
they kind of mix it up a little bit, and uh,
you know this is gonna be another fun one.

Speaker 1 (26:31):
Yep. They distribute the ball really well and they take
what the defense gives them. So and then they're aggressive too,
right like they I just can't say enough good things
about them that really impress watching them on film. So
it will be a fun night.

Speaker 2 (26:45):
And they will they will fight to the end. There's
no give up in those Panthers. So let's see what
we can do Friday night, coach, and let's uh, let's
let's keep this thing rolling. Hard to believe or run
halfway through the season time the regular season, so so
so let's keep it going and certainly a fun product
that's on the field. And I know people are enjoying it.

(27:06):
And you know, people need high school football and good
high school football, and that's what they're getting.

Speaker 1 (27:12):
Yep. Amen, all right, that's coach Burt Bathy.

Speaker 2 (27:15):
And as you're listening to the Bert Bathy Andy Show
sponsored by Comy and Shepherd Realtors, I'm Jeff Schneidl class
of nineteen eighty four. If you don't have a ticket
for the game, you can certainly tune us in as
we'll bring it to you from the pit. Just an
iconic venue for high school football and just a great
place and it's going to be a great atmosphere in

(27:36):
a beautiful night and you can hear it here, just
like this show on w MOOE and the Moler Broadcasting Network.
