Success in life.

Come what is it you want? Give your best effort,

Speaker 1 (00:04):
If you want to be a success, you gotta have.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
It's the Burt pathy Andy Coaches Shoe presented by Kobe
and Shepherd Reeltors And here's your host, Jeff Seed and
Buler head football coach Hurt Paty and.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
W Moe and the Molar Broadcasting Network present the Bert
Bathyani Show, which features the head coach of Moeler Football,
Bert Bathyani. The show is sponsored by Comy and Shepherd
Reeltors and I'm Jeff Schneiedel Class of nineteen eighty four
with Coomye and Shepherd Realtors able to handle all your
real estate needs, but also that class of nineteen eighty
(00:41):
four representing there. And it's always great to catch up
with the head coach of Molar Football, Bert Bathyany. Coach
back in the win column after a really solid game
against sant Ignatius.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Yep, I thought a guy's bounce back and had a
good week of practice and then perform well on Friday night.
So it's good to kind of get back in rhythm
and get our major back and flush that last game
out and start to move on.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
Well, well, and we'll talk about that game, you know,
a little bit more in depth. But you know that, honestly,
that game kind of I don't want to say I
was worried about it, just because I'd seen all the
teams that that team had played, and they certainly you know,
you know some teams you look at and you're like, Okay,
they don't even look that good. I mean, they looked good,
and I'm thinking, Okay, if they come out and it's
(01:25):
a game in the second half, it's one of those
type things. But but you know, we took care of
business early and that was a good thing.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Yeah. Well number one. It's a so like they're one
of the most storied programs in Ohio and a proud program. Yeah,
and we have nothing but respect for them. And all
those players grew up dreaming of being a Wildcat, right,
so and the head coaches in alum right, there's there's
a lot of pride within that program. So you just
never know what's going to happen. And the story that
(01:52):
we always tell our guys is there was years ago
where we were going through a struggle and I think
they were number one in the state and we go
on the the play at Otterbaine and we're I think
coach Rodenberg was the head coach, and they were on
their fifth quarterback, right like you said, and they win, right,
So you just in those type of games, you got
to throw the win loss record out the window because
(02:13):
anything can happen. If you go in er agant, you're
gonna get humbled pretty quick. So the message the whole
week was just worry about us. We try to play
a faceless opponent whenever we're playing and and and try
to get back to our mojo is really our focus
that week.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
And sometimes that wounded animal is the most dangerous and
fierce and you're not expecting it.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
To your point, they I think there was a ranking
out of like the toughest schedules in Ohio. I think
they were one and we were two. Right, Like, they
played a tough, tough schedule. So whenever you do that,
you're you're trying to figure out answer or quick figure
out the answers to the questions about your team, and
they were they were doing them a good job. They
scored thirty points on ed so right like they played
(02:56):
an inspired football game. So I thought they they were
dangerous on offense, and those running backs run extremely hard.
I think they just had some inconsistencies a quarterback. That
makes it tough.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
And coach, as we're taping this, the U the visitation
for Dylan Strong, you know, it's here at school. It's
it's it's it's kind of a somber day. I mean
we're here talking about football with that. But you know,
there was one thing that that did happen in the game.
Cooper McCutcheon caught, you know, a twenty seven yard touchdown
and he went and took the ball to Dylan's dad
in the end zone, which unscripted. I mean, there was
(03:31):
not I mean, he just he just did that, and
I mean that was pretty That was pretty powerful as
as Dylan's dad was there with I believe about twenty
family members and I mean for him to come to
the game, and honestly for the band to perform with
missing one of their people with and playing with a
heavy heart, I mean, that was really an incredible scene.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
Yeah, I'm really proud of the band for showing up
and adding to the environment. I mean, they're they're part
of this family just like anyone else. And you know,
when you think of high school football, I think one
of the first things people think of is the band, right,
like that music, that sound, they add so much to environments.
So I thought they did a great job honoring Dylan.
(04:13):
Dylan was very, very involved at this school. He had
a lot of reach, He had a lot of connection
to a lot of different people within his men, a
group within the band, within the theater, within the volleyball team.
So for them to come out like they honored Dylan
the way that Dylan should be honored because they that's
what he would. He loved doing that and and I
(04:34):
think he was there with us that night. And I'm
just really proud of them number one, because that they've
been through a tough, tough week.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Well, we're developing remarkable men. And unfortunately, this is a
difficult component that that the kids have to work through
and see it maybe for the first time, and and
it's hard. It's hard for the the adults, it's hard
for the whole community.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
And there's no there's no guidance, there's no playbook to
help you through something like this, right, Like you just
you have these raw emotions and you try to do
the best job you can and you show empathy to
each other. And you know what's sad is through tragedy,
it usually brings people together. You hate for a tragedy
to do that, but if if you want to try
(05:17):
to find a silver lining, I think that's one of them.
And to Cooper's credit, right, that's completely unscripted. I had
the family was there. I got to say I to
them before the game. I didn't get to see the
dad before the game. We didn't know that they were
sitting in the bleachers. I guess Cooper and I think
it was for the moment, like we we didn't know
where were throwing a touchdown to him in that corner
(05:39):
at that point in time, right, And immediately he runs
over gives them the ball, and then Sam Hamilton as
well went over and and I think I think he
hugged Dylan's dad as well. And before the game it
was senior day, right, and we honored our football seniors,
our band seniors, and and Matt Ponatowski walks out with this,
(05:59):
you know jersey up and he has Dylan written on
his white shirt, right, Like you didn't have to do
that either. So there's you know, what do you say
in a moment like that I'm proud of our guys.
I'm proud of the band. I'm proud of you know,
to be a part of Moller. And when tragedy strikes,
you get to see the true spirit of this place
(06:20):
come to life with so many people reaching out and
trying to help. You know, we had those stickers on
the back.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
Of our moment, which is a great tribute and.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Thoughts, and we got it from they they donated it,
and it was so a lot of people coming together
just to help.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
And it's as you said, it's there is a lot
of beauty with how people are very focused on this.
And you know, it's easy when you win games and
everyone gets excited with that. This is the tough time
and but but you do you see the best in
people with us. So Okay, let's uh, let's take our
first break. We're gonna come back and talk about that
saying ignacious As you're listening to the Bird Bathyani Show,

You're listening to w MOE and the Mollar Broadcasting Network
and the Bert Bathyani Show, which features the head coach
of Moler Football. Bert Bathyanni Show is sponsored by Comyan
Shepherd realtors. I'm Jeff Schneieddel with the class of nineteen
eighty four Molar High School and with Komyan Shepherd reeltors
and coach. You know, as we talked about Saint Ignacius
(08:59):
came in with the one in six record. But uh,
you know, not to be taken lightly. And we win
the toss. We defer they're they're driving, we get a
big turn We.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
Want it because Matt Ponatowski couldn't call it right, because
we're the home team. Our guys have been giving him
a pretty hard time eas Oh really, yeah, they might
need to like take away the calling of the coin
flip from him.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
Well, it better not be from many of his receivers
because he could turn the table and say, well, geez,
I don't I didn't see you out.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
It's this from Christian Harris from Connor, and it's from Stofka,
the Grant the defensive guys.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
So they're kind of the they're in the safe zone.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
You know. There is always heckling going on between those guys.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
That's and that's probably all good natured. So so Saint
Ignacious is driving, We get the turnover and we get
the ball and uh, we drive it down the field
and then havoc strikes.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
So so all of a sudden havoc right right in
the beginning here here, here they come Christian Harris and
Connor Cuzzo and Kuzo punches it in for a four
yard touchdown.
Speaker 1 (10:02):
Yeah. I think that's the second of the year. And
then Christian has one as well, obviously, But because to them,
they do a good job. They when we call that package,
our our team gets a little juiced and energize. So
it was fun to see, especially on senior night, right like,
give Connor a touch and let him go score.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
And you know, coach the cool thing with that. It's
one thing to have that in your playbook, but now
that it's been used several times in a couple of
different ways, it's not like when you have to call it,
it's like, Okay, this is something new we're trying, let's say,
and now it just seems like, you know, it's figured
out and we know what we got and it's there
ready to go.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
And we practice it every single week and there's always
something new each week. It might not get called in
the game, but that package just expands every week to
where there's a lot of options out of it that
some people. Most people don't see, but we know what
it's like in practice.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
So Nat just gets the ball back after we take
a seven to nothing lead, and after four plays, uh,
they basically punk the ball back to us and it
goes back and we start moving the ball again. I
thought was a couple of things. Number one, welcome back
land and Adams. And I know he scored a touchdown.
We'll talk about that, But am I correct that Tyler
(11:17):
caught the ball and had a great run. But Landon
Adams had the block down way downfield and took the
last guy out.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
Is that that right I was landing? So he's been
interesting to get back out on the field. I mean,
he's a weapon for us in a lot of different ways.
So we've missed him quite a bit. But a really
good job by Tyler getting open and he had a
lot of room to run.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
And he made his own room.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
He made his move and he goes But then and
Landon had the key block that sprung for a touchdown.
So the cool thing is after that after that play, right,
it's easy to say, like, hey, Tyler Johnson, great touch on,
But everyone in the heads at everyone the sideline immediately's like, wow,
land what a great block. And Tyler Johnson's the first
one that you know, congratulate him as well. So you
see that that camaraderie and that teamwork that that makes
(12:02):
that playven more special.
Speaker 3 (12:03):
And coach we have a really good core of receivers
and we've missed Landing and we've missed Ko. But when
I think when the younger guys kind of see that
and they see the importance of stay with your block,
keep it going, go to the whistle, I mean, that's
just invaluable. And really it really looks like the over
the last couple of years we've really had done a
good job with our receivers blocking, especially downfield.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
Yeah, well we say no block, no rock. If you
don't block, you ain't getting the ball thro on to you.
There you go playing. But Coach Cole and Coach Finn
do a really good job of getting those guys ready
and setting that example. That's always kind of the first
things that we really try to take pride on his
blocking on the perimeter. For as many screens that we throw,
you have to do that. And if you don't get
hands on a guy and protect your teammate like that,
(12:49):
that scheme just doesn't work. But kudos to the guys
who came beforehand who kind of paved the way for that.
But you got to take pride in that. Like as
a receiver, if there's six five plays in a game
average for an offense, and let's say you get the
ball five times, that's it, right, what are you doing
the other sixty? Right? You have to impact the game
(13:12):
in another way? And five catches, Like I think a
lot of kids would say, like, hey, like you get
I get five catches in a game, that's awesome, right, Like,
you can't always be like Jamar Chase getting sixteen, right, right,
But you get five, that's a pretty productive day. So
what are you doing though those other sixty You got
to be able to run your routes at the right depth,
at the right spot to open other guys within the
(13:33):
passing scheme, and you got to be able to block
on the perimeter too. So that's a big point of
emphasis to that group.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
So we kicked back off too ignacious. They drive the ball,
they go about seventy yards, they get on the scoreboard
with a field goal. We get the ball back and
just as you said, no block, no rock and land
and Adams with the block and guess what he gets
rewarded and welcome back Landing Adams.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
Yep. So we've been waiting for that play for quite
some time with him him, that's a staple for him,
is that kind of shot play Like we've been doing
that with him for I think, you know, three years now.
Before him, it was Matt Fogli. We ran that play
with but a really good adjustment by him, like he
was getting pressed to the last of scrimmage, got off
the line really well and then had to adjust his
route and then Matt had to throw it based off
(14:19):
the adjustment, which was a really good play too. So
normally it's like throwing on the hash. He had to
widen out a little bit and expand and Matt threw
it out there and then land and use his speed
and athleticism to go make the play.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
Coach, when someone comes back, especially like a senior, and
they have to sit and watch until they get healed up,
I mean a play like that, I mean, I don't
want to say like shake off the rust, but it's like,
you know, that had to just feel really good that Hey,
you know, I'm kind of like I'm not just like
back playing. I'm back and made a huge impact and
(14:50):
here we go.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
I think anytime you have an injury like that, we're
out for a certain period of time. I think there's
a there's a moment in time for affirmation where like
some something happens and you kind of take a moment
to pause and think, Okay, I'm good, right, whatever that
injury is, if it's a knee, if it's an ankle,
if it's a soft tissue injury, there's a moment where
(15:12):
something happens, you play and you feel like you're back
to normal, and then that confidence comes back. And I
think that hopefully that play was definitel ending, right, So
feeling confident after coming off the injury, and then now
he's in. Now he looks completely in practice, he looks great, right,
Like he looks completely back to normal, like everything is
the same, But it just takes for that moment in
(15:33):
the game to really feel like when the bullets are flying.
And he did a good.
Speaker 3 (15:37):
Job, so it was good to have him back, another
weapon in the arsenal. So that was in the second
quarter and then we get the ball back and again
that was when Cooper got the twenty seven yard pass
and delivered the football. Really a special moment there as
giving the ball to Dylan Strawn's dad, and then all
(15:58):
of a sudden, you knows comes back. They're down twenty
eight to three. They go on a nine place seventy
three yard drive and they finally they finally get a touchdown,
but we get the ball back and then Reggie Watson
just at the end with a with a touchdown catch.
Speaker 1 (16:12):
Yeah, really good throw by Matt. We had a double
move to Cooper and you know, they did a good
job covering it. And then Matt immediately just looks to
Reggie and thursday to the spot where he should be
is the back pylon. And that just comes from repetition
after repetition after repetition. Matt knew that Reggie is going
to be in a spot, he trusts his guy, he
knew the coverage and then just delivered a strike.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
Just it's really unbelievable. I mean, there's not a lot
of quarterbacks can make that throw at all levels.
Speaker 1 (16:40):
No, especially after coming off the first fred right, I mean,
it's it's just it's we get to see it every
day in practice. But that's a lot of the people
don't get to see the work that goes into that
week after week after week and the time it takes
to that takes to develop that trust between those two players.
So mean, it just doesn't happen.
Speaker 3 (17:01):
There's there's some work. Just like anything in life, it
take is going to have some work and some effort
into it. Good for them. And of course we went
into halftime with a thirty five to ten lead, and
and then early in the third quarter Reggie Watson again
with a thirty three yard touchdown pass.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
Yep, yep. So uh again, that's just Matt and Reggie
doing their thing. That was a check play, so Matt.
We give a lot of freedom to Matt to do that,
and he had the look, so we took it.
Speaker 3 (17:29):
All of a sudden, we get Ko back. I mean,
there's not gonna be enough footballs to go around for everybody. Yeah,
it is so all right, coach. So we wrapped up
Saint Ignatius, and you know they're fighting for their playoff life.
If they can even you know, they're gonna have to
do something. They don't have easy games out. But we're
not going to have any concern for them unless somehow
(17:49):
magically we'd see him at the end of the year.
But but that's that's a that's a tough spot for
them to be in.
Speaker 1 (17:55):
No, I know he they got they got X this
week and then they got the I got them Clerk,
the Clerk team from Clarkson from Canada. Right, that's a
good football team. They running clock Masslin right, bean heads
and Ed's kind of got after Clarkson. So they got
(18:15):
a tough, tough schedule in.
Speaker 3 (18:16):
The year, all right, So that puts a rap on
the Saint Ignacious game. We'll take a break, We'll we'll
talk about this week's upcoming opponent. They we're kind of
familiar with them, the Saint Edward Eagles. As you're listening

Welcome back to w MOE and the Molar Broadcasting Network
as you're tuned into the Burt Fathiani Show, featuring the
head coach of the Molar Fighting Crusader Football program. I'm
Jeff Schneidl class of nineteen eighty four. Show is sponsored
by Komy and Shepherd Realtors. And that's what I do
when I'm not doing the podcast and broadcast is coach.
(20:33):
We get to take on a seven to one Saint
Edward team and of course they had the one lost
to Maslon. But man, they're always just a solid program
and you know there always seemed to be there near
the end of the year.
Speaker 1 (20:48):
Yeah, I mean, they got a good recipe for success.
They're really good on defense, They run the ball really
really well. They got a quarterback that can make plays
when it's asda and they have a really strong running
game and a strong offensive line. So they have the
recipe to be really really successful and they're really good
at what they do.
Speaker 3 (21:04):
They have really good running back Brandon White, which are
you sure it's not the same brand and White that
was here. It's just funny with the same name, the.
Speaker 1 (21:11):
Same name, now that u two completely different. This kid's
explosive as can be too, but yeah, he packs a
little bit more of a punch ern in between the tackles.
Speaker 3 (21:19):
Well it'll be it'll be a handful there. So uh,
coach will make the trip up and back to Saint
Edward and you know what, let's uh, let's get used
to driving that I seventy one corridor up the northeast
O High Let's let's let's uh, let's make that a
regular thing there. So, so three o'clock games, so nothing
kind of crazy there. I mean, they don't have to
(21:40):
be out of totally at the crack of dawn, but
I'm not going to get back at like one am
or something. So it's just just going to take most
of Saturday and let's uh, let's see we can go
up and do with the Eagles.
Speaker 1 (21:51):
Yeah. The good thing is just with our schedule, we're
used to traveling to games like this. So whether it's
you know, if we're going to Masslin for a scrimming,
or if we're going to Cleveland to play Iggy or Ads,
or if we're going even Ironton playing that classic game,
or down to Tennessee. Our guys are used to being
in a bus and they enjoy it. They have a
(22:11):
ton of fun. Just that's one of the kids. The
game I mean of this season is just the time
on the bus together.
Speaker 3 (22:18):
You're hanging with your buddies, You're just you're rolling down
the highway.
Speaker 1 (22:21):
And that's those are the moments that they'll remember later
on life. As much as you know it's fun to
win games, the score slip your brain, the stats everyone forgets,
and the things that you remember are the relationships and
those experiences on the bus with your your brothers.
Speaker 3 (22:38):
You mentioned Ironton. Are we going back there next year?
Do we know that's true?
Speaker 1 (22:45):
Don't know?
Speaker 3 (22:45):
Okay, just kind of curious love love going to that place,
and it's it's it's it's not bad. So all right, coach,
let's have a great trip up to Cleveland. Our last
Saturday game of the year. So it should be Fridays
from here on out, so Friday about that Friday night lights.
So but then a short week you kind of you
lose a little bit of time and but uh yeah,
(23:08):
get back to the rhythm.
Speaker 1 (23:09):
We got, we gotta, we gotta. No one's gonna feel
sorry for us, right, don't tell me how rocky the
sea is. Just bring the ship home. So our guys
had that mindset, we'll be ready to roll.
Speaker 3 (23:18):
And uh, really kind of what's on the line if uh,
if we do well at St. Ed's, can get that
first round, by which you know, it is just such
a grind for the kids. And you know, just get
guys you know a little. It's kind of like a
catch twenty two. It's great that you kind of might
may have the time off. People can get healed up
because they get nicked up and beat up during the year.
But I'll see always every thing of getting out of rhythm,
(23:40):
especially if you have an offense that's.
Speaker 1 (23:42):
That's on track. Yeah, I think, you know, I think
that's a debatable. That's a good, you know, thing to
think about, right, Like, there's I think there's positives to both.
There's good to being in rhythm and staying in rhythm,
but there's good to get a break and get you know,
some time off. I think you can't make a big
deal about it one way or other because whatever your
circumstances are, that's what you have to deal with, right
