If you do choose to go that route, then please
hit like and subscribe. This certainly helps us out. Hey,
everybody tonight's show. Everybody loves a Bible game, and.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
We have the Raiders and the comics East.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Carter and West Carter.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
West Carter will be making that fifteen mile trip across
town to East to play this game.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
We have both head football coaches, unusual, but we have.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
Both had football coaches on our show tonight, Tim Chaplin,
who's the head football coach at East Carter and Daniel Barker,
who is the head football coach at West Carter. There'll
be our two guests tonight, so please stay on and
they'll be on here shortly.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
David, bring them on in just a second.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
Our tough topic that will address tonight is from Hunter
Kentwell of the head football coach of cal And Man.
Hunter just gives us good questions after good questions. He's
done several of these. But his question for tonight is
for coaches in smaller classes, smaller rosters, how do you
(02:22):
determine who plays JV in regards to guys that don't
start varsity but are needed on Friday nights? What is
the threshold for canceling games? And then what number is
too low to play a JV game? Man, what a
good question and he just does a great job with that.
(02:43):
Our games of the week a couple more rival games.
We got Ashland and Russell, and we got Beechwood and
Covington Catholic. Boy, that's going to be a barn burner
up in Northern Kentucky. Northern Kentucky is really good in
football this year. They got four or five team teams
that are really really good. Just a little bit about
(03:04):
our two head football coaches before we bring them one
here first. Coach Chaplain Tim Chaplin of East East, the
East Carter Raiders.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
He's currently three and one.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
Okay, they've won, you know, three of these games in
a row. He's coming off a four straight winning season,
went eleven and four and made it to the fourth round,
which is the semi finals. What a great year. What
a great season that twenty twenty one team was. He's
been the head football coach here, I believe since twenty fifteen.
(03:37):
He's the longest tenure head coach in East Carter football.
He has the most career wins of anybody that's ever
coached at East Carter. So, man, what a great job.
He personally has four wins over West Carter in his
in their rival game, he's won three in a row,
going for four, so he's won the last three this rivalry.
(04:01):
If he wins this Friday, it'll be four in a row.
Now on the other side, who's going to try to
prevent that is Daniel Barker. And Daniel is the head
football coach of the comments of West Carter. He's currently
two and two. He is a hometown guy, so he
knows all about it. He knows all about this rivalry.
(04:21):
He bleeds, you know, the West Carter comet blood. He's
trying to right He's trying to right this shift. He's
coming off of three losing seasons, and this is three
losing city seasons after that great year he had in
twenty twenty when they made it to the semi finals.
(04:43):
I mean, it's pretty awesome to make it to the
semi finals now, it really is. That's a pretty good
finish for any anybody's football season. He's been the head
football coach at the West Carter since twenty eighteen. He
has three wins personally over East Carter. So it's four
and three right now. According to this game, he has
(05:03):
a chance to tie this thing up with tim West
has dropped. They've dropped down to two A this year,
so that's not quite the same kind of well, it
is the rival game, there's no question is the rival game,
but it's not anything to do with the district play anymore.
It's the earned two A now since David, since nineteen
(05:25):
ninety eight, twenty seven times, that's as far back as
I can research, East Carter has won thirteen times and
West Carter has won fourteen times in this rival So
East Carter wins. They tied up West Carter wins. They
starting to pull away. So it's gonna be a great game.
It's going to be a great atmosphere. You want to
(05:47):
bring them on, David, I do.
Speaker 5 (05:49):
I'm glad have to be careful because I could talk
twenty minutes about each one of them. I love these guys.
I'm so proud of them. I bump into them at quarterback.
Things actually had Daniel at camp up, so I'm not
gonna I will say this to a little side note.
Daniel when we played him in our bowl game at Mercer,
I almost started Troshpre at quarterback.
Speaker 6 (06:10):
He was a sophomore. Kaylen Brayford was a senior.
Speaker 5 (06:13):
But I knew that the whole town underestimated West Carter
and I wasn't gonna put Trispra in that spight, so
I went with Kaylan and Daniel proved me right. They
played our tails off. We were lucky to get out
of there, and I'm not gonna ask Daniel to releave
this one. But they had Beach would be They really
(06:34):
did it, had an incredible deal. But these guys have
done a great job. I bumped into Tim. He's a
product of pipefulle football. And like I said, I can
go on and on about these guys, so to give
me to shut up, I just want to say this.
When I was at Mason County, I loved going to
Grayson and Olive Hill. Those are great places for high
(06:55):
school football. And I just, man, I'm so thankful because
I had no idea, but they are very special places.
So before I before I shut up and let Chuck
get going, I got one question. What time are we
playing Inner Sandman on Friday night? To get this thing going,
because that's when you know you're in Eastern Kentucky. Is
when they crank up Inner Sandman. You know you're in
(07:19):
the mountains and we are playing some football tonight. I
just can't hardly stand it. I'm so excited about it. So, hey,
what time does that hit the speakers Friday night?
Speaker 7 (07:29):
I guess it's seven twenty seven, right before kicking.
Speaker 6 (07:32):
Oh Man, seven twenty seven.
Speaker 5 (07:36):
I can't all right, Hedy, I'm gonna be quiet, Chuck,
you better ask the first question. I'm gonna I'm gonna
get carried away. I can't even stand it. Go ahead, couch, Chuck.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
Hey, guys, this question'll be for both of you. Okay,
it's as the head football coach at your school. What's
the most rewarding part? And then what's been the toughest
part Being at East Carter and West.
Speaker 7 (07:57):
Carter great coach.
Speaker 5 (08:01):
Uh, you know, I'm a hometown guy. Uh so being
at West you know, I think, Uh, I'm not really
like you know, neither me or Tim we're like the
same age. We're not very old, but you know, like
getting to like see the progress of kids. You know,
he's been at the East Corner a long as long
(08:21):
enough that you know, kids that we have coached are
now emerging in leadership roles in the community. You know,
there's there's kids that we've that we've seen and we
kind of want to grow up and uh you know
now some of them coach with us or teach with us,
or you know, we go to church with him there
our friends, And I just think whenever you really establish
(08:42):
roots somewhere.
Speaker 7 (08:43):
You can just see a lot of you can see
a lot of good things over the time.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (08:49):
You know, the worst thing, man, there's nothing there's nothing
bad about being here.
Speaker 6 (08:54):
Man.
Speaker 5 (08:55):
I love all the only place I ever wanted to be, Uh,
you know, and I've talked to our kids. You know,
we struggling in the last couple of years. But you know, whenever,
whenever you have the run that we have, you know,
you have opportunities to move on.
Speaker 7 (09:07):
And I mean I was never interested in me that
you know, this is where I want to be and
and this is where I want to raise my kids
and and just thankful to have a job here.
Speaker 8 (09:19):
The best part I'm gonna build off what Coach Parker
said there is is just seeing seeing those first groups
of kids go off and use use some of the
stuff that you've taught them in life, see them emerge
into leadership roles.
Speaker 7 (09:34):
I've got uh, two guys on.
Speaker 8 (09:38):
Staff that that played for me, a room full of
guys that that played here, and then in our middle
school is staff has made up of a ton of
guys that played for me. And then starting now to
get those kids in here that have been in our
program since I've been the head coach. You know, it's
(09:59):
all that's all we know is is coach Chaplin so
uh and seeing those guys and merge and rise and
new things and uh, our quarterback, you know, I go
to church with him. Several other kids on our team
that you know, I remember them running around in nursery
when I first got there, and now uh, now they're
there on the field playing for us, and and that
(10:20):
kind of thing. So that's been an exciting part seeing seeing.
Speaker 4 (10:23):
Our program grow grow from you know.
Speaker 7 (10:26):
Where we were, so where we are, uh has.
Speaker 8 (10:30):
Been a great thing. Has been exciting. Uh and and
it's been fun and uh. And then the hardest part
for me is being the standard at which we've we've
kind of set here and the expectation, uh, that our
community has for our program and our coaches, and and
(10:52):
trying to fulfill that that expectation and to rise to
those challenges each and every week.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Yeah, let me kind of stirred up a little bit.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
Who is the under the same board of education, Who
is the favorite amongst who gets the most up?
Speaker 6 (11:13):
Don't be starting. Nobody's gonna be on our show anymore.
Speaker 5 (11:16):
If you're starting trouble, God, who would have not he'd
be the one starting problems instead of me.
Speaker 6 (11:22):
I'll say this.
Speaker 5 (11:23):
I'll say this, one of our stadiums has grass and
one of them doesn't.
Speaker 7 (11:31):
Like mud though, So listen, I mean, I guess they
wanted to give us some meat. I'd say we like
the mud.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
There we go. Now it's now the truth is coming out.
Speaker 6 (11:39):
Hey. So here's my first question.
Speaker 5 (11:42):
Being such a big rivalry game in your community, does
that change how you prepare for this week compared to
your other nine opponents.
Speaker 8 (11:50):
I'm will I'm gonna answer that first. Yes, it does
for us, But.
Speaker 5 (11:55):
Thanks for being honest, thanks for not giving us the
old Oh, all the games go ahead.
Speaker 8 (12:03):
I tried to approach it that way my first five
six years here, and uh, I think after the sixth year.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
We got beat in a row.
Speaker 8 (12:11):
I thought we better change something or they're gonna run
me out of here before I got a chance to
do anything. So, uh, it's something that I mean for
for us, and I think it's as much the community
and everything. You know, when the schedule comes out, everybody
wants to know when East West game is. Everybody wants
to know, you know, is it, who, who's hosting it,
who's what, who's got it? And you know, for us,
(12:34):
for a long time, we were on the we were
on the bad end of it, and so we you know,
we started incorporating things throughout uh the off season and
pre season and things like that, just to to show
the importance of the game for a community. It is
a big It is a big game for a community.
Speaker 7 (12:54):
For us, we lost it in twenty one and.
Speaker 4 (12:55):
Went on to to win the.
Speaker 8 (12:58):
Regional championship played in the state Semis and people are
still he lost to West.
Speaker 4 (13:07):
That's just that's part of it.
Speaker 5 (13:09):
That was us in nineteen you know. We we played
in the regional championship in nineteen and and somebody did
stop me a gief on East, asked why we didn't
beat the East.
Speaker 6 (13:18):
Yeah, I love it. That's how it is. That's how
it is.
Speaker 8 (13:23):
It's it is, and it's uh, I like to say this.
You know, I've only been a part of for eleven years.
Coach Park has been a part of for a low
farmer than that. But it's the real battle for the barrel.
There's another local game that's been coined as the Battle
for the Barrel, but East West is the true battle
for the bar.
Speaker 6 (13:41):
And Amen, amen, Amen, I.
Speaker 5 (13:45):
Mean I always kind of think I don't really, I mean,
and you know, I've never been to other places, you know,
I did a few years at East, and I had
been at West. But I mean, if there's a if
there is a more true rivalry in northeast Kentucky.
Speaker 7 (13:58):
I'd like to see it.
Speaker 5 (14:01):
You know, Coach Damern that used to coach it at
East Uh he told me one time he'a the man.
People are either from Grayson or Allville. They're not from
Carter camp And County. They you know, you're from a county.
Speaker 7 (14:16):
You know, I'm from Boyd County.
Speaker 5 (14:17):
Wherever it's all it's grace And or Allville and and
that's true.
Speaker 7 (14:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (14:22):
Yeah, Well that's why I'm glad you guys are on
this show because I just feel like you guys are
sort of a hidden gym. I don't think people realize
how cool your places are, and this rivalry takes it
to another level. So but hey, Chuck Awa with your
next question.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
Yeah, let me let me give the next question here.
You know, hey, guys, I love rival games.
Speaker 7 (14:43):
I really do.
Speaker 3 (14:43):
I've been a part of a few of them in
my lifetime, and I love rival games.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
What's the energy like on campus this week?
Speaker 8 (14:50):
It's pretty electric. You know, people are excited about it.
It's it's the big game. It's you know, we're hosting
it this year, so there'll be a lot of you know,
our students action will have a big tailgate and their
alumni is doing something and we'll have you know, all
that stuff going on. It's like I told her a
team today, it's it's one of those cool things.
Speaker 4 (15:09):
About playing high school football.
Speaker 1 (15:11):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (15:11):
It's being able to do you know, things like that
and have your hometown come out and support you.
Speaker 7 (15:17):
And uh. So we're gonna tough of that. We're gonna
do it and and the kids enjoy it and they
have fun with it.
Speaker 8 (15:22):
So it's just something exciting and fun.
Speaker 4 (15:26):
For them to do.
Speaker 8 (15:27):
But as far as the atmosphere at the game, I
think I've got a picture hanging in my room from
one of those twenty nineteen maybe uh that game was here,
wasn't it, coach, Because that came here twenty I think so.
Speaker 7 (15:42):
It is one of the biggest crowds I've ever seen here.
Place was packed out.
Speaker 8 (15:47):
I think everybody in Quarter County was here. And uh
and it's just always an electric atmosphere, a big crowd,
a fun game to be a part of. And uh
and and no matter if your home or away, it's
close to the enough that that you usually have a
big enough crowd that you feel like you're at a
home game. You got both student sections there, fired up
and bands and all that fun stuff.
Speaker 7 (16:09):
So it's a good time, awesome.
Speaker 6 (16:12):
Good all right, So hey, the last question here.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
This can you answer that question too?
Speaker 5 (16:19):
Oh my bad, I'm sorry, I got around up. I'm
just excited, Daniel, go ahead, I'm sorry. Yeah, you know, uh,
I mean that's that that'll be the talking point you know,
in town or it's cool. You know, we're we're on
the road. But you know, our kids have already started
playing pet buses and I mean it, you know, it
(16:41):
really is a big deal. You know, like Coach said earlier,
it is the one game people ask about.
Speaker 9 (16:47):
So yeah, I don't know if you've never been there,
I really like Coach Smith, I don't know if you've
ever seen either of our stadiums, but there's not really
there's not really very many bleachers there, and I mean
you can't even walk.
Speaker 7 (17:00):
I don't.
Speaker 5 (17:00):
I can't imagine going and watching them day, like you know,
I mean, it is, it is deep.
Speaker 6 (17:09):
Everybody in Core County will be there.
Speaker 5 (17:11):
Uh. So you know, kids on both sides are excited,
but you know, so early adults. Yeah, and you know, uh,
you know, I'm from here. Coach has been here long
enough tea might as well be from here. You know,
our staffs will be excited about it too.
Speaker 3 (17:27):
And hey, did you'll have any pep rallies or anything?
Because we have a pep rally in school or do
y'all do those?
Speaker 7 (17:35):
What? We won't? We? We do the Fired Up Friday
there at six a m.
Speaker 8 (17:39):
In the morning, which is like a big peper rally,
But we won't do one, Dare in school.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
Yeah you'll have one, you know.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
Yeah you don't have one either, Daniel.
Speaker 5 (17:51):
No, I think we probably will we we we probably. Well,
I haven't heard. We've got a student council that takes
care of all that. And I kind of like just
surprised me if you're doing it. I don't want you
want me to do a game?
Speaker 2 (18:07):
I'll do.
Speaker 5 (18:08):
Hey, you may not want to answer, but I'm really curious. Uh,
what's your what are what's the gate you all make
on these games?
Speaker 6 (18:16):
What's your gate?
Speaker 1 (18:17):
Like?
Speaker 5 (18:19):
They don't tell you do that, They don't want you
to know about the money?
Speaker 7 (18:22):
We Uh, I mean I think it's a pretty good gate.
Speaker 4 (18:27):
Uh we we.
Speaker 7 (18:29):
It's been a topic, a hot topic of conversation.
Speaker 6 (18:33):
Oh hey, now we're getting into real coaching. Stuff. Daniel,
what about you? Could you answer the gate question? I
would say just the gate.
Speaker 5 (18:45):
I want to say the first year as a head coach,
we made we make close to Team Green at the gate.
But I don't know, I mean, it was it's you
formal gate for us. Is you know a big game.
You know a lot of people. There's about three third
four grand Yeah, yeah, I guess awesome.
Speaker 6 (19:06):
I'm sure whatever the fires.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
Yeah, all of the sports at East Carter this year,
the secondary sports, the spring sports are gonna be dressed
really nice because of this game.
Speaker 5 (19:20):
Yeah, hey, there's more true, No kid, Hey now, hey,
this this one's a tough one.
Speaker 6 (19:27):
But you know, but you guys, he just shoot straight
with us. We all hear this. Carter Carter County High
School is going to open up.
Speaker 5 (19:35):
What's gonna happen in regards to the football program at
that high school?
Speaker 6 (19:38):
Any idea of how they will choose a head coach?
What what's gonna happen with that?
Speaker 5 (19:42):
And I can say this because I'm not one of
you all, and so I don't want you to respond
because I don't want to get you in trouble. I'll
just say this. I would hate to lose East Carter
and West Carter High School. I love those places. I
think they're awesome, don't you answer. I don't want you
in the superintendent's office tomorrow morning, but I wish you
(20:02):
all keep them. But anyway, if this is gonna happen,
what are they going to do about football and how
they're gonna pick a head coach? Because man, they got
two of the best young coaches in the state at.
Speaker 6 (20:11):
East and West Carter. You all are awesome.
Speaker 7 (20:21):
How's Zach Bore.
Speaker 6 (20:24):
Say that again?
Speaker 8 (20:25):
I said, HW's Zach Moore, who's the principal at West Carter.
I coached under coach Barker's coach undering. I guess we
get the band back together and get after it.
Speaker 4 (20:35):
I don't know.
Speaker 7 (20:37):
I don't know.
Speaker 8 (20:38):
I mean, I'll be honest with you, and Coach can
go into more depth about it if he wants to.
Speaker 7 (20:43):
But when they first started talking about that, it was
a real concern.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (20:48):
I love it here. UH have put down roots here
and really enjoyed here, and didn't.
Speaker 4 (20:54):
Know how that would all work out.
Speaker 8 (20:55):
And UH really really concerned myself with it for my
eight months and and I just got to the point
to where I said, you know what, I'm gonna worry
about the raiders. I'm gonna take care of the raiders,
and the good Lord will take care of me. And
if he wants me at quarter County, I'll be at
quarter County. If he wants me, go somewhere else, and
I'll go somewhere else.
Speaker 4 (21:15):
And well, rock and roll.
Speaker 8 (21:17):
But uh, at the end of at the end of
the day, I'm I'm gonna.
Speaker 7 (21:21):
Worry about the raiders.
Speaker 8 (21:22):
Where my feet are I figured out real fast, and
I can't take care of anything in the future. I
can't worry about the fast. So I'm gonna put it
in a good Lord's hand and go with it.
Speaker 5 (21:30):
So, Hey, I just hate to tell you this. I
think your mental health is too good to be a
head football coach. I think you're right have to look
for another job because that was really good. I don't
wish I could be like that, but I can't do it. Daniel,
what do you think about all this? Well, I mean,
you know, like I mean, you have to think about it.
And now I don't know how fast all that's gonna be.
(21:52):
I don't I don't know that that will be as
fast as you know. The original plan so you never know.
I mean, but you can worry about the future, you know,
like like coach said, you know, be in the moment
and and what will happen will happen, and and you know,
I'm I'm the opinion that uh probably me nor Kim
(22:12):
are gonna have much say so in it either way,
Jews and uh you know, and and and and that's
that's fine too, you know. But I mean, I don't
know how long it'll take. You know, they were saying,
what twenty eight twenty nine.
Speaker 6 (22:30):
I mean that's ways off, you know, so so who knows.
Speaker 7 (22:39):
You never know.
Speaker 5 (22:41):
You know, one of us may may be called in
another direction, you know, another profession or something by then
you never know, uh so you but but it will
work out. I mean that that the way I look
at it is is we've got good people working in
Carter County. And you know, whenever whenever that happens, you know,
good people are are gonna please out on coaching jobs.
(23:03):
But we all know each other well, n we probably
all worked together anyway.
Speaker 6 (23:09):
I got you.
Speaker 3 (23:10):
Manut Friday night and when in uh this big battle
for the barrel.
Speaker 5 (23:16):
Yeah, and you guys, you all I knew you all
were gonna kill it.
Speaker 6 (23:21):
I knew you were gonna kill it, and you did
kill it. And I'm not gonna I don't wanna get
I'm getting known, I'm getting too emotional.
Speaker 5 (23:28):
But uh, I hope before I die, I can take
a team back one night and go to East Carter
to another night, go to West Carter.
Speaker 6 (23:37):
I love those places. They were so cool, and uh.
Speaker 5 (23:40):
It's it's funny because it's like when I went to
Mason County, I knew Burt bratch Off from West Carter.
I made him a camp so I knew I'd heard
of West Carter. But I just I just I just
feel like I had I not had those experiences, I
feel like I would have missed out on.
Speaker 6 (23:56):
A big chunk of life.
Speaker 5 (23:57):
And uh, you guys are doing a great job at
wonderful places.
Speaker 6 (24:01):
And I do want to say this.
Speaker 5 (24:03):
I think sometimes if we're in the place for a while,
we can take it for granted. I think you guys
are in special places. I really do, and you're in
really cool places. And I can tell you I talk
to a lot of guys that in different situations that
I think would kill to be in your communities where
you're supported, like you are, and you're so important to
(24:26):
those young people as leaders because you're really good men.
Besides being really coached good coaches, you're really good men.
And like I said, I'm I'm really excited that we
had you all on here. I love East Carter, I
love West Carter, and I hope it ends into time.
They send you both home they split that barrel. I
(24:47):
know you don't want to split the barrel in the half.
Everybody goes home happy. That's what I would want because
I love all.
Speaker 6 (24:53):
Of you guys.
Speaker 4 (24:54):
I know appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (24:56):
I appreciate you guys to try to endure this game
as much as you can. And not everybody gets to
coach in a rival game where it means so much
to the not only the kids, but to the community.
Like you guys are going to coach in this and
you've done it before, and just try to enjoy it
and whether win or lose, and I know you won't
(25:17):
if you lose, you won't, but try to anyway.
Speaker 7 (25:21):
And good coach, We appreciate it.
Speaker 8 (25:24):
But Coach Smith, I know, Coach Buchanan's busy there on
Friday night, but.
Speaker 7 (25:29):
You decide you want to make the trip up sixty
four and stop off from Grace and watch a good game.
Speaker 8 (25:34):
We'd love to have you. I'll put you on the
past game. You said anywhere you want.
Speaker 3 (25:38):
Hey, that's a great invitation. But I've been helping my
son at South Warren.
Speaker 7 (25:44):
So I got you.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
I'm gonna be learned that game. But that was a
great invitation that it'll be pretty tempting. If I was
ever going to miss a game, that would might be
the deal. I would miss it one.
Speaker 5 (25:55):
Amen, Amen, guys A thank you all A have a
blast and four days soak it up and enjoy every second. Okay, Hey,
just being an old coach that knows you and loves you,
I'm so proud of you too. I'm so proud of
you all. Keep being you, keep doing what you're doing
Kentucky high school football. It's better because you two guys
(26:15):
keep doing. Thank that was good, David.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
That was a great idea about you and uh.
Speaker 6 (26:22):
Well, nice job.
Speaker 2 (26:25):
They didn't call each other names or anything.
Speaker 5 (26:30):
Well, that's the cool I know from our relationship, Tim
and Danie'll have a good relationship. They get along well.
They're both really good coaches. They've both done a really
good job where they are and uh, I'm I'm very
proud of them. I'm very proud of them. And uh,
like I said, I'm really thankful that I got to
(26:50):
experience Friday night high school football in eastern Kentucky at Grayson,
Kentucky and Olive Hill.
Speaker 6 (26:57):
It's it's cool, it's cool. It's a really cool player
to go play high school football.
Speaker 3 (27:01):
And when you took your Mason County teams up, there
was a pretty nice crowd.
Speaker 6 (27:06):
Yes, there were that. We did have some good crowds.
Speaker 5 (27:08):
And you know, those small communities, their high school football
team is really important to them.
Speaker 6 (27:16):
It's a big deal. And I don't know, I think
that's so cool it is.
Speaker 5 (27:22):
I mean, they're you know, like I love people will
they'll say, well, you know UK or UFL football is
big because there's no NFL team. Well, in those little towns,
those guys, those football players, they're the heroes. Those little
kids look up to them and they they want to
be like them, and they're they're really cool.
Speaker 6 (27:42):
Boil it was like that a Boil absolutely well.
Speaker 2 (27:46):
Community love their football team and it.
Speaker 6 (27:49):
Was all and Anderson's like that.
Speaker 5 (27:52):
And that's one of the reasons I really like it
At Anderson County, and I'll tell people, I feel like
I got to slice of September nineteen seventy County High
It's just like the other day we had a pep
rally and the kids are all walking into the gym,
and I mean it did it felt like Boyle County
nineteen seventy. It was that same vibe of Hey, these
(28:12):
are our guys, this is our home, this is our team.
We had youth Night this past week and had all
the little kids there and it's just and it's I
didn't even realize this, but I saw on social media
our cheerleaders were letting the youth lead cheerleaders do stunts
with them. They were holding them up in the air,
(28:33):
getting to do stuff. And men, you just you can't
beat stuff like that. And then our band we have
got we really do. We have the best band in
the state of Kentucky at Anderson County. They're phenomenal and
they just really make that a phenomenal atmosphere. And you know,
I mean, at the end of the day, if the
(28:54):
scoreboard didn't come out, we got one more point than
the other team.
Speaker 6 (28:57):
I'm not going to cope with it.
Speaker 5 (28:59):
Well, I never have a will, but I tell you
what I feel like every Friday night at Bob Warefield.
Speaker 6 (29:06):
It's like gold. It really is, and I'm so thankful
for it.
Speaker 5 (29:10):
And I'm really I'm sort of getting like it's an
out of body of experience because I'm like part of
me since back and says, can you believe you're sixty
years old and you're still getting to do this?
Speaker 4 (29:21):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (29:21):
I am, and I'm really thankful that I get to.
Very thankful.
Speaker 3 (29:25):
Hey, let's get on with the tough topic, okay, And
our question is from Hunter Kentwell, he's the head football
coach of Call and he's given us several questions on
our podcast and they're always excellent questions. But his question
for tonight is for coaches, and it's a great question
for coaches that are in small classes, have smaller rosters.
(29:49):
How do you determine who plays in JV in regards
to guys that don't start varsity but are needed on
Friday nights? What's the threshold for canceling games? And what
number is too low to play a JV game?
Speaker 2 (30:05):
What do you think?
Speaker 5 (30:06):
Well, first, I want to say those are really difficult
questions and just my opinion, I think the coaches that
fight through those questions and play freshmen in JV games
can build programs. I think the ones that get fed
up with it and don't really fight those battles, I
think it's really hard to build. I mean, it is
a hassle. It is a hassle, but I think you
(30:27):
got to do it. So here's what I came up with.
Typically for us, but not always, every non senior who
does not start will play JV. Part of what makes
this work. We play six minute quarter freshman games followed
by a six minute quarter JV game, So our guys
get rest, but they don't get beat to death. And
we have a tiebreaker that's in just a single two
(30:48):
point conversion. That protects bodies. It gets people to go home. Now,
as far as how many kids, Henry Boone at Mason County,
he took twelve guys Flatwoods to play Russell High School.
They won twelve guys. In fact, that was the first
Mason County team to ever win in Flatwoods.
Speaker 6 (31:08):
But he took twelve guys.
Speaker 5 (31:09):
So I think if you got twelve, I think you
play and you tell the coach man we can only
play six minute quarters because we're thin. But I think
you try to play because kids need live reps of
freshman games. Practice is staffing, it's tedious, it takes a
lot of work in planning and resources, and a lot
(31:30):
of programs give up on it because it's hard. But
I think that's the most critical piece of player development
for us is how many live reps can we get
for our guys. And as the varsity head coach, I
don't really look at these as games. I see them
as practices, And I say to myself, how many live
reps can every defensive end get closing and attacking and squeezing.
(31:53):
How many reps can that inside linebacker get getting this read?
How many outside linebacker reachs can we get high hat,
low at? And then I really like this, and I've
started to do more of it. We send our kids
huddle notes, like I'll make a note, I'll watch the tape,
I'll make notes, and I send it to them because
I want them to learn from it. But also I
want to know, man, you all are really important to me,
(32:16):
and you're these games are important, and I think that's
the only gasoline on a fire. I think quality position
coaches and including the freshman JV coaches and live reps
are the most important piece of player development, so a
lot with the weight room, developing your.
Speaker 6 (32:31):
Ability to move.
Speaker 5 (32:32):
I think you got to find a way to do
it even if you're super thin. But I do think though,
because you can be really thin, like with low numbers,
you need to be playing other coaches that you can
work with, and you can say, hey, can we play
a shorter game, can you can you not kill me tonight?
Can you play some lesser kids? And you know, I
think that's the route you need to go.
Speaker 3 (32:54):
I mean, and you are on the same page we
are with this, With this answer this question, I don't
think I can really add anything that you didn't include
in there. It's you answered it really really well, just
like same philosophy that I have. You know, I think
if you have h you know, you know, if they
play varsity and they're in the rotation, uh, then you know,
(33:16):
if you can help they don't play varsity has to
be the priority.
Speaker 2 (33:21):
That's what it's all about, you know.
Speaker 3 (33:23):
But everybody else is is is is good to go
when it comes to a JV or game or freshman
game for that matter. But JA JAV games, as you said,
I thought I always looked at them as developmental. You know,
next you know, they're trying to get these guys ready
to potentially start, you know, next year.
Speaker 2 (33:43):
I did not include seniors.
Speaker 3 (33:46):
Winning wasn't the priority, you know, And I didn't really
care if we won or lost the JV game. Winning
the varsity game is the priority.
Speaker 5 (33:55):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (33:55):
They just needed reps. As you said, that's what they need.
They need reps. And you know, I don't know if
I ever in my entire career cancel the JV game.
I don't If I did, I don't remember. I just
don't think I ever did. I would do everything I
could to play the game as far as numbers go.
If I had twelve guys, those twelve guys.
Speaker 2 (34:16):
Are going to go play the game. Yeah, And as
you did, you know I would.
Speaker 3 (34:21):
I would even bring freshmen up to play in the
JV game. I played a lot of freshmen at jvams
just for numbers.
Speaker 10 (34:28):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (34:28):
You know, I would even call There was times when
I even would call the the opponent, the opponent coach,
and I would say, hey, you know, I only got
this many kids. I got a couple of seniors here
that don't play. They're not in the rotation. Can I
send them just so you can play a game? And
I've had coach call me and ask me. I say, heck, yeah,
(34:50):
I want to play the game. Send whoever you want
to sit. It doesn't matter to me.
Speaker 2 (34:54):
I don't care if we win or not. I want
them to play.
Speaker 5 (34:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (34:58):
So we we always did every that we could, you know,
to try to play the game other than play, you know,
a varsity starter. And uh, you know, I never ever
wanted to cancel the game. Uh you know, they don't
get that many They excuse me, they practice all year
wrong and they don't get that many games. And I
never wanted that game to be canceled. I would do
(35:19):
everything in my power, uh to keep that game alive.
And that's that's basically the things that you said.
Speaker 2 (35:27):
And that's that's what I believe.
Speaker 5 (35:29):
Well, I think it's I think it's hard work to
follow through and really do it the right way, But
I think it's what you gotta do. And uh, you know,
I still got it. I may share it because I
got a picture of it.
Speaker 6 (35:42):
My dad.
Speaker 5 (35:43):
Uh he wanted it boil like to keep his freshman
in sophomore separate and the only sophomorees that would be
with the varsity would be guys that started and it
was that sort of sort of the same philosophy of
I've got to get guys to play.
Speaker 6 (35:57):
And you know, if you.
Speaker 5 (35:59):
Look at it, a lot of times right after a merger,
our program will have a lot of success, and it's
because they're putting together two teams where kids have been playing.
And that's why you've got to get them to play.
If they'll play, they're not going to get better. They
got to play. And I tell you what I got.
I'll have some kids sometimes don't want to play JV.
(36:19):
And I'm like, I like, you're missing out on a
chance to get better. And you know what if that
freshman who's playing passes you up, don't come crying to me.
Speaker 6 (36:30):
I'm not I don't want to hear it.
Speaker 2 (36:31):
Yeah, well, Boyle.
Speaker 3 (36:33):
When I was at Boyle, we had you know, our numbers,
you know, weren't you know they weren't. I'm probably we
carried about maybe fifty five sixty kids. But what I
would do is my freshman I'd usually have you know,
twenty twenty five of those, and then I would use
take some of the sophomores that were younger in age
(36:55):
that wasn't ready to be varsity players. I would let
them go with the freshmen and they would practice. Freshmen
and sophomores would practice together. That's what I called my
JV team, and uh, they would go play the games.
We would play JV games with freshmen and sophomores, and
very few juniors would be brought down. Most of the
(37:17):
juniors were playing varsity or in the rotation. And then
and then if we ever had a chance to have
a freshman game, we would let those freshmen play before
that freshman sophomore game.
Speaker 2 (37:28):
And we had a league.
Speaker 3 (37:29):
You know, we organized the league and play the league
like that in the area. And it worked really well
for us. And uh, you know, but again I didn't
have you know, six A numbers or you know five
A numbers either for that matter, to uh have that
many kids to where I had to worry about, you know,
having a separate freshman team and the separate JV team and.
Speaker 2 (37:51):
So forth and so on. But it worked well for
me the way I did it.
Speaker 3 (37:55):
But again, like I said, I was I was not
a you know, a I didn't have great numbers.
Speaker 5 (38:02):
Yeah, I got you, And I, like I said, it's
hard work that I think if you want to build
a program, you got to.
Speaker 6 (38:07):
Play as many of those games as possible.
Speaker 5 (38:09):
And I like the two separate how we do the
six minute quarters because as much as I can, I
want freshmen to play freshman and I want the older
kids to play older kids.
Speaker 6 (38:19):
I just think that's a much better way to do.
Speaker 3 (38:21):
Yeah, yeah, David, Let's go on to our games of
the week if you want.
Speaker 2 (38:26):
And we got two really good rival games.
Speaker 3 (38:29):
You got and Russell and we got Deechwood and Covington Catholic.
Speaker 2 (38:34):
And our first game is Alan and Russell. If you
want to, I'll go first.
Speaker 6 (38:38):
You go first, go ahead, and I.
Speaker 3 (38:40):
Have Ashland and uh Aceland's hit football coach is a
Chad Tocket. He's currently two and two. Ashland is a
is a really good football program. It's it's uh, you know, historic,
It's got a lot of tradition to it. David Asceland
has won nineteen of twenty one games, the last twenty
(39:03):
one games against Russell.
Speaker 2 (39:05):
I mean, I didn't realize that it was that much.
They had dominated that much.
Speaker 6 (39:12):
I didn't either.
Speaker 5 (39:13):
I didn't, you know, when I was at Mason and
we played Russell. Yeah, when I was at Mason we
played Russell, it was a lot, it was a lot
more even back then.
Speaker 6 (39:21):
Yeah, that got me off guard too.
Speaker 2 (39:23):
Yeah, Russell has got a good tradition.
Speaker 5 (39:26):
Behind him, they really do. And TJ's TJ's getting them
back there.
Speaker 6 (39:30):
He really is.
Speaker 3 (39:31):
And And to lose a night, you know, nineteen out
of the last twenty one games, uh, and Acehlin has
one nineteen out of the last twenty one. Russell's lost
the last nineteen out of twenty one. That's complete domination now,
that really is.
Speaker 2 (39:44):
And Yeah, Ashley's got another pretty nice football team. They got.
Speaker 3 (39:49):
Their quarterback is Justin Justin Hughes. In one of his games,
maybe his last game, he was eight of eight, so
he's pretty accurate throwing the football for one hundred and
thirty nine yards and two touchdowns. They're running back Cameron
Davis went twenty seven Russias for one hundred and seventy
seven yards and two touchdowns. The receiving court and they
(40:10):
are a running football team, but the receiving corps is
kind of anchored by Cameron Davis and Mason Wolf. They
are a running football team and they've traditionally been a
physical football team. Smash Mouth tap a football team. Actually,
it'll be hard to beat. They haven't won nineteen out
of twenty one in this rivalry as an accident. Now
(40:34):
they won it because they're a good football team and
a good football program and really physical. If you're asking
me who I pick, I'm picking Ashland. If you won
nineteen out of twenty one, you've got something going on.
Speaker 6 (40:45):
Yeah, they have.
Speaker 5 (40:46):
They've done a great job, and I do. I've got
Russell TJ. Maynard as a head coach and they are
four and oer right now. And TJ played at Russell
and then he played at the University of Kentucky. Uh so,
but his quarterback is Jaden Fraser. He's averaging one hundred
and seventy one yards passing. He's got nine touchdowns, zero interceptions.
(41:11):
Caden and Jaden Pennington are leading the team in receiving.
Wyatt Hudson leads the team in tackles. Uh I know,
I know that, I know how it's gone as far
as recently and so forth. I I gotta feeling the
Red Devils are gonna do it. I think I think
Russell will get them this time. And I think they're
both good teams. I just think Russell's really on the uptick.
(41:34):
And I think they got the skill with Fraser and
Pennington and those guys.
Speaker 6 (41:38):
I think they're gonna be Okay.
Speaker 2 (41:40):
What's their current record right now, Russell?
Speaker 5 (41:42):
They're four and oh yeah yeah, And you know TJ.
I'm used to Ivan McGlone and the two tight end
wing tea. I think you know TJ. Spreading it out,
throwing it. It's not it's not the old Ivan McLoone anymore.
And I got a little story on.
Speaker 6 (41:59):
That tough time. I said diving.
Speaker 5 (42:01):
I said, if I paid you one thousand dollars, would
just split it in because that really helped me play defense.
Speaker 3 (42:06):
He said, that's that's awesome. That's Beechwood and coming to Katholic. Whoa,
this is going to be a bar and murder in
north of Kentucky.
Speaker 6 (42:15):
What do you yeah, it's sure will.
Speaker 5 (42:19):
Let me go first, all right, Okay, So I've got
Covenant Kathlic Eddie Evston is their head coach. I've got
a little story on Eddie. I applied for the Cuff
Caf job. Man, I wanted that job. So Jeffrees calls me.
He says, David, he said, are you would you be
interested to being the od C at Georgetown. I'm like, ah,
(42:42):
I said, I don't really do their stuff, and I said,
I appreciate the call.
Speaker 6 (42:46):
I ain't up to the phone. I start thinking.
Speaker 5 (42:48):
Now, wait a second, Eddie's from Newcast Tony Bakerloopos from
They say, I know, man Eddie got the Cuff CAF job,
and he's done a great job. They made a great hire.
Now the record is two and two, but listen to
their two losses, Ryle and Elder those are two great teams.
I mean, Ryle will have a chance to win six
(43:10):
to eight. They're really good. They're led by Cash Harney
at quarterback. He's averaging over two hundred and fifty yards
of offense both passing and throwing. Cash Buyers leads the
team in tackles. I think beach Woods really good. But
I'm on the Cupcast bandwagon to night.
Speaker 2 (43:29):
Yeah, well I've got beach Wood and I tell you
what day. North of Kentucky is really really good at
football this year.
Speaker 3 (43:36):
I don't know if they've been this good as a
whole in some time, but I mean they've got four
or five teams that are legit contenders. That can really
really pull off state championship. You know, they used to
be like that all the time, but.
Speaker 2 (43:52):
They kind of had a prop.
Speaker 5 (43:54):
When I was at Paris, they were killing it and
you know what, we could beat them all except for Beachwood.
We've never got Beachwood. We can get New calf Dayton
and Bellevue. But man, they play some really really good
football in northern Kentucky. I think it's I think it's
a great area for football.
Speaker 6 (44:13):
I really do.
Speaker 2 (44:14):
Well.
Speaker 3 (44:15):
I have Beachwood. They're head football coaches Jay Walker. He's
just I think he's in his second year maybe in anyway,
they're currently three and oh they're coming off of a
state championship year. I don't think they lost a game
last year. If I might be wrong on that, I
don't want to say that, but they were really good.
Obviously went in the state championship. They are All of
(44:39):
their free wins this year has been with running a
running clock, So that's how good they are.
Speaker 2 (44:45):
But listen to this stat, David. This that will really
get you.
Speaker 3 (44:48):
They have lost eighteen out of twenty the last twenty
times twenty one times they played against cub CAF, they've
lost eighteen of twenty one.
Speaker 2 (44:57):
Is that kind of surprise.
Speaker 6 (44:58):
You out now, does it? Because Hey, because here's the
thing the program.
Speaker 5 (45:06):
But when we had coach Volker on our show after
they won their state title, he said the cuve Cast
game is the one that put him over the type
because they beat him.
Speaker 6 (45:17):
Yeah, because he said they had to learn from it.
Speaker 5 (45:19):
So I'm not surprised because I think cuve Cast's really
really good too.
Speaker 6 (45:24):
But I think they're two great programs. I just think
one's big school, one small school.
Speaker 3 (45:31):
Now well coming to Catholic, as I said, has dominated
this series. Beachwood's got a nice quarterback, Queen Ally. He
was twenty of twenty five for two hundred and thirty
seven yards and four touchdowns in his last game.
Speaker 5 (45:47):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (45:48):
The running back and the receiver.
Speaker 3 (45:50):
The running back and receiver are all the you know
they're they're all the segments the Rinker by Tyler Friman,
Nathan Papps and Bratty Hour and Beachwood.
Speaker 6 (46:02):
Look.
Speaker 3 (46:02):
I think they look really strong this year. I think
they look stronger than normal. I don't know who's going
to beat them in two A. I think they're going
to repeat a state champs. They're just really, really good
this year. And I think they I know they've lost
eighteen out of the last twenty one, but this is
the year to turn this thing around. I'm picking Beachwood
over Cuff Catholic in this game.
Speaker 2 (46:23):
I think they're that good this year.
Speaker 6 (46:25):
Well, I sure wouldn't argue with you.
Speaker 5 (46:28):
And you know, here's the thing about it, Ashlyn Russell
Beach with cup Cat, you're talking about four good programs
and well coached. And yeah, I won't be surprised if
I look at the scores Friday night in Beachwood one
not at all.
Speaker 2 (46:44):
Oh, so you are on that fence again, you're not U.
Speaker 6 (46:46):
Still, I have to have to be because I have
to have to give you.
Speaker 5 (46:50):
I have to I have to be because I want
to give you something to talk about. So but now
I just it's better for me to pick because we
picked good games.
Speaker 2 (46:59):
Yeah, you feel bad.
Speaker 3 (47:00):
Now you're going to get ready to feel bad because
I'm talking about the rapid fire last week. Last week, David,
you were seven of fen, not bad, seven of ten.
Speaker 2 (47:11):
Hey, Chuck here was nine of ten in his picks.
Speaker 3 (47:16):
Hey, and he was the one who went out on
the limb and picked north Oldham over Southold them when
nobody else in the entire state was picking Northold them
to beat south of them because Southold was such a

Speaker 6 (54:31):
Yep.
Speaker 10 (54:31):
It was November seventeenth, nineteen fifty five, a three alarm
fire broke out in the three story apartment building on
James Street in Sarrahcuse, New York. The fire broke out
in the cellar and someone started going door to door
to tell the residents to evacuate. When they reached the
third floor, they knocked on the door where Jim and
(54:53):
his wife lived. The twenty four year old Jim rushed
out immediately and went to the second floor, where the
sma oak was the most dense. There, Jim found a
twenty month old in one of the apartments. He grabbed
little Diane Campbell and led her and her mother to safety.
He then went back in through the smoke to the
(55:13):
third floor and led his wife out of the burning building.
Jim was forever a hero to the Campbell family. Not
only did Jim become a hero on that faithful night
in nineteen fifty five to the Campbell family, but just
a few months earlier, Jim had became a hero for
(55:34):
the ages. This has forgotten heroes. I'm your host, Mack Yoakum,
and I have a story to tell you. Jim was
Jim Tucker, and he starred on the basketball court at
Paris Western High School in Paris, Kentucky. Paris Western was
the school for African American students in the community until
(55:57):
it closed in nineteen sixty four. As a junior, Jim
led Paris Western to a fourth place finish in the
KHSAL State Tournament. In nineteen fifty three, two years after
Jim graduated, Paris Western won the National Negro High School Championship.
Jim was six foot seven and very talented. Legendary University
(56:22):
of Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp called Jim one of the
best players he had ever seen. But with Jim Crow
laws and segregation firmly entrenched in the South, Rup knew
he couldn't recruit Jim, but Rup called his friend, coach
Chick Davies at du Cane University. At du Cane, Jim
(56:46):
Tucker led the team to three National Invitational tournaments and
he became a two time All American. He was taken
in the third round of the NBA Draft in nineteen
fifty four with the fourth pick by the Syracuse Nationals,
and incidentally, the number one pick in that draft was
(57:07):
former Corbyn Redhound star Frank Selvy. Jim became a vital
role player for the Nationals. There were few African American
players in the NBA in that era, but Jim had
a mentor on the Nationals and Earl Lloyd, who had
been the first African American to play in an NBA game.
(57:28):
Just four years earlier, Jim Tucker on February twentieth, nineteen
fifty five, set an NBA record, recording the fastest triple
double in league history. It only took him seventeen minutes,
a record that stood until twenty eighteen. Jim Tucker and
(57:51):
Earl Lloyd also established a record that can never be broken.
The rookie Jim Tucker and Earl Lloyd were the first
African Americans to win an NBA title. After his playing days,
Jim Tucker went to the Harvard Business School and became
an executive with the Pillsbury Company. In twenty nineteen, he
(58:15):
was the subject of an Emmy Award winning documentary called
let Him Know You're There, The Story of Big Jim
and the Triple Double. In the documentary, Jim said, quote,
it was more than just a game. It was something
else for Earle and me because for the first time
we had done something that had never been done black players,
(58:39):
winning an NBA championship. I can't remember what it felt like,
except that you had arrived at a station in life
that you never thought you would ever be a part of.
Earle said, to me. Remember there's only two of us,
and there are people who are hoping that we both fail.
(59:00):
And I'm not going to let you fail. Your turn
will come, Your time will come. End quote Jim Tucker,
one of Kentucky's great African American stars from another era
and our forgotten hero. This episode of Forgotten Heroes was
(59:21):
inspired by the book Shadows of the Past by former
KHSA commissioner the late Lewis Stout. Join us next time
for another episode of Forgotten Heroes.
