Speaker 1 (00:10):
Coach David Buchanan coach Chuck Smith, two legendary high school
football coaches. This is the Coach's Office, a behind the

(00:33):
scenes look at Kentucky high school football.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Welcome to the Coach's Office, behind the scenes with Truck
Smith and David Buchanan. This is season four, Episode ten.
We're ten weeks into the There's only two regular season games.
I think this is Johnny's last game. So if some
guys are finished in this week and then some guys
have got two weeks left, but it's flying by us

(01:02):
my point.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
I'm Tuck Smith.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
I'm joined by co hosts David Buchanan, podcast editor, Slash
storyteller Mike yoakam you. Our YouTube version of this podcast
is at teacock T dot C, dot O dot P.
If you hit like and subscribe that helps us out.
We'd appreciate that. Hey, we have a we have another

(01:25):
rival game show tonight. We've had a lot of success
with those, uh you know, we like to hear those.
They like to have both coaches on our two coaches tonight,
we were generous enough to take the time out. They
got a big game this week, and I know they'll
want to prepare for that, so we won't keep them
too long. But we have uh South Laurel and North

(01:47):
Laurel the Battle of Laurel County this week, but it
has also a little more added because it is a
district game. We got the veteran experience successful Johnny Hines
at South Laurel High School as he travels with his
team across town to North Laurel with the up and
coming young Steven Nelson. Both these coaches are in their

(02:11):
second year as head coaches at these particular schools. We'll
talk a little bit more about them in just a second.
Our tough topy tonight. Another good question from Bluegrass Preps.
It's a tough or easy district game? How do you
prep your team? Well, I mean we could have asked
these guys, well we got in one because they're prepping

(02:33):
for a tough district game. But they now talk a
little bit about that here in just a second. Our
games of the week this week are Owinsboro and Madisonville
and KCD and Campbellsville, two really good football games.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
I'll talk a little bit about each coach before we
bring them one.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
First, we got Johnny Hines, he's the head football coach
at South Laurel High School. He's currently got his team
at eight and one, okay, and he's going into his
last game of the season. This is his second season
at South Laurel. In twenty twenty four, he had a
six and four record, had to seam at six and four,
and he also won this rivalry game.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
This will be a second year in this.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
Rival game, but he won it last year against North
Laurel twenty four to seven. Johnny's got a long history
of success. I won't be able to get everything. I'll
get the highlights. He state championship. He made his mark
in Pulaski County. He won the twenty fourteen state championship.
He was runner up in thirteen, fifteen, and sixteen. Over

(03:38):
that four year period, he led Pulaski County to a
fifty two and eight record.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
That is really really good. That's tremendous.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
And along the way he won multiple Coach of the
Year awards during especially during that span. He spent twenty
five years at Pulaski County building that program. UH and
then he pull Prior to Plasti County, he spent four
years at Barron County.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
UH.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
He's one of the winningest and.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Most respected high school football coaches in all of Kentucky.
Now on the other side of the field this Friday
Night is going to be Steven Nelson and he's the
head football coach of North Laurel High School. He's currently
got his team at six and two man. This ought
to be a good football game.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
He's in this.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
He's also in his second season at North Laurel and
h his twenty twenty fourteen was five and seven his
first year there.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
He came to North Laurel.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
From rock Castle County, where he was the offensive coordinator
there at Rockcastle. He graduated at North Laurel High School.
He was a star player there, made the allstate team.
Uh so he was you know, he's got a lot
invested in in North Laurel, being you know, a former
player there.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
He has He's already got some signature wins at North Laurel.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
Last year his opening game he beat Bell County, which
Bell County everybody knows that Kentucky is the Firehouse.

Speaker 3 (05:09):
He won that game in his opening game. And then
this year he's already beat.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
Madison Central, who's considered a pretty strong today good in
six A.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
So he got two big impressive wins so far this year. Now.
Since nineteen ninety eight, okay, twenty nine.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
Years of this rival game, South Wawll has won twelve
times and north Wall has won seventeen times. So North
Wawrell leads with an edge in this game. But it
doesn't matter if these two coaches are going after each
other for the second year in the row. David, you
want to bring them on.

Speaker 5 (05:45):
Yeah, we're really excited to have you guys. And a
little side note about each of them. You know, Johnny,
this is sort of behind the scenes thing. Johnny taught
me to play in a really good team one time,
and so he talks me into it. We schedule him
and we're getting ready to pin, like, Johnny, what, why.

Speaker 4 (06:04):
Did I listen to you? That was a mistake. And
then it.

Speaker 5 (06:07):
Turned out we won, and I don't know how we won,
we won. And then after that then he calls me up.
He said, all right, now we're gonna beat him, and
I'm like, all right, come on. And then hey, coach Nelson,
you guys really made me look good last November because
Chuck and I were picking first round games and I said,

(06:27):
there is one four seed that will beat a one seed,
and I said North Laurel is going to win in
the first round, and you guys won And I knew
you had you a ball club.

Speaker 4 (06:38):
I really did.

Speaker 5 (06:38):
So these are two excellent football coaches and I love
I love London and Laurel County. So I'm really guys,
thank you all for being on our show. We're very
thankful to have you.

Speaker 6 (06:50):
Pleasure.

Speaker 3 (06:51):
Yep, Hey, guys, I'll get it started right here.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
I'll just ask the question and each of you can
it can take a shot and answered that, Uh, you know, what,
what's the energy like.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
On campus this week?

Speaker 2 (07:02):
With with a big crosstown rival game that you know,
you know how electric?

Speaker 3 (07:06):
Do you expect the game that you you had it
last year?

Speaker 2 (07:09):
So you have an idea of what the the the uh,
you know, environment's going to be like on Friday night. Uh,
it's got some added pressure to it being a district game.
Is there any kind of special tradition that your school
does for this game? What do you think, Steven?

Speaker 3 (07:24):
You want to go first?

Speaker 6 (07:26):
Yeah, I'll go first. That's what I was working on.

Speaker 7 (07:28):
So it's my second year here, as you will said,
I'm from North Thorol, so I know what it's like
to play South and coach Hines knows. I mean, he's
coming from Pulaski. They had the big rival with Southwestern
all his time there, and uh, you know, last year
was my first year. We went through some things, big
learning experience, and uh you know, they caught us at
the right time. They were well, well prepared. They outplayed us,

(07:50):
out coached us. There's nothing else to it. And that's
what I told the kids. So, uh, you know, the
energy is good. We're just coming off of a bad loss.
They're coming off of a big when and uh you know,
just you know how High goes battling through some injuries
and some adversity, and fuck, we're finally getting things straightened out.
And the kids know what's at stake and not only

(08:11):
the fourth versus South orl and it's a big rivalry game,
but this is huge playoff seating and it's two good
football teams that are going to play Friday night, and
everybody in Lawyl County's going to be there to watch it.
Everybody knows how fast and well coached health is. And
I like to think that people know that we're pretty
good too, and we've done a good job this year

(08:33):
getting the six and two, and we've played a tough
schedule and I'm proud of the kids, but you get
banged up in that and it's just preparing every single day,
you know.

Speaker 6 (08:42):
I know they're preparing over there. They're well coached.

Speaker 7 (08:44):
And a guy coach with PJ Warren from rock Castle
actually called the offense. I had to say that I was.
I helped him out a lot, so I know how
good a coach he is. I know Evan Aape, You're
all them guys are great coaches, and I know that
they're teaching their kids the same thing we're teaching our kids.
You know, you can't lose the football game. This is
a rivalry game. You get to walk around town with
your head held high for the next year. If you

(09:05):
lose like we did last year, you got to walk
around with your head held down down and you get
to look at your buddies across town and they get
to say, well, look we beat you, we beat you
or better than you. So that's kind of what's at stake,
and just preparing, understanding how important a football game this
is and having a good week of practices.

Speaker 6 (09:24):
Uh, that's a necessity for this football game.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
Yeah, do you all do did your scool do anything
uh special for this game?

Speaker 3 (09:32):
You'll have a pep rally or anything like that.

Speaker 7 (09:34):
I'm a very superstitious individual. I don't like pep rallies.
We had on we had one Friday and then the
coach and stuff went too happy and we come out
and play very good. So I said, no pep rallies.

Speaker 6 (09:47):
But uh, they know.

Speaker 7 (09:50):
I mean, there's nothing really special we do for just
preparing and like uh, I said, it's just it's the
rivalry game. Everybody in town knows about it's going about this.
But you you need to treat every game the same.
We say, let's go one and oh every single week.
And this is a big time game and it's hard
to take emotions out of it, but you have to
take your emotions out of it. And you have to

(10:11):
prepare and play football the way you've been taught, the
way we teach, and make sure that you're making fewer
mistakes than your opponent win the game. And you're playing
this one football and I know that's how they teach too,
And it's I think it's just too well coached good
football teams, and you know, I think it can be
anybody's football game. It's who prepares mentally and physically this week.

Speaker 3 (10:33):
What do you think, Johnny?

Speaker 8 (10:35):
Well, Hey, first of all, I appreciate being on the show, guys.
I always enjoy listening to the podcast. You guys have
done a great job at this show over the years.
And appreciate coach Nelson and the kind words North Lawrel's
a very very good football team is the first thing
that comes to my mind. But as far as special traditions,
we'll have a pepper rally. It is one thing that

(10:56):
we'll do. It's a rivalry game, you know, and all
coaches say the same things about the rivalry opponent and
it's true, and that is that's the game of the year.
It really is. You know, you hear the old adage
that you can win them all and lose to the
rival school and it's been a bad year. Or you
can lose them all and win the rivalry game and

(11:18):
it's a good year. And that's the way it is.
It really is. The people in Laurel County are very
good sports people. They're excited about their sports teams and they'll.

Speaker 4 (11:29):
Tell you can walk down.

Speaker 8 (11:31):
The streets of London and grab anybody and ask them
who they're a fan of, and they'll let you know
real quick whether it's Walker's South and no bones about it,
and it'll be a huge crowd, it'll be it'll be
an electric night, and it'll be an electric week. And
you know what coach Nelson said is right. I believe
the hardest thing to do. I've always felt like on

(11:51):
Rivalry week is just to keep the kids calmed down
and be able to focus on what you try and
do in practice and just have a typical week of practice. Uh,
even though it's not a typical week. And then uh,
you know it's it's gonna be a it's gonna be
a wild and crazy game. We we we know we've
got to play extremely well to have a chance.

Speaker 3 (12:11):
Well, all right, go ahead, Johnny.

Speaker 2 (12:14):
You both I know you both preach because I know
you and I don't know seem but I bet that
the type of player he was, that you both believe
in physical play with a will the most physical team
win this game.

Speaker 8 (12:27):
Well, I think without a doubt that that's that's gonna
be huge. I don't think there's any way you're gonna
have a chance to win if you're not the most
physical football team. And uh and that's what makes rivalry
going so great, you know, you guys know that. And
in North it's a big, strong, physical football team. They
like to run the ball and control the clock and
and and play that style. And so uh uh, you know,

(12:49):
we we've got to rise to that level of physicality
if we're gonna have any kind of chance.

Speaker 4 (12:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (12:56):
He Before I get into my question, I just really
want to say to both of you and I really
appreciate the level of respect you have for each other
and for each other's programs, and.

Speaker 4 (13:09):
I just love that.

Speaker 5 (13:10):
I don't know that I see a whole lot of
that anymore, And just thank you for setting a great
example for all of us as coaches. Ay, my question
is being such a big rivalry game in your community,
does this change how you prepare for this week compared
to your other nine opponents because it is of this magnitude. Johnny,

(13:30):
I'll let you go first on this one.

Speaker 8 (13:32):
Well, you know, we would like to say no, like
coach Nelson said, and you try to prepare for the
same way each and every week. But the sad truth
is the art you do prepare a little different because
it is the rivalry game. I think as coaches, we're
all aintal in the way that we leave no stone

(13:54):
unturned and watch that film one more time and all
that kind of stuff, and it really gets back to
fide on rivalry. You know, you just don't sleep. You're
in the film as much as you can and hope
you haven't left something out. Make sure you've covered every
possible base.

Speaker 4 (14:11):
I got you, what about you, Coach Nelson.

Speaker 7 (14:13):
Yeah, like Coach Han said, you know, it's a we
practiced today and like you said, I mean, there's no
shame about it.

Speaker 6 (14:20):
Are they be?

Speaker 7 (14:21):
Just last year pretty bad? So I made one of
my assistant coaches go through before we practice and put
on our new school board. Southall twenty four, Northall seven.

Speaker 6 (14:31):
Twenty twenty four.

Speaker 4 (14:33):
We get Johnny shaking his hand.

Speaker 7 (14:34):
Yeah, I tell you every day, Coach Han said, I'm like, listen,
they whooped you all.

Speaker 6 (14:41):
You all should be ashamed.

Speaker 7 (14:42):
I said, I said, I live close to South Orlo,
So I said, I have to drive by there, and
I said, I have to get sick thinking about.

Speaker 6 (14:48):
How they whoop my rear end and I gotta go home.
And so it's one of those things.

Speaker 7 (14:52):
And I appreciate what coach Han said about film because
I'm one of those guys. I'm watching films still at
six o'clock and we're getting ready to go out, Like,
let me make sure I didn't see and miss something
where we're going to this game or something I can
write down real quick and come back to. And uh, it's, uh,
you know, our kids know those guys.

Speaker 6 (15:09):
I mean they know them, They talk to them.

Speaker 7 (15:11):
They played sports against each other their whole life, and
their families know each other.

Speaker 6 (15:15):
Heck, they are family, most of them.

Speaker 7 (15:17):
And it's, uh, you got a you they certain name
dropping people about oh so and so here, so and
so there, and uh talking about kids at different positions.
They do know them, and it is more personal and
it's keeping uh you know, it's keeping emotions in check.
But it's you better have your best week of practice
you've ever had and uh, you'd better be focused on
the game in hand and uh getting a good night's sleep,

(15:38):
saying hydrated because you get one shot to play your rival,
like Coachy and said, it's rivalry rivalry week. You get
one shot at them, and if you lose, then that
you got to wait a whole other year. So that's
that's the thought, and uh, I think our kids are preparing.
You know, they're getting you win five games straight and coach,
and to this they they won seven straight.

Speaker 6 (15:58):
You win five six seven. Heart, that's the hard part
of our job because you start relying. I think nobody
can beat you.

Speaker 7 (16:05):
And uh, you know we took a butt whooping last
week headed into this game. And it's all right, South,
OK's gonna do the exact same thing to you if
you all don't prepare and come out with you to play,
he ordered.

Speaker 8 (16:20):
He is, I gotta, I gotta let you in on
one more though. We're playing that Welcome to the Jungle
song in the locker room before and after. It always
always something extra.

Speaker 4 (16:33):
Yeah, you man.

Speaker 5 (16:35):
You guys, you'all remind me of Blanton Collier. You know,
he practiced for Tennessee every day all season and I
think he's the only Kentucky coach with a winning record
against Tennessee. But he never stopped working on Tennessee. I
thought of that way you guys were talking. Go ahead, Chuck,
you got the mission.

Speaker 2 (16:52):
My last question here is is, uh, I've experienced I've
experienced this a little bit myself, but how much did
pressure is this game since not only is it a
rival game, but it's a district game and everybody knows that.
You know, if the winner is going to go on
the other side of that bracket than Pulastic County, who

(17:14):
is probably the favorite, you know, to win that region.
So if you go on the other side, then you
jockey for a different act to get into those into
that third round, and anything can happen once you get to.

Speaker 3 (17:27):
The third round.

Speaker 2 (17:28):
So what kind of added pressure is it because it
is a district game, is it or is it a
lot of pressure on you? Or is that something you
just throw off to the side and say, hey, you
know here it is.

Speaker 8 (17:41):
Well, honestly, I don't think. I don't think you can
add any pressure to the rivalry game.

Speaker 6 (17:47):
I really don't.

Speaker 8 (17:48):
I mean, you you know, you're right. It's for a
second place in the district, which is a big deal.
It gives you a home playoff game and puts you
in a better spot going into the playoffs. It's a
big game in town, you know, all those things that
we've already said. But as far as pressure, the bottom
line is it's the local people that want to win

(18:09):
the game. You know, there'll be people that'll come to
this game that don't come to any other game all
year long, and you know they want to win this one.
They really don't care about the rest of them. I
tell people all the time, and it's a true story.
They think I'm crazy. But way back in fourteen when
I was at Plaski and we won the state championship,
we lost in the regular season at Southwestern and then

(18:32):
beat them in the playoffs, and I tell everybody that
was a bigger win for the program than the final game.

Speaker 6 (18:38):
It really was.

Speaker 8 (18:39):
And it sounds ridiculous, but you know, when you've been
a part of these these crazy rivalry games.

Speaker 7 (18:45):
Yeah, yeah, Stephen, I just piggyback.

Speaker 6 (18:49):
Really what off? Coach Hunt said.

Speaker 7 (18:50):
I mean, there's been people asking me since probably our
first game about South Laurel.

Speaker 6 (18:56):
You know we're we going to be South South.

Speaker 7 (18:58):
Look like I said, well, lord, you play the football game.
I guess you got to come to guy. But uh,
that is a lot of people in this town. That's
really all they care about. So you know, it is
important for playoff scenes everything, but really what's important is
beating your rival, beating your.

Speaker 6 (19:13):
Family across town and brothers and but coach.

Speaker 7 (19:16):
And said, I know many people that have not come
to a football game this year that have already told me,
you have, we'll be there Friday night.

Speaker 6 (19:22):
We'll be there to watch you off. And that's the
way it goes.

Speaker 7 (19:25):
And that's what makes a rivalry so special is there
is so much emotion involved and there are so many
people that don't even know anything about football, and they're
gonna come watch just to see if the team in
blue and green are the team and red and black
are gonna win it that year. And uh, that's enough
added pressure for me. Listen, my eye, Coach Hans will
enjoy this. My little girl turns one next week and

(19:45):
my wife's scheduled her birthday this Saturday, her birthday party.
And I said, what in the world are you doing?
He said, I have with you. I said, if I
lose her, Daddy ain't gonna be there. He's will be
in the basement sulking. And so my wife has regret
us that.

Speaker 6 (19:59):
The and for ever. And I said that, adding even
more pressure.

Speaker 5 (20:06):
That's awesome, Coach, that's awesome. And that's Hey, that's what
it's like. That's what it's like. I mean, you're you're
so true or so right.

Speaker 4 (20:14):
Hey, guys, this is cool.

Speaker 5 (20:16):
Also for me, my dad was on the first football
team at London High School, so it's really neat having
the North and South Laurel coaches on this show. So
what is the best thing you guys could tell the
rest of the state about London and Laurel County People
that are listening, What would you wanted to know about
where you're coaching?

Speaker 4 (20:35):
And Coach Nelson, I'll get you you first on that.

Speaker 6 (20:40):
You know, I've been here my whole wife.

Speaker 7 (20:42):
I had someone I went to the barbershop today and
had a lady ask me where I was from, and
I told her here and London's really special Law County.

Speaker 6 (20:49):
It's a special place. Part I love it here.

Speaker 7 (20:52):
Me and my wife both graduated from North Laurel and
you know, I grew up here, played Little league sports
here against South Laurel, played with for all guys on
my teams my whole life. And you know, people really
do love sports here. It's not just that, but it's
a great community. Everybody's always willing to reach out and help.
And just like everybody saw with our tornadoes this past

(21:14):
spring and how many people spring into action to go
out and help their neighbor and.

Speaker 6 (21:18):
Love one another. That's what makes this community really special.
And I love it here.

Speaker 7 (21:23):
My family loves it here, and you know, we really
don't want to ever leave here. And I know most
of the county my whole life. And you know, it's
I've never had a bad thing to say about anybody
from here, because they do treat you well.

Speaker 6 (21:36):
They'll give you the shirt off. And uh, it's a.

Speaker 7 (21:39):
Great place, you know, anybody that's not from here, and
I recommend stopping by for a chicken festival weekend or
something just getting to meet somebody because it is a
great place.

Speaker 4 (21:50):
Awesome, good deal. What about you, Coachines, what would you say?

Speaker 8 (21:54):
And I would agree with everything Coach Nelson said. You know,
I'm kind of new to the community, but uh, I
do have some family that lived there. My wife has
some family that lived there and live in the Corbin area.
So it's not like we're we're new, uh in that way.
But it's a wonderful little town.

Speaker 6 (22:11):
It really is.

Speaker 8 (22:13):
It's just a great piece of Americana. You know, it's
a it's a it's a beautiful little town and in
the foothills of the mountains, and uh, everybody knows everybody,
Like coach Nelson said that most of the people there
have lived there all their life for generations and you know,
they'll give you the shirt off the back they think
you need it more than they do. And it's a
wonderful place. And as I said, it's a sports town.

(22:36):
They love their local sports, you know, the youth leagues
and in the middle school. Uh, in all sports and
high school teams. Man, they come out and they support
it and they're excited about it, and uh, it's just
a just a really neat place to be involved with
something like high school football.

Speaker 2 (22:52):
And guys, y'all are just exactly the perfect example of
what high school football coaches should be like.

Speaker 3 (22:59):
And Tucky, you guys fire me up to will amen
very well for each.

Speaker 2 (23:04):
Other, and you could tell you're pulling out all stops
to win this problem.

Speaker 3 (23:08):
I've been in those games. I did all that stuff too.

Speaker 2 (23:11):
I got all kinds of stories, and uh, it's it's
really awesome to listen to you two guys talk about
your teams and and this this Friday night. I bet
it's going to be something special there.

Speaker 6 (23:23):
Yeah, appreciate.

Speaker 7 (23:25):
I have all the respect in the world for coachnes,
I tell everybody I think. I said, back when I
was in high school, he coached at Plasky against me
and we could never.

Speaker 6 (23:32):
Dag and beat him.

Speaker 7 (23:33):
And I said, they have one of the best high
school coaches in the state of Kentucky.

Speaker 6 (23:37):
Me and my brother said it all the time.

Speaker 7 (23:39):
And I have nothing but respect for him, but dag
on and I don't want him to win this week.

Speaker 6 (23:45):
We gotta do something to beat him.

Speaker 7 (23:46):
And he's with They're a great team, he's a great coach.
They got a great staff over there, and our kids
know that because listen, before Coachin's got there, I'll give
him all shut out here. South All was really struggling,
you know. The Northork people thought we had finally got
rent of their football program. They're never going to come
back from this. And I was at Rockcastle and I
still lived here, and uh I remember the day they

(24:07):
announced they hired him. I said, oh man, I said,
North might be in trouble. Now they got a good coach.
And then about three months later I got the job
and I said, oh man, I might be in trouble.

Speaker 8 (24:18):
Well, I said, old man, when they hired you, because
I was hoping they'd bring a duddy in, you know,
but tried, no kid. And Coach Nelson's done a great
job to be you know, a young, inexperienced coach. He's
handled a very tough situation and he's done it with
with great poise. And uh and obviously, I mean they're
in the top ten, they're beating people there. They're a

(24:39):
good football program and he's done a great job and
it's exciting and you know, uh, we're I don't know,
I don't know what the game is going to be like.
We may have to run a trick play on every series.
There's no telling what's gonna happen. It'll be one of
those they'll talk about forever.

Speaker 3 (24:54):
I guess, Yeah, yeah we can.

Speaker 5 (25:00):
You guys are super Yeah, you guys were super Hey,
thank you, and hey, I I'd love.

Speaker 4 (25:07):
It if both of y'all could win.

Speaker 5 (25:08):
But if nothing else, both of you need to have
a blast Friday night, at least up until the final gun.

Speaker 4 (25:13):
You know what I'm.

Speaker 5 (25:14):
Saying, have a blast because what you're what you're getting
to do is really special and uh, whatever the outcome is,
I mean, you you've got four great days ahead of you,
soak it up.

Speaker 4 (25:25):
And enjoy every single bit of it.

Speaker 8 (25:28):
Well, thanks, guys, I sure appreciate you all and appreciate
being on the program. Appreciate you Coach and Nelson and
the kind words and uh it's it is exciting times
and it's always a lot of fun. The only bad
part about Rivalry Week is that one of the two
of us, like Coach said, is gonna be miserable on Saturday.
Other than that, Lafe's great.

Speaker 7 (25:47):
Yeah, I amen, I appreciate you guys and go Shine's
great job this year. I was going to tell you that,
and I appreciate you guys for having us on it
as a blast.

Speaker 4 (25:56):
Ye. Hey, you guys were s Thank you so much.

Speaker 6 (25:59):
Thank you.

Speaker 8 (25:59):
Thanks.

Speaker 3 (26:01):
And the question is.

Speaker 2 (26:07):
Tough or easy district game? How do you prep your team?

Speaker 4 (26:11):
Yeah, I thought it was a good question.

Speaker 5 (26:14):
I know it sounds cliche, but really what we try
to do is just every day we just try to
get better. It really doesn't matter a whole lot who
were playing, what the circumstances are. Every day is about
getting better. And I mean you do prepare for your opponent,
but the biggest opponent every day is you know for

(26:38):
for your opponent is you is are you going to
get better, You're gonna be lazy and soft and so forth.
Now we're in a tough spot right now. We got
to beat Friday night.

Speaker 4 (26:48):
It was tough.

Speaker 5 (26:49):
We're playing Woodford County, the number one team at five
a Friday night. They're in our district. They are really,
really good. We had a team meeting. We had a
team meeting Friday when we got off the bus, and
you know, Coach mccorter had a good thing. He said,
our guys need to think about, you know, why are
you playing and who are you playing for? And I
felt like that was something I needed to share with them,

(27:12):
and then I need to let them sort of work
that out and think that through.

Speaker 4 (27:17):
I like this.

Speaker 5 (27:17):
This goes back to the Tony Dungee's books, playing for
Chuck Knowle and goes back to like the big Colts
and Patriots, and you can read all about it, but
Chuck No and Tony Dunge you were really big on
It doesn't matter if it's the Super Bowl or if
it's a regular season game.

Speaker 4 (27:37):
We always prepare the best that we can.

Speaker 5 (27:39):
We have the same routine because if there's a better
routine for the super Bowl, well we should have done
it back in the regular season because we needed to
win them all, and I thought that.

Speaker 4 (27:50):
Was really good.

Speaker 5 (27:51):
I will say this, you know, with us having a
tough season right now, we're paying Woodford some of the
things that I think are important. I've talked to my
players and coaches about our standards and expectations are going
to stay the same. I said, really, if anything, each
day we still need to improve, so we really need
to raise the standard. Uh, but I don't want to

(28:13):
be as confrontational right now. You know, the standards a standard,
but you know, as a coach, you can really let
things get ugly, you can still hold them accountable and
maybe not have as to confrontation. You know, you might
just need to make a change in a position, say
so and so, Hey, you get that spot right now,
and that might be the best way to handle it.

(28:34):
I think a great staff is critical if you're a
big favorite or a big underdog, because there's a lot
of things going on that the head coach can't take
care of every single thing. And if you've got really
good assistant coaches, which I do, I think those guys
can really sort of help with that. You know what
I'm thinking about specifically about today. You know today, you know,

(28:55):
we do this on a Monday at Arizon a Thursday.
So here's something that's different. In the past daylight today,
I would have been thinking, hey, I hope it goes well.
Today it was a little bit different just because I'm old.
Now it's like, Okay, I know there's gonna be some
really tough spots today, and I've got to think through

(29:15):
how I'm gonna respond when those things happen instead of
just hope that it doesn't happen. So I don't know
if that helps or not, But the bottom line is
every day we get better, regardless who the opponent is.

Speaker 4 (29:27):
And I think that's a route to go and good.

Speaker 2 (29:31):
Good answer, David. You know it's very thorough. I appreciate
the answer.

Speaker 3 (29:36):
I'm similar.

Speaker 2 (29:38):
You know, it's a tough question for me because I
don't really take I don't take any game for granted,
nor do I overlook any team. That's just always that's
just how I was built. That's how I know. I
know that's I.

Speaker 3 (29:54):
Think the other day.

Speaker 2 (29:55):
You know, we treat them all the same, but they're
not all equal, and that's the truth. They're not are
better than others. And uh, there's they're a tough game.
How I would handle a tough game. This is the
way I always handle the tough games. You start preparing
way before that night.

Speaker 9 (30:12):
You know, you you've got to identify, you know, the
teams that are in your district, and you've got to
build your non district games to get ready for those
district games to beat those teams.

Speaker 2 (30:27):
You know, you've got to build your team to beat
the team you got to beat. That's you start from
the very beginning on that. It doesn't happen just on
game a night. It starts way before it starts in
spring practice. As a matter of fact, you know, it's
it's winning the winning the district game, uh, and hosting
a playoff game. That's the key, you know, to a

(30:50):
deep run in the playoffs. You've got a job for
the best route that you can get and winning those
district games and host uh district games, are hosting playoff games,
you know, makes that route a lot easier. You know
you if you don't, if you don't do it like that,

(31:11):
then you're going to always be struggling, always have a
tough road to go. You know, I say, the big games,
you start preparing and building your team to beat those
key district opponents. You know, I think, even starting spring
football practice, what do I have to do? How do
I have to what do I have to do to

(31:31):
beat this team? You know what's going to work? And
that's the way I do it, and and or that's
way I've always done it in my career and had
I had success.

Speaker 3 (31:40):
Doing it that way.

Speaker 2 (31:41):
Our big rival always was uh, not always, but the
last few years was Lexington Catholic. You know, we had
to be able to beat Lexington Catholic. We had to
beat our We had to build our team to do that.
They were going to throw the ball every down. They
always have a great quarterback, and we had to be
able to cover. And and so we started building a
team so we had cover guys.

Speaker 3 (32:01):
That's where the skill guys were going to go.

Speaker 2 (32:04):
And then we worked on pressures, you know, to be
able to pressure that quarterback. You know, that's what I
mean by building your team to beach history opponent.

Speaker 3 (32:14):
And it starts way before that week.

Speaker 2 (32:16):
Okay, the game, Well, uh, my mind doesn't work like that.

Speaker 3 (32:23):
I don't know what easy is. I don't work like that.
That's not how I'm built I don't know what an
easy game is. I don't.

Speaker 2 (32:30):
I don't believe in that. I think that when I
go into those games. But I also know that if
I'm a heavy favorite or not, and I think that,
you know, you focus on yourself, your own team. You know,
you id you're on a mission. You identify the things
that you haven't been doing well, and that's what you're
going to get better at that week. And I think

(32:51):
that's kind of what you were saying a little bit.
But you know, you're you're on a mission. You know,
you're you're you're headed, you're climbing this hill, you're going
in this direction. And if you take a dip down
and you took a week off, then you've you you've
thrown a wrench. In my opinion, I don't. I don't
believe in that. I don't work that way. And I
always knew from my own experience. You know, I've been

(33:14):
a part of seven state championships, uh two runners up,
and UH I know that that that if I if
I sold this philosophy and my kids bought into it,
you know, hey, these these weeks that were heavy favorites,
we got to work.

Speaker 3 (33:34):
On these things.

Speaker 2 (33:35):
These particular things to keep moving in the direction we
want to move in. And I knew that if I,
if I, if the kids bought into it. Uh, those
were the teams that had shocked to win a state championship.
If I had to go out there and fight them
every day, I knew I wasn't.

Speaker 3 (33:52):
Gonna win it.

Speaker 2 (33:53):
I know, I've never had I've never had a team
that I had to fight every day to work toward
that goal.

Speaker 3 (34:02):
Win a state championship.

Speaker 2 (34:03):
And I've had some teams that I thought were probably
good enough to do it, but I felt like they
they they lost it, you know during those off weeks
because they didn't buy into my philosophy. They didn't buy
into it, and it was something I had to beat
them and fight them every day.

Speaker 3 (34:18):
And it's really no fun either from a coaching stamp.

Speaker 2 (34:22):
You know, I knew that the ones that bought into it,
you know, that was just it's come to work every day,
we're going to focus on this particular thing.

Speaker 3 (34:31):
We're going to get better. You know.

Speaker 2 (34:32):
I've had nineteen you know that bought into that, and
I've had other teams that bought into it.

Speaker 3 (34:38):
They weren't good enough to win the state championship. I
had nine that bought but you know.

Speaker 2 (34:42):
One at seven times, but or part of seven. And
then the two that didn't win it, they didn't win
it because they didn't buy into it.

Speaker 3 (34:50):
They didn't win it because of the better team won.

Speaker 2 (34:52):
But my goal as a coach was always and this
is kind of weird, but I always thought that, uh
one of my goals as a coach is I wanted
the opposing team coach. I wanted one of the opposing
team coaches to say, uh man, your team is a machine.
I've always wanted to say, and I got it. I

(35:14):
got it two or three times during my career. I
didn't get it all the time. I got it two
or three times, but I always wanted him to say,
damn man, your team is like a machine. Just comes
out there. It's it's it's the same reaction, the same
fool speed on every single.

Speaker 3 (35:29):
Snap, you know. And uh yeah, I always thought that
was the ultimate compliment to get.

Speaker 5 (35:34):
You know, one thing I want to brag on you.
I thought this was great. Uh del Mueller fact. You know,
when you all were back in like two thousand and
three and all that, del Mueller said, uh man, when
you play Boyle Counties like playing eleven Marines, and he said,
we've got to become eleven Navy Seals.

Speaker 4 (35:54):
And I always thought that was really cool.

Speaker 5 (35:56):
At a great compliment, and I man, that was a
great answer. Or I tell you what, if a guy
wants to win a state championship in the last five
minutes of what you shared was absolutely wonderful, is excellent,
And man, I appreciate you sharing that level of wisdom
because that that was really good.

Speaker 4 (36:14):
And also like this too, you really gave a lot of.

Speaker 5 (36:18):
Ownership to the players and the leadership of the team
because you know you were I mean, I know you
through all that stretch. I mean, you've been a great
coach and your standards never slipped. But at the end
of the day, a lot of this it does end
up in the hands of the players and it sort

(36:38):
of becomes what, you know, what they want to.

Speaker 4 (36:41):
Make of it.

Speaker 5 (36:42):
And and I think you can't do leadership. And I
think there's I think there's two sides to that coin.
I think sometimes I think coaches will get unjust criticism
at times, and I think sometimes maybe coaches will get
too much credit. And you know what thing you know,

(37:03):
like when you look at some of the great teams
of the past, Lombardi's Packers, and then you know, I
got to be around a lot of Homer Goings as
guys at Paris after they'd won their state title, and
even my Dad's his really good Boil team.

Speaker 4 (37:18):
What you find out.

Speaker 5 (37:19):
Is those really good teams had really good men on
those teams. You know, they really were. And that's not
to take any thing away from Lombardi or homer Goings
or you, but you know, I don't I know you
don't want to get into singling people out, but I've
heard you talk about specific leaders in critical moments really

(37:42):
stepping up and making a big difference.

Speaker 4 (37:45):
And uh, I'm glad that.

Speaker 5 (37:47):
That piece is out there because I just think I
think it gets left out and I don't I think
it I don't think it's appreciated as it should be.

Speaker 4 (37:54):
So thanks for sharing that. It was good.

Speaker 3 (37:57):
I appreciate that.

Speaker 2 (37:58):
Hey, David, Let's move to the next segment, and that
is the games of the week, and I think we got.

Speaker 3 (38:03):
Two really good games. Absolutely is Owensboro and Madisonville North Hopkins.

Speaker 5 (38:10):
The yis for me to go first. I'll go first.
Chris Price is their head coach. They are led by
Mark They're seven and one. They are led by Marquez
high Tower, who's already got thirteen hundred yards rushing one
hundred and sixty six average per game. One of the
best players in Kentucky high school football right now. He's

(38:31):
he's very very good. Alex Richards is their quarterback. He's
already got over one thousand yards passing not they played
eight games. Their top receiver is Writers Sandage. Of their
defenses led by Kirk la Grange, Trayon Stafford Ryders Sandage,
who's also the good receiver, and Bryceon's Shoulders and then

(38:54):
Lagrange and Shoulders also have three interceptions.

Speaker 4 (38:56):
So those are some of their leaders.

Speaker 5 (38:59):
And I'll let you talk about Owensboro before we start
picking a winner.

Speaker 3 (39:03):
Yeah. Yeah, and Olisboro's got a really nice team.

Speaker 4 (39:06):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (39:06):
They're head football coaches in his first year.

Speaker 1 (39:10):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (39:11):
His name is DeMarcus Gainaway and uh, he currently has
his team at six and two. They lost their first
two games of the season, but pretty good competition to
Saint X and a lot of people have lost the
Saint X and col this year. Yeah, he rilled off
six straight wins. Uh, you really got them going. They're
really playing good football right now. Their scores are really lopsided.

(39:34):
The quarterback obviously is his son because his name is
DeMarcus Gainaway Junior, and he's had put up some impressive
numbers hisself. He's pretty efficient with his passing UH based
upon his stats. The receiver for him is this shows
up a lot on the status sheet is Kingston Villard uh.

Speaker 3 (39:57):
And he's he's just a sophomore. UH.

Speaker 2 (40:00):
The guy that he's the main guy, the guy coming
up is Evan Hampton. He is the running back. He
is the real deal. He's the leading rusher. He is
in all of the mister football conversations because he deserves
to be in. I've coached against him, and I've seen

(40:21):
him on film, and I've had scrimmage against him. He
is the real deal. He is very, very good. He's
so fast, he's so explosive. He reads his block really well.
I mean, he's just a handful to take down, and
he's got the speed to break away from you. He's
got several, many, many offers. I couldn't even name them all,

(40:43):
but they're all deserving.

Speaker 3 (40:45):
This guy.

Speaker 2 (40:45):
This guy's really good and he should be in the
mister football conversation. Everything they do is going to revolve
around him. If he was on my team, he would
run the ball forty.

Speaker 3 (40:57):
Times a game at all.

Speaker 2 (41:00):
I mean, he's he's that, he's good and he would
didn't be hard to beat.

Speaker 3 (41:05):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (41:06):
In defense, He's got a Quinn brother, uh that plays
on the defensive side, elizahell Hampton. Uh and he he
shows up a lot on the status sheets as well
as uh tyd Ashley. Uh. As far as far as
the series goes, you know, one Borough is pretty much
dominated the series. But but Madisonville has won.

Speaker 6 (41:28):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (41:28):
I think two years ago there in the scores have
been tightrant tighter, So they're closing some ground on the
ones Borough.

Speaker 3 (41:35):
But hey, uh and I know they got a good
running back too.

Speaker 2 (41:38):
But uh, I cannot bet against this Evan Hampton guy.

Speaker 3 (41:42):
I think he's gonna take them all the way.

Speaker 4 (41:45):
I gotcha.

Speaker 5 (41:46):
I'm inclined to agree with you. I would pick Owensborough.

Speaker 1 (41:49):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (41:50):
I think High Tower's really good.

Speaker 5 (41:52):
And uh I, whenever I see Madisonville, I think a
Suddy Collins. Yeah, he was a all a gray players
Sunny College College. Me sort of the Madisonville guy to me, Hey,
which reminds me a little side note. We're playing Dennis
Johnson Woodford this week. I was telling Alvis the story

(42:14):
about I put out there about my dad talking about
how to stop O. J.

Speaker 4 (42:17):
Simpson in the Rose Bowl. My dad call Ohio State.

Speaker 5 (42:21):
So anyway, Coach Johnson told me he was the DC
I think at Christian County. Yeah, he told that. He
told the head coach. He said, coach, I can stop
Sunny College. And he said Sunny Collins ran all over them.
He said it was not a good It was not
a good time to see the head coach afterwards. But

(42:42):
I always think of Sunny Collins and Madisonville. Hey, our
next one, we got Kentucky Country Day and Campbellsville.

Speaker 4 (42:49):
So hey, I'll let you go first on this one.

Speaker 2 (42:51):
Okay, I got Campbellsville and they're head football coaches now
as sins that he done a great job there. He
really has. He's got a rolling They've been very compared
over the last several years there. They're been competing for, uh,
you know, really a chance to play for the state championship.

Speaker 3 (43:07):
He's currently got him seven to one.

Speaker 5 (43:10):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (43:10):
He lost the opening game to Bell County. I think
it was a tight game if I remember correctly, but
he hasn't lost since he's got.

Speaker 5 (43:17):
Him on a row.

Speaker 3 (43:18):
His quarterback is uh case Uh yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2 (43:24):
And uh he is a dual threat kind of guy.
He can run it and throw it. Uh seems to
be their key player. The running back position is held
down by Jalen Imbury and uh stayed in Calhoun. And
then the receiving position uh that shows up a lot
in the stat sheets is Gabriel Novola and now k

(43:48):
C d leaves this series. They have dominated the series.
They leaded eight to two out of ten games. They
won eighty percent of the time.

Speaker 3 (43:55):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (43:56):
It's been a close game recently, though it's in the
last few years of in a close game. I tell
you what I'm gonna go, don't I don't know. I
know case D's having a great year. They are. They're
having a really great year. Probably one of the favorites
to win the state championship. But you know what, they
might not win their district championship because I'm going with Campbellville.

(44:18):
And I tell you what, dil was taking over for
the you know the great Perry Thomas that was there.
And yes, if I'm Dell I wouldn't be a bit
surprised to see Perry Thomas in the stands this week.

Speaker 3 (44:30):
Help.

Speaker 2 (44:30):
I would even let him come in and talk to
my team and motivate. A great motivator, and he would
have those guys fired up ready to go.

Speaker 5 (44:38):
Hey, I coached against Perry Thomas when they were the
number one Class A team in the state in nineteen
ninety three. Hey, they gave our Paris team a butt whooping.
It was bad, guys, she was bad Perry. Perry Thomas
could flat out coach some football.

Speaker 4 (44:55):
Now, he's a good one.

Speaker 5 (44:57):
And I've got case to either head coaches Max Owns.
They are eight to er. Now, Hey, you know I've
worked with both these quarterbacks, Case and the quarterback at KCD,
Cayden Long. I've got a chance where they're both super
young men, super quarterbacks.

Speaker 4 (45:16):
Ed Long is an old Mercer County guy. He the DC.
Ed Son is Cayden Long. Who's the quarterback? So I
mean I talk to Ed. I don't know we talked.

Speaker 5 (45:26):
I talk every two or three months, but love to
talk all things Mercer County and Larry French and Jack
Robertson and all those things. So Hayden is even though
Kay Long they're running the triple option. He's got over
five hundred yards passing. They are a senior dominated team,
so I think that gives them a bit of an edge. Uh.

(45:47):
Parker Rudolph leads the running attack defensively. Of their top
four tack leading tacklers three or seniors, Bowen Johnson, McLean, Cantley,
Grip Swisher is a he's younger, and then Rock o'
huffman is a senior. I tell you what, I I

(46:09):
sort of think this might be k c D's year.
I know you know Ed would not want me to.
I know Ed is very excited about this football team
are They're good.

Speaker 2 (46:20):
But they had to be playing at the Evil Stadium
this week, So there you go.

Speaker 4 (46:26):
I knew that was going to get into it. I
knew you that something.

Speaker 2 (46:29):
Let's go into a rapid fire here. Okay, hey, and
I owe you an apology. You were ten out of
ten on last week too, because I missed. I wrote
it down wrong, and I went back and I listened
to the record make sure I was right, and I
was wrong. I wrote it down wrong. But anyway, you
were ten for ten. You've been ten for ten the

(46:50):
previous two weeks in a row.

When you go with your heart, you Hey, next week,
we got Sarah Middlesbrough and I talked to Coach French,
and you know exactly how that went. I've never heard
coach French, but here, here, here where I'm learning with
Coach French. If Coach French says they're struggling and he's

(47:54):
happy and laughing when he tells you, I think they're
really good. If Coach French tells you they're strong, ruggling
and he's all depressed and moping, I think, then I
think he's telling you the truth.

Speaker 3 (48:05):
And they might be struggle, so they never telling the
truth on those games.

Speaker 5 (48:10):
Hey, don't come through and touch me on this. But
you know, I've been telling people the last forty years.
I'm the only guy that worked for Larry French that
tells the truth.

If it keeps up, then you're gonna have a lot
of people who want it, gonna take you to Vegas.

Speaker 3 (48:41):
They're gonna pay your expenses.

Speaker 5 (48:43):
And that was my personality. Hey, there's no amount of
money to put up with me in my personality. No,
nobody's gonna take me nowhere.

Speaker 3 (48:52):
That's right, here's the rapid fire. Here we go. Apollo
and Marshall.

Speaker 4 (48:58):

Speaker 3 (49:48):

because both teams have not are winless nobody's so somebody
is going to win at least one game this year.
I got Frankfort and Maria.

Speaker 4 (50:11):
Frankfort again.

Speaker 3 (50:14):
I need you to go with your heart with Frankfurt
and I want to go with Frankfort.

Speaker 4 (50:20):
Well, hey, that's tough.

Speaker 5 (50:22):
You got the fighting Raymond Webbs of Frankfort High versus
the fighting Larry Frenches of Maria High School.

Speaker 4 (50:29):
That's a tough one.

Speaker 3 (50:30):

the game.

Hazard.

Speaker 5 (51:37):
I'm gonnay, he got his Matthew Chandler's doing a nice job.
I'm thinking this second year as a head coach Matte.
Matthew's doing a good job at Hazard.

Speaker 3 (51:46):
And he got on me for not picking him, so
uh uh, he got me too.

Speaker 4 (51:51):
I didn't hemroke out, So.

Speaker 3 (51:54):
I'm picking on this game. I guess rid around sixty percent.
Huh Hey, here we go. Listen to this one. Scott
County and Highlands. Mmmm, I know who is going with?
Go on, go on and say it.

Speaker 4 (52:15):

don't think uh. Jim mckeevles two in a row. I'm
going with Scott.

Speaker 4 (52:25):
Yeah, that's a tough one. That's a tough one.

Speaker 3 (52:28):
That's gonna be a really good game.

Speaker 4 (52:30):
Yeah it will be.

Speaker 3 (52:32):
How about Seneca and Butler, Well, you got.

Speaker 5 (52:38):
Me all that.

Speaker 4 (52:38):
I'm gonna go Seneca.

Speaker 2 (52:40):
Yeah, yeah, I've got to go Seneca too, because we
got uh, Kenny Davison over there.

Speaker 5 (52:48):
I know he yeah, I forgot about I like Kenny. Yeah,
and hey, Seneca has got our footballs. Seneca uses them,
so does McCracken County.

There you go, and you picked against mccrackett.

Speaker 6 (53:02):
I know it.

Speaker 4 (53:04):
I'm not very I'm not a very good person. But
go ahead, David.

Speaker 3 (53:08):
That's it right there. That's all of them. Uh so, well,
we'll find out what happens next week.

Speaker 2 (53:12):
You need to pick your game up. At fifty percent
is just not your standard. You're hitting around eighty percent.

Speaker 5 (53:19):
Hey, I'm fighting to keep my head above water in
Lawrenceburg right now, and I'm thanksable to do it.

Speaker 4 (53:26):
I love my job and I love the challenge.

Speaker 5 (53:28):
But if you look up a guy that's got that's
drinking it out of a fire hos right on full blast,

Guest is William Blair, head coach at Madison Central. I
don't know how much I can get him to talk
about this, but I'm going to tell you this about
William Blair. He is the tip bof King in Kentucky.
He Josiah when he was playing at Boyle William was
the JD coach. He said that he was staying next

(54:09):
to William during the JD games and that when the
other team would come up and get lined up, William
would call the play.

Speaker 4 (54:16):
Before the ball was snacked. Now, like I said, I don't.

Speaker 5 (54:18):

He's a great football coach.

Speaker 5 (54:24):
He's been with Coach Frinch, He's been with Coach French
and Mike Holcombs. So that's two pretty good ones. And
then our tough topic. We keep going back to the
well here. Bluegrass Preps has really been a good source
of tough topics.

Speaker 4 (54:37):
And I thought this was good. Guys going both ways, how.

Speaker 5 (54:40):
Do you set up practice, you know, through the week,
so that the guys that are playing both ways.

Speaker 4 (54:46):
How do you get that done? And I thought that
was a really good question because I.

Speaker 5 (54:50):
Do think that you've got to be creative in your approach,
and I like what we're doing right now. But we
hit special teams offense and defense. We hit it all
four days and so far that's been the best approach
for us.

Speaker 3 (55:07):
We'll say that question for next week. We want to
answer it right now.

Speaker 4 (55:11):

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
