Speaker 2 (00:30):
Right right right, Well, if that's true for you, then
you have a ride at the right place at the
right time.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
So we want you to sit back back and escape.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
With us and to our world of harmony, laughter and
tom foolery. So let's get to it. Here's today's episode
of the Castle Past.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
Yeah you hi, guys, sweet slated. Sorry we are. Don't
go to info Atcouncil dot com to tell us we
were late this week. They do that, Bob, Well, they'll say, hey,
you know, can you get on your game please? You know,
I mean there's a large subset out there.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
Okay, there's a large world right here. Whuno dos trace.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
In a recent episode, we discussed about why sometimes the
schedule can get a little askew, So we've covered that
subject and yes, this week. We're late again.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
Christ yea darn it. But look, we can blame me
this week if we like. Let's just choose me.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
It's let's pick Susan.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
I'm here jazz Best. That's right, let's pick me. It
is jazz Best week, which means today, while all leading
up to everybody rehearsing seventeen rehearsals, seventeen everything, because it's
the marathon. Today is the first official day of Jazz Fest.
The fairgrounds open today, and that means the marathon starts.
Like all the boys And.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
Who is the headliner for Jazz as Best, such a
focused festival coming out of New Orleys known for jazz.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
Wow? Wow, I think that by about twenty minutes from now,
I'm going to let you know who the main guy is,
but I can tell you who some of the other
players are because I don't have the main guy.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
I just got to be the elite of the jazz
empire world.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
Go, that's correct. So the deal is is that the
locals is who I'm mostly tuned in for. But one
of our main national acts is Lil Wayne's coming. Lil Wayne.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Yeah, you know, nothing screams jazz more than me personally, and.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
Little Wayne the rap artist. Maybe this will go. Wait.
I think we have a jug band also that will
be playing, which again screams nothing more than trad jazz heritage.
I think that these new bands, any band that isn't jazz,
will fall under the heritage the Jazz and Heritage Festival Moniker. Okay, so,

(02:53):
and but tomorrow Russ is playing with local band Riverbenders,
who I sit in with if I'm here, but bigger
and better. So tomorrow's River Benders and Little Wayne. So
that means that the two grown up kids get in
free tomorrow so they can go see Little Wayne the
wrapper while I watch the baby.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Ah.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
You know what, I'd like to see Little Wayne wrapping
with the jug Band's serious. I'm not even making that
up and being funny.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
I would.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
That'd be kind of cool, right if you think about it.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
Okay, traditions, that's all. That's what's up here. So I literally, guys,
after I'm headed to it.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
We've got a big weekend coming for the cow Sills.
It is a trio trip. We call them te tees now.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
I call We'll go to the longer.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
It's a trio trip because it's like cotton picking. Finger
licking chicken. Fuck. Yeah, you can't mistake it.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
And it's also isn't that like Chuck Chuck Joe Chuck.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
But yeah, it's all those com picking finger licking chicken pluckers,
the Smothers brothers. But that's okay, that's funny. We do
have a weekend coming and we are heading to the
midwest of this country going on the second of May.
We are at the Merriman pack Hey with the Association

(04:18):
in Carnie, Nebraska.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
Yepney, yep.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
From there, we're just gonna hip hop over to Hutchinson,
Kansas and play at the Fox Theater seven thirty at night.
There are two shows at the Merriman two pm, seven pm.
For more detail about what that weekend kind of entails,
please refer to our brother in the Other Square, Paul Colcil.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Thought. We thought we'd let y'all know out there, kind
of like, you know, we just talk about, yeah, we're
going here, and then when we come back after we
have done it on our podcast, we went, oh, yeah,
we went there and we did this. But you guys
don't really know what is happening as far as what
it takes for us to get what we got to
point B. Well, yeah, that's for sure, and this will

(05:09):
be one of those kind of weekends. Pause. Here's how
it's going to roll out for us, and Bob and
Susan don't know this yet, so okay, yeah, so we
all got our flights. We're going to be flying into Carneie.
We get in at six twenty okay, six twenty in
the evening night at night. And and so what that
means is that we're going to miss the rental car

(05:31):
place because they close at six okay, So what's going
to happen is we're going to get picked up by
Denise or a driver at the airport, taken right to
our hotel. Now, we're going to have a great night
at the hotel. We're going to try to get a
lot of rest there because the very next day, so Saturday,
we have two shows. But at eight point fifty in

(05:52):
the morning, we are going to be picked up by
our people and we're going to be taken to I
believe it's a radio show. I'm trying to find out
if it's TV or radio right now, but what we're
gonna it's a PBS, it's a public broadcasting but it's
the Nebraska. You know it's it's actually the we're going
to be doing it at the Museum of Art of

(06:13):
Nebraska Art, okay, and it's going to be a live
of parents, and what they want is we're going to
do a song and then they're going to ask us
a couple of questions. It starts at ten, going to
ask us a couple of questions, and we're going to
do that, and then that'll be that, and it'll be
a really a great thing for us to do. And
so then we're going to go from there. We're going
to go right to them. Now we haven't gotten the

(06:35):
car yet, okay, we're still being chauffeured about, which is cool.
And so then we're going to be taken from the
Museum of Art over to the Merryman, where the sound
checks will be happening. Uh, the Association are gonna sound
check first, and then we're coming in last. We're not
really worried about it because we're doing our threesome and

(06:57):
this is about the quickest thing as far as soundcheck
could ever be. It's really an easy a production deal
for us. So then we're going to go there and
then after that thing right there at the Merryman. We're
going to be taken from there to get the rent
a car.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
Oh, after a radio.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
Thing, after the radio thing, after I afcheck, after eying, okay,
and I'm finding out about I know there's green rooms
in the dressing rooms. So we'll make a decision on
our own whether we want to leave at eight point
fifty prepared for the whole day to go to the
Merryman to get the car to come because they're saying
you can go get the car, then go back to

(07:39):
the hotel and then come over to the Merriman. I
don't know if we're going to get that go back
to the hotel thing, if it's going to feel good
to us at all to do that. We're probably gonna
want to get to this.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
No, we know it's not already this is room in
the room.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
Yeah, okay. So so then we go to the Merriment
and we do that, and then we'll go get the
car and we'll head right back to the Merriment. So
we'll probably want to have our clothes with us and
those kinds of things. We'll be ready for the day,
but they make it a lot easier for us. And
and so then we uh and then we do the
show at two, you know, and after first two shows,

(08:18):
man day.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
This very exciting stuff. Keep going.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
Yeah, and these are fifty minutes sets.

Speaker 3 (08:24):
Just yeah, fifty minute sets incording fifteen minutes. Go ahead, yep,
And that's nothing for us. That's like we're going to
be looking for more time. We're going to be going
into the Association's time.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
No no, no, we're not.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
No, no no, we're not. We'll be very bad, okay.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
And so and so there we are. We do our
two shows, we do our meet and greets, and we
do all of that on Saturday, and then Sunday we
wake up, we'll probably limit will probably our sound check
in uh in Kansas is at three thirty. So it's
a it's a a four hour drive and we're going

(09:02):
to not have traffic because it's Saturday. It's the weekend.
So it's a four hour drive. We can leave at
ten or eleven, eleven, twelve, one, two, three, So well, yeah,
we could leave at ten thirty, you know, to split
the day and then yeah, it really is. I mean,
it'll seem very cash. And so then we go there
and we'll do that show and we're gonna so we

(09:24):
were going to get rid of Oh my god, I
had so many weird scenarios happening to try to get
that U well and so but what we ended up
here and it was car Well, rent the car, where
to dump the car. The problem is is that the
enterprises in both Kansas and Nebraska suppose it on goddly
hours and they're not open Saturday and Sunday, and these

(09:47):
are the two days we're working. I didn't want to
leave it with Josh the promoter to return on the Monday,
because that's like paying extra money for nothing. So and
then when you guys go, man, let's stay in full control.
So now here we are, and we're in Kansas, and
we do our show there and now it's all up
to us. We have our car. We're fifteen minutes from

(10:09):
Wichita Airplace, airline five oh five, fifteen minutes, it's not
even an hour.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
And I pay the drop off, you drop the car
at the airport.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
Well, that's what we're doing. We're gonna roll to the airport.
It's gonna be it'll be four in the morning when
we get there, or hopefully a little earlier. Uh, and
then we'll go and we'll dump the car. I've already
told them we're dumping late and then we'll we'll be
there and I don't know how big Wichita is. I'll
find out these little things as that week go by,

(10:41):
you know. But maybe we just walked to the terminal,
or maybe that bust will be there. We're not gonna
really worry about that, I feel, I believe so I
think I don't think it's as small as Redmond, but
it could be Branson, you know. I'm thinking of a
Branson kind of an airport kind of thing, and so
then and then that would be that, and then we
have finished it. It'll be a tough weekend, you know.

(11:03):
I know it sounds we just read it and that
sounds easy enough, but you know, physically doing all these
things is always a bit different. Yeah, let me.

Speaker 3 (11:10):
Speak now here. Here's the insight for our listeners. Okay,
because this is starting to fill in, like what do
these people do when they're not on stage on these weekends? Out? Okay,
but listen, here's the deal.

Speaker 1 (11:22):
Why can't we hang out now?

Speaker 3 (11:24):
Now? You know what Paul does. We all have jobs
in the band, Okay, and you just heard Paul's report
to the committee on his job and he handles all
this stuff. It's like, I maybe it's my age. I'm
contracts in merch, Paul is this, and it's like it
all works out. And when I hear Paul do what

(11:45):
he does, I'm really glad that I have to do it.

Speaker 1 (11:47):
I I care contracts and merch.

Speaker 3 (11:50):
You digging it and well, now yesterday I had a
good day. For instance, Paul and Susan can generically address
that we thought of searched out and just a little
money that was kind of sitting there that we got
a sense about. Anyway, we have talked about, right Paul, Yeah,
so you go, that's that's a lot of work. Well

(12:10):
please just described Okay, there's little sleep, very little sleep.

Speaker 1 (12:15):
Honestly, very little sleep, and we are all.

Speaker 3 (12:18):
Work putting it together. That's a lot of phone calls.
It's a lot of texting.

Speaker 1 (12:22):
He's paid for it. That's for the guy. Do have
the girl and anymore? You're right, Look, look guess what
I bought. I'm going to bring something to a table
because of everything you just said and freaking phones. I'll
be right back. You'll see you'll love it all right.

Speaker 3 (12:44):
Anyway, So Carney, that's fifty two fifty minute shows. We
can just go over the few. Hey, you guys in Hutchinson,
the show's at seven thirty. We're gonna do like a
seventy five minute set there. One well, this one show,
we're gonna do about a seventy five minute set in
Hunching Sin and uh, hey, maybe we'll put a Q
in it. We love Q and as and we have

(13:05):
got some good questions at info A Council. By the way,
you guys are writing in some good stuff. I know
we get on tangents and we don't get to it,
but we will eventually. I got to go over a
meeting I had with brand from Omnivore. Okay, now, oh yeah,
go ahead.

Speaker 1 (13:24):
Wait this is important.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
Wait what do you have?

Speaker 1 (13:26):
I don't know how quite to show it because you know.

Speaker 2 (13:29):
The same way you did it. You get in front
of it.

Speaker 3 (13:32):
All you audio people, Susan, we hear her. We don't
see her.

Speaker 1 (13:36):
Story, Bob, while I work on this about Omnivore and
your talk with Brad and all.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
Take away your green screen, Susan to show us this.

Speaker 1 (13:44):
I don't have one there it is. What do you see?

Speaker 3 (13:49):
I see your calendar?

Speaker 1 (13:50):
What kind big big? The kind you put on your
destiny is so giant and it is do you polly
this every year? I stay because I can't look at
that phone in all those dots and all the colors
because it's all color coded and we have five different
color codes. But this tells me what I'm doing because

(14:13):
Dad always had these. This is how I grew up,
so just wanting to share it.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
Nice.

Speaker 3 (14:19):
I also would never be able to transfer the way
I do that thing with that calendar to my wrists
where I'm going like that.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (14:27):
It's just ridiculous. This is my favorite thing right in
front of me. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (14:32):
I do forget to turn the page every now and
then because for the next month, yeah, you know, an
empty month, I never look at it. You know, it's
pretty funny.

Speaker 1 (14:42):
Yeah, okay, God, you were going to share omnivoy.

Speaker 3 (14:45):
Yeah, I will just one more common. What's great is
when you put them behind each other, you don't throw
them away, so you'll pull out a year and you'll
look at, Holy Mother of God, how did I do that?

Speaker 1 (14:56):
All?

Speaker 3 (14:56):
Right? Anyway? And you can see with brad Our owner
slash president, slash CEO, slash supporter at Omnivore Recordings and
tapes and CDs in Pasadena. It was great just to
touch base, you know, and get caught up. And he
started talking about the Cocaine Drain album because that's next,

(15:20):
and we all know when something's next, then you can
talk about it.

Speaker 2 (15:23):
Okay, in.

Speaker 3 (15:26):
Bradswell, you know how these people move on. They're kind
of building a box set in our very eyes in
front of us. Anyway, so here comes the next entry,
all right, And I got to tell you his first question. Okay,
So he goes, so let me ask you about the
Cocaine Drain album. I said, cool. You know, he goes there,

(15:46):
he goes, is there any way to change the name
of that? He goes, He goes, I go, he goes.
I mean, and he felt it's an old trap, right,
but he couldn't reconcile the Cowciles recording an album called

(16:08):
the Cocaine Drain Album. Okay, And and he goes and
he says that, I said, no, Brad. The interesting thing
is actually that exact thing that the Cowciles recorded the
Cocaine album, and I reversed it on him. But anyway,
with a little discussion, I explained the history. There's no
way that just that's ridiculous. It's like it can't happen.

(16:36):
Oh yeah, I go, that's historically just set in stone.
And I said, I said, look, it's not like we
sat down in me Hey, what are we What are
we going to call our album? It never got to
be an album. So we didn't call the album anything
because it didn't have a name.

Speaker 1 (16:52):
But everybody knows.

Speaker 3 (16:54):
It was referenced as the Cocaine Draining Album. And in
the beginning it probably was as simple as that's the
first song on the album, the Cocaine Cream. Okay, and
it's true in its true history where everything is shed
and shown, there's an irony in the title of the record.
That is an absolute truth. Okay, it ended up being

(17:18):
ironic that of all things, okay, but it really was
just it was the first song written by John Hall,
et cetera. So then then he goes, then Bract goes, well,
are you gonna let us do the album cover? I said, absolutely,
you did a global He goes, he goes, well, I
don't know what what our guy could could come up with,

(17:40):
but that will let's wait and see, man, you know,
And it's just it was so funny how it just
pops a reaction from people, Look, we've lived with it
our whole life. It's it's like it's like the living
Sweet that's the same words as the Living Room Sweeter,
the Cocaine Vrain album or Abbey Road. So to other
people thought, what.

Speaker 2 (18:01):
Yeah, but you know, I mean, well right away cocaine drain.
Obviously it's negative about cocaine. I mean it's not it's
not building cocaine up. It's actually going, hey, don't do this,
not at all. It can be trouble, you know.

Speaker 3 (18:16):
I think in the environment, whatever, right, whatever, and and
then and then then I was thinking about it. I
came up with a cover for it. I did. I.
I came up with a just start with a black square, okay,
and in good white print put the cocaine bring an
album by the Councils Jesus.

Speaker 1 (18:37):
That's beautiful.

Speaker 2 (18:39):
Oh that's like Kanye Kanye West.

Speaker 3 (18:43):
Don't want to copy anybody, but that's how I see it.

Speaker 2 (18:46):
Kanye's last album came out, it didn't have any writing
on it. It came out and it was just black.

Speaker 1 (18:51):
Without okay, but listen, listen, listen. Yeah, just really beautiful
way that it's so understated. If that says it. And
it's a black cover.

Speaker 2 (19:04):
It's a black cover. And then but in the cow
cells we make lines, you know, don't make it perfect lettering,
you can't.

Speaker 1 (19:13):
We can't do that with Little Mountain.

Speaker 2 (19:17):
I know.

Speaker 3 (19:18):
It's tempting to misbehave with the suggestion. It's like, don't
make it crisp outline, make it wrinkly so it looks like, yeah,
tempting hide stuff maybe and maybe on the back of
the album it's a white album and in black it's
the Cocaine Drain album by the Cosciles.

Speaker 1 (19:35):
Oh God, you're just thrilling me. I want you to
write these. I want to.

Speaker 3 (19:41):
Idea.

Speaker 2 (19:41):
But you know what, guys, there's pictures out there also. Well, Bob,
that picture that you put on the original Cocaine Drain album.

Speaker 1 (19:51):
I don't remember it.

Speaker 3 (19:52):
That's our global that's our picture. Yeah, that's our picture.
Like we got the one global.

Speaker 1 (19:58):
One that was that cool flat gig.

Speaker 2 (20:01):
Well, and it was a cool picture and it would
show us all at that age, you know, at the time, you.

Speaker 1 (20:08):
Know, okay, another option.

Speaker 3 (20:10):
And the band had look that band was burying you
and me and Susan and Johnny Boy and.

Speaker 1 (20:15):
Dennis everybody's represented, and we haven't put a good suggestion
no matter what it should be in there.

Speaker 3 (20:21):
We could put a call out for anybody because this
way free internet. Okay, anybody have pictures from the cocaine
drained days, and believe me, I think we can gather
some things. You never know. But yeah, and and never
kept the camera going down to Clover. We were knuckleheads, man,

(20:43):
but we never viewed ourselves as historic at the time.

Speaker 1 (20:46):
Bob. Also, you guys, we didn't realize our lives were
going to be on social media. You don't. We wouldn't, right,
It never would have occurred to us to do. Yeah,
that's correct, don't get me started.

Speaker 2 (21:02):
Hey. Also, I mean you would have had to have
a real camera at the cocaine drain thing. It wasn't
about phones.

Speaker 3 (21:09):
I'm talking about even an instamatic Hey here we are, here,
we are, here's Toby.

Speaker 2 (21:14):
That would have happened.

Speaker 1 (21:16):
That would look great, you guys, I know I interrupt
this regularly scheduled podcast to say, please go out and
get your Betty White stamps if you haven't already.

Speaker 2 (21:24):
Yeah, okay, you know, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, Well that's great.
So then so soup a year and a half or so,
the Cocaine Drain album.

Speaker 3 (21:40):
Not not at all, not at all. No, they think August.
They're looking at August. Okay, yeah, now that was a if,
or maybe that wasn't. It's coming out in August, that's
what they're thinking. By the way, guys, folks, we'll bring
you in the middle of meetings here, but we are

(22:03):
next to respond with, like, hey, even that susan even
album cover suggestions that we just came up with, we
can go back with that. We can go back with
could you give us what are your thoughts about releasing this?
We've we've met, we know what's coming out. Give us
some details and see what what's what they're up on,
you know, see what they did.

Speaker 1 (22:21):
I like it. It's very exciting, you know. I mean,
we're really loves going to be it's going to.

Speaker 3 (22:25):
Be the Green album and this one's going to have
five bonus tracks. Couldn't it be love? She said to me,
say you love me? You know the others? You know, yes,
you know it's going to be those that little group
we did at Emmett Road Studio out in the valley,

(22:46):
a lot of it.

Speaker 1 (22:47):
That was a really fun day. I remember that was fun.

Speaker 3 (22:50):
That was Couldn't It Be Love? I remember that because
I was asleep on the couch. It was very late
at night. Toby had to wake me up to do
the league guitar arp Couldn't It Be Loved? And he
told me later that I was so grumpy and that
he woke me that that's why it sounds the way
it goes so raunchy and mean.

Speaker 1 (23:10):
I like that.

Speaker 3 (23:12):
Okay, now I can go with that.

Speaker 1 (23:16):
I remember loving that song because Dwight had a song
called Couldn't It Be Loved on his current record at
the time, and then you came to me with that
and I'm like, oh, it's kismet, funny.

Speaker 3 (23:26):
Yeah, and then we do Say You Love Me? And
Toby was there on the early demos when John saying
that demo we wrote called Please Don't Say You Love Me?
So Toby looks at us, he goes, so you got
so you write a song called say You Love Me
and then you write please Don't Say You Love Me? Hey, okay,
so let's get let's we got to finish up the
gigs to be professionals. Guys. We got to talk about

(23:48):
Tom Ball. Tom Ball on May tenth, Paul go.

Speaker 2 (23:52):
Yeah, I just wanted to so and so. Then you
and Brad wrapped it up.

Speaker 3 (23:56):
With yeah, that was it in terms of it ended
up being just cocaine drain. Uh kind of focused thing.
Oh and then you know, always he talks about the
Acappella album. He thinks that's the best of all of them.
And that's a great opinion, you know, because his phrases.
Look at that, I gotta he says, I tell people,

(24:17):
he goes, this isn't just acappella. Okay, so whatever, you know,
these are three harmonies and they sing him.

Speaker 1 (24:24):
So need to make a Christmas record. I'm just saying,
And that's been okay, just saying, oh, there was a suggestion.

Speaker 3 (24:30):
Thank you, Susan. You reminded me. Yeah, Christmas album. Wouldn't
it be great?

Speaker 2 (24:37):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (24:39):
Another thought from Brad he uh down the road. The
Acappella album has eight songs. Okay, we've done eight eight
And he thinks, with the passage of time and the
history of releases and what we got going on, that
if we went in and picked one from Rhythm of
the World and one from Global and one from the

(24:59):
Cocaine album and added that and got it to eleven
it'd be like unbelievable, not terrible. That's a suggestion.

Speaker 2 (25:07):
And acapella, those three songs.

Speaker 3 (25:10):
Acapella the ones to go with these and bring it
up to date and finish it off, and just thinks
it would be unbelievable, you know. So look, we always
are open to it does sound good, of course our
brains immediately go to studio time cost.

Speaker 1 (25:27):
Well, here's the thing, and here's what my brain said.
Steve Nails has been dying and wanting to and before
COVID came, remember we were heading up there to do
some backgrounds for him because recordings we could do that.
We forget it all done, so I'll put a b
in the bonnets up at a time.

Speaker 2 (25:48):
Yeah, and it's almost it's almost acapella now. But man,
we could do getting Ready.

Speaker 3 (25:55):
Well in terms of what are we going to do, Yeah.

Speaker 1 (25:58):
Well, Paulie said it, it's already kind of almost.

Speaker 3 (26:00):
That's that's a good that one you don't do getting ready,
but anyway, you know, it's tempting. God, I don't know
what you do. Getting Ready is a very good one,
very good. Oh maybe we could tag and all that
business and games are going already, what are you doing

(26:26):
some good years.

Speaker 1 (26:27):
People ask how do you guys do what you do?
We have no idea, And it's like if if we were,
if we were in a studio, we could do it. Now, see,
it just happens.

Speaker 3 (26:37):
We don't know, do some good years in one day?
Al Cappella. Come up with something for that one? Maybe easy,
but honestly, God, I know it's gonna sound funny to
all of you, but I don't have our own albums memorized.
I gotta go look at them, and I can't remember
all those songs from even the old ones. What was
that one on? What was that one? On? That one?

(26:58):
It's like I hear you mess up there? You know,
because I'll look at global and I'll see too. I
didn't think of just sitting there thinking, you know, all.

Speaker 2 (27:08):
Right, that's right.

Speaker 3 (27:09):
I forgot about that, right, like what I believe or what?
All right? So anyway, that was the final end of
the of the meeting.

Speaker 2 (27:18):
Good good And then as I was thinking, maybe they
wouldn't even want to keep going with this, uh, with
what they're doing, you know.

Speaker 1 (27:27):
Yeah, they went through a lot with the fires and
all y'all there, they were a.

Speaker 2 (27:31):
Lot, Yeah, but they don't really seem to care how many,
how many units we sell about of these things to
keep their head going forward.

Speaker 1 (27:42):
They've never been about that. They've been about music from
the first time I met him in the nineties right on.

Speaker 2 (27:48):
Yeah, they weren't.

Speaker 1 (27:49):
Looking money off the drifters. They knew. They just want
to get that music out there.

Speaker 3 (27:53):
They care And when it comes to us, they've been
working a long game. And I and we see the
inning is now. You know we we remember in the beginning,
I kind of wanted it all out at once, and
this is a long game. It's the only game.

Speaker 2 (28:07):
We got game right. And here we are at the
end of the long rank game.

Speaker 1 (28:14):
We're in the middle of it.

Speaker 3 (28:16):
I have to say one thing about Paul's dissertation. One
last thing about the weekend coming up in Nebraska, Kansas,
because I can't get a phrase out of my head.
It keeps pounding me. The first thing he said was
we're going to get in and we're going to have
a real fun night and get a lot of rest. Okay,
I'm going now. First, my young brain says, those two,

(28:38):
don't those two they work together. But I go open
it in an oldies man. That's like sounds like Nirvana,
A real good time is a lot of rest. And
I'm still My reaction to that was that because that

(29:00):
the funny thing.

Speaker 1 (29:01):
It's like one.

Speaker 3 (29:04):
So let's see and then September tenth, we're in Arlington.
We'll get into that real quick because there was a
message in info at council about Friday Harbor July twenty sixth,
which we are going to be at. But the answer
to your question is no, there is not going to
be a second show in the town the next day.
This is a private event at the at the Honeywell

(29:25):
State and that's what it is this time. Correct, Paul, right, correct?

Speaker 2 (29:30):
Correct. I talked to Lars and he he said, unfortunately,
we could not get it together.

Speaker 3 (29:35):
So we're fine that We're fine with that.

Speaker 2 (29:38):
Cool to let everyone well, to let everybody know who
can't come. But we're excited because Felix Cavalier and his
rascals are coming out with us.

Speaker 1 (29:46):
Yeah, that's really exciting.

Speaker 2 (29:49):
That's going to be crazy.

Speaker 1 (29:50):
That's the twenty sixth of July. Right when do we
back out with camp.

Speaker 2 (29:53):
I want to see how this whole transpot thing happens
this year with Felix coming into Seattle sells coming into
Seattle is going to try to guys, will you please
rent a van and do that drive? And I'm going
to say no, we will not.

Speaker 1 (30:10):
Thank you, Paulie. You guys are doing stewards out there,
doing this too much.

Speaker 3 (30:15):
Here's the big decision. The twenty seventh, Okay, we're going
home from the Friday Harbor gig. The twenty eighth, We're
getting on a plane to get back on the Happy
Together tour, which starts on the twenty ninth. Okay, I
don't know where that tour is starting, but I am
ninety five percent sure that I'm going from Seattle, Washington

(30:39):
to that tour and I'm not going to insert that day. Yeah,
so we can physically if I can physically do it,
but if it's like just land and turn around, I
can't put myself through it. I won't survive it. Yeah,
well we're stating I'll survive it, but you know what
I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (30:56):
Like we did last time.

Speaker 2 (30:58):
Yeah, we're playing in being a to New York, which
is close to Syracuse, but Binghamton has its own airport,
you know, and and you know we've flown into small
towns and the planes are not propeller planes unless you're
in you know, one of those Alaskan air guys, which
are jet propelled. But so I would think because we yeah,

(31:20):
because just the way we flew into carnee People flying
to Omaha, they don't fly into Parney, okay, but we're
flying into Carnebie. So it'll be that, you know, it'll
be the smaller jet. You know, the connection jets that
we've been on a million times.

Speaker 1 (31:34):
It was not meant to die in a small jet.
That was clearly.

Speaker 2 (31:36):
We went to Hawaii, So we want to look at
that because you know, it's north, it's northern New York.
So Syracuse and Buffalo these are names that are mentioned
about airports, but they're like eighty miles away, seventy three
miles away. So we're going to fly in.

Speaker 3 (31:53):
For that then you paid for you know, they're not
paying for us. So no, we'll look into that at
the time. But that's bloom. Yeah, we've got Abbey Road
on the river, you guys. Next year, late May twenty
second and twenty third, we're gonna learn Beatles songs.

Speaker 1 (32:09):
Learn Beatles songs.

Speaker 3 (32:11):
Yeah, we will learn new ones. I mean, look, we
what can we do today? We could do eight days
a week. This boy, another one boy, the third we
can do I'll be back.

Speaker 2 (32:21):
Yes that we've already done.

Speaker 1 (32:23):
That was really good too, Guys.

Speaker 3 (32:25):
Right there there, you good, but we're you can hear
this boy and I'll be back this weekend.

Speaker 1 (32:30):
Folks, I just think we already know them, but then
when I sing that boy, when I'm supposed to say this,
it proves I don't.

Speaker 3 (32:37):
So I love it.

Speaker 1 (32:39):
It's the funnest thing now in front of that song
makes me tickled.

Speaker 3 (32:44):
Yeah, okay, tenth, we didn't talk about Main Street crossing.
We're thank you for having us back a third time.

Speaker 2 (32:53):
That's Matt at Tumball. Matt. We love you, Matt, thanks you,
We love Matt.

Speaker 3 (32:58):
Matt eight PM show on the tenth. You know the scene.
There are people who have gone there. We just love it.
It's very intimate and the food's good, is.

Speaker 2 (33:08):
Great, and you know, it's funny because h and Matt
knows his his he knows his people, he knows his club,
he knows his town. But for the councils, we think,
you know, we're thinking, wow, he keeps bringing us back,
you know, not just every year. Twice in a year,
and he must feel as though it works, it's supported.
You know, he's not there there.

Speaker 3 (33:29):
They're already booked our last gig for this year on
December fifteenth, and then we kind of holidays.

Speaker 1 (33:35):
We listen, y'all.

Speaker 2 (33:37):
I mean, so there you go. So it's another mini
residency like Vegas.

Speaker 1 (33:41):
I was just going to say, it's like Vegas.

Speaker 3 (33:42):
I mean, there are too many residencies, yep.

Speaker 1 (33:46):
So I guess sometimes people's model does not require some
mall out situation their model, you know, like because they
have anchor gigs for their venue that bring them big, big, big,
and then they can do whatever they you know, I mean,
you got to figure there's a rhythm for these folks.

Speaker 3 (34:03):
Since you mentioned anchor gig, Susan, I did want to
bring up the point that, yes, there is a third
mini residency available to us. We know about it. We
will get back to the cutting room in New York City.
It'll happen. But it's such a you know what happened, folks.
It's so expensive to move this group around to one
night in New York City. You've got to have an

(34:25):
associate with that anchor gig Wolf. Then we were there
last February in the wolf Den. Now I know they're
skipping probably, but it'd be nice if we could get
back there. Man, they're the best cod gig for us
with New York City. It's perfect that weekend. But that
and Steve, if you hear this, man, we love you
at the cutting room. We love all the bands you

(34:47):
have and we're coming back. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (34:52):
And Susie, that's like home over there.

Speaker 3 (34:54):
Yeah, we got and plus my life was interrupted issues
that that you know were and then you couldn't. You
almost didn't, but but then you didn't. You know that
goes on. We'll get there. We'll get there. You guys.
We love a night in New York City.

Speaker 1 (35:10):
Oh we do. We love the pizza. I mean, good lord,
the pizza. Pizza. You said info, you had interesting something,
you know.

Speaker 3 (35:18):
What, it's really uh interesting? Your letters, Info are great.
Let me go to one. I just need to go
to one. Actually one of them was about dad and
we'll only have time for this is very interesting that
she wrote in and asked if our dad ever apologized

(35:39):
for sabotaging our career. That's one question I want to
answer that. The other was what was your relationship with
him after everything fell apart? Which you guys could just
give a short thing on and I could too, and
it was one other component. But that's enough, because I'm
going to tell you something. Number One, our dad did
not savage our career. We had, we are still having

(36:02):
a great career in my opinion. Okay, I don't go
there to Dad about sabotaging the career. He's sabotage steps
along the way during the career. I'll give him that
some very terrible ones, and that we were able to
keep our heads above water. And yeah, maybe if he
had have been a better manager or a better person,

(36:24):
a better dad, maybe the stuff we're putting out even
today with some millions and millions, because it does you know,
if the Jonas Brothers do an album a night at
Yankee Stadium, that kind of thing.

Speaker 2 (36:33):
Paul, right, Well, you know, I agree with you, Bob.
I don't think he sabotaged our career. What he sabotaged
was the family. He sabotaged our personal existence in the
world as we moved forward. Look, I mean, we all
got issues, were all damaged in some kind of way,
and that's all because of Bud, you know. So. But

(36:54):
as far as musically and the music and stuff. He
was just in over his head. Guys. You know, it
wasn't like he was to sabotage anything. He was in
over his head. And I think he needed to keep
drinking to just like go, wow, man, I'm weighing over
my head.

Speaker 3 (37:07):
Well, he needed to keep drinking because people that do that,
their attitude is I got this, Okay. So he took
care of the family. Look, we can all admit he
blew it. Okay, Now over into the career, he's more
an obstacle than anything to himself and of course us
in the business and what we're trying to accomplish. Look,

(37:28):
every other step of the way was his misstep, okay,
that we had to recover from, and did you know
in some astonishing ways at times. Okay, but in the
long run, that's just gonna just gonna everything. So but
so in that regard, yeah, did he ever?

Speaker 2 (37:46):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (37:46):
That was it? Did he The third one was did
he did he ever say he was sorry? And I
will only say one thing that in People magazine itself,
the quote I'll never forget was he said I would
not have wanted me for a father. And that was
apology enough for me, because a guy like that's not
going to sit down and say oh because he sat

(38:07):
us down and was screaming at us because we never
said thank you to him one day. Okay. So it's
like these people that interpret the way they do and
read it the way they read, and that's what you
deal with. You manage that, and that's what we did
with him and Susan.

Speaker 1 (38:21):
I just personally think there wasn't To me, sabotage is
an intentional move, right. One can self sabotage unintentionally. You
do stuff that sabotage is your mission, what your intention was,
and then you do something that does not move in
that direction, and that is a sabotage. But I think

(38:43):
all dads sabotaging all of it. He did plenty of
it was unintentional. He didn't know. He just didn't know.
And there's a period into that an insert topic here,
Insert topic here, Insert topic here. He didn't know anything.

Speaker 3 (39:00):
He didn't hand him his grave era was not knowing.
His grave era was not saying to himself, well, I
better go find somebody who does there you go, successful
people do right, You're going to do that right. I
can go one sentence on what happened to me and

(39:20):
my parents. After all that, when it all fell apart,
everyone's gone. Okay, my misstep in life was was I
did not pursue a relationship with my dad. I let
it go. I didn't see him. And because my mom
was loyal to my dad, I didn't see her either,
And that was the mistake. I sacrificed my mother because

(39:41):
she stayed with a person that just I just couldn't
do it. I couldn't do it. And I didn't know
they were both going to die young. I wish I
had known that, because we all know what would have happened. Okay,
eventually he'd be in a square, they'd both being squares.
I assume you know what I mean. That's not going
to be allowed to happen. And then you have regrets, okay,

(40:03):
and then you learn your lessons and you can help
others and all that. I hear you, And and I
sacrificed grandparents to my children for that, which they still
talk to me about. You know, I misstepped. Okay, now we.

Speaker 1 (40:17):
Haven't learned, guys. That phrase was for you. Guys did great?

Speaker 3 (40:22):
You did great?

Speaker 1 (40:23):
Yeah, I think we all did great, and and and
quite honestly, evidently all Budd and Barb had was exactly
what they had, so that they made it as far
as they did. I'm sure if we were to look
at the you know, their dossier and what was to come,
I mean, they kind of accomplished more than accidentally they
probably ever ever would have had we not been in

(40:46):
their lives.

Speaker 3 (40:48):
Remember Paul, because Paul, you guys pursued relationships with Dad
Mama as any child shoot up. And Paul told me
one day, because he knew I was out of the loop,
he kills a man. Dad's just making up for what
he was like as a father by being a cool grandfather,
you know. And I was glad to hear that.

Speaker 2 (41:06):
I really he did.

Speaker 1 (41:07):
And you talked to any one of those kids or.

Speaker 3 (41:08):
Experienced kids out there, but I was glad to hear that. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (41:16):
Well, I did have a conversation with Dad on a
couple of times, you know, and the one thing I
asked him, you know, and I called book, I said
to him bullshit. But anyway, but I said to him,
so did you ever have fun? And he looked at
me and goes, no, not a minute, not a minute
of fun. And I went, oh, that's such bullshit. You
guys were in your thirties early forties with millions of dollars.

(41:37):
But he wouldn't give it up. It wasn't fun for him.
And the other thing is I asked him, I goes,
so do you feel guilty about you know, all the
boundings we got from you? And he looked right at
me and he goes, I don't, not one bit, not
one bit, do I feel guilty about doing that?

Speaker 3 (41:52):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (41:53):
Dad was not remorseful. This is my problem left with dad,
my dad. You know. I mean, I won't even get
into it. I did get one apology because I refuse
to stay to help with mom until he did, because
I hadn't seen him since I was what whenever I
came to your house and he gave me, he gave
me the really really awful if I hurt you, I'm

(42:16):
so sorry, and it was like and I just looked
at him and went, you know what, this is a
pretty important moment. So that pitiful apology I will actually
just take so we can get this done. Because he
just didn't think he did anything. No, no, no, not
the last time I saw him, and so he does now, guys,

(42:37):
trust me, he's over in the other lane. Polly where
it's all and he's going, whoa, I'm surprised they didn't
kill me.

Speaker 2 (42:45):
Those oh Dad, those young men. But Dad being Dad,
he's over there and he's looking at us, and he's going,
you know, I told them what I was doing for
them was making it so they could always make a buck.

Speaker 1 (42:57):
No, he's got some guy telling him he's full of it.
Don't worry. Right over there, they're like, there is no
room for his bs over there. I love it. Good questions,
family and fans. You are not fans, our family, and
we appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (43:13):
To topics sometimes, you know, hold on, let me bring it,
let me get the.

Speaker 1 (43:21):
So we should have two versions of the podcast.

Speaker 2 (43:26):
Oh that would be wild, Ohno.

Speaker 1 (43:29):
That's what we're going to make our market history.

Speaker 3 (43:31):
Y'all stay together? Did they stay together till mom died? Yes?
They did. Mom stayed loyalty down and finishing this last
cent question. Did stay loyal to Dad? Stayed with him
until she died? He stayed with her, and they kept together?
They did, not.

Speaker 1 (43:47):
Get they did. Dad and Mom did split up at
one point. I only know this because I got dragged
back into the house for the ninth grade. Paul I
think you'll remember the event. I came right there, but
I went home for the ninth grade because Dad had
joined Merchant Marines and he was in the Philippines for
a while. But other than that separation time, they were

(44:07):
together until the end. And I'm going to go one
step further because because this is the truth, and that's
what matters. My dad took amazing care of my mom
while she was dying. Now, I was right there with him,
and so was Ellie, her best friend, and the three
of us did However, he could have done nothing. He
could have left her in the hospital. He could have

(44:28):
done a lot of things, and he didn't. And he
tended to her till her very last breath. And he
needs to have that as part of his dussi EG
because he could have just Ellie was there, I was there.
He could have got to give him at least that.

Speaker 3 (44:46):
All Right, that's pretty heavy, so we don't want to
end on heavy, Okay, so we'll just go to this
real quickie. This girl is this is beautiful, This is Sinda.
Hey you guys, since this girl goes Hey, I love
your podcast. I'm listening to you. I wanted to share
that my family watched You Guys on Ed Sullivan. My

(45:06):
mom got enamored with Susan's look. She took me down
to the salon the next day. The next day after
the Ed Salvan show, and I got my haircut to
look just like Susan's. I wonder how many other girls
had that happen. Also, I was given a tamber. I
got a tambourine for Christmas, and as I recall, tambourines
became a very big seller in the series catalog after

(45:29):
Susan came on TV driving the tambourine stocked Susan.

Speaker 1 (45:35):
Find out I'd feel so cool. Isn't that cool?

Speaker 3 (45:38):
And so she says, who sings the chorus with your mom?
On top of the ring of the parking other things?
I thought it, man, I love the flower, But that's
not what she's talking about. Who does the last? Happy?
Is it? John? So can I don't know, so I
can make you happy? Now?

Speaker 2 (45:58):
Happy?

Speaker 3 (45:59):
Is that John?

Speaker 1 (46:00):
Because he sounds like me?

Speaker 3 (46:02):
It's and you're not on the park.

Speaker 1 (46:04):
But it's that little baby voice listen to You'll know
when you hear it.

Speaker 2 (46:10):
Hey, and I know that everybody knows this, but you know,
we want to try to you know, mention it as
much as we can remember. Sorry, but John and Vicky John,
you know John Castle Vicky they album out. They just
had a big you know, that's fun thing I forget
in l A. Yeah, but no, what's the thing where

(46:33):
we didn't do it, but we were going to do
it Friday, you know, Vinyl day in some.

Speaker 1 (46:38):
Store records store day. Yeah, they released their album on
record store.

Speaker 2 (46:44):
Right, and they did that, and so yeah, everybody get it,
go look for it.

Speaker 1 (46:48):
Get it.

Speaker 3 (46:51):
We said it's burying Bill's tunes, right, we mentioned that.

Speaker 2 (46:56):
Yeah, what's the name of it. It's called.

Speaker 1 (47:00):
The Fire, the Fall After the Fire, the End.

Speaker 3 (47:03):
There you go.

Speaker 2 (47:04):
I mean I've heard some stuff. It's great, you guys.
Johnny's uh you know.

Speaker 3 (47:08):
For John, So for the Smitherings, and look for the
two of them out there. They're getting booked. I know
they're getting booked. Yeah, yeah, you will see you next
week one more before we hit the road for the Midwest.
And uh, really good visiting with everybody, you guys.

Speaker 2 (47:23):
Yeah, And one last thing, I do want to let
all my all my people out there. I've had two
p s as in the last six months and they
both come up negative. Zero. So I have one coming
up in a week and after that one, and the
doctors say, well, it's too quick before the last one.
So that's going to say below negative uh negative zero.
So so not today, but maybe, uh you know, after

(47:46):
the seventh of May, I'll be cancer free. I think
I'm cancer free right now, honestly because of these numbers
I'm getting. And so I got one more number, and
just everybody's been asking about it and all that kind
of stuff. So I want to let them all know.
Everything is great movie. And we've opened up the gates
to book more shows all the way through the Winner,
so nothing's holding us back.

Speaker 1 (48:07):
Well, and that's.

Speaker 3 (48:10):
A medical report from Paul Mitchell. We've been at that
a long time with Paulie. Man, it's been a long haul.

Speaker 1 (48:20):
