Speaker 1 (00:01):
This week on the show, we have Kaela Cardone from
the hit Netflix real estate show selling Oc. Hello and welcome.
Thank you so much for watching. This show is all
about giving you insights and showcasing brands that help you
to live your best life and give you confidence. As always,
I want to kick start your morning with some motivation
and advice to help you to feel inspired and energize
(00:23):
to start your day Today, I want to talk about
the importance of understanding that you are in a league
of your own. Each of us were born with special talents, gifts,
and personalities that make us special and unique. In fact,
there is no one on this planet exactly like you.
When we understand our uniqueness and embrace it with confidence,
(00:44):
we soon realize that we are in a league of
our own. We don't feel the need to compare ourselves
to other people because the reality is you can compare
something that is one of a kind. For example, if
a clothing designer made only one item in every collection
that was never made before, can that item be compared
to anything else ever made when it's one of a kind. Similarly,
(01:05):
you are one of a kind. It cannot be compared
to anyone else. Making your mission today to start embracing
the uniqueness and walk with the confidence that you were
born special, with the ability to positively contribute to the
world in your own unique way. As Holly Hinton quotes,
know that you are unique and special, and that the
universe is a better place for having you in it.
(01:26):
Next up on the show, we have Kaila Cordone from
the hit Netflix real estate show Selling OC. Kaila, thank
you so much for being on the show today. How
are you doing.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Yeah, I'm great. Thank you so much for having me.
I'm excited to be here.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
Well, thank you for being here. I'm a big fan
of the show. And before we get into the success
of Selling OC and your success, I want to take
it back to the beginning. I know that things weren't
always so easy for you. I know that you had
an unplanned pregnancy at the age of seventeen. So tell
us about that experience and what it taught you about
life everything.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Yeah, it was very, very harsh, but you know, at
the age of seventeen, living in the shelters, being disowned
by your family, not being accepted, you know, father of
my child, cheating on me, getting another woman pregnant at
the same time. I mean, you can only imagine what
(02:18):
that does to a seventeen eighteen year old little girl
that had no life experience, and it was, you know,
the darkest time in my life.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
But I just someone else asked me the other day.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
Like, if you could go back to that girl, what
would you say or what would you change? And the
only thing that I would tell her is You're going
to be okay. Everything is going to be okay. And no,
there is nothing that I would change because it brought
me to the woman that I am today, and I
could not be any more proud.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
Yeah, I was gonna say.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
The reason I brought it up as well is because
I feel that these are the kind of experiences that
make us tougher, that really shape us into who we
are today. Right, So that's why. So how do you
think that experience shaped you into who you are today
in terms of learning about yourself?
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Well, I was a child. I was forced to grow
up very quickly. I basically grew up with my son,
he's now seventeen.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
And.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
You know, it shapes me who I am. I mean,
I'm extremely resilient. I mean living on the streets that alone,
by itself, you can literally take everything away from me,
all my money, all my material things, everything, and throw
me on the streets with absolutely nothing, and I guarantee you.
Speaker 4 (03:40):
Give me a couple hours, I'll be right back on my.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Feet, like there's nothing you can throw at me that
I cannot handle and figure out. But that's one of many,
many things. And my testimony is helping people. In fact,
it's saving lives. So I think everybody has a story
as long as you use it to help others.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
And I learned that as well.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
There's so much value.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
There's so much power, and that so much value, So
I mean, we could be here all day.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
It really just.
Speaker 5 (04:14):
Has completely changed me completely.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
And that journey led you into real estate. What kind
of sparked your passion for real estate?
Speaker 4 (04:23):
I didn't have a passion for real estate.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
In fact, before real estate, I was in the beauty
industry for ten years, so I was in the service industry.
Started off as a cosmetology. Is realized I'm really not
that great with women's hair. I try to act like
I was, but women's hair and makeup. I did that
for weddings, events, private events, you know, things like that.
And then I thought, you know, let me just get
(04:47):
into men's hair, and I realized I actually have a
talent for men's hair. I have a very good eye
for detail, and I'm a creative.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
I'm very like hands on.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
I'm good with, you know, seeing detail in my hands,
and I'm a painter, you.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Know, things like that.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
But so when I was literally I just remembered that
exact moment when I was cutting one of my client's hair. Oh,
I went from a cosmetolergis to a barber. Sorry, I
didn't finish that part. So I was barbering and I
was also bar attending. So I've always been in the
service industries.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
I've tried it all.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
I mean, we would be here all day if I'd
told you everything that I've done. But I you know,
tried to going to college that didn't work out. But
I just remember sitting cutting hair one day and my
hands were hurting, my back was hurting, my feet were
hurting from standing all day, and I just remember thinking,
(05:41):
this cannot be it, This cannot be it for me.
And so no joke, it was just a random like
me and my girlfriend were talking, We're like, yeah, I
was actually thinking again in my real estate license. And
then my clients tell would tell me you would be
really good if as a realtor, and I'm like, huh,
Like at this time, I didn't even have a laptop.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
I didn't even know how to use Gmail.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
I wrote all my schedules all like everything, all my
appointments in a notebook.
Speaker 4 (06:11):
I was really old school. I wrote everything down. So
they're like, you would be good as a real drum.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
I'm like, I don't know anything. Nobody in my family's
in real estate. And so I was like, you know what,
let me just give my license with my.
Speaker 5 (06:22):
Girlfriend for fun and see what happens.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
And so I took my my I went through it
through that, I took my test and I passed the
first time.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
Now that's a really.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Important detail because I cannot take tests to save my life.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
I have major add ADHD.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Like I can't like sit and focus like on pieces
of paper like it just it was a nightmare. It
was the longest, worst three hours of my life.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
But I passed.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
So I took it as a sign like I should
probably do something with this. So, while I was still
cutting hair, I found a job through a friend of
a friend of a friend and started assisting a top
producer and so I made a percentage off of what
he was making. Now he's a top producer, so he
(07:14):
was making good money. And I started seeing money and
never seen before, and I'm like, hold on, this is I.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
Could do this. I could totally do this.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
I mean I was having twelve fifteen hour days. I
was dragged through the mud. Like that's the best way
to learn for anyone that's watching, that's looking to get
into real estate or just got your license, to find
someone to be their assistant and be hands all being
in the field, do the open houses, do the like
you have to be hands on sitting in a classroom
(07:46):
taking notes and that's not your teacher or anything. So
I did that for almost a year, and so I
slowly started getting rid of my hair client tell about
I was saying while I was assisting, I was still
bartending as well. But then I got to a point
(08:07):
where I was ready to be my own agent, and so.
Speaker 4 (08:11):
You know, fast forward.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
I mean, there was a lot of challenges in between
that time, but I finally became an agent on that
same team, and six months in that's when Netflix reached out.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
Wow, and fast forward, Kila, You're one of the cast
members in selling oc on Netflix. Tell us about that
experience and was it intimidating knowing that your career would
be out there for the world to see.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
It was definitely intimidating, And the reason being is because
I knew I was a newer agent in comparison to
some of the other agents, and so there was a
lot of pressure. You know that before joining the Appenheim Group,
my highest sale was one point six million, and the
(09:02):
team I was on wasn't in the luxury space, and
so I didn't have tons of experience.
Speaker 5 (09:10):
But I knew how much of a hard worker I was.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
I knew how knowledgeable I was, and so I just
allowed that to kind of guide.
Speaker 4 (09:19):
Me and just keep on learning along the way.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
Because if there's one thing I can do based on
all my life experiences is that I know how to
adapt and I know how to adapt quickly.
Speaker 4 (09:31):
So that has really helped me.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
It was it was tough when going through Season one filming,
you know, and for knowing that it's out there in
the world forever. It was a very dark time in
my life. And while I was filming Season one, you know,
most of the time I was blacked out, drunk, and
so I was dealing with a lot of personal things
(09:58):
in my life that the show did not come but
it's because I just didn't share that with the show.
It was all personal stuff, and so, you know, people
didn't understand what I was going through at the time.
You know, I lost family members, I wasn't doing well financially, like,
it was tons of different things, and so you guys
(10:18):
got to see that side, you know, and I'm not
but but the thing that I am proud about is
watching season one and then two and three, you are
really truly able to see the growth. And I think
that's incredibly important because regardless of everything, there's one promise
(10:43):
that I made to myself, and that was to be
my real, true, authentic self no matter what.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
And the viewers could all agree to that.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
You know, they see through the bull crap and they
were able to see how I've always been since day one,
and that's something that is never going to change.
Speaker 4 (11:05):
Absolutely.
Speaker 1 (11:06):
You were definitely one of my favorite people on the
show because of that. And the one thing I really
stuck out about you is your resilience and determination. Whether
it was in your personal life or it was people
underestimating you, you always prove them wrong. So talk about that,
talk about how you use determination as your superpower.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
You know what I've been told my entire life, I
was not good enough, strong enough, like smart enough, worthy enough,
deserving enough.
Speaker 5 (11:35):
I mean, I've been hearing that my entire life, and
I think.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
It was you know, obviously for me, now that I.
Speaker 4 (11:43):
Look back at it, that was all preparation for this.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
You know, it's I don't think a lot of the
cast members understand what I've been through. I mean, I've
shared my story, but not as deep as I share
it now, like on my social media and now I
brought back my podcast and I and I talk a
lot about it. But the cast members did not know
(12:09):
who Kayla Cardona was.
Speaker 4 (12:12):
So so you.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
Know, I think when they saw who she was, because
season three, I can definitely say was the most.
Speaker 5 (12:22):
Accurate, uh like it.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
Was, it showed it showed me more accurately in comparison
to season one and two. And so you know when
it showed people just talking crap about me behind my back,
and notice it's always behind my back, it's never in
my face.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
And they still continue to do that.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
Which is fine, you know whatever, but it you know,
it's they want to hate me so bad. I can't
tell you why, because if you if you sit down
with those people, people that are talking nasty about me,
and ask them, what did Kayla do to you?
Speaker 4 (13:05):
Why do you hate her so much? They won't be
able to give you a straight answer.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
They'll walk around the answer, or they'll beat it around
the bush. They'll never be able to give it to
you because I've never done or said anything close to
what they have.
Speaker 5 (13:19):
Said or done to me.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
So that's number one. But I just stayed focus, and
I said, I'm no longer.
Speaker 5 (13:27):
Going to allow the noise to affect me.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
And I just stayed away from all of that because
as you guys can see, you know, like in season one,
I really did care about being liked. I mean, I
think it was you know, all of us really getting
to know each other. And I'm like, regardless of what
I've been through, i still try to see the best
(13:55):
in everybody. And I used to be like, oh I
hate that, I'm like that. Now now I'm just like,
I love that. I'm like that, you know, and I
will never change that part about me. I do see
the best in everybody. And so there was things that
I saw in others that I thought was more real,
(14:16):
and come to find out it was just acting and
it was just fake and there were a lot, you know,
some of them were being fake friends to me, and
I had to accept that for what it was. And so,
as you guys can see, in season three, I just
stopped caring. I was like, I'm just going to focus
on me and look what that did.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
You know, absolutely, we do see that transition from you
being very vulnerable in the first season to later on
in season three really just owning who you are. And
I want to talk about one of your big milestones.
You sold a twenty four point five million dollar house
on the show. Congratulations by the way, talk to us
about that milestone and really what it meant for you
professionally and personally.
Speaker 4 (14:57):
Yeah, I mean it was hard.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
What they didn't show you is the long amount of time,
months and months and months.
Speaker 4 (15:05):
Of getting the owners to sign the listing agreement.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
So the it was a referral from a friend, and.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
He did not know about the show, and so when,
of course, when you're getting ready to pick an agent,
because there was other agents trying to get this listing,
of course, and so when he went to go look
up the show he then watched the show, and so
when he watched the show, he went back to me
(15:44):
and he said, I don't like your character character and
I was like, okay, like I hear you, I understand.
And so I had to kind of break it down
to him, like the show is for entertainment, otherwise we
want to have a show.
Speaker 4 (16:00):
So, right, if we showed all the.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
Boring stuff, I mean, everything you see on the show
is very glamorized.
Speaker 4 (16:08):
Obviously, you got.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
The hair, you got the makeup, you got the events,
and all the things like that is like one percent
of the real estate industry.
Speaker 4 (16:19):
I mean, so they're not going to show the boring stuff.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
Right, So I kind of had to, you know, have
those conversations with him prove myself because he straight up
did ask me what was your highest sale and I
told him at that time was five million, and so
I've never sold anything in double digits like that, let
(16:44):
alone twenty four. At the time, we listed it for
just under twenty eight million. So, long story short, it
took a lot of patients, a lot.
Speaker 5 (16:54):
Of time, a lot of communication.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
And at the time when I was trying to get
this listing, we were filming season two and so I
when we're filming, we're filming four days a week and
those days are all day. So I had to also
bring on someone, another agent in the office that was
not on the cast, to help me to answer the
(17:21):
call if I can't because I'm filming and I can't
answer the phone, you know, things like that.
Speaker 4 (17:25):
So it was a whole thing. It was a whole mission.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
And then on top of that, he wanted me to
do in a charity event, which I've never thrown a
charity event before in my life, but I know how
to fill a room and so I was fully confident
that easy. And we did throw an event and I
helped his nonprofit raise one hundred excuse.
Speaker 4 (17:52):
Me, I'm not going to say it online. I don't
know for life, but six figures. And so he was
very happy that.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
So, you know, it was a whole process.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
And so I think another piece of that was his
wife has a very.
Speaker 4 (18:11):
Similar story to me.
Speaker 2 (18:13):
So she too was a teenage mom was disowned by
her family.
Speaker 4 (18:18):
So it was it was a lot of different things.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
And so he basically said, Kaila, I know that once
you sell this property is going to change your life
and your career. And I'm like, yeah, it is, it is,
and so he was like, I'm ruining for you. I
want you to sell it and I said okay, And
I had six months to sell this and literally sold
it on the eleventh hour.
Speaker 4 (18:40):
Wow, all cash closed in ten days.
Speaker 1 (18:42):
Amazing. Congratulations. That's a big deal considering that you know
you went into this, I mean, not being a real
estate agent, joining the open sorry Openheim Group, and then
selling a twenty four million dollar house. That's amazing. So congratulations,
Thank you, and Kaila. I created my platform to inspire
and to uplift anyone that's to show success stories like yours.
So I want to ask you, what's one mantra you
(19:04):
live your life by and how would you apply it
for someone watching that you know might be needing abusive inspiration.
Speaker 4 (19:16):
Mantra? I don't really have a mantra, but.
Speaker 5 (19:21):
I just remind myself who I am.
Speaker 4 (19:24):
I think a lot of people.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
Struggle with fear and in whatever it is, like, fear
of not being good enough and not being worthy. We
all are, and I think reminding people that we're one
of one. There's nobody out there that is exactly like us,
(19:47):
even if you have a twin, right, we're all so
different in our own ways, and just remembering.
Speaker 4 (19:57):
That we do we are deserve and you can do it.
Speaker 5 (20:03):
But you've got to push through because people are going
to not believe in you.
Speaker 4 (20:11):
People are going to.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
Actually, in fact, go out of their way to tear
you down and tell you why you can't do it.
And as you guys can see on season three, that's
what I was surrounded by. But I said, Nope, I'm
not going to listen to that. I know I can
do this, and I'm going to work really, really, really hard,
and I'm going to stay consistent and I'm going to
stay focused and look at the outcome. Yeah, you know,
(20:35):
everyone else around you can wish and hope that you fail,
But as long as you just believe in yourself, that's
that's really.
Speaker 4 (20:43):
All that matters. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (20:45):
I love that I talk about synergy because at the
beginning of my show, I talk about how we're all
in a league of our own, that you can't compare
something or someone to like we're all there's no one
on the planet like each and every one of us, right,
all you neque and so if you can't compare something
that's never been done before created, So I think It's
(21:06):
interesting that you said remind yourself of who you are,
because I think that's so important sometimes in life, as
you said, with fear and all of these things. But
when you remind yourself of who you are and you
kind of tap into your personal power, that's when amazing
things happen and you just become unstoppable. So I love
that and we see that with you in season three.
Kil I want to talk about you know, you're a
successful agent, but you also are a motivational speaker. I
(21:28):
know we were talking about you going to the Philippines, So
can you share with us a little bit about your trip.
Speaker 4 (21:33):
Yes, thank you so much for asking me about that.
Speaker 2 (21:35):
I just joined Alta Gracia Mission, which is a nonprofit
organization that teaches people and trains people to go on
these missions and help share the gospel. And so we
are leaving to the Philippines from August ninth to August
twentieth to for a week, We're going to be feeding
(21:56):
the children. We're going to be hosting an event for
or the pastors and the leaders out there to best
equip them, and then also a two day free event
for the Philippines people to come and receive healing and
love and words from from the Bible and Jesus, and
(22:19):
I'm really really excited to be a part of it.
And it's something I've never done before, so I'm really
really excited.
Speaker 4 (22:28):
I actually just.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
Posted all my social media on my Facebook Facebook.
Speaker 4 (22:34):
I don't even use use Instagram. There we go Instagram,
you guys will see.
Speaker 2 (22:41):
I have a highlights in my stories and it's posted
on the speed of the donation link. So we are
doing a fundraiser next week, but we do have a
donation link, and then it's also tax deductibles. So it's
great because I know, I'm sure a lot of your
viewers are you know, business owners entrepreneurs. So but yeah,
(23:02):
I'm really really excited. It's something that I've been praying for.
Because yes, I'm a life coach and I help my
clients and my breakthrough community. I have my podcast, which
I bring a lot of value from having other guests
and things like that, and then of course I'm a
motivational speaker and I speak on events. But there is
(23:22):
nothing like actually going out there physically and helping these
women and children that is just so fulfilling for my
heart and I just I believe that this is what
I'm meant to be doing.
Speaker 4 (23:35):
That's amazing.
Speaker 1 (23:36):
Well, I hope you have an amazing trip. We'll link
that information so where our viewers can also get involved.
But congratulations Kyla and all your success. Thank you for
being on the show today and we hope to have
you back soon.
Speaker 4 (23:47):
Thank you so much for having me.
Speaker 5 (23:48):
I can't wait till next time.
Speaker 1 (23:49):
