Chris Lawrence and Tom Bragger here. Chris, you're more excited
when I said biscuits and gravy.
Speaker 6 (02:31):
Right, Yeah, I'm I'm thinking about sticking around. Did she
bring any.
Speaker 5 (02:35):
Uh well at the event's not till November the eighth.
They're trying to get people. The question still stands. I
was a judge last year. I was a judge for
the Biscuits and Gravy last year.
Speaker 6 (02:44):
Yeah, it would be hard for me to judge because
I've eaten the greatest biscuits and gravy of all, and
it would be all well paling comparison.
Speaker 5 (02:50):
But my mom, I was gonna say, what member of
your family, And.
Speaker 6 (02:52):
My mama made the biscuits and gravy and it would
be hard to ever fund and the need that would
beat that.
Speaker 5 (02:58):
So mine would be my late mother in law. She
made some pretty dang good biscuits and gravy. She hated me,
but boy, she would make biscuits and gravy.
Speaker 7 (03:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
I had a great grandma, old granny brag. Those were
the best, were the biscuits and gravy.
Speaker 5 (03:11):
It's somebody's great And I think what happens is your
biscuits and gravy suck until you get to be like
sixty years old. And then when a person I don't
even say a woman, because sometimes some men can make
some good biscuits and gravy too, but once they get
to be sixty, now suddenly your biscuits and gravy either.
Speaker 6 (03:25):
Well, that's because you've made it every day for the
past four decades and you've gotten it wrong as much
as you possibly can, so you'll get it right every time. Now, Yeah,
all right, the same thing with cornbread. Mom, said the
same thing about cornbread.
Speaker 5 (03:37):
Yeah, let's talk about high school football right now, Chris Lawrence,
you are going to be in the land of the
generals tonight as Winfield to take on Nitro should be
a good one.
Speaker 6 (03:46):
Yeah, number seven Nitro at number ten win Field. A big,
a very important game for both these teams as far
as postseason implications and seating, and a fairly evenly matched game,
one would think. But you might give Nitro the edge
just because they've got a few more skill guys than
Hurricane does. But uh, but but Hurricane, but Hurricane Winfield
(04:08):
don't get that one. Yeah, exactly when Winfield has proven
that they can hang with anybody, and they will and
they will bring the hammer when they have to. So
that should be interesting tonight to uh to get them
together and see what happens. All right, and they be
on the air as well at six point thirty and
the kickoff is at seven o'clock.
Speaker 5 (04:26):
You and who it's a.
Speaker 6 (04:29):
Surprise that's gonna I've got I've got a surprise for
you on the uh on the program tonight, see our
sports department, because you know, w has got homecoming going on,
so we've got people there Marshall's off this week, so uh,
we're we're kind of moving all kinds of folks around.
I think the football blitz today that I do as
part of Metro News Midday, I think I'm going to
(04:51):
get to Woody Woods to do that with me today.
Well that ought to be fit that he could. He's
as qualified as anyone else. It just means, what do
you have to get out of bed before for three o'clock?
Speaker 5 (05:01):
All right? What you got on in West Virginia outdoors tomorrow?
Speaker 6 (05:04):
I've got, Uh, I've got about four different stories of
people that killed nice bucks, and I think I'm gonna
go with those tomorrow. I've kind of been holding them,
holding them back in my in reserve, but I think
I'm just gonna fire them all tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (05:16):
Where are we in as far as I rely on
you stuff for this kind of stuff, As far as
the seasons go right now? What seasons are we in?
What are we looking forward? I mean, I know obviously
buck season will be coming up later, Deer season, I
should say, but yeah, what what's in season?
Speaker 6 (05:31):
Archery season is underway obviously for for everything. I think
the fall Turkey season opened last weekend. I was on vacation,
so I can't remember. I think fall turkey season opened.
I do in the spring a little bit, but not
very much because you can only turkey hunt from daylight
till one o'clock and that's when I work. That's the
(05:56):
same schedule I work, so I don't get to do
it very often. But I have before, and I've killed
a few over the years, not many. I know a
couple buddies of mind their turkey hunters. I mean they're
just hardcore about it and they love. There's something different
I guess about turkey hunting.
Speaker 5 (06:09):
I don't know what.
Speaker 6 (06:09):
Well, it's the communication with another animal and the fact
that you have to draw them in very close, and
when they're when they're still gobbling, and they're literally from
here to that window and I'm talking to ten feet
and then they gobble. I mean, it makes the hair
in your armstand. It's really exciting, and because any sudden
(06:30):
movement will spook them and the whole thing will be
over right, so you've got it. It's it's it's a
lot more intimate than say deer hunting with a rifle,
where you can kill something one hundred yards away or more.
Bow hunting is kind of like that too, because you
draw them in so close, and that's one of the
allures of it to so many people.
Speaker 5 (06:47):
So just have a good broadcast. Tonight should be a
good one between the Wildcats and the Generals. And we'll
be listening to West Virginia Outdoors tomorrow morning. So that's
good man, I appreciate it. Never know what those turkeys
are going to say. Speaking to which you's Tom Bragg. Hey,
mister Bragg, of course will he'll have the coverage tonight.
You're going to Frankfurt, right, Yeah, long trip for Herbert
Hoover today. We're making the trip originally about three and
a half hours from Charleston. This should be a This
(07:08):
is one of the premier matchups on the schedule.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
Yeah, I think on paper it's absolutely that you look
at just the resumes of both of these teams. Hoover
comes in at six and one. It's only lost was
to double A number one Independence, that's kind of established
itself as the team to beat in Double A and
they've taken that mantle maybe from this Frankfort team that
Hoover's going up to play the Falcons undefeated this year.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
They think it's twenty.
Speaker 5 (07:30):
Two games win Street going.
Speaker 4 (07:32):
They were undefeated last year and won the Double A title,
and they haven't lonched yet this year. I think what
a lot of people are looking at in this game
is just the strength of the competition that Frankfort has
been playing. They're undefeated, but they haven't faced anything like
this Hoover team. That's no disrespect to the teams on
their schedule. This Hoover team's playing at another level right now,
and I think it should be a really good game.
These are two teams highly ranked in their classes. Hoover
(07:53):
comes in at number three in Class Triple A this week.
Frankfort at number two behind that Independence team in Double
a's going to have to give. I think both nobody's
playing to get into the playoffs in this game. Both
of these teams are going to be playoff teams, but
it's about where they're going to fall in that bracket
right now. I think in Double A, you want to
get that number two seed if you can. I don't
think they'll be able to jump Independance if they were
to win this game, but you don't want to fall
(08:14):
back into that part of the bracket where you might
have to go play at Independence Cole City is a
tough place to play Ascouver.
Speaker 5 (08:20):
From earlier this year exactly, and for.
Speaker 4 (08:22):
Hoover, similar you want to get those wins against I mean,
the way the playoff system works, playing down in Double A,
it's not always great. But if you're going to you've
got to play good teams that are going out and
winning a bunch of games. And I think Frankfurt fits
that bill. It would be a great feather in Hoover's
had as far as positioning itself in the playoffs to
get this one under their belt. So should be a
good one. We're on the air a little bit before seven.
We don't do much of a pre game. We do
(08:43):
about five to ten minutes kickoffs at seven, so we'll
be on about six fifty five six fifty on ninety
six one KWS.
Speaker 5 (08:48):
All right, we'll be listening. I do appreciate it. Thanks
thanks a lot. And State's playing in Florida.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
Yeah, State's at West Florida, which is one of the
dominant teams in D two this year where they're on
the road. We're not covering that one, but they're back
in institute next week and we'll have that on the beat.
Speaker 5 (09:03):
All right, Tom Bragg save travels. Thank you, sir. Enjoy
beautiful downtown Frankfort. Always have you been there? It is?
Speaker 4 (09:09):
I've not been to a game at Frankfort. I've been
to one at Kaiser, which has also in a similar space.
But I've been to Frankfort High School before, just not
for a football game, so it will be my first time.
Speaker 5 (09:18):
We're back on the food well always.
Speaker 4 (09:20):
We gotta update the spreadsheet for the West Virginia High
School concession stand hot dog database.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
Hey, so we got it.
Speaker 5 (09:27):
We gotta get that one off the list. I appreciate it, buddy,
Thanks a lot. Have a good game and good broadcast tonight.
All right, let's switch gears here more. By the way,
do you need to let you know? It's the Dave
Island Show in five Any Lives, brought you apart by
Morgan to Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. Angie Gillenwater
is here from the Canage Charles New Main Association with
this week's Adopt Me Please Better the week. Oh Angie,
Good morning and welcome to the show.
Speaker 7 (09:48):
Good morning, it's a chilli one today.
Speaker 5 (09:50):
It is a chili one.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
You know.
Speaker 5 (09:51):
I'll tell you an interesting to tell you the listeners.
A real funny story is last night I was doing
a live broadcast on her sister station, KWS and it
was over in Putnam County where I lived. So I
just took the KWS truck home last night. And I'm
kind of spoiled by having a garage. Okay, So this
morning I wake up and walk out to get the
get the newspaper and whatever, and I was thinking, I'm
(10:13):
gonna have to either scrape or let this big truck
run because this truck will not fit. And I left
my car at the station and I took the truck home.
I said, this truck will not fit in my garage.
So I said, do I want to scrape it or
do I want to let it run? So sorry WVRC
Media Charleston and the gas bill. I decided to let
it run for about ten minutes. It's a big truck too,
(10:36):
and you know, and I'm not a big guy, at
least not in height, so you know, if I could
get the whole thing to get it scraped, all right,
I want to ask you before we get into the
pet of the Week, which by the way, is always
pictures posted on Dave Island Radio and Facebook, the WCCHS
network Facebook page and also at dave A seventy on X.
How do the event go? At Dutch Miller last week?
Speaker 7 (10:56):
Oh, that event was so successful. We had sixty six
options and there are still a couple pets out in
Foster to adopt that the people over at Dutch Miller
have agreed to pay for their adoption fees should the
families decide to adopt them. So we're looking at potentially
I think seventy six adoptions should all of them adopt.
Speaker 5 (11:16):
Hats off to the folks at Dutch Miller, and again,
you know, they're great community partners on this thing, and
I had Chris Miller on a couple of weeks ago
to talk about it. But I also want to say
big shout outs on the corporate level to Subaru because
this is something that Dutch Miller does, but super U
does this nationwide and so a big props to the
folks of the super Rou corporation as well.
Speaker 7 (11:37):
Absolutely, they actually had created small like Welcome Home Puppy
and Welcome Home Kitty goodie bags for adopters there and
they have like little tiny stuff Subero's in them. Super cute,
very cute.
Speaker 5 (11:49):
All right, Let's get to our pet of the week.
A picture posted as I said, Dave aland Radio on
Facebook and at Dave a seventy on x also the
WCCHS network Facebook page. Skycop is our cat this week.
Tell us about Skycop So Skycopp is a bit older.
Speaker 7 (12:05):
I would say he's probably around five to six years old,
but he is one of the sweetest cats that I
have met. And I know I say that about a
lot of them, but he truly has stolen my heart.
He was at the dust miller of it and sadly
did not get adopted. So we took him to Southbridge
cat Co where he's currently waiting. If you stop by,
he'll probably see him rolling around in catnip and his
(12:26):
kennel because he loved catnip. But he's just one of
the sweetest cats. With all those dogs barking and all
the visitors in our caravan trailer, he just like sat
there wanted to be held. He did not get stressed.
Speaker 5 (12:40):
Well, I mean, Angie, he's stoned. That's the reason.
Speaker 7 (12:43):
Why there was there was no catnip by that event.
Speaker 5 (12:47):
Okay, all right, so he went clean that day, huh,
all right?
Speaker 7 (12:50):
Absolutely, it's over for Dutchman.
Speaker 5 (12:52):
It's a beautiful like a beautiful, beautiful cat. And again
I urge you to go over and take a look
at the picture. And it was funny because you sent
me the picture last night. And I want to clarify
this because the way that the pictures taken, he's half
in of his little cat playhouse and half out. So
I had to ask you, does he have all of
his legs because in the picture it doesn't looks like
he's missing an appendage or two, but he is not.
Speaker 7 (13:14):
You tell me, yeah, he has all appendages, all eyeballs, like,
all body parts are there except for the trouble puffs
because he has been neutered.
Speaker 5 (13:22):
So what hold on, hold on? What what did you
call him?
Speaker 7 (13:27):
Trouble Puffs is still one of our volunteers, Jude to
take care of him.
Speaker 5 (13:31):
My gosh, Angie, you're gonna get us both fired here
saying and I'll let you and I'll let you repeat it.
That's that's the bad thing about it, Lordy Mercy. Okay,
uh tell me about the name, uh sky Cop?
Speaker 7 (13:44):
Yeah? So Skycop is actually a vanity license plate that
I saw sitting in traffic and a lot of our
shelter animals currently are starting to be named after that
because some people in our state have really good vanity license.
Speaker 5 (13:58):
Okay, there you go.
Speaker 7 (13:59):
The SKUYP is simply just a license plate.
Speaker 5 (14:02):
Just know when you go to renew that plate that
it may end up being the name of a cat
or a dog. Here from a gnaw Charlest New Main Association.
Speaker 7 (14:09):
I like it.
Speaker 5 (14:10):
I like Skycott quickly, what do you need of up there?
What's the what do you need?
Speaker 7 (14:16):
So we're actually it's still the same things, blankets, towul sheets,
all that good stuff. But I know a lot of
our cleaning supplies are running low, so like bleach, dish washing, liquid,
laundry detergent. That is kind of on the more important
side now. But of course we will take anything that
is pet related and make use of it.
Speaker 5 (14:34):
You guys out and about anywhere.
Speaker 7 (14:37):
Today we'll be at City National Bank in Kanall City
from eleven am to three pm. And tomorrow we'll be
at Clayton Holmes, the one that's near South Ridge. We'll
be there from eleven to four with the caravan and
adoptable pets.
Speaker 5 (14:52):
All right, hey, Angie, I appreciate it and We'll talk
again next week and you can drop another graphics street
term for parts next week. We appreciate it.
Speaker 7 (15:02):
All right, have a good one, Thank you.
Speaker 5 (15:04):
Nine twenty two and again our pet is posted Dave
Island Radio and Facebook, WCHS network Facebook page and at
Dave a seventy on X. It's skycop five year old
cat Newter, vaccinated microchip, living his best life out of
the Petco penhouse at Southridge. Very very sweet cat. Probably
would be okay around dogs kids. This, I mean a
(15:26):
beautiful cat. I'm gonna talk Stephanie, our producer. I think
it had taken this one. If not, Stephanie Leah in
our office will take it because Leah Leah's boyfriend is
the one that we have to then we have to watch.
He's the one that wants to adopt all the cats.
But he's a beautiful cat. Go check out his picture
at the social media sites and let's try to get
this cat adopt him. Nine to twenty three of a

(18:30):
I want to talk about Biscuits and Gravy right now.
Second annual Biscuits and Gravy Ball coming to Capital Market
on November the eighth. Joanna Romeo's here. How you doing, Joanna?
Welcome back to the show.
Speaker 10 (18:39):
Good Mari, I'm good.
Speaker 5 (18:40):
And Tom's here, Tom Rommi your last name again mcgag,
Tom mcmay. And so last year this thing, somebody had
an idea, Tom, was it your idea? Was it your idea?
It was a Joanna, was it Yourea? It was your
idea and I was lucky enough to be able to
be a judge last year. Had a great time saying
how many biscuits and gravy combos that we have last year?
Do you remember?
Speaker 3 (18:59):
I think?
Speaker 10 (19:00):
But I think we have like nine. There's one person
that didn't do it. Biscuit and gravy.
Speaker 5 (19:04):
Okay, we at last year. It was all good and
we want to have more this year. It's November the
eighth over at to Capital Market and this is a fundraiser.
Talk about where the funds go for this.
Speaker 11 (19:14):
So for South Ridge Church, we do a lot of
different programs in the community and our real goal is
that we want to be a church that our community
can't live without. So we have a number of programs
that we work with. We work closely with the Women's
Addiction Recovery Center on the West Side, and we do
(19:34):
facilitate meals for four different grade schools during the Christmas
holiday when kids go home, oftentimes they don't have meals,
so we provide meals for the full family for over
one hundred and twenty five families. We work in partner
with another church for the Bread of Life food pantry
in South Ridge. We partner with Allen Creek Elementary Center
(19:59):
to help them with some of their community programs. We
feed the provide dinner for the UC football team before
their home games. So a lot of outreach events are
programs like that.
Speaker 5 (20:11):
Yeah, and that's what I want to make sure people understand.
You guys do great things in the community outside the church.
And obviously you do things that you would associate with
a church, but you also do a lot of things
for people that don't necessarily go to your church. That's
what I'm trying to get at. Yeah, and that's why
I think this is such a great idea. So where
did the idea come from? Join How did you get
this idea to do a biscuit and break a gravy competition?
Speaker 12 (20:32):
So my background's nonprofit and fundraising. So I got to
actually attend an event called the Biscuit and Gravy Bowl
in Ashland, Kentucky, back in twenty nineteen and so it
was a bunch of nonprofit set up and that's where
I got the idea.
Speaker 10 (20:43):
And I was like, well, why didn't Charleston have a
breakfast event?
Speaker 5 (20:47):
Yeah, And so it's going to be on November the
eighth over Capital Market and you're putting the call out
to who do you want to enter the competition?
Speaker 12 (20:54):
I mean, so we got a good list if I
give him a shout out. So right now we have
Sam's Uptown Cafe, Back Bricks and Barrels, Sleepy Hollow Golf Club,
Coco's Kitchen, Chick fil A, Hagi's, Sima's Restaurant, Carver Culinary
Arts and Munch and Malt Cadrian. They're also known as
a Porte Cafe, so he's also participating in that name.
Speaker 5 (21:16):
And you guys have already got I think, just basically
what you said to think you got more than last.
Speaker 12 (21:20):
Year at fifteen. And we have five individuals and the
radio station got a couple. Dusty Thompson, I want to
give him a shout out, and then Cheryl Mantel and
Joe Romeo from last year he got second place for
Romeo's Grabies coming back, Paul Ronk and Linda mcpain.
Speaker 5 (21:33):
So how does that work as far as the professional
so to speak? And the others tell me how that
how that division?
Speaker 12 (21:39):
So everyone coming is professionals almost. We only have a
few that are sign up as want to be so
we're still taking sign ups. Want to be Yeah, that's
just individuals at Arn't restaurants and they just want to participate.
Speaker 5 (21:49):
But there are two different categories they are okay, okay,
because sometimes it might be seen is a little unfair
to have somebody who, you know, you mentioned PG for example,
somebody who every weekend does that supposed to somebody who
isn't quote unquote trained. But I'm gonna tell you we
were talking earlier. You know, I had Chris Lawrence and
here and Tom Braggs. I had about high school fotball.
Chris talked about his mom's being the best. Tom talked
(22:11):
about his his granny, Granny Braggs being the best. Best
I've ever had was my late mother in law. So
I'll put him up against any any diner and or
dive out.
Speaker 11 (22:23):
There, lots of you know that. That's the interesting thing
is that the variety of the way people prepare it,
you know, the gravy, the biscuits. It's just it's really
interesting that everything's different.
Speaker 5 (22:39):
And it's something I think it's kind of interesting, something
that we all grew up eating around here. I don't
know where you guys are from originally, but here from
Ashley Okay, that goes without saying Tom Okay. So we
all grew up eating. And Stephanie, our producer, is also
an alum Creek person, so she's she's all about biscuits
and gravy as well. But there's somebody it's such a
(23:01):
simple food, but it's also there's so many different ways
to make it, you know, and uh, and being from
southern West Virginia, I would say that most of the
people's biscuits and gravy that I grew up eating, Uh,
we're pretty much the same couple. Different ingredients, but there's
different ways and people people go about it differently they do.
Speaker 11 (23:22):
It's you know, different meats, different types of sausage, different
basis for the gravy.
Speaker 3 (23:27):
And I love it.
Speaker 11 (23:28):
It's uh, I'm a fan. Yeah, I truly enjoy it.
That's one experience that my wife and I had. We
were on a cruise several years ago and we decided
to go to dining. It was a cold morning, we
were gonna We went to the dining room and on
the menu they had biscuits and gravy, sausage gravy.
Speaker 5 (23:46):
And we were excited. It's like, oh, yeah, I'm back
home again, and so.
Speaker 11 (23:50):
They brought it and it was just a white, tasteless
gravy with a sausage link laid in the middle.
Speaker 5 (23:57):
And that's what you know what that is. That's straight
up common munism. That's exactly what that is. But it
is different. And even places that you go in Appalatchua
or the South can be a little bit different. I mean,
the biscuits and gravy, and I'm talking about the true South,
you know, in Georgia and the Carolinas can be a
little bit different than what it is here in West
(24:17):
Virginia in Kentucky. But I'll tell you what it is,
and that's delicious. It's absolutely delicious. Now, so for people
that are thinking about entering, talking about individuals, so how
much do they need to make how do they get involved?
Is there a deadline? Talk about that joint.
Speaker 12 (24:33):
Yeah, I mean as far as the deadline to go
on Dave event signage, we need it probably a week
prior to the event if they want to be included
on the day of event signage for the contenders, but
we'll take.
Speaker 10 (24:40):
Them up to the day of, ok.
Speaker 5 (24:42):
And how much do they need to plan on bringing?
Speaker 12 (24:43):
So I'm telling everybody planning to do five to six
hundred servings, but only one to two out servings, So
that's about one hundred and twenty five biscuits and a
crock pot of gravy.
Speaker 5 (24:53):
Crock pot of gravy. That was the same of my
third album, Day Out Alive, the crock Pot of Gravy,
and and last year it was a lot of fun
and I think I was I judged last year. I
think was Rob from KWS involved last year. Radio people
are always jumping in on stuff off it's free food
involved because I've done chili, I've done mac and cheese
and all these other different things. But do you still
(25:14):
need judges? No, we are full full up on judgment.
Speaker 12 (25:17):
I was easy.
Speaker 5 (25:17):
Am I judge? Am I judged this year? You are okay?
Speaker 7 (25:19):
Cool?
Speaker 11 (25:20):
All right?
Speaker 5 (25:20):
I just want to want to make sure and I
do want to to stress too that as with most
reputable food competitions, we don't know who we're judging. All
we do is we get a number, so people can't say, well,
you know this guy, you know this lady, and that's
why they won. That's we get a number. This is
number seventeen. We sample it, we write it down and
we move on. We don't we generally speaking at events
(25:40):
like this, don't know who the winner is until the
crowd does, because we just know, okay, number seventeen got
the most ft. Well, we don't know who number seventeen
was until the crowd, but it is. It is a great,
great thing. And I think you're to be committed, you know,
for doing this. Because chili competitions are great. I've got
another one I'm going to be judging here in a
couple of weeks, and they're fantastic. But to doing something
a little bit different, but more importantly doing something great
(26:03):
for the community because time of you guys are doing
a lot of great things in the community out there.
Thank you, thank you, and and we want to continue
this all right, So where can people get more information?
Give us your Facebook or website whatever you got.
Speaker 12 (26:14):
Join yes, so our church. You can go to www
dot src, dot life and sign up. That way you
can buy tickets or registered to be I want to
be or a professional.
Speaker 5 (26:23):
Still to come up with a better name than want
to be? How about how about amateur?
Speaker 10 (26:27):
I thought about that, but want to be made me laugh.
Speaker 5 (26:29):
Okay, well that's all. Maybe you should sell t shirts
we are No, I mean I want to be t shirts,
want to be gravy king or something like that.
Speaker 1 (26:38):
Do that?
Speaker 3 (26:38):
All right?
Speaker 5 (26:38):
So for people that are coming out over to Capitol Market,
how does the ticketing work?
Speaker 12 (26:42):
So the pre sales you get them early it's fifteen adult,
five for children, and then day of it's twenty for adult,
ten for children.
Speaker 5 (26:49):
Okay, And so what does that get me? If I
buy a ticket at the gate? What does that get me?
Speaker 10 (26:53):
How it gets you the entrance in so you can
eat as much as you want as soon as you
come in.
Speaker 5 (26:56):
Okay, because I didn't know, because some of these they
have tickets and it gets you like five, you can
have as much biscuits and gravy as you want for
how much?
Speaker 12 (27:03):
Fifteen pre sale and twenty day of the event for
adults and then five for children pre sale and ten.
Speaker 5 (27:08):
It's going to be it's going to be a lot
of fun. And again it's happening Saturday, November eighth, over
Capital Market. What time does it start?
Speaker 10 (27:14):
Ten am?
Speaker 12 (27:15):
And it goes on till noon and then we'll announce
the winners at between twelve fifteen and twelve thirty.
Speaker 5 (27:19):
All right, and come hungry, right, exactly. Is there anything
else there for people that don't like biscuits and gravy.
Speaker 11 (27:26):
We have a couple that, just as last year, that
are making different things. We don't know absolutes yet. Okay, Okay,
there'll be a couple different Okay, all.
Speaker 5 (27:36):
Right, Well, we wish it the best of luck. It's
going to be a lot of fun. I know last
year we had a great time over there. And you know,
it's a rough life when you have to judge biscuits
and gravy. It's a rough life. Difficult's rough. Much pressure,
too much pressure, Joanna tome I appreciate you both being here. Thanks,
and we'll see over our November the eighth. Ok thanks

car there last night, and it's a really We talked

about a program similar to this on Metro News Midday
not long ago, and it was basically, and several auto
dealerships have done this as well. It's basically they gave
away a car to a veteran in need. And I
was talking to the owners of Generations Forward last night
and they said, hey, by the way, we're giving away
a CA. I was like, well, I can't be there
(32:02):
because I am on the air at Putnam Career Technical Center.
But we're going to have those folks on the air

Speaker 5 (32:57):

So we're doing shirts for them, which is kind of cool.
Speaker 5 (33:39):
And it's for initial what I told people about this event, Steve,
it's for a great cause and I know that, and
it's being sponsored by the folks at South Ridge Church.
But they do so much beyond the church, and I
mean as far as feeding people and things in the
community that for people that don't even go to their church.
That's the that's the thing that I like, doing good
for the neighborhood what they did, so yes, but I'm
(34:01):
going to be over there on that Saturday. Are going
to make an appearance over there on this.
Speaker 3 (34:03):
Ye, I am right.
Speaker 5 (34:05):
Well you feed me, Well, I'm a judge, I'm judging.
I'm one of the judge.
Speaker 3 (34:08):
Well that I'll just graze.
Speaker 5 (34:10):
Yeah, we can just have Well, you know how the
food judging goes. You take one bite and that's what
I did at the Chilian competition a couple of weeks ago.
I helped I wasn't a judge, but I helped diacilitate
the event in saying all that, and so all of
the judges, you know, take one byite and set it aside.
I'm thinking, well, as long as I get a clean spoon,
that's perfectly good chilli.
Speaker 2 (34:27):
What was funny when you guys were done judging, like
there was still half a jar of chili in this one.
Speaker 3 (34:33):
I was saying, Eh, I grab a spoon.
Speaker 5 (34:35):
I now have a ball. Take the boy out of radio.
But you can't take the radio out of the boy.
Speaker 3 (34:40):
Dude.
Speaker 2 (34:40):
You know, when you move somewhere for fourteen thousand dollars
a year, you take all the free meals.
Speaker 5 (34:46):
Was that what you you were making when you moved
here to not at this covey but less money? Yes,
fourteen thousand dollars a year. Yes, and you came from
where Boston? You moved from Boston to saying as to
make fourteen thousand dollars?
Speaker 3 (34:57):
Like, where am I going?
Speaker 2 (34:58):
I looked, I remember pulling up the at let's go on, Well,
it's close to Detroit where mom is.
Speaker 5 (35:03):
Yes, because because Charleston is very close to Detroit.
Speaker 3 (35:08):
Well it's closer than Boston.
Speaker 5 (35:09):
So all right, all r why are you here?
Speaker 2 (35:12):
We have the Crawloween pub Crawl coming up Saturday night
tomorrow over on Old Main Street and Saint Albans. It's
the fundraiser for the Alban Restoration project and we're going
to be presenting them with a big, big check. The
facade needs to be replaced. It's decrepit, it's fallen down,
it's rusted, had some vandalism to the neon a couple
(35:37):
of years ago, and we want to get it fixed.
So it's a seventy thousand dollars plus plus project. We've
got the grant money set up. They just have to
have match funds and we're able or not matching. And
this is for the Alban Theater. And give us a
little background on the Album Theater. The Album Theater is awesome.
It's been there since sixteen twenty when Columbus.
Speaker 5 (36:00):
Which is oddly enough when you came from from down
from Boston.
Speaker 2 (36:04):
Yeah, but it's a neat theater. They do a lot
with the Alburn Academy. Kids, can you know go there.
It's after school, it's learning, it's acting, it's a social
thing and they help out a lot of kids in
the area.
Speaker 5 (36:17):
So now well and plus it's a great place for
plays other productions and I will say this. Uh, but
during COVID land Eal Eugene Murphy Junr very good friend
of mine, logan guy, Yeah, you do you do all
Landel's merch when concerts were basically shut down and you
couldn't perform anywhere. Land Al and big brother Burke got
(36:41):
this idea, well, we'll kind of do, for lack of
a better term, a pay per view type concert, and
of all places to do it, he did it at
the Albun Theater in St. Albans.
Speaker 3 (36:49):
I remember it was awesome.
Speaker 5 (36:51):
I mean, and it was at that time I think
when people needed that, and the Album Theater stepped up
and said, hey, we'll host him. You can come here
and do it and put a big spotlight on the
Album Theater because we're watching literally all over the country
going what is this little theater, you know, because it's
not it's not.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
Big now it's not.
Speaker 2 (37:06):
And a lot of Marley and Adam Bryant, they do
a lot of work there in the community and they've
embraced it and they.
Speaker 3 (37:14):
Just they rock the place. So they do a lot
of good for the pub crawl.
Speaker 2 (37:19):
We have tickets available if you go to Saint Albans
Pub Crawls Facebook page. You can get tickets there. T
Shirt Cup Beverages JC doing some live DJing on the street,
a ton of food trucks. All the restaurants are participating
with drink specials, the Cafe drummis Chuckers, the Tap, Cole
River Coffee, Nano Brewery will be on the street Cosamel.
Speaker 5 (37:41):
So what times, everything starting against seven o'clock, seven o'clock.
Speaker 2 (37:44):
And I'll also have Intoxic Taxi link standing by just
in case somebody.
Speaker 5 (37:48):
Needs best best name ever. Yes in toxic cast, in
Toxic Cast because we want people to be saved.
Speaker 2 (37:54):
Jeb Cory, thank you for sending your crew out making
sure people have a safe and fun time.
Speaker 3 (37:59):
So it's going to be a good one.
Speaker 5 (38:00):
And I love the fact that you know so so
many times with small businesses, you know, restaurants or that
there's competition, and that's that's not necessarily a bad thing,
but sometimes it gets out of control. And I love
that the folks in Saint Albans they do it very
well here in Charleston too, that they all work together.
Speaker 3 (38:18):
Yeah, they do.
Speaker 2 (38:19):
And because it's about bringing people together, and that's really
the main thing for a good cause.
Speaker 3 (38:24):
Collectively in groups we can do a lot of good.
Speaker 5 (38:27):
Yeah, and uh, I'm sure somebody will have the WVU
game out there somewhere tomorrow night, because they play at
six o'clock tomorrow night. Somebody will have it, you know,
uh on their on their phone or their video or
something out there going up against TC who it's the
Uh yeah, it's homecoming for the Mountaineers, the like double
touchdown underdogs.
Speaker 2 (38:44):
Yeah, well we'll see, we'll see what that's. That's why
they play a given Saturday.
Speaker 3 (38:47):
Man. Yeah, all right, happened.
Speaker 5 (38:50):
Uh So tomorrow night again seven o'clock and the weather
is going to be fantastics, gonna be cold, but it's
it's autumn. It's supposed to be cold, gonna be cloudy,
but uh yeah, it's great food.
Speaker 2 (39:01):
Yeah, come in costume too, excuse me, best costume, best couple,
best group. There'll be cash prizes for that, and some
other prizes too to be one. So uh right there
on Old Main in Saint Albans. Yeah, and and look
if you are and I'm a foodie, I know you're
a foodie as well. Don't sleep on the food that
(39:22):
food options in Saint Albans, because there's some great places
to eat and what with what you're talking about here?
They're all within walking distance of each other, all of them.
I mean, really you can go stumbled in between all
of them and you I'm sure you.
Speaker 5 (39:32):
Will tomorrow night as well. What's going on on the
mountain and our sister station that I'm.
Speaker 2 (39:37):
A part of some rock and roll we've got scare View.
Actually that's uh going down tonight and tomorrow movenight, and
then next Friday, Halloween night.
Speaker 3 (39:45):
We wrap it up with a live broadcast.
Speaker 5 (39:47):
So, uh, scare of you Graves School, if you gotta
you know, you set the bar pretty high every year
with your costume on that final night of broadcast, and
you're actually there on Halloween next week, so you better
step up to the plate, you man.
Speaker 3 (40:00):
That's what I've been told. And I really don't have
anything planned yet.
Speaker 5 (40:03):
So sometimes it's the best costumes when you don't really plan.
I've got nothing, you know. Here's what we should do.
You should pick somebody in the building and you should
go with them.
Speaker 3 (40:12):
You should go as me I could.
Speaker 5 (40:14):
Yeah, if you were going to dress his day down,
what would you do?
Speaker 3 (40:17):
I'll call your wife, she'll dress me.
Speaker 5 (40:21):
I'm not sure I know what that means. But okay,
So crawlween tomorrow night, starting at seven o'clock. Yes, all right,
on the streets of Saint Albans, come on out, rock
Rock with the Mountain tomorrow night. We'll be all over
this thing and looking forward to it.
Speaker 2 (40:38):
And like I said, next Friday, scare of your Grave
School on High Street at twelve bucks gets you in
ten dollars, gets you in with a non perishable food item.
Speaker 5 (40:46):
All right, thanks, I'll be Tuesday night with the five
thousand kids over Trick or Beat. So and a quicker
quick reminder about that is it's a free event for
Trick or Beat, but you do need to have tickets
to get in. And that's just for the headcount because
last year it quote unquote sold out and you think, well,
how if it's a free event, can it sell out?
You can only put so many people in there, you know.
(41:08):
And so last year we did over thirty five hundred
kids and the two different sessions at Trick or Beat
over at Gomart Ballpark and to get sponsored by another
one of our sister stations, one of seven three to Beat.
So I'll be over there on Tuesday night looking looking at.
Speaker 1 (41:23):
Well.
Speaker 5 (41:23):
Okay, thanks for telling me that we only have tickets
available for the second session, and first session is sold outs.
So you were going to go to that early session,
you're out of luck that the early session is at
six the second session secary, So the first session is
sold out. I would I'm gonna go ahead and guess
that by the end of the day the second sessions
will be gone too. So if you're within the sound
of my voice right now and you want to bring
(41:46):
your kids after tricker beat, there's no charge to get in,
but you do have to have a ticket, and we
have them here daily during the Only kids need tickets. Staffan,
I'm aware she's so high for sometimes, so I need
a ticket. Yeah, so you did a ticket, yes, yes, yes, yes,
So the second session is all that is available at
(42:09):
this point, but they must have tickets. And again, very
good point by Stephanie. You don't have to have a
ticket if you're an adult, but the kids have to
have tickets. And but you need to get those tickets
today because I'm gonna say by five o'clock this afternoon,
they're gonna be gone gone. Don't poof boom. I'm gonna
work on your southern West Virginia accent. Alright, work with
me here gone.
Speaker 3 (42:29):
As our good friend jay Non Noneley would have said.
Speaker 5 (42:32):
Y'all be careful in them dogs.
Speaker 3 (42:34):
Those tickets are gonna be gone.
Speaker 5 (42:36):
Be careful of them dogs, all right, Seve animal, I'll
see you tomorrow night in Saint Albans. My friend, it
is you as well. Get out of my studio. It's
ten minutes in front of tam of Day Island Show
on five eighty lives. Brought to you in part by

Trump is going to end social Security. Wonder how those
old West Virginians will do without a few extra thousand
dollars a month. Oh well, you get what you vote for,
says a Tanks. You know the thing about social Security,
and people have heard me say this before. Social Security
was never designed to live on and it's supplemental, you know.
(46:05):
And when I started seeing the writing on the wall
years ago that social I have, Like I'm fifty five
years old. Number one, I never planned on retiring. Sorry, sorry, listeners,
I'm not going to retire. I'm gonna do this as
long as I can, all right. I have no no
thought that social Security is going to be there. None.
I mean, I don't know when I Maybe I go

into it. I started in the nineteen in the nineteen twenties,
I started in my twenties saying Social Security is not
going to be there, and it may or may not.
I ain't counting on it. It was never designed to
live on but that But had that having been said,
I'm not trying to be totally cold and unfeeling here
because people like myself, who's been a full time, working
(46:46):
full time since I was seventeen years old, we paid
into it, but I don't anticipate it being there, Dex

How does MAGA feel in West Virginia. I don't think
they care. I'll be honest, I don't don't. I don't

of Governor Morrissey sending the National Guard to d C's
being litigated. Brad Michaelhaney monitoring that Metro News Midday and

Midday powered by Selango Law with thirteen News in to
Night Live anchor Mande Baron and me coming up at
noon today. Now on that court case that's going on
right now. It was scheduled to begin at nine to
thirty this morning. A lot of attention is on Judge
Richard Lindsay's courtroom. This case is challenging the governor's deployment
of the Guard to the DC, and again Brad writes
(49:17):
about it this morning wv Metronews dot com you'll call.
In August, the President declared a quote unquote crime emergency
in DC and Governor Morrissey sent three to four hundred
members of the Guard to the nation's capital. A lawsuit
was filed by the ACLU of West Virginia about it,
and you can read the exact text of a lawsuit
this morning. It's part of Brad's story. Lawsuit was actually
(49:39):
filed on behalf of the West Virginia Citizens Action Group,
which says the deployment was quote unprecedented in a political
act and not response to a genuine emergency, and that
violates West Virginia law. That hearing was set to begin
at nine thirty this morning. We will keep you posted
on that shooting last night at the Little Caesars over
(50:00):
on the West side of Charleston. Happened just after eight
o'clock lab more on that as more details become available,
and some sort of an incident happened yesterday involving ice
at the TJ max store and Sow Charleston. A woman
was shopping there and said she was being followed by
two men. Police and ICE agents were called in. Now
one man was arrested but the other was released. I
(50:21):
understand a lot of details have got to come out
about that as well. TJ. Meadows is stopping by, Hey
doing man.
Speaker 16 (50:27):
I'm having a little tough tom breathing today. My airway
is a little obstructed.
Speaker 5 (50:31):
All that national death that we have Americas is as well.
I knew there was a punchline. So this was supposed
to start in Lindsay's courtroom. Judge Lindsay, I'm sorry, yeah
at nine point thirty this morning.
Speaker 16 (50:41):
Do we did it get underway? Do we know yet
or I don't know yet. I haven't heard anything from Brad.
I would say, you know, just typical delay or whatnot.
But it's God, Look, it's going to be interesting. I
think there's a dichotomy here. If the guard we're in Chicago,
I think it's a slam dunk. You don't do it
with DC being a Federal City. I think that muddies
(51:03):
the water a little bit or makes it more palatable
now whether or not it was just a political act,
why West Virginia's guard could the governor have said?
Speaker 12 (51:11):
No?
Speaker 16 (51:12):
Those are all distinct and separate issues. So I'm gonna
be interested to see exactly what arguments come out, how
this is framed beyond just the briefs, and we'll see
what happens and go from there.
Speaker 5 (51:25):
But and I will say that if if Brad does
have something to report, I'm sure he'll come on with
you guys today. We'll have him on Middays. Well, if
there's something.
Speaker 16 (51:31):
To report, Yeah, there's breaking news, I'm sure we'll go
right to mister Manilhaney.
Speaker 5 (51:34):
Let me read a text for you. Go for it,
but this is actually for me. Dude, Do you have
a source for your claim that social security wasn't meant
to live on? Or is this just your vibes and
right wing brain rot? Okay, number one, I'm not right wing.
That's number one. It's in the title supplemental social supplemental
social Security. It's in the NAMN title. It's it's it
does it was never meant to live on?
Speaker 16 (51:55):
Well, the retirement age has never been adjusted for the
growth in life expectancy either. When FDR put this together,
you know, we expected people to live much past what
late mid late sixties, and now they're living into their
eighties and nineties.
Speaker 5 (52:07):
But it's in the title supplemental. I get you. I'm
just trying to help your argument out a little bit.
It's in the title. It's in the title supplemental. It
was never ever designed to live one. You know, that
personal responsibility thing.
Speaker 3 (52:18):
It's overrated. Yeah, I agree, all.
Speaker 5 (52:20):
Right, gotta go see you later day. I metroduce midday
till then have fun to love somebody
