about traffic because there's been several accidents reported on I
sixty four. One of those was around the Oakwood Interchange eastbound,
and we I mean, it's it's been slow going out
there this morning. Anytime we get rain, you know what happens.

(01:50):
And I was driving in this morning about seven o'clock
from Day's Valley to Charleston, and I thought it was raining,
it was dark, and I thought to myself self, this
is going to be a problem coming up here really soon.
And that the accidents happen after that. So just planning
on some delays if you're going to be traveling anywhere,
and it's going to be that way pretty much through
tonight and to tomorrow to at least tomorrow evening. So

(02:14):
that's enough on the weather. Now, here's Brian with sports now.

McDonald House. Good morning to welcome to the show.

Speaker 5 (02:57):
Good morning, thanks for having me.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
That's the first time you've been on the show to pass, No,
I have not. This is the first time, all right,
all right, well, it's great to have you here and
tell us about what you got going on, when and where,
and we'll break it down specifically from there.

Speaker 6 (03:11):
So we have our Red Shoe Gala celebrating our fortieth
anniversary of Ron McDonald's Charities of Southern West Virginia, and
we are going back to the eighties for our Red
Shoe Gala theme. So it's next Friday, November seventh, at
the Convention Center from six to eleven, and we're going
to have dancing. DJ ej is going to be there.

(03:31):
We have dinner, we have arcade games, we have a
special appearance by Grimace.

Speaker 5 (03:36):
He will be there.

Speaker 6 (03:37):
So we're celebrating forty years of raw McDonald's charities and
we're just raising funds to help our families stay close
to the medical care their children need.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
Now, I love the eighties thing. By the way, and
Solang goes in here. You can jump in anytime if
you want to. Ben, It's say it's the eighties, you know,
are you more nineties though, aren't you.

Speaker 4 (03:54):
Oh my gosh, I think we're the same age.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Now we're nine. I'm older than you. We've had this
discussion before.

Speaker 4 (03:58):
I'm an eighties guy. Okay, yeah, I've already got my
outfit picked out.

Speaker 5 (04:02):
Awesome.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
Yeah he's wearing it now. Actually I'm kidding. I'm kidding.
Uh so eighties and see uh member's only jacket. That's
that's something you gotta have from the eighties. You gotta
have the the black. My look in high school was
the black rebox that were kind of velcrow but there
were high tops. You remember those men?

Speaker 4 (04:23):
I do, I do. I'm thinking vans. Vans are always
vans black and white checker vans, all right, are they?

Speaker 2 (04:31):
I know it's an eighties theme, but I mean people
don't have eighty stuff. You're not gonna turn anybody way, right, Yeah.

Speaker 6 (04:36):
So you can wear cocktail attire, so we can. You
can dress up as much as you want, or you
can dress just cocktail attire. It does not matter. We're
just doing the eighties theme to celebrate opening in nineteen
eighty five with There's just a great way.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
To go back, going back to the future exactly, which
was what was from nineteen eighty five.

Speaker 4 (04:54):
But if we're doing cocktail attire, then I'm going Miami Vice.

Speaker 5 (04:57):
You can't die at now you can go casual too.

Speaker 6 (05:02):
A lot of people wearing jeans or like leggings, like
worked out again.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
But again, I want to talk about the work of
the Ronald McDonald House because people hear that and it's
a wonderful, wonderful organization does so many great things here
in West Virginia, throughout the country talk about their work
at the Ronald McDonald House.

Speaker 6 (05:23):
Yeah, so the ron McDonald House, we provide a place
for families to stay who don't live close to the hospital.
So our families have to live at least twenty five
miles from Charleston and have a patient that's twenty one
in younger. So we only serve pediatric patients. We provide
them a place to today. It's kind of like a hotel.
They get their own private room. We have laundry facilities,
We have home cooked meals provided by volunteers that come

(05:46):
and cook for us. We provide laundry, detergent and dryer sheets,
toilet trees, pretty much anything that they would need so
they don't have to travel back and forth home and
they can be close to their child and just care
for their child and not have to worry about expense
or time traveling back and forth.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
And I think sometimes, Michadla, what people forget about this
is when you have a child that has one of
these illnesses, really the entire family is part of that
as well.

Speaker 6 (06:13):
Talk about rreact, So it's not just the child that
is suffering, it's also the family. And we understand that
being together helps the child heal quicker and better. So
we want the families be as much involved with the
care as possible, so provide them a place to stay.
We also have a playroom for all siblings so they
can visit the children too that are in the hospital

(06:36):
and they can just be together as a family. So
it's one list thing that you have to worry about
while their child is in the hospital.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
All right, now, where can people get tickets? What's the
best way to do it?

Speaker 6 (06:43):
You can go to our website CHARLESTONARMHC dot org. You
can go to our events to have and purchase tickets there.
We are almost sold out, so I would act quick.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
Yeah, I mean, and the event is next Friday, yes, correct,
next for US week from Friday, so I probably would
not wait until then to get to tell you. Try
to get him over the next couple of days. It
sounds like it's going to be a great time. And
I know your DJ very well. He's been on the
show as a matter of fact, and he does most
of the premiere events around Charleston round canallvaly.

Speaker 4 (07:10):
He does a fantastic job.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
I know he'll be cranking out that eighties eighties music.
I can help him with his playlist because they call
me Captain Eighties because I'm every because I never got
out of the nineteen eighties. He's going to have to
have a little Rick James super freak. I'm telling dj
AJ how to do his job, which I don't need
to do. You know, that's kind of a gap band.
You dropped the bomb on me, a little cool and
gang celebration. You got to have prints, you got to

(07:33):
have Michael Jackson. You want to add anything in here?

Speaker 4 (07:35):
Ben, I think that covers it. I would go min
at work. It's a dance, Ben, men of word down under?
He kidding me?

Speaker 2 (07:43):
Attorneys Attorneys, What are you going to do?

Speaker 7 (07:47):
Okay, there you go.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
Now you've redeemed your something you shook me on that
long from nineteen eighty the Back in Black album. So
I have this rare event. If you ever want to
hire me for entertainment. I can name any song from
the eighties and three seconds for.

Speaker 5 (08:00):
Oh, we should have done a trivia part of.

Speaker 4 (08:02):
Three seconds or less. That's that.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
It's my party gig. I can do that three seconds
or left. I can name any song from the eighties.
So there you go. All right. So again, it's next
Friday night, and hats off to you folks for doing great,
great work with Ronald McDonald house. We urge everybody to
come out. You can be there.

Speaker 4 (08:20):
Oh, yes, or there. I've got a table looking forward
to it.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
Okay, all right, it's gonna be a great, great night. Makayl.
I appreciate you being here. Thanks a lot.

Speaker 5 (08:27):
Yeah, thanks for having me, all right.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
And we'll go ahead and let you get out of
here because me and mister Slango have got to get
into some stuff here. So thank you for coming in. Mikayla.

Speaker 4 (08:35):
I do appreciate it. Thank you all right, see you
next week.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
The Dave Island Showing five eighty Live is brought to
you part by Husband's Pizza. This month, get a large
et Nich Pepperoni pizza and order of fifty centim in
bytes twenty ninety nine. Find your closest Hudson's Pizza for delivery,
pick up your dynad at Hussin's Pizza dot com. And
again we've been telling you about all of these accidents.
I sixty four east mile marker left center lane's closed
vehicle crash on I seventy seventh South at my one sixteen.

(09:01):
So a lot of accidents out there this morning because
of the wet roads. Please please just use caution if
you are going to be driving out there this morning.
County Commissioned President of Bnsulango is here. Good afternoon, good morning.

Speaker 4 (09:13):
Whatever it is, I lost track.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
I want to give you credit. This is outside County
commission though, this is for the law firm, and we
try to separate the two. But I do want to
say thank you for sponsoring last night. You were the
main sponsor over it to trick or Beat last night.
We had a well over one thousand kids that came
through there last night over Gomart Ballpark. So hats off to.

Speaker 4 (09:34):
You and your law I appreciate that, thank you, and
I have to say that the entire night. So I
was there from about five point thirty to almost nine.
I only ate one Twix. Now, there were thousands and
thousands of pieces of chocolate there. I had one Twix.
That was it.

Speaker 8 (09:51):
Now.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
You did tell me though, when I first walked through
the gate, You're one of the first people I saw.
You said that you were downed a couple of those
sour nerds or something like that.

Speaker 4 (09:58):
Okay, but that was before the events, and that wasn't
and that wasn't chocolate. It wasn't chocolate. It wasn't chocolate.
But those are good a long time. But eighties.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
Yeah, but what a great event though, It really was.

Speaker 4 (10:08):
I mean all the so many kids showed up. I
mean the line for both sessions it was around the ballpark.

Speaker 2 (10:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (10:14):
Uh. And then they get to come in, they get,
you know, to bring there. We had bags for them.
They come in, they get to fill up the bags,
and then they had free pizza and water, you know,
bottles of water.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
It was, it was.

Speaker 4 (10:24):
It's a great event. And I understand next year is
the twentieth year. We got to do something big then.
Well that's what I told Woody last night. So we've
got to we got to do something like we've got
to blow it out next year.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
And you know, one of the great things, you know,
it's a it's a ticketed event, but it's free. The
reason we have to do the tickets is because we
can get ahead count because the folks at Pizza Hut
donate the pizzas and they're awesome about that, and so
so many different sponsors come and donate this and that
and candies and so on and so forth. But we
just have to have an idea of how many people.
And and we had people coming in, you know, to

(10:56):
the radio station. For like the past three four weeks
or so, we've had had people two sessions of six
at a seven thirty. We only asked that you come
in during business hours to pick up the tickets, and
we limited them to six, you know, per person.

Speaker 7 (11:08):
I saw.

Speaker 2 (11:09):
I was working the front gate. I was handing out
that Selango law swag there along with Missy from the
Metro News sales team. One of the great things that
I saw that really impressed me is people that came
through got our tickets from Tracy out front, and then
when they came through, for one reason or another, I
had a sick kid or they didn't get have as many,

(11:30):
they would give them back and they would say, okay,
well I got six, but I really don't need six
because so and so didn't make it. So here's two
back in case somebody didn't get tickets. And I thought
that was it's just something about our community right there.

Speaker 4 (11:45):
Yeah, and I had I had some leftover and people
were messaging me, so I was able to give out
all of my tickets. Even as late as like yesterday
at five pm, people were still messaging yeah for tickets.
But yeah, you've got to have a head count. The
first year I did it, we ran out of candy
and I was eight and you don't want that, no,
but I was hitting up. It was an eight is
the outlet. They're there, and they brought me like this

(12:07):
monster box of candy to kind of finish us off.
But we we have a good time. I had probably
I don't know six or seven folks there with me
at the table and a couple of kids at the table,
you know, handing out the candy. But it was it
was really really fun.

Speaker 2 (12:21):
And I mean so many people from the community. Simony
of the people that you know run ads with us.
You hear on the our radio stations were there, and
the Charleston Police Department was there, and yeah, they had
a nice Commissioner Tenant was there last night. There were
so many people that were there, you know last night.
They just came out to help that maybe didn't even
have kids or whatever, they just wanted to help.

Speaker 4 (12:40):
Yeah. No, it's it's a big that's a big event.
I mean, so many people will show up and if
they're not bringing their kids, and they will help hand
out candy or help you know, get the kids in
the right direction. And but it's a lot of fun
for them because there are vendors all the way around
the ballpark, so they get a walk kind of the
perimeter of the field.

Speaker 2 (12:59):
And they got a little preview of the light the
night too, because a Jay and the folks over there
had the lights on last night at the ballpark and
so they got a little little preview last night.

Speaker 4 (13:10):
That just goes to show you what kind of a
big of how long it takes to set those lights up.
I mean, here it is, you know, yesterday was what
October twenty eighth, and they're about halfway finished with the lights.
And the lights it's going to take another almost a
month for them to finish.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
I got there about five or ten after five yesterday evening,
and they were out there on the field setting up
lights last night when I got there, and they did
it as long. I mean they were working during trick
or Beat because they were down on the field working
putting up lights while Tricker Beat was going on last.

Speaker 4 (13:42):
It's no joke. Two and a half million lights. It
takes a long time to put those up. So, you know,
one of the things that I talked to Andy say
about is potentially doing like some type of haunted mayze
or something on the field for Halloween, you know, bringing
people in, letting the kids go through because they've got them.
You know, there are several in other parts of the county,

(14:02):
but doing one there at the ballpark, I'm not sure
they can do it because it takes so long to
set up light to night. Yeah, so they would have
to they wouldn't be able to start light to Night
until after Halloween, which would be a very limited schedule.
They'd only have like three weeks to write up to
and a half million lights and an ice drink and
you know all the other great things. So I don't
think they'd have enough time, but certainly you know that

(14:23):
would be something I would be interested in helping out
with if they did a haunted maze.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
And I will remind you that the Selango l All
Light the Night is returning to the ballpark November twenty
first through January for the first but we urge people
get your tickets in advance by visiting Dblightthnight dot com.
County Commissioned President Ben Slang goes here, we're going to
take a break. When we come back, we're gonna we're
gonna break down this trick or treat thing because it
was announced yesterday about twenty four hours ago, that trigger treating,

(14:48):
which was originally scheduled for Thursday night in Knaw County,
has been moved to Friday night. And I've told the
story was about the seventh or eight time I've told
this story, and Mayor Goodwin told me one time the
two things to get people most upset or when you
mess with Christmas parades, when you mess with trick or treating.
But you guys and the County Commission made that decision yesterday,
and we're gonna explain why and get into some other

(15:09):
things going on. More more pressing things in the county.
When we come back, Knaw County Commission President Bensilango's here.
We'll take a break and be back after this on
the Voice of Charleston WCCHS.

was made. The trick or treating, which was originally scheduled
for Thursday night in Knaw County, moved to act the

(17:57):
actual Halloween night on Friday because of the weather. What
went into the decision safety? You know, when we determine
which night to do trick or treat, and there's a
you know, every one person has five opinions on this,
but or more or more, we try to look at
what's the safest thing. I mean, we've had as you've said,

(18:19):
you know, you've been talking since the top of the
show about all the accidents. Well, the reason there were
a bunch of accents today is because of the weather.
You know, it's rainy, it was dark this morning, it's slippery.

Speaker 4 (18:30):
You know that. I was driving to work this morning
about six thirty and it was pitch dark, pouring the rain,
and you just can't see that well. So it's a
visibility issue and we don't want that on trig or
treat night. You know, at seven thirty or something, you've
got kids walking around in costumes. They can't see that well.
They're wearing masks that are fogged up or rained over.

(18:52):
So it really comes down to safety. And we initially
decided to do Thursday because of Friday night football, and
I thought, you know, you got kids out on the
road going to the football games. You don't want little
ones darting out into traffic trying to get candy. So
we made the decision to a Thursday. Then we started
watching the forecast and tomorrow Thursday it's going to be

(19:15):
you know, pouring the rain is like a ninety percent
chance of rain, it's high winds, it's just not the
ideal weather for trick or treat. You know, somebody could
get hurt or killed. So we decided to move it
to Friday. Now, the funny thing about it is, when
we announced it was Thursday, so many people were upset
we weren't doing a Friday, and then we moved it
to Friday, and so many people are upset We're not

(19:35):
doing it Thursday. So you're not going to make everybody
ahead of those things. I mean, you know, we try
to do what's safe, not necessarily what's popular for everybody.

Speaker 2 (19:44):
And you got to understand too, Kanaw County is a
large county, it is, and this decision was made for
you know, for the entire county. It's not just the
city of Charleston and South Hills and whatever. You've got
Campbell's Creek and Tornado and all these other communities within
the county. And you know, you get into some of
these more rural areas, it's a much bigger problem than
what it is you know, downtown somewhere.

Speaker 4 (20:05):
Yeah, and even in even in the city, you know,
within the city of Charleston, it's an issue you've got
you know, tight streets, You've got kids on sidewalks, You've
got you know, people that aren't paying attention while they're driving,
and if it's rainy and dark and wet, the likelihood
of somebody getting hurt. I mean, I you know, we
get emails every morning. I get emails from Metro. Anytime

(20:28):
there's an incident in Kannaw County, I get an email
about it, whether it's a fender bender or fire or
you name it. My emails were just lit up this
morning with all the accidents, you know, all the people
that were you know, there's a bad one out on
the interstate right now.

Speaker 2 (20:42):
Yeah, just Stephanie just told me that our producer that
the backup on sixty four East Rex starts at Dunbar
right now.

Speaker 4 (20:49):
There's one out by Hickory Road that connects to Corridor G.
You know, if we've got so their accidents everywhere, the
last thing you want is to have little people out
on the street or out on the sidewalks when that's happening.
So we try to make the best decision we can,
the safest decision we can with the information we have
at the time. That does not mean on Thursday night.
It's not gonna be seventy degrees. He's like perfect, and

(21:12):
then I'm gonna look like an idiot. That's there is
a high potential for that, but I understand going in
that you can't win. The only way that you could
possibly win is to say, trick or Treat's going to
be on the thirty first. I don't care what day
it is, I don't care what the weather's like. It's
going to be on the thirty first. And then if
somebody gets hurt or killed, you got some explaining to do,

(21:34):
you know. So perhaps you just take the government out
of it and say it's the thirty first, that's Halloween.
That's when you're going to trigger treat. And if it's
a Sunday, it's a Sunday, it's a Wednesday night. It's
a Wednesday night.

Speaker 2 (21:44):
And you and I were talking about that off the air,
you know, and I'm from southern West Virginia, and you
didn't do anything on Wednesdays or Sundays. Wednesday night's church night, man,
and you didn't have trick or treating on Wednesday night
and also on Sunday, you know, for various reasons. And
so people don't want it on Friday because of high
school football. They don't want it on Saturday. We used
to hear excuses. People would say, well, we don't want

(22:04):
it because Saturday night, you know, that's when all the
drunks are out, when people are going to the bar. Well,
I mean, you can get hit by a impair driver
at eleven am on Tuesday morning. So and if you
go by that route, that means that you're going to
narrow it down to having trick or treating on Monday, Tuesday,
or Thursday.

Speaker 4 (22:22):
Well, you can't do that because that's a school night
and the kids get tired. Because I've heard that a
couple hundred times. You know, you can't do it on
a school day because it's you know, the kids will
get tired, the teachers are tired, they don't want to
be out all night they would be And then you
can't do it on Friday because of football. You can't
do it Thursday because it's middle school football. You can't
do it Saturday because that's when people are out drinking
and driving. And you can't do it Sunday because that's church.

Speaker 2 (22:45):
So what does that leave that pretty much does Christmas morning?
That's the only thing it leaves is Christmas morning.

Speaker 4 (22:51):
You can't do it Christmas orning because Halloween's a pagan holidays.

Speaker 2 (22:55):
Well, you know, go back in the history of Christmas too,
but that's another story. I mean, I got a couple
of text Herefore Texas trick or Treating got moved to
its proper day. Spirits brought the storm to force the
county commissioners to rectify their decision. Good on the county
commission for taking the hint from the spirits.

Speaker 4 (23:10):
Thank you spirits.

Speaker 2 (23:11):
All right, Can cities or neighborhoods as the texture hold
their own trick or treating days?

Speaker 4 (23:15):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (23:15):
Or if they go against the county, well, the thing's repercussions.

Speaker 4 (23:20):
I promise you there won't be any repercussions over trick
or treat. But listen, of it's funny looking at it.
I mean, it's not funny just because people get so
worked up. But most of the people that are getting
worked up, they're the ones that have their lights out
and don't even hand out candy anyway. Like it's you know,
it's the it's it's people who just want to be negative.

(23:42):
I get that that's your right be as negative as
you want it to be, if that makes you feel better.
The truth is, we've got to make the decision based
upon safety. We've got to make it based upon the
information we have at the time. Now, if the municipalities
and you know, it's not like every mayor in the
county agreed with this decision, I did get, you know,

(24:04):
an anger call from one. Uh. Municipalities can have it
whatever day they want. But historically, when the county sets
it and you miss, municipalities say okay, let's do it
that way. Because if you're if Dunbar is gonna have
it Thursday, and let's say it's nice and the weather's
perfect in Dunbar on Thursday, then everybody in Charleston and
South Charleston and Nitro and Saint Aubans is going to

(24:26):
be heading to Dunbar on Thursday. Yeah. Right, And then
if Nitro has it Friday, everybody's heading the Nitro. You
know they can game this system. Yeah, so you want
to have it, you want to have it on one night,
and particularly municipalities have agreed. It's kind of an unwrittenfore Ben.

Speaker 2 (24:43):
There is no tricker, there's no trick or treat police.
If you want a trigger treat in July, go ahead,
I mean.

Speaker 4 (24:49):
Nobody have it. I may sponsor it. I don't know.

Speaker 2 (24:53):
Halloween in July. All right, So I think we've spoken
enough about trigger treating, but have another couple things to
want to get to you before you go. One text
says they've asked Ben, why the uh the case ready
app hasn't worked for a year. It gives no notifications.

Speaker 4 (25:11):
I wasn't aware that the casey Ready app wasn't working. Okay,
well apparently all right, Yeah, got that taken.

Speaker 1 (25:18):
Care of.

Speaker 2 (25:20):
The setting. The trick or Treat night has done months
in advance, and people make plans. I understand the safety concerns,
but using that logic and with all of this morning directs,
one should postpone driving for the day. So it's a texture. Well,
I don't understand what they did there.

Speaker 4 (25:33):
I'm not sure that the there's a logical connection between
postponing driving and uh, delaying trick or Treat for a day.

Speaker 2 (25:40):
I mean a little star caps right, but but but
I will say this, I do I do feel badly
for the parents who requested Thursday off. Yeah, I get that,
and I feel terribly about that. Uh, but I promise
you this you you weren't gonna be out trick or
treating tomorrow anyway. You're gonna be sitting it home, right,
So if you requested, you can do that anyway, because

(26:02):
I don't send. Let's the forecast just completely changes. I
don't see any way people are going to be out
even if we said, oh, we're going to still do
it Thursday, that people would be out. First of all,
it's way too dangerous. But it's going to be pouring
the rain. Depending on which station you look at, it's
somewhere between an eighty five and ninety eight percent chance
of rain and not. I'm not tall about sprinkles, you know,

(26:23):
heavy rain, heavy rain. We're not expecting severe weather of
what I understand as far as thunder and lightning goes.
But we are expecting heavy downpours exactly. And that leads
to ponding on roads, especially when you get to some
of these rural areas, it becomes a bigger problem.

Speaker 4 (26:35):
It's a glare issue, you know.

Speaker 10 (26:37):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (26:38):
I have trouble driving at night when it's raining because
it's hard. It's I I'm old, you know, it's hard
to see. Uh, you got kids running in between cars.
They call it dart you know, dart outs, You've got
that issue. It's it's a significant issue. So I think
we made the right decision. But only time will tell you. Yeah,
we're either going to look really really smarter, really really see.

Speaker 2 (26:58):
I like your idea what you said of you just
have trick or treating on Halloween night.

Speaker 4 (27:01):
Period.

Speaker 2 (27:01):
That's the easy way out at easy Halloween night. And
if it's on a if it's on Church night, if
it's on a night when the Mountaineers are playing in
high school football or whatever, so be it. It's on Halloween.

Speaker 4 (27:10):
If we do that, we'll get hundreds and hundreds and
hundreds of messages and emails and comments about why don't
we do it the way we used to do it?
Because and this is somebody somebody took a screenshot of
this and sent it to me yesterday and they said
moving Trick or Treat to Friday was the worst decision
the Kanawha County Commission has ever made. And I'm thinking back,

(27:31):
you know, two hundred years of Kanawak County. I'm like, man,
we've made some really good decisions. Then if moving that's
twenty four hours was the worst decision, then I feel
pretty confident about how things are going.

Speaker 2 (27:42):
Back to the ballparking moment, says Dave. Why can't they
just put a quote unquote haunted trail around the ballpark
up there when the vendors and things are there. That way,
it wouldn't be in the way of light the night's setup.
I like it, like it too. But the only problem
I'm not opposed to the only problem is somebody who
worked trigger beat last night. The only problem I see
with that is is one of the issues you have

(28:02):
is the flow of the of the traffic with and
I mean that by you know, of the kids I'm
talking about and trying to get them all through there.
You know, that's one of the problems we have is
we have to tell them. I mean, the kids want
to you know, they want to check out the different candies.
I get that. But I was working the front the
front gate along with Missy as I said, from our
Metro News sales department, and so we had to say, okay,
we'll take the next five en now hold up because

(28:23):
we've got a bottleneck here. That's a good problem to have.
But that's the only problem.

Speaker 4 (28:27):
I can There were there were bottlenecks, but so if
they put a honted trail around the perimeter. First of all,
they do have lights on the perimeter. It's not just
on the field, it's all over the place, on the
sides of the buildings. Yeah, but I could see them
maybe unplugging those, you know, and just not having electricity
of those. That's something that Andy shelill have to decide,
and and if he makes that decision and he wants

(28:48):
help with it, I'm here for it.

Speaker 2 (28:49):
What Ben says describes as a texture of people going
city to city for trick or treating sounds like the
opportunity for capitalism for me one hundred percent. Then sell
that candy.

Speaker 4 (29:00):
That's right. In fact, if they do that, I may
I may go door to door, from city to city.

Speaker 2 (29:04):
Who knows he caw was fifty two years old, Dix says,
ever thought about volunteers acting a sort of crossing guards
in each neighborhood to guide traffic and keep kids safe.

Speaker 4 (29:14):
That's a good idea. Uh, it would take a lot.
I mean it would be a lot of cross you know.
I see the volunteers and at schools in the mornings
to do that all over the county and not just
in school zones, but it would take a lot of volunteers.

Speaker 2 (29:27):
Somebody said it would be if we if we had
trick or trading on Christmas, we could call it Chris Aween.

Speaker 4 (29:32):
How do you have aniot? People would like run me
out of there? Yes, I did that absolutely, I will
let me. Let me take care of this. And I
got a couple of other things to talk to you about.
A Dave Island show on five eighty line, brought to
you a part by the All New Generations Ford of
Hurricane your family and locally owned for dealership. Ask about
explanning discount pricing on the purchase of every new four.

Speaker 2 (29:50):
They're also offering one hundred and thirty percent of Kelly
Blue Book fair trade value for your vehicle visiting today
off the Hurricane accent or online at Generations for dot
com destination for every Generation Generations forward to see see
dealer for details. All right, let's talk about other things
with Canaan County, I mean judicial annexes, a capital sports complex.
We've we've trick or treated all we can trick or treat,

(30:12):
So let's talk about some more.

Speaker 4 (30:13):
Serious judicial NX is moving along. You know, we uh
traffic in that area is not ideal just because they
had to close down a lane on Virginia. Uh So
people that are crossing the street there, you've got to
be very, very careful if you're at the corner of
like Court and Virginia, and especially when it's raining like this,
you've got to be careful. So people that will park

(30:34):
and have to walk across, or they're crossing for lunch,
or they're doing whatever. Uh that's a that's a high
risk area. And you know, the engineers have studied it
and they've come up with what we believe to be
a safe plan. But it's concerning there, right, it's concerning.
But we're moving along. It's going to be a while,
you know. That's a that's a very long project. I

(30:55):
think we're going to be well into twenty twenty six
before it's completed. The fifth floor, the judicial annats is done.
It looks great. Our architects, the bill, the construction company
did a wonderful job. Uh So Judge Lindsay's in his
courtroom in the annex on the fifth floor. They did
a great job there. So now we're just working on
the first floor. Uh. Keep in mind, you know, by

(31:17):
doing it the way we did it, even though it
delayed a few months, probably six months. Uh we say
five and a half million dollars. So that was that
was a big decision. Talking about talking about worst decisions
coun knock out he's ever made. If we had gone,
you know, five six million dollars ever Bud did. I
suspect they wouldn't be worried about trick or treat. They'd
be worried about the money we wasted. But uh we

(31:38):
we took a calculated gamble and it paid off.

Speaker 2 (31:42):
What about the last time we had John here, we
talked about the expansion of the law enforcement training area
out there that that is coming along.

Speaker 4 (31:49):
We've got we we did our we put out bids
for architects and we've we had several people that bid
on and I believe ZMM had the uh we receive
the high score on the on the on the bids.
So it will, it will. They're starting to work on
it now. I think it's gonna take about four to

(32:10):
six months to design, which is perfect because that'll put
us into spring and we can start construction. I suspect
it'll take six months or so to construct Capital Sports Complex.
Fingers crossed, Buddy fingers crossed. You know, Where's when I
talk about this, I want to make sure people understand
I'm not criticizing anyone. That's not the purpose of it.

(32:33):
But we we have, uh we've looked at the financing.
We have put millions of dollars into it that's still
ready to go. We have the capacity to bond a
substantial portion of it. We do not have the capacity
to bond all of it. So there are two options.
We can either scale the project back, which is not ideal,

(32:56):
or we can uh see if we can get some
state or federal assistance. We've it in for a federal
ear mark and we're waiting to see if we get it.
But you know that's things are a little different right now.
That's not a criticism of anybody. Is is different, and
so we'll see if we get it. If we don't,
then we'll either ply again next year or we'll come

(33:17):
up with a different plan. My goal is to have
that done because I really think and people people are
seeing it. You know, the mall is slowly but surely,
it's just it's getting worse and worse.

Speaker 1 (33:30):
Now.

Speaker 2 (33:31):
They're announcement I made about a week or so ago
about another business closing there the cheesecake or the cheese
take place.

Speaker 4 (33:36):
I think I thought you must said cheesecake fast. I
will take a cheesecake factory. Don't get that start. Yeah,
So we're we're we're hoping that will happen. I think
people have seen, you know what sports tourism does. I
think most people get it now. It wasn't necessarily a
popular idea back in twenty seventeen when I propose the
Shawnee Sports Complex, But it's it works. It's brought in

(33:58):
over one hundred and fifty million dollars in economic impact.
I think that facility would bring in substantially more, just
because there are more sports that we'll be able to do.
It's some of the biggest travel sports in the nation.
You're talking about volleyball, basketball. It will work, you know,
it's just a big commitment. It's a lot of money.
It's a lot of money.

Speaker 2 (34:18):
Two more questions for you are a popular guy today?
What's the number to get Culvert's clean? Guthrie Road off
Route twenty one in the Charleston County Lands is so
bad that the roads becoming a series of potholes all over.

Speaker 4 (34:30):
The main Number three, five, seven, one zero zero. Give
that number four three or four three five seven one
zero zero. I hope I just gave you the county
commission number, not my judicial number. I don't know if
you gave it for Judge Selango. Just say hey, give
us message. Tell Ben h there was enough.

Speaker 2 (34:50):
How does the Knaw County Commission select outside legal council
to handle legal matters for the county? And is there
a record of the firms retained and paid for by
the county?

Speaker 4 (34:58):
There is? Yeah, you can get all that with a
four and we It depends on the situation. I mean,
we use different lawyers with different expertise depending on the
situation that we have. But it's typically a decision by
the county commissioners which firm to retain. It is. Uh,
you know, if we have an employment matter, then we

(35:18):
look at the respected employment lawyers. If we have when
we had to sue the trucking company over the Paint
Creek collapse, we looked at, you know, which law firm
do we think that would be best. Now, if it's
an insurance claim, then we don't necessarily get to picket.
For instance, if if somebody slips on the sidewalk or something,
we don't necessarily get a picket. We we have some

(35:40):
influence in that, but it's not it's simply the insurance
company that would hire. So it depends on what type
of case it is.

Speaker 11 (35:45):
UH.

Speaker 4 (35:46):
And then the insurance companies have what are called panel council,
and the panel council is put together by the carrier
and they will call us and say, hey, which firm
might you want to use from our panel council, and
then we can tell them and they don't have necessarily
go with us. But that's how we're all right.

Speaker 2 (36:00):
We gotta go. I've got more questions for you. Would
just have to have you back.

Speaker 4 (36:03):
All right, sounds good?

Speaker 2 (36:04):

Speaker 2 (40:02):
And we're still in a traffic mess here In The,
KANAL valley i mean Sixty four. EAST especially i want
to ask you about the governor's. Press, conference sure yesterday your,
thoughts governor and we carried it Live On. Metro news
midday comes out yesterday and says that he's Asking All
west virginians HAD the qr codes and everything to donate
because of the partial government shutdown and the LOSS of

(40:23):
snap Benefits, on saturday he's asking for the governor or
asking for the public to come up and help out
with the state's going to put in, so much and
then he's wanted the public to put in.

Speaker 14 (40:34):
So much, your thoughts, SURE well, i mean of course
it's better. THAN nothing, i MEAN the snap benefits pretty
much go on Pause beginning. November one there's gonna be
ANY other. Snap benefits so it puts states in the
position having to do Something in different states are doing.
Different things some have done states of emergency in order
to allow them to free up the money. They need

(40:55):
some are dumping whatever money they need. Into It west
virginia being a little more, cautious again. Thirteen million up to.
Thirteen million it's not even guaranteed that it's. Thirteen million
it has to be matched by private donors To Both
Mountaineer food Bank And Facing Hunger. Food bank they're going
to split their donations. In half but if whatever people

(41:18):
donate to those food banks during, this period if you
can get up to thirteen million in, the state will
donate up to. Thirteen million, in fact they're throwing two
point five million in as of today to get the whole.
Thing started but it's one of those things like it's,
better nothing but is it going to? Be enough it
depends on how quickly. People donate it depends obviously on the,

(41:40):
government SHUTDOWN because i think everyone sort of hopes this
one gets wrapped up next week after we see the
possible insurance premium hike numbers come Out on november FIRST.
FOR aca, I mean i think the pressure is mounting
to end this probably at, some point hopefully by the
beginning the. NEXT week i don't want. To PREDICT so

(42:02):
i do think that the governor is hoping that this
thing gets resolved so we don't have to put a
whole bunch of state money into these food banks because
we're not getting reimbursed from That.

Speaker 2 (42:12):
From defense So on monday's, LOCAL show i Had On Delegate,
kaylee young and she point, blank said calling out, the
Government the governor's got. The money if you need to
call the, legislature in call the legislature in let's fund.
This thing, then yesterday after the announcement, came Out Say
democratic Party Chairing Delegate, mike pushkin who just happened to
be like in, the area came in did a little

(42:32):
run in on the show yesterday to again kind of
dismiss what to, not dismissed that's not the, right word
but he criticized the governor's. Announcement yesterday AND then I
think i heard some audio this Morning From delegate YOUNG
on i guess TikTok or something that she put, out
saying just just put the. Money out what would you say?

Speaker 14 (42:50):
To that on, ONE hand i understand What the, governor's doing,
because sure we're talking about between forty five and fifty
million dollars for a month WORTH of, snap benefits and
we're talking about thirteen million up to. THIRTEEN million i
want to stress that because.

Speaker 2 (43:08):
Again they want.

Speaker 14 (43:08):
Private donors so assuming private donors pony up thirteen, million
dollars you're talking about twenty six. Million dollars but that
only gets you halfway through, One MONTH so i would
get you Halfway. Through NOVEMBER so i Understand the democratic
members Of the house specifically saying just just put all that.
Money in but at the, same Time the morrissey administration

(43:30):
is taking a more cautious approach and trying to fund
these food banks based on, you know as in. Needed
basis they don't want to throw in a whole bunch
of money because then you'll have to yank all that.
Money back that certainly hurts the food banks in the.
Long run and keep, in mind this is not like
we're not dumping this money into snap and people are

(43:51):
going to be able to use their cards. And whatnot
we're dumping this into. Food banks it's not even really
the same. YOU know I think I Heard bob aaron
say during our, Press, conference yes Say to governor that
for every one meal that you would do through the,
food banks that could do the same thing with. Nine
meals so it's not even really an. Even match, so
yeah there's no. Winners here this is, all bad.

Paper Ghosts: The Texas Teen Murders

Paper Ghosts: The Texas Teen Murders takes you back to 1983, when two teenagers were found murdered, execution-style, on a quiet Texas hill. What followed was decades of rumors, false leads, and a case that law enforcement could never seem to close. Now, veteran investigative journalist M. William Phelps reopens the file — uncovering new witnesses, hidden evidence, and a shocking web of deaths that may all be connected. Over nine gripping episodes, Paper Ghosts: The Texas Teen Murders unravels a story 42 years in the making… and asks the question: who’s really been hiding the truth?
